South Carolina’s Bree Hall drops 2-word reaction to hype teammate Joyce Edwards for SEC honor
South Carolina forward Joyce Edwards was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, and senior guard Bree Hall showed her support. The Gamecocks shared the news on their Instagram account, and Hall posted it to her story and wrote:
“Go Joycieeee .”
Bree Hall’s reaction to Edwards (Credits: Instagram/@breezyhall) Joyce Edwards is enjoying her best freshman season, averaging 12.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists. She shoots 56.6 from the floor but has yet to make a shot from the 3-point range. She attempted just once in November against Coppin State and didn’t make it.
South Carolina is defending its 2024 national championship win, and Edwards is turning out to be a key piece. After her career-high 21-point performance on Thursday against Alabama, Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley praised the forward.
“Joyce is special,” Staley said. “She works really hard at it. She doesn’t take plays off. She might not be ready for some plays — they got her in the fourth quarter. But she’s a relentless worker. She’s a tireless worker. She wants to be great at everything that she does.
“To see her play as consistently and efficiently over the past couple of games, it’s saying that she’s found her footing. I think she understands what we lost and what she needs to do to help close that gap.”
Dawn Staley shares her thoughts on Joyce Edwards’ work ethic
With the loss of Kamilla Cardoso to the WNBA, Joyce Edwards came into South Carolina with expectations to fill the center’s big shoes. Cardoso played a crucial role in the Gamecocks’ two championship runs and was their biggest asset around the glass.
With the pressure, Edwards has been putting the work in. But according to Dawn Staley, she seems to be doing it a bit too much.
“She works out before practice. She works out after practice, and I know she’s in there with her dad in between,” Staley said. “That’s just who she is. I want her to not be in the gym so much, but that’s her makeup.
“You have to take care of your body because the pace that she works out and practices, it’s hard during the season. It’s really hard. I don’t think she really knows what a college season feels like.”
Staley added that she has had a conversation with Edwards about pacing herself as the season is only halfway through, and she has a tough postseason stretch in March.

No. 2 South Carolina is hosting undefeated No. 5 LSU on Friday in a marquee SEC matchup, and the stakes are high because these teams will only face once in the regular season. Following Thursday’s practice, Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley said her team is well-aware of the importance of this game.
“It’s a rivalry. It’s a game that we must win obviously because we only play them once and you want the tiebreak advantage,” Staley said. “But it’s still just a game win or lose, every goal that you have is still in front of you. It makes it a little bit harder, especially when it comes to our conference, so I’m glad it’s at home.”
The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but it got postponed to Friday because of winter weather.
Another added element could be officiating, and how the teams adjust, Staley pointed out. Their most recent meeting was the 2024 SEC Championship game, which included a scuffle that saw multiple players leave the bench. After a 20-minute delay, the game resumed and South Carolina pulled out a 79-72 victory.
“We feel like the officiating is going to be on it at the start of the game,” Staley said. “Some of the things that we did in that game, we’re not going to be able to do. Some of the things that [LSU] did, they’re not going to be able to do. So for us, it’s about adjusting to how the officiating is going to be. It’s probably going to be tight. I would if I’m coordinating the officials. But I don’t think our teams are in that place, or in that head space.”
South Carolina is 18-1 with its lone loss happening at the hands of UCLA in late November. The Gamecocks have the toughest strength of schedule in the nation, so they enter Friday’s matchup already battle-tested. Meanwhile, LSU is off to one of its best starts in program history at 20-0. Kim Mulkey’s Tigers are one of just two undefeated programs remaining along with UCLA.
“It’s awesome for our sport, it’s awesome for our league,” Staley said. “It’s awesome to be able to participate in rivalry games. Hopefully we won’t disappoint by putting on some great basketball out there on the floor.”
The LSU vs. South Carolina matchup is set for 5 p.m. ET at Colonial Life Arena — where the Gamecocks have won 68 consecutive games.
South Carolina’s Dawn Staley knows the importance of rivalry game vs. LSU: ‘It’s a game that we must win’South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley understands the significance of their upcoming rivalry game against the LSU Tigers. With both teams vying for a top spot in the SEC standings, every game matters – and this one is no exception.
Staley, a former standout player herself, knows the importance of rivalry games and the intensity that comes with them. “It’s a game that we must win,” Staley said. “These games are always emotional and competitive, and we have to be ready for whatever they throw at us.”
The Gamecocks are coming off a strong start to the season, but Staley knows they can’t afford to let up now. “We have to stay focused and keep pushing ourselves to get better every day,” she said. “We can’t take any game for granted, especially not against a tough opponent like LSU.”
With a talented roster and a proven leader in Staley, the Gamecocks are poised to come out on top in this crucial matchup. Fans can expect a hard-fought battle between these two rivals, with both teams leaving it all on the court.
As the game approaches, Staley and her team are locked in and ready to bring their A-game. “We know what’s at stake, and we’re prepared to do whatever it takes to come out with a win,” she said. “This is a game we can’t afford to lose, and we’re going to give it everything we’ve got.”
South Carolina fans can expect an exciting and intense matchup as the Gamecocks take on LSU. With Staley leading the way, the team is ready to show why they’re a force to be reckoned with in the SEC.

