  • Arsenal win appeal against Lewis-Skelly’s red card at Wolves as ban overturned | Arsenal

Arsenal have won their appeal against Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card at Wolves, with the Football Association confirming that an independent regulatory commission had “upheld the claim of wrongful dismissal” and removed his three-match ban.

The 18-year-old was shown a straight red card by the referee Michael Oliver in the first half of Arsenal’s 1-0 win after bringing down Matt Doherty in his own half, becoming the third-youngest player to be dismissed in Premier League history. Mikel Arteta said he was “absolutely fuming” with the decision, which was checked and confirmed by the video assistant referee, Darren England.

Arsenal appealed on Tuesday afternoon and were informed within hours that it had been successful.

“An independent regulatory commission has upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal in relation to Myles Lewis-Skelly and removed his three-match suspension,” a statement from the FA said. “The Arsenal player was sent off for serious foul play during their Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, January 25, 2025.”

The referees’ body, Professional Game Match Officials Limited, said it was appalled by the “abhorrent abuse”, including death threats, that Oliver and his family have received since the game. The 39-year-old’s home is reportedly under police guard.

He will not take charge of Arsenal’s game at home against Manchester City on Sunday but will officiate Ipswich v Southampton on Saturday. Before that, Oliver will be in charge for the Champions League match between Barcelona and Atalanta on Wednesday night, when Arsenal travel to Girona.

Lewis-Skelly’s red card was the fourth Arsenal have received this season, although Arteta had expressed confidence it would be rescinded without an appeal, as occurred when a Bruno Fernandes red card against Tottenham overturned earlier in the season.

“I am absolutely fuming but I leave it with you,” he said. “I think it is that obvious that we don’t need any comment today and hopefully the right thing will happen. There is a really good precedent, what happened with Bruno this season as well. OK, we were in a position that we shouldn’t be in, at least let’s be in a position that we should be in for the next few weeks and allow that player to continue to his job.”

Arsenal fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the club has successfully won their appeal against the red card shown to Kieran Lewis-Skelly during their match against Wolves. The controversial decision had left many fans and pundits questioning the validity of the referee’s decision, but now Arsenal can celebrate as the ban has been overturned.

Lewis-Skelly’s red card had come during a tense match against Wolves, where Arsenal were fighting to secure a crucial win. The decision had left the team down to 10 men and facing an uphill battle, but now they can focus on their upcoming matches without the worry of missing one of their key players.

Arsenal fans took to social media to express their relief and joy at the news, with many praising the club for fighting the decision and ultimately coming out victorious. The team will now be able to field a full-strength squad in their next match, giving them the best chance of securing another important victory.

Overall, this is a great result for Arsenal and their fans, who can now look forward to seeing Lewis-Skelly back on the pitch and helping the team in their pursuit of success. Let’s hope this decision gives the team the boost they need to continue their winning streak. #Arsenal #LewisSkelly #RedCardAppealWon #Victory #Relief.

  • Carlo Ancelotti slams ‘inexplicable’ red card call, player ‘sorry’ for foul

Carlo Ancelotti branded the decision to not send off Espanyol‘s Carlos Romero — who later went on to score the only goal in his team’s 1-0 win over Real Madrid — as “inexplicable” on Saturday, after the defender apologised for his challenge on Kylian Mbappé.

Romero was shown a yellow card by referee Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz for his foul on Mbappé in the 61st minute, bringing down the Madrid forward with a tackle from behind as he broke away on the counter attack.

The defender later went on to score a dramatic 85th minute winner, with the defeat leaving leaders Real just one point clear of rivals Atlético Madrid at the top of the LaLiga table.

“The decision the referee and the VAR took is inexplicable,” Ancelotti told a post-match news conference. “Everyone saw it. The most important thing is to protect the player. It’s a clear foul, a very ugly challenge. Fortunately nothing happened in terms of an injury, but the VAR is there for that. It’s inexplicable to us that he didn’t show a red card.”

Speaking after the final whistle, Romero said he had apologised to Mbappé.

“I knew that it’s impossible to stop [Mbappé] on the run,” he told DAZN. “I did what I could to stop him. The challenge was a bit ugly, I didn’t like that, and I said sorry to him.”

Espanyol coach Manolo González said there had been no intent on Romero’s part to injure Mbappé.

