  • Burnley vs Leeds: Who comes out on top in a battle between a record-breaking defence and a ruthless attack? | Football News

One of the biggest games of the Championship season will kick-off at Turf Moor on Monday night, live on Sky Sports.

Burnley and Leeds were among the favourites to win promotion back to the Premier League before a ball was kicked this season and both have lived up to that billing.

Daniel Farke’s Leeds currently lead the Championship with 59 points, one point ahead of second-placed Sheffield Utd and three ahead of Monday’s opposition, Burnley.

    Monday 27th January 7:00pm

    Kick off 8:00pm

Burnley have won six points fewer than at the same stage of their last Championship season in 2022/23 when they were promoted as champions with 101 points.

While they may be disappointed at this stage to not occupy one of the two automatic promotions spots, this campaign has so far been a successful one at that is mostly down to their defence.

Burnley backline proving impossible to break down

The Clarets have conceded just nine goals in their 28 league games this season – the joint-fewest ever by any team at this stage of an English Football League season. The only team to match this feat was Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side of 2004-05, who went on to win the Premier League title, conceding a joint-English League record-low 15 goals.

Fewest league goals conceded after 28 games

    Team League Conceded Final position
    Burnley (2024/25) Championship (2nd tier) 9 ?
    Chelsea (04/05) Premier League (1st tier) 9 1st
    Gillingham (95/96) Division 3 (4th tier) 10 2nd
    Liverpool (78/79) Division 1 (1st tier) 11 1st
    Stockport (1921/22) Div 3 North (3rd tier) 11 1st

If Burnley continue conceding goals at this sparse rate of 0.32 per game, they would concede between 14 or 15 goals by the end of the season so could potentially beat that record set by Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2004-05 and Preston way back in the first ever league season in 1888-89.

Those were both set in seasons with less than 46 games. The lowest number of goals conceded in a 46-game season was 20 by Gillingham in Division 3 in 1995-96. To beat that record Scott Parker’s team have to concede less than 11 goals over their remaining 18 fixtures.

Burnley’s defence has clearly not been giving away anything this season, having not made an error leading to a single goal as of yet.

Burnley’s defensive numbers are made more impressive given they do let the opposition have chances. Parker’s team have faced 264 shots in the League this season – 24 teams have faced fewer in the top 4 tiers in 2024/25 with Leeds, interestingly, facing the fewest (180).

Highlights of the Sky Bet Championship match between Plymouth and Burnley

However, 61 of the 70 shots on target Burnley have faced this season have been saved, giving the Clarets the best save ratio in the top 4 tiers in 2024-25 (87.1 per cent).

Unsurprisingly, Burnley come out on top across the top four tiers in English football for a number of defensive metrics with more clean sheets (19) and a better xG against (-14.48) than any other side.

Comparing Burnley’s defensive numbers to teams in Europe’s major Leagues, the Clarets achievements still stand up. Atletico Madrid have conceded the fewest goals across the major Leagues this season with 14 in 21 matches – five goals more than Burnley in seven fewer games.

League-leading Leeds will try and burst through Claret wall

Up against the country’s best defence on Monday night is statistically its best attack.

Whilst the stats above do show Leeds have performed well defensively this season, it is in attack where they have really shone.

Daniel Farke’s side have scored 53 goals this season – the most by any team in England’s top four tiers and six more than any other Championship team.

    Image:
Leeds have scored the most goals in the Championship

Ahead of this weekend’s action, Leeds have also had the more shots (463) and shots on target (160) than any other team in senior English League football.

Again comparing from Europe’s major leagues, only Bayern Munich (58) have scored more League goals this season than Leeds.

And Leeds have had more shot and shots on target than any team from those Leagues this season.

When Leeds last won promotion from the Championship as title winners in 2019/20, Marcelo Bielsa’s team had seven points fewer at this stage than Farke’s side this season and had also scored 10 goals fewer.

Everything bodes well for Leeds’ efforts to gain promotion back to the Premier League after two seasons in the second tier. But if they are to increase the three-point gap on Burnley on Monday night, they will have to find a way to breach a defence only nine teams have managed to find a way past this season.

