  • Can BYU extend hot streak to four games vs. UCF? – Deseret News

The first team that plays defense probably wins.

No, that wasn’t BYU basketball coach Kevin Young’s Super Bowl prediction during his coaches show on Wednesday night.

Rather, the first-year skipper was referring to Saturday’s Big 12 showdown (2 p.m. MST, ESPN+) at UCF, which, like the Cougars, is one of the best offensive teams in the league, if not the country.

The Knights (13-7, 4-5) and Cougars (14-6, 5-4) clash at Addition Financial Arena in Orlando, Florida, for the first time this season, but for the fourth time the last two seasons.

The Land of Disney is also known as O-Town, and this year the “O” could stand for offense, Young said.

“They are as potent of an offensive team as there is probably in the country,” Young said. “They have got some guys who can really put the ball in the basket. They shoot a lot of 3s, play really fast, and so it will be a whoever-decides-to play-defense-first-probably-gets-the-win type of game.”

UCF’s high-powered offense starts with wing Keyshawn Hall, a 6-foot-7 junior from Cleveland who started his career at UNLV and played for George Mason last year. Hall is averaging 18.0 points in all games, and 21.4 in conference games, which leads the league.

“He is a handful,” Young said.

Then there’s 6-1 senior guard Darius Johnson, who gave the Cougars fits in three games last year, all BYU wins. Coincidentally, those BYU wins came on Jan. 13, Feb. 13 and March 13 by scores of 63-58 (Orlando), 90-88 (Provo) and 87-73 (Kansas City).

Johnson scored 18 in Orlando, 20 in Provo and 32 at the Big 12 Tournament, with six 3-pointers, against the Cougars. UCF’s other top scorer is Pacific transfer Jordan Ivy-Curry, who averages 14.5 points per game.

Of course, BYU has some outstanding offensive players as well, led by Richie Saunders (15.0), Egor Demin (11.2) and Trevin Knell (10.1).

Veteran UCF coach Johnny Dawkins said the Knights can’t let Saunders get free. The 6-5 junior has reached double figures in six straight games, including a 26-point outburst at TCU and a 25-point outburst at Colorado.

“They have got some guys who can really put the ball in the basket. They shoot a lot of 3s, play really fast, and so it will be a whoever-decides-to play-defense-first-probably-gets-the-win type of game.”

“We have to know where he is at all times. We have to have 10 eyes on him everywhere he is, because if you lose him for a split second, he has a shot off and it is up,” Dawkins said. “He is really good at a quick release. We need to make sure we know where he is at all times.”

BYU is averaging 81.0 points per game in all games, which is fourth in the Big 12; UCF is averaging 79.9 points, sixth in the Big 12.

In conference games only, UCF is averaging 78.7 points (third) and BYU is averaging 75.3 (sixth).

BYU is averaging a league-leading 10.5 3-pointers in conference games, while UCF is averaging 9.1 triples per league contest, which ranks fourth.

“I will put our group up against any team in the country in a 3-point shooting contest,” Young said. “But our defense will be really important in that game like it is any night, but especially against a high-powered offense like UCF has.”

The Knights obviously have the home-court advantage and have played well in Orlando after an inexplicable 99-48 loss to then-No. 7 Kansas at home on Jan. 5. On Jan. 18, UCF fell 69-68 at home to No. 6 Houston, which is the closest any Big 12 team has come to beating the Cougars.

If BYU has an advantage, it is that the Cougars are good at attacking the offensive glass and UCF is not good at defensive rebounding.

It is another Quad 1 opportunity for BYU, which is coming off a 93-89 overtime win over Baylor in Provo. The Cougars, who have a NET ranking of 36 (UCF is 62), flew to Florida on Thursday to give themselves a chance to get acclimated to the two-hour time difference.

Kenpom.com gives BYU a 51% chance to win.

“It is an important stretch for us,” Young said, alluding to a home game against Arizona on Tuesday, followed by a trip to Cincinnati and West Virginia after that. “Obviously, playing on the road anywhere is hard. There are some really quality teams (we play) on the road.”

