  • FRIDAY NIGHT DOG FIGHT: Butler Bulldogs Visit Georgetown Hoyas

Your Georgetown Hoyas (13-8, 4-6 BE) are set to host the Butler Bulldogs this Friday at Capital One Arena, in a game that feels like a crucial moment for each program looking to stay out of the conference basement. The Hoyas, fresh off a brutal loss to St. John’s, are desperate to right the ship, while the Bulldogs limp into D.C. looking to avoid a total collapse of what once seemed like a promising season. The tip-off is at 6:30 PM on FS1 – a game that will be critical for both teams as they try to turn things around.

The Butler Bulldogs are a perplexing team. Their overall record is 9-12, and they are just 2-8 in Big East play. They started the season strong at 7-1, showing they have talent, with wins over SMU, Northwestern, and Mississippi State. But then things went sideways.

After Butler’s loss to Marquette in December, they suffered a nine-game losing streak. They’ve had a couple of wins since then, beating Seton Hall and DePaul at home, but their recent performance suggests they’re in a fragile state. They were recently defeated by Marquette 78-69, a game in which they shot a blistering 57% in the first half before collapsing in the second half, shooting just 26%.

Key players for the Bulldogs include Jahmyl Telfort, the fifth-year player, who is their offensive engine, averaging 15.8 points per game, and their primary playmaker with 3.4 assists per game. He’s coming off a 24-point performance against Marquette where he hit all 11 of his free throws.

Andre Screen is their top rebounder, averaging 5.9 boards per game. Pierre Brooks II, Patrick McCaffery, and Finley Bizjack also play important roles. The Bulldogs offense can be very effective, as they demonstrated in the first half against Marquette, but that was quickly undone when their shooting percentage plummeted.

The Hoyas, on the other hand, are reeling from a brutal 66-41 loss to St. John’s. The numbers are stark: they shot an abysmal 24.6% from the field, and they were outscored 47-21 in the first half. Malik Mack was the only player to reach double figures, with 13 points, but his second-half turnovers were disastrous. This game is a crucial test of their resilience and should show that the home loss to DePaul was a fluke.

Georgetown should be able to put Butler away with their usual one half of really solid defense—let’s hope it’s the second period.

Still, the Hoyas cannot afford to let Butler get comfortable. Butler’s offense is capable of catching fire, as seen in the first half against Marquette, where they posted an effective field goal percentage of 66.1%. The Hoyas must play with a high level of intensity and disrupt the Bulldogs’ offensive rhythm from the start. In their loss to St. John’s, the Hoyas allowed the Red Storm to shoot 48.3% from the field.

The Hoyas offense has to be much better. Their 24.6% shooting performance against St. John’s is simply unacceptable. They can’t rely on just one player to carry the scoring load. They need to get more players involved and create higher quality looks at the basket. They need to use the passing game to get open shots, since the Hoyas’ assist rate of 54.4% is just 112th in the nation.

Both teams will need to crash the boards, but Georgetown needs to limit Butler’s second chance opportunities by securing rebounds on the defensive end. While Butler had a 35-30 rebounding advantage against Marquette, Thomas Sorber had 9 rebounds for the Hoyas against St. John’s. Limiting second chance opportunities for Butler will be crucial for Georgetown.

Both teams must protect the ball, since both teams are prone to turnovers. In the game against St. John’s, Georgetown had 16 turnovers. Butler had 12 turnovers in their recent game with Marquette, while Marquette only had five. Georgetown needs to value each possession and minimize unforced errors.

The Georgetown bench has to step up and provide more consistent minutes. They need to contribute on the boards and on the defensive end. In the loss to St. John’s, no bench players reached double figures, and that cannot happen against Butler.

This game isn’t just another mark in the win-loss column for either team. For Georgetown, it’s an opportunity to show they can bounce back from a humiliating dismantling. For Butler, it’s a chance to prove they can recapture their early-season form.

However, the onus is on Georgetown to perform at home and protect their court. The Hoyas are 4-6 in conference play, and they need a win to start turning things around. Beating teams in the bottom half will still require more defensive intensity, improved shot selection, and minimized turnovers.

Georgetown Hosts Butler in Friday Night Contest | Georgetown University Athletics

In its most recent outing, Butler (9-12, 2-8 BE) fell to No.9 Marquette 78-69 on Tuesday evening at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Jahmyl Telfort led a duo of Bulldogs in double figures with 24 points followed by Patrick McCaffery (12). Andre Screen led the Bulldogs on the glass pulling down nine boards followed by Pierre Brooks II who had eight to his credit. Telfort paced the offense with five assists in the contest.

Butler shot 40.7% (24-59) from the field, while shooting 27.3% (6-22) from behind the arc.

Telfort leads a trio of Bulldogs averaging double figures posting 16.2 ppg, followed by Brooks (14.9 ppg) and McCaffery (12.2 ppg).

Screen leads Butler on the glass grabbing 6.0 rpg, followed by Brooks (5.3 rpg)

Jahmyl Telfort led the Bulldogs with a game-high 24 points Tuesday night against Marquette. Telfort made all 11 of his free throw attempts in the game.

