  • Inside Scarlett Johansson’s First Day as Jenna Bush Hager’s Guest Co-Host (Exclusive)

Scarlett Johansson is living the dream.

The actress is trying her hand at co-hosting television this week on Jenna & Friends, the fourth hour of the NBC morning staple with Jenna Bush Hager, and the fast friends (and even faster dynamic duo) took PEOPLE along for the ride on Jan. 21.

“It’s a complete dream. I was saying to Jenna earlier, it’s like that thing that I imagined as a 10-year-old: Some day I’m going to be on a daytime show and meet all of these amazing people,” Johansson tells PEOPLE exclusively as she and Bush Hager mingle after the show.

“I mean, it’s a testament to what you guys have all built here that I’ve literally walked down the street and have gotten more traction from guest hosting the Today show than any other project that I’ve done!” she says with a laugh.

The morning started with the hosting pair filming their cold open (in layman’s terms: the show’s intro) around 9:30 a.m. before they briefly parted ways for final touchups. Bush Hager, clad in a black sweater dress and a smile, retreats to her dressing room (which is, indeed, just as tiny as the anchors always joke).

The little room is stuffed with colorful shoes and coats and clothes and of course books, and Bush Hager is equally as funny and charming — chatting casually about the broach she wore on her jacket outside on the plaza earlier that morning — even when there aren’t a million cameras on her.

The in-house PA system then informs Bush Hager she’s got five minutes to air, so while she gets in the zone, everyone heads down to Studio 1A, where anchors Craig Melvin, Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer are wrapping their 3rd Hour,

Producers rib Melvin over his recent PEOPLE cover, asking if autographed copies are going to be his go-to Christmas gift next year, and Dreyer is wonderfully welcoming, complimenting haircuts and outfits as she goes.

The studio team quickly swoops in to change the set over for Bush Hager and Johansson, and Roker, meanwhile, is busy offering up barbecue pizza from the 3rd Hour’s earlier segment (reminder, it is barely 10 a.m. at this point) because that’s just how they roll, he says.

The set never stops moving, not once, over the next hour helmed by Bush Hager and Johansson. Today‘s fourth hour is a well-oiled machine — the result of numerous pros showing up to do their jobs (and reveling in the fun).

“It’s such a good vibe here. I’ve done obviously morning shows and whatever for years and years, publicizing projects I worked on and whatever, [but] it’s always so fun to come on this show,” says Johansson. “And the opportunity to be on this show for an hour and get to know more people at the show? It’s just awesome. It’s like, ‘Oh, yeah, we’re doing a fun thing. This is an upbeat thing.’”

And Johansson is a natural next to Bush Hager — no surprise after learning that hosting morning TV has been a longstanding dream for the actress.

“I told Al I’m coming after his job,” she tells PEOPLE. “You guys, [no] if I ever did weather for the week, it would be bad. ‘It looks cold,’ meanwhile, it’s the hottest weather they’ve ever had,” jokes Johansson.

Bush Hager, however, is quick to shower her guest in compliments.

“She’s so naturally curious. I know that from hanging with her. And she’s a good listener. And that’s part of how you do this job. So I knew she’d be good. Listen, she’s made us all cooler because we cultivated these shows with her in mind,” she says.

As the show wraps, the crew chants “Scar-lett! Scar-lett!” over and over again. The star is visibly flattered.

“They don’t do this on movie sets!” she quips.

The two then say their goodbyes (if only for the remainder of the day before Johansson returns for the following morning) and just like that, she’s off to her next engagement in a schedule that proves to be endlessly packed.

“I love her,” says Bush Hager. “And also, when something ends and you’re starting something new, to have people raise their hands and show up for you, it’s the most gracious, amazing feeling. Truthfully.”

Jenna & Friends airs weekdays at 10:00 a.m ET on NBC.

Inside Scarlett Johansson’s First Day as Jenna Bush Hager’s Guest Co-Host (Exclusive)

  • Reggie Bush identifies one change Lincoln Riley must make to fix USC

Things didn’t go USC football’s way in 2024. Despite thrilling victories over SEC opponents to begin and end the season, the Trojans underachieved massively. Reggie Bush thinks he knows why.

“One of the things that we didn’t see this year from the quarterback was that dual-threat component,” Bush said. “The quarterback has got to start running. I’m not saying the current guys can’t do it but they’ve got to start running because that opens up everything. That needs to be a message to the quarterback room. You guys aren’t just here to throw the football.”

Bush highlighted the dip in scoring production from Riley’s offenses, which are usually among the highest scoring in the country. After posting 41-point offenses in 2022 and 2023, the Trojans dipped to 30 points per game in 2024.