It is also big for UCF, which walloped TCU 85-58 at home last week before falling 91-87 at Kansas. Dawkins has already started calling for UCF fans to fill their building, after BYU fans comprised about one-third of the fans at the arena last year.

“Our guys need to come out with the mindset that, hey we gotta take care of and defend our home court,” Dawkins said. “With that, we need our student section and Knight Nation to come out and give us the support that they have been giving us all year. I think we have had a good home-court environment in large part because of them. Their ability to come out and bring energy and enthusiasm has been amazing. So we need them again.”

Having won three straight, BYU finds itself tied for sixth in the conference with Baylor; UCF is tied for eighth with Utah and West Virginia.

“We are in a good spot. It kind of grinds the gears a little bit when you see the (standings), thinking about the one-possession games that didn’t go our way. But I think those games have helped us. I think they have helped us find ways to dig in,” Young said. “I think they will help us even more as we go through this thing. We just want to focus on the next game and just keep moving up those standings one game at a time.”

  • How To Watch BYU Basketball At UCF

BYU basketball takes on the UCF Knights in Big 12 Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Orlando.

Both teams are squarely on the “Bubble” for NCAA Tournament projections. A win for BYU could give the Cougars a coveted Quad One victory, while a win for UCF would provide a Quad Two victory on their resume.

BYU basketball comes into the game on a three-game winning streak and is 14-6 overall and 5-4 in Big 12 play. UCF squandered a nine-point second-half lead at Kansas in their last outing to fall 91-87 to the Jayhawks.

The Knights are 4-5 in Big 12 play, with all five losses coming against Top-15 teams in the KenPom ratings.

Saturday afternoon will be the fourth meeting all-time between the two programs. All of the previous three meetings occurred last year in their inaugural seasons in the Big 12.

BYU swept the three meetings last season, including a 63-58 win in Orlando, which was BYU’s first-ever Big 12 win.

  • KenPom Predicts BYU Basketball vs Baylor

On Tuesday night, Kevin Young and the BYU basketball program will be looking for their third consecutive win in conference play. The Baylor Bears come into town, fresh off a convincing win over Utah.

The Cougars are coming off back-to-back blowout wins over Colorado and Cincinnati. They host the Bears for a chance to be above .500 in conference play for the first time this season. BYU has looked like an entirely different team over the last week, placing an emphasis on up-tempo offense and cohesive defense. The result has been complete domination, particularly in the second half. BYU has outscored its last two opponents 97-60 in the second half. They will test their new-found offensive rhythm against much stiffer competition in Baylor on Tuesday night.

KenPom, the industry leader in predictive college basketball analytics, predicted BYU vs Baylor. KenPom gives BYU a 60% chance to win with an expected final score of 74-71.

ESPN BPI is less optimistic about BYU’s chances to win this game than KenPom. ESPN BPI gives BYU a 54% chance to beat Baylor.

Winning this game might come down to winning BYU’s ability to win its first close game of the season. With the loss to Utah last week, BYU moved to 0-4 in overtime games and games decided by five points or less.

Losing close games has been the headline of BYU’s season thus far. When BYU has won, they’ve won big. Every single win has come by double digits.

BYU needs to learn how to win a close game sooner rather than later. They might have their chance to do just that on Tuesday night against Baylor.

KenPom Predicts BYU Basketball vs Baylor: Who Will Come Out on Top?

According to KenPom’s advanced statistical analysis, the upcoming matchup between BYU Basketball and Baylor is expected to be a close and highly competitive game. Both teams have shown impressive performances so far this season, making this game one to watch for college basketball fans.

BYU has been led by their stellar offense, ranking among the top teams in the nation in points per game and effective field goal percentage. Their three-point shooting has been particularly impressive, with multiple players capable of knocking down shots from beyond the arc.

On the other hand, Baylor has been dominant on both ends of the court, boasting a top-tier defense that has stifled opponents and a balanced offense that can score in a variety of ways. Their depth and versatility make them a tough matchup for any team.

