  • South Carolina women’s basketball sticks at No. 2 spot in ranking despite country’s best resume

South Carolina women’s basketball added another top 5 victory this weekend (a 66-56 smothering of the LSU Tigers) to move their overall record to 19-1 and their conference mark to a perfect 7-0. Since losing to UCLA back in November, the Gamecocks have been the country’s most impressive team. Because of their 14-game win streak (with each victory coming by double-digit points), Dawn Staley’s squad is closing the gap on the Bruins at the top of the AP top 25.

    [Win tickets: South Carolina-Auburn WBB]

When the Associated Press updated its rankings on Monday, South Carolina remained at No. 2. Once again, the Gamecocks earned one first-place vote despite growing sentiment nationally that they are the most impressive group in the country. Last week, USC picked up just one first-place vote, as well. However, this week, Notre Dame’s two first-place votes disappeared. Both votes moved over to UCLA.

UCLA has held onto the country’s top spot for the last two months, and the Bruins deserve it. Cori Close’s team remains undefeated (the only team in college basketball with that distinction), beat the Gamecocks head-to-head, and dispatched a top-10 Maryland team by double figures on Sunday.

Even so, South Carolina women’s basketball owns the best resume in the country.

The Gamecocks lead the country with both nine Quad 1 victories and 12 combined Quad 1 and Quad 2 wins. If UCLA slips up, even once, Carolina will overtake them in the rankings.

Southern Cal, LSU, and Ohio State all match the Gamecocks with just one loss, but the trio combine for just 11 total Quad 1 wins. With a win on Monday night, South Carolina then would be just one victory off of that number.

You can see the entire AP top 25 below (first-place votes in parentheses):

    1. UCLA Bruins (31)
    2. South Carolina Gamecocks (1)
    3. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
    4. Southern Cal Trojans
    5. Texas Longhorns
    6. UConn Huskies
    7. LSU Tigers
    8. Ohio State Buckeyes
    9. TCU Horned Frogs
    10. Duke Blue Devils
    11. Kansas State Wildcats
    12. Kentucky Wildcats
    13. Oklahoma Sooners
    14. Maryland Terrapins
    15. North Carolina Tar Heels
    16. Michigan State Spartans
    17. NC State Wolfpack
    18. Tennessee Lady Volunteers
    19. California Golden Bears
    20. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
    21. West Virginia Mountaineers
    22. Alabama Crimson Tide

First, on Monday night, the Gamecocks will play a road contest against the Tennessee Lady Volunteers. ESPN2 will broadcast the 7:00 p.m. contest, while the ESPN app will make it available for streaming.

Then, on Sunday, Carolina will return home to play the Auburn Tigers. A Noon tip-off, the Gamecocks and Tigers will play on SEC Network and the ESPN app.

South Carolina women’s basketball continues to dominate the court as they hold onto their No. 2 spot in the rankings, despite boasting the country’s best resume. The Gamecocks have been on fire this season, showcasing their skill, teamwork, and determination in every game they play.

With an impressive record and a lineup of talented players, South Carolina is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in women’s college basketball. Their strong defense, fast-paced offense, and relentless work ethic have earned them wins against some of the top teams in the nation.

Even though they may not hold the top spot in the rankings, South Carolina is still making a statement with their performance on the court. Fans can expect to see more exciting games and impressive victories from this powerhouse team as they continue their journey towards greatness.

So keep an eye on South Carolina women’s basketball as they show the world why they deserve to be recognized as one of the best teams in the country. This is a team that is not to be underestimated, and they are ready to take on any challenge that comes their way.

  • Women’s basketball AP poll, takeaways: Does South Carolina have a case for No. 1?

The conference schedule is entering its midway point as the calendar changes to February. While it’s typically a good indicator of which teams will be regular season champions, it’s tougher to discern in an era of bloated conferences. Plenty of conference leaders haven’t played other teams at the top. Only one program has more than a one-game lead in the five major conferences.

The one exception is typical: Connecticut (19-2, 10-0) holds a 1.5-game edge in the Big East after its 72-61 victory at Creighton (16-4, 8-1).

The biggest game of the week between South Carolina and Tennessee on Monday highlights two programs delivering some of the tougher questions in the AP poll.

It is hard to ignore what South Carolina has done since losing to UCLA in November. It’s near impossible to shut out what the Gamecocks have done this month alone. They absolutely have a case for No. 1, even though their one loss is to the team ranked No. 1 since Week 4.