The questions around Miller Moss’s mobility followed USC into the season. Those concerns grew louder as the Trojans struggled in pass protection early in the season. Former UNLV quarterback Jayden Maiava ultimately took over the starting job in part because of his more dynamic skillset.

But even Maiava failed to utilize his legs as much as many Trojan fans — including Bush — would have wanted to see.

Designed runs for Maiava were few and far between. The fact that those rare runs were largely effective only made it more frustrating.

Maiava ran four times against Nebraska and Notre Dame. He carried the ball just twice against UCLA and Texas A&M. Not to compare Caleb Williams and Maiava in terms of rushing ability, but the former averaged eight carries per game in his two seasons with the Trojans.

Williams was willing to use his legs when he needed to and that made a difference for USC’s offense. Maiava needs to show that same kind of confidence in his running if he retains the starting job in 2025. Riley needs to show that same kind of confidence in letting his QB run in 2025 as well.

Bush spoke to FanSided on behalf of Modelo, the official beer sponsor of the College Football Playoff. At the start of the 2024 college football season, Reggie Bush and Modelo set out to recruit the ultimate group of dedicated fans to join “Team Modelo” and become “full-time fans.” Those fans have been chosen and will be at Monday night’s College Football Playoff National Championship Game in Atlanta. Before the game, those fans will sit down with Bush to give their “Fanfessionals” on the latest college football season.

Reggie Bush, former USC running back and Heisman Trophy winner, has identified one key change that new head coach Lincoln Riley must make in order to fix the struggling USC football program.

In a recent interview, Bush emphasized the importance of recruiting local talent to replenish the Trojans’ roster with top-tier players from Southern California. He pointed out that USC’s historical success was built on the backs of local stars, and that Riley must prioritize recruiting efforts in the region to bring back the glory days.

Bush highlighted the abundance of talent in the Los Angeles area and stressed the need for USC to lock down the best players in the state to compete at a national level. He believes that focusing on recruiting local talent will not only improve the team’s performance on the field, but also reinvigorate fan support and restore the program’s reputation.

With Lincoln Riley now at the helm, Reggie Bush’s advice could prove to be the key to turning around USC’s fortunes and bringing the Trojans back to national prominence. Only time will tell if Riley heeds Bush’s words and makes the necessary changes to fix USC.

  • Jenna Bush Hager Credits Grandma Barbara Bush for ‘Sexy’ Love of Books (Exclusive)

Jenna Bush Hager is booked (and busy).

The Today media maven spends every weekday hosting the fourth hour of the NBC morning show — newly named Jenna & Friends — and she also pops into the earlier hours to deliver the “Morning Boost.” (Bush Hager received the “Boost” baton from Hoda Kotb on the anchor’s last day at Today in an effort to keep Kotb’s longstanding tradition of good vibes going.)

Now, Bush Hager is even busier. The host, whose popular book club Read with Jenna has helped propel 47 titles to the New York Times best seller list, is launching her own publishing imprint.

Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager pose with the “Morning Boost Baton” Hoda’s last day, Jan 10.

    Nathan Congleton/NBC

Bush Hager tells PEOPLE that she began tossing around the idea for the imprint, Thousand Voices Books, six months ago — “and here we are!”

“Because I’m so into it, it doesn’t really feel like work,” she says. “I mean, it is, but I’m just having such a great time.”

Thousand Voices Books will be part of the Random House Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House LLC, and will serve as an expansion of Bush Hager’s media company Thousand Voices. The imprint will publish six titles in 2025, the first of which is called Conform by Ariel Sullivan.

“Somebody had told me, ‘You don’t need to start an imprint. These are the reasons why it doesn’t work.’ And the truth is, all of the reasons why traditional, for lack of a better word, celebrity or influencer-led imprints don’t work, we have sort of a solve for,” Bush Hager says, citing the fact that she’s established herself as a trusted voice in the literary world already, and she has a built-in platform to help champion her choices.

A throwback photo Jenna Bush Hager (R) shared featuring her two children Mila (center) and Poppy, sister Barbara and grandmother Barbara in.
    Jenna Bush Hager/Instagram

She’s also been a book worm from the beginning and can trace her love of literature back through her family tree.

“Both of my grandmothers, whom [sister Barbara and I] were named after, there was a certain importance that they had in our lives, and they were huge readers. I mean, my grandmother, Barbara Bush, had a sewn, needle-pointed pillow on her couch that said, ‘Reading is sexy.’ Which I’ve remade and put on my couch,” she says with a laugh.

