49ers reinforce trenches with roster moves before matchup vs. Lions – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

SANTA CLARA — Undrafted rookie center Drake Nugent likely is to make his NFL debut on “Monday Night Football.”

The 49ers elevated the former Stanford standout to be in uniform for when San Francisco faces the Detroit Lions at Levi’s Stadium.

The 49ers on Monday placed guard Aaron Banks on injured reserve and activated rookie linebacker Tatum Bethune off of it.

Bethune, a seventh-round draft pick from Florida State, was sidelined for the 49ers’ past five games after sustaining a sprained knee in the Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

The 49ers also elevated defensive lineman Alex Barrett from the practice squad.

Nugent will be in uniform for the first time on Monday after the 49ers experienced a rash of injuries along the offensive line.

Banks (knee), offensive tackles Trent Williams (ankle) and Jaylon Moore (calf) were placed on injured reserve within the last week.

The 49ers also ruled out offensive lineman Spencer Burford (calf) and right tackle Colton McKivitz (knee) is listed as questionable to play against the Lions.

San Francisco recently signed offensive linemen Austen Pleasants, Charlie Heck and Matt Hennessy to the active roster.

Nugent appeared in 42 games with 39 starts over five seasons at Stanford (2019-22) and Michigan (2023) before the 49ers signed him as an undrafted rookie.

In his final season of college football, Nugent was an All-Big Ten selection and helped the Wolverines win a national championship.

George Kittle hopes to break Terrell Owens’ 49ers receiving records – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

SANTA CLARA — Tight end George Kittle has one season remaining on his contract with the 49ers, and that might be all he needs to reach a couple of his goals.

But he made it clear he does not want his time with the 49ers to end there.

Kittle on Friday said he wants to eclipse Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens to rank No. 2 on the 49ers’ all-time lists of receptions and yards receiving.

“I don’t think I’ll ever catch Jerry Rice on anything,” Kittle said. “But that’s totally fine. I’m OK with that. I don’t want to play that long.”

Kittle currently ranks third in franchise history, behind Rice and Owens, with 528 receptions for 7,241 receiving yards.

In eight seasons with San Francisco, Owens caught 592 passes for 8,572 yards.

Kittle is one of the few star players on the 49ers who is living up to expectations this season as San Francisco staggers toward the finish line with a 6-9 record.

He leads the team with 68 catches for 967 yards and eight touchdowns.

Kittle is within striking distance of Owens. He said his annual goal is to catch around 75 passes for 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns.

With 33 yards receiving in the final two games of the season, Kittle will reach 1,000 yards for the fourth time in his career.

The only other tight ends in NFL history to accomplish that feat are Travis Kelce (seven), and Tony Gonzalez, Rob Gronkowski and Jason Witten (four, apiece).

Kittle is on pace for the Pro Football Hall of Fame through this stage in his career. But he said he does not look at where he stands among the all-time greats at his position.

“I’ll look back on that whenever I’m done playing. It is what it is,” Kittle said. “I’m just very excited I’ve got to spend eight years with the San Francisco 49ers, hopefully continue to play here because it’s a storied franchise, and hopefully I can eventually catch T.O.“

The 49ers will face a decision with Kittle, 31, in the offseason. He has one season remaining on the five-year, $75 million contract he signed prior to the 2020 season. He is scheduled to make $15 million in salary and bonuses in 2025.

It would be a reasonable demand for his representation to push for a contract extension in the offseason to add more years and guaranteed money to his contract.

Kittle declined to address that topic on Friday.

“You can ask me that in the offseason,” he said.

He said he wants to continue to play football until the wheels fall off or his wife tells him it’s time to retire. Kittle also made it clear that he wishes to remain with the 49ers for at least several seasons to come.

“I love where I’m at,” said Kittle, a fifth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. “It’s a great place.”

San Francisco 49ers star tight end George Kittle is setting his sights on breaking Terrell Owens’ receiving records for the team. Kittle, who has quickly become one of the most dynamic offensive weapons in the NFL, is determined to etch his name in the history books alongside one of the greatest receivers to ever don the red and gold.

Owens, who played for the 49ers from 1996 to 2003, holds several franchise records for receiving, including most receiving yards in a single season (1,451) and most receiving touchdowns in a single season (16). Kittle, who has already made a name for himself with his elite pass-catching ability and incredible athleticism, is hoping to surpass Owens’ impressive numbers and leave his own mark on the storied franchise.

With a strong work ethic and a relentless drive to succeed, Kittle has proven that he has what it takes to rewrite the record books. Despite facing constant double teams and tough defenses, the Pro Bowl tight end has continued to put up impressive numbers and establish himself as a key player for the 49ers.