In one corner, we have Burnley with their record-breaking defence, having conceded just 39 goals in 38 Premier League matches last season. In the other corner, we have Leeds with their ruthless attack, scoring 62 goals in the same number of matches.

It’s a clash of styles as Burnley’s resolute backline led by the likes of James Tarkowski and Ben Mee look to shut down Leeds’ dynamic attacking trio of Patrick Bamford, Jack Harrison, and Raphinha. Can Burnley’s defence stand strong against Leeds’ relentless pressure and creativity? Or will Leeds’ attacking prowess prove too much for Burnley to handle?

With both teams looking to make a statement early in the season, this match promises to be a thrilling encounter. Who will come out on top in this battle between defence and attack? Stay tuned to find out.

There were only 31 seconds on the clock when Manor Solomon converted Dan James’s first-time cross to give Leeds the lead against Norwich last Wednesday and help push them back to the top of the table.

The Whites went on to win the game 2-0, with James scoring the second goal.

“When DJ [Dan James] plays, I know that I need to be switched on,” Solomon told BBC Radio Leeds.

“When the ball is on the other flank, I know that I need to be inside because DJ is really fast.

“It was a great delivery and we opened the game really well.”

Solomon was an injury doubt for the match, having picked up a hamstring issue in the win over Sheffield Wednesday, but the 25-year-old said he is feeling “confident”.

“I’m feeling really good, I’m feeling like I’m back to myself,” Solomon added.

“I think I can get even better and I just want to continue like this.”

  • Burnley v Leeds prediction: Championship Betting tips and odds

    Burnley v Leeds tips

Leeds can extend their lead at the top of the Championship tonight if they can beat third-placed Burnley at Turf Moor (kick-off 8pm, Sky Sports Main Event).

Daniel Farke’s side are one-point clear of second-placed Sheffield United, and three clear of tonight’s opponents as they look to return to the Premier League after two seasons in the EFL.

Leeds go into the gcontest unbeaten in their last 11 games, since a 1-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers back in November.

This is one of just three defeats United have suffered in the league this season, with the others against Millwall at the Den, and at home to tonight’s opponents at Elland Road – both 1-0.

Burnley have gone about their business very quietly this season, with all the talk about Leeds and Sheffield United but Scott Parker’s side have only lost twice all season, also losing at Millwall, as well as away to Sunderland – both also 1-0.

They go into tonight’s game unbeaten in 16, a run which includes nine wins, including a 2-1 victory away at Norwich and a 2-0 win over the Blades at Bramall Lane.

    Too close to call

Burnley are also unbeaten in their last 13 home league games, winning six and drawing seven while conceding just four goals. Their last home defeat came in May when they were beaten 2-1 by Nottingham Forest on the last day of last season, finally ending an awful season in the Premier League.

It was one of 24 defeats from 38 games played, which saw the side relegated back to the Championship, while manager Vincent Kompany got a move to Bayern Munich.

When you consider that Leeds have lost just two of their last 13 away league games, winning five and drawing six, then a draw is a very good option. They have also only scored an average of 1.4 goals per game during that period.

Football betting sites have Leeds as the slight favourites at 6/4, with Burnley at 5/2 and a draw at 21/10. If you want to be even more specific you can get 21/4 on a 1-1 draw – which seems very generous.

Burnley v Leeds prediction 1: BTTS and draw – 4/1 BetVictor

    Flemming to keep on scoring

Burnley forward Zian Flemming has scored five goals in his last four games including two last time out in the 5-0 win over Plymouth at Home Park and two in the recent 3-1 FA Cup win over Reading.

The 26-year-old, on loan from Millwall, has eight goals from his 20 appearances for the Clarets and betting sites are offering 7/2 on him scoring anytime tonight, or you can get 35/1 on him scoring another brace.

Burnley v Leeds prediction 2: Flemming to score at any time – 7/2 BoyleSports

Burnley will face off against Leeds in an exciting Championship clash this weekend. Both teams are in good form and will be looking to secure a crucial victory.