KenPom’s projections give a slight edge to Baylor in this matchup, but with BYU’s high-powered offense and the potential for an upset, anything can happen on game day. Be sure to tune in to see which team will come out on top in this exciting showdown.

Only one more half stands between BYU and the win they were favored to collect coming into this evening. They have jumped out to a quick 44-36 lead against Baylor.

If BYU keeps playing like this, they’ll bump their record up to 14-6 in no time. On the other hand, Baylor will have to make due with a 13-7 record unless they turn things around (and fast).

    What to Know

We’ve got another exciting Big 12 matchup on schedule as the Baylor Bears and the BYU Cougars are set to tip at 9:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Marriott Center. The Bears are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 79.9 points per game this season.

Baylor can’t be too worried about heading out to take on BYU: they just beat Utah at home, who had been dominant on their own court up to that point. Baylor enjoyed a cozy 76-61 victory over Utah on Saturday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Bears.

Among those leading the charge was Norchad Omier, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 12 rebounds. He had some trouble finding his footing against Kansas State on Wednesday, so this was a step in the right direction. The team also got some help courtesy of VJ Edgecombe, who earned 21 points plus six rebounds and two steals.

Baylor smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. The team’s really been improving in that area: they’ve now improved their offensive rebound total in three consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, BYU took their match on Saturday with ease, bagging an 80-52 win over Cincinnati. The Cougars have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine matchups by 19 points or more this season.

BYU relied on the efforts of Richie Saunders, who posted 21 points along with five rebounds, and Egor Demin, who had 15 points plus seven assists and five rebounds. What’s more, Demin also racked up three threes, the most he’s had since back in November of 2024.

Baylor’s victory bumped their record up to 13-6. As for BYU, they are on a roll lately: they’ve won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Baylor hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 79.9 points per game. However, it’s not like BYU struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 80.4. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

Baylor is hoping to beat the odds on Tuesday, as the experts think they’re headed for a loss. Bettors picking them against the spread have some confidence (to put it mildly), as the team is sitting on a five-game streak of failing to cover when playing as the underdog.

    Odds

BYU is a 3.5-point favorite against Baylor, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 3.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

    The over/under is 142.5 points.

    What to Know

We’ve got another exciting Big 12 matchup on schedule as the Cincinnati Bearcats and the BYU Cougars are set to tip at 10:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Marriott Center. The Bearcats’ defense has only allowed 61.7 points per game this season, so the Cougars’ offense will have their work cut out for them.

Last Tuesday, Cincinnati couldn’t handle Texas Tech and fell 81-71.

Despite the defeat, Cincinnati had strong showings from Dillon Mitchell, who went 5 for 8 en route to 12 points plus three blocks, and Jizzle James, who went 8 for 12 en route to 17 points. What’s more, James also posted a 66.7% field goal percentage, which is the highest he’s posted since back in November of 2024.

Cincinnati struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only three offensive rebounds. That’s the fewest offensive rebounds they’ve managed all season.

Colorado typically has all the answers at home, but on Tuesday BYU proved too difficult a challenge. They took down the Buffaloes 83-67.

Richie Saunders was the offensive standout of the game as he went 10 for 15 en route to 25 points plus five rebounds. Another player making a difference was Egor Demin, who posted eight points along with seven assists and four steals.

Cincinnati’s loss dropped their record down to 12-6. As for BYU, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 12-6.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Cincinnati has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 37 rebounds per game. However, it’s not like BYU struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 39.2. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.

Cincinnati is hoping to beat the odds on Saturday, as the experts think they’re headed for a loss. Against the spread, they have been a house darling this year with a chancy 7-11 ATS record.

    Odds

BYU is a solid 6.5-point favorite against Cincinnati, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The line has drifted a bit towards the Cougars, as the game opened with the Cougars as a 4.5-point favorite.

    The over/under is 136 points.

Cincinnati vs BYU College Basketball Betting Preview

I really like the Bearcats on Saturday.

For starters, this line seems way too high. All the major projection models make this line lower than seven, including KenPom (BYU -5), Bart Torvik (BYU -6), EvanMiya (BYU -4) and Haslametrics (BYU -2.5).