As he enters the upcoming season with his sights set on breaking Owens’ records, Kittle remains humble and focused on helping his team win games. With his combination of speed, strength, and hands, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to achieve his goal and solidify his place in 49ers history.

Fans can expect to see Kittle continue to dominate on the field and make a strong push towards surpassing Owens’ records. With his talent and determination, the sky’s the limit for this young star as he looks to etch his name alongside the all-time greats in San Francisco 49ers history.

Top 10 Christmas moments in NBA history – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Holiday hoops are here.

The NBA has been playing on Christmas Day since 1947, and this year will be no different. The league has once again left five star-studded matchups under the tree for basketball fans, including Timberwolves-Mavericks, Sixers-Celtics and Lakers-Warriors.

Before things tip-off on Christmas Day, let’s look back at 10 of the most iconic holiday moments in NBA history.

1961: Wilt Chamberlain’s double-double in double OT

Much like the Abominable Snowmonster of the North, Wilt Chamberlain towered over everyone on Christmas.

The legendary center posted a wild statline on the holiday in 1961, scoring 59 points to go along with 36 rebounds. However, his Philadelphia Warriors ultimately lost to the New York Knicks by a score of 136-135 in double overtime.

1984: A King rises

Bernard King set a Christmas record in 1984 that is still standing 40 years later.

The Hall of Famer posted the best scoring performance in NBA Christmas history, tallying 60 points in the Knicks’ 120-114 loss to the New Jersey Nets.

1986: Patrick Ewing beats Michael Jordan at the buzzer

Patrick Ewing played the role of the Grinch in Michael Jordan’s NBA Christmas debut.

The former college rivals squared off at Madison Square Garden on Christmas Day in 1986, and Ewing got the last laugh with a game-winning putback to give his Knicks an 86-85 win over Jordan’s Chicago Bulls.

1995: Magic best Rockets in NBA Finals rematch

The NBA put the previous season’s Finals teams against one another on Christmas Day for the first time in 1995, pinning the Houston Rockets against the Orlando Magic.

The Magic got a little revenge on the 1994-95 champions, with Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway scoring 22 points apiece to beat Hakeem Olajuwon and the Rockets 92-90.

2004: Shaq and Kobe reunite on Christmas Day

Shaq was back in the Christmas spotlight in 2004, this time in a highly anticipated showdown against his former running mate in Los Angeles.

O’Neal and the Miami Heat traveled to L.A. for his first game against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers following a blockbuster trade that summer. The stars came to play, with O’Neal and Dwyane Wade posting 20-point double-doubles to give the Heat just enough to defeat Bryant and his 42 points in overtime.

2008: Lakers snap Celtics’ winning streak

L.A. played host to another Finals rematch in 2008.

The defending champion Boston Celtics entered the game on an 18-game winning streak, but the Lakers put that to a stop with a 92-83 victory.

2011: Bulls pull off opening day comeback

The Bulls opened the 2011-12 lockout-shortened season with a bang on Christmas Day.

Derrick Rose led the charge as Chicago overcame a late 11-point deficit to stun the Lakers in L.A. The reigning NBA MVP hit the go-ahead basket with 4.8 seconds left, and Luol Deng sealed the win by blocking Kobe Bryant’s potential game-winner.

2013: “Jingle Hoops” rings in the season

The NBA debuted an all-time commercial to promote its holiday schedule in 2013.

Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, James Harden and Steve Nash lined up across the 3-point line (in short-lived, short-sleeve jerseys) and shot at five different hoops to recreate “Jingle Bells.”

The league remixed the commercial for its 2024 Christmas games, using animated version of top stars to get everyone in the Christmas spirit.

2016: Cavs come back to beat the Warriors

The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers met in four consecutive Finals from 2015 to 2018, but one of their most memorable matchups in that stretch came on Christmas Day.

Six months after completing an epic 3-1 series comeback for their first NBA championship, the Cavs welcomed the Warriors to town for a Christmas showdown in 2016. They had another comeback in store on the holiday, overcoming a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit thanks to Kyrie Irving’s go-ahead, turnaround jumper in the final seconds.

2022: Aaron Gordon gifts Suns a poster

Is that Santa and his reindeer in the sky? No, it’s Aaron Gordon.

The high-flying forward put an exclamation point on the Denver Nuggets’ overtime win over the Phoenix Suns by posterizing Landry Shamet in the final minute of the game.

Nikola Jokic was also on his game that night, as the eventual NBA Finals MVP posted a preposterous triple-double with 41 points, 15 rebounds and 15 assists.