After a 66-56 win over then-No. 5 LSU on Friday night, South Carolina is 9-1 in Quad 1 games. No other team has more than nine wins. No, they’re not undefeated. But they’re 19-1 playing the toughest schedule in the country with a lone loss to UCLA in November. In eight wins against AP-ranked opponents, their margin of victory is 23 points per game. UCLA’s is 13.6 in five wins.

South Carolina is winning SEC games by an average margin of 26.5 points (Kentucky is second at 14.7). The average margin UCLA wins by in the Big Ten is 19.8, trailing USC (22.4). Deciding between those requires the subjective measurement of which conference is better halfway into the docket.

UCLA is a fair No. 1 selection, too. The Bruins are undefeated in a power conference heading into February and that’s no easy feat. But to say they should be a consensus pick is ignoring the other spectacular performances to this point.

On its face, the Lady Vols resume outlines a four-loss team failing in conference play. They’re ninth in the conference standings and the only ranked team with a losing conference record.

Tennessee’s signature non-conference wins are back-to-back contests against Florida State at home in the SEC/ACC Challenge and on a neutral court over Iowa in the Champions Classic. The former is looking better every week, taking the place of the latter as the Hawkeyes skid.

They have a losing record (2-4) in Quad 1 games and are a shade over .500 vs the NET top 100, as of games through Saturday.

Yet, they’re still one of the best 20 teams in the nation, where they’ve remained in the AP poll since re-entering on Dec. 9 at No. 19. And there’s no reason to move them around much.

Their four losses are by a combined eight points to Oklahoma (one point), Vanderbilt (one), LSU (two) and Texas (four). All are top 20 in NET, led by Texas (3) and LSU (9). Unlike earlier losses to the Sooners and Commodores, Tennessee didn’t have to dig out of a hole against the Longhorns last week. The game never swayed more than six points either way and Texas scored the game’s final four points.

To be fair, the Lady Vols haven’t been able to find winning baskets in the waning minutes and that’s an issue looking toward March. Moral victories don’t mean much and head coach Kim Caldwell called her team out on close calls last week ahead of the Texas game.

Caldwell missed the loss against Texas on Thursday after giving birth to her first child earlier in the week. She said she will return to the sidelines when Tennessee hosts South Carolina on Monday (7 p.m. ET, ESPN2).

TCU is a late-tournament caliber team through three quarters. In the fourth, it’s touch-and-go. The Horned Frogs spit up a large second-half lead for the fourth consecutive game on Sunday, letting a 22-point cushion sink to three in the final 15 seconds.

Late free throws pushed TCU (20-2, 8-1 Big 12) to its first win over Baylor since Feb. 28, 1990. Texas native Sedona Prince said snapping the 37-game losing streak was a highlight of her career having watched the great national championship Bears teams as a kid. It gives them the tiebreaker over Baylor (16-5, 6-2) for the regular season Big 12 title. Neither has played Kansas State (19-2, 7-1).

The Horned Frogs weren’t so fortunate earlier in the week when they were outscored 36-20 by Oklahoma State in the second half of a 60-59 loss to the unranked squad. Big leads disappeared last week against Central Florida (90-81 win) and Utah (81-73).

“I wish it was that easy where you go in at halftime and other teams don’t make adjustments,” TCU head coach Mark Campbell said on Sunday. “But our group is growing through that. The Oklahoma State game, the game before, I will take a lot of blame for not being able to manage the second half wisely. At the same time, we’re a new group that’s going through this journey together. The way that they managed the clock and managed the end of the game today was night and day from the Oklahoma State game.”

TCU is a vastly different team from its days of holding an emergency walk-on session to fill its roster a year ago. Fifth-year guard Hailey Van Lith improved at the point guard position, averaging a career-best 5.8 assists (17th in DI) and near a career-best scoring (18.3 ppg ranks 54th). The two-man game with the 6-foot-7 Prince is netting career efficiency numbers for the center while Madison Conner and Agnes Emma-Nnopu fuel the team’s top-10 3-point percentages.

Of all the teams that tumbled last week, Maryland’s free fall is the most crushing. The Terps began the week on the wrong side of a blowout to then-No. 7 Texas on national television, fell to then-No. 12 Ohio State days later and appeared back in a prime-time spot unable to keep pace with No. 1 UCLA.

