  • Is Mizzou’s Caleb Grill the nation’s best shooter?

    Missouri vs. Lindenwood

Missouri guard Caleb Grill drives to the basket against Lindenwood earlier this season at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Flipping a coin and it coming up heads. Rolling a die and getting an even number. Caleb Grill shooting from behind the 3-point line and making it. All three things have, more or less, a 50% chance of happening.

For the sake of accuracy, a Grill 3-pointer going in has a little bit less than a 50% chance of happening: He’s made 43 of his 89 shots from beyond the arc this season, which is a 48.3% clip.

But that’s about the only way you can minimize what Grill, the Missouri guard who leads the nation in 3-point shooting this season, is up to.

He now has a claim to the title of best shooter in men’s college hoops.

The No. 20 Tigers (16-4, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) are happy that they have a super-sub who heats up like a Weber and doesn’t put up any Big Green Eggs in the scoring column. MU coach Dennis Gates takes pleasure in the fact that his first substitution in most games means he’s bringing the Grill to the party.

“I’m just thankful he’s representing us and we’re not playing against a kid like that,” Gates said.

Grill is in the midst of a remarkable comeback season after losing most of the 2023-24 campaign to a wrist injury. After transferring from Iowa State, the guard’s jumper had yet to settle into a groove, and then a tumble to the floor on a dunk led to wrist surgery and a rollercoaster of a recovery.

For at least a few moments, it looked like Grill might lose this season, too — he was stretchered off the court during a November game and spent the next month out of commission while wearing a neck brace on the bench.

But those injuries aren’t the defining tones of his season, which has mostly involved swishing and splashing 3-pointers.

Major stats sites now list Grill atop the Division I standings in 3-point shooting with that 48.3% mark. Some players, of course, have higher rates but far less volume than Grill. Take Mizzou center Josh Gray, for example, who’s shooting 100% from 3 because he has taken and made exactly one shot from deep.

Grill shoots 5.9 3-pointers a game, which is heavy but not outlandish volume — exactly 200 players in the nation take more. Yet there are only 50 players who make more than his 2.9 per game — it’s the efficiency that makes Grill stand out.

So in that sense, it’s establishing a requisite sample size that really determines whether Grill is the nation’s best 3-point shooter. KenPom sets the bar at playing 40% of a team’s minutes and taking two shots a game. With that generous threshold, 11 players qualify ahead of Grill as better 3-point shooters.

Construct a stricter filter for shooting — like taking 15 3s per 100 on-court possessions, and Grill is back at the top. Those who shoot as often as he does just don’t make their 3s at the same rate.

There’s an analytics argument in Grill’s favor, too. It centers around a statistic called true shooting percentage, or TS% for short.

True shooting percentage is meant to be better than basketball’s slash line of field goal percentage, 3-point percentage and free-throw percentage by folding them into one number. The formula is more complex than is worth explaining here, but it accounts for shots from the field and free throws to, in theory, determine which players are the most efficient shooters.

Grill is fourth in the country in true shooting percentage, at 72.3%. Still, you can make an argument that his sitting fourth proves he’s actually the best.

For all of its benevolent intent, TS% tends to favor big men who take high-percentage shots at the rim and make their free throws — the stat doesn’t account for the value difference between a made layup and a made 3.

Of the top 15 active NBA players in true shooting, only two are guards — the Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry and James Harden, currently of the Los Angeles Clippers. The other 13 are forwards and centers.

In college this season, the three players ahead of Grill in true shooting are all bigs: Wichita State’s Quincy Ballard, Louisiana Tech’s Daniel Batcho and UMass Lowell’s Max Brooks. Collectively, that trio has attempted six 3-pointers this season — zero, two and four respectively.

Grill has attempted more than six 3s in a game seven times this season. For him to compete in an efficiency metric with players relying on far “easier” shots is impressive — no other player who relies on shooting more than finishing is better than Grill in true shooting percentage.