In terms of betting tips, it’s worth considering that Burnley have been strong at home this season, winning the majority of their matches at Turf Moor. Leeds, on the other hand, have been inconsistent on the road, so Burnley may have the edge in this match.

As for odds, Burnley are currently the favorites to win, with odds of around 2.00. Leeds are the underdogs, with odds of around 3.50. A draw is also a possibility, with odds of around 3.00.

  • Burnley v Leeds: EFL Championship – live | Championship

    Key events

I’m really looking forward to seeing Ao Tanaka. I’ve not seen loads of Leeds this term but like what I’ve seen of him, and am reliably informed by a Leeds-supporting mate that he’s been there best player.

Email! “You drew the long straw then?” asks Jeremy Boyce. “This is as tasty a match up as you suggested. Top scorers v top defenders. Top of the table v third, in a group of four class teams, two of which will have to go through the nightmare of the playoffs, and they all have experience of that. Is the top of the Championship better than the bottom of the Prem? We’ll find out next season. Burnley need a 7-0 to go top tonight, but I’m thinking a regulation Scott Parker 1-0 would do them. Leeds will need all of their 66% possession to break down the Clarets’ defence. Fast start? Solomon four mins? We’ll find out shortly.”

I can’t see Burnley shutting Leeds out a second time – they won 1-0 at Elland Road earlier in the season – nor can I see anyone finishing above Leeds. They just have too many ways of scoring.

On the other hand, Leeds have weaknesses at either end of the pitch. In net, Illan Meslier has endured a miserable period and isn’t necessarily over it, while up front, Joël Piroe isn’t the class of the players behind him.

Leeds will certainly ask some different questions of them. In particular, the three behind the striker – James, Aaronson and Solomon – are capable of causing problems, able to carry the ball, attack space and shoot. It’s a terrific blend, which is why players as talented as Willy Gnonto and Largie Ramazani are on the bench.

There were signs in midweek that Burnley, owners of the best defensive record in the country, are looking to play more expansively. It may simply be that they were playing Plymouth, the bottom team, but they may also feel that in order to get one of the two automatic promotion places, more goals will be necessary.

And Daniel Farke does likewise, bringing in Gruev, back from injury, for Rothwell in midfield.

    Preamble

Pre-match, it’s the job of the MBMer to amp up the situation. Generally speaking, this an easy activity, given one of the reasons football keeps us coming back is the prospect that, with no warning, we might see something brilliant, hilarious or disgraceful.

But sometimes there’s a game of such obvious import and interest that is does all the work by itself, and Burnley v Leeds is one such.

The home side, third in the league, are in pretty decent form, having walloped Plymouth 5-0 in midweek and won six of their last 10 games, while the visitors – three points ahead – and one ahead of Sheffield United with a game in hand – have won seven. They, along with Sunderland – four points off the lead in fourth – are well clear of the pack, automatic promotion likely to go to two of the four.

Tonight’s match-up is also fascinating because it features the division’s best attack – Leeds’ 53 goals is five more than Norwich – against its best defence – Burnley’s nine conceded is 10 fewer than tonight’s opponents. And if to all that you add a night game under the lights along with some of the best individuals outside the Premier League, you have a tantalising prospect primed to elevate our evening.

  • Jonjo Shelvey: Burnley sign former England midfielder on short-term deal

Burnley have signed former Newcastle United and England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old joins following the expiration of his contract with Turkish Super Lig club Eyupspor.

An England international with five caps, Shelvey also played in Turkey with Caykur Rizespor and arrives at Turf Moor having been on trial with the Championship club this month.

“I like the club as a whole – every time I have played against Burnley at Turf Moor it’s been tough,” he said.

“I’m part of this team now and my aim is to do my best to help this club get back into the Premier League, where it belongs.”

Having come through Charlton’s academy, he went on to join Liverpool and made 65 appearances for the Reds before joining Swansea City.

He spent three years with the Swans and then signed for Newcastle United in 2016 where he helped them win promotion from the Championship in his first full season.

After seven years at Newcastle, Shelvey joined Nottingham Forest before leaving for Turkey in September 2023.

He joins a Burnley side third in the Championship table and two points off the automatic promotion places.

