Detroit Lions listed as potential landing spot for DT Calais Campbell

Veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell could be suiting up for the Miami Dolphins for the final time Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

According to the Miami Herald, there is a growing expectation Campbell will be waived when the Dolphins are officially eliminated from postseason contention.

The Detroit Lions’ defense could benefit from the addition of another experienced veteran along the defensive line, as they continue their pursuit of their first-ever Super Bowl appearance and win.

As writer Omar Kelly explained, “Campbell and the Dolphins have discussed his release, which would need to happen before next week’s season finale, giving him an opportunity to latch on to a team competing for the Super Bowl. The Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings are also expected to be interested, and might put in a waiver claim to strengthen their cause, and prevent a front runner like the Chiefs from adding the defensive lineman who ranks third in active sacks.”

Campbell, 38, has recorded four sacks, 46 tackles, five pass breakups and one forced fumble for the 7-8 Dolphins. He has appeared in two Super Bowls, but is still chasing the elusive Lombardi Trophy.

“My whole career I’ve been close, but no cigar,” said Campbell. “I want that cigar.”

Unfortunately, Detroit still remains lower on the waiver wire than teams that could also benefit from Campbell’s services, including the Ravens.

The Detroit Lions have been listed as a potential landing spot for veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell. The 35-year-old free agent has spent the last two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, where he has been a key contributor on their defensive line.

Campbell, a five-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro selection, would bring a wealth of experience and leadership to a Lions defense that is in need of a playmaker up front. With his ability to disrupt the passing game and stop the run, Campbell could be a valuable addition to a Detroit team looking to improve on last season’s 5-11 record.

While there are sure to be other teams vying for Campbell’s services, the Lions could be an attractive destination for the veteran lineman. With a new coaching staff in place and a roster that is in need of upgrades on defense, Campbell could be the missing piece that helps the Lions take a step forward in the competitive NFC North.

Stay tuned for updates on where Calais Campbell ultimately lands in free agency, as the Detroit Lions remain a potential destination for the talented defensive tackle.

  • If eliminated, the Dolphins are expected to release Calais Campbell

If eliminated, the Dolphins are expected to release Calais Campbell

The Dolphins could be eliminated from playoff contention as soon as today, if both the Chargers beat the Patriots and the Broncos beat the Bengals.

If that happens — or if the Dolphins lose to the Browns on Sunday — Miami will be eliminated. And, as explained by Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins are expected to release veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell.

Campbell, who has spoken about the possibility of being released once the Dolphins are done, would go through waivers. Any other team, contender or non-contender, would have the ability to claim him for the final week of the regular season and perhaps beyond. If unclaimed, Campbell would become a free agent.

Kelly explains that the Ravens wanted to trade for Campbell before the deadline in early November, but that coach Mike McDaniel persuaded Campbell to stick around, with the understanding that he’d be released if/when the team’s playoff chances have ended.

The Ravens would presumably be on the short list to make a claim. Kelly notes that the Vikings and Lions are also expected to be interested. Also, if the goal is to win a championship, the Chiefs could be the best destination.

“My whole career I’ve been close, but no cigar,” Campbell said, via Kelly. “I want that cigar.”

Things will get awkward if Miami’s thin playoff hopes remain alive beyond this weekend. It will be hard for Campbell to bail on a team that still has a chance to make it to the playoffs — even if they don’t make it or, if they do, they lose in the wild-card round. (Again.) And since Miami’s roster locks as soon as its season ends, he can’t be released if the team is eliminated in Week 18.

It becomes an interesting subplot to the final two weekends of the 2024 regular season. Especially since, if Miami is cooked come Monday, it only takes one non-playoff team to slip Campbell an exploding cigar by claiming his contract on waivers.

The Miami Dolphins are facing a tough decision if they are eliminated from playoff contention – whether or not to release veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell. Campbell, who has been a key player on the Dolphins’ defense for the past few seasons, is set to count a significant amount against the team’s salary cap next year.

While Campbell has been a productive player for the Dolphins, his age and declining performance have raised questions about his future with the team. If the Dolphins miss the playoffs, it is expected that they will part ways with Campbell in order to free up cap space and potentially bring in younger, more cost-effective talent.

The decision to release Campbell would not be an easy one for the Dolphins, as he has been a leader both on and off the field. However, in the NFL, tough decisions must be made in order to build a successful team for the future.

Stay tuned to see what the Dolphins ultimately decide to do with Calais Campbell if they are eliminated from playoff contention.
