  • Is Guantanamo Bay still active? What next for notorious prison camp

For years, the images of shackled detainees in orange jumpsuits were synonymous with America’s War on Terror.

The Guantanamo Bay Naval Base on the southeastern coast of Cuba had been leased to the US since 1903, but after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks in New York and Washington it became home to America’s most notorious prison camp.

President Bush ordered a detention facility to be opened on the site in January 2002 specifically to house “enemy combatants” linked to the attacks.

The legal status of the detainees, the cage-like conditions in which they held, and the “enhanced interrogation techniques” they were subjected to triggered legal challenges and controversies for multiple administrations.

But efforts to shut it down have failed, and now the facility is facing another lease of life as a detention centre for undocumented migrants, after President Trump announced plans to turn it into a holding facility with 30,000 beds.

At its peak in 2003, Guantanamo Bay held about 680 prisoners. A total of about 780 inmates have passed through it in the past two decades.

In his first run for president in 2008, Barack Obama promised to close down the facility. During his presidency, the number of people detained there dropped from 242 to 55.

But some detainees could not return to their home countries and there was resistance to them being resettled in the United States.

During his first term, Trump vowed to keep Guantanamo Bay open before Joe Biden resumed efforts to shutter it. Just a few weeks before his term ended, 11 of the detainees — all from Yemen — were released and sent to Oman.

    Trump’s approval rating tracked

That leaves 15 detainees in the facility. Two have been convicted on terrorist charges by a US military commission and seven others are awaiting trial, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of 9/11.

Three of the detainees have not been charged with any crimes but are considered too great a threat to national security to be released.

In June 2023 an independent UN investigator said inmates had been subjected to “cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment” at the existing facilities.

Tessa Lemos Del Pino, executive director of the Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors migrant assistance group, said the announcement added to the sense of fear in migrant communities in America and raised concerns about access to legal counsel for anyone transported there.

“At this point, I feel like we have seen so many efforts to terrorise the immigrant community and those who are working with them that it just feels like one more attack,” she said.

“It’s incredibly sad to hear that they would be using Guantanamo Bay for this. It goes back to the question about folks accessing representation in detention, because who’s going to be able to go out there to meet with a client?”

Guantanamo Bay, a controversial prison camp located in Cuba, has been the center of intense scrutiny and criticism for years. The facility, which was established in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, has been used to detain individuals suspected of terrorism without trial or due process.

Despite calls for its closure from human rights organizations and many world leaders, Guantanamo Bay remains active to this day. As of now, there are still detainees being held at the facility, although the number has significantly decreased over the years.

The future of Guantanamo Bay remains uncertain, with many wondering what will happen to the notorious prison camp. Some have called for the remaining detainees to be either released or transferred to other facilities, while others believe that the camp should continue to operate in order to hold individuals deemed too dangerous to release.

Whatever the fate of Guantanamo Bay may be, one thing is clear – the prison camp will continue to be a source of controversy and debate for years to come. The question remains: what will be the next chapter for this notorious facility?

  • Virat Kohli Declines Team Manager’s Offer During Ranji Trophy Camp, Wins Hearts For His Simplicity

Virat Kohli returned to domestic red-ball cricket after a gap of 12 years, practicing with the Delhi state players ahead of their Ranji Trophy match against Railways, starting January 30. On the second consecutive day of his practice at the Arun Jaitley stadium, Virat gave the perfect example of his grounded nature, as he refused help to carry his kit in and out, doing everything on his own, just like before. Though Kohli last played for Delhi in 2012, against Uttar Pradesh, those who have known him over this period, say not a lot has changed.

As the Delhi team manager Mahesh Bhati reached out to Virat, offering his help in carrying he kit bag around, the Indian cricket team star turned it down, saying it is his stuff and only he should carry it.

Virat, teri help kara dete hain [“Virat, let us help you].’ He replied, ‘Bhaia, kya baat kar rahe ho? Mere khelne ka samaan hai, mai khud leke jaunga [“Bhaia, what are you saying? It’s my playing gear, I’ll carry it myself]’. He carried the kit bag on his shoulders and went inside the dressing room,” Bhati said in an interview with the Times of India.