The first-half performance against the nation’s best team on Sunday was valiant given their situation. Maryland (16-4, 6-3 Big Ten) is without two of its three leading scorers in Bri McDaniel and Shyanne Sellers. They are the only ones averaging double digits and they are first and second in team assists.

“We’re just trying to adapt as quickly as we can,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “You look at when you’re in this grind, and you’re literally doing one-day preps of practices, and … it’s hard. You’re doing it with limited practice time and a lot of film. So we’re trying to play to our strengths.”

McDaniel is out for the season and Sellers, named Big Ten player of the week seven days ago, is considered day-to-day. The loss shifts the Big Ten regular season odds further in the favor of UCLA (20-0, 8-0) and USC (18-1, 8-0) favor. The Los Angeles programs will host Ohio State (19-1, 8-1) next week.

South Carolina (19-1, 7-0 SEC) at Tennessee (15-4, 3-4 SEC), Monday at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2) — The Gamecocks are taking aim at the final gem in their midseason gauntlet.

North Carolina (18-4, 6-3 ACC) at California (18-3, 6-2), Thursday at 10 p.m. ET (ACCN) — The Bears are one of the season’s surprises shaking up the ACC after realignment, but they’ve yet to see most of the conference’s best.

The latest AP poll for women’s college basketball has once again sparked debate among fans and analysts. With South Carolina sitting at No. 2 behind Stanford, the question on everyone’s mind is: does the Gamecocks have a case for the top spot?

While Stanford has been dominant this season with an undefeated record, South Carolina has also been impressive with only one loss on their record. The Gamecocks have a strong resume with wins over top-ranked teams like UConn and Georgia, showcasing their ability to compete at the highest level.

One argument in favor of South Carolina being No. 1 is their depth and talent across the roster. Led by star player Aliyah Boston, the Gamecocks have multiple players who can step up and make big plays when needed. Their defense has also been a key factor in their success, consistently shutting down opponents and forcing turnovers.

On the other hand, some may argue that Stanford’s undefeated record and consistent performance throughout the season make them the rightful No. 1 team. The Cardinal have a balanced offense and strong defense, making them a tough team to beat.

Ultimately, the decision of who should be ranked No. 1 comes down to personal preference and interpretation of the teams’ performances. Both South Carolina and Stanford have made strong cases for the top spot, and it will be interesting to see how the rest of the season unfolds.

What do you think? Does South Carolina have a case for No. 1 in the women’s basketball AP poll? Let us know in the comments!

  • Overnight fire hits major chicken farm facility in South Carolina, officials say

There was an overnight fire at major chicken farm in South Carolina.

Multiple fire departments responded to the blaze at the Amick Farms plant on U.S. 178/Batesburg Highway. That’s near the intersection with Spann Road in the Batesburg-Leesville area of Saluda County.

No injuries were reported in the fire at “one of the most important businesses in Saluda County,” Saluda County EMS said on it’s Facebook page.

Information about the cause of the fire, and where it started at the chicken farm in the Midlands, was not available. Messages left with the Batesburg-Leesville Fire Department, Saluda County Fire Service and Lexington County Fire Service weren’t immediately returned.

Firefighters responded to the burning facility at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a post from Lexington County, SC Firewire.

There was no word about how long it took to get the fire under control and extinguished, or the extent of the damage caused to the chicken plant.

Amick Farms officials said work would be disrupted for at least two days. Both Sunday’s sanitation and night shift as well as Monday’s day shift employees were told not to report for their normally scheduled shifts.

“Appropriate measures are being taken to best serve our team members, growers and customers,” Amick Farms officials said. “We appreciate your commitment to your job and being a part of the Amick Team!”

In November 2024, there was a fire at a Maryland farm that had a contract with Amick Farms where about 20,000 chickens died, WBOC reported.

More NHL: Avalanche Trade Superstar Forward to Hurricanes in Three-Way Blockbuster Deal

    Hurricanes vs Islanders Best Bets:

We get our first look at the new Finnish connection on Carolina with Mikko Rantanen lined up to play his first game with the Hurricanes and superstar forward Sebastian Aho. The two Finland products may develop a chemistry unlike we’ve seen before and could create problems for an Islanders team that is red hot with three straight wins.

The confidence built from their recent run of success should help New York keep this game close but they will need to score as Rantanen has a pair of goals and six assists for eight points in his last five games against the Islanders.