Telfort is averaging 22.3 points per game over Butler’s three most recent outings.

Telfort has led the Bulldogs in scoring in 10 games this season and has posted 20 or more points eight times.

Butler led Marquette, 42-35, at the half after shooting 57 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes. Marquette’s defense limited Butler to 26-percent shooting in the second half in taking the win. Butler has led at the half in six of the team’s 10 BIG EAST games.

Butler held a 35-30 rebounding edge against Marquette Tuesday; the Bulldogs are now 7-4 when out-rebounding its opponent.

Andre Screen led Butler with nine rebounds Tuesday; it marked his tenth game this season with eight or more rebounds. Screen’s average of 6.0 rebounds per game leads Butler, but his average increases to 8.7 per game over the team’s most recent three games.

Screen is shooting 84 percent from the field over his last four games (21-for-25).

Pierre Brooks II led the Bulldogs with career-highs of both 29 points and 13 rebounds in Saturday’s win over DePaul. It was his second double-double of the season and the third of his career.

Over the course of this season, Hoya HC Ed Cooley has seen several of his players lead the squad in scoring. At this juncture, freshman pivot Thomas Sorber has returned to that perch, dropping 14.8 ppg, good for 12th in the league. Sorber also paces GU and the league with 9.1 rebounds secured, each time out.

Three teammates join Sorber on the BIG EAST’s Top 30 scorer listing: Grad wing Micah Peavy’s 14.6 ppg/14th mark, sophomore guard Malik Mack drops 13 ppg placing him 18th in the conference, plus junior guard Jayden Epps trailing ever so slightly at 12.9 ppg/19th.

Butler, coached by Thad Matta, gets 15.8 ppg from grad forward Jahmyl Telfort, landing him ninth in the league. Senior forward Pierre Brooks is next at 15.2 ppg/11th, while senior wing Patrick McCaffery follows with 12.2 ppg/23rd work.

Game Preview – Georgetown vs. Butler | Houseenterprise

Georgetown came out with no energy on Tuesday, and now heads into a Friday night matchup with a desperate Butler team that is much better than its record will show.

While the Hoyas were getting run out of their own gym on Tuesday, Butler was taking #9 Marquette to the brink, leading the Golden Eagles at one point by ten before Shaka Smart’s team came back in the second half to win by nine.

For Georgetown to get back to its winning ways, and maybe crack 70 points for the first time this calendar year, they’ll need to get into a much better offensive rhythm early in the game.

Ed Cooley has one of the younger teams in the country and sometimes they are playing like it; Georgetown ranks 289th in Division I basketball in turnovers, meaning there are 288 teams that are better at taking care of the basketball than them. Given the youth on the roster, maybe we shouldn’t be surprised.

Big East Game Preview: at Butler Bulldogs | Anonymous Eagle

No one particularly ran wild for Butler in the first meeting, as Jahmyl Telfort and Kolby King tied for the scoring high with 16 points on eight and 10 shots respectively. Combined, Butler shot 15-for-25 on two-pointers and generally speaking, allowing someone to hit 60% of their twos against you is a bad time. That gets even worse when a team shoots over 40% from behind the three-point line against you, and that’s what Butler did. Again: No one got crazy hot, but a bunch of guys going 2-for-4 and 2-for-5 adds up pretty quick.

The question then becomes whether or not [an opponent] can do a better job defending Butler to make their life easier on the offensive end. A couple fewer made buckets, and that’s a couple fewer offensive rebounds or steals that [an opponent] needs to stay out in front of the Bulldogs. Yes, I know, [an opponent] wants to get those turnovers, especially the live ball steals that turn into easy buckets on the other end. But sometimes you have to win without them, and the fastest way to do that is to get some old fashioned missed shots and a rebound to end the possession.

Struggling Butler hopes trip to Georgetown sparks turnaround | FLM

“There comes a point where you’re struggling to score and especially when you’re playing a team like Marquette it starts to weigh on your defense,” Matta said.

“It starts to wear you down defensively. As a coach you don’t want that to happen.”

If there’s a team that knows all too well about struggling to score, it’s Georgetown.

The Hoyas (13-8, 4-6) have lost six of seven and scored their fewest points in a game since the 2012-13 season in Tuesday’s 66-41 loss to No. 15 St. John’s.

Georgetown is coming off a rough outing against St. John’s, but its previous five conference losses came by 10 points or fewer. The Hoyas also picked up an upset win over Villanova on Jan. 20, taking down the Wildcats as 7.5-point road underdogs. Senior guard Micah Peavy had 24 points on 9 of 16 shooting, including a 6 of 9 mark from 3-point range.

Standout freshman forward Thomas Sorber had a double-double in that game, finishing with 15 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Sophomore guard Malik Mack had a team-high 13 points in the loss to St. John’s on Tuesday, knocking down 3 of 5 attempts from the perimeter. Butler is 2-11 in its last 13 games and is riding a five-game road losing streak.

