  • Is Byron Leftwich Dark Horse to Land Seattle Seahawks’ Offensive Coordinator Job?

Shortly after news broke that the Seattle Seahawks had scheduled Minnesota Vikings assistant Grant Udinski for a second interview to discuss their offensive coordinator vacancy on Friday, an unexpected candidate emerged from the woodwork.

In a separate post on X, CBS insider Jonathan Jones reported the Seahawks had recently spoke with former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich about the position, throwing his hat in the ring with hopes of landing a play calling gig after being out of the league for the past two seasons.

From a fit standpoint, Seattle’s interest in Leftwich creates plenty of questions. Beyond the fact he hasn’t coached in two years, his offense hasn’t mirrored the ones in Detroit and Baltimore, two organizations that coach Mike Macdonald holds in high regard and would love to emulate in terms of physicality and toughness on that side of the ball.

However, if the Seahawks want to bring a proven play caller with a strong resume headlined by a Super Bowl ring on board, Leftwich stacks up favorably against Kubiak and the rest of the candidates the team has interviewed thus far.

Previously playing quarterback in the NFL for nine seasons with the Jaguars, Buccaneers, Falcons, and Steelers after a standout college career at Marshall, Leftwich only has seven seasons of coaching experience under his belt. But under the tutelage of coach Bruce Arians, he quickly emerged as one of the best young assistants in the sport, climbing from an intern to an offensive coordinator position in just three seasons.

Though Leftwich’s first audition as a coordinator did not go well when thrust into the position midway through a dreadful three-win season for the Cardinals in 2018, he reunited with Arians in Tampa Bay the following season and engineered the second-ranked scoring offense despite quarterback Jameis Winston’s propensity for throwing interceptions. A leaky defense led to a 7-9 finish, but the foundation had been set for great success with an upgrade under center.

Fortunately for the Buccaneers, a certain legend by the name of Tom Brady became a free agent and replaced Winston, leading the team to a Super Bowl win in 2020 while excelling in Leftwich’s scheme. They didn’t quite repeat the following season, but still had a top-three offense and went 13-4 in the regular season behind a potent passing attack featuring Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

That success didn’t carry over into Leftwich’s final season with the franchise though. With injuries hitting the team and an aging Brady finally losing some steam in the battle against Father Time, the Buccaneers plunged to 25th in scoring offense and lost in the wild card round, leading to his dismissal as coordinator only a few days later.

Since then, Leftwich hasn’t been employed by an NFL team in any capacity, and to this point, the Seahawks have been the only team to speak with him this coaching cycle. Looking at his prior track record, there’s a few possible reasons for that lack of interest around the league.

For one, as successful as Leftwich building an explosive passing game, the Buccaneers never had even a decent run game during his four years as play caller, finishing 24th or worse in rushing each season. This included plummeting to dead last in 2021, which played a big part of the team’s overall regression from a top-five offense into a bottom third unit in scoring that led to his firing.

Second, most of the teams seeking an offensive coordinator such as the Bears, Patriots, and Raiders have a young quarterback already in place or will be looking to draft and develop one. Leftwich has only worked with a starting quarterback on a rookie deal once in his coaching career and while they only were paired together for one season, Josh Rosen didn’t pan out under his watch with the Cardinals.

Of those two issues, Leftwich’s inability to orchestrate a quality ground game mirrors what led to Grubb being dismissed after his lone season as Seattle’s play caller. If Macdonald truly wants an offense built around toughness, physicality, and complementary football, hiring him as the replacement would seem counterintuitive.

But looking at the Seahawks current personnel, Leftwich’s history of coordinating elite passing attacks at the NFL level – something Grubb had only done in college – undoubtedly creates some intrigue about what he could cook up in the Pacific Northwest. He would inherit a talented veteran quarterback in Geno Smith along with receivers DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, giving him a fun trio to implement his scheme with.