He should get on the board with an assist as he ranks top 12 in the NHL over the last three seasons with 151 in 211 games played. The best chance for New York to win this game is to play a solid defensive game as they have the 14th-best goals against average at 2.94 which should clash against Carolina and their seventh-best defence with a 2.76 average.

More NHL: Bank On Shane Pinto Staying Hot, Senators Topping Leafs in High-Scoring Battle of Ontario

The Islanders have also gone under six goals in five of their last six home games and will need to play their best on defence to help backup netminder Marcus Hogberg maintain his 1.32 goals against average this season. The 30-year-old Swedish product is known predominantly for his time with the Ottawa Senators where he produced some stellar performances. He should help the Islanders shock the public as 88 per cent of betters are taking the Hurricanes on the moneyline.

The New York Islanders pulled off a surprising win against the Carolina Hurricanes in the highly anticipated debut of Mikko Rantanen. The Finnish forward, who was acquired by the Islanders in a blockbuster trade just days before the game, made an immediate impact on the ice.

Rantanen wasted no time showing off his scoring prowess, netting a goal early in the first period to give the Islanders an early lead. His speed, skill, and hockey IQ were on full display throughout the game, leaving fans and analysts alike in awe of his talent.

Despite a strong push from the Hurricanes in the second and third periods, the Islanders held on for a 3-2 victory, with Rantanen’s goal proving to be the game-winner. The team’s chemistry seemed to click instantly with Rantanen in the lineup, and the win served as a statement to the rest of the league that the Islanders are a force to be reckoned with.

As Rantanen continues to acclimate to his new team and surroundings, the future looks bright for the Islanders. With his addition to an already talented roster, the team is poised to make a deep playoff run and potentially contend for a Stanley Cup.

Fans can count on the Islanders to continue surprising opponents and making waves in the NHL, with Mikko Rantanen leading the charge.

  • Preview: Boston College Men’s Basketball vs North Carolina

Boston College will take on a struggling UNC squad tomorrow afternoon. The Eagles travel to Chapel Hill having lost their last 5 games. The Tar Heels are looking to end a losing streak of their own having lost their last two against Wake Forest and Stanford.

Who: Boston College Eagles (9-10) vs. North Carolina (12-8)

Where: Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC

    When: Saturday, January 25th, 2025

    Tip-off Time: 2:15 PM EST

How to Watch: This game will be available to watch on The CW.

North Carolina was the 9th ranked team in the country according to the preseason AP Poll and have underperformed so far. They currently sit at 12-8 on the year and 5-3 in ACC play. The Tar Heels had a tough Maui Invitational losing all 3 games to Dayton, Auburn, and Michigan State. They have been less than stellar the remainder of the year losing to Alabama, Kansas, Florida, and Louisville to name a few. The Tar Heels have yet to beat a ranked team this season, which is not something anyone expected 20 games into the year.

RJ Davis is the engine that makes the Hells go. Davis was the Jerry West Player of the year, given to the nation’s best shooting guard, the ACC Player of the Year, and a consensus First Team All-American last season. This year Davis is averaging 17.5 points per game which leads the Tar Heels and ranks 7th in the conference. Davis’ supporting cast consists of Sophomore Elliot Cadeau, Junior Seth Trimble, and Freshman Ian Jackson. Cadeau has had a rough start to his career. He was a highly touted recruit who struggled shooting all of last season. His shot has improved this year as he is averaging just over 10 points per game and is shooting about 30% from the 3 points range compared to 18% last season. Trimble has averaged 12 points this season and missed 3 games with an upper-body injury sustained around New Years. Trimble has made a big step forward from last year when he only average 5 points per game. Jackson has been the second leading scorer for the Tar Heels, but he also missed a few games earlier in the season. Jackson is averaging just shy of 15 points per game.

North Carolina has definitely underperformed so far this season, but they still have RJ Davis, who will be a tough match up for the Eagles. Boston College is currently second to last in the ACC standings and will need to play one of their best games of the year to compete with the Tar Heels in the Dean Dome. Coach Grant will need to find a way to slow down Davis and company and play better team defense. North Carolina is known for getting up and down the floor, so hopefully the Eagles can keep pace come tomorrow afternoon.

The Boston College Men’s Basketball team is gearing up for an exciting matchup against North Carolina this weekend. Both teams are coming off strong performances and are looking to secure a key victory in conference play.

