• Johni Broome injury: No. 1 Auburn’s national player of the year candidate returns vs. Tennessee

    NCAA Basketball: Tennessee at Auburn
    USATSI

Auburn star big man Johni Broome returned to the No. 1 Tigers for Saturday’s showdown vs. No. 6 Tennessee after missing his team’s last two games with an ankle injury. Broome was deemed a game-time decision heading into the week and was listed as questionable to play on the official SEC Student-Athlete Availability Report, but entered the game with 17:20 remaining in the first half to applause from the sold-out crowd at Neville Arena.

Broome was the favorite to win national player of the year before going down with an injury against South Carolina earlier this month. The fifth-year senior is averaging 17.9 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists for the No. 1 ranked team in the country. Auburn is the only team in the SEC (5-0) that has yet to lose in conference play.

Broome twisted his ankle with 13:45 remaining in Auburn’s narrow 66-63 win on the road over South Carolina on Jan. 11 and had to be carried off the court. Broome officially suffered a lower-ankle injury (instead of an upper-ankle injury), which could’ve led to a longer rehab process.

The injury against South Carolina wasn’t the first time Broome exited a game this season following an injury scare. Just three minutes into a win over Georgia State last month, Broome checked out with an apparent injury to his right shoulder. He underwent an MRI but was cleared to return for the team’s next game against Purdue.

The Tigers have won their last 10 games since losing to Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium in the ACC/SEC Men’s Challenge last month.

    This story will be updated

After a brief scare with an injury, Johni Broome, the national player of the year candidate from No. 1 Auburn, is set to make his return to the court against Tennessee. Broome, who has been a dominant force for the Tigers all season, suffered a minor injury in their last game but has recovered quickly and will be back in action for this crucial matchup.

Broome’s presence on the court has been instrumental in Auburn’s success this season, as he leads the team in scoring, rebounding, and shot-blocking. His ability to dominate in the paint and alter shots on the defensive end has made him a standout player and a frontrunner for national player of the year honors.

With Broome back in the lineup, Auburn will look to continue their impressive run and secure another win against a tough Tennessee team. His return will undoubtedly boost the team’s chances of coming out on top and solidifying their position as the top-ranked team in the country.

Fans of the Tigers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Broome will be back on the court and ready to make an impact once again. His presence will be crucial as Auburn looks to maintain their spot at the top of the college basketball world and make a deep run in the upcoming postseason.

  • Report: Matt Eberflus ‘Prime Candidate’ for Cowboys DC Job Under Brian Schottenheimer | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

Former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus is a “prime candidate” to become the Dallas Cowboys’ next defensive coordinator after the team officially promoted ex-offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach on Friday.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the news.

    Jeremy Fowler @JFowlerESPN

Sources consider former #Bears head coach Matt Eberflus a prime candidate for the #Cowboys defensive coordinator job under new coach Brian Schottenheimer, per sources. Eberflus was a Cowboys assistant from 2011-17. pic.twitter.com/tIPvtLA6II

Eberflus was Dallas’ linebackers coach from 2011-2017, adding passing game coordinator duties in 2016 and 2017. He then worked as the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive coordinator for four seasons before the Bears hired him as their head coach in 2022. Eberflus went 14-32 in two-plus campaigns before Chicago parted ways with him on Nov. 29, 2024.

Indianapolis’ defenses fared well under Eberflus, finishing top 10 in scoring in three of his four years there. Obviously, things didn’t work out in Chicago, but Eberflus could easily land on his feet quickly amid links to the Cowboys.

It’s clear Cowboys owner Jerry Jones respects Eberflus from his time in Dallas before, and now he’ll the leading candidate to be in charge of a talented defense that vastly underperformed last year, allowing the second-most points in football (468).

Dallas was in search of a new coaching staff after parting ways with head coach Mike McCarthy after five seasons. The Cowboys brought Schottenheimer in as a consultant before hiring him as the offensive coordinator in 2023. Dallas finished first in scoring in 2023 but fell to 21st in 2024.

His hiring was ultimately a surprise considering that Schottenheimer has struggled at previous OC stops, coupled with the fact that he’s never been a head coach before.

However, Dallas is rolling with him, and now it appears Eberflus will lead a defense that sorely needs to improve after last year’s performance.

