  • JCPS, we need equitable school bus transportation now. Here’s what we propose.

Last year’s decision by Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) to eliminate transportation services for magnet and traditional school students has had profound and disproportionate effects on our community, particularly impacting Black and low-income families. This policy change has not only disrupted students’ education but has also exacerbated existing racial and economic disparities within our school system.

This summer, I sat around a table with the mayor, Metro Council president and JCPS and TARC leaders. I watched them put the final touches on an agreement that should have restored service to at least some children disenfranchised only a few months prior. A large press conference followed as many in this community hoped we were on the path to success, even if only marginally. I, along with several other community leaders, stepped away from the table believing the subject matter experts and professionals remaining in the room could get the job done.

    We were wrong.

JCPS has failed to keep promises on magnet school bus transportation

The following months were full of confusion, missteps and finger-pointing. The promise of August turned to September, then October, then December, and now here we sit in January with nothing to show for it all. Yes, we have the necessary bus drivers, but no promise has been kept, and there is no plan. That needs to change. On Jan. 28, the JCPS Board of Education agenda states that they will take action on a “Transportation Plan – Return Service.” That is a good thing, but given the timing and everything connected to this decision, fundamental questions and decisions must be addressed.

The decision to cut transportation has forced many families into untenable situations. Thousands of students opted to change schools or not even apply to schools of their choice due to lack of transportation. Other parents have attempted to keep their children in the desired schools and have taken on the challenge of transportation themselves — adding costs, stress and strain to family’s lives. After suing JCPS for cutting her son’s bus service, a mother now faces legal repercussions for being unable to transport him to school, Louisville Public Media reported. This situation underscores the dire consequences of the district’s actions on families who lack the resources to adapt to sudden policy changes.

Jefferson County Public School students arrive at the Nichols Bus Compound to transfer buses on Friday, August 18, 2023. JCPS had to rethink their strategy after the first day of school saw students arriving home late. Some close to 10pm.

The Louisville Urban League stands in solidarity with these families and calls upon the JCPS school board to take immediate, decisive and comprehensive action to rectify this inequitable situation. We propose the following measures:

Restore school bus service, reopen student assignment process

    1. Restore transportation for the spring semester and next school year: Reinstate bus services for magnet and traditional schools, prioritizing students from low-income households and those residing in areas with limited access to alternative transportation. While only a small number of students may benefit this spring, every little bit counts, and this will give the transportation department time to create more efficiencies for the fall. The more important step is for the superintendent to reopen the assignment process so students who will now have transportation can make their choices based on the new reality. This step is crucial to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to attend the schools of their choice. Both steps must happen together to ensure equity.

    2. Consider outsourcing transportation services: JCPS should seriously explore partnerships with third-party transportation providers to address logistical challenges and improve efficiency. Outsourcing could alleviate the current driver shortage and reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies, ensuring more reliable service for students. I openly acknowledge that with unionized drivers and shortages nationwide, utilizing a third-party company may not be an easy option or solve the problem completely. But the district’s desire to “go it alone” has proven insufficient at best. We owe it to our children to seek the best possible options.

    3. Implement an equitable assignment plan: Develop and enforce a student assignment plan that guarantees access to magnet and traditional schools regardless of a student’s transportation options. This plan should include reserving a percentage of seats in every magnet and traditional school for students who reside in the area of that building. This would not solve the issue for all students but would ensure equitable access to significantly more students than currently available.

Opinion: The Democratic Party doesn’t respect Black Americans. I’m leaving it behind.

Education is a fundamental right, and transportation and economic barriers should not hinder access to it. The current situation not only undermines the academic success of our students but also perpetuates systemic inequities that our community has long struggled to overcome.

We urge the superintendent and JCPS school board to act swiftly in implementing these recommendations, demonstrating a commitment to equity and the well-being of all students. Our children deserve nothing less than full access to the educational opportunities that will shape their futures and, by extension, the future of our community.

JCPS, we need equitable school bus transportation now. Here’s what we propose.