The Butler Bulldogs are set to face off against the Georgetown Hoyas in a Friday night showdown that promises to be a thrilling dog fight on the court.

Both teams are coming off strong performances in their recent games and will be looking to continue their winning streaks. The Bulldogs have been led by their star player, who has been dominating the court with his scoring and defensive prowess. Meanwhile, the Hoyas have shown great teamwork and determination in their games, with multiple players stepping up to make big plays when it counts.

This game is sure to be a battle of wills as both teams fight for the win and bragging rights. So grab your popcorn, settle in, and get ready for a Friday night dog fight between the Butler Bulldogs and the Georgetown Hoyas. It’s going to be a game you won’t want to miss!

My Butler vs Georgetown College Basketball Betting Preview

While I’ve seen improvements from Butler and Georgetown this year, the two are still a combined 6-14 in Big East play.

Butler’s offense relies on wing creation from the versatile Jahmyl Telfort-Patrick McCaffery-Pierre Brooks II trio. Those three are solid in catch-and-shoot creation, good as ball-screen creators and even better at generating free throws.

I’m not entirely sure how they match up with Georgetown’s defense.

The Hoyas have an elite interior defense behind stud big man Thomas Sorber. They cover ball screens well and are excellent at defending the rim without fouling. Plus, they have plenty of wing length to cover the Bulldogs’ wing creation.

That said, they’re a little too compact, so I could see Butler beating them over the top, especially when Ed Cooley mixes in his zone defense, as the Bulldogs are a rock-solid zone offense (1.01 PPP, 61st percentile, per Synergy).

Ultimately, Georgetown prioritizes defending the rim, while Butler creates almost nothing at the rim.

On the other end of the court, the Hoyas are an interior-oriented, rim-running and glass-crashing offense behind Sorber, an elite roll man and flex cutter.

Butler runs a drop-coverage defense that funnels dribble creation. But the Bulldogs aren’t great defensively because their wings are flat-footed and can’t stay in front of the dribble.

That said, Georgetown relies more on secondary creation and is relatively uncomfortable with on-ball dribble penetration, which makes the Hoyas uncomfortable against drop coverage. The mercurial Jayden Epps is the only guy who can create against those sets.

Ultimately, I don’t have an excellent feel for this matchup.

If I had to pick a side, I’d lean toward Butler, as the Bulldogs could beat Georgetown over the top, while I doubt Georgetown can adjust its typical offense.

But this is a high-variance game dependent on whether or not Butler can hit those shots.

  • Butler vs Georgetown Prediction, Odds and Picks

The Butler Bulldogs (9-12) hung around with Marquette for a majority of the night on Tuesday, taking a 7-point lead into halftime before it evaporated a few minutes into the second half. On the heels of yet another tough conference loss, the Bulldogs will fly to the nation’s capital on a quick turnaround to play the Georgetown Hoyas (13-8) – who have lost 6 of their last 7 games. Up until the consecutive losses to Providence and St. John’s, the Hoyas have been fairly competitive in conference play. They have wins over a surging Xavier team and Villanova, and I can forgive the loss to DePaul because Jayden Epps and Thomas Sorber did not play.

Georgetown’s loss to St. John’s on Tuesday was ugly. The Hoyas never held a lead and trailed by as many as 30 points late in the first half. Luckily for Georgetown, Butler is nowhere near the level of St. John’s defensively. The Bulldogs are 9th in the Big East in adjusted defensive efficiency and effective field goal percentage (KenPom), and they force turnovers as the 2nd-lowest rate in the league – music to Georgetown’s ears given its struggles with turnovers. Moreover, outside of Andre Screen, Butler has virtually no rim protection in the back court – which figures to be an issue against Sorber in the paint. Sober has one of the highest usage rates in the Big East and is very good at getting his shots at and around the rim, even extending out to the mid-range. He is also one of the best offensive rebounders in the country and has what I would consider a plus-matchup against a Butler team that is 221st in offensive rebounds allowed this season. Butler also struggles to defend off the bounce, and Malik Mack should be able to take advantage of this. Mack has the ability to attack his defenders off the dribble, which typically sets Georgetown up with a good shot – whether Mack finishes at the rim or dishes it to Sorber for an easy lay-in.

Defensively, I like what Georgetown presents in this matchup. Sorber is one of the nation’s leading shot-blockers, so he figures to alter plenty of Butler’s close-range shots. Butler will likely settle for jump shots in the mid-range and from the perimeter throughout this game, but I believe Georgetown is well-equipped to close-out and contest on these shots with its rotation of solid perimeter defenders like Epps and Micah Peavy. Despite losing 6 of its last 7, Georgetown is 2nd in the Big East in effective field goal percentage allowed, with top 4 marks in defensive efficiency, turnover rate and block rate. The Hoyas defensive pressure also forces their opponents into the highest non-steal turnover rate in the league, which measures non-steal giveaways like passes out of bounds or stepping on the baseline. With perceived advantages on both sides of the floor, as well as a travel advantage having played at home on Tuesday, I like Georgetown to win by margin at home against Butler on Friday night.