According to reports, Matt Eberflus is considered a prime candidate for the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator position under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Eberflus, who is currently the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts, has been praised for his work in developing a strong defense in Indianapolis.

Eberflus has a strong track record in the NFL, having previously served as the linebackers coach for the Cowboys from 2011-2017. During his time in Dallas, Eberflus helped develop players like Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith into top-tier linebackers.

With the Cowboys looking to revamp their defense after a disappointing season, Eberflus could be the perfect fit to lead the unit. His experience and success in the league make him a top candidate for the job.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Cowboys continue their search for a new defensive coordinator.

  • 49ers news: Pete Carroll is a candidate for defensive coordinator

Two weeks into their offseason, the San Francisco 49ers have yet to fill their defensive coordinator vacancy. They have been relatively quiet about interviewing candidates for the position.

Thus far, there have only been two interviews: Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh and Detroit Lions assistant Deshea Townsend. But, apart from that, there have been crickets on the defensive coordinator end, and things took a turn on Wednesday.

Saleh, who is perceived to be the favorite for the job now, has been conducting head coaching interviews with a few organizations this season as he looks to get back on his feet after being fired from New York this offseason. And there may be one true team emerging as his next destination.

The Jacksonville Jaguars took a hit on Wednesday, as Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who was seen as a healthy favorite for the job, elected to withdraw from the Jaguars head coach opening. That move took away a strong offensive assistant for quarterback Trevor Lawrence to work with, leaving the Jaguars with Saleh and longtime NFL defensive coordinator Patrick Graham as the candidates who have earned second interviews so far.

With Saleh potentially gone, San Francisco’s plan at defensive coordinator has seemingly backfired, as they had put all of their chips in to bring back the familiar face, and now they may have to pivot elsewhere.

Enter another familiar face: former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, who was linked to San Francisco’s vacancy on Wednesday.

“[As] the 49ers anxiously wait for the outcome of Saleh’s interview with Jacksonville for the Jaguars’ head-coaching vacancy, I’ve heard that [Pete] Carroll’s name has come up inside 49ers HQ as an interesting idea, at least,” SF Standard’s Tim Kawakami wrote. “But the 49ers also have to wait out things with Carroll, who, according to The Athletic, could be the Raiders’ No. 1 choice now that Ben Johnson has taken the Chicago Bears’ job.”

Carroll is an entirely different type of candidate. The longtime NFL head coach has significant experience running a team and is still involved in head coach searches, such as the Las Vegas Raiders vacancy.

The 49ers have dipped into Carroll’s pool of former assistants in the past, hiring Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator from 2017 to 20.

But getting Carroll himself would be a much different dynamic. It would provide San Francisco with not only a strong defensive mind but also a coordinator who could help head coach Kyle Shanahan with both weekly game planning and in-game decisions.

The main question: is the move realistic for both sides?

Carroll should get some head coaching interviews and could very well select his next destination soon as vacancies fill up. San Francisco cannot afford to put all of its eggs into one basket again and come up short, especially if Robert Saleh takes a head coaching job, as a ton of candidates are currently heading off the board.

So, we’ll see if the 49ers conduct an interview here and if other candidates begin to get involved in the process. Nonetheless, the idea of hiring Carroll is certainly intriguing, and there appears to be talk inside the building about pursuing that option.

In a surprising turn of events, it has been reported that former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is being considered as a candidate for the defensive coordinator position with the San Francisco 49ers.

Carroll, who led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory in 2014 and multiple playoff appearances during his tenure, is known for his aggressive defensive schemes and ability to develop young talent. His experience and success in the NFL make him an intriguing option for the 49ers, who are looking to bolster their defense after a disappointing season.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, the possibility of Carroll joining the 49ers coaching staff has already generated excitement among fans and analysts. If he does end up in San Francisco, it could be a game-changer for the team’s defense and help them get back on track in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Trent Baalke, Jaguars Trolled by Fans After Another HC Candidate Rejects Job

The Jacksonville Jaguars may not have kicked the right person out of the building this past offseason.

The Jaguars parted ways with head coach Doug Pederson after a disappointing 4-13 season but curiously chose to retain general manager Trent Baalke, who has been with the franchise since 2021.