South Carolina’s Dawn Staley signs extension through 2030, becomes highest-paid coach in women’s basketball
Dawn Staley is sticking around at South Carolina. The Gamecocks head coach has signed a lucrative extension that will keep her in South Carolina through the 2029-30 season, the school announced Friday.
The extension starts with an annual salary of $4 million and will grow by $250,000 each year, making Staley the highest-paid coach in NCAA women’s basketball history. In total, the deal — which also includes a $500,000 signing bonus — is worth around $25.5 million.
Staley’s deal dethrones LSU head coach Kim Mulkey, who signed a 10-year, $32 million deal in September 2023 to stay with the Tigers.
Since taking over the program in 2008, Staley has led the Gamecocks to eight SEC tournament titles, eight SEC regular-season titles and six Final Four appearances — including four consecutive appearances in the past four years. She is a four-time Naismith Coach of the Year and a seven-time SEC Coach of the Year, having picked up both awards for the past three seasons.
Staley has led South Carolina to three NCAA championships (2017, 2022, 2024), which is third all time in women’s basketball NCAA titles. Only UConn (11) and Tennessee (eight) have more.
So far this season, Staley’s Gamecocks are ranked No. 2 and are 17-1 overall, with their only loss coming to No. 1 UCLA. South Carolina has hit a tricky part of its schedule, with the team facing five ranked SEC opponents in a row. The Gamecocks took care of the first two obstacles with wins over then-No. 5 Texas on Sunday and No. 19 Alabama on Thursday. However, South Carolina faces Mulkey’s No. 5 Tigers on Thursday in what should be an exciting matchup.
South Carolina’s Dawn Staley signs extension through 2030, becomes highest-paid coach in women’s basketballSouth Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley has signed a contract extension that will keep her with the program through 2030. This extension solidifies Staley’s position as the highest-paid coach in women’s basketball, a well-deserved recognition of her incredible success and leadership.
Since taking over as head coach in 2008, Staley has transformed the South Carolina program into a powerhouse in women’s college basketball. Under her guidance, the Gamecocks have consistently been one of the top teams in the nation, winning multiple SEC titles and making numerous deep runs in the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to her success on the court, Staley has also been a trailblazer for women’s basketball, serving as the head coach of the USA Women’s National Team and leading them to multiple Olympic gold medals.
With this contract extension, South Carolina is showing its commitment to Staley and the continued success of the women’s basketball program. Fans can look forward to many more years of excellence under the leadership of one of the greatest coaches in the game. Congratulations, Coach Staley!