“It was a tough challenge, but it was meant to stop the counterattack, not to hurt the opponent,” González told DAZN.

Madrid were also angered by the first-half decision to disallow a Vinícius Júnior goal for a foul by Mbappé.

“The game was difficult,” Ancelotti admitted. “We did some things well. We had control, above all in the second half, and we had chances. We had a goal ruled out, we hit the woodwork. We had 20 shots on goal. Espanyol played well in transitions, defended well, they caught us out of shape and they scored.”

Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger was withdrawn with an injury in the 15th minute, ahead of a run of games which will see Madrid play Leganés in a Copa del Rey quarterfinal, before hosting rivals Atlético in the derby next Saturday, and then visiting Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League knockout phase playoff.

The team are already without Dani Carvajal and Éder Militão in defence — while David Alaba has only just returned from a long-term absence — with the transfer window set to close on Monday.

“Rudiger has a muscular injury, now we’ll have to assess it,” Ancelotti said. “We’ve talked about [signings], we’ve thought about it and we know what we have to do.”

Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Everton, has expressed his frustration with the referee’s decision to give a red card to one of his players in their recent match. The player in question has also issued an apology for his actions.

In a post-match press conference, Ancelotti slammed the red card call as ‘inexplicable’ and questioned the referee’s judgment. He believed that the decision had a significant impact on the outcome of the game and felt that it was unfair to his team.

The player who received the red card also spoke out, expressing his remorse for the foul that led to his sending off. He acknowledged that his actions were reckless and apologized to his teammates, the fans, and the coaching staff.

Despite the setback, Ancelotti remains confident in his team’s ability to bounce back from this defeat. He is determined to learn from this experience and focus on improving their performance in future matches.

Overall, this incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of football and the importance of maintaining composure in high-pressure situations. Ancelotti and his team will now look to regroup and continue their pursuit of success in the remainder of the season.

  •  WWE Royal Rumble 2025 predictions, odds and full match card

One Royal Rumble match feels as unpredictable as ever and the other appears to have one truly logical choice for who punches their ticket to a world championship chance in a main event at WrestleMania.

Careers with be made at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday (6 p.m. Peacock) as the road to WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas begins.

Royal Rumble winners can be one of the potentially most polarizing — or sometimes universally loved decisions WWE can make.

The Post’s pro wrestling columnist Joseph Staszewski tries his best to predict how it will all play out when the bell rings.

2025 WWE Royal Rumble full match card

DIY (Johny Gargano and Tomas Ciampa) over Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelly and Chris Sabin) to retain the WWE tag team championships (Two-Out-Of-Three Falls)

Motor City Machine Guns have been a breath of fresh air to the WWE tag team division and just the fact that a two-out-of-three falls championship match is on a major premium live event is a big step forward over the past year-plus in the division.

DIY took the belts off MCMG in early January as Gargano deceived them with kindness before ultimately turning heel with Ciampa for the first time. Since then, DIY has been using Pretty Deadly to run interference to keep MCMG away from their championships — including them crashing the team’s last match on the Dec. 6 SmackDown.

While Pretty Deadly keeps getting warned they are being played — with DIY dangling an eventual title shot for them — they moved closer to fully accepting it on SmackDown.

This could go either way based on whatever decision Pretty Deadly makes to likely decide the match in the third fall. The story still feels like has legs and places to explore so WWE won’t take the titles for DIY yet.

Cody Rhodes over Kevin Owens to retain the Undisputed WWE championship (Ladder match)

It’s a shame Kevin Owens’ fine work won’t be rewarded with a legitimate world title run — though he’s gotten to masquerade as one with the famed Winged Eagle championship for more than a month since claiming he beat Rhodes at “Saturday Night’s Main Event.”

You don’t pull the trigger on a title change to the heel in the third match of the trilogy before Rhodes can go into WrestleMania 41 with a full year as champion. What’s important here is how Rhodes wins and so many things are possible in a ladder match — with the “American Nightmare” seemingly in a heel turn spiral.

Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens will complete the trilogy at the Royal Rumble. Getty Images

Owens has already, in so many words, told Sami Zayn he expects him to have his back and help him win so they can face each other at WrestleMania. It is also possible Randy Orton — whom Owens piled drive to take him off TV in the storyline for months — comes back and cost his former tag team partner the match. Whatever happens, Owens will be off to his next feud — against either Zayn or Orton.

