  • NHL Buzz: Hughes game-time decision for Canucks against Red Wings

    Calgary Flames

Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee each made his debut with the Flames in a 3-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

Frost and Farabee were acquired on Thursday in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers for forwards Andrei Kuzmenko and Jakob Pelletier, a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, and a seventh-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft.

“I think it’s awesome,” Farabee said. “Just for ‘Frosty’ and I it’s a little bit of a fresh start for our careers. These guys are playing really well right now and in a great spot and hopefully we can add to that and help them keep it going.”

Farabee, who has 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists) in 51 games, was the right wing on Calgary’s top line with Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau. Frost, who has 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists) in 50 games, was the center on a line with Yegor Sharangovich and Martin Pospisil.

“It’s exciting for us both,” Frost said. ” Joel and I have been talking about it. In the moment, you’re obviously sad to leave your teammates you’ve been with and group of guys. At the same time, I think both of us probably needed a fresh start anyway. In the hunt here. Hopefully we can come in and give the team a boost.”

The Flames (25-19-7) are fourth in the Pacific Division and hold the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference, one point ahead of the Vancouver Canucks.

“You lose teammates, but you also recognize we’re bringing in some guys that are going to make our team better,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. “Players are smart. They know that. At the end of the day they’re excited to have them and welcome them into our team.” — Aaron Vickers

In today’s NHL Buzz, all eyes are on Vancouver Canucks’ star forward Quinn Hughes as he is listed as a game-time decision for tonight’s matchup against the Detroit Red Wings.

Hughes, who has been a key player for the Canucks this season, is dealing with a lower-body injury that has kept him out of the lineup for the past few games. The young defenseman has been a force on both ends of the ice, leading the team in points and playing crucial minutes on the power play and penalty kill.

With Hughes potentially returning to the lineup tonight, Canucks fans are hopeful that his presence will give the team a much-needed boost as they look to secure a victory against the Red Wings. However, his status remains uncertain as the coaching staff will make a final decision closer to game time.

Stay tuned for more updates on Quinn Hughes’ status and all the latest news from around the NHL in our next NHL Buzz update.

  • I Who Have Never Known Men: the lost dystopia finding new readers after buzz on TikTok | Books

Two people a year, or maybe three, used to buy Jacqueline Harpman’s novel I Who Have Never Known Men. Her story of a girl locked in a cage with 39 women in an underground bunker on a nameless world was published in 1995 then slid into obscurity.

Something has changed since then, because the novel’s tale of sisterhood and survival has become one of the hottest reads this year, drawing comparisons to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Octavia E Butler’s Parable series of novels.

IWHNKM, as it is known in hashtags on BookTok, the community of TikTok users who have made reading cool again, is in such demand that bookshops in the US have struggled to keep it in stock.

In the UK it has become “a bestselling staple of fiction sections across our bookshops”, according to Waterstones’ head of books, Bea Carvalho. Its publisher, Vintage, which reissued the novel in 2019, sold 45,000 copies last year, an elevenfold rise on 2022.

The novel has also appeared on the must-read lists of Service95, a newsletter, book club and website set up by Dua Lipa, one of a growing group of celebrities in music and fashion using their clout to support literature.

“It’s described as speculative fiction/sci-fi, but it’s quite desolate in its writing in a way I haven’t found with other books,” said Hali Brown, who runs the Books on the Bedside TikTok account with her sister Hana.

BookTok reviewer Hali Brown. Photograph: @booksonthebedside/TikTok

The narrator is the youngest of 40 captives and too young to remember her past. “All the guards are men,” Brown said, “and that’s all the women know about gender. They never really understand why they are there or how long they would be kept for.” Or any sense of time at all.

They may be on Earth. They may discover the reasons why they are there. They may find other people. Or they may not.

“It’s quite bleak but incredibly powerful,” Brown added. “It was unbelievably gripping for something so desperate.”

Rather like the questions posed by the post-apocalyptic novel, there are few clear answers to why it has become so successful. Harpman was a Belgian writer who died in 2012 aged 82. Her family fled to Casablanca during the second world war in fear of persecution for their Jewish roots.

The novel’s translator, Ros Schwartz, said she was gobsmacked by the turnaround of the book’s fortunes. “I guess it just strikes a chord with the younger generation, which it didn’t at the time – and whether that’s to do with publicity or whether it’s completely random, I don’t know. That’s one of the wonderful things about publishing – you never know.”