As students, parents, and community members, we have seen firsthand the disparities in school bus transportation within Jefferson County Public Schools. Some students have to wake up hours before school starts just to catch a bus that takes them across town, while others have a short, convenient ride to school. This inequity is unacceptable and must be addressed immediately.

To create a more equitable school bus transportation system, we propose the following changes:

    1. Implement a tiered bus system based on distance from school. By organizing bus routes based on proximity to the school, we can ensure that students who live farther away have access to transportation without having to wake up excessively early.

    2. Increase the number of buses and bus stops in underserved areas. Many students in low-income neighborhoods have to walk long distances to catch a bus, putting their safety at risk. By adding more buses and stops in these areas, we can provide a safer and more convenient transportation option for all students.

    3. Provide transportation options for students with disabilities. Currently, many students with disabilities face challenges in accessing school bus transportation. By offering specialized transportation services, such as wheelchair-accessible buses or door-to-door service, we can ensure that all students have equal access to education.

    4. Improve communication and transparency around bus routes and schedules. Many families struggle to navigate the complex bus system, leading to missed buses and late arrivals at school. By providing clear and easy-to-access information about bus routes and schedules, we can help families plan their transportation more effectively.

Overall, it is essential that JCPS prioritize equitable school bus transportation for all students. By implementing these changes, we can ensure that every student has equal access to education and opportunities for success. Join us in advocating for a more equitable school bus transportation system in JCPS.

  • Marilyn Manson: Unmasked review – should a tour bus really need the age of consent pinned to the wall? | Television & radio

Roll up, roll up – fun times are here again, especially for us ladies! Last week we had 2025’s first addition to the bulging files of true-crime stories, with the documentary series about rapist and serial killer Todd Kohlhepp (The Amazon Review Killer). Now we have the first documentary about a high-profile star claimed by multiple women to be a violent sexual predator long enabled by his fame, money and power to do exactly as he liked, to as many young women as he liked, without fear of consequence.

Marilyn Manson: Unmasked is a meticulously assembled three-part account of the shock-rock musician’s career and what was allegedly happening behind the scenes. All of which, I should say, is denied by Manson (real name Brian Warner) and on screen by his quietly terrifying lawyer Howard King, whose favourite expression seems to be “complete fabrication”.

It follows what has become, depressingly, the traditional trajectory of interviewing the accused’s friends and associates, interwoven with testimony from his alleged victims, and allowing the viewer’s viewpoint to evolve. Former bandmate Stephen Bier is emblematic of the struggle we see play out in so many of what we might call witnesses for the defence in such programmes: keen not to seem unsympathetic, but finding it hard not to let an underlying incredulity show through. Being on a rock tour, he admits, “is a test of your virtue … And minors have different brains, they haven’t developed, et cetera, et cetera. But that’s a legal problem!” Bier has an unfortunate tendency to punctuate his thoughts with laughter. He also notes that the tour manager would write the age of consent up in the bus “because they’re different in every state”. He seems to think this is proof of something good. But, gosh – I might venture that it is indicative of something quite other.

Evan Rachel Wood. Photograph: Channel 4

Manson’s most famous accuser is his former girlfriend and now film and television star Evan Rachel Wood. She testified at a 2018 congressional hearing regarding a domestic-violence prevention bill to years of horrific abuse at a partner’s hands, and later named him as Manson. It encouraged other women to come forward with similar stories, and lawsuits against the musician began to accumulate. Some he has settled, others are ongoing. According to his fans, Wood is orchestrating a campaign of lies against him and persuading other women to join in. Wood asks if that is more likely than the notion that “a bad person has been doing bad things for a really long time”.

Beyond setting out the timelines and testimonies that must form the spine of this kind of documentary, Marilyn Manson: Unmasked teases out the question of how able people should have been to distinguish between performative transgressions designed to shock (and build the notoriety upon which his career depended) and a man hiding terrible proclivities in plain sight. There is plentiful footage of Manson on stage saying to his screaming fans things like “Which one of you sixth graders wants me to make you feel like a goddamn eighth grader?” and “Send some of those little eighth-grader girls up here so I can put my whole arm inside them”, and referring to their “sticky pussies”. I think most of us would have been on high alert by then. But perhaps it would depend on how much money he was making for us. And how much we thought we could blame anyone for getting involved with a self-proclaimed Satan lover. “If you’re a vegetarian, don’t go to a hamburger shop,” advises one of his former colleagues.