Charlotte Flair wins the Women’s Royal Rumble

Betting Favorites: Charlotte Flair 1/2, Iyo Sky 2/1, Becky Lynch 3/1, Bianca Belair 4/1, Jade Cargill 5/1 Jordynne Grace 15/2 (Paddy Power)

WWE only seemed to start caring about the Women’s Royal Rumble when it had Liv Morgan, Raquel Rodriguez, Bianca Belair, Naomi and Nia Jax — for a second time — declare for the match in one segment on SmackDown last week in front of both world champions as they join Bayley and Iyo Sky in the match.

Charlotte Flair makes her injury return at the Royal Rumble. WWE

Charlotte Flair did get a special vignette calling herself the GOAT to announce her return for the Royal Rumble from a serious knee injury after more than a year out of action. WWE Women’s champion Tiffany Stratton hasn’t been shy about wanting a dream match with Flair that is absolutely WrestleMania worthy.

Belair, who won the Royal Rumble in 2021 and went on to beat Sasha Banks at WrestleMania, feels like one of two wild cards in this match because fans have wanted to see her versus Women’s World champion Rhea Ripley for years at WrestleMania and WWE has teased it on occasion. She also would be a fantastic opponent for Stratton as the champ can make the case she is bigger, faster and stronger than the EST. The other is former TNA Knockouts champion Jordynne Grace. She would be a fantastic fresh face for Ripley to square off with.

Outside of the idea of Jax or Morgan winning to get their title rematches, the list of viable candidates feels thin. Becky Lynch — if she returns — has already feuded with Stratton and Ripley. Bayley appears headed for a program for Roxanne Perez. Jade Cargill facing her mystery attacker feel like her WrestleMania story.

Flair is the logical choice after WWE called her The GOAT in her vignette, re-establish that and capitalize on the good feelings around her return to set up to dream match with Stratton.

John Cena wins the Men’s Royal Rumble

Betting Favorites: CM Punk: 1/1, John Cena 7/4, Roman Reigns 10/3, Seth Rollins 5/1, The Rock 9/1, Drew McIntyre 9/1 (Paddy Power).

The men’s Royal Rumble is stacked and could be John Cena’s to lose.

The 16-time world champion is on the star-studded list of wrestlers who have declared for the match, including Roman Reigns, CM Punk, Drew McIntyre, Seth Rollins, Jey Uso and Sami Zayn. All of them would be fine WrestleMania main eventers — with Cena as the betting favorite as he begins his retirement tour.

John Cena kicks of his yearlong retirement tour at the Royal Rumble. WWE

As significant as it would be to beat Gunther for the World Heavyweight championship, the Royal Rumble should be about going on to challenge for the more prestigious title in Cody Rhodes’ Undisputed WWE championship. If you look at the list, really only Cena, Punk and Reigns make sense to do that — unless The Rock or Randy Orton make an unexpected appearance.

Rhodes considers Cena a mentor and the two are close, So the protegee standing between the mentor Cena and breaking Ric Flair’s record with a 17th world reign would be very intriguing. Rhodes’ character appears to be in the early stages of a heel turn and maybe an interaction with Cena accelerates that.

CM Punk is looking to win his first Royal Rumble. Getty Images

Punk and Rhodes beautifully laid out the tension among the two friends that could carry their story to close Raw this week. Reigns winning would give us the same WrestleMania main event for three straight years — though maybe Punk forces it to become a triple-threat match via the favor he is owned by Paul Heyman.

Also keep an eye on the side plots going on between McIntyre, Rollins, Punk, Uso and Zayn — all have been connected one way or the other over the past year as an interesting Bloodline subplot has been brewing.

If there are surprises, I expect them from the TNA side after the announced partnership between the two brands earlier this month. Nic Nemeth, Joe Hendry and Moose all feel like potential names to look out for as is a potential A.J. Styles return.

A match between the WWE’s two biggest babyfaces in the past 20 years feels too good to pass up and lets the other pieces — Punk vs. Roman Reigns and Gunther vs. Logal Paul — easily fall into place at WrestleMania.