In this highly anticipated matchup, the Butler Bulldogs will take on the Georgetown Hoyas in an exciting college basketball showdown. Both teams have had their fair share of successes this season and will be looking to secure a crucial win in this game.

Butler comes into this game with a record of 15-9 and has been playing some solid basketball as of late. Led by standout guard Aaron Thompson, the Bulldogs have shown that they can compete with some of the best teams in the country. On the other hand, Georgetown has had a bit of a rough season, with a record of 7-14. However, the Hoyas have shown flashes of brilliance and have the potential to pull off an upset in this game.

When it comes to the odds, Butler is currently favored to win this game. The Bulldogs have been playing well and have the talent to come out on top in this matchup. However, Georgetown should not be counted out, as they have shown that they can compete with top teams in the past.

In terms of picks, I believe that Butler will come out on top in this game. They have been playing well and have the experience and talent to secure a win over Georgetown. Look for Aaron Thompson to have a big game and lead the Bulldogs to victory.

  • College Basketball Picks for Yale vs Princeton, Butler vs Georgetown

As college basketball bettors gear up for an exciting Friday slate, two early games stand out for the profitable betting opportunities they present.

Our PRO Projections, which capitalize on proprietary betting data to uncover edges in the market, have highlighted significant advantages for today’s games. Specifically, our experts have identified the Yale vs. Princeton and Georgetown vs. Butler games as top selections, with a couple of sharp picks against the spread.

Let’s delve into the insights provided by our data and explain why these college basketball predictions may be worth your attention.

College Basketball Odds: Sharp Picks for 1/31

    Yale vs. Princeton Pick

We have Yale squaring off against Princeton at 5 p.m. ET to tip off today’s action, and according to expert PRO Projections, this is one of the most promising games in terms of betting value.

The current line sits at Yale -3, yet our analysis suggests a fair line closer

    Yale vs Princeton:

In this Ivy League matchup, Yale comes into the game with a 10-4 record while Princeton sits at 6-8. Yale has been playing well as of late, winning four of their last five games. Princeton, on the other hand, has struggled to find consistency this season.

I’m picking Yale to come out on top in this game. They have a more balanced team and have been playing better overall. Look for guard Azar Swain to have a big game for the Bulldogs.

    Butler vs Georgetown:

Butler and Georgetown are both sitting at .500 records, with Butler at 10-10 and Georgetown at 9-9. Both teams have had their ups and downs this season, but Butler is coming off a big win against Marquette while Georgetown is on a three-game losing streak.

I’m going with Butler in this game. They have a more experienced team and have shown the ability to win close games. Look for guard Chuck Harris to lead the Bulldogs to victory in this Big East showdown.

  • “They’re Going To Marbury You” – Carmelo Anthony Was Brutally Honest While Breaking Down The Jimmy Butler Trade Saga

    Michael Reaves. Getty Images.

With the NBA trade deadline quickly approaching (Feb 6th), it’s only a matter of time before we finally have a resolution one way or another to the Jimmy Butler saga. Deadlines spur action, so my guess is Shams already has the tweet written in his drafts and is just waiting on the confirmation before he sits sent on the tweet.

As outsiders, all we can do is look at this situation through what’s being leaked to us from the team side and the player side. That can be tricky of course because when that happens you need to remember that you’re basically being given propaganda. The team is going to do what they can to make Jimmy look bad, and in return, Jimmy’s camp is going to do the same thing about Pat Riley and the franchise. It’s all an attempt to put pressure on one another while also winning the battle in the court of public opinion.

It’s all posturing and agenda-pushing, much like it is with all of these types of trade demands. Remember the James Harden saga? Or the Ben Simmons saga? Or the Dame saga? There’s a reason these breakups are almost always nasty.

That’s why I found Carmelo Anthony’s perspective on this situation pretty interesting. For all the annoying former player podcasts that may be out there that do nothing but say stupid shit in hopes of going viral, that’s never really been the case with Melo’s. In fact, I’d argue it’s actually one of the best listens we have if you’re looking for a player perspective. If there’s anyone who is qualified to weigh in on Bulter’s situation and all the different aspects that go along with it, it’s probably Melo. He’s a guy who has been there before, and while he didn’t exactly burn everything to the ground like Jimmy Butler tends to do, he did find himself in similar situations throughout this career

Is it a coincidence that we’re now also getting leaks that Steph/Kerr don’t love the idea of adding Jimmy Butler to that team and that locker room? They are a team that desperately needs help for Steph, and even they are like “ehhhhhhhhh we’re OK”. To me, that’s partially what Melo is talking about. The way he’s acting, teams aren’t going to give a shit about the basketball side, which also has it’s own set of issues as he continues to age. At some point organizations are going to collectively decide you are not worth the trouble.

His point about being “Marbury’d” should not be overlooked. We’ve seen how the league operates in cases like this. Teams simply remove you from the equation and exile you to overseas basketball. It wasn’t a situation where Marbury wasn’t an effective basketball player, it was everything else that came with it to where teams got to the point where they weren’t willing to put up with the bullshit.