His shot-making matters a whole lot to a Missouri team on a path to a solid finish in the hypertalented SEC and a bid in the NCAA Tournament. Just look at Grill’s 8-10 outing from 3-point land against Eastern Washington or the 25 points he scored on 5-of-9 shooting over the weekend to sink Mississippi.

Gates credits Grill’s 3-point prowess to the veteran guard’s ability to move around the floor without the ball, his teammates’ ability to feed him the ball and a quick release that makes beating closeouts a routine act.

“Now, let’s take nothing away from Caleb Grill,” Gates said. “His talent is his talent. But his toughness — he has a mental toughness about him, a belief and confidence about him that resonates no matter the situation.”

And whether Grill is the best shooter in the nation or merely very close to earning that title, he’s not just a shooter for the Tigers either. Look at his 3.4 rebounds per game and 1.5 steals per game, for example.

“His game isn’t just on the offensive end,” Gates said. “He rebounds, he gets extra basketball opportunities, he throws his body around and he’s just as physical as he is from his position. … He’s a talented young man, and I’m thankful he’s in our lives.”

Is Mizzou’s Caleb Grill the nation’s best shooter?

Caleb Grill has been on fire this season for the Missouri Tigers, showcasing his elite shooting ability game after game. With a smooth stroke and deadly accuracy from beyond the arc, Grill has quickly become a fan favorite and a nightmare for opposing defenses.

But is he the best shooter in the nation?

Many would argue that Grill’s shooting prowess is second to none, as he currently ranks among the top shooters in the country in terms of three-point percentage and overall field goal percentage. His ability to knock down shots in clutch moments and create his own shot off the dribble sets him apart from other sharpshooters in college basketball.

While there are certainly other talented shooters across the country, it’s hard to deny the impact that Caleb Grill has had on the Mizzou Tigers this season. Whether he’s draining threes from deep or pulling up for mid-range jumpers, Grill has proven time and time again that he is a force to be reckoned with.

So, is Caleb Grill the nation’s best shooter? The stats certainly make a strong case for it. But regardless of where he ranks among the nation’s top shooters, one thing is for certain – Caleb Grill is a player to watch and a threat from anywhere on the court.

  • Caleb Wilson secretly committed to North Carolina over Kentucky in December

The Kentucky Wildcats have been able to gain commitments from big names like Malachi Moreno and Jasper Johnson. However, they barely missed out on Caleb Wilson, who is one of the premier players of the class of 2025.

Both Johnson and Moreno rank between 20 and 30 in the upcoming recruiting class, per 247 Sports. Wilson is a fringe top-10 player, currently at No. 9. For a long time, he had Kentucky on his radar, and it all came down to the Cats against the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Unfortunately, the 5-star talent took the latter and will be playing the majority of his college games in Chapel Hill. That was expected to happen for the last week after momentum seemingly shifted to the Tar Heels.

However, the reality is momentum in favor of UNC long before that. According to 247 Sports’ Travis Branham, Wilson had his mind made up for over a month.

Wilson is playing for Holy Innocents Episcopal School out of Atlanta, so he didn’t necessarily have many ties with North Carolina or Kentucky.

That said, as a senior, Wilson is averaging 18.9 points and hauling down 11.3 rebounds per game in 27 minutes of action, per MaxPreps. He’s been a star at the high school level and is expected to make that jump to the college ranks fairly easily.

As for the Wildcats, they’ll have to look elsewhere for a standout forward to add to the 2025-26 basketball roster.

    On to the next one.

In a surprising turn of events, tight end Caleb Wilson has reportedly committed to the University of North Carolina over the University of Kentucky. Despite being heavily recruited by both schools, Wilson ultimately made the decision to secretly commit to the Tar Heels in December.

This news comes as a shock to many, as Wilson was believed to be leaning towards Kentucky for quite some time. However, it seems that the allure of playing for UNC’s prestigious football program and potentially making a big impact on the team swayed Wilson in the end.

With Wilson’s commitment, North Carolina gains a talented and versatile player who is sure to make a significant contribution to the team. It will be interesting to see how Wilson’s decision plays out and how he will thrive in his new college football home.