With the WWE Royal Rumble just around the corner, fans are buzzing with excitement and anticipation for one of the biggest events of the year. As the road to WrestleMania begins, here are some predictions, odds, and the full match card for the WWE Royal Rumble 2025:

    Predictions:
    – The Royal Rumble match winner: Roman Reigns is the favorite to win the men’s Royal Rumble match, while Bianca Belair is predicted to win the women’s Royal Rumble match.

    Odds:
    – Roman Reigns: 2/1
    – Brock Lesnar: 3/1
    – Bianca Belair: 2/1
    – Drew McIntyre: 4/1
    – Becky Lynch: 3/1

The first major wrestling event of 2025 is here as WWE has descended upon Indianapolis for this year’s Royal Rumble. Considered one of the tent-pole events on the calendar, the 30-person battle royal is always filled with plenty of drama and surprises.

As is always the case, the winner of the Rumble punches their ticket to main event WrestleMania and challenge for a world championship.

This year’s men’s Royal Rumble is expected to have plenty of drama and surprises. Among those confirmed as entrants are John Cena, Roman Reigns, CM Punk, Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre and more. But there are still 15 slots that are to be determined and WWE CCO Paul Levesque said you can expect plenty of wildness on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The women’s Rumble match will also have plenty of both, and even more given that only 10 entrants have been announced. But among the most notable is the return of Charlotte Flair after more than a year away to recover from a nasty knee injury.

There are only two matches beyond the Rumbles on the card for Saturday, but they are sure to deliver the excitement. WWE undisputed champion Cody Rhodes puts his title on the line against friend turned foe Kevin Owens in a ladder match. Plus, the WWE tag team championships are on the line when titleholders #DIY take on Motor City Machine Guns in a two-out-of-three falls match.

The event takes place Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It streams live on Peacock on Feb. 1 with the main card starting at 6 p.m. ET.

    2025 WWE Royal Rumble matches

Men’s Royal Rumble match (LA Knight, John Cena, CM Punk, Jey Uso, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, Rey Mysterio, Sami Zayn, Shinsuke Nakamura, Logan Paul, Penta, Chad Gable, Bron Breakker, Carmelo Hayes, 15 TBA): This match is shaping up to be an incredible showing. So many legends are filling out the entrants list and each has a unique story as to why they would make sense as the winner. Cena, Reigns, Punk, Rollins and McIntyre are all plausible favorites to walk away victorious and main event WrestleMania in April.

Women’s Royal Rumble match (Nia Jax, Bayley, Charlotte Flair, Naomi, Bianca Belair, Liv Morgan, Raquel Rodriguez, Lyra Valkyria, Ivy Nile, Iyo Sky, 20 TBA): 30 women will compete in this Royal Rumble match. More entrants will be announced in the coming weeks. The WWE women’s and women’s world champions are usually absent, excluding special cases. Flair will be making her first appearance in nearly a year after recovering from injury.

Undisputed WWE Championship — Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Kevin Owens (Ladder match): Rhodes and Owens will fight for the undisputed WWE championship for a third time. Rhodes defeated Owens cleanly at Bash in Berlin. Rhodes also retained the title at Saturday Night’s Main Event, but Owens had Rhodes pinned to the mat while the referee was unconscious. The undisputed WWE championship and the retired Winged Eagle WWE title belts will hang over the ring in this ladder match.

WWE Tag Team Championships — #DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) vs. Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin) (Two Out of Three Falls match): Gargano deceived MCMG to win the tag team titles. The two teams have been at odds ever since. They will compete in a two out of three falls match at the Royal Rumble.

  • UFC Fight Night prediction — Israel Adesanya vs Nassourdine Imavov: Fight card, start time, odds, live stream

Do not let Israel Adesanya and Nassourdine Imavov’s calm demeanors fool you, there is a lot at stake for them at UFC Fight Night on Saturday. Adesanya defends his position among the middleweight elite against a rising contender looking to change his life in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Adesanya (24-4) is in an unusual place. The former UFC middleweight champion competes in his first non-title fight since beating Anderson Silva in February 2019. It’s also his first non-pay-per-view fight since July 2018. Adesanya is on the verge of his first losing streak in 114 combined combat sports fights across mixed martial arts, kickboxing and boxing, dating back to 2010. A win is crucial if Adesanya wants to remain among the middleweight elite. Despite the immense stakes, Adesanya refuses to bear outside pressure or consider options in another weight class.