You can start to feel that happening with Butler. The Heat are telling him to stay away, other teams that could probably use his skillset are reluctant to bring him in. Given his age and price, who knows what the future looks like for Jimmy Butler after he picks up his final player option? Unless whoever trades for him immediately gives him an extension, is it so crazy to think that few teams if any will be blowing up his phone after his player option season next year? I don’t think you can rule out a scenario where this tweet becomes a reality

In the end, I still think the Heat find a partner in these next few days. Despite all the drama and the bullshit that comes with bringing Jimmy Butler in, when guys want to be traded, they tend to be traded no matter how much they tank their value. James Harden got fat as shit and flat out quit during games and he got what he wanted. Ben Simmons simply refused to play altogether, and he got what he wanted.

But if I were Jimmy Butler, I’d probably listen to Melo on this one. He’s been there before, he’s gone through it, and honestly, he gave probably the best take on this entire situation. Sort of reminds me of another issue Melo was right on the nose about

In a recent interview, Carmelo Anthony didn’t hold back when discussing the Jimmy Butler trade saga. He warned that if you’re not careful, they’re going to Marbury you – a reference to former NBA player Stephon Marbury, whose career was marred by controversy and drama.

Anthony spoke candidly about the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding Butler’s trade request and eventual move to the Miami Heat. He emphasized the importance of staying focused and keeping a level head in the midst of trade rumors and off-court distractions.

As a veteran player who has experienced his fair share of trade rumors and drama in the NBA, Anthony’s words carry weight. He knows firsthand the toll that off-court distractions can take on a player’s performance and mental well-being.

So, for any players caught up in trade rumors or drama, heed Carmelo Anthony’s warning: stay focused, stay grounded, and don’t let them Marbury you. It’s a lesson that could make all the difference in a player’s career.

  • Examining Potential Trade Destinations For Jimmy Butler

With just over a week remaining until the 2025 NBA trade deadline, the Jimmy Butler saga continues on reaching new daily levels of drama. At this point, the Miami Heat are ready to officially move on from Butler, which includes active ongoing trade negotiations with a handful of teams.

Will Butler get his way ending up at his preferred destination in the Phoenix Suns? As it currently stands, Phoenix remains aggressive in their pursuit of Butler before the deadline on February 6th. However, the main issue facing Phoenix from pulling this blockbuster deal off is sending Bradley Beal elsewhere to a team that would take on his contract, plus a destination he would sign off on thanks to a full no-trade clause.

With the Suns constantly running into a wall with negotiations, no team is openly pining to acquire Beal, other teams who previously believed they were out of negotiations are calling back Miami.

There will soon be closure, but in the meantime let’s dive into the most realistic teams left in the Butler derby.

    Phoenix Suns

Simply put, the maze is beginning to close in on the Suns as it relates to pathways to acquire Butler. Not only is the Beal dynamic looming large here, but also the Suns’ lack of overall assets to work with as a whole.

Beal’s contract is viewed as the most untradable in the NBA, and Phoenix’s recent trade with the Utah Jazz sending out their unprotected 2031 first-round selection for three protected picks in 2025, 2027 and 2029 was supposed to help with flexibility.

Just how few scenarios remain for the Suns, as it relates to acquiring Butler? It’s reaching life support, and they might need to get involved in the latest situation developing between De’Aaron Fox and the Sacramento Kings.

Any blockbuster that lands Butler in Phoenix will require at least a four or five-team framework in order to cross the finish line, so let’s construct what might be the best potential scenario remaining for them:

Suns — Jimmy Butler, Colby Jones

Heat — Harrison Barnes, Tre Jones, Trey Lyles, 2025 1st (via Suns)

Spurs — De’Aaron Fox, Kevin Huerter

    Kings — Bradley Beal, Keldon Johnson, 2025 1st (via Hawks), 2025 1st (via Spurs), 2027 1st (via Hawks), 2027 1st (via Suns), 2029 1st (via Suns), re-send 2031 swap rights back

Yes, you read that framework correctly after your jaw dropped a little bit. A massive, four team deal involving Butler, Fox and Beal in new destinations — and the price for all sides actually makes some sense. For Sacramento, it might take a lot of extra convincing to absorb Beal’s contract, but remember, the Kings held exploratory trade talks for Beal in 2023 before the Washington Wizards traded him to the Suns.

Two years later, the fit certainly isn’t stronger as it relates to Beal as a replacement for Fox. However, could the Suns and Spurs overwhelm Sacramento with picks to the point they say yes?

Truly, this feels like the only realistic scenario left in play for the Suns unless owner Mat Ishbia pulls off a miracle between now and February 6.

    Golden State Warriors

Originally a member of Butler’s preferred list of teams to be traded to alongside the Suns, the Warriors can also make a compelling offer to Miami.

In a package that would be primarily built around Andrew Wiggins, filler salaries and draft capital, would it be enough to sweeten the pot for the Heat to accept? Depending upon the other offers on the table, especially from Phoenix, it could actually win out in the end.