Boston College has shown resilience and determination throughout the season, with standout performances from players like Jay Heath and Steffon Mitchell. With a strong defense and potent offense, the Eagles are ready to take on the Tar Heels and showcase their skills on the court.

On the other hand, North Carolina is a formidable opponent with a talented roster led by players like Armando Bacot and Caleb Love. The Tar Heels are known for their fast-paced style of play and aggressive defense, posing a tough challenge for Boston College.

This matchup promises to be a thrilling showdown between two competitive teams vying for a crucial win. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as Boston College faces off against North Carolina in what is sure to be an intense and exciting game. The Eagles are no doubt hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.

Last Tuesday, things could have been worse for Boston College, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 74-56 loss to Virginia.

Fred Payne put forth a good effort for the losing side as he went 7 for 10 en route to 17 points plus three steals. His performance made up for a slower match against Duke on Saturday.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Boston College struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. Sadly, that’s becoming something of a trend for them; they were averaging 12.5 offensive rebounds per game earlier this season, but in their last five games they’ve fallen to only 6.6 per game.

Meanwhile, the point spread may have favored N. Carolina last Tuesday, but the final result did not. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 67-66 to Wake Forest. That’s two games in a row now that the Tar Heels have lost by just one point.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Elliot Cadeau, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 13 assists. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in assists. The team also got some help courtesy of RJ Davis, who scored 21 points in addition to two steals.

Boston College now has a losing record at 9-10. As for N. Carolina, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-8.

Boston College came up short against N. Carolina in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, falling 76-66. Can Boston College avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.

    Odds

    N. Carolina is a big 19-point favorite against Boston College, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Tar Heels as a 18.5-point favorite.

  • University of North Carolina Athletics

    • Carolina looks to end a two-game losing streak on Saturday when the Tar Heels host Boston College in the Smith Center at 2:15 p.m. on The CW.
    • The Tar Heels lost, 72-71, to Stanford at home last Saturday and 67-66 at Wake Forest on Tuesday, the first time UNC has dropped consecutive games by a point since 1968.
    • Carolina is 12-8 overall, 5-3 in the ACC.
    • Boston College has lost five in a row and comes to Chapel Hill 9-10, including 1-7 in conference play. The Eagles lost, 74-56, at Virginia on Tuesday.
    • UNC is 7-2 at home this season, while the Eagles are winless in four road starts.
    • Carolina is second in the ACC in scoring through 20 games at 81.5 points per game, but has scored more than 75 points in only two of the first eight ACC games (82 vs. SMU and 79 vs. Cal, both home wins). The Tar Heels are averaging 69.8 points over the last four games, which included wins over NC State and Cal and the one-possession losses to Stanford and Wake  Forest.
    • The Wake Forest game was Carolina’s ninth one-possession game (decided by one, two or three points) this season. That equals the most played by the Tar Heels in a season in the three-point era, which began in 1986-87. The 2010-11 team played nine one-possession games and won eight.
    • The five one-possession wins this season already equal the second most. UNC also won five in 1998-99 (5-3), 2002-03 (5-2) and 2016-17 (5-1).
    • The losses to Stanford and Wake Forest were just the fourth time ever Carolina lost by a point in back-to-back games. The other instances include the 1929-30 season (Loyola Chicago and Duke), 1940-41 (Fordham and St. Joseph’s) and 1967-68 (South Carolina and Duke).
RJ Davis led all scorers with 21 points and Elliot Cadeau recorded his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 assists, but Wake Forest went 21 for 27 from the free throw line and converted its only two three-point field goals as part of a 12-2 second-half run to overtake the Tar Heels, 67-66, in Winston-Salem.
    • It was the fourth straight time dating back to 2020 the Demon Deacons prevailed on their home court, the first time Wake Forest has done that since 1962-65.
    • Cadeau made (5) or assisted (13) on 18 of UNC’s 26 field goals, the second-highest percentage ever in a game by a Tar Heel. Cadeau factored on 69.2% of Carolina’s field goals. Phil Ford  (11 FGs, 10 assists) accounted for 72.4% against Seton Hall on 12/4/1975.
    • Following the Boston College game the Tar Heels’ next four games are against teams whose records are a combined 44-12 overall, 19-5 in the ACC.
    • KenPom ranks Carolina No. 4 in the country in strength of schedule behind Alabama, Auburn and Purdue.
    • The Tar Heels have played three of the top five, four of the top 10 and five of the top 12 teams in this week’s Associated Press poll.
    • Based on the January 20 poll, Carolina has already played No. 1 Auburn, No. 4 Alabama, No. 5 Florida, No. 8 Michigan State, No. 12 Kansas and No. 25 Louisville and will play home-and-home games against No. 2 Duke.
    • Carolina is No. 33 overall in KenPom and 39th in the NET.
    • Seven of UNC’s losses are Quad 1 games and five are against teams in the top 16 in the NET (four in the top nine).