It’s also worth noting that Tampa Bay didn’t have the running back talent that Seattle currently has on the roster during Leftwich’s time with the team either. While Ronald Jones and Leonard Fournette provided a bit of a spark during the Super Bowl-winning season, they didn’t have a single 1,000-yard rusher in those four seasons and the duo of Ken Walker III and Zach Charbonnet would provide a better opportunity for him to build a more balanced offense.

Of course, as will be the case with any of the candidates in consideration, the success of the next coordinator will depend a great deal on what the Seahawks do this offseason to shore up their offensive line. If the group remains as leaky as it was in pass protection and ineffective generating push in the run game, it won’t matter how creative the play caller is when it comes to scheming up ways to get the ball to his playmakers.

But for those discounting Leftwich’s candidacy, he has Super Bowl pedigree and by all accounts, players loved working with him during his tenure in Tampa Bay. While the run game concerns have validity, especially after the failed Grubb experiment, he could be the best option to get the most out of Smith and his veteran receivers with the window to compete in the NFC West currently open, making him a sleeper to watch as interviews continue.

With the recent departure of Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, the team is in need of a new play-caller to lead their offense. While there have been several names circulating as potential candidates for the job, one dark horse candidate that has emerged is Byron Leftwich.

Leftwich, currently the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has been garnering attention for his work with quarterback Tom Brady and the Buccaneers’ high-powered offense. Despite being relatively young and inexperienced in comparison to other candidates, Leftwich’s offensive acumen and ability to develop young quarterbacks could make him an attractive option for the Seahawks.

While there has been no official confirmation of Leftwich’s candidacy for the job, his name has been mentioned among the potential candidates being considered by the Seahawks. With his track record of success and potential to bring a fresh perspective to Seattle’s offense, Leftwich could very well be the dark horse candidate to land the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator job.

Stay tuned for updates on the Seahawks’ search for a new offensive coordinator and whether Byron Leftwich emerges as the frontrunner for the position.

  • Rep Byron Donalds says US will celebrate Trump deporting immigrants | News

Americans will thank Donald Trump for deportations after he is sworn in as the 47th president, Florida representative Byron Donalds said ahead of the inauguration.

The president-elect has promised severe limits on immigration from his first day in office.

Mr Trump, who will be sworn in for his second term at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., has also said that he will sign around 100 executive actions on his first day, with a focus on immigration.

Speaking to Fox News, Mr Donalds said: “When Americans see deportations or repatriations happen, they’re gonna be like thank you.

“They’re gonna be like, this is the stability that we were asking for. Daddy’s back.”

Rep Byron Donalds, a Republican congressman from Florida, recently made controversial comments regarding former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. In a statement to the press, Donalds asserted that the United States should celebrate Trump’s efforts to deport immigrants during his time in office.

Donalds, a staunch supporter of Trump, praised the former president for his tough stance on immigration and claimed that deporting immigrants was necessary to protect American jobs and national security. He also argued that Trump’s policies helped reduce crime rates and alleviate strain on the country’s resources.

However, Donalds’ comments have sparked backlash from critics who accuse him of promoting xenophobia and discrimination against immigrants. Many have pointed out that Trump’s immigration policies resulted in the separation of families and the mistreatment of asylum seekers, sparking a humanitarian crisis at the border.

As the debate over immigration reform continues to rage on in Congress, Donalds’ remarks serve as a reminder of the deep ideological divide on the issue. While some lawmakers advocate for stricter enforcement measures, others push for more compassionate and comprehensive immigration policies.

It remains to be seen how Donalds’ comments will impact the ongoing discussions on immigration reform and whether they will resonate with his constituents in Florida. For now, the debate over Trump’s legacy on immigration continues to unfold in the political arena.

  • Rep. Byron Donalds makes his move for a potential gubernatorial bid in 2026

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., has been telling potential donors and Florida political players that he is running for governor in 2026, the clearest signal yet that his much-expected bid is moving forward.