Butler’s malcontent behavior has significantly dampened his value, especially on an expiring contract.

Here’s a potential framework that is cap compliant for a simple two-team deal involving the Warriors and Heat:

Warriors — Jimmy Butler, Josh Richardson, Alec Burks

Heat — Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schroder, Kyle Anderson, Gui Santos, 2025 1st

Is this package the most compelling offer to Miami? Likely not, but this is the type of value they’re looking at receiving, unless he ends up in Phoenix with draft capital coming back their way.

Would Butler save the Warriors, who have been in a prolonged slide for a few months? Maybe not, but it’s a flyer worthy to take in order to give Stephen Curry a real chance to compete once more for a championship.

Butler, Curry and Draymond Green playing together in Golden State sounds like some on-court theater that might just work out beautifully in the end.

    Memphis Grizzlies

Anywhere but Memphis. That’s the indication from Butler’s camp as it relates to a potential deal sending him there.

The reason why Butler is so hesitant? Memphis won’t give him the new long-term contract he’s seeking; a source familiar told me earlier this week.

Like the Warriors, Memphis can quickly create a trade offer that doesn’t need to include any facilitating teams to help out. As Miami seeks a package of win-now players and draft capital for Butler, Memphis is one of the best bets of checking most of their required boxes.

The Grizzlies are right near the top of the Western Conference standings, and they could become a terrifying title threat with Butler brought aboard alongside Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane, and Zach Edey.

Who would be able to stop that starting five for Memphis? Good luck to anyone, and that’s why the Grizzlies might be willing to roll the dice here.

Right now, the Oklahoma City Thunder are the prohibitive favorites to win the West. However, if Memphis pulled off a Butler trade, they equally go toe-to-toe with the Thunder from there.

Grizzlies — Jimmy Butler, Josh Richardson, Alec Burks

Heat — Marcus Smart, Brandon Clarke, Luke Kennard, John Konchar, first-round pick

Right away, Smart and Clarke would slot into Miami’s rotation. Again, not a return package that will blow away the Heat, but at this point it will have to be what they settle for within the next week.

    Milwaukee Bucks

Keep a close eye on the Bucks as a real threat to pursue Butler, especially as the Suns’ hopes continue to fade away with their Beal contract conundrum. Milwaukee is right in the middle of their championship window with Giannis Antetokounmpo, especially after their blockbuster trade last year for Damian Lillard.

Would Butler be the perfect third piece to put Milwaukee over the top in comparison to the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers? Personally, it’s a real debate to be had. Butler’s on-court fit in Milwaukee is fantastic, and the Bucks might give the veteran wing the money he wants at season’s end too.

Milwaukee’s pursuit of Butler will be more complicated than the Warriors and Grizzlies, simply due to being over the second apron. In order to legally acquire Butler, the Bucks will need a facilitating team to help.

If the Bucks are able to move Pat Connaughton’s contract in a simple dump trade, or include it in a larger framework, they would escape the second apron. Khris Middleton, Bobby Portis and Marjon Beauchamp would also be on the chopping block for Milwaukee in a Butler blockbuster for salary-matching purposes.

Bucks — Jimmy Butler, Josh Richardson, Alec Burks

Heat — Khris Middleton, Bobby Portis, Josh Okogie, Simone Fontecchio, 2031 1st (top-5 protected) via Bucks

Hornets — Pat Connaughton, Marjon Beauchamp, 2031 2nd via Bucks

Pistons — Duncan Robinson, multiple second-round picks

This hypothetical four-team framework allows for the Charlotte Hornets and Detroit Pistons to enter the conversation as facilitators. And in the end, all four get what they’re looking for.

Everyone in the NBA is monitoring how this Butler situation will reach its dramatic end over the next week. However it ends, Butler has made his mark once again on another organization.

If Butler doesn’t get what he wants, this will always end up being the end result.

With rumors swirling about the possibility of Jimmy Butler being traded, it’s time to take a closer look at some potential trade destinations for the star forward. Butler, who is currently with the Miami Heat, has been a key player for the team since his arrival in 2019. However, with the Heat struggling this season, it’s possible that they could look to move Butler in order to shake things up.

One potential destination for Butler could be the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers are in need of some additional scoring and defensive help, and Butler could provide just that. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis already on the roster, adding Butler could give the Lakers a big three that could compete with any team in the league.

Another possible destination for Butler could be the New York Knicks. The Knicks have been looking to make a big splash in the trade market, and acquiring Butler could be just the move they need to turn their season around. With Butler’s scoring and defensive abilities, he could help elevate the Knicks to playoff contention.

The Philadelphia 76ers are another team that could benefit from acquiring Butler. The 76ers have been struggling with consistency this season, and adding Butler to their roster could help shore up their defense and provide a scoring boost. Plus, Butler already has a history with the team, having played for them from 2018-2019.

Overall, there are several teams that could benefit from acquiring Jimmy Butler in a trade. It will be interesting to see where Butler ends up and how his addition could impact the playoff picture in the NBA.

