Paul George vs. Andrew Wiggins is Warriors matchup to watch vs. 76ers – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Deeply disappointed after missing the playoffs last spring, the Warriors ventured into summer vowing to make substantial roster upgrades. At the top of their wish list was six-time All-Star Paul George, then with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Clippers, however, were unwilling to entertain a deal in which George would land with Golden State. They opted to let George enter the free-agent market, putting him out of reach for the salary-cap-strapped Warriors and into the laps of the Philadelphia 76ers, one of the few teams with sufficient cap space to offer a max contract ($212 million, four years).

So, George’s first game this season at Chase Center will be as an opponent. The 76ers (13-18) and Warriors (16-16) meet Thursday night, with tipoff scheduled shortly after 7.

The man the Warriors targeted will spend considerable time facing Andrew Wiggins, one of the players that interested the Clippers when the teams considered proposals last summer.

Wiggins’ season has been one of peaks and valleys. He’s averaging 16.4 points per game, third on the team, shooting 44.6 percent from the field, including 40.7 percent distance. He is one of three Warriors – Stephen Curry and Jonathan Kuminga are the others – to score at least 20 points in nine games.

But Wiggins has reached 20 points only once in the last seven games and has a total of 23 over his last three games on 10-of-32 shooting from the field, including 3 of 14 from deep.

This game should place Wiggins’ pride on full display. He loves the Golden State franchise and knows he almost certainly would have gone to the Clippers in any deal that brought George to the Warriors.

Though George will face a variety of defenders, including Draymond Green and Kuminga, it’s Wiggins who has something to prove. If George, averaging 16.1 points while shooting 41.5 percent from the field, including 32.8 from deep, has the superior game, it puts Philly in position for victory.

Wiggins needs a strong game to pull out of his tailspin, and the same applies to the Warriors, who have lost 13 of their last 17 games and hoping to use the current homestand to right themselves.

The 76ers also are trying to rise in the standings. They’re trying to climb out of the hole they fell into earlier, losing 12 of their first 14 games while navigating injury-related absences of Joel Embiid and George. George is healthy, but Embiid is listed as questionable with a left foot sprain.

Dennis Schröder helped reshape former Warriors guard Donte DiVincenzo’s outlook after he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves on the eve of the NBA season.

Pitt guard Ishmael Leggett out with lower body injury for game against California

Pitt’s depth at guard will get another serious test Wednesday after coach Jeff Capel ruled senior guard Ishmael Leggett unavailable with a lower body injury for the game against California.

Leggett will join Damian Dunn (hand injury) on the sideline for Pitt’s second ACC game of the season. The loss is significant for the short term — it is not considered serious — but the Panthers (10-2, 1-0) must look elsewhere for Leggett’s scoring punch and overall solid floor play. He is one of four players in the nation averaging at least 17 points (17.5), six rebounds (6.1), 2.5 assists (2.7) and 1.5 steals (1.7) per game.

Capel will turn to freshmen Brandin Cummings and Amsal Delalic against the Golden Bears (7-5, 0-1) to compensate for the loss of one his best players in Pitt’s first ACC game at Petersen Events Center.

Cummings (Lincoln Park) is averaging 7.7 points and 16.3 minutes per game after scoring 30 points against Eastern Kentucky on Dec. 11. He has scored at least 10 points in four games while shooting 41.7% (15 of 36) from beyond the 3-point arc.

Delalic is averaging 4.2 and 16.2, with an overall 53.6 percentage (15 of 28) beyond the arc.

California police were treated to a surprise Monday night when they pulled over a Rolls-Royce in a suspected DUI case and discovered a dealer’s amount of weed and a spider monkey in the front seat.

Ali Mused Adel Mohamed, 27, was busted in his 2022 Rolls-Royce Ghost for speeding on SR-99 as he was driving the 1-month-old primate, which was wearing a pink onesie.

Mohamed was arrested and charged with DUI and possession of cannabis for sale, the California Highway Patrol said.

“The driver had a baby monkey attached — or clenched — on his person. That’s something you don’t see every day,” Modera CHP spokesperson Sergio Moreno told North Valley News.

The exotic pet was taken from Mohamed due to California’s rule against owning primates as pets.

“Spider monkeys are illegal. You cannot possess them,” Madera County Animal Services Director Amy Toler told the outlet. “It is on the endangered species list. Definitely can’t have them here in California.”

The infant male monkey was first taken to the Madera Animal Shelter.

While at its temporary shelter, the unnamed monkey snacked on mushed bananas, feeding itself with two separate spoons in an adorable video posted to Facebook.

“Since we don’t have what the monkey needed for feeding, we went with the next best thing, which is your common bananas,” Toler said.

“This is not where they should be. You know, we should not be caring for these animals. They need to be in the wild with nature, with their own species,” she added.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife took custody of the monkey on Tuesday and will transport the primate to the Oakland Zoo, 150 miles northwest of Madera.

Mohamed was booked into Madera County Jail on several charges including possession of an exotic animal.

Photos captured the monkey sitting in Mohamed’s lap in the back of a cop car as another picture showed cops handcuffing the driver during the traffic stop.

Inside the white luxury car, cops pulled out several bags filled with marijuana buds, several phones and a plastic bag of money.

In November, Dallas police confiscated an internet-famous monkey, Jorgie Boy, after the unpermitted pet was found deathly sick and malnourished in a car crash in which his owner says she had passed out drunk.

Brandi Botello, 29, had her 3-year-old spider monkey with her for a weekend when they were in a single-car crash.

The tattooed influencer, who was charged with driving under the influence, fought for the monkey to be returned to her despite Jorgie Boy suffering fractured bones and weighing 6 pounds, less than half the average weight of a spider monkey.



The California Highway Patrol officers had quite the surprise during a recent DUI traffic stop when they found a spider monkey sitting in the front seat of the car.

According to reports, the officers pulled over a vehicle for suspected drunk driving when they noticed the unusual passenger in the front seat. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence, but the monkey was taken into custody by animal control.

It is unclear how the monkey ended up in the car or if it belonged to the driver, but one thing is for sure – this was definitely not your typical traffic stop.

The spider monkey is now safe and being cared for by animal control, and hopefully, this serves as a reminder to always drive sober and never drink and drive. It’s not only dangerous for yourself and others on the road, but you never know what kind of unexpected passengers you might have in your car.