What are we to make of the crew who apparently didn’t realise a barely conscious Wood was, she says now, being raped by Manson as they filmed the Heart-Shaped Glasses – a Lolita reference – music video? Their silence and professed ignorance is proof, according to King, of another of those “complete fabrications” by a woman determined “to destroy Brian professionally and emotionally”. Again, it is possible to feel quite otherwise.

What do we make of the media who at his peak uncritically adored Manson’s controversial ways and endless quotability? Not that all of his comments made it into print. The last episode contains previously unheard excerpts of the audiotapes that were a prelude to a Rolling Stone magazine piece. For example, “I’m not into rape whatsoever … I prefer to break a woman down to the point where they have no choice but to submit to me. Rape is for cowards, for lazy people.” It chimes perfectly with the onscreen testimonies of his alleged victims, including and especially Wood. But it was probably just his persona speaking. Just a performance. Because who could believe there are men out there who are really like that?

Marilyn Manson: Unmasked is on Channel 4 now

Marilyn Manson: Unmasked review – should a tour bus really need the age of consent pinned to the wall?

In the wake of shocking allegations against Marilyn Manson, the controversial rock star’s behavior has once again come under scrutiny. The recent documentary, Marilyn Manson: Unmasked, delves into the dark and disturbing world of the musician, shedding light on the allegations of abuse and manipulation that have plagued him for years.

One of the most disturbing revelations from the documentary is the fact that Manson’s tour bus allegedly had the age of consent pinned to the wall. This raises serious questions about the singer’s attitude towards consent and boundaries, and whether he has used his position of power to exploit vulnerable young women.

The documentary features interviews with Manson’s former partners and collaborators, who paint a picture of a controlling and manipulative individual who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. The allegations of abuse and coercion are deeply troubling, and raise serious concerns about the treatment of women in the music industry.

It is clear that Manson’s behavior has had a lasting impact on those who have crossed paths with him, and the documentary serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked power and influence. It is essential that we hold individuals like Manson accountable for their actions, and ensure that survivors of abuse are listened to and supported.

Overall, Marilyn Manson: Unmasked is a powerful and thought-provoking documentary that shines a light on the dark side of the music industry. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of consent and respect, and the need to challenge toxic attitudes and behaviors wherever they may be found.

  • ‘We fell out because I wrote about farts on the tour bus’

‘We fell out because I wrote about farts on the tour bus’

Back in 2003 Franz Ferdinand leapt out of Glasgow College of Art to make being in a band look like the best thing in the world. From the frontman Alex Kapranos’s Roxy Music-meets-Kraftwerk fashion sense to the bassist Bob Hardy’s inability to play a note before joining the group, not to mention spiky, vibrant songs such as Darts of Pleasure and Take Me Out — “records that girls can dance to” according to their manifesto — it was all so fresh, so vibrant, so hopeful.

Fast-forward 23 years and life has taken its toll. “I feel the fabric of existence come undone,” Kapranos bemoans on Audacious, the opening track of the band’s appropriately titled new album, The Human Fear. The music is as bright and bold as ever, albeit with a newly doomed romantic quality reminiscent of Scott Walker, but from addressing the daily grind on Build It Up to fretting about fretting on Everyday Dreamer, Franz Ferdinand do seem to have a lot of weight riding on their now middle-aged shoulders.

“It wasn’t the plan,” says Kapranos, a well-preserved, short-haired 52-year-old, when I point this out to him. He’s in the Charlotte Street Hotel in London with Hardy, the two remaining original band members after the guitarist Nick McCarthy left in 2016 and the drummer Paul Thomson followed in 2021. “It was only afterwards that I realised, oh my God, every single song has the same essential fear,” he adds.

On the album, The Doctor is about the fear of leaving an institution. Night or Day is about the fear of committing to a relationship. Tell Me I Should Stay is about the fear of saying goodbye to someone. And so it goes on, with a dissonance between the cheerful music saying one thing and the anxious lyrics saying another.