Over his past four seasons with the Jaguars, Baalke has won just 25 games in total. His last double-digit win season as GM of a team occurred over a decade ago in 2013, when he worked for the San Francisco 49ers.

In the wake of the Pederson sacking, the Jaguars have interviewed a handful of head coaching candidates, and two of the league’s most coveted names have already turned them down: Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who is reportedly staying with the Bucs, and former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who recently joined the Chicago Bears.

NFL fans are starting to think the Jaguars just aren’t a top attraction for coaches this hiring cycle, and the reason for that starts at the top with Baalke.

Jaguars fans are feeling frustrated and disappointed after yet another head coaching candidate has rejected the team’s offer. Trent Baalke, the Jaguars’ general manager, is facing backlash from fans who are questioning his ability to attract top coaching talent.

The latest rejection came from Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, who reportedly turned down the Jaguars’ offer to become their next head coach. This comes after the team was also rejected by San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who ultimately accepted the head coaching position with the New York Jets.

Fans took to social media to voice their frustration, with many criticizing Baalke for his handling of the coaching search. Some fans even went as far as to call for Baalke to be fired, citing his track record of poor decision-making and inability to attract top coaching talent.

Despite the setbacks, the Jaguars are still in search of their next head coach and are reportedly considering other candidates. However, fans are understandably skeptical and are hoping for a change in leadership that will bring success to the struggling franchise.

  • 49ers news: Candidate withdraws name from Jagaurs; Robert Saleh the new favorite

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen is taking himself out of the running for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching job to stay with Tampa Bay on a new contract to make Coen one of the highest-paid coordinators in the NFL.

This comes in the same week that Coen was supposed to have his second in-person interview for the Jaguars’ vacant head coaching position. As of now, Jacksonville has two candidates.

One is 45-year-old Patrick Graham, who has been in the NFL since 2009 and served as the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins in 2019, New York Giants from 2020-2021, and the Las Vegas Raiders since 2022. Now, Graham hasn’t exactly been with teams who have a winning pedigree. In fact, you’d argue his history and lack of winning — or success on the offensive side of the ball at the stops he’s been at — would be a deteriminet to a team looking for structure around Trevor Lawrence.

The second candidate is good ol’ Robert Saleh. He didn’t exactly turn the New York Jets into the Greatest Show on Turf. But Saleh has over three years of head coaching experience and was one of the most successful defensive coordinators during his time with the San Francisco 49ers. Plus, he’s well-connected. It didn’t take long for the Green Bay Packers to hire Saleh as a consultant.

Saleh is likely being asked what his plan is on offense and whether he’d bring in a Kyle Shanahan disciple to run the Jaguars offense. One would think he has the upper hand over Graham.

If that’s the case, we might see more interviews for the Niners’ defensive coordinator position after they were reportedly ready to offer Saleh the job. It’s also a reason we talked about waiting for Saleh could potentially backfire.

Of course, Jacksonville could expand its search. The Baltimore Ravens just lost in the playoffs, and offensive coordinator Todd Monken is a popular name during this hiring cycle. The same is true for Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady — two names that may excite the Jaguars more than a defensive mind.

In the latest 49ers news, a potential candidate has withdrawn their name from consideration for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching position. This development has now put current San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as the new favorite for the job.

After a successful season with the 49ers, Saleh has garnered significant interest from multiple teams looking to fill their head coaching vacancies. His leadership and defensive expertise have made him a highly sought-after candidate in the coaching carousel.

While Saleh has not officially been offered the Jaguars job, his emergence as the frontrunner is a promising sign for his coaching future. The 49ers will undoubtedly be monitoring the situation closely as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story and the impact it may have on the 49ers coaching staff.

  • Former Titans Coach Leading Candidate for Patriots Job

A former member of the Tennessee Titans coaching staff could be in to land a significant job extremely soon.

According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the New England Patriots are expected to target current Detroit Lions defensive line coordinator/assistant head coach Terrell Williams.

Williams recently joined aboard in Detroit for the 2024 season but was formerly with the Titans from 2018 to 2023 as their defensive line coordinator. Within his time stationed in Tennessee, the team had three playoff appearances, winning the division for two of them.

