  • Blazers Burn Bulls in Energetic Outing

The Portland Trail Blazers entered their Sunday night contest versus the Chicago Bulls losers of five straight, looking like a team on the road to nowhere. The trip took a detour in this game. After a first quarter of all-too-familiar futility, Portland’s bench unit provided a spark in the second quarter that ignited into a full-on flame. When the smoke cleared, Portland ran away from Chicago with a 113-102 victory.

Zach LaVine led the Bulls with 27 points. Five Blazers scored 15 or more points led by Scoot Henderson with 25 and Shaedon Sharpe with 23.

    Lightning McQueen

As the star of the Pixar Cars franchise will tell you, there’s no substitute for speed. The Blazers remain committed to playing fast on offense tonight, as they have been over the last few weeks. Two hallmarks typify their approach. Their guards and wings are running down the floor, no walking and little jogging. They also shoot without hesitation. On most plays they work their way into screen action and some kind of penetration fairly quickly too. The energy is nice to see.

There’s a difference between energetic and efficient, though, at least in Portland’s case. Few of the shots are arguable. They just don’t fall enough. The Blazers commit too many turnovers going to the rim and miss too many shots when they get blunted and kick out. The cumulative effect is, “Nice…but too bad about the result,” That can describe a lot of their games lately too.

Not tonight, though. The Bulls don’t play defense much better than the Blazers do. Portland’s persistence led to 47.2% field goal shooting 14 offensive rebounds for 24 second-chance points, and a massive 62 points in the paint. The fierce, energetic work was more than enough to secure the victory. At the heart of it, they controlled the pace, moving fast while the Bulls bogged down. Add all those blue-collar stats up with a 17-6 transition advantage? Bingo. Win.

    First Quarter Defense

Portland’s attack might hurt opponents more if their defense weren’t so darn bad. In the first period Chicago obliterated the perimeter defenders for the Blazers. Zach LaVine started by hitting a three-pointer right in Deni Avdija’s face. That forced Portland to stay tight on him outside, which was like giving him an all-access subway pass into the lane whenever he wished. He took every defender the Blazers threw at him, blowing by them like they were turnstiles. We could criticize Deandre Ayton for not closing out harder at the rim for blocks and stops, but he barely had time. LaVine put on a clinic. His teammates took notice and started driving themselves. The result was a 34-point period that the Blazers had no hope of matching.

    Second Quarter Defense

Portland fielded a more switch-worthy lineup against Chicago’s second unit, including Avdija, Toumani Camara, Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, and Jabari Walker at various times. With little variation of height and speed, the Blazers were able to keep in front their Chicago counterparts, cutting off penetration without sacrificing their ability to close on three-point attempts. Portland’s mid-height players slowed the Bulls’ offense to a simmer early in the second.

As the quarter came to a close, the Blazers fielded a stellar defensive lineup featuring Avdija, Camara, Henderson, and Jerami Grant. That quartet was good, leaving so little space uncovered that Deandre Ayton’s height in the middle started to pay dividends, shutting off a phone-booth-sized area in the lane. Now Chicago was flustered, missing nearly everything, seeming unable to discern good shots from bad.

When the second period concluded Chicago had but 19 points and the Blazers had pulled even again on the scoreboard after getting blown out in the opening frame. The difference between the first two quarters was stark. There’s no doubt which should be the model for future endeavors.

    Scoot Shines Again

Scoot Henderson was one of the stars of Portland’s turn-around. His offense came alive with three-pointers and drives, but even more impressively, he was active and hostile on defense. When Scoot is locked in, playing the game instead of thinking it, he looks really good.

Another developing aspect of Henderson’s game: his ability to draw fouls on the drive. He absorbs contact like a cement mixer. Tonight he earned 8 free throws. His non-scoring stats weren’t bad either: 8 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, only 4 turnovers. Hey hey.

    Toumani Key

We talk about switching defense, focus, and activity, often highlighting players like Ayton and Henderson who don’t always defend well but seem to blossom with the right teammates. We should never forget that Toumani Camara is always the right teammate on defense. He is ridiculously sick, getting his hands in the dribble zone of point guards, standing in against the opposing center, and everything in between. Tonight Camara covered every opponent on the floor and found reasonable success against all but LaVine…himself a sick puppy on offense. Portland’s defense, such as it is, doesn’t exist without Camara.