Brown lists the book’s qualities as being “accessibly written” and “not very long” (about 200 pages), as well as resonating with the modern political context of attacks on women’s rights and diversity at work.

“There’s lots happening in terms of women feeling like things are going backwards and not really understanding why or how that’s able to happen,” she said. The politics of Harpman’s world are sparse, unlike other dystopian fiction such as The Handmaid’s Tale or The Hunger Games. “Its political understanding of the world, I think, is relatable to a lot of young women,” Brown added.

Perhaps another reason for the book’s success second time round is that Schwartz revised her translation with the benefit of two decades’ more experience as a translator, with works including a fresh version of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince and honours such as becoming a chevalier in the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Schwartz’s first attempt in the mid-90s used words that were often similar to their French counterparts. The effect of the more direct translation was to make the narrator seem too erudite for a young girl kept in a cage without education and no ability to read or write. “So I went through it and got rid of all the Latinate language. It was about finding the right voice for the narrator that didn’t make her sound over-educated but without making her sound stupid or a caricature.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

Another factor may be a title change. Nick Skidmore, publishing director at Vintage, said the book was originally published in translation as The Mysteries of Silence, rather than the French title, Moi Qui N’ai Pas Connu Les Hommes.

“A colleague of mine found this book at the time when Trump was in [his first term] and The Handmaid’s Tale was back in the bestsellers’ list. So we read it and we were mesmerised by it,” Skidmore said. The book was print-on-demand, selling only “two or three a year”.

Switching titles to a more direct translation of the French may be “one of the markers of its success”, he added. “I think the book captures this sense of the world where people are feeling bewildered. It’s a profoundly existential book, like some of the classics resonating with gen Z right now – Dostoevsky’s White Nights, for example. The type of stories that engage with very weighty questions of our existence.”

Susan Watkins, professor of women’s writing at Leeds Beckett University, said that dystopian fiction was often popular because it allowed readers to “identify with someone who’s resisting the totalitarian or authoritarian world in which they’re placed”.

Another factor in the appeal of dystopian fiction, Watkins said, is the process of “cognitive estrangement”, a term used by critic Darko Suvin to describe how science fiction writers create unfamiliarity in an invented world so they can examine a social or cultural change in the present day.

“For readers who perceive the threats to women’s reproductive rights and their sexual liberty, and the idea that feminism is being curtailed in large parts of the world, they’re seeing something of that in the text.”

  • Verizon conquers remaining Dead Zones through Satellite with help of Test Man and Buzz Aldrin | News Release

NEW YORK – Today, Verizon is pushing the boundaries of satellite and terrestrial telecommunications convergence. Satellites are no longer reserved for the extraordinary—they are woven into the everyday, and are being used to help connect and power customers’ lives.

A lot has changed since 2014 when Verizon’s famous test man roamed the country asking “Can you hear me now?” Now he’s back, and reaching the limits of space with the help of American icon and astronaut Buzz Aldrin. They’re partnering to show how America’s largest network just got better.

“Fifty-six years ago I was one of the select few that made it into Space and the first team to help America conquer the moon,” said Buzz Aldrin, General USAF, Doctor of Astronautics. “Back then, Space was the great unknown, and now we’ve never been closer to it. I can’t look up in the sky without seeing a satellite fly by. It’s remarkable to see how far the human race – and technology – has come.”

“It’s been 10 years since I last asked America “Can you hear me now?,” said Paul Marcarelli, the Original Verizon Test Man. “Back then dead zones were everywhere and it’s safe to say today they are only in the most remote places like the dark side of the moon. Verizon’s always been on a mission to give its customers the very best experience, anticipate their changing needs and drive innovation. Satellite is for sure the next frontier.”

Freedom to message anywhere with satellite-power.

Verizon engineers are relentlessly focused on providing the most reliable network experience for customers. Verizon’s network covers more than 99% of where people live, work and play, leaving very few places throughout the country where customers can’t connect. With the addition of satellite back-up to Verizon’s already robust network, Verizon is making the largest network even better.