During that stint, Williams had some considerable success with the team’s defensive line. In his six-year stretch with the franchise, he helped hold opposing teams to 10,444 rushing yards, which ranks fourth among the NFL during that period. He also was a part of some solid seasons individually by the Titans’ defensive line, helping develop the likes of Denico Autry and Jeffery Simmons.

If hired in New England, Williams will join alongside Titans’ former head coach Mike Vrabel to help man the defensive side of the football, reuniting with his former lead during his time in Tennessee.

Nothing’s quite official on the hiring front just yet, all signs seem to be hinting at another Titans coaching mind headed to help kickstart a new regime in Foxborough. Expect the dust to settle in the coming days.

Make sure you bookmark Tennessee Titans on SI for the latest news, exclusive interviews, film breakdowns and so much more!

According to reports, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is a leading candidate for the New England Patriots head coaching position. Vrabel, who played for the Patriots from 2001 to 2008 and won three Super Bowls with the team, has been praised for his leadership and defensive coaching abilities.

Many believe that Vrabel’s experience as a player under Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, as well as his success as a head coach with the Titans, make him a strong candidate to take over the reins in New England. Vrabel led the Titans to the playoffs in three out of his four seasons as head coach, including an AFC Championship appearance in 2019.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, it will be interesting to see if Vrabel ends up returning to the team where he began his NFL career. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Bucs’ Liam Coen emerging as strongest candidate for Jaguars job

TAMPA — When Baker Mayfield learned that Liam Coen was going to interview for the Jaguars head coaching job a couple weeks ago, he began devising ways to keep him in Tampa Bay.

“It’s going to come down to a one-on-one at (TPC) Sawgrass for him to decide whether he actually takes the interview,” said Mayfield, laughing.

Well, this is no joking matter for the Bucs anymore.

Coen could be offered the Jaguars head coaching job, possibly as early as Wednesday when he interviews for the second time with the club. Doug Pederson was fired after three seasons and a 4-13 record in 2024.

Jacksonville also has scheduled second interviews with Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham on Thursday and former Jets coach Robert Saleh on Friday.

But there’s a growing belief that it’s Coen’s job to lose. Not only were the Jaguars impressed with the 39-year-old offensive coordinator when he interviewed virtually a week ago, he’s also most equipped to resurrect the career of quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

The best evidence is what he did for Mayfield, who set career highs with 4,500 yards passing and 41 touchdowns and completed 71% of his passes in his first full season under Coen.

If Coen leaves, the Bucs would have to hire their fourth offensive coordinator in as many seasons under head coach Todd Bowles.

In January 2024, Dave Canales was hired as the Panthers head coach after only one season calling plays for the Bucs. (Canales had replaced Byron Leftwich with the Bucs.)

Would the Bucs offer head coach Todd Bowles, 61, a position in the front office and hire Coen to take his place?

It’s been done before. In March 2022, just a couple weeks after Tom Brady ended a 40-day retirement, Bruce Arians announced he was stepping down as Bucs head coach to become the senior assistant to general manager Jason Licht while Bowles assumed head coaching duties.

Coen is the architect of one of the most productive offenses in club history.

The Bucs averaged 29.5 points per game and 6.2 yards per play. And Coen improved the Bucs’ rushing attack, which ranked last in the NFL the previous two seasons, to fourth overall.

Rookie running back Bucky Irving became the first Tampa Bay player to rush for 1,000 yards and Mike Evans went over 1,000 receiving yards for an 11th straight season, tying Jerry Rice for the NFL record.

Saleh is a culture builder but a defensive coach who would have to build a staff to include someone who could help Lawrence. Same thing with Graham, who is a defensive playcaller.

The Jaguars signed Lawrence to a five-year, $275 million contract extension in June 2024, one of the largest in NFL history.

This season, he played in only 10 games and passed for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in the midst of their search for a new head coach, and all signs are pointing to Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator Liam Coen as the strongest candidate for the job.

Coen has been instrumental in the Bucs’ high-powered offense this season, helping quarterback Tom Brady lead the team to the top of the league in passing yards per game. His innovative play-calling and ability to maximize the talents of his players have not gone unnoticed by the Jaguars’ front office.