Tonight Camara scored zero points on only three shot attempts and still helped turn this game. All hail our new defensive overlord.

    Deni Offense

Deni Avdija continues to look comfortable with the ball in his hands on offense. His third-quarter performance was impressive as he drove the break, hit threes, and passed to teammates inside and outside the lane. The beautiful thing about Deni is that he can do pretty much anything on a given possession: attack forward, pass sideways, shoot, even alley-oop. It may not be enough to strike fear in the hearts of opponents, but it’s enough to keep them guessing. Avdija finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

    Sharpe Off the Bench

Shaedon Sharpe went to the bench tonight, a publicly-admitted critique of his defense by Head Coach Chauncey Billips. Sharpe appeared to get low and stay active defensively when he was in. He’s not got the instincts of Avdija or the hard-nosed commitment of Camara. It’s understandable that, with Sharpe’s athleticism and length, the coach might want more. But Sharpe isn’t the worst defender on the roster. Hopefully effort will lead to a little more precision and get him back on track. At least it was good to see Sharpe playing hard and not hanging his head.

    Boxscore

The Blazers will go coast to coast now, facing the Miami Heat on Tuesday with a 4:30 PM, Pacific start.

The Portland Trail Blazers put on a fiery performance as they burned the Chicago Bulls in an energetic outing on the court. The Blazers came out strong and never let up, dominating the game from start to finish.

Led by their star players Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, the Blazers showed off their offensive prowess, hitting shots from all over the court and leaving the Bulls struggling to keep up. Lillard’s smooth ball-handling and deadly three-point shooting, combined with McCollum’s quick drives to the basket, kept the Bulls on their heels all game.

On the defensive end, the Blazers were just as impressive, forcing turnovers and contesting shots with tenacity. They held the Bulls to a low shooting percentage and limited their second-chance opportunities, ultimately sealing the victory with a comfortable lead.

The energy in the arena was palpable as the Blazers put on a show for their fans, showcasing their talent and determination to come out on top. The team’s chemistry and cohesion were evident as they worked together seamlessly to outplay the Bulls in every aspect of the game.

With this commanding win, the Blazers have proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in the league this season. Fans can only hope that this level of performance will continue as the team looks to make a deep playoff run. #Blazers #Bulls #NBA #Basketball #Sports #Victory

  • Shiba Inu Burn Rate Rises 21% With Market Rebound, But The Numbers Are Concerning

Shiba Inu, the second-largest meme coin, has seen its price edge upward, and its token burn mechanism has also relayed a similar trend. According to the Shiba Inu burn tracker Shibburn.com, the number of SHIB tokens burned has risen by about 21.76% in the past 24-hour timeframe. This increase in SHIB burns is looking positive for the meme coin’s price going forward, but the actual burn numbers reveal a persistent challenge in achieving significant progress.

Shiba Inu Burn Rate Rises 21%

Shiba Inu has witnessed a lackluster burn activity in the past two weeks, stemming from a similar lackluster price action, activity, and interest in the cryptocurrency. As such, daily SHIB burns have perambulated around 21 million SHIB tokens burned, which is far less than the typical daily burn activity required for bullish momentum.

According to Shibburn.com, the last 24 hours were highlighted by 26,221,803 $SHIB tokens collectively sent to the SHIB burn wallets, which represents a 21.76% increase from the 21 million SHIB tokens burned in the previous 24-hour timeframe.

Despite the 21.76% rise in burn activity, the total number of tokens burned remains underwhelming. This amount, though an improvement over previous days in the past few weeks, pales in comparison to the huge circulating supply of Shiba Inu, which currently sits at more than 589 trillion tokens. To put this into perspective, even at this improved burn rate, it would take decades to make a significant dent in the token’s supply.

    Source: Shibburn

SHIB burns are particularly one of the many methods that the Shiba Inu community has put in place in order to contribute to steady price growth. The more SHIB tokens are burned and taken out of circulation, the better it is for Shiba Inu’s price. Interestingly, Shiba Inu lead developer Shytoshi Kusama once noted that it would be possible to burn 99% of the SHIB supply.