  1. Michael Jordan’s "Double-Nickel" Game: In 1992, Jordan scored 42 points against the New York Knicks on Christmas Day, just a few months after returning from retirement. This game is often considered one of the greatest performances of his career.
  2. Kobe Bryant’s 61-Point Game: In 2009, Bryant put on a show against the New York Knicks, scoring 61 points in Madison Square Garden. This performance solidified his status as one of the greatest players in NBA history.
  3. LeBron James’ Return to Cleveland: In 2014, James made his highly anticipated return to Cleveland after leaving for the Miami Heat. He put on a show, scoring 34 points in a win over the Golden State Warriors.
  4. Larry Bird’s Steal and Game-Winner: In 1985, Bird made a clutch steal and hit a game-winning jumper against the Indiana Pacers on Christmas Day. This moment is often considered one of the most iconic plays in NBA history.
  5. Shaquille O’Neal’s Dominant Performance: In 2004, O’Neal scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a win over the Miami Heat. This game showcased his dominance in the post and helped lead the Los Angeles Lakers to victory.
  6. Magic Johnson’s Triple-Double: In 1988, Johnson recorded a triple-double with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists against the Phoenix Suns. This performance highlighted his versatility and skill as a point guard.
  7. Kevin Durant’s 44-Point Game: In 2010, Durant scored 44 points in a win over the Denver Nuggets. This game showcased his scoring ability and helped solidify his status as one of the best players in the league.
  8. Tim Duncan’s Game-Winning Shot: In 2008, Duncan hit a game-winning shot against the Phoenix Suns on Christmas Day. This moment showcased his clutch gene and helped lead the San Antonio Spurs to victory.
  9. Dwyane Wade’s Buzzer-Beater: In 2005, Wade hit a game-winning shot at the buzzer against the Detroit Pistons. This moment solidified his status as a clutch player and helped lead the Miami Heat to victory.
  10. Stephen Curry’s 38-Point Game: In 2015, Curry scored 38 points in a win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. This game showcased his scoring ability and helped lead the Golden State Warriors to victory.

Robert Redford sells California home for $4.65M

Robert Redford didn’t need long to sell his serene waterfront residence located north of San Francisco.

After listing the Tiburon, California spread for $4.15 million in early December, Redford and his wife — the artist Sibylle Szaggars Redford — have sold it for $4.65 million, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Not only is that more than the asking price, it’s a tidy profit from the $3.1 million they spent for it some four years ago. During their several years of ownership, the couple dressed the interior with cosmetic upgrades and enhanced the landscaping on the .2-acre lot.

The buyer is a fan of Redford’s work, but his association didn’t influence the sale, the Journal added.

Cricket Wardein, the owner of Mighty Pilates — a chain with locations in northern and southern California — is the new owner. Some of her favorite films include the Redford-directed “Ordinary People” and “The Sting.” She didn’t know the home belonged to him until her real-estate representative informed her — and, as luck would have it, this offering checked off some very big boxes.

Dating to the late 1960s, the four-bedroom residence has some 2,824 square feet — and looks out to views of Keil Cove and Angel Island. Wardein had been on the hunt for more than a year; she told the paper it’s difficult to find a house of this size and with its views in the area.

“I’m pinching myself,” she told the Journal, adding that the Redford connection is “fun,” but she considers the home a gem in any case.

Still, to maintain their legacy of ownership alive in a “forever nod,” Wardein also purchased three paintings from Szaggard Redford that she’ll keep on display inside.

That said, the Redfords now primarily spend their days in art-heavy Santa Fe, New Mexico — a lovely high-desert city replete with vibrant galleries that’s also home to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. It’s also where Szaggard Redford has been hard at work.

“Sadly, we are not able to spend as much time in Tiburon as we would like, as we are now spending more time in Santa Fe … where Sibylle has been creating new art there and focusing on her fine art gallery, Sibylle Szaggars Redford Fine Art,” the couple said in a statement sent by a listing brokerage representative. “And the two of us are devoting a great deal of time to the non-profit organization, The Way of the Rain, also headquartered in Santa Fe, which produces educational and artistic performances to protect the environment and promote global conservation efforts.”

Though the Redfords have sold this Tiburon property, it doesn’t mean they’ll forget the town. In their statement, they added they had previously owned other homes in the area — and this just-sold one really captured their hearts.

“We were immediately struck by the warmth of the home with its light-filled rooms, along with the views of Keil Cove, the San Francisco Bay and Angel Island — the home has lovely and distinct views from each room,” they added. “We also were attracted to the privacy that the home offers, as it sits on a quiet, unpaved cul-de-sac, which does not experience a lot of traffic.”