Donalds, who represents southwest Florida, has long been rumored to be considering a campaign to replace term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis, but those rumors have ramped up in recent days. Last weekend, at a state Republican Party meeting in Orlando, Donalds sponsored a hospitality suite and told people he is running.

In the past week, he has sent an even clearer sign of his intentions in a series of meetings with key lobbyists and political donors.

The account of Donalds’ preparations come from five sources familiar with the meetings and his thinking.

“He was in town [Tallahassee] meeting with all the folks you need to meet with. He told them he is in,” a source who met with Donalds said. “It’s the steps any candidate takes as they prepare to run for governor.”

Donalds told NBC News: “I’m fully focused on helping President Trump pass his America First Agenda. Florida will proudly lead the way.”

The Republican field to replace DeSantis was once seen to be as big as five or six candidates, but with state Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis running for Congress and state Attorney General Ashley Moody most likely being appointed to fill the Senate seat vacated by Marco Rubio, President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for secretary of state, the field has considerably narrowed.

The two most prominent Republican names now considered to be running are Donalds and state Agriculture Commission Wilton Simpson, who previously was president of the state Senate.

Former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, who recently took a job as an anchor on the conservative TV network OAN, has also publicly signaled he is considering a run, which was first reported by the Tampa Bay Times.

“Florida needs a Governor who can break the control insurance companies have over Tallahassee. I can do that, so it’s something Ginger and I are considering,” Gaetz said in a message to NBC News, referring to his wife.

Simpson’s team did not respond to requests for comment.

Donalds is considered a close ally of Trump and a mainstay on cable news channels, giving him a high profile and ability to raise significant out-of-state money. But Simpson is a longtime veteran of Florida politics with $30 million already in the bank, making him a formidable potential candidate.

The forthcoming nationally watched Republican primary for governor will almost certainly hinge on one thing: Trump.

Florida, where Trump resides, is now a solidly red state after years of Republican domination, and Trump won it by nearly 15 percentage points. He is seen as the biggest kingmaker in Florida politics, including its coming midterm race for governor.

Simpson has a long relationship with Trump’s incoming White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, as does Donalds. Donalds is viewed as having a closer direct relationship with Trump after having served as one of his most vocal 2024 allies and closest congressional confidants.

In addition, Donalds has hired as one of his top Florida advisers Ryan Smith, a former business partner with James Blair, the political director of Trump’s 2024 campaign, who will now serve as a top administration official.

Along with Smith, Donalds is working with Brad Herold, a veteran of Florida Republican politics, who was one of the top early advisers for DeSantis when he made his underdog bid for governor in 2018. Donalds has also hired Tony Fabrizio, who was a top Trump pollster, and fundraiser Megan McKinley, who has worked for Rubio and Sen. Todd Young of Indiana, former chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

While the field has narrowed, DeSantis himself is seen as a potential wild card.

He was once so close with Donalds that Donalds introduced DeSantis and his family at his re-election night party in 2022. The two have had a swift falling out, however, after Donalds backed Trump in the GOP presidential primary. DeSantis has never been close with Simpson, making it unlikely he would endorse him.

To find a candidate he could formally back, two people familiar with his thinking said, DeSantis could appoint Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez to become president of Florida International University, her alma mater, and her replacement would be viewed as DeSantis’ preferred pick to run for governor to replace him.

There is not yet a short list for who could be in line for that position.

There is no set timeline for when Donalds or any other candidate would make their bids official, but there are concerns about his leaving Congress too soon with Republicans holding a slim majority in the House.

The timeline for any announcement could hinge, in part, on the conclusion of two special congressional races in Florida necessitated by Gaetz’s resignation from the House and Trump’s selecting Rep. Mike Waltz as his national security adviser. Patronis and state Rep. Randy Fine, respectively, are heavily favored in the races for those seats, which lean Republican.

The special election for both seats is set for April 1.

Rep. Byron Donalds, the rising star in the Republican Party, has officially announced his intention to run for governor in 2026. The Florida congressman, known for his conservative values and unwavering support for former President Donald Trump, has been building a strong base of supporters across the state.