Kapranos became a father last year, which made all his usual fears seem trivial — and easier to write about. “The songs simply come from me and Bob talking about the things on our minds. That is how we started: as an imaginary band. Most bands are made up of people who want to play guitar and be good musicians, but we had no desire for craft for craft’s sake.”

At least Kapranos had ten years of experience of being in actual bands before Franz Ferdinand took off; Hardy had none whatsoever. “I never had the patience to learn a musical instrument so it was a steep learning curve for me,” says Hardy, who was yet to graduate from Glasgow School of Art when the music took off. “But the price of entry was learning to play the bass and even I could do that. All I knew is that in art school anything goes, so I brought that attitude to the band. You know, ‘Why don’t we project this film against the stage?’”

Kapranos and Hardy were working in the kitchen of Groucho St Judes, Glasgow’s outpost of the London private members’ club, when in 2000 they had the idea of forming a band to play at their friends’ parties. “Alex showed me how to play a song he had written called This Fire, which only had two chords, and then we met Nick and Paul,” Hardy recalls. “Our first gig was in a friends’ bedroom in 2002. Before I knew it we were recording our first album in Sweden.”

The 20 best songs of 2024, from Beyoncé to the Cure

Before long Franz Ferdinand were a phenomenon, featured on the January 10, 2004, cover of the NME alongside the proclamation: “This band will change your life.” By then Kapranos was 31, and had come to the conclusion only a year or so earlier that it was never going to happen for him.

“I remember reaching 27 and thinking, this is the age I’m meant to die. But I can’t, because I’m still not a rock star,” he says. “When we recorded our first single, Darts of Pleasure, I had to pull a sickie.”

Right from the off, Franz Ferdinand’s sharply written pop songs with an underground edge made an impact. “In the early 2000s Britpop was over and it was all post-rock — long, meandering jams with no melody whatsoever,” Kapranos says. “And we liked the Everly Brothers. So, touched with a bit of Scottish contrariness, we aimed to do something completely different from everything that was happening.”

Hardy, who left his native Bradford for Glasgow in 1999, remembers joining Franz Ferdinand and then not returning home for the next three years. “I had nothing to compare it to, so I thought, well, we’re good, so of course we’re playing to thousands of people each night all over the world. That’s what bands do, right?”

“After so many years of rejection I said no to nothing,” Kapranos says of that time. “I wanted to talk about my songs, I wanted to play as many concerts as possible, and as a result we completely exhausted ourselves. I ended up living in a state of euphoria mixed with self-loathing, which is very unhealthy.”

It led to some friction. In 2004 the band had a punch-up in Paris. McCarthy, the band’s natural extrovert, had a tendency to invite whoever he met that day to come backstage after the concert, which led to blazing rows between him and Kapranos. “He’s a good-hearted guy, but he always wanted to keep the party going. The real problem wasn’t Nick but the incorrigible people he kept bringing back.”

The 25 best albums of 2024 — the critics’ choice, ranked

Even Kapranos and Hardy had a falling out around the release of their third album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand (2009). “We decided to meet in Orkney to sort it out, simply because neither of us had been there before,” Kapranos says.

Was that such a good idea? Surely a remote island like Orkney would be an excellent place to murder someone. “The cliffs! He just slipped!” Hardy gasps, imagining the scenario.

The reason for the argument was comically trivial. In 2006 Kapranos was writing a food column for The Guardian and using it as a covert tour diary for the band. “I started one of the pieces with the line, ‘I wake up to the smell of my bandmates’ farts’,” Kapranos says, after a bit of to and fro between him and Hardy on whether he should recount the unfortunate incident at all. “Because what happens on a tour bus.”

“The implication was that you don’t fart,” Hardy retorts, still sounding aggrieved after all these years.

“You don’t smell your own farts,” Kapranos protests.

“If a journalist on the tour bus had written it, you would have gone apoplectic.”

“So basically Bob was pissed off that I told the world he farted. He hasn’t ever since, obviously.”

    Franz Ferdinand band photo.