  • Jimmy Butler trade: How a blockbuster featuring Warriors and Julius Randle could make everyone happier

No matter how badly the Phoenix Suns may want Jimmy Butler, there just doesn’t seem to be a viable way for them to get him. Nobody wants the Bradley Beal contract. Even if someone did, Beal himself doesn’t seem eager to drop his no-trade clause to help the Suns dump him. His contract has, thus far, proven to be an insurmountable obstacle. The stars just aren’t aligning for the Suns.

But they may be aligning for someone else. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Heat have lowered their asking price on Butler in an apparent effort to hasten his departure following Monday’s indefinite suspension. According to Yahoo’s Kevin O’Connor, this has enticed the Golden State Warriors back into the bidding. The fit is obvious. Golden State badly needs a secondary scorer to pair with Stephen Curry. In a seemingly open Western Conference, the trio of Curry, Butler and Draymond Green would be a threat to almost anyone in a seven-game series with or without home-court advantage.

The Warriors don’t have a Beal-sized contract holding them back like the Suns do. If anything, they have the opposite problem. They don’t have a single, large cap figure to send the Heat for Butler. That means they need to send out a handful of players to match his money. This causes our first roadblock, as Golden State’s biggest tradable salary belongs to Andrew Wiggins. His $26 million salary would almost certainly be in the deal, but his contract extends into the 2026-27 season. The Heat, by all accounts, want to maintain their cap space for the summer of 2026’s strong free-agent class, so they only want short-term deals.

Even if the Heat don’t want Wiggins, plenty of other teams would. Wings are generally in short supply around the NBA, and after two down years, Wiggins has mostly returned to form this season. He may be owed two more years of money, but his salary is reasonable and he’s a fit on most rosters. Finding a new home for him won’t be hard. We just have to find a team that could potentially be interested in Wiggins and have something the Heat want.

And this is where we approach trade serendipity, because right now, there is a team that is A) quite familiar with Wiggins, B) employing a player the Heat are seemingly interested in and C) while perhaps not openly trying to dump that player, would certainly be open to it given how poorly that player has fit onto their roster this season. And so, let’s introduce the third major player in our proposed Butler blockbuster: Julius Randle. According to SNY’s Ian Begley, the Heat were not only interested in him during the summer, but have kept him on their radar during the Butler saga.

NBA trade rumors: Latest news on Jimmy Butler, De’Aaron Fox and Bradley Beal as deadline approaches

    Sam Quinn

NBA trade rumors: Latest news on Jimmy Butler, De'Aaron Fox and Bradley Beal as deadline approaches

Why Randle would appeal to the Heat

Randle doesn’t appear to be drawing much interest from the majority of the NBA at the moment, and, well, that’s justified. His fit in Minnesota has been clunky. He doesn’t really defend. He’s a power forward that needs the ball quite a bit and is an inconsistent jump-shooter, making him an iffy partner for both high-usage ball-handlers and traditional centers. Any notion that Randle could be a long-term replacement for Karl-Anthony Towns has likely been dispelled during Minnesota’s 25-21 start. The Timberwolves would probably prefer it if Randle were to opt out of his contract this summer, freeing up cash to try to re-sign Naz Reid and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. The only problem is that right now, there’s no obvious team for him to sign with in free agency. Without a trade partner, the Timberwolves might be stuck with him.

But Randle appeals to the Heat, specifically, for two reasons. The first, obvious explanation is that his contract ends before 2026 free agency. The second and more immediate concern is Miami’s desperate lack of shot-creation beyond Tyler Herro. When he is off of the floor, they score a pathetic 103.2 points per 100 possessions. The Heat badly need someone else who can dribble and score. Randle excels in that position. While his skill set does not lend itself to a championship-caliber roster, his time in New York proved that he is a great floor-raiser. If you just need him to come in and soak up possessions on a 45-win team, he’s perfect.

And that’s what the Heat need right now, not because winning 45 games is their long-term goal, but because it is extremely important that the Heat remain competitive this season, specifically. Why? Because they owe a lottery-protected pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder. If that pick does not convey this season, it becomes unprotected next season, and if it becomes unprotected next season, the lottery-protected 2027 pick they owe the Hornets from the Terry Rozier trade becomes unprotected in 2028. Essentially, they need to make the playoffs this season to avoid risking two unprotected picks. Randle is a path toward the first-round appearance they need.

What would Wolves get out of this?

So we understand Golden State’s interest in Butler and Miami’s in Randle. Where does Minnesota fit into this, aside from getting off of Randle. In theory, taking on another year of money in Wiggins is dangerous. To an extent it would be. Hypothetically, though, it shouldn’t be that hard to move Wiggins for someone cheaper if need be, though, because of that league-wide wing shortage. Would they be able to get optimal value? Maybe not, but suboptimal value is better than another year of the Randle experience.