Donalds, who was first elected to Congress in 2020, has quickly made a name for himself as a staunch defender of conservative principles. He has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration’s policies and has consistently stood up for the rights of Floridians.

With his eye on the governor’s mansion, Donalds has wasted no time in laying the groundwork for his potential bid. He has been traveling across the state, meeting with voters and building relationships with key Republican officials.

As he prepares to launch his campaign, Donalds is positioning himself as a strong contender in what is sure to be a crowded field. With his charisma, conservative values, and strong track record of leadership, he is sure to be a force to be reckoned with in the 2026 gubernatorial race. Keep an eye on this rising star in the Republican Party as he makes his move for the top job in Florida.

  • Top Trump ally Byron Donalds turns up volume on likely 2026 run for Florida governor

Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., appears to be getting more vocal about running for Florida governor in 2026 in the race to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Donalds, a leading friend, ally and supporter of President-elect Trump in the House of Representatives, in recent days has been telling potential donors and Florida political players that he intends to run for governor, Republican sources confirm to Fox News.

Some of those conversations occurred last weekend in Orlando at the Florida GOP’s annual meeting.

“He’s serious,” a source with knowledge told Fox News.

WHAT BYRON DONALDS SAID ON FOX NEWS SUNDAY

Another signal came a week ago when Donalds hired prominent Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio’s research firm. Fabrizio was a top pollster in Trump’s 2016 and 2024 presidential campaigns.

WHY TRUMP IS PRAISING ONE-TIME PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY RIVAL DESANTIS

The conservative former state lawmaker who has represented parts of southwest Florida’s 19th District in Congress for four years has been eyeing a potential gubernatorial bid for months.

“I’ve thought about it. I don’t really rule anything out,” Donalds said in a Fox News Digital interview last spring when asked about a possible run for governor.

Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla. (Fox News Digital/Paul Steinhauser/File)

Donalds, who was a top surrogate on the campaign trail last year for Trump, was interviewed a few days after Trump, at a closed-door fundraiser in New York City, suggested that if Donalds ran for Florida governor in 2026, he’d have “many friends in the race.”

“It’s really cool that people back home in Florida consider me to be able to be the state’s next governor. It’s really an honor. It’s honestly surreal thinking about it because I’m 45 and my journey through politics has been a really fruitful one,” Donalds said at the time. “It’s really humbling and an honor, but I just focus on doing the job I have.”

Another prominent Florida Republican who’s believed to be considering a run is state Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, the former president of the state Senate.

And former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who was Trump’s first choice for attorney general in his second administration before dropping out amid controversy, has also said he’s thinking of running.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody was also thought to be mulling a run to succeed DeSantis, her ally in Tallahassee, but the governor on Thursday named Moody to succeed Sen. Marco Rubio, Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, who is likely to be one of the president-elect’s first Cabinet picks to be confirmed by the Senate.

And Florida’s chief financial officer, Jimmy Patronis, who was also believed to be interested in a potential gubernatorial campaign, is considered the front-runner in this month’s special congressional election to fill Gaetz’s seat.

“With Moody going to the Senate, should he choose to run for governor, Donalds would be the clear favorite over Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, who is the Tallahassee establishment’s choice,” Fabrizio said. “We’ll see if the Tallahassee establishment smartens up after betting and losing badly in 2010 against [former two-term governor and current Sen.] Rick Scott and in 2018 against Ron DeSantis.”

With Florida, which was once a top general election battleground state, now firmly red, the slowly emerging gubernatorial battle may be determined by whom Trump, the GOP’s kingmaker in his adopted home state of Florida and across the country, may eventually back.

But not to be discounted is any possible endorsement by DeSantis in the race to succeed the governor.

Byron Donalds, a top ally of former President Donald Trump, is making headlines as he turns up the volume on his likely 2026 run for Florida governor. The Republican congressman has been a vocal supporter of Trump and his policies, and has quickly risen through the ranks in the GOP.