Satellites play a crucial role in making connectivity with Verizon even more reliable, enabling text messaging in the few areas where traditional terrestrial-based cellular networks might not reach. Here’s how:

    • Customers with select devices have access to satellite messaging features to enhance connectivity in areas without cellular coverage, allowing customers to send an emergency SOS message and provide their location.
    • Verizon is collaborating with Skylo to make satellite messaging features and location detection available for customers with select Android devices.
    • And recently, AST SpaceMobile and Verizon announced a strategic partnership with a commitment of $100 million from Verizon, to provide direct-to-cellular AST SpaceMobile service when needed for Verizon customers. The combination of Verizon’s highly reliable terrestrial mobile network, use of the multi-operator 850 Mhz band and AST’s commercial satellite array in low Earth orbit, is planned to enable cellular consumers to stay connected wherever they are, anywhere in the continental United States.

This week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted AST Special Temporary Authority (STA) authorizing beta service in the United States. This approval enables AST SpaceMobile’s first five commercial BlueBird satellites, operating in low Earth orbit today, to test satellite connections with Verizon smartphones supporting voice, full data and video applications, and other native cellular capabilities, without the need of any specialized software or device support or update.

Satellites provide reliable service in emergency situations.

Verizon utilizes nearly 300 satellite-based portable network assets to ensure connectivity where fiber cables are unavailable or compromised. These assets provide temporary network access for first responders and in areas with limited permanent infrastructure, or for linking cell sites to the broader network when fiber cables are compromised due to power outages or physical damage.

Satellite connections speed up delivery of service to customers in remote areas.

Verizon uses satellite connections as backhaul for cell sites in remote areas (like forests and mountain tops) where traditional wired connections like fiber are not yet available. Satellite connections can be set up quickly compared to laying fiber, particularly in areas with significant geographical or logistical barriers. This rapid deployment is a useful solution while fiber optics is being planned and deployed. This allows cell sites to be operational and provide service while waiting for the installation of a more robust and high-capacity connection.

Verizon Conquers Remaining Dead Zones Through Satellite with Help of Test Man and Buzz Aldrin

In a groundbreaking partnership, Verizon has successfully eliminated all remaining dead zones across the United States with the help of Test Man and astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Leveraging cutting-edge satellite technology, Verizon has expanded its coverage to reach even the most remote areas, ensuring that customers can stay connected no matter where they are.

Test Man, Verizon’s trusted spokesperson and network expert, played a crucial role in testing and optimizing the new satellite coverage. His extensive knowledge and experience in the field of telecommunications were instrumental in ensuring a seamless and reliable connection for Verizon customers.

Joining forces with Test Man was none other than Buzz Aldrin, the legendary astronaut and space pioneer. Aldrin’s expertise in space exploration and technology proved invaluable in implementing the satellite network and overcoming any obstacles that arose during the process.

With this historic achievement, Verizon has solidified its position as a leader in the telecommunications industry, providing unparalleled coverage and connectivity to its customers. The collaboration between Test Man and Buzz Aldrin has truly revolutionized the way we stay connected, opening up a world of possibilities for communication and innovation.

Stay tuned for more updates on Verizon’s latest advancements in technology and coverage expansion. With Test Man and Buzz Aldrin leading the way, the sky is truly the limit.

  • Sean Penn Sparking Early Oscar Buzz for PTA’s ‘One Battle After Another? — World of Reel

It’s way too early to speculate about next year’s Oscars, but industry insider Kris Tapley, who last worked for Netflix, has decided to start the campaign early for Sean Penn.

He’s echoing what I previously reported about Penn’s performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another”; the man is said to be “absolutely terrifying” as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw.

I reported that, apparently, Penn “steals the show” as Lockjaw. Sporting a grey-ish hawk, his character is described as a “great villain” that has the power and presence to give you nightmares.

Tapley is taking it a step further, implying that an unnamed Oscar-nominated filmmaker recently told him that Penn could very well win a third Oscar for his work in PTA’s film:

Sean Penn Sparking Early Oscar Buzz for PTA’s ‘One Battle After Another? — World of Reel

As awards season approaches, the buzz surrounding potential Oscar contenders is starting to build. One name that is already generating a lot of attention is Sean Penn, who stars in Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming film “One Battle After Another.”

Penn’s performance in the film has been described as nothing short of transformative, with many critics hailing it as one of the actor’s best performances to date. His portrayal of a war veteran struggling to re-adjust to civilian life has been praised for its raw emotion and depth.

With a director like Paul Thomas Anderson at the helm, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to bring out the best in his actors, it’s no surprise that Penn’s performance is already generating Oscar buzz.