As it stands right now, The Timberwolves are in line for a $91 million luxury-tax bill. Wiggins earns around $7 million less than Randle this season, so if the swap was one-for-one, Minnesota would wind up saving a small fortune. Even if the Timberwolves needed to take on some salary to make a three-team structure work, the $3 million difference between Randle and Wiggins next season could prove significant as the Timberwolves attempt to re-sign Reid and Alexander-Walker. That gap isn’t huge, but every dollar is going to count.

No matter how you slice it, though, the Wiggins contract would give Minnesota the flexibility that was seemingly a motivator for the Towns trade. Let’s say they decide they need to trade for a veteran point guard to replace the aging Mike Conley. Well, Wiggins, as a wing, is probably an easier contract to use in that search than Randle would have been. Let’s say Wiggins just steps onto the team and immediately fits. Could that open the door for a Jaden McDaniels trade that nets something valuable? Heck, even if a follow-up Wiggins move was as simple as turning him into a slightly less expensive player in the short-term, that freed up salary could be the difference between keeping and losing Reid or Alexander-Walker.

Would Wiggins be a better fit in Minnesota the second time around than he was the first? It’s hard to imagine he wouldn’t be. Having spent time on a winner, Wiggins has rounded out his game nicely. He’s a more reliable 3-point shooter than ever, which is quite important for a Timberwolves team that needs to space the floor for Anthony Edwards. His defense isn’t where it was during Golden State’s 2022 championship run, but there is at least proof of concept now. Wiggins has been a stellar defender in the past.

The big question about a possible Randle-for-Wiggins swap would be Minnesota’s starting lineup. Moving Reid into Randle’s slot makes the most sense. Minnesota’s lineups featuring him at power forward have fared quite well. Would Wiggins be willing to come off the bench at this point in his career? Or would Minnesota give him the Conley slot, as they did Donte DiVincenzo before his recent injury? While that alignment would cost the Timberwolves playmaking, the thought of Edwards, Wiggins and McDaniels together in the starting five as long, rangy wings is pretty tantalizing defensively.

Of the three parties involved here, Minnesota likely opens these conversations with the most skepticism. If the Timberwolves don’t see Wiggins as a fit, perhaps they’d loop in a fourth team to take him. But the notion of getting off of Randle now, before he can pick up that player option, carries meaningful value to them. From that perspective, the basic framework of a deal exists here. The question is how we round out the entire trade.

    Details of a potential blockbuster

For starters, Golden State needs to shed more money. Dennis Schroder going to Miami would be a somewhat obvious step in that direction. The Heat could use another guard, and his expiring salary won’t bother them. The Heat are going to need to be compensated for Butler as well. Golden State’s first-round pick this season, with a top-four protection, seems appropriate. The Warriors are a lottery team as of this writing, so the Heat would be getting a potentially interesting pick in a strong draft, but their hope would be that Butler’s addition would at least carry them into the playoffs. The Heat have a stellar track record with mid-first-round picks, so that Warriors pick could be quite valuable to them. By giving up only this year’s pick, the Warriors could avoid the Stepien Rule issues that come with owing out picks in future seasons.

It wouldn’t be a Butler deal without looping in the Pistons as a cap facilitator. Detroit has $14 million or so in cap space, but it also has the cap room mid-level exception at just under $8 million to work with. Some combination of Warriors mid-tier salaries like Gary Payton II, Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson and Kevon Looney would need to go to make this work, and with the Warriors so close to a hard cap at the first apron, they don’t have room to take in more money than they send out here. The Pistons would probably need a first-round pick to participate. Maybe the compromise on Golden State’s end would be a protected one in 2027 or 2028. That’s still two outgoing first-round picks in a Butler trade, but it would allow them to keep Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski for whatever comes after the Curry-Butler-Green era.

Figuring out a trade of this magnitude is never easy, but unlike the Phoenix scenarios, there’s a sensible outline here. All three parties would have clear and reasonable motives for seeking this sort of a deal. That guarantees nothing this time of a year, but it’s a great starting point.

The NBA offseason is always full of surprises, and this year is no different. One of the biggest rumors swirling around right now involves the possibility of a blockbuster trade involving Jimmy Butler and the Golden State Warriors.

With the Warriors looking to add another star player to their already stacked lineup, and Butler reportedly looking to leave the Miami Heat, a potential trade could be in the works. But what would it take to make this deal happen, and how could it benefit all parties involved?

One possible scenario that has been discussed is a trade that would send Jimmy Butler to the Warriors in exchange for a package that includes Julius Randle. This trade could make everyone involved happier for a few reasons.

For the Warriors, adding Butler to their lineup would give them another All-Star caliber player to pair with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Butler’s defensive prowess and scoring ability would make the Warriors an even more formidable team in the Western Conference.

On the other hand, the Heat would receive Julius Randle, a talented forward who could provide some much-needed frontcourt depth. Randle’s scoring and rebounding abilities would be a valuable addition to the Heat’s roster, and could help fill the void left by Butler’s departure.

Overall, a trade involving Jimmy Butler and Julius Randle could benefit both teams involved, as well as the players themselves. It’s always exciting to see how these types of blockbuster trades play out, and this one could be a win-win for everyone involved.