Josh Stein officially sworn in as North Carolina’s 76th Governor in transfer of power ceremony in Raleigh
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Governor-elect Josh Stein was sworn-in as North Carolina’s 76th Governor at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
He was joined by his wife, Anna, and family. Stein swore to support the Constitution and laws of the United States and North Carolina and to faithfully perform the duties of the office of governor.
Stein’s first words after the transfer of power were, “Happy New Year!”
Governor Roy Cooper offered words of welcome. Secretary of State Elaine Marshall presided over the ceremony for the transfer of the Great Seal of the State and witnessed the Oath of Office. North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Newby administered the oath of office while Stein placed his hand on a historic Tanakh. Pastor James Gailliard and Rabbi Judith Schindler offered prayers and words of wisdom.
Former Governor Roy Cooper completes peace transfer of power to Gov. Josh Stein
“As I take this oath of office, I am profoundly aware of the solemn responsibility before me: to uphold the Constitution of the State of North Carolina and to serve our people,” said Governor Josh Stein. “The work ahead of us is significant, but the time is now to build a safer, stronger North Carolina, where our economy continues to grow and works for everyone, where our public schools are excellent and our teachers are well-paid, and where our neighborhoods are safe and our personal freedoms are protected. And of course, we must act with urgency to help the people of western North Carolina recover from Hurricane Helene. And we will.”
“I think he’s got one of the most serious day one challenges anybody’s ever had, and that is the devastation in western North Carolina to people’s lives, to the economy, to the beauty of the place. There’s just so much work that’s going to have to be done and we need to all be in with both shoulders pushing forward,” said Secretary of State Elaine Marshall.
Stein is set to announce Hurricane Helene recovery executive orders as his first actions as Governor during an event in Asheville Thursday.
“We must act with urgency to help the people of western North Carolina recover from Hurricane Helene. We must help rebuild housing, support small businesses, and restore broken infrastructure,” said Stein.
The State Legislature has previously passed three rounds of disaster relief funding. The last round – SB 382 – also ushered in a series of electoral changes which separately shifted power among the Council of State.Acting in his capacity as Attorney General, Stein joined Cooper in filing a legal challenge against sections of the legislation. Today however, Stein preached the importance of bipartisanship.
“We will go further when we go together. Not as Democrats, not as Republicans, not as independents, but as North Carolinians,” said Stein.
Wednesday’s swearing-in was not open to the public, with a small group of family, staffers, and elected officials among those who were in attendance.
“He’s a North Carolinian and he cares about the people of North Carolina and he cares about the state. He is a tremendous public servant. And so he is the right person to be governor at this time. He’s just a nice person and a tremendous individual,” said Reuben Young, who retired Tuesday after serving as Civil Bureau Chief for the North Carolina Department of Justice.
Cooper, who is out of office for the first time since 1987, participated in a transfer of seal ceremony and spoke Wednesday.
“I will sleep well tonight knowing that I am your constituent and that you are my governor,” said Cooper.
Stein’s election
Stein was elected after a contentious race against opponent Mark Robinson, who was at the time, serving as the state’s Lt. Governor.
Stein, like Cooper, catapulted from the attorney general’s office to the Executive Mansion. The win makes Stein the first Jewish governor of the Tar Heel State.
During his acceptance speech on election night, Josh Stein said “NC ’embraced a vision’ in electing him governor over challenger Mark Robinson.”
Stein appeared on ABC News “This Week” where he said that his service as North Carolina’s attorney general gave voters confidence and called the Tar Heel state a “bright spot” for Democrats on election night.
Stein takes office after lawmakers voted to override Cooper’s veto of Senate Bill 382, which strips the Governor, Attorney General and State Superintendent of some powers.
In mid-December, Stein announced several nominees for cabinet positions.

South Carolina’s Shane Beamer Takes Subtle Shot at Alabama and Ole Miss With Blunt Citrus Bowl Take
The CFP rankings always bring out the politicking in coaches. Lane Kiffin is known for his outspoken opinions. Now, it seems like Shane Beamer, the South Carolina head coach, is joining the fray. While Kiffin and Beamer might be playing nice on the surface, there’s definitely some underlying tension brewing. Beamer has been subtly throwing shade at both Kiffin’s Ole Miss and DeBoer’s Alabama for a while, implying that his Gamecocks deserve a playoff spot more.
According to Jordan Kaye’s X post, Shane Beamer stated, “We told our teammates the very first night that Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, chose us. They could have chose any team in the NCCA, any team, Alabama, Ole Miss, any of those teams. They had their choice, and they chose the University of South Carolina to be here.”
So, why South Carolina? They were on a hot streak, having won six straight games, including a big win over Clemson. The HC has attempted to argue that even though his team has lost to the Rebels and Bama, they are now playing better football, and he believes that should give them the advantage over the other two SEC teams.

Through the X post, the HC of SC is basically criticizing the Rebels and Bama because both teams had a 9-3 record and were not given the opportunity to enter the playoffs. However, in addition to that, he also expresses admiration for his own squad.
But before the Citrus Bowl, Beamer made a bold comment to stimulate the local fans. “They didn’t just choose our football team. They chose our fan base. So thank you guys for showing up. And as we told our players, we want to validate that decision. So you guys validated with what y’all do over the next two days. We’re going to do our part to make sure we try to validate it tomorrow as well,” said the head coach. Along with that, he mentioned, “We plan to make one heck of a data point tomorrow.”
And to get the fans even more excited, the third-year coach reminds them of South Carolina’s significant victories this season. They had some amazing moments during the 2024 football season, whether it was the triumph over Texas A&M at home, the game in Kentucky, or the second week in Lexington. It’s also important to remember the exciting win over Missouri as well as the even more remarkable triumph over the upstate squad last month.
Now, the 9-3 SEC team is ready to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. But what exactly was Coach Beamer hinting at when he talked about the game?
What’s Shane Beamer’s take on Illinois?