The listing images show bright, beach cottage-vibe interiors with soothing water views through massive windows. There’s a roomy kitchen, plush living areas and large doors that lead right to the outdoor entertaining retreats. The 1,000-plus-square-foot south and east decks also look out to wonderful water views.

Steven Mavromihalis of Compass represented the sellers. Sara Downs of Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty repped the new owner.

Robert Redford, the legendary actor and environmental activist, has sold his stunning California home for a whopping $4.65 million. The 3,000 square foot property, located in the picturesque wine country of Napa Valley, boasts four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards.

Redford, known for his iconic roles in films such as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Sting,” purchased the home in 2004 and has used it as a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. The actor has been a vocal advocate for environmental preservation and sustainability, and it’s no surprise that his home reflects his commitment to living in harmony with nature.

The new owners of Redford’s former residence are sure to enjoy the serene beauty and luxury that the property has to offer. Congratulations to both the buyer and seller on this successful transaction!

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle’s ‘important’ reason for spending Christmas at home in California revealed

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly prioritized their children when they decided to spend Christmas at home in California.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex enjoyed the holiday with son Prince Archie, 5, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 3, at their home in the exclusive enclave of Montecito.

According to royal biographer Ingrid Seward, the couple made the choice to stay home after declining an invitation to celebrate Christmas at Althorp House, the Northampton, U.K., estate owned by the late Princess Diana’s younger brother, Charles, Earl Spencer.

“Harry and Meghan were invited for Christmas at Althorp with thrice-married Uncle Charles, now Earl Spencer, but have decided to stay in California,” Seward told the Mirror. “Meghan says it’s important for her that Archie and Lilibet can have ‘connective memories’ of Thanksgiving and Christmas at home and enjoy the traditions like putting out ‘carrots for the reindeer.’”

Despite the rift between the Sussexes and the royal family, Harry and Earl Spencer have continued to share a close relationship.

Harry and Meghan have visited Althorp on multiple occasions over the past few years, and the duke’s uncle attended his nephew’s Invictus Games’ 10th anniversary service in London May 8.

Representatives for Harry and Megan did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

During a November interview with Marie Claire, Meghan gushed over her love for the holidays.

She noted that her children are now “3 and 5, so every year it gets better.”

“At first, I think, as a mom with children, you’re just enjoying having them there, but they’re not understanding everything that’s happening yet,” the former “Suits” star said. “But now we’re at the age where I just can’t wait to see it through their lens every year.

“Every single holiday is a new adventure.”

On Dec. 16, Harry and Markle released their holiday card, which featured a grid of six photos. An accompanying message said, “On behalf of the office of Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Archewell Productions and Archewell Foundation, we wish you a very happy holiday season and a joyful new year.”

Included in those six pictures was a rare glimpse of Archie and Lilibet. In the family photo, Harry is seen bending down to greet his daughter with a hug, and Markle is seen doing the same with Archie.

Earlier this month, People magazine reported the Sussexes did not receive an invitation from the royal family to join them at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk for their annual Christmas holiday.

Harry and Meghan haven’t spent Christmas at Sandringham with the royal family since 2018, the same year they were married.

On Christmas Day, King Charles III, 76, and wife Queen Camilla, 77, took part in the royal family’s traditional walk for morning mass at Sandringham’s St. Mary Magdalene Church.

They were joined by Charles’ son Prince William, 42, Kate Middleton, 42, and their children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.

Other royal family members in attendance included Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, 74; her daughter Zara Tindall, 43; and Mike Tindall, 46. Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, 60, and his wife Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, 59, also attended the service.

The year has been a tumultuous one for the royal family. In February, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles was being treated for cancer, though it was not specified which type. Earlier this year, the monarch was treated for an enlarged prostate.

In January, Kensington Palace announced Kate had planned abdominal surgery. She was out of sight for several months, sparking speculation about her health.

In March, Kate put the speculation to rest by announcing she had also been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer.

In September, Kate announced she had completed chemotherapy treatment. In a video announcing her progress, she said the path to full recovery would be long, and she would take it day by day.

She said she would undertake some limited engagements through the end of the year.

Fox News Digital’s Brie Stimston and Janelle Ash contributed to this report.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have recently announced that they will be spending Christmas at home in California, rather than joining the royal family in the UK for the holidays. While some may question their decision, the couple has revealed an important reason for their choice.

According to sources close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, they are prioritizing the health and safety of their young children, Archie and Lilibet, by opting to celebrate the festive season in the comfort of their own home. With ongoing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic and potential travel restrictions, Harry and Meghan feel it is best to remain in the US where they can better control their environment and limit potential exposure to the virus.