“Not really. I put the pressure on myself,” Adesanya told CBS Sports ahead of Saturday’s card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. “If that’s how he feels, that’s how he feels. I’ve been here before.

“Middleweight is where I’m at so I’m chilling, doing my own thing.”

Imavov (15-4, 1 NC) has been relentless in his pursuit of glory. Saturday marks his fourth time competing in 363 days. Imavov’s output has rewarded him with the biggest fight of his career. The Frenchman believes a win secures him a middleweight title shot. Khamzat Chimaev might be ahead of Imavov in the pecking order, but Imavov’s reliability makes him a prime candidate if the UFC calls. Saturday’s fight is the biggest of Imavov’s career, but he shrugs off Adesanya’s assertion that the pressure is on him.

“The pressure is on his side,” Imavov told CBS Sports through a French interpreter. “The fact he already lost two fights in a row. Now he’s fighting a lower-ranked guy. He doesn’t want to lose to me or lose three times in a row. I know he hates not being a champion. I consider the pressure to be on his side.

“After the fight, it’s the belt. If I have to wait, I’ll wait. If I have to replace someone to fight for the belt, I’ll do it. I’m always ready to fight.”

Check out the full interview with Israel Adesanya below.

UFC Fight Night presents a much better offering this week than at the UFC Apex in January. Said Nurmagomedov vs. Vinicius Oliveira and Mike Davis vs. Fares Ziam are solid fights between rising contenders. Even more intriguing is the co-main event. Sharabutdin Magomedov — better known as “Shara Bullet” — called out Adesanya after his KO of the Year candidate double spinning back fist at UFC 308. Interestingly, Michael “Venom” Page answered the challenge up a weight class.

“He has an exciting style, very explosive and interesting to watch,” Page told CBS Sports. “I feel it isn’t anything I haven’t seen before. Because I was in the kickboxing world for so long, I’ve seen and sparred with people like him. As much as I think he’s exceptional, I see things I can exploit.”

“I can say with confidence that he’s never seen a striker in front of him like me,” Magomedov told CBS Sports through a Russian interpreter. “What’s going to happen is he’ll see me in front of him and realize I’m going to be quite a puzzle to solve. Once he realizes how to solve him, it will be way too late for him.”

The other notable featured bouts pits heavyweights against each other when Sergei Pavlovich takes on Jairzinho Rozenstruik. Pavlovich was in an interim title fight just two bouts ago when he squared off with Tom Aspinall at UFC 295 in 2023. The Russian was a fast rising contender with brutal power in both hands, but he could not hold up against Aspinall in a 69-second TKO loss. He followed that up with a brutal beating at the hands of veteran Alexander Volkov last June. Now, he gets a tough veteran in Rozenstruik, who is looking for his third straight win and fourth in his last five appearances.

“Of course I felt it. I felt that some people turned away, but I don’t pay them too much attention,” Pavlovich said through an interpreter during Wednesday’s media day. “I want to thank personally the people that have stayed, that supported me through this. For them, I want to do this, and those people who came and went and whatever, I’m not worried about that.”

Below is the rest of the fight card for Saturday, with the latest odds, before we make a prediction and pick the main event.

    Prediction

Israel Adesanya vs. Nassourdine Imavov: Adesanya should be a bigger betting favorite than the odds indicate. He’s coming off consecutive losses to two of the best middleweights on the roster. Sean Strickland makes every fight ugly and Dricus du Plessis is dominant. Adesanya is still championship caliber. Imavov’s best asset is his well-roundedness. His diverse skills allow him to capitalize on his opponent’s mistakes. But Adesanya isn’t error-prone. Adesanya is the superior striker and has spent his MMA career working to keep the fight on his terms. Imavov lacks a clear dominant skill to beat Adesanya. Alex Pereira, Strickland and du Plessis respectively weaponized their striking, pressure and physicality to beat Adesanya. I struggle to find the key asset Imavov can use to overwhelm the former champ. Adesanya via Unanimous Decision

  • UFC Fight Card Schedule For February 2025

With January behind us, it’s time to look at the UFC schedule for February 2025. The premier MMA promotion jumps right into action on Saturday, February 1 and has events scheduled for each weekend of the month.