“I remember reaching 27 and thinking: this is the age I’m meant to die,” Kapranos says

    FIONA TORRE

Kapranos says the worst thing about being in a band with friends is that by spending so much time together on a tour bus, odorous emissions and all, you end up not talking to each other because you’re trying to preserve your independence. Hardy adds that constant drinking, which raises the highs and lowers the lows, doesn’t help. It all got too much for Thomson, who quit in a dramatic fashion: refusing to turn up to a tour rehearsal. Did he give a reason for leaving the band?

“He had just bought a new coffee machine,” Hardy says. “He didn’t want to leave it.”

“That and his cats and dogs,” Kapranos adds.

Both say that the Franz Ferdinand trajectory follows a formula: they come off the road, go back to their lives, and make no plans to see each other again. Then Kapranos sends over a few songs and before they know it they’re in a kitchen, talking about what to do next. Where does Kapranos’s drive come from?”

“Oh God, lie back on the couch and tell me about your mother,” says Kapranos, who spent his early years in Sunderland before moving with his Greek-British family to Glasgow when he was seven. “It was the usual shit. Alienation, isolation, a childhood retreat into the imagination to escape from an environment that was deeply unpleasant … It’s why singers tend to be introverted people. On stage, you amplify a small part of yourself to make up for the rest of you. And as the child of an immigrant you know where you’re from while also knowing you’re not from there, which is also odd.”

The 9 best books about music of 2024: Blondie, Bowie, Zappa and more

At least Kapranos has now got his life on a relatively even keel. As well as becoming a father, he’s married to the French singer Clara Luciani. “She has a totally different approach to me,” he says. “Before going on stage I want to talk to nobody for two hours because someone might say something that will get in my head, but if you go to her dressing room she’s got 15 hairdressers around her. It’s good to see a different way.”

Despite its fretful tone, The Human Fear continues with Franz Ferdinand’s approach of never taking anything too seriously, least of all themselves. Take Me Out, their biggest hit, was partially inspired by the outrageously cheesy Eye of the Tiger by Survivor, while a song on the new album called Black Eyelashes references a style of Greek folk music called rebetiko. As Kapranos points out, guitar bands were unfashionable when Franz Ferdinand started out and they are unfashionable today, which is a good argument for carrying on regardless.

“When we began, there was an assumption that we would not be played on the radio,” he concludes. “We never worried about that then and we don’t worry about it now. We did once stumble accidentally into fashion, which proved to be a disconcerting experience. Since then we’ve just got on with our own thing.”

The Human Fear (Domino) is out on Jan 10

Have you ever had a falling out with someone over something you never thought would cause a rift in your relationship? Well, that’s exactly what happened to me when I wrote about farts on the tour bus.

It all started innocently enough – we were on a long tour bus ride, cramped together for hours on end. As the hours passed, the inevitable happened – someone let out a loud and smelly fart. Instead of ignoring it like a normal person, I decided to write about it in my journal. I thought it was funny and a harmless way to pass the time.

Little did I know, one of my fellow passengers stumbled upon my journal and read my entry about the fart incident. They were not amused. In fact, they were downright offended. They couldn’t believe I would write about something so crude and embarrassing.

And just like that, our friendship was strained. They couldn’t look at me the same way anymore, and I couldn’t understand why something so trivial would cause such a rift between us.

So, let this be a lesson to all – be careful what you write about, especially when it comes to bodily functions on a tour bus. You never know who might stumble upon your words and take offense. And remember, some things are better left unsaid (or unwritten).

  • Mayor Will Travel Rose Parade Route in Vintage Bus with Family, Special Guests – Pasadena Now

Mayor Will Travel Rose Parade Route in Vintage Bus with Family, Special Guests – Pasadena Now

    [City of Pasadena photo]

When the 136th Rose Parade winds its way through Pasadena on New Year’s Day, Mayor Victor M. Gordo will share his ride along the route in a piece of American history with his family and some very special guests: Pasadena residents Terry and Rebecca Crews, and iconic Dodgers broadcaster Jaime Jarrín, accompanied by Jaime’s son Jorge and daughter-in-law Maggie.