While BYU’s home court is strong, I think the situational spot favors Cincinnati. The Bearcats will be motivated to bounce back off a tough home loss to Texas Tech on Tuesday, while BYU could be due for a letdown loss after smashing Colorado by 20 in Boulder on the same night.

Most importantly, the schematic matchup heavily favors Cincinnati.

Despite Mark Pope bolting for Kentucky, BYU still runs similar offensive stuff. The Cougars run a dribble handoff zoom offense that runs shooters around on- and off-ball screens on the perimeter, hunting open catch-and-shoot opportunities.

They’ll likely have a brutal time running that offense against Cincinnati’s athletic, swarming drop-coverage defense that viciously denies catch-and-shoot opportunities while funneling opponents into on-ball, middle-of-the-floor creation.

BYU is very uncomfortable working off the bounce, and I’ve also seen the Cougars flounder against more physical competition (e.g., a 31-point loss to Houston).

On the other end of the court, Cincinnati is a woeful spacing-and-shooting team. The Bearcats are extremely dribble-reliant, running mainly downhill ball-screen actions with Jizzle James and Day Day Thomas.

BYU’s defense has regressed in conference play, mainly because the Cougars can’t stay in front of the dribble (.89 pick-and-roll ball-handler PPP allowed, ninth percentile, per Synergy).

While they’ve done a good job deploying a pack-line scheme that helps keep opponents away from the paint, their backcourt defenders are flat-footed and laterally slow, so I expect James and Thomas to beat their defenders off the bounce and fully unpack the pack line.

The real kicker is if Cincinnati could finally see some positive shooting regression. Yes, the Bearcats are a poor floor-spacing and catch-and-shoot creation offense, but they’ve shot just 26% from 3 in conference play, a wholly unsustainable mark.

Even with their lousy creation, ShotQuality projects the Cats should be shooting closer to 31% from 3, based on the “quality” of attempts.

Attack-and-kick offenses have blitzed BYU’s defense, which struggles to stop the dribble and equally struggles in rotations. The Bearcats could cook the Cougars if a few overdue triples fall.

I love the spot, I love the schematic matchup and I love the spread value. Let’s go Cats.

Cincinnati vs BYU Odds, Picks, Predictions for Saturday, January 25

The Cincinnati Bearcats will take on the BYU Cougars in a highly anticipated college basketball matchup on Saturday, January 25. Both teams have shown flashes of brilliance this season and will be looking to secure a crucial win in this non-conference showdown.

According to the latest odds, BYU is favored to win this game with a spread of -4.5 points. The over/under for total points scored is set at 140.5.

In terms of picks and predictions, BYU has been playing some outstanding basketball as of late and has a strong home-court advantage. The Cougars have a balanced offensive attack led by star guard Alex Barcello, who is averaging over 15 points per game. Cincinnati, on the other hand, has struggled on the road this season and will face a tough challenge against a talented BYU team.

I predict that BYU will come out on top in this game, covering the spread and hitting the over on total points scored. Look for Barcello to have a big game and lead the Cougars to a statement victory.

Don’t miss out on what promises to be an exciting and competitive matchup between two talented teams. Tune in on Saturday to see who comes out on top in this Cincinnati vs BYU showdown.

  • KenPom Predicts BYU Basketball vs Cincinnati in Critical Conference Matchup

On Tuesday, Kevin Young and the BYU basketball program used a dominant second half to beat Colorado. That win was the first road win for BYU this season and it came at an important time. Now the Cougars are 3-4 in conference play and looking to get back to .500 on Saturday night against Cincinnati. The Bearcats are 2-5 in conference play and coming off a road loss against Texas Tech.

KenPom, the industry leader in predictive college basketball analytics, predicted BYU vs Cincinnati. KenPom gives BYU a 67% chance to win with an expected final score of 70-65.

ESPN BPI is slightly less optimistic about BYU’s chances to win this game and get to 4-4 in conference play. ESPN BPI gives BYU a 64% chance to beat Cincinnati.