  • Top-10 prospect Caleb Wilson commits to UNC over Kentucky

Top-10 senior Caleb Wilson, one of the highest-ranked uncommitted prospects remaining in the 2025 class, announced Thursday he has chosen to attend North Carolina over Kentucky.

Wilson, No. 6 in the ESPN 100, also included Ohio State in his final three schools.

“I picked North Carolina because of their culture and the history of the program,” Wilson told ESPN. “They were my first blue blood [offer]. Last year I went to the Duke at UNC game. I was courtside and it was a great experience. It was everything I was looking for in a program.”

The 6-foot-9 Wilson had a long, drawn-out recruitment with several schools looking like the favorites along the way. John Calipari made Wilson a priority early on while he was at Kentucky, and then continued to pursue him once he moved to Arkansas. As Wilson’s recruitment progressed, though, Kentucky and North Carolina moved into the top tier, while the likes of Tennessee, UCF, Georgia Tech and others faded.

The Wildcats and Tar Heels seemed to go back and forth in recent weeks, but UNC coach Hubert Davis was able to close his first five-star recruit of the cycle. It’s a critical recruiting win for Davis, who had previously missed on top targets A.J. Dybantsa (No. 1), Braylon Mullins (No. 25) and others.

“I love the passion and energy of coach Hubert Davis,” Wilson said. “I know he will push me to be my best and love me at the same time. He is a truth teller, and that’s what I want. We have watched film together. He tells me where I can be better. He is a man of faith, and we have a great connection. He plays his freshmen, too. I plan to help UNC win and win big. Then hopefully I can have a chance to be a one-and-done.”

Wilson has been considered one of the elite frontcourt prospects in the 2025 class for the past couple of years. He averaged 15.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists on the Nike EYBL circuit as a junior, then followed it up by teaming up with Cameron Boozer and Cayden Boozer on Nightrydas Elite to win a Peach Jam championship last summer. He was terrific at the Peach Jam, averaging 17.3 points and 7.0 rebounds in eight games while shooting 62% from the field.

Wilson’s most evident attributes are his length, explosiveness and vertical bounce with a quick second jump. His ball skills in both transition and the half court have improved over the past year, while his agility to move in any direction is a big asset and has enhanced his ability to score inside a crowded paint. He’s effective as an off-ball cutter because of his footwork, quickness and movement. What makes him a matchup problem is his ability to step out and make 3s and handle the ball to keep defenses honest, while also growing as a willing passer with vision. At the other end of the floor, Wilson is a switchable defender who can stay in front of the ball or defend the low post.

The Tar Heels now have three ESPN 100 prospects in their 2025 recruiting class, with Wilson joining four-star guards Derek Dixon and Isaiah Denis. Davis and his staff could have a busy offseason, as RJ Davis is out of eligibility and freshmen Drake Powell and Ian Jackson are projected first-round NBA draft picks.

Carolina is struggling for the second time in three seasons, losing its past two games to Stanford and Wake Forest to drop to 12-8 overall and 5-3 in the ACC entering Saturday’s game against Boston College.

Breaking news in the college basketball world as highly-touted prospect Caleb Wilson has committed to the University of North Carolina over the University of Kentucky. Wilson, a 6’8 forward, is ranked as a top-10 prospect in the Class of 2023 and his decision to join the Tar Heels is a major coup for the program.

UNC head coach Roy Williams expressed his excitement over Wilson’s commitment, stating that he believes the talented young player will make an immediate impact on the team. Wilson’s versatility, scoring ability, and high basketball IQ make him a valuable addition to the Tar Heels’ roster.

Kentucky fans are sure to be disappointed by Wilson’s decision, as they had been hoping to see him in a Wildcats uniform. However, UNC supporters are thrilled to welcome Wilson to Chapel Hill and are looking forward to seeing him in action next season.

With Wilson on board, the Tar Heels are poised to be a force to be reckoned with in the ACC and beyond. Stay tuned for more updates on Wilson’s journey with UNC basketball.