The current pace highlights the need for a more consistent approach to token burns if the goal of reducing supply and driving long-term price appreciation is to be achieved. However, the recent 21.76% increase could be the first step of many burn increases to come.

Price Rebound Brings Relief For SHIB

The broader crypto market’s recovery has provided a temporary boost to Shiba Inu’s price. Shiba Inu has managed to capitalize on the 3.48% market-wide increase and is currently trading at $0.00002222, an increase of about 3% in the past 24 hours.

Technical analysis of Shiba Inu’s price action shows it is looking to break above the upper trendline of a falling wedge pattern. A confirmed breakout of the falling wedge alongside market-wide inflows would send the Shiba Inu price pumping in the next few weeks.

The Shiba Inu cryptocurrency has been making headlines lately, with its burn rate rising by 21% following a market rebound. While this may seem like good news on the surface, the numbers behind this increase are actually quite concerning.

The burn rate refers to the amount of Shiba Inu tokens that are being destroyed or removed from circulation. This is typically done to increase the scarcity of the currency and drive up its value. However, in the case of Shiba Inu, the burn rate has been steadily increasing, indicating that more and more tokens are being removed from circulation.

While this may initially seem like a positive development, the sheer magnitude of the burn rate increase is cause for concern. It suggests that a large number of tokens are being removed from circulation, which could potentially lead to a shortage of Shiba Inu tokens in the future.

Additionally, the rapid rise in the burn rate could also indicate that there are underlying issues with the Shiba Inu ecosystem that are driving this increase. This could include factors such as excessive token supply, lack of demand, or manipulation by large token holders.

Overall, while the market rebound may have initially seemed like a positive development for Shiba Inu, the concerning increase in the burn rate should not be overlooked. Investors should proceed with caution and closely monitor the situation to ensure that the cryptocurrency remains a viable investment option in the long run.

  • Hawaii burn victims hospitalized in Arizona continue fight for their lives

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Imagine attending a New Year’s Eve celebration in Hawaii and then waking up from a coma months later in Arizona.

Arizona Burn Center director Dr. Kevin Foster said that’s likely the jarring reality for six people he’s treating.

“Generally we keep people intubated, sedated, sleepy and forgetful until we get most of their burns covered and none of the patients are even close to that period yet,” said Dr. Foster.

A New Year’s fireworks explosion in Hawaii killed four people and badly hurt nearly two dozen more.

Hawaii’s burn center is at capacity, so six survivors were flown 3,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean to Phoenix on a military plane equipped to care for them in the air.

All six continue to fight for their lives more than two weeks after the disaster; intubated in a coma and are unaware of where they are and what they’ve been through.

“We’ve been operating on each one of them every two or three days since that time and we’ve gotten the burns off of all of them. We’ve started reconstruction and skin grafting efforts,” said Dr. Foster.

Dr. Foster says the severity of their injuries ranges from nearly 50% to 80% of their bodies burned.

He says these are wounds you’d see in a war zone, with debris from the blast leaving behind significant lacerations and infections in addition to the burns.

“These are potentially lethal, deadly injuries,” he said.

The six victims are in their 20s and 30s. According to their GoFundMe, two are dating each other, and two others have a 3-month-old baby together.

“It’s our goal to have everybody leave here and go back to Hawaii and live the lives that they were living before,” said Dr. Foster.

The Arizona Burn Foundation is providing accommodation in the Phoenix area for 20 family members of these six survivors.

Some Valleywise Health caregivers have even offered their own homes.

Donations are going toward hotels, transportation, and emotional services.

“We do know this is a long-term impact for these families and we’re trying to make their stay as comfortable as possible,” said Rex Albright, the foundation’s CEO.

Dr. Foster says it will be six months to a year before these patients can return to normalcy. As traumatic, he expects many of them to suffer from PTSD and will need both mental and physical support throughout their healing journey.

Despite the long road ahead, he said all victims are on track to recover.

As these brave individuals undergo intensive medical treatment and rehabilitation, we stand in solidarity with them, sending our thoughts, prayers, and well wishes for a full and speedy recovery. The road ahead may be long and challenging, but we have faith in their strength and resilience.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to the medical professionals and first responders who are working tirelessly to provide the best possible care for these burn victims. Their dedication and expertise are invaluable in helping these individuals overcome this traumatic ordeal.