Donalds, who represents Florida’s 19th congressional district, has been gaining national attention for his conservative stances on issues such as immigration, gun rights, and fiscal responsibility. He has also been a staunch critic of President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party, earning him a reputation as a firebrand in conservative circles.

With the 2026 gubernatorial race looming on the horizon, Donalds has been ramping up his public appearances and fundraising efforts in preparation for a potential run. Many political analysts believe that he could be a formidable candidate, given his strong support among Trump supporters and his proven track record of winning elections in Florida.

As Donalds continues to build momentum for his gubernatorial bid, all eyes will be on him as he navigates the complex world of Florida politics. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development in the Sunshine State’s political landscape.

  • ‘I like the trade’… Byron Scott gives verdict on both sides of LA Lakers double deal

Former Los Angeles Lakers star and coach Byron Scott has weighed in on the team’s big trade after watching the players begin life on their new teams.

At the end of December, LA Lakers GM Rob Pelinka made a move, amid concerns the team would not be active during the trade window.

A four-player deal was agreed with the Brooklyn Nets to acquire Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton, sending D’Angelo Russell and Maxwell Lewis in the opposite direction.

Former NBA star Patrick Beverley was among the ex-pros to instantly react, and claimed the Nets got the better deal.

Finney-Smith has meanwhile made a strong impression in LA, with Anthony Davis labelling him a ‘defensive monster’.

Byron Scott likes Lakers two signings

Byron Scott told his Fast Break YouTube channel that he likes the trade from a LA Lakers perspective, in regards to both Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton.

He says he has already spotted signs the pair have helped the Lakers, giving them what they have been missing.

Scott said: “I think it thinks already helped. You got two players back from Jersey. Both of these guys are very good defensive players, decent offensive players.

“I think what the Lakers have needed over the last couple of years is that wing, that wing perimeter defender who can also knock down a three.”

Scott’s one question was whether the trade will transform the team enough, adding: “Yeah I like the trade, I think it’s good on both ends of the floor for the Lakers, you know, but will this trade get them to the next level?

“That’s that’s a question that’s gonna need to be answered later on in the season.”

    Byron Scott on D’Angelo Russell

Moving the other way was D’Angelo Russell, who was traded to the Brooklyn Nets from the LA Lakers for a second time, following a similar exchange in 2017.

Russell scored 24 points on his first game back in Brooklyn, and Scott believes the pressure-free environment suits him, a player he once coached in Los Angeles.

He explained: “It’s a different amount of pressure when you play here in LA as we know, when you got that purple and gold on and you playing here in LA, it’s a different pressure than playing New Jersey, where there’s no expectations of winning a championship right now out there.

“He can play freely, there’s not going to be a lot of whispering going on when he has bad games, like it was here in LA. So I think I think on both ends, it probably was good for both parties.

“It eases his mind where he can just kind of go out there and be free and play, and it gets Lakers some guys that who have already shown that they can come in here and be contributors.”

Russell said he was grateful to be traded to a familiar surroundings, which have no doubt made his transition to his new team a lot easier.

Maxwell Lewis suffered an early injury minutes into his Nets debut, but he too could thrive away from the LA pressure bubble.

Former LA Lakers head coach Byron Scott recently shared his thoughts on the team’s recent double deal, and he likes what he sees. The Lakers made headlines by acquiring both Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony in the offseason, and Scott believes the team made the right moves.

In an interview, Scott praised the addition of Westbrook, calling him a “game-changer” who will bring a new dynamic to the team’s offense. He also expressed excitement about the veteran leadership and scoring prowess that Anthony will bring to the Lakers.

Scott acknowledged that there may be some challenges in integrating two new star players into the lineup, but he believes that the talent and experience that Westbrook and Anthony bring will ultimately benefit the team.

Overall, Scott believes that the Lakers made a smart decision in making these moves and is optimistic about their chances in the upcoming season. Lakers fans can look forward to an exciting season ahead with these new additions to the team.