  • Why Ben Johnson chose the Chicago Bears, and what it means for Caleb Williams’ future

Another domino in the coaching world fell as the Chicago Bears officially hired Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. The move comes just days after the top-seeded Lions were eliminated from the postseason by the Washington Commanders, freeing up Johnson to focus on his next steps.

Johnson has been one of the most in-demand head coaching candidates of the last few cycles. Since becoming Detroit’s offensive coordinator in 2022, the Lions have finished top-four in total offense each of the last three seasons. Three of the four highest-scoring seasons in the Lions’ 95-year history came under Johnson, including a franchise-record-setting 564-point season in 2024.

One of the biggest drivers behind Johnson’s selection was undoubtedly a chance to work with 2024 No. 1 overall draft pick Caleb Williams. In Detroit Johnson undertook a similar developmental role with Jared Goff, who became one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL working in Johnson’s system. Goff posted three straight years of at least 4,000 yards under Johnson and set career highs in nearly every passing metric during the 2024 season. While Williams showed flashes of greatness during his rookie season, his real development begins now that Johnson is in the fold — Dianna and Chase, who played under Ben Johnson in Detroit, explain why.

The partial transcript below has been edited for clarity. You can listen to the full episode on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, or watch on YouTube above.

Dianna: We just had this moment of like, “Ben Johnson needs to go to Chicago and call it.” But I had known that he had some questions about the setup there, with [Bears president] Kevin Warren and [general manager] Ryan Poles, just some curiosities of how that would work. The whole idea that he wanted full control and full power, that’s definitely part of it. He was interested in bringing people he knows, people he trusts. In the end, he makes the decision to actually go to the organization where he’s not getting all that. This wasn’t about money. This wasn’t about roster control and power play. This was about one thing: Caleb Williams. This is the organization that’s got the talented quarterback. Because when you compare it, Tom Brady had a hard argument to make without having a quarterback in Vegas.

Chase: I think that for me, it’s crazy because I’m thinking about the roster of the Raiders and yeah, they got some players, right? Maxx Crosby. Then you just start really looking at like one through 53 of the Raiders roster. I’m like, “ehh.” You’ve got Brady, and he’s promising all these things, but there’s actually nothing there. And then you look at Jacksonville like, ehhhhh, Trevor Lawrence, OK. He’s on a veteran deal making $53 million a year. The roster control there, Trent Baalke, I don’t know what they’re going do, one through 53, I’m like “ehh.” It’s the Bears. What are you thinking about? I think he probably had a moment of clarity with this, like “Hey, like we have a legitimate offense.” They need three offensive linemen. They probably need another skill position, tight end — other than a Cole Kmet-type guy, this F who can do it all in his offense. But the thing about Caleb Williams is that there’s no doubt in my mind that he will be successful with Ben Johnson. Ben Johnson, quarterback whisperer, a top-five offense in every single year coordinating, in fact No. 1 or 2 a couple of years in a row. It’s just crazy how this stuff works out. I want to ask you this, because I thought the first thing that came to mind when all this news broke was he didn’t have an in-person meeting. He had a Zoom meeting. That’s crazy!

Dianna: Well remember, he wanted this Bears job last year. The Bears stuck with Matt Eberflus. They rolled it out and, well, it is what it is. We know what happened there. He’s had his eyes on Chicago. I do think, with all the options on the table and you’re listening to so many different people — and there were a lot of people in his ear, I’ve talked to people who’ve talked to him, too — everyone is chatting with him and telling him what he should be doing, and he’s open to guidance. I think, for the Bears, they’ve gone through this process of interviewing almost a dozen candidates. And while I know that they really liked Mike Vrabel, and I do think if Vrabel didn’t take New England, they would have hired Mike Vrabel. I think Ben Johnson was a home run for them as well. I think this is why I said that this whole coaching cycle was really about Vrabel and Johnson. Who was going to get them first? Timing is important. You and I talk about this with players with free agency.

    Chase: Timing is everything.