Burnley FC have made a surprise move in the transfer market by signing former England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey on a short-term deal. The 29-year-old, who was a free agent after leaving Newcastle United at the end of last season, has joined the Clarets until the end of the current campaign.

Shelvey, who has represented England at senior level, brings a wealth of Premier League experience to Sean Dyche’s side. Known for his passing range and ability to dictate play from midfield, the midfielder will be looking to make an immediate impact at Turf Moor.

Burnley fans will be hoping that Shelvey can provide a creative spark in the middle of the park and help the team climb up the table in the second half of the season. With his vision and technique, the former Liverpool and Swansea City player could prove to be a shrewd signing for the Lancashire club.

It remains to be seen whether Shelvey will be able to rediscover his best form in a Burnley shirt, but one thing is for certain – his arrival has certainly added some excitement to the club’s January transfer window. Welcome to Turf Moor, Jonjo Shelvey! #BurnleyFC #JonjoShelvey #TransferNews

  • Talking Tactics: Burnley (A) How Regis Le Bris (almost!) got the better of Scott Parker

Sunderland returned to League action on Friday night in a bid to close the gap on the summit of the Championship away at Turf Moor In what was a closely contested game, neither team could be separated, and a 0-0 draw meant Sunderland returned back to the North East with a share of the spoils – although the performance in the second 45 should have won the game pretty comfortably.

So, how did Le Bris set up his side in the second half?

    Sunderland Line-Up

With Aji Alese injured and Patrick Roberts rested the week prior, Sunderland were expected to make at least two changes to the side that were victorious against Portsmouth in the previous league fixture, with Dennis Cirkin and Roberts both coming back into the side in their usual roles. With Chris Rigg returning from injury, he too slotted into his familiar position in midfield, but a surprise debut was handed to new signing Enzo Le Fee on the left wing to replace Adil Aouchiche.

    Sunderland Line-Up v Burnley (A)
    FOTMOB

As suspected Sunderland switched back to their usual 4-3-3 shape with Le Fee coming in on the left and Rigg operating in that advanced number eight role in possession but pushing up alongside Wilson Isidor to form a 4-4-2 out of possession. Given Burnley’s heavily passive possession figures Sunderland weren’t expected to have much of the ball during the game, looking to exploit Burnley in transition – something that ideally suits RLB’s typical philosophy. Burnley do incredibly well to limit transition opportunities though, and that’s something we’ll touch on later on.

    Opposition line-up

Scott Parker made one change himself from the Clarets’ last league encounter, in which they came away from Ewood Park with a 1-0 victory. The only change saw Jeremy Sarmiento make way for Lyle Foster on the left-hand side. Burnley’s ever-present backline remained in for this one having managed to shut out the vast majority of the league at home, only conceding four times at Turf Moor and no more than once in any of those games.

    Opposition Line-Up (A)
    FOTMOB

Burnley set up in a traditional 4-2-3-1 with Brownhill and Cullen operating in a usual double pivot to protect their back four. While in possession Burnley tend to operate as two separate units, both of the midfield pairing form a back six with their defensive line and then the attacking players isolate themselves further forward as a unit of four, meaning that when Burnley do turn the ball over there are plenty of numbers in the defensive third to smother counter-attacks before they create any real danger.

    Feeling the opposition out

The first half of this game offered very little in terms of moments of magic from a neutral perspective, however it was fascinating to see how both teams were settling into the patterns of play adopted by each other As discussed, what makes Burnley such an interesting side is their unique approach to possession football.

Normally, when discussing possession-heavy sides such as Swansea or Leeds, the clear weakness is when turnovers occur in the opposition’s final third and teams are able to quickly spring in transition to catch the side that have overcommitted bodies forward while in control of the ball. In stark contrast, Burnley retain and recycle the ball far more in the middle third of the pitch.

By holding possession in a ‘neutral’ area of the pitch they entice the opposition to venture out of their defensive shape to press ball carriers only then to rely on vertical transitions to advance up the pitch, often culminating in long diagonal balls with the aim of feeding their wingers who’ve made runs in behind the advancing defensive line.