They might have their chance to do just that on Saturday night against Cincinnati.

KenPom Predicts BYU Basketball vs Cincinnati in Critical Conference Matchup

According to the latest KenPom rankings, the BYU basketball team will face off against Cincinnati in a crucial conference matchup. Both teams are currently jockeying for position in their respective conferences and a win in this game could have major implications for their postseason hopes.

KenPom, a respected college basketball analytics website, has predicted a close and competitive game between these two evenly matched teams. The BYU Cougars are currently ranked slightly higher in the KenPom rankings, but the Cincinnati Bearcats are known for their tough defense and ability to grind out wins.

This game is shaping up to be a must-watch showdown between two talented teams with a lot on the line. Fans can expect a high-energy game with plenty of drama and excitement. Be sure to tune in and see if KenPom’s prediction holds true as BYU takes on Cincinnati in this critical conference matchup.

  • BYU Basketball Looks To Keep Momentum Against Cincinnati

PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball returns home to host the Cincinnati Bearcats after a two-game road trip.

The Cougars are riding high after a breakthrough road win at Colorado earlier in the week. Conversely, Cincinnati is coming into the game after suffering a home loss to Texas Tech.

BYU is 3-4 in Big 12 play, while Cincinnati has a 2-5 conference record.

It’s a critical game for both teams.

Last year, Cincinnati and BYU squared off in their Big 12 debuts, and the Bearcats pulled off a road upset in Provo after trailing the Cougars by seven at the half.

Richie Saunders is playing at an All-Big 12 level

BYU junior wing Richie Saunders is making a strong argument to be an All-Conference performer in the Big 12 this season.

Saunders scored 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field in the win at Colorado. It was the fourth consecutive game where Saunders had scored at least 12 points.

During Big 12 play, Saunders has scored at least 25 points three times.

After the win over Colorado, Buffs head coach Tad Boyle felt Saunders was an All-Conference player.

Cincinnati head coach Wes Miller gave similar praise to Saunders earlier this week when addressing the media.

“Saunders is so aggressive on the catch. That’s what I’ve seen,” Cincinnati coach Wes Miller said. “He does a great job of attacking closeouts and straight-line driving and his floater has become so dynamic. He’s always had a lot of game; he can shoot the ball.”

Saunders is fourth in Big 12 play in scoring at 17.7 points per game, second in field goal percentage (55.7%), and first in 3-point field goal percentage (46.3%).

    Trends for BYU basketball

    • In BYU’s three Big 12 victories this season, they hit at least 10 three-pointers. BYU’s four losses in league play all finished with fewer than 10 makes from beyond the arc.
    • BYU’s tempo has climbed from 16th in the Big 12 to 12th in KenPom tempo metrics since the loss at TCU two weeks ago. The pace of play has improved for BYU over the past three games.
    • BYU is 6-1 in games where Egor Demin dishes out at least seven assists.
    • The Cougars are 5-2 in games where Dallin Hall knocks down at least two field goals.

Getting to Know the Cincinnati Bearcats

The Bearcats entered this season as a preseason AP Top 25 squad after retaining most of their roster from last season.

Dan Skillings leads Cincinnati in scoring during Big 12 play, averaging 12.9 points per game. However, scoring has been challenging for the Bearcats.

Cincinnati has scored over 70 points in only one game this season, earlier this week in the loss to Texas Tech, when they scored 71. The Bearcats are last in the Big 12 in scoring at 61.1.

Cincinnati is fifth in the league on defense, allowing 66.7 points.

Wes Miller’s squad boasts the nation’s sixth-best three-point defense, allowing teams to only hit 28% from beyond the arc.

A player to watch for Cincinnati is graduate senior center Aziz Bandaogo. The former Utah Valley transfer is 2-0 in games played at the Marriott Center.

Wes Miller said earlier this week that Bandaogo is probably not 100%, considering what he has dealt with in the past with his back.

Last season, Bandaogo scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds off the bench in the upset win at BYU.