When SC coach Shane Beamer spoke to local reporters for the last time before the Citrus Bowl at the Rosen Plaza in Orlando, he had nothing but praise for former SEC-turned-Illinois coach Bret Bielema. The seasons of both groups ended with a 9-3 record. The Illini finished November with a 3-0 record, defeating teams like Rutgers, MI State, and Northwestern.
Tuesday’s Cheez-It bowl game between the SEC and the Big 10 will pit South Carolina against Illinois. In preparation for the NFL Draft, SEC Defensive Player of the Year Kyle Kennard will not be playing for the Gamecocks, who have been favorites in their last five games and are 4-1 against betting odds. It’s a homecoming for Illinois, who have 17 Florida players on their roster.
Despite all these, Gamecocks’ coach Beamer only praised the rival, Illinois. He stated, “They’re a good football team. They won nine football games. They’re in a league where they got four birds in the college football playoff as well, and they lost the two playoff teams. We’ve got a big challenge tomorrow.”

Undoubtedly a formidable task! The Bowl game was the consolation prize for the Gamecocks after the playoffs snub. And now they’re ready to see if they can bring home the trophy. Will Shane Beamer’s squad come out swinging against Illinois?
South Carolina’s Shane Beamer Takes Subtle Shot at Alabama and Ole Miss With Blunt Citrus Bowl TakeIn a recent press conference, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer didn’t hold back when discussing the upcoming Citrus Bowl matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide and Ole Miss Rebels.
When asked about facing two powerhouse SEC teams in the bowl game, Beamer didn’t mince his words. “We’re not intimidated by anyone,” he stated. “We may not have the same flashy offense as Ole Miss or the storied history of Alabama, but we’re a team that plays with heart and grit.”
Many saw Beamer’s comments as a subtle jab at Alabama and Ole Miss, who are known for their high-powered offenses and strong traditions. Beamer’s confidence in his team’s ability to compete at a high level against these tough opponents was evident in his words.
As the Gamecocks prepare to face Alabama and Ole Miss in the Citrus Bowl, it’s clear that Beamer and his team are ready to prove themselves on the national stage. And if his comments are any indication, they won’t back down from a challenge, no matter how daunting it may seem.