The Mayor and his guests will travel the parade route in a restored 1925 White Motor Co. bus, known as #176, that once shuttled tourists through Yellowstone National Park. The vehicle, which served the park until the late 1930s, has had several owners, including casino magnate Bill Harrah, before being acquired by its current owner, Page Whyte, in 2004. Despite accumulating several inches of dust, it only needed a thorough cleaning, new tires, and a new battery. After adding fresh gasoline, it started right up.

Terry Crews, currently the host of NBC’s top rated alternative series “America’s Got Talent,” which is in its seventeenth season, is an author, action-movie hero, sitcom star, children’s book illustrator, advertising pitchman, playable video game character, talent show host, high-end furniture designer, and human rights activist. A three-time People Magazine Sexiest Man Alive actor, he has starred as a series regular in three consecutive TV series surpassing 100 episodes: NBC’s Golden Globe Award-winning series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Are We There Yet?” and “Everybody Hates Chris.” Crews is set to star in “Tales of the Walking Dead” and hosts “America’s Got Talent” spinoffs “AGT Champions” and “AGT Extreme.”

After several years in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers, Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles, where he painted portraits of teammates to supplement his income, Crews turned to performing arts. He will be starring in and executive producing a CBS comedy pilot based on the long-running comic strip JumpStart.

In October 2024, Rebecca Crews opened her flagship store in the Old Pasadena shopping district, following her December 2021 launch of a clothing, cosmetics, and accessories line at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. Her brand is a mix of classic and contemporary, suited for powerful and feminine women everywhere who want to look and feel their best.

The Crews are active philanthropists, supporting organizations including RISE US, Stand Up to Cancer, and The Worldwide Salvation Army. Rebecca is a regular contributor to various charities and organizations worldwide that feed the poor, serve women and children, and support families in need. They are particularly involved in advocacy against sex trafficking and sexual assault, having spoken at many events supporting victims of sex trafficking, sexual assault, so as to change the narrative around the issue, holding perpetrators accountable through legislation and awareness. The couple has five children and one grandchild.

“Rebecca and I are beyond excited to be a part of the 2025 Rose Parade!” said Terry Crews. “As longtime Pasadena residents, this iconic celebration holds a special place in our hearts. It’s an honor to be included in such a cherished tradition that brings creativity, joy, and community spirit to life. We can’t wait to celebrate alongside our neighbors and share the magic of Pasadena with millions around the world. Let’s make this year’s parade unforgettable!”

Jarrín, who served as the Dodgers’ Spanish-language broadcaster for 64 years, will be joined by his son Jorge, a former LA radio personality and Dodger broadcaster, and Jorge’s wife of 43 years, Maggie.

The Jarrín family has deep roots in the area, having lived in Pasadena, Altadena, and San Marino since 1962.

“We are thrilled to be joining Mayor Victor Gordo, along with his family to ring in 2025. Mayor Gordo is a friend and has been an outstanding Mayor and we are proud to make the ride down Colorado Boulevard with him,” states Jorge.

Though retired from broadcasting, the elder Jarrín maintains his position as the longest-serving Dodgers employee, having joined the organization in 1959. Jorge now leads the family’s nonprofit, the Jaime and Blanca Jarrín Foundation, which has awarded nearly $200,000 in scholarships to economically challenged youth.

Mayor Gordo said plans for the ride have been brewing for some time.

“For a couple of years now, Terry, Rebecca and I have talked about riding down Colorado Blvd. together and we will finally have that opportunity. Terry and Rebecca: here we go!” said Mayor Gordo. “Jaime Jarrín is a kind and humble friend and it will be an honor to have him, Jorge and Maggie ride with us. As a Spanish-speaking immigrant, I recall, vividly, listening to his eloquent and poetic call of Dodger games and beaming with pride. It is an honor to have these good friends join Kelly, Emma, Michael and me as we welcome 2025 in Pasadena on the Best Day Ever!”

The Rose Parade travels 5.5 miles down Colorado Boulevard and features four types of entries: floral-decorated floats entered by a participating corporation, nonprofit organization or municipality; equestrian units; bands; and Tournament entries.