Dianna: Obviously, we know Ben Johnson had been coaching through this playoffs. The bye in the first round made it complicated for teams to jump in on him. Whereas we knew Vrabel was able to talk to Chicago right away because he didn’t have a job. What if that panned out? What if Robert Kraft decided to stick with Jerod Mayo? There are so many little moments, little things in decisions that could have affected it. But in the end, I think for the Bears, this is such a win.

Chase: It’s a home run hire.

Dianna: This is such a big day for Bears fans. And for Caleb Williams!

Chase: Well, it’s one of the most important hires in the history of the of the franchise, to be honest with you. They’ve been so down and out with all these different head coaches, all these different quarterbacks. They finally get the No. 1  pick in Caleb Williams, which is supposed to be this generational guy. And yeah, he played well at times this year. Yeah, he’s struggled this year. But if you look at the continuity of the offense, there’s just nothing there. One game, they’re under center, play action. The next game they’re this college USC offense. There was no rhyme or reason. When I’m a quarterback, I want to know the “why” on plays. Why are we doing this? Why are we getting under center? And I don’t think that Caleb Williams had a grasp on the “why.” That’s all that Caleb Williams will have a grasp on with Ben Johnson. That’s how he works. I was with him in 2020 when he was a tight ends coach for the Detroit Lions. You could just tell. Super smart, really low ego, high analytical guy, really understands relationships well. Obviously will take a lot of what Dan Campbell does from the leader men aspect and you know, put his own twist on it as well

Dianna: That was going to be my question for you. We joke on the show all the time about the “leader of men.” While we mock it, we know what they mean. They want these type of leaders to galvanize the locker room. Is he like that?

Chase: Yeah. He’s definitely on the — not shy. Shy is the wrong word. I’m trying to find a word for it.

    Dianna: Calmer?

Chase: Calm, yeah. It’s a little bit more laid back, a little bit more calm. He’s definitely not Dan Campbell biting kneecaps off. He has his own certain way. But I do think him being with Dan Campbell so long, and just the type of head coach that Dan Campbell is, I truly believe he’s going to take some of what Dan Campbell did and he’s going to do it. He’s gonna put his own spin on it, but at the end of the day, this was always about, like you said, Caleb Williams and getting an offensive mind. The number one thing, if I had to point to Caleb Williams’ issues at times this past year, it was all about timing. Timing within the pocket, timing in the passing game, going through progressions. That is what needs to get fixed. This hire fixes it.

Ben Johnson’s decision to sign with the Chicago Bears has significant implications for Caleb Williams’ future in the NFL. In this post, we will delve into why Johnson chose the Bears and how it could impact Williams’ career trajectory.

Johnson, a highly sought-after free agent tight end, ultimately decided to join the Bears due to their strong offensive system and promising young quarterback in Justin Fields. The opportunity to play alongside Fields, as well as the team’s commitment to developing a dynamic passing game, were key factors in Johnson’s decision.

This move to Chicago could have ripple effects for Williams, the talented quarterback prospect who is set to enter the NFL draft. With Johnson now in the mix, the Bears’ offense is poised to become even more explosive, offering an enticing landing spot for a quarterback of Williams’ caliber.

If Williams is selected by the Bears in the draft, he would have the chance to learn and grow alongside Fields and benefit from the rapport already established between Johnson and Fields. The potential for a dynamic quarterback-tight end duo could elevate Williams’ game and help him transition smoothly to the NFL.

Overall, Johnson’s choice to join the Bears signals a bright future for the team’s offense and could pave the way for Williams to thrive in the NFL. It will be exciting to see how this partnership unfolds and the impact it has on Williams’ career moving forward.

  • Prediction Flips in UNC Basketball Pursuit of Top Recruit Caleb Wilson

Across five recruiting cycles as UNC basketball head coach, Hubert Davis has landed three composite five-star prospects in current Tar Heel talents Elliot Cadeau (2023), Ian Jackson (2024), and Drake Powell (2024).

If the recent wave of insider predictions proves correct, Davis will add a fourth five-star to his tally on Thursday in the form of Holy Innocents Episcopal School (Ga.) forward Caleb Wilson, ranking No. 5 overall on the 247Sports 2025 Composite. The pro-Tar Heel picks include one of the flipped variety in the Rivals FutureCast, as many folks have turned from favoring fellow blueblood Kentucky.