Bush Hager’s mom, former first lady Laura Bush, was a librarian, and so were both grandmothers: Laura’s mother, Jenna Welch, and the former first lady. When Barbara’s husband George H. W. Bush became Vice President in 1981, she focused her special cause on literacy. She later started the nonprofit the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, which advocates for helping parents and their children learn the basic educational skills of reading and writing.

“I remember, probably right when I could read myself, I was in maybe second or third grade, and my grandmother Barbara was visiting, and she was the first lady [then], and she’d actually brought us her dog’s puppy. Her grandpuppy. And I was reading a book that she had recommended on her arrival called A Dog Called Kitty. And it’s kind of in the same vein as Where the Red Fern Grows. It’s this really sad, sweet story of a dog named Kitty who has a friend, spoiler alert, and the dog passes away at the end,” Bush Hager recalls.

“I was bawling crying, being driven around with her, and she was like, ‘Somebody’s going to think I’m hitting you! Don’t cry so hard!’ But I think I realized, well, [this experience] was with her, and I couldn’t put the book down. And I think I realized the power that books have to make us feel,” she says.

    NBC

As Bush Hager begins her new imprint, she’s also embarking on a new era of Jenna & Friends. After Kotb’s departure on Jan. 10, the show is having a rotation of A-list stars step in as host.

This week, Taraji P. Henson and Eva Longoria were on-hand and Bush Hager couldn’t have been more appreciative for their help amid the devastating fires in Los Angeles.

“I honestly am so grateful that Taraji and Eva came,” she says. “I mean, they are going through [this]— they live in L.A. and their hearts are broken — and yet they showed up for me.”

One thing Bush Hager does during trouble times, is read.

“When we’re witnessing these horrific fires and people’s livelihoods and lives and everything that they own being burned and it’s this horrific moment in our history, this book I read — that I can’t tell you about yet — brought so much hope to me.”

“So I just think [books] do have this singular power, she concluded, “that is something I want to be part of.”

Jenna Bush Hager Credits Grandma Barbara Bush for ‘Sexy’ Love of Books (Exclusive)

In a recent interview, Jenna Bush Hager opened up about her deep love for books and how her grandmother, former First Lady Barbara Bush, played a significant role in instilling that passion in her.

“Grandma always made reading seem so sexy,” Hager said. “She had this incredible way of making books come alive and sparking a curiosity in me that has stayed with me to this day.”

Hager, who is a bestselling author and co-host of the Today show, credits her grandmother for not only introducing her to the joy of reading but also for teaching her the importance of education and self-improvement.

“She always encouraged me to explore different genres and authors, and to never stop learning,” Hager shared. “I am forever grateful for the gift of books that she gave me.”

Barbara Bush was known for her love of literature and was a strong advocate for literacy throughout her life. Hager continues to honor her grandmother’s legacy by promoting reading and education in her own work.

As Hager reflects on her grandmother’s influence, she hopes to pass on the love of books to her own children and inspire others to discover the magic of reading.

“Books have the power to transport us to different worlds, to challenge our perspectives, and to connect us with others,” Hager said. “I owe so much to my grandmother for showing me the beauty and power of words.”

It is clear that Barbara Bush’s legacy lives on in her granddaughter, Jenna Bush Hager, as she continues to share her passion for books with the world.

  • Former Presidents Obama, Clinton and Bush won’t attend Trump’s inaugural lunch

Former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush will not attend President-elect Donald Trump’s traditional inaugural lunch.

Obama received an invitation but declined to attend, according to a source familiar with the matter. Clinton also was invited but does not plan to attend, according to a second source familiar with the matter, while Bush’s office said it was not tracking an invitation to the luncheon.

Former Secretary of State and first lady Hillary Clinton also received an invitation to the inaugural luncheon but will not attend, according to a third source familiar with the matter.

A spokesperson for Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the absences.

All three former presidents, however, will attend Trump’s swearing-in ceremony earlier in the day, according to their teams. The former first ladies will also attend the swearing-in ceremony except for Michelle Obama, according to the Obamas’ office. No reason was provided. Michelle Obama also did not attend the funeral service last week for former President Jimmy Carter, making hers the only absence among all living current and former presidents and first ladies.

Inauguration Day is one of the only occasions when all former living presidents usually congregate to usher in the next administration. Trump, however, declined to attend President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021.

None of the living former presidents supported Trump’s candidacy. Bush did not make an endorsement, and Obama and Clinton actively campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris.