Bhati also revealed that he and Virat recalled the old times and laughed about how things used tobe during the Under-19 days.

“I was the coach when Virat played Under-19. He played under my coaching only. We have shared a great bond since the beginning. I also love cracking jokes, and so does he. So, we were recalling old memories and bursting into laughter. The first thing he asked was, ‘Bhaia, matting pe ab ladke nahi khelte kya? [Bhaia, don’t boys play on matting anymore?]’ I said, ‘Pagal ho gaya hai tu! Matting kaha hai ab? Ab kahin Delhi mein matting nahi milegi [Where is matting now? You won’t find matting anywhere in Delhi anymore].”

“He said he used to play cut shots and pull shots on matting. He added, ‘Bhaia, maza bada aata tha pull marne mein, awaaz sahi aati thi.’” [Bhaia, hitting pull shots was so much fun; the sound was just perfect]

“Whichever player has played on matting, you will see them play cut and pull shots elegantly, freely, and with confidence. The old players, including Virat, do that really well. It’s because of the cricket they played on matting.”

“Virat also recalled the moments when he used to play on grounds with uneven surfaces and long grass. Back then, matting used to serve as the pitch for them. Bouncers, cuts, pulls, and short-pitched deliveries were the scenes cricketers loved, and Virat spoke about all of that.”

Maine kaha, ‘Matting ki story khatam ho gayi hai, cricket bahut change ho gayi hai [The matting story is over; cricket has changed a lot]’ He said, ‘Cricket ka maza usi mein tha [The fun of cricket was in that].”

“Virat also shared an incident when he and another batter were playing on matting with thick grass all around. He hit a shot and assumed it was a boundary, but when they came together for a fist bump, the fielder ran them out,” Bhati shared.

Virat Kohli Declines Team Manager’s Offer During Ranji Trophy Camp, Wins Hearts For His Simplicity

Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli has once again shown why he is not just a great player on the field, but also a great human being off it. During the recent Ranji Trophy camp, the team manager offered Virat a separate room and other special arrangements, but the skipper politely declined the offer and chose to stay with the rest of the team.

This gesture from Virat has won the hearts of fans and fellow cricketers alike, who have praised him for his humility and simplicity. Despite being one of the biggest names in world cricket, Virat has always maintained a down-to-earth attitude and has never let his stardom get to his head.

This incident is just another example of Virat’s leadership qualities and his ability to lead by example. His selfless attitude and team-first mentality have always been admired by his teammates, and this latest incident only reinforces his reputation as a true role model in the world of cricket.

As the Indian team gears up for the upcoming cricket season, Virat’s actions off the field serve as a reminder of the values that are important in sports – teamwork, humility, and respect. Virat Kohli may be a superstar on the cricket field, but it is his simplicity and humility that truly set him apart as a leader and a role model.

Acker, who turns 26 on April 1, will be in his first career Major League Spring Training camp after spending the entire 2024 season with Double-A Frisco, going 5-4 with one save, a 3.05 ERA (33 ER/97.1 IP), and 104 strikeouts in 26 appearances/18 starts. He has registered an .823 OPS with 55 home runs and 259 RBI in 413 career minor league games, 347 of which have been with the Texas organization. See y’all there.”

I’m The Problem comes as Wallen’s preceding projects, Dangerous: The Double Album and One Thing At A Time, landed No. 1 and No. 6 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums of the 21st Century, respectively, following their blockbuster success. His third studio album, One Thing At A Time, sat atop the Billboard 200 Albums chart for 19 non-consecutive weeks – the most at No. 1 by a Country album – and yielded seven No. 1 singles at Country radio.

“I’m The Problem” follows Wallen’s latest, “Smile,” which reached No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and was lauded by Good Morning America “a moody heartbreak number.” Previous release “Lies Lies Lies” became Wallen’s 16th No. 1 at Country radio, while “Love Somebody” became Wallen’s first solo song to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Love Somebody” debuted on 11 charts globally upon release and led Wallen to become the first artist to have three singles each sit atop the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts simultaneously.