Wilson, a 6-foot-9, 205-pound versatile phenom whose third finalist is Ohio State, hasn’t revealed a time for his Thursday announcement. Meanwhile, as HS Top Recruits noted this week, despite UNC’s sudden shift in standing as the newly perceived frontrunner, there’s not enough intel to entirely rule out Kentucky at this juncture:

“I have heard a lot of people believe that UNC will be the ultimate landing spot for Caleb Wilson now. It’s about 70-30 right now leaning UNC with the sources I have. Many on Kentucky’s side remain hopeful though.”

The 247Sports Crystal Ball contains one prediction. It comes courtesy of top insider Travis Branham, who seemed to spark the Tar Heel chatter when he entered his “high confidence” pick on Saturday morning.

Plus, three of the four Rivals FutureCast picks, including the pair that popped up in the past two days, align with Branham’s forecast.

That said, the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine continues to favor the Wildcats to come out on top for Wilson.

UNC basketball, a persistent Caleb Wilson suitor for over a year and a half now, has already reeled in two 2025 prizes in Gonzaga College High School (D.C.) four-star guard Derek Dixon and Davidson Day School (N.C.) four-star guard Isaiah Denis.

  • Caleb Wilson: Will it be Kentucky Wildcats or North Carolina Tar Heels?

    Where will Caleb Wilson land?

Wilson, the talented 6-foot-9 forward from Atlanta, has been viewed as a Kentucky Wildcats lean, but things have gotten a lot more interesting with the North Carolina Tar Heels making a heavy push.

Wilson is set to announce his decision on Thursday, with Kentucky, North Carolina, and Ohio State as the three finalists. Most insiders believe it is a two-horse race between the Wildcats and the Tar Heels.

Joe Tipton from On3 recently said there is growing optimism in Chapel Hill that UNC will win out, while Trilly Donovan made a prediction for the Heels on his Discord page. 247 Sports’ Travis Branham also logged a prediction for North Carolina.

It wouldn’t be fair to count Kentucky out in this recruitment just yet. The Wildcats have been leaders in this recruitment for a while, and Mark Pope and Co. will no doubt continue to make a heavy push for one of the top prospects in the 2025 class.

With a decision looming, which school do you think Caleb Wilson will commit to on Thursday? Let us know in the poll and in the comments below.

  • The Bears needed to hire a coach to support Caleb Williams. With Ben Johnson, did they achieve it?

Detroit Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown knew this was a risk.

His prized offensive coordinator leaving for a division rival? The Chicago Bears had not reached a deal with Ben Johnson last week, when St. Brown and his brother Equanimeous St. Brown hosted Bears quarterback Caleb Williams on their podcast.

But the rumblings were enough that Amon-Ra St. Brown joked last week: “Just so you know, I told Ben, ‘Caleb is f***ing trash.’”

“That’s all right,” Williams deadpanned in response. “What he does with that information, that’s all good.”

Amon-Ra St. Brown doubled down: “Caleb’s a diva. He’s a selfish motherf***er, wants to do everything on his own, thinks he’s the smartest guy in the world, not coachable.”

His brother rolled his eyes: “Amon, he’s gone. Say goodbye.”

    By Monday, Johnson was.

The Bears reached a deal to hire Johnson as their next head coach Monday afternoon, according to multiple media reports, including a post from the coaching agency representing Johnson. The team made the official announcement Tuesday, and Bears fans have reason to celebrate.

Because while a front office whose words and actions don’t always align cited different goals for its coaching search, the success of the Bears’ next hire will hinge most strongly on one facet: maximizing the potential of Williams, whom they selected first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The three offensive coordinators and two head coaches he navigated as a rookie stunted that goal. Now, a high-ceiling talent has the chance to recover and grow in his sophomore year.

Williams learned, through a tumultuous rookie year, how powerful stability could be. Hiring a head coach who calls plays, and thus won’t bolt for a promotion elsewhere, can create an offensive advantage. So yes, consider him a fan of the Johnson hire.