Whilst we’re not seeing the goal-greedy Parker of old with his Bournemouth and Fulham teams that got promoted with ridiculous goalscoring prowess, we’re seeing a different style of play now that focuses much more on the war of attrition. At the expense of any real attacking output, Burnley work in a way that they know they’ll come away with a clean sheet at worst, and it’s up to their forwards to secure the three points.

    Sunderland’s shape and press

Following a first half that only really saw half-chances from Jadon Anthony after springing Cirkin on the long diagonal, Sunderland took the game to Burnley during the second 45 and really demonstrated the work Le Bris does behind the scenes researching his opponents. Sunderland raised their defensive line and structured their pressing triggers around the ball progression of Josh Brownhill.

    Shot Map v Burnley (A)
    Mclachbot

Once the midfielder progressed beyond his usual position Sunderland deployed their press and helped to smother any Burnley moves from materialising, ultimately limiting the hosts to just four shots in the second half, one of which came in the opening minute of the second half and two others coming from set pieces, Jadon Antony was the only other player to record a shot from open play and made it very much one-way traffic as the game progressed.

    Le Fee, Le Fwah

Despite having not completed a full 90 minutes since 31st of October, Enzo Le Fee showed some real signs of quality during his debut. Completing 3/6 of his dribbles, seven recoveries and creating one big chance, the Frenchman looked a cut above despite operating in an unfamiliar position and only a handful of training sessions with his new teammates.

Passes into the Opposition Box 24/25
    Mclachbot

Most impressively for me was his ability to retain possession and prove to be press-resistant in a league far more physically imposing than he’s used to. Special mentions for the stunning turn and through ball to Isidor that saw the forward smash the outside of the post – the passing range on his weaker foot was a joy to watch and I’m sure we’ll see many more balls like that once Le Fee begins to operate more centrally.

    Chance Creation Metrics

It’s hard to ignore the two penalty misses that skew with the final metrics from this game however those chances aside, Sunderland managed to create an xG of 1.15 from Open Play (2.85xG inc Penalties), which demonstrates that the underlying data behind our results is still trending in an upward direction despite the maximum points haul not coming our way. To add some context to this, of the sides Burnley have faced at Turf Moor this season Sunderland rank comfortably highest for xG created before even adding in the penalty numbers. Middlesborough drew 1-1 and only registered 0.88xG and Blackburn only 0.31xG back in August, demonstrating when compared with our result at Brammall Lane, we’ve given both sides the best games they’ve faced at home this season so far.

xG Metrics in the Championship 24/25
    @BeGriffis

    Strength in depth

With Sunderland now having several options off the bench that Le Bris trusts, making subs earlier is something we’re becoming more accustomed to. Mayenda and Ballard were introduced as the second half wore on and helped to sustain Sunderland’s attacking output into the closing stages of the game.

With Mundle and Watson not far from returning to first team training and Jenson Seelt now back in contention, squad rotation around the 70-minute mark looks to be far more common as we look to turn those draws into wins.

    Protecting Rigg

In only his second game since his return from an ankle injury, Chris Rigg came back into the side and unfortunately didn’t have one of his more impactful games. The teenager only completed 13 passes during his time on the pitch and struggled to make an impact in the ways we’ve come to expect.

That’s okay though, and sometimes as fans we don’t appreciate the hard work Rigg does off the ball, leading the press alongside Isidor while also always trying to act as a passing outlet for Hume and Roberts at all times helps to keep us ticking over.

Hopefully we don’t make the same mistake with Rigg as we’ve made in the past with Callum Doyle, Neil and Jobe. With Le Fee coming in to give the teenager a chance to get himself back up to full speed and confidence with plenty of games left to go.

    Pushing on

While three points at Turf Moor would’ve ended Burnley’s unbeaten home run and helped close the gap at the top of the league, a point is nothing to be ashamed of. With games against Derby tonight and Plymouth on Saturday, Sunderland will be looking to put both sides to the sword and gain some ground on the opposition with Sheffield, Leeds and Burnley all due to face one another in the coming weeks.

