Vanessa Carlton and Julia Stiles Met 30 Years Ago in ‘9th Grade’ (Exclusive)
It was just an ordinary day when Vanessa Carlton met Julia Stiles.
While speaking to PEOPLE at a screening for Stiles’ directorial debut movie, Wish You Were Here, in New York City on Jan. 15, the “Ordinary Day” singer shared that she had actually met Stiles three decades ago.
“I’ve known Julia since like ninth grade biology class, so we’re just living our life, man, just looking for the next exciting thing to do,” Carlton, 44, tells PEOPLE of her longtime friendship with Stiles, 43, that started when they were teens.
The 10 Things I Hate About You actress tapped the “A Thousand Miles” singer to score Wish You Were Here, her 2025 romantic drama based on Renée Carlino’s 2017 best-selling novel of the same name.
Carlton revealed that despite their past connection, which also includes being photographed together at red carpet events over the years, she had to audition for the chance to score the movie, which hit theaters on Jan. 17.

“We auditioned — we read the script last summer,” the three-time Grammy nominee says, referring to herself and husband John McCauley of rock band Deer Tick and Dennis Ryan Engineering. “We got to throw our hat in the ring with our themes and then we got the job.”
“It was so fabulous — our first time scoring a film,” Carlton adds. “Julia is such an amazing director, and she gave us such wonderful clear guidance musically, so it was a real pleasure to set the mood musically for the film.”

Asked how it has been to see where they both have ended up in entertainment since they met in high school, Carlton touted their bond.
“I think it’s a dream,” Carlton says. “I really do think it takes a lot of hard work and navigating a lot of tricky situations, but I think friendships really matter, and I can’t speak for her, but I think she should be really proud of the work that she’s done and where she’s headed.”
Wish You Were Here — which stars Isabelle Fuhrman, Mena Massoud, Jennifer Grey and Kelsey Grammer — is now in theaters.

The Detroit Lions have been ravaged by injuries during the 2024 campaign, but the hope is that they will get some key starters back by the playoffs, a list that includes running back David Montgomery, edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, linebacker Alex Anzalone and cornerback Carlton Davis.
Montgomery suffered an MCL injury in Week 15 that was initially believed to be a season-ending issue. However, after getting more opinions, there is hope he’ll be able to return in the postseason.
Davis is recovering from a fractured jaw that is expected to sideline him six weeks. Hutchinson has a broken tibia and fibula, but there has been optimism he could be back if the Lions make a deep playoff run.
Last but not least, Anzalone is working his way back from a broken forearm suffered in Week 11 that has a timeline of six-to-eight weeks.
On Sunday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided some updates on Hutchinson, Montgomery and Anzalone. The most recent update on Davis comes from head coach Dan Campbell.
David Montgomery injury update
According to Rapoport, the goal is for Montgomery to be back by the second round of the playoffs. If the Lions can secure a first-round bye, it’s possible Montgomery doesn’t miss any playoff games.
“He now is going to rehab with a realistic goal of being back for the divisional round of the playoffs,” Rapoport said of Montgomery. “So about a month from now for Montgomery.
Aidan Hutchinson injury update
As has been widely reported, Hutchinson is on track to make it back by the Super Bowl, Rapoport reported. Hutchinson recently revealed that is indeed his target return date during an appearance on “The Squeeze” podcast.
“I’m on track for my goal of returning for the Super Bowl,” Hutchinson said. “And so, I keep telling all the boys when I see them in the (Lions) facility, ‘you’ve just to get there. And I promise you I’m going to be back.’”
Alex Anzalone injury update
Rapoport added that the expectation is Anzalone will be back by the playoffs, but he didn’t offer a specific round for that return like he did with Montgomery. The first round of the postseason will be eight weeks from his injury, so it’s possible Anzalone is back by then if the Lions don’t win the No. 1 seed.
Carlton Davis injury update
Davis’ timeline to return from his fractured jaw is six weeks, which would mean he’s in play for the NFC Championship Game. But Campbell’s latest update put a damper on that hope.
“I’d say nothing has changed. As of right now, it doesn’t look optimistic to get him back,” Campbell said of Davis. “Doesn’t mean he won’t, but I don’t foresee that right now.”
Ideally, the Lions lock up the No. 1 seed. That would put the Lions in position to not be missing Anzalone or Montgomery for a single playoff game. But when it comes to Davis and Hutchinson, a run deep into the playoffs is the only chance Detroit has to see them on the field again this season.

Here are the latest injury updates on key players for the Detroit Lions:1. David Montgomery: The running back is dealing with a shoulder injury that has sidelined him for several games. He is currently listed as day-to-day and his status for the next game is uncertain. The team is closely monitoring his progress and will provide updates as they become available.
2. Aidan Hutchinson: The defensive end suffered a knee injury in the last game and is undergoing further evaluation to determine the severity of the injury. Hutchinson has been a key player for the Lions defense and his absence would be a significant blow to the team. Fans are hoping for a speedy recovery and a return to the field soon.
3. Carlton Davis: The cornerback is nursing a hamstring injury that has kept him out of practice for the past week. The team is taking a cautious approach with Davis to ensure he fully recovers before returning to action. His availability for the upcoming game is uncertain, but the coaching staff remains hopeful that he will be able to play.
4. Alex Anzalone: The linebacker is dealing with a groin injury that has limited his participation in practice. Anzalone’s status for the next game is up in the air, but the team is hopeful that he will be able to suit up and contribute on the field. The coaching staff is closely monitoring his progress and will make a decision closer to game time.