“Selfishly, I want an offensive-minded guy,” Williams told the St. Brown brothers, “so I can build with him and be with that coach for the next 19, 17, 15 years.”

Just before he admitted he wanted an offensive head coach, Williams mentioned he wanted a head coach who is “strong-minded” and “a leader of men.” His franchise touted that emphatically during a head coach searching process that included interviews (some virtual, some in person) with 17 announced candidates.

But the Bears did not commit in recent weeks to hiring an offensive head coach. Team president Kevin Warren insisted it was important to enter the search undecided, while general manager Ryan Poles declined to confirm hiring an offensive coach for Williams was necessary.

“For a young quarterback, obviously there’s an ideal fit, but at the end of the day, you gotta look at all the characteristics of what you’re looking for in the head coach,” Poles said Jan. 7. “And then you got to see what’s the best bundle of those to bring in the building. Obviously we’re talking about leadership, accountability, some of those important things that carry over regardless of what the situation is. Those have to be there. To ignore those just to go to the other side [of scheme strength] I think is a bad deal, too.

“So really it’s the candidate that has the best collection of all of those things, and yes, the development of a young quarterback is gonna be a huge factor in that.”

Teams have learned the downfalls of failing to support a rookie quarterback, from Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence translating seemingly generational talent into average performance, to the litany of quarterbacks the New York Jets have drafted and wrecked, either permanently or temporarily (welcome back, Geno Smith and Sam Darnold).

Williams completed 62.5% of passes for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions as a rookie. His 87.8 passer rating ranked 25th in the league. Williams’ attempts to make plays, paired with shoddy protection, led to a league-high 68 sacks for a league-high 466 yards.

With Johnson, the Bears hope they can protect Williams better and give him better schematic wrinkles to succeed. The architect of the Lions’ No. 1 scoring offense is no sure bet, but league sources expect a significant upgrade.

One former offensive coordinator, who’s now an NFC assistant, expects an uptick in play-action passes after the Lions ranked first in the league with 36.6% this season compared to the Bears’ 30th-most 17%. Williams could see more time under center, too, after the Lions ranked last with 16 attempts in shotgun compared to the Bears’ 37.

“It’ll be dramatic change,” the former coordinator told Yahoo Sports. “More of a pro-style deal than what they were trying to run this year. Gonna have to retrain the QB.”

An NFC assistant who has worked with a first-round quarterback pick expected some schematic continuity after considering the depths of coaching trees, and some zone-run influence overlap between Johnson’s time under Adam Gase and the Los Angeles Rams’ Sean McVay, who influenced 2024 Bears coordinators Shane Waldron and Thomas Brown.

Williams is focused less on specific scheme and more on how a head coach can offer an edge or a disadvantage on macro considerations.

“So I can also learn and grow and things like that from him,” Williams said on the St. Brown Podcast. “[Someone who’s] good with the clock, good with helping control the game … helping find the right guys to help win championships.”

Did the Bears find the “leader of men” they cited? It’s too soon to say.

While narratives surrounding Detroit didn’t knock Johnson’s leadership, his schematic reputation certainly supersedes word of his presence.

League perspective on Johnson’s readiness for the head coaching role is mixed.

Near-unanimous opinion says he’s a brilliant schematic mind who will be an advantage for any coaching staff. Six seasons in the NFC North will contribute to his game-planning edge as he stays in the division with his new role.

How Johnson’s leadership strengths complement his creativity remains to be seen.

“He’s a phenomenal coordinator, he’s a phenomenal schemer, play designer,” one AFC general manager told Yahoo Sports on Monday. “And look, maybe you put him in a position where he’s like [San Francisco 49ers head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] where you’re like, ‘Hey, we’re really hiring you to be the OC-plus’ because he’s just that good at the role.’

“My inclination is that that’s gonna be a tougher transition for him in the head-coaching seat. I think he’s probably smart enough to manage everything in terms of designing the offense and running the team so maybe it doesn’t end up mattering. But I would actually have some pretty significant reservations there with him.”