The Clintons attended the luncheon in 2017 after Trump defeated Hillary Clinton. During the luncheon, he encouraged a standing ovation for her.

“I was very honored, very, very honored when I heard that President Bill Clinton and Secretary Hillary Clinton was coming today,” Trump said at the time.

The inaugural luncheon tradition stems from a lunch the Senate Committee on Arrangements hosted in 1897 for President William McKinley and guests at the Capitol, according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC), which hosts the luncheon.

In 1953, the JCCIC began hosting the luncheon for the incoming president and vice president and their guests. Politicians typically deliver speeches and toast the new administration.

Former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush have announced that they will not be attending President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural lunch on January 20th. This decision breaks with tradition, as past presidents have typically attended the lunch to show support for the peaceful transfer of power.

The decision not to attend the lunch comes amid heightened tensions between Trump and the former presidents. Trump has been critical of Obama and Clinton during the campaign, and Bush has reportedly expressed concerns about Trump’s leadership style.

While it is not uncommon for former presidents to skip the inaugural lunch, the absence of three former presidents is certainly notable. It remains to be seen how Trump will respond to their decision, and how it will impact the tone of the inauguration day festivities.

Reggie Bush sounds off on NIL, college football landscape: ‘NIL is not the fix’

PASADENA, Calif. — At the end of a year in which his Heisman Trophy was returned, while celebrating his induction into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, legendary USC running back Reggie Bush spoke at length Tuesday on the current state of college sports and the challenges current players face navigating Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals and the transfer portal.

Bush, 39, called for college football players to unionize.

“NIL is not the fix,” Bush said, speaking to a group of reporters at the University Club of Pasadena. “I hate that NIL has become the thing people look to and say, ‘Now everything is good. Now the kids have everything they need and they’re good and making millions of dollars. That’s not true.

“The top one percent in college football is making money. That’s it. It’s usually a quarterback or someone like Travis Hunter. Other than that, everybody else is still working to get there, to get to that next level. To get some kind of money. … I think at some point the players need to unionize so they can collectively bargain. And so they can start to get into a more fair workplace for everybody.”

Bush relinquished his 2005 Heisman after a NCAA investigation into USC found alleged recruiting violations involving then-impermissible benefits allegedly given to Bush and his family. Bush denies those claims and filed a lawsuit for his reinstatement into the NCAA in 2023 after entering the College Football Hall of Fame.

The Heisman Trust — a separate institution from the NCAA — reinstated Bush’s trophy in April as college sports continues to evolve and payments to college athletes become more and more commonplace.

“I was broke in college,” Bush said. “We had nothing. We had no money, we had nothing. We were eating Top Ramen, Malt-O-Meal … But also, the thing about that time period we as we knew this wasn’t that final stop. We knew this was a stepping stone for us to get to that next place. That’s still what college football is, but I think there needs to be more direction. There needs to be more protection for the players as well.”

Bush, who expressed a desire to be a head coach someday at the collegiate level, said he believes a college player’s union would help players learn about and earn their worth in the NIL marketplace, and navigate the complexities of the transfer portal before and after entering. In an age where social media and branding has a heavy influence on college athletes’ decisions, Bush said too much of the burden has fallen on the athletes to figure everything out on their own, and he believes they need more guidance.

“When you talk about the transfer portal, you hear about the great stories,” Bush said. “But you don’t hear about the other side of kids who go in the transfer portal and don’t make it out, or kids who go in the transfer portal thinking they’re going to a better situation, but that situation doesn’t end up being there for him. You’re having to make really, really big decisions as an 18- and 19-year-old kid, and these are decisions that can affect the rest of your life and your career.”

Bush was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame alongside former Oregon running back LaMichael James and longtime Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio.

Reggie Bush, former college football star and Heisman Trophy winner, recently shared his thoughts on the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) legislation that has been shaking up the college football landscape. In an interview, Bush expressed his concerns about the impact of NIL on student-athletes and the future of college sports.

According to Bush, while NIL offers student-athletes the opportunity to profit off their own name and brand, it is not the ultimate solution to the issues facing college athletes. He believes that the focus should be on providing fair compensation and support for student-athletes, rather than relying solely on NIL deals.

Bush also raised concerns about the growing disparity between powerhouse programs and smaller schools in college football, noting that NIL could exacerbate this divide. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a level playing field for all student-athletes, regardless of the size or prestige of their program.

Overall, Bush’s comments shed light on the complexities and challenges of the current college football landscape. As the debate around NIL continues to evolve, it is clear that there are no easy answers or quick fixes. It will be interesting to see how the NCAA and college sports community navigate these issues in the coming years.
