The reigning national runner up California women’s water polo team is set to kick off the 2025 season this weekend at the Fresno State Polo-Palooza. This will be the third straight year the Golden Bears begin their season at the Fresno Aquatics Center. Just as it did last year, Cal will face three top-18 opponents and end the weekend with an exhibition with No. 5 Hawai’i at 10:20 a.m. PT on Sunday in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Championship semifinal.

    BEAR NECESSITIES

    2024 RECAP

Boasting the nation’s best defense throughout the year, Cal finished as the runner-up in both the NCAA and MPSF Championships, advancing to the NCAA Championship final for the second time in program history. The Bears posted their second straight 19-win season, going 19-7 (.731), good for their highest win percentage since 2018. At the heart of their success was the play of graduated senior goalkeeper Isabel Williams, who set the team’s all-time career saves record on her way to becoming the first Bear in program history to win the prestigious Peter J. Cutino Award, given to the top player in the NCAA.

    NET FINDERS

Although the Bears also graduated their top scorer from last year, Maryn Dempsey – who is currently scoring goals for Team USA in the group stage of the 2025 World Cup – the team returns a bulk of its offensive contributors. Senior Elena Flynn finished second on the team with 44 goals in a dazzling debut season after transferring from UC Irvine, resulting in a third consecutive All-America selection. Sophomore Feline Voordouw poured in 31 goals in a standout freshman campaign.

The season-opening tournament also marks the return of two-time All-American Ruby Swadling, who missed the 2024 season to train for the Australia National Team.

    PAN-AM GOLD

Sophomore Julia Bonaguidi – another standout from Cal’s 2024 freshman class – competed alongside current freshman Rosalie Hassett for Team USA in the 2024 Pan-American Championships in November, putting away seven and six goals, respectively, on their way to an 18-5 win over Argentina in the final. They became the first Bears to win gold at the tournament since current Cal assistant coach Heather Petri and Elsie Windes in 2011.

    HALL OF FAME COACHING STAFF

Cal head coach Coralie Simmons and associate head coach Heather Petri are among the most decorated figures in the sport. Simmons – one of the great trailblazers of the women’s water polo world who earned two NCAA Player of the Year awards while competing for UCLA, won three NCAA Championships and an Olympic silver medal with Team USA – was one of five members in the 39th induction class of the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame in 2023. Her 131 wins at Cal rank second in program history. Last May, she became the first female head coach in NCAA history to reach the NCAA championship game. Petri – the only four-time female Olympian in Cal history – was named to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2023. Joining them on the staff for the fourth straight year is assistant coach Lance Morrison, who played Division I water polo at Pacific.

  • Pitt Panthers G Out With Injury vs. Cal

Pitt Panthers G Out With Injury vs. Cal

PITTSBURGH — The Pitt Panthers will not have one of their top players, as they start 2025 and the rest of their ACC schedule against Cal on New Year’s Day at the Petersen Events Center.

The Panthers announced that senior guard Ishmael Leggett is out with injury vs. the Golden Bears with a lower body injury.

Leggett played his first three seasons of college basketball with Rhode Island, with 71 starts in 88 contests. He averaged 27.3 minutes, 10.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game, while also shooting 39.3% from the field, 33.2% from 3-point range and 78.1% from the foul line.

His best season with the Rams came in 2021-22, when he averaged 34.6 minutes, 16.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 2.3 assists per game. He also shot 38.7% from the field, 31.8% from behind the arc and 84.2% from the free throw line.

Leggett had a fantastic junior year with the Panthers, winning the 2023-24 ACC Sixth Man of the Year Award. He played in all 32 games, but started just 14, coming off the bench for the final two months of the season, allowing him to earn that honor.

He averaged 12.3 points and 1.9 assists per game led the Panthers with 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game, while also shooting 42.7% from the field, 34.9% from 3-point range and 85.9% from the foul line last season.

Leggett earned preseason All-ACC Second Team honors heading into this season and has had another great campaign for the program.

He leads the team with 17.5 points per game and ranks second with 33.5 minutes played, 6.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He is also shooting 51.3% from the field, 32.7% from 3-point range and 74.5% from the foul line.