Jizzle James, the son of former NFL star Edgerrin James, had a big game last year in a reserve role, scoring another 12 points. He’s now leading the Bearcats in assists with 4.1.

Another familiar face is Dillon Mitchell, Cincinnati’s leading rebounder. Mitchell didn’t play in Cincinnati’s win at BYU last year; instead, he was with another Big 12 team, the Texas Longhorns, a season ago.

Dillon Mitchell is averaging 6.6 rebounds per game and a team-leading 1.6 steals.

BYU Basketball Looks To Keep Momentum Against Cincinnati

After a convincing win against Oregon in the Maui Invitational, the BYU basketball team is gearing up to face off against Cincinnati in their next matchup. With a 5-1 record so far this season, the Cougars are looking to keep their momentum going and secure another impressive victory.

The team has been firing on all cylinders, with standout performances from leading scorers Alex Barcello and Caleb Lohner. Their strong defense and efficient offense have proven to be a winning combination, and they will need to continue playing at a high level to overcome the tough competition that Cincinnati presents.

Facing off against a solid Cincinnati team, BYU will need to bring their A-game and execute their game plan to perfection. The Bearcats are known for their tough defense and physical style of play, so the Cougars will need to be prepared for a gritty battle on the court.

With their eyes set on a successful season, BYU is focused on taking it one game at a time and continuing to build upon their early success. Fans can expect an exciting matchup as the Cougars look to keep their momentum rolling against Cincinnati. Stay tuned for what promises to be a thrilling game of college basketball.

  • What BYU being a conference opponent again means to Utah – Deseret News

Like several other Utah Utes sports teams before it have already experienced, the Utah women’s basketball program will get its first taste of facing rival BYU as a Big 12 foe on Saturday.

This one comes at the Marriott Center, as the Utes travel to Provo for an afternoon tilt (2:30 p.m. MST, ESPNU).

The rivalry is a familiar one to players like Gianna Kneepkens and Jenna Johnson, as well as head coach Gavin Petersen.

This will be the fourth time both Kneepkens and Johnson have played BYU — the pair have a 2-1 record against the Cougars.

Petersen, who spent the previous nine years at Utah as an assistant, is heading into his first matchup as the Utes’ head coach.

This will be the first year, though, that all three have the experience of facing BYU twice in a year, as fellow Big 12 schools. The Utes will host the Cougars on March 1 in the regular-season finale.

Kneepkens, who said she’s looking forward to facing BYU twice now that the schools are in the same conference again, lit up when talking about her team’s next opponent after the Utes beat Kansas on Wednesday.

“I think rivalry games are the best, just because a lot of people come out for them, the environment’s great, they’re always good games,” she said.

Kneepkens pointed to the atmosphere at Utah’s 73-72 victory over BYU when the men’s teams played at the Huntsman Center last Saturday as evidence for just how enjoyable the rivalry can be.

“Like we saw with our men’s game this weekend, just in a great environment, playing high-level basketball against the team that’s 40 minutes away is going to be a lot of fun, so I’m looking forward to it,” Kneepkens said.

Johnson is expecting to get BYU’s best shot, even if the Cougars are coming in on a three-game losing streak and are 1-6 in Big 12 play.

“I think in big rivalry games and stuff, you get that team’s best shot, and we’re going to bring the same,” Johnson said. “I think that’s just what I’m looking forward to, is competing hard and knowing that we’re going to get BYU’s best.”

There’s a workmanlike mentality to Utah’s approach, echoed from both coaches and players.

“We’ll prepare the same. We’re gonna get after it and be prepared and take the bus down there and go to work,” Petersen said.

Utah Utes head coach Gavin Petersen calls out to his players during game against Arizona State University held at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024. Saturday’s game at BYU will be Peterson’s first taste of the rivalry as the Utes’ head coach. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News

Utah is coming off a 79-61 victory over Kansas, where both Kneepkens and Johnson were chasing a triple-double that fell just short.

Kneepkens ended up scoring a career-high 30 points, while adding 10 rebounds and eight assists.

Johnson put up 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, as the Utes built a 16-point lead after one quarter and played even with the Jayhawks after that.