Additionally, the couple reportedly wants to create their own family traditions and memories with their children, away from the spotlight and expectations of royal tradition. This decision is seen as a way for Harry and Meghan to establish their independence and forge their own path as a family.

While some may criticize their choice to not spend Christmas with the royal family, it is clear that Harry and Meghan’s primary concern is the well-being of their children and the desire to create a sense of normalcy and stability in their lives. As they continue to navigate their new roles outside of the monarchy, this holiday season will be a meaningful and special time for the Sussex family.

Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith reenact LeBron’s iconic Instagram live – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith are huge fans of the NBA — and LeBron James.

The Sharks young duo posted a video to Instagram reenacting the hilarious James family video taken underneath a basketball hoop. The original Instagram live clip showed James and his two sons, Bronny and Bryce, taking turns shooting.

The audio from the original clip was overlaid onto the footage of Celebrini and Smith taking turns shooting. Eventually, Smith lays down a vicious dunk, almost bringing the hoop down to the ground, as he mimics James yelling, “On his head, on his head. Ain’t that what they say?”

Smith and Celebrini form the young cornerstone of a San Jose squad looking to return to relevance in the NHL. The two teenagers have reinvigorated the moribund franchise, giving it a much-needed jolt.

Celebrini has more than lived up to the hype after being selected No.1 overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, with 25 points in 25 games played. Smith has 11 points through 29 total games this season.

Still, the two teenagers aren’t taking themselves too seriously, which is a good thing given the sky-high expectations that have been heaped on them as they try to lead the Sharks back to the top of the NHL.

In a hilarious new video, physical therapist Macklin Celebrini and actor Will Smith teamed up to recreate LeBron James’ iconic Instagram live from earlier this year. The duo put their own comedic spin on the viral moment, with Celebrini playing the role of LeBron and Smith playing the role of his friend.

From the funny banter to the impressive impersonations, the reenactment had fans in stitches as they watched the two entertainers bring LeBron’s live session to life in a whole new way.

Winning ticket for $1.22 billion lottery jackpot sold in California, Mega Millions says

At least one Mega Millions player has plenty of dough to ring in the New Year after drawing the winning number. After three months without anyone winning the top prize in the lottery, a ticket worth an estimated $1.22 billion was sold in California for the drawing Friday night, according to the Mega Millions website.

The California Lottery said the winning ticket was sold at Circle K (Sunshine Food and Gas) on Rhonda Road in Cottonwood, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) north of Sacramento. The winning ticket matched the white balls 3, 7, 37, 49, 55 and the gold Mega Ball 6. Ishar Gill, a son of the store owner, said the winning ticket was “a blessing” for the small rural town of roughly 6,000 people. The identity of the winner or winners was not immediately known.

“We don’t have the slightest clue of who may have won it or who may have sold it,” Gill told The Associated Press. “But congratulations to the winner.”

The total amount of the Mega Millions jackpot would only be distributed to a winner who chooses an annuity paid over 29 years. Nearly all grand prize winners opt to take a cash payout, which for Friday night’s drawing is an estimated $549.7 million.

Despite the game’s long odds of 1 in 302.6 million, players continued to purchase tickets as the size of the grand prize grew. Until Friday, the last time a Mega Millions player hit the top prize was Sept. 10.

The largest-ever Mega Millions jackpot ticket worth $1.6 billion was sold in Florida in August 2023. Two prizes for its compatriot Powerball lottery have been larger.

Mega Millions and Powerball are sold in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Powerball also is sold in Puerto Rico.

Mega Millions ticket prices are set to rise from $2 to $5 in April. The increase will be one of many changes that officials say will result in improved jackpot odds, more frequent giant prizes and even larger payouts.

In a historic moment for the state of California, a winning ticket for the staggering $1.22 billion Mega Millions jackpot has been sold! The lucky ticket holder is now set to become one of the richest lottery winners in history.

The winning numbers for the record-breaking jackpot were 10, 19, 26, 28, 50, with Mega Ball 16. The ticket was sold at a convenience store in a quiet neighborhood in Southern California, making it the largest jackpot ever won in the state.

The lucky winner has not yet come forward to claim their prize, but Mega Millions officials urge the ticket holder to sign the back of their ticket and contact lottery officials as soon as possible to begin the process of claiming their massive prize.

This incredible win serves as a reminder that dreams really can come true, and that fortunes can change in an instant. Congratulations to the fortunate ticket holder, and may their newfound wealth bring them joy and fulfillment for years to come.