  • Southern California wildfires: Damage wrought by wind and fires raises risk of landslides, debris flows in LA County burn areas

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Fierce winds and devastating wildfires have shifted land in the burn areas of the Eaton and Palisades fires, raising the risk of landslides and debris flows, the director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works said Thursday.

At a morning news conference, Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Director Mark Pestrella was asked about a landslide that severely damaged a house in Pacific Palisades after the Palisades Fire began.

“Both areas suffered watershed damage … to such a significance that we expect massive debris-laden flows when it rains,” Pestrella said.

The home in question, which sits above the Pacific Coast Highway, apparently emerged from the fire unscathed but sustained other major damage – it was seen in aerial and ground footage effectively split in half.

A landslide damaged a home in the Palisades Fire burn area.

A landslide damaged a home in the Palisades Fire burn area.

The Los Angeles Fire Department and its damage assessment teams are still trying to figure out what exactly happened.

“If you look right above (the home) you’re going to see a lot of smoldering debris and things that have burned,” said LAFD Capt. Erik Scott. “It’s apparent the infrastructure is absolutely compromised… the water is still flowing from the area… It’s damaged so significantly that is has been red-tagged.

Pestrella explained that the current flood control system is designed to handle debris flows, but “in an event that we have major rain, we do expect that all areas will be impacted by debris flows that will be hazardous to human health.”

“In order to address this, we are developing plans for both areas to capture and hold this debris back as much as we can during a rain event,” Pestrella said.

Fierce winds and devastating wildfires have shifted land in the burn areas of the Eaton and Palisades fires, raising the risk of mudslides and debris flows, the director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works said.

The possibility of rain is in the forecast at the end of January, Pestrella added.

He went on to note that the Palisades is suffering from raveling of the slopes, gas lines and water lines that were destroyed in the wildfire, adding that a massive amount of water streamlined into the region during firefight.

DWP is working with CalTrans to maintain the burn areas slopes, whose soil has become fragile even amid the lack of rain in recent months, Pestrella said.

The traumatized region made it through Wednesday without explosive fire growth after forecasters warned of another round of particularly dangerous winds.

Yet with firefighters still battling the two largest fires, which have killed 25 people and destroyed more than 12,000 structures, government officials are starting the epic job that will unfold over years: clearing Altadena, Pacific Palisades and other ravaged communities of toxic ash and debris. That will be followed by the rebuilding of homes, restaurants, schools, boutiques, banks and houses of worship – all while finding financing for the work.

An order prohibiting the cleanup or removal of debris from critical fire areas, including Pacific Palisades and Altadena, until a hazardous materials inspection is completed was issued.

Because of the ongoing firefighting battle and the dangerous debris in burned areas, officials said Thursday that residents anxious to see what, if anything, is left of their homes will have to wait for at least another week. The losses range from multimillion-dollar ocean-view mansions to modest homes that once welcomed returning World War II GIs.

Hillsides have become unstable behind damaged homes, and the small landslide in Pacific Palisades this week sent debris into the streets, officials said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

As Southern California continues to battle devastating wildfires, the damage caused by the combination of strong winds and fires is raising concerns about the increased risk of landslides and debris flows in Los Angeles County’s burn areas.

The recent wildfires have scorched thousands of acres of land, destroying homes and vegetation that once held the soil in place. With the loss of this natural barrier, the risk of landslides and debris flows in the affected areas has significantly heightened.

The combination of charred land, heavy rainfall, and steep terrain creates the perfect conditions for these dangerous events to occur. Without the roots of plants and trees to anchor the soil, heavy rainfall can easily trigger landslides and debris flows, posing a serious threat to communities in the burn areas.

Authorities are urging residents in these areas to stay vigilant and be prepared for the possibility of landslides and debris flows. It is crucial for residents to have an emergency plan in place and to stay informed about weather conditions and evacuation orders.

As the wildfires continue to rage on, the risk of landslides and debris flows remains a major concern for residents and emergency responders alike. It is important for everyone to take precautions and stay safe during this challenging time.