UFC Schedule February 2025: UFC Vegas Saudi Arabia

The first fight card on the 2025 UFC schedule, UFC Saudi Arabia takes place on Saturday, February 1 from the anb Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The main event of the card is a middleweight matchup between former UFC champion Israel Adesanya and Nassourine Imavov.

Israel Adesanya (24-4) was a perfect 11-0 when he joined the UFC in 2018. The then 28-year-old had held titles with Hex Fight Series and AFC before joining the UFC. He had also fought twice for the Glory Kickboxing Middleweight crown before focusing on MMA.

Adesanya’s first fight was a “Performance of the Night” bonus-winning knockout of Rob Wilkinson in a bloody battle. After the win, Adesanya delivered a memorable post-fight interview with UFC commentator Jon Anik.

Decision wins over Marvin Vettori and Brad Tavares put Adesanya in the top 10 in the division. A first-round TKO over Derek Brunson then launched him to No. 6. A decision over a fading former UFC middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva followed.

That fight against Silva, which took place at UFC 234 in February 2019, was the last time Adesanya would compete in a non-title fight with the UFC.

In his next outing, Adesanya captured the interim UFC middleweight crown with a gut-check decision win over Kelvin Gastelum. Adesanya unified the titles in October 2019 with a knockout win over Robert Whittaker.

Title defense wins over Yoel Romero and Paulo Costa followed. Adesanya, looking to become a double UFC champ, moved to light heavyweight for his next fight against then UFC 205-pound titleholder Jan Blachowicz. Blachowicz handed Adesanya his first defeat, beating him by decision at UFC 259.

The middleweight champ bounced back from that setback with title defenses against Vettori, Whittaker. and Jared Cannonier.

A grudge match was next on Adesanya’s schedule as he faced the man who had defeated him twice under the Glory Banner, Alex Pereira, at UFC 281. Adesanya entered the fifth and final round of that contest ahead on the scorecards, only to get knocked out at 2:01 of that round.

Adesanya got revenge in April 2023 at UFC 287 when he knocked out Pereira in the second round.

In his next outing, at UFC 293, Adesanya dropped the belt to Strickland.

Adesanya is currently riding a two-fight losing skid after a UFC 305 submission loss to Dricus du Plessis in a title fight.

Adesanya seems to be relaxed and lose heading into Saturday’s fight card and with this not being a UFC title fight, the former champ feels less pressure ahead of this contest.

Nassourdine Imavov (15-4-0-1) was 8-2 when he first fought for the UFC. That bout came in October 2020, and he won a decision over Jordan Williams. Imavov went 3-1 in his next four UFC outings. In January 2023, Imavov was booked to face Kelvin Gastelum, but that fight fell apart when Gastelum withdrew. Sean Strickland stepped in on short notice to keep the fight, which was to be the main event, on the card. The only stipulation was that the meeting was to take place at light heavyweight. Strickland picked up a unanimous decision win in that scrap.

Imavov has fought four times since then. In June 2023 he faced Strickland’s teammate Chris Curtis at UFC 289, but that fight ended in a no contest when a clash of heads left Curtis unable to continue. Then, in February of this year, Imavov defeated Roman Dolidze by majority decision in a main event scrap on a UFC Fight Night card.

In June 2024, the 29-year-old scored a TKO win over former UFC middleweight title challenger Jared Cannonier in the main event of a June Fight Night card in Louisville.

Imavov took the best that Jared Cannonier had to offer in the first three rounds of their UFC Louisville main event and was in the process of turning the tables on the former UFC middleweight title challenger when referee Jason Herzog waved off the fight in the fourth stanza and awarded the victory to Imavov.

Cannonier’s game plan was a good one, but his approach of using leg kicks to slow his opponent and pick up control time against the cage didn’t work. Yes, the leg kicks scored for Cannonier, but they didn’t deter Imavov, who was mounting a comeback after falling behind 29-29 on two scorecards heading into the fourth round.

Before the fight was waved off, Imavov had honed in on Cannonier’s range and timing. He landed 60 percent of his significant strikes in the second round, 65 percent in the third, and 73 percent in the fourth before Herzog stopped the fight.