    • In the only meeting last season, the Tar Heels won, 76-66, at Conte Forum. RJ Davis led UNC with 16 points and Harrison Ingram had 11 points and 13 rebounds.

    • Carolina scored nine second-chance points in the second half and held the Eagles to 34.5% from the floor and zero fastbreak points.

    • BC went 25 for 29 from the free throw line, the most makes by an opponent in a Carolina victory since Oregon made 25 in the 2017 national semifinals.

    • Carolina is 8-3 vs. the Eagles in Chapel Hill (all in the Smith Center), including a 72-64 win on 1/17/2023.

RJ Davis has scored in double figures in all five of his career games against BC and has averaged 16.4 vs. the Eagles (highs of 18 twice).

    HALF AND HALF

    • Carolina has established double-digit first-half leads eight times and won all eight games (Elon, American, at Hawai’i, La Salle, Campbell, at Notre Dame, SMU and Cal). Twice (Elon and Notre Dame), the Tar Heels lost the lead but went on to win the game.

That includes three second-half performances when UNC shot better than 62% from the floor (vs. American, Florida and Campbell).

    • UNC is 4-1 when it shoots 50% in the first half.

    • The Tar Heels have shot 50% or better in the second half in the second half in seven of the last 11 games but less than 50% in each of the last four games.

    SCORING EFFICIENCY

    • The Tar Heels are 38th in the country in scoring at 81.5 points per game and have improved to 282nd in scoring defense (75.4).

    • The Tar Heels have allowed 65.5 points over the last six games with a high of 73 points by Notre Dame in UNC’s win on January 4.

    • Factoring in pace of play and the number of possessions, Carolina is 49th in the country in offensive efficiency and 31st in defensive efficiency.

    • The Tar Heels are 9-1 this season when holding opponents below 105 points per 100 possessions. Wake Forest (92.0 ppp) is the only team to win despite scoring fewer than 105 points per 100 possessions.

    • Carolina is shooting 55.1% from two-point range, its highest two-point percentage since the 1997-98 ACC champion and NCAA East Regional champion Tar Heels shot 56.5% from two-point range.

    • Carolina is 10-3 this season when it makes 30% or better from three-point range and 2-5 (wins over Georgia Tech and Notre Dame) when it makes less than 30% of its three-point attempts.

    • The Tar Heels went 13 for 50 (26%) on three-pointers in the back-to-back one-point losses to Stanford (5 of 18) and Wake Forest (8 of 32).

    WINS AND LOSSES

    • In Carolina’s 12 wins the Tar Heels are shooting 10.5% higher from the floor than their opponents (49.0 to 38.5%). In the losses, the opponents are out-shooting the Tar Heels 46.4 to 43.2%.

    • The opponents average 84.6 points in UNC’s eight losses and just 69.3 in the Tar Heels’ wins.

    • Carolina is plus 5.4 rebounds per game in its 12 wins and minus 4.5 per game on the boards in the eight losses. The opponents have out-rebounded the Tar Heels in six of the eight losses (UNC was plus-one at Kansas and plus-two vs. Alabama).

    • Carolina is shooting 35% from three in its wins and 27.7% in the losses.

RJ Davis averages 17.2 points in Carolina’s victories and 17.9 in the losses.

Ian Jackson averages 16.1 points in the wins and 12.9 in the losses.

    • Carolina is 7-3 when it makes the same or more three-pointers and is 5-5 when the opponents make more 3FGs.

    JACKSON’S 20-POINT RUN

Ian Jackson scored a game-high 20 points on January 15 vs. Cal, the sixth time in seven games he scored 20 or more and led UNC in scoring. Jackson joined Phil Ford (in 1975) as the only Tar Heel freshmen to score 20 or more points six times in a seven-game stretch.