While I was extremely frustrated come the final whistle on Friday night, after an opportunity to reflect we can only see this as yet another marker for how well our team can perform and sets us up well for what seems to be a thrilling few weeks before we culminate in a trip to Elland Road.

Regis Le Bris, Fulham’s assistant coach, almost outsmarted Burnley’s manager Scott Parker in a recent away match at Turf Moor. In this edition of Talking Tactics, we’ll break down how Le Bris’s tactical approach nearly earned Fulham a valuable three points on the road.

First and foremost, Le Bris opted for a more defensive formation, with a compact 4-4-2 shape that aimed to frustrate Burnley’s direct style of play. By crowding the midfield and blocking passing lanes, Fulham were able to limit Burnley’s opportunities to play through the middle and force them to play more long balls.

Le Bris also instructed his players to press high up the pitch, disrupting Burnley’s build-up play and forcing them into mistakes. This aggressive pressing style led to Fulham winning the ball back in dangerous areas and creating several goal-scoring opportunities on the counter.

Furthermore, Le Bris made some crucial substitutions at key moments in the match, bringing on fresh legs to maintain the intensity and energy levels of his team. This tactical decision almost paid off, as Fulham came close to scoring a late winner before ultimately settling for a hard-fought draw.

Overall, Regis Le Bris demonstrated his tactical acumen and ability to adapt to different opponents. While Burnley ultimately held on for a draw, it was clear that Le Bris’s tactical approach nearly got the better of Scott Parker on the day. Fulham fans can take heart from the team’s performance and look forward to more tactical battles in the future.

  • EFL Preview: Burnley host Sunderland before Yorkshire rivals meet

Attention turns to the foot of the table on Saturday lunchtime (12:30 GMT) when three of the bottom four are in action.

Cardiff host Swansea in the south Wales derby, having climbed out of the drop zone courtesy of Tuesday’s draw against Watford, who equalised late on.

Although the Bluebirds have squandered leads lately, they are unbeaten in their past five matches in all competitions.

Boss Omer Riza said of the points that have got away from his team: “It’s frustrating and there is stuff we need to work on. That will improve as the season goes on.

“We know we need three points, but we are out of the bottom three for now. It was a good performance and we have to take that into Saturday.”

Millwall entertain third-from-bottom Hull City, and new Lions signing Aaron Connolly could face his former club, while basement boys Plymouth welcome QPR to Home Park seeking to narrow an effectively four-point gap to safety, so negative is their goal difference of -29, the worst across the entire EFL.

New Argyle boss Miron Muslic is seeking to follow up a point against Oxford United in his first game at a lively Home Park on Tuesday and said: “When you go out and you feel that, I was very impressed.

“Now I know what it feels like to play a home game and what Home Park and the Argyle fans and the Green Army can deliver.

“I have nothing but respect for that – this will also give us the boost we need and the confidence we need. It’s like a 12th man almost for the future to face the challenge we have in front of us.”

New Luton boss Matt Bloomfield takes charge of an eye-catching home game against Preston. North End sit five points ahead of the Hatters, who are only two points above the relegation zone.

Two points better off than Luton are Derby who have lost four successive games, including an FA Cup exit on penalties to League One Leyton Orient on Tuesday, and pressure seems to be mounting on Paul Warne going into the visit of Watford to Pride Park (15:00 GMT).

Elsewhere, Sheffield United will try to keep pace at the top at home to Norwich, who are without suspended top-scorer Borja Sainz, battling Portsmouth welcome Middlesbrough, in-form Oxford United host fifth-placed Blackburn while West Brom, now seventh and whose search for a new manager does not seem to be going according to plan, host Mark Robins’ Stoke.

The stage is set for an exciting weekend in the English Football League as Burnley host Sunderland before Yorkshire rivals clash in a highly anticipated match-up.

Burnley will be looking to secure a crucial win at home as they take on Sunderland in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. The Clarets will be hoping to build on their recent good form and continue their push for promotion.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on the Yorkshire rivals as they face off in a fierce battle for bragging rights. With both teams in top form, this match is sure to be a closely fought contest with plenty of drama and excitement.