Of course, it’s still early days and there are many more films set to be released before the Oscars take place. But if the early reactions are anything to go by, Sean Penn could be a strong contender for a Best Actor nomination come awards season.

Keep an eye on this space for all the latest updates on “One Battle After Another” and the rest of the awards season contenders.

  • Jane Slater’s playful prediction sparks buzz around who’ll be the Cowboys’ next head coach

The Dallas Cowboys made a surprising move this offseason by parting ways with head coach Mike McCarthy. As the team searches for its next leader, several names have surfaced, including Deion Sanders and Tony Romo. However, Brian Schottenheimer, the current offensive coordinator for the Cowboys, has emerged as a strong contender after completing an in-person interview with the organization this week. Alongside former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, Schottenheimer is one of the most notable candidates being considered for the position.

Jane Slater of NFL Network, a well-known and respected reporter, offered an entertaining take on the situation. “I have no intel telling me a Cowboys HC announcement is coming in the next few hours other than the fact I have just sat down to get my hair done, which takes 3.5 hours,” she joked.

Slater added, “So fully expect it to happen because of that, and don’t be surprised when it’s Schotty. Carry on.” Her remarks have fueled speculation that Schottenheimer may indeed be the frontrunner for the role.

    Related:

Having served as Dallas’ offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, Schottenheimer has already established himself within the team’s structure and culture. He is well-regarded by the players, who are reportedly comfortable working with him. This familiarity could make him a logical choice to step into the head coaching role. Known affectionately as “Schotty,” his potential promotion has sparked much debate among fans and analysts alike.

Could Schottenheimer be the answer for Dallas?

The Cowboys are coming off a disappointing 2024 season, a stark contrast to their three consecutive 12-5 campaigns in prior years. Despite their regular-season success during that stretch, they consistently failed to advance past the divisional round of the playoffs. With NFC East rivals like the Philadelphia Eagles emerging as Super Bowl contenders and the Washington Commanders improving under young talent like Jayden Daniels, Dallas faces mounting pressure to remain competitive.

Many believe Schottenheimer could be the key to revitalizing the team and pushing them beyond their recent playoff struggles. His familiarity with the roster and ability to connect with players could provide stability and a fresh perspective.

As speculation continues to swirl, one thing is clear: whoever takes over as head coach will carry the weight of immense expectations from Cowboys fans eager to see their team return to glory.

Jane Slater, a well-known reporter for the NFL Network, recently made a playful prediction that has sparked a whirlwind of speculation around who will be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. In a recent interview, Slater suggested that former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo could potentially make a return to the team, but this time as the head coach.

While Slater’s prediction may have been made in jest, it has certainly caught the attention of Cowboys fans and NFL analysts alike. Romo, who is now working as a commentator for CBS Sports, has always been a beloved figure in Dallas and many have long speculated that he could one day make the transition to coaching.

Of course, this is all just speculation at this point and there is no indication that the Cowboys are seriously considering Romo for the head coaching position. However, it’s fun to imagine what the team could look like under the leadership of one of its most iconic former players.

Only time will tell who the Cowboys’ next head coach will be, but for now, Jane Slater’s playful prediction has certainly added an interesting twist to the ongoing coaching search. Stay tuned for more updates as the search continues.

  • Shams Charania’s Inside Pass: Trade buzz on Lakers, Bulls, rest of NBA

During the NBA season and into the summer, Shams Charania’s Inside Pass will tackle the news and transaction storylines that can shake up the league.

The Los Angeles Lakers (23-18) are sitting in a perilous position, currently just a game ahead of the Dallas Mavericks for sixth in the West, and the guaranteed playoff spot that comes with it. Their two cornerstones — the 40-year-old LeBron James and Anthony Davis — continue to perform at elite levels, both almost certain to make another All-Star Game appearance next month in San Francisco.

But with the Feb. 6 trade deadline a little more than two weeks away, league sources told ESPN that James and Davis are growing concerned about the Lakers’ ability to make significant roster upgrades with their two tradeable first-rounders. James, a four-time champion, and Davis, a one-time champ, have expressed that they want the franchise to make moves to contend for a championship, with the co-stars believing the Lakers are potentially a piece or two away, sources said.

James and Lakers head coach J.J. Redick made some very telling comments after the team’s road blowout loss to the LA Clippers on Sunday night.