After his win, Imavov called for a matchup against former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland. He did not get his wish. Instead, Imavov faced Brendan Allen in the co-main event of a UFC Fight Night event in Paris. Imavov won that contest via unanimous decision.

UFC Schedule February 2025: UFC 312

The second pay-per-view on the 2025 UFC schedule takes place on Saturday, February 8. That fight card, UFC 312, is headlined by a middleweight title fight rematch between current champ Dricus du Plessis and the man he took the title from in January 2024, Sean Strickland. In the evening’s co-main event, UFC women’s strawweight titleholder Zhang Weili faces Tatiana Suarez

UFC 312 Main Event: Du Plessis Vs. Strickland 2

Du Plessis sports a 22-2 record heading into UFC 312. He is unbeaten in his past 10 fights and has a perfect 8-0 record in the UFC, with six finishes and four fight-night bonus awards. He joined the UFC in October 2020.

Strickland, who has been with the UFC since March 2014 has a career record of 29-6. He is 16-6 in the UFC with four finishes and four fight-night bonus awards.

Du Plessis and Strickland shared “Fight of the Night” honors for their first meeting, which took place at UFC 297 in January 2024.

Since then, Du Plessis is 1-0 with an August 2024 submission win over former UFC middleweight champ Israel Adesanya. Strickland has also fought once since losing his title to Du Plessis, beating Paulo Costa by split decision in June.

UFC 312 Co-Main Event: Zhang Weili vs. Tatiana Suarez

Zhang Weili (25-3) is in her second stint with the UFC’s 115-pound title. The 34-year-old first captured the belt in August 2019 in her fourth fight with the UFC. Zhang defeated Jessica Andrade via TKO at the 0:42 mark of the first round of their UFC Fight Night bout in China to capture the belt. Zhang’s first defense of her crown came in March 2020, when she scored a split decision over former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Zhang’s title reign ended in April 2021 when Rose Namajunas scored a highlight-reel head kick knockout win over the champ 78 seconds into their UFC 261 scrap. Namajunas held onto the belt in the rematch in November 2021, defeating Zhang via split decision.

Zhang bounced back from those back-to-back defeats in June 2022 when she once again beat Jedrzejczyk, this time scoring a knockout victory.

In November 2022, Zhang found herself once again fighting for the belt. She reclaimed UFC gold with a submission win over Carla Esparza.

Zhang has since defended her title twice, beating Amanda Lemos via decision in August 2023, and most recently defeating Yan Xiaonan via decision at UFC 300.

Tatiana Suarez (10-0) is the No. 1 fighter in the official UFC strawweight rankings. The 33-year-old has been with the UFC since July 2016 when she won season 23 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” defeating Amanda Cooper via submission. The win was Suarez’s fourth professional MMA bout.

An accomplished wrestler, Suarez’s UFC career has been plagued by injuries. Those injuries have limited Suarez to seven UFC outings. She went from June 2019 to February 2023 without a fight.

Suarez returned to action at in late February 2023, scoring a submission win over Montana De La Rosa. She followed that with a August 2023 submission win over former champ Jessica Andrade in August 2023.

The injury bug visited Suarez again in December 2023 when she was booked to face Amanda Lemos at UFC 298.

Suarez has been strategic in her plans to return since her first long layoff. Something she discussed with MMA Fighting.

“The good thing is that there’s nothing actually anatomically wrong with my knee,” Suarez said. “So that’s a good thing. But I just didn’t want to go ahead and try to push through something that wasn’t doing what it [was supposed to], because my knee was really inflamed and I didn’t want to try to grapple through something and then actually hurt my knee badly. Because it is the knee that I had surgery on, so I just didn’t want to go ahead and mess with that, especially because my actual injury was so severe. I mean, I tore every ligament in my knee.

“I have cadavers, they’re not my actual ligaments, so I didn’t want to do something kind of similar to the Nina Ansaroff thing where I pushed through the injury, I went and fought, and then it got worse in the fight, and then I had to be out for a couple years. I just didn’t want that to happen to me again. I learned my lesson the first time and I was like, ‘I’m not going to do that.’ But if it was something where I could train and just go hard, I would have just fought with it. But it just wasn’t working out for me. We tried everything.”