One key trait Lions players cited in Johnson’s personality is his intensity. While that may mesh with differing degrees of success across the league, Williams said he seeks that with the Bears.

Sure, St. Brown said in jest how difficult Williams is to coach. But the quarterback himself acknowledged he can be particular and wants a coach who will embrace that.

“A dude that’s got a fire to him,” Williams said. “I don’t want people [who don’t] have a fire. I think I’ve got a fire about me that certain people can’t coach or certain people can’t be around or it doesn’t work in that way. So I think that’s a big part of it.”

The Bears, with their hire, indicated they think so, too.

The Bears needed to hire a coach to support Caleb Williams. With Ben Johnson, did they achieve it?

After a disappointing season, the Chicago Bears knew they needed to make a change in order to support their young quarterback Caleb Williams. Enter Ben Johnson, the new head coach who has been tasked with guiding and developing Williams into a franchise quarterback.

Johnson comes with a strong coaching background, having worked with some of the best quarterbacks in the league. His innovative offensive schemes and emphasis on player development make him the perfect candidate to help Williams reach his full potential.

With Johnson at the helm, the Bears are confident that they have found the right coach to support and elevate Williams. Only time will tell if this decision pays off, but one thing is for certain – the Bears are committed to giving their young quarterback the support he needs to succeed.

  • Bears QB Caleb Williams has surgery, source: ‘nothing serious’

CHICAGO — Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was spotted with a cast on his right wrist while taking in the USC-Wisconsin men’s basketball game on Saturday. It was the result of minor elective surgery to remove a cyst, a team source told ESPN, that is not expected to impact Williams’ offseason.

The quarterback underwent a procedure that was deemed “not serious,” according to a source close to Williams. NFL Network first reported that the 23-year-old quarterback had a cyst removed. At no point during his rookie season was Williams on the Bears’ injury report for a wrist or hand injury.

During general manager Ryan Poles’ season-ending news conference on Jan. 7, Williams was not listed among several players who required offseason surgery.

Williams and Bears wide receiver John Jackson III, a fellow USC alum, were spotted courtside at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. Meanwhile at Halas Hall, the Bears conducted another series of first-round interviews to fill their head coach vacancy. Chicago had virtual interviews with Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores and Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich on Saturday.

The Bears have completed 16 interviews so far in search of the organization’s 19th head coach.

Bears QB Caleb Williams underwent surgery on his throwing shoulder, but according to sources, the procedure was described as ‘nothing serious’. The team remains optimistic that Williams will be fully recovered and ready to lead the offense once the season kicks off. • Report: Caleb Williams had a cyst removed from his right hand

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was spotted with a cast on his right hand on Saturday, but it is reportedly not for an injury that will impact him heading into the 2025 season.

Williams was spotted with the cast while attending a USC basketball game. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the protection is in place because Williams had a cyst removed.

The procedure was described as a minor one and Williams is fine moving into the rest of the offseason.

One of the biggest parts of that offseason will be the hiring of a new head coach in Chicago. Once the Trojans are done with their game against Wisconsin, Williams will return to waiting to find out who that is going to be.

Report: Caleb Williams had a cyst removed from his right hand

Washington, D.C. – In an unexpected turn of events, star quarterback Caleb Williams underwent a minor surgery to have a cyst removed from his right hand. The procedure, which took place earlier this week, was successful and Williams is expected to make a full recovery.

Williams, who recently transferred to the University of Southern California from the University of Oklahoma, has been making headlines with his impressive performance on the field. However, the cyst on his hand had been causing him discomfort and affecting his ability to grip the football properly.

According to sources close to Williams, the surgery was performed by a team of highly skilled medical professionals and went smoothly without any complications. Williams is now resting and undergoing physical therapy to regain full function of his hand.

Fans of the USC Trojans are relieved to hear that Williams is on the road to recovery and are looking forward to seeing him back in action on the football field. With his talent and determination, there is no doubt that Williams will continue to excel and lead his team to victory.