    About Miranda Lambert

Critically acclaimed groundbreaker/songwriter/superstar Miranda Lambert has defined her multi-faceted career as an artist, entertainer, entrepreneur, advocate and businesswoman with an unflinching quest for excellence, honesty and conviction. With her 10th solo studio album, Postcards from Texas, available everywhere now via Republic Records, the most-awarded artist in Academy of Country Music history, including their top honor for Entertainer of the Year, has also won three GRAMMYs and 14 Country Music Association Awards. A TIME100 honoree and perennial best-of-the-year list maker at the New York TimesTIMERolling StoneBillboardStereogumPeople and more, NPR has called her “the most riveting country star of her generation.”

A multi-dimensional superstar, she’s earned seven No. 1 solo albums, 10 No. 1 hit radio singles, more than 80 prestigious awards and countless RIAA certifications; conquered Las Vegas with her twice-extended Velvet Rodeo residency; blurred genres with Leon Bridges, the B-52s, Loretta Lynn, Enrique Iglesias, Sheryl Crow and Elle King; and delivered her LGBTQ+ inclusive anthem “Y’All Means All” for Netflix’s “Queer Eye.” Lambert has taken those standards to become a label co-founder, teaming with longtime collaborator Jon Randall to launch their own imprint, Big Loud Texas, in partnership with Big Loud Records. She is also a New York Times bestselling author and the first female restaurateur on Lower Broadway with her Tex-Mex cantina, Casa Rosa, while also expanding her creative reach with her Wanda June Home collection exclusive to Walmart and her Idyllwind clothing and boot line at Boot Barn. Her passion for rescue animals inspired the creation of her MuttNation Foundation, which has raised over $10 million since inception to promote adoption, support shelters across the country, advance spay & neuter and assist with the transport of animals during times of natural disaster.

    About Ella Langley

Ella Langley is just the kind of maverick country music needs. She’s got a rafter-reaching voice and is a straight-shootin’ songwriter who pulls no punches when it comes to life, love, and everything else under the sun. Hailing from Hope Hull, Alabama, she tirelessly gigged in bars and at local festivals before relocating to Nashville in 2019. Spiking her unfiltered true stories with unapologetic rock ‘n’ roll grit and unassuming pop appeal, she quietly emerged as a phenomenon with millions of streams and a growing fan base. Following a series of buzz-building singles and her debut EP Excuse The Mess in 2023Ella arrived at a landmark moment in her career with the release of her debut 14-track album, hungover, on August 2, 2024. Co-writing every song on the album, Ella describes these songs as raw, fun, and emotional, and a peek into her diary entries. The New York Times and Rolling Stone both named hungover as one of their Best Albums of 2024, while Music Row hailed it as “a fantastic display of the young artist’s boldness and creative assuredness.” The album includes her massive hit single “you look like you love me” featuring Riley Green, which marked Ella’s Billboard Hot 100 debut (Top 30) and received immediate widespread critical acclaim for its classic sound. The playful duet earned Ella her first No. 1 single on Country radio and madeElla the first and one of only two female artists to lead the Billboard Country Airplay Chart in 2024. The song’s worldwide popularity propelled it to No. 7 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, and Ella herself to six straight weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Emerging Artist Chart. The RIAA Platinum-certified hit recently won ‘Musical Event of the Year’ at the CMA Awards, where Ella and Riley took the stage for a fun and dynamic performance. The song has been revered as one of the best songs of 2024 by Billboard, Los Angeles Times, Cosmopolitan, Holler Country and more. On the touring front, having supported names like Jon Pardi, Randy Houser, Jamey Johnson, Riley Green, HARDY, Morgan Wallen, Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley, Ella completely sold out her first-ever headline tour in 2024 and extended the run with more already-sold-out shows in 2025. She is also set to perform as direct support on Riley Green’s 2025 North American Damn Country Music Tour. Having previously been named to several artists to watch programs and lists from All Country News, CMT, The Country Wire, Music Row, The Opry and more, Ella still has plenty up her sleeve and is no doubt one of country’s most promising new stars.