With a young and talented roster in Jacksonville, Coen’s offensive expertise could be just what the team needs to take the next step towards becoming a playoff contender. His reputation as a rising star in the coaching ranks has garnered interest from multiple teams, but it seems that the Jaguars are leading the pack in pursuing his services.

If Coen does indeed land the job in Jacksonville, fans can expect an exciting and dynamic offense that will keep opposing defenses on their toes. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Jaguars continue their search for their next head coach.

  • Mike Kafka emerges as top Saints coaching candidate with second interview

One of these mornings, Mike Kafka might wake up and find himself an NFL head coach.

The Giants’ 37-year-old offensive coordinator first spoke with Saints’ brass last week and is now being flown down to The Big Easy for a second interview on Tuesday, NFL.com reported.

As New Orleans whittles down its list of candidates for the 19th head coach in franchise history, Kafka and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver — scheduled for a second-round interview Wednesday, also per NFL.com — have emerged as leading contenders.

Kafka, a member of the Giants’ coaching staff since Brian Daboll took over in 2022, is no stranger to this process — he’s been a finalist for three jobs in the previous two cycles.

New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka answers questions from reporters during a practice on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024. Noah K. Murray-NY Post

The former journeyman quarterback saw his coaching stock soar after his first season leading the Giants’ offense in 2022.

Just one year after finishing 4-13, Daniel Jones and company collected nine wins — the Giants’ most since 2016 — made the playoffs as a wild-card team and then beat the Minnesota Vikings, 31-24, in the opening round.

Jones, then in his fourth season, threw 15 touchdowns to just five interceptions and seemed to be turning a corner. His efforts were indubitably bolstered by Saquon Barkley’s work in the backfield, as the then-25-year-old amassed 1,312 yards and ten touchdowns in the regular season.

But as Giants fans know all too well, the metamorphosis into 2023 and beyond was not a pretty one.

The Giants’ offense tumbled noticeably the following season, ranking 30th in scoring and 29th in total yards — a drop-off of 14 and 11 spots, respectively, from the marks set a year prior.

This past season was even worse as the Giants finished 31st in scoring and 30th in total yards.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll walks through the team’s facilities in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post

Despite the steadily declining offensive production, Kafka remains of interest to a number of teams with young quarterbacks under development.

In New Orleans, where the Derek Carr experiment has gone from bad to worse, it seems as though Spencer Rattler, 24, will find himself under center sooner rather than later.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler (18) throws a pass during the first half of an NFL game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January 2025. AP

The soon-to-be sophomore wouldn’t be Kafka’s first pet project.

Prior to joining the Giants’ staff, he served as the quarterbacks coach in Kansas City from 2018 to 2021 — overlapping with Patrick Mahomes’ first four seasons as the Chiefs’ starting signal caller.

And after Kansas City won Super Bowl LIV in 2020, Kafka had the title of passing game coordinator added to his resume.

Over the following two seasons, the Chiefs went on to win four more playoff games and Mahomes earned his third and fourth consecutive Pro Bowl honors.

Kafka was given the additional title of assistant head coach for the Giants in February 2024.

The New Orleans Saints are in the midst of their search for a new head coach, and it looks like they may have found their top candidate. Mike Kafka, the current offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, has emerged as the favorite for the position after a successful second interview with the team.

Kafka, a former NFL quarterback who has quickly risen through the coaching ranks, has been instrumental in the Chiefs’ high-powered offense over the past few seasons. His innovative play-calling and ability to develop young quarterbacks have caught the attention of the Saints’ front office, who are looking for a coach to help lead their team into the future.

While nothing has been officially announced yet, many insiders believe that Kafka is the frontrunner for the job and could be the next head coach of the Saints. His second interview went well, and it seems like he has the support of key decision-makers within the organization.

If Kafka does indeed become the Saints’ new head coach, fans can expect an exciting and dynamic offense that will continue to compete at a high level in the NFC South. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Aaron Glenn A HC Candidate In Dallas?

Compared to the other open head coaching positions, we have heard relatively little about the possibilities in Dallas. So far, the names connected to the Cowboys are few and far between as the team has interviewed just two candidates and only has one other interview on the schedule. That makes it noteworthy to see Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports reporting Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as “a name to watch closely” in connection to the job.