    • Jackson had previously become the first Tar Heel freshman ever to score 23 or more points in four straight games (24 vs. UCLA, 26 vs. Campbell, 23 at Louisville and 27 at Notre Dame).

    • He was the first UNC freshman to score 20 or more in four games in a row since Tyler Hansbrough (2005-06) and the first to lead UNC in scoring in four straight since Cole Anthony (2019-20).

    • Jackson has scored in double figures 13 times, including 11 of the last 14 games (including six vs. Stanford and seven at Wake Forest)

    • Jackson leads the team with seven 20-point games. RJ Davis has six, including 21 at Wake Forest.

    • Jackson has made 13 3FGs on the road, five more than Davis, who is second.

    • Jackson was named ACC Rookie of the Week for his 26-point performance on December 29 against Campbell.

    • Jackson’s 24 points against UCLA were the second most ever by a Tar Heel freshman in Madison Square Garden (25 by Rashad McCants vs. Kansas in 2002).

    TAR HEELS AND THE ACC

    • Carolina is a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

    • This is the 72nd season of ACC men’s basketball.

    • UNC has won the regular-season championship 33 times, including the 2023-24 season, when the Tar Heels went 17-3 to win the title outright for the 22nd time. Duke is second with 20 regular-season titles.

    • The Tar Heels are 763-316 all-time in ACC regular-season play. The 763 wins are the most by any team.

RJ Davis was the 2024 ACC Player of the Year and Hubert Davis was the Coach of the Year.

    • Davis is the first Player of the Year to return the following season since UNC’s Tyler Hansbrough won the award in 2008 and came back for his senior season in 2009, when he led the Tar Heels to an NCAA title.

    MORE MILESTONES FOR RJ

RJ Davis is one of three players in the top 10 in the ACC in both scoring and assists (with Duke’s Cooper Flagg and Pitt’s Jaland Lowe).

    • Davis has played in 158 games over five seasons. He passed Leaky Black (155) for second in games by a Tar Heel behind Armando Bacot’s ACC-record 169. Davis, Black and Bacot all played a fifth year as a result of Covid-19.

    • Davis leads Carolina and is ninth in the ACC in scoring at 17.5 points per game and is ninth in the league in assists at 3.9 per game.

    • The White Plains, N.Y., native is averaging a career-high 3.9 assists this season. His previous season bests were 3.6 per game in 2021-22 and 3.5 last season.

    • Davis scored 21 points at Wake Forest. It was his 41st career game scoring 20 or more. The Tar Heels are 31-10 when he scores at least 20 and 13-5 when he drops 25 or more.

    • Davis is Carolina’s all-time leader and is 11th in ACC history with 315 three-pointers. Former Wake Forest guard Justin Gray is 10th with 319.

    • Davis is averaging 14.7 field goal attempts per game this season. Last year, he averaged 16.4. He is attempting 7.1 threes per game (7.7 per game last season).

RJ Davis is the second-leading scorer in Carolina history with 2,437 points. He passed Armando Bacot, who also played in five seasons, for second place in the win at Notre Dame on January 4.

    • Davis is eighth in ACC scoring. Duke’s Christian Laettner is seventh (2,460).

    • He broke the UNC career record for three-pointers on December 29 (now has 315) and has the highest free throw percentage ever by a Tar Heel (86%).

    • Davis’ 29-point outing vs. Florida on December 17 made him the highest scoring guard in Carolina history, eclipsing the mark held by Phil Ford.

    • Davis’ career scoring average is 15.4, the eighth-highest by a Tar Heel guard.

    • Last year, Davis became the 19th Tar Heel to earn consensus first-team All-America honors. Those 19 players have won consensus first-team All-America honors a total of 28 times.

    • Davis joined Lennie Rosenbluth in 1957, Phil Ford in 1978, Michael Jordan in 1983 and 1984, Kenny Smith in 1987, Jerry Stackhouse in 1995, Antawn Jamison in 1998, Joseph Forte in 2001 and Tyler Hansbrough in 2008 and 2009 as the only Tar Heels to make first-team All-America on each of the teams the NCAA recognizes to determine consensus first-team All-America.

    SMITH CENTER

    • This is the 40th season the Tar Heels are playing in the Dean E. Smith Center.

    • Carolina is 7-2 in the Smith Center this season and 484-89 (.845) all-time.