This will serve as the first game that Leggett has missed this season and just the second he’s missed the Panthers in his two seasons with the program.

Pitt will now have two of their guards out vs. Cal, as graduate student guard Damian Dunn has missed the last five games after undergoing surgery on his right thumb, after injuring it against Wisconsin in the Greenbrier Tip-Off back on Nov. 24.

Both Dunn and Leggett were on the bench dressed in street clothes during warm-ups ahead of the Cal matchup.

  • Pitt Guard Ishmael Leggett to Miss Cal Game

Pitt Guard Ishmael Leggett to Miss Cal Game

Ishmael Leggett will miss Pitt’s game against Cal on Wednesday due to a lower-body injury, the team announced more than an hour before the game.

Leggett is a 6-foot-3 senior guard, who is leading the team in scoring at 17.5 points per game. The DMV native has been superb this season in his second campaign with the Pitt program. He is averaging 6.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, as well. Leggett is shooting a career-high 51% from the field and is shooting 33% from three-point range as well.

He averaged 12.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game last year in his first year as a Panther. He scored in double figures in each of his first 11 games at Pitt, before going on a five-game streak of not reaching that mark. As Jaland Lowe’s role increased to the point of becoming a starter alongside Bub Carrington for Pitt, Leggett shifted to a sixth-man role, coming off the bench.

He shined in the role that Jeff Capel described as the “sixth starter,” and was recognized with the ACC’s Sixth Man of the Year award following the season.

Leggett began his career at Rhode Island, playing in the Atlantic 10. After averaging 6.6 points per game as a rookie, he increased his statistics in each major category in each of the next two seasons with the Rams. In his third year in the program, he starred for the team, averaging 16.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game — all of which were career highs.

Stay tuned for more updates live from the Petersen Events Center from Wednesday’s game.

Pittsburgh guard Ishmael Leggett will be sidelined for the upcoming game against California due to a lingering injury. Leggett, who has been a key player for the Panthers this season, will be greatly missed on the court.

Despite this setback, the team is confident in their depth and ability to step up in Leggett’s absence. They are determined to come together and secure a victory in his honor.

We wish Ishmael Leggett a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the court soon. In the meantime, let’s show our support for the Panthers as they face off against California. #GetWellSoonIshmael #GoPanthers

How to watch Cal Baptist Lancers vs. UC Irvine Anteaters: Live stream, TV channel, start time for Monday’s NCAA Basketball game

    Halftime Report

Cal Baptist is giving their home crowd exactly what they were hoping for. They have jumped out to a quick 29-25 lead against UC Irvine.

If Cal Baptist keeps playing like this, they’ll bump their record up to 8-6 in no time. On the other hand, UC Irvine will have to make due with a 10-3 record unless they turn things around (and fast).

    Who’s Playing

UC Irvine Anteaters @ Cal Baptist Lancers

Current Records: UC Irvine 10-2, Cal Baptist 7-6

    How To Watch

    What to Know

The UC Irvine Anteaters’ road trip will continue as they head out to face the Cal Baptist Lancers at 10:00 p.m. ET on Monday at Fowler Events Center. The Anteaters’ defense has only allowed 63.1 points per game this season, so the Lancers’ offense will have their work cut out for them.

UC Irvine is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 92 points last Thursday, they were much more limited against Duquesne last Saturday. They took a hard 70-54 fall against the Dukes. The Anteaters didn’t live up to their potential and found themselves falling short of the advantage oddsmakers thought they had coming into the game.

Even though they lost, UC Irvine smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Duquesne only pulled down seven.

Meanwhile, Cal Baptist earned a 79-73 win over Jackson State on Saturday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Lancers.

UC Irvine’s loss dropped their record down to 10-2. As for Cal Baptist, they now have a winning record of 7-6.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: UC Irvine has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 38.5 rebounds per game. However, it’s not like Cal Baptist struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 36.6. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.

As for their next game, UC Irvine is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 4.5 points. Those brave souls putting their money on Cal Baptist against the spread have faith in an upset since their 4-9 ATS record can’t hold a candle to UC Irvine’s 8-3.

    Odds

UC Irvine is a 4.5-point favorite against Cal Baptist, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Anteaters as a 4-point favorite.

    The over/under is 142.5 points.