The Cougars, meanwhile, are struggling under third-year coach Amber Whiting. Since Big 12 play began, their only win has come against Houston, and BYU will be decided underdogs with Utah coming to town.

The Utes have won the past two games in the series, beating BYU 76-59 in Provo two years ago and 87-68 last season in Salt Lake City, though that victory had a sour note for Utah, as Kneepkens broke her foot late in the game and was lost for the season.

Petersen recalled his thoughts toward the rivalry when he first arrived with former Utah head coach Lynne Roberts at Utah a decade ago.

“When we got here, I still remember that first year, I just was so into it, and then I was like, why? Why are you so intense? And it’s just all the fans and everybody,” he said.

“I was able to, you know, with my older age, step back and be like, it’s one game. It’s one game.”

With it being a conference matchup now, there is a bit more added significance, though the approach doesn’t change.

“Well, now it’s not just one game — it actually means something in the conference standings, so I’m gonna have to remind myself, like, yes, it is a rivalry, but at the end of the day, it’s still one game. And always, our mission is to go 1-0, no matter who it is,” Petersen said.

As a longtime rival, the return of BYU as a conference opponent for the University of Utah is a monumental occasion for both schools and their passionate fan bases. The Deseret News explores what this matchup means for the Utes and the implications it has on the landscape of college football.

For Utah, facing off against BYU brings a renewed sense of excitement and intensity to their schedule. The rivalry between these two teams runs deep, with a history of close games and memorable moments that have left a lasting impact on both programs. The opportunity to once again go head-to-head with their longtime foe is a chance for the Utes to prove their dominance and assert their place as a top contender in the conference.

But beyond the on-field competition, the return of BYU as a conference opponent signifies a shift in the dynamics of college football in the state of Utah. With both teams now competing in the same conference, the stakes are higher and the pressure to perform is greater. Every game against BYU becomes a crucial battle for bragging rights and a chance to assert dominance in the state.

  • How to watch Utah Utes vs. BYU Cougars women’s basketball on TV, streaming

In the past, Gavin Petersen has tried to limit his intensity and excitement for his team’s biggest rivalry.

“It’s one game,” he’d tell himself and his players.

But this year, Petersen knows, the meeting between the Utah women’s basketball team and the BYU Cougars means more.

“Now it’s not just one game,” the Ute coach said. “It actually means something with conference standings.”

Utah and BYU will face off as members of the Big 12 Conference on Saturday afternoon in Provo with plenty on the line — from local bragging rights to positioning down the road in the conference tournament.

“I think rivalry games are the best,” said Utah guard Gianna Kneepkens, who is averaging 18.1 points per game for the 14-5 Utes. “Lots of people come out for them. They’re always good games. Like we saw with our men’s teams last weekend, it’s a great environment. Playing high-level basketball against a team that’s 40 minutes away is going to be a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to it.”

The Cougars are 10-8 and just 1-6 in conference play. But star freshman Delany Gibb (16.1 points per game) should have BYU ready for a matchup in the Marriott Center.

“In big rivalry games, you get that team’s best shot and we’re going to bring the same,” Utah forward Jenna Johnson said. “That’s what I’m looking forward to, competing hard and knowing we’re going to get BYU’s best.”

    Kennady McQueen update

The Utes will likely be missing one key piece when they take the court in Provo.

Guard Kennady McQueen is making progress as she returns from a high ankle sprain, but isn’t expected to be ready to play this weekend.

“She’s working closer and closer to returning to the court,” Petersen said earlier this week.

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Utes guard Kennady McQueen (24) as Utah hosts Arizona State, NCAA basketball in Salt Lake City on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024.

The coach hoped to have McQueen doing some contact and five-on-five work in practice ahead of the game.

“But at the end of the day, we’re not going to push her,” Petersen said. “There’s so much season left. I know she wants to play this weekend, being a kid from Utah. But sometimes you have to protect the players from themselves. But she’s just been working really hard to get back. I’m just proud of the way she’s attacked it. When she’s ready she’s ready, but it’s getting closer.”