Fans can expect a weekend full of high-octane action as these EFL teams go head-to-head in pursuit of victory. Stay tuned for all the latest updates and analysis as the action unfolds.

  • Burnley 0-0 Sunderland: Clarets keeper James Trafford saves two Wilson Isidor penalties

Sunderland had Enzo Le Fee making his debut after joining on loan from Roma, and the midfielder showed a glimpse of what he can offer with some terrific skill and a fabulous pass to put Isidor away for their best chance, but he struck the outside of the post.

If Isidor should have put that one away, it was nothing compared with what was to follow.

He grabbed the ball after he had been brought down by CJ Egan-Riley, possibly outside the 18-yard box on first glance, and went for power, but Trafford guessed right and parried it away.

The two were then protagonists again deep into injury time as Anthony Backhouse awarded a second penalty kick after Dennis Cirkin was brought down by substitute Oliver Sonne.

Isidor grabbed the ball again but was made to wait as Trafford needed treatment and was then booked for timewasting before going went for the same spot, albeit closer to the corner, but Trafford repeated his heroics by again getting down to it to make a brilliant save.

These were the first spot-kicks saved by Trafford since the 2023 European Under-21 Championship final when he saved Abel Ruiz’s effort in injury-time as England defeated Spain.

As Trafford basked in adulation, Isidor, Sunderland’s top scorer this season, played the final minutes in a daze, unable to comprehend what had happened and he needed consoling at the final whistle.

What impact this has on his and his team’s promotion hopes, only time will tell.

In a thrilling match between Burnley and Sunderland, Clarets goalkeeper James Trafford emerged as the hero by saving not one, but two penalties from Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor. The game ended in a tense 0-0 draw, with Trafford’s incredible saves ensuring that Burnley walked away with a hard-earned point.

Despite Sunderland’s best efforts to break the deadlock, Trafford stood firm between the posts, displaying incredible reflexes and composure under pressure. His double penalty save will surely go down as one of the standout moments of the match, earning him praise from fans and teammates alike.

The result may have been frustrating for both teams, but Burnley can take heart from Trafford’s performance and use it as motivation for their upcoming fixtures. As for Sunderland, they will have to regroup and focus on converting their chances in front of goal.

Overall, it was a thrilling encounter that showcased the importance of a reliable goalkeeper in high-pressure situations. James Trafford’s heroics will be remembered by both sets of fans for a long time to come.

  • Burnley: James Trafford is heading for the very top, says Scott Parker

Trafford himself recognises that learning on the job in the Premier League may have been difficult, a division with some of the best goalkeepers in world football like Liverpool’s Alisson and Emiliano Martinez at Aston Villa.

But that has been the bedrock for his outstanding consistency in the division below.

“Last year, the average age of a goalkeeper in the Premier League was 28, 29 so I was nine years off the average,” he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

“It shows it is a massive experience-based role for a goalkeeper. But I improved massively and I’m aware of that.

“I’ve improved in a lot of things, whether it’s on the ball, off the ball, defending space or the area, personality, confidence. And I’ll continue to improve.”

Burnley’s young goalkeeper, James Trafford, is catching the eye of many in the football world, including Fulham manager Scott Parker. In a recent interview, Parker heaped praise on the 19-year-old shot-stopper, stating that he believes Trafford has what it takes to reach the very top of the game.

Trafford, who joined Burnley’s academy in 2020, has impressed with his performances for the club’s U23 side and has been training with the first team. Parker, who himself had a successful playing career as a midfielder, has been impressed with Trafford’s composure and shot-stopping abilities.

“I’ve had the chance to watch James in action and I have to say, he’s a real talent,” Parker said. “He’s got all the attributes to make it as a top goalkeeper – he’s quick off his line, has good distribution, and has a strong presence in the box. I really believe he has a bright future ahead of him.”

With Burnley known for producing top-quality goalkeepers, such as Nick Pope and Tom Heaton, Trafford will be hoping to follow in their footsteps and establish himself as a regular in Sean Dyche’s first team. And with the backing of a respected figure like Scott Parker, it seems like the young goalkeeper is on the right path to success.