Like his coworker on the offensive side of the ball in Detroit, Glenn’s name has been an extremely popular one in multiple searches for a new head coach around the league. He has been mentioned as a candidate for every other open position, already having interviewed with the Jets (1/9), Raiders (1/10), Saints (1/10), Bears (1/11), and Jaguars (1/11) and declining an interview with the Patriots. While New York has reportedly been extremely interested in adding the 52-year-old to lead their staff, so far, the Saints have been heavily linked as a favorite to land Glenn.

Dallas, on the other hand, has been fairly inactive in their search after they got a late start on the process. They’ve interviewed their former quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator and current Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore (1/17) and former Jets head coach Robert Saleh (1/18), and they have an interview scheduled with former Vikings head coach and current Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier for Monday. They’ve shown interest in two collegiate head coaches, but North Carolina’s Bill Belichick remains committed to the Tar Heels, and the interest in Colorado’s Deion Sanders has not resulted in anything substantial as of yet.

A Houston native, Glenn played for four of the teams with open jobs (Jets, Cowboys, Jaguars, and Saints) as a cornerback in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The proximity of Dallas and New Orleans to his hometown could be factors in their relevance during his job search, as well. He also spent time on the coaching staff in New Orleans for five seasons as defensive backs coach before landing the coordinator job in Detroit.

Glenn is perhaps the most sought-after coach in this coaching cycle, as evidenced by his connection to every open job so far. The Cowboys will need to make up some ground on a number of teams that have over a week’s head start on courting Glenn in order to contend for his services. Team owner/president/general manager Jerry Jones, though, reportedly holds Glenn in “especially high regard,” so their pursuit may be starting soon.

Could Aaron Glenn Be the Next Head Coach Candidate for the Dallas Cowboys?

There has been much speculation surrounding the Dallas Cowboys’ search for a new head coach after the departure of Jason Garrett. One name that has been gaining traction as a potential candidate is Aaron Glenn, the current defensive backs coach for the New Orleans Saints.

Glenn, a former NFL cornerback who played for teams such as the New York Jets, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, and New Orleans Saints, has been praised for his work with the Saints’ secondary. Under his guidance, players like Marshon Lattimore and Marcus Williams have developed into standout performers.

Given the Cowboys’ struggles on defense in recent years, Glenn’s experience and success in coaching defensive backs could make him an attractive option for the head coaching job. Additionally, his ties to the organization as a former player could also work in his favor.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, it will be interesting to see if Aaron Glenn emerges as a serious contender for the head coaching position in Dallas. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Which Coaching Candidate Had a Stellar Interview With Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars have had a busy two weeks, conducting interviews with 10 different coaches as of this writing in their search for a new head coach.

Among those nine interviews — most of which were held virtually — it does appear that some coaches have had standout performances.

One coach who had a particularly strong interview appears to be Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who is fresh off an immensely impressive season in which he led Tampa Bay’s offense to several top-5 rankings.

“Liam Coen was nothing short of outstanding in his interview,” a senior NFL executive told Jacksonville Jaguars on Sports Illustrated.

“His knowledge of the game, both offensively and defensively, was eye-opening, as well as his handles on the responsibilities and how he would lead a franchise.”

As the Jaguars enter round two of interviews with candidates next week, it would appear likely Coen draws a second interview from Jacksonville — this time in person, as NFL rules mandate candidates can not speak in person until Jan. 20.

With the Buccaneers now out of the playoffs, Coen is free to be hired at any time. The Jaguars are known to be methodical and patient in their searches for head coaches, however, and many things could hinge on the result of the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders game.

If the Lions win, then offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn can not speak with teams in person until the week after the conference championship games. If the Lions lose, then they could be eligible to speak in person to teams as soon as Monday.

This could be especially important for the Jaguars since Johnson and Glenn have both been tied to the Jaguars job at different points. According to the senior NFL executive who spoke with Jacksonville Jaguars on Sports Illustrated, it would appear Coen and Johnson are near the top of the Jaguars’ list for Doug Pederson’s replacement — especially after Coen’s stellar first interview.

“Nobody I spoke to in that organization was anything other than impressed, and I think it would be safe to say him and Ben Johnson are 1A and 1B on their shortlist,” he said.