    • The Tar Heels are 252-70 against ACC opponents in the Smith Center.

    NOVEMBER SIGNEES

    • Carolina signed Isaiah Denis of Concord, N.C., and Derek Dixon of Vienna, Va.

    • Denis is a 6-5 guard at Davidson Day High School in Davidson, N.C. His parents are Nancy Denis and Frantz Denis, and he plays AAU for CP3.

    • Dixon, the son of John and Kari Dixon, is a 6-3 guard at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. He also plays AAU for Team Takeover.

SHOES FOR HOPE & COACHES VS. CANCER

    • Carolina’s coaches and staff are wearing sneakers custom painted by nine pediatric cancer patients who are being treated at UNC Hospitals.

    • Created in 2021, Shoes4Hope exists to inspire hope, encourage creativity and amplify the voices of children with cancer.

    • As Carolina does not play a home game next week, Shoes4Hope is partnering today with Coaches vs. Cancer, the nationwide initiative through the NABC that empowers basketball coaches to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

    • Shoes4Hope also partnered with Carolina Basketball and the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology department at UNC Children’s Hospital with a shoe painting session and Smith Center tour.

  • Bulldogs should have full SEC season roster ready for tipoff at South Carolina

Mississippi State seems to be in good health for Saturday’s tip time in Columbia. The home team, not so much.

The SEC’s initial availability report for this weekend’s round of conference games shows a short and easy list of Bulldogs who won’t be playing at South Carolina tomorrow. Only guard Kanye Clary is on the list, and for another week is graded Out per what Mississippi State turned in to the SEC Office.

Clary has not played since November, having participated in seven games with four starts before being sidelined by what at the time was called only an injury. There has been no update to Clary’s situation or potential return, or clarification either. However the transfer point guard does have his place on the Bulldog sideline during games.

Other than this one by-now standard exception, Coach Chris Jans looks to have his regular roster available for starting, mixing, and matching. Both guard Riley Kugel and guard Claudell Harris were listed as Probable going into games this past week.

Both probably had a huge hand in the Bulldogs’ 84-81 overtime victory over Ole Miss with Kugel scoring a team-best 21 points. Kugel had missed the entire Auburn game and much of the second half against Kentucky with an ankle injury.

Harris’ issue was never stated between Auburn and Ole Miss and did not matter anyway as he had a hand in the win.

So, as the Bulldogs fly to Columbia tonight it is with the full SEC season squad. Waiting for them is a South Carolina club which may be diminished and greatly if this initial report holds up.

Forward Collin Murray-Boyles as of tonight is listed as Questionable, and that is a huge question for the Gamecocks. Murray-Boyles is far and away the team headliner, averaging 15.3 points on 60% shooting and hauling down 8.6 rebounds with 24 blocked shots.

Two other Gamecocks are on the initial report, most notably Jamarii Thomas listed as Probable. The senior guard is second in squad scoring behind Murray-Boyles at 12.3 points, has 22 three-point goals on 37% shooting, with 50 assists and 21 steals. He has missed four games this season.

And big guard Myles Shute, a 14-game starter, is listed Out. Shute was providing 5.4 points per game but is tied for third on the team in three point goals.

All three played a total 87 minutes in South Carolina’s 85-50 loss at Mississippi State to tip off SEC season. They combined for just a dozen points as Murray-Boyles was shut down on offense, though he had ten rebounds. Thomas was 1-of-8 shooting and Shute missed all his shot in 24 minutes.

That game saw Harris score 17 as a starter and Kugel 12 off the bench.

Tip time is noon central for the SEC Network. The #14-ranked Bulldogs are looking to top .500 in SEC season while South Carolina is chasing it’s first league win.

The Georgia Bulldogs are gearing up for their first SEC game of the season against South Carolina, and they should have their full roster ready to go for tipoff.

After dealing with injuries and other setbacks in the non-conference portion of their schedule, the Bulldogs are finally at full strength and ready to compete against their SEC rivals.

With key players like Sahvir Wheeler, Toumani Camara, and K.D. Johnson all healthy and ready to go, the Bulldogs should be a force to be reckoned with in the conference this season.

Fans can expect an intense and competitive matchup as the Bulldogs look to make a statement in their first SEC game of the season. Tipoff is set for [date and time] at South Carolina, so be sure to tune in and support the Bulldogs as they aim for a strong start to conference play. #GoDawgs #SECbasketball