Duke Energy Carolinas customer rates drop 6.2% on Jan. 1 due to falling fuel prices
-
Decrease incorporates benefits from federal Nuclear Production Tax Credits, along with other rider adjustments
-
Annual bills for typical residential customer are $466 below national average
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 31, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Duke Energy Carolinas customers in North Carolina will see their electric rates fall starting Jan. 1 as part of an annual adjustment for the cost of fuel used to generate electricity at its power plants, along with other rider adjustments.
(PRNewsfoto/Duke Energy) A typical residential customer in North Carolina using 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month will see an overall decrease of $8.96, or about 6.2%, from current rates, falling from $144.31 to $135.35. That is 22% below the national average of $174.21 – a difference of approximately $466 per year.
Commercial customers will benefit from an average decrease in their bills of about 11.5%, and industrial customers will see an average decrease of less than 1%.
Duke Energy Carolinas serves about 2.2 million households and businesses in central and western North Carolina, including Charlotte, Durham and the Triad.
Elsewhere in the state, Duke Energy Progress customers are already benefiting from a 4.5% decrease that went into effect on Dec. 1.
Customer Savings Driven by Falling Fuel Prices
To ensure accurate rates, the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) annually reviews the fuel costs needed to generate electricity for customers, along with rider updates for state programs to encourage clean energy adoption and reduce energy use. The commission approved the following adjustments:
-
A decrease of 8.8% to adjust for falling fuel prices.
-
A decrease of 0.6% resulting from nuclear production tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA); more than half of Duke Energy’s power in the Carolinas comes from carbon-free nuclear.
-
Adjustments of less than 1% to existing riders for customer assistance, storm securitization, and energy efficiency and demand-side management programs to lower energy use.
-
An increase of 2.9% to base rates, as approved last January by the NCUC in its 2024 multiyear rate case order.
The collective result is a 6.2% rate reduction for typical residential customers – in other words, the decrease from fuel more than offset the second-year increase to base rates.
Duke Energy works to actively manage fuel contracts to keep costs as low as possible for customers. Bills reflect actual fuel costs – customers pay what we pay. Learn more at Fuel Costs & Your Bill.
Duke Energy Carolinas
Duke Energy Carolinas, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, owns 20,700 megawatts of energy capacity, supplying electricity to 2.9 million residential, commercial and industrial customers across a 24,000-square-mile service area in North Carolina and South Carolina.
Great news for Duke Energy Carolinas customers! Starting on January 1, customer rates will drop by 6.2% thanks to falling fuel prices. This reduction in rates will provide some much-needed relief for customers as they start the new year. Duke Energy Carolinas is committed to providing affordable and reliable energy to their customers, and this rate decrease is just one way they are fulfilling that promise. When Dawn Staley recalled having an ugly conversation with ESPN about South Carolina’s stature
Dawn Staley’s 2020 Gamecocks roster was ranked No. 1 in the preseason. However, the team ended its season with a last-second loss to Stanford in the Final Four. While talking about the struggles of that year on a Breakfast Club episode released in April 2022, Staley shed light on her battles with ESPN.
Staley believed that despite South Carolina’s top stature, ESPN pushed other teams into the limelight, marketing them as the teams with higher potential than the Gamecocks. So, when her team remained at the top near the end of the season, Dawn Staley recounts handing her two cents to some ESPN representatives.
“We were the number one team in the country for the last nine weeks of the season but you wouldn’t know it,” Staley said (29:00). “Because there was a different narrative out there created for other teams that they thought should have been number one.”
“But they lost and from that, I actually did talk to a couple of ESPN people about – how now that the bottom fell out we were the number one team in the country, you didn’t promote our team in that way.”
“And then they came back probably 45 minutes after that, I went into that coaching mode, in the coach mode of just bad behavior. So, I had that conversation, it wasn’t one that could be played on your show.”
Dawn Staley also touched on an instance from 2022, when the Gamecocks won the NCAA championship. She claimed that instead of talking highly of South Carolina’s defensive schemes, ESPN marketed that the Gamecocks are one of the lowest-scoring teams in NCAA Finals history.
Dawn Staley looking forward to the Christmas break
At the beginning of this month, Dawn Staley claimed that her roster had no reason to be tired despite the tough season-opening schedule. She said that she has designed the schedule in a way that allows players to focus only on basketball and studies.
Nevertheless, she admitted to being tired last week due to the tough first month of basketball.
“It was taxing. I was tired. I was tired, I look forward to this break. I look forward to our Christmas break,” Staley said (0:40). “Although we got a few more games to play, I think our players have really locked in. I know they have to be exhausted, physically, mentally and welcome the break that’s coming up. But they still want to approach each game and play to our standard.”
The Gamecocks won two more contests after the interview to catch an 11-day rest. The program resumes the season on Dec. 29 against Wofford Terriers.

When Dawn Staley, the head coach of the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team, recently spoke about an unpleasant encounter with ESPN regarding her team’s perceived stature, it shed light on the challenges faced by women’s sports programs in gaining recognition and respect.Staley shared that during a conversation with an ESPN executive, she was told that South Carolina needed to “earn their stripes” before being considered for more televised games. This comment not only disregarded the team’s impressive record and success, but also reflected a larger issue of gender bias and unequal treatment in sports media coverage.
Despite leading her team to multiple NCAA tournament appearances and a national championship, Staley and her players continue to fight for the recognition they deserve. This incident serves as a reminder of the disparities faced by women’s sports programs in terms of media coverage, funding, and overall support.
As fans and supporters of women’s sports, we must continue to advocate for equal opportunities and representation for these talented athletes. Dawn Staley’s story is a powerful reminder that we still have a long way to go in achieving gender equality in the world of sports.

When Dawn Staley recalled narrative vs South Carolina’s championship-winning team
Dawn Staley isn’t afraid to discuss sensitive subjects, like racial bias in sports. The South Carolina Gamecocks coach was asked about that topic during her guest appearance on “The Breakfast Club” at Power 105.1 FM on Apr. 14, 2022.
Staley was invited to the show after leading the Gamecocks to their second NCAA title. South Carolina had finished the 2021-22 season with a 35-2 record, culminating with a 64-49 victory over Geno Auriemma’s UConn Huskies in the national championship game.
Radio host Charlamagne tha God pointed out to Staley that some people seem to find other things to talk about the Gamecocks besides basketball. He asked Staley if that was because she was a black woman.
“I don’t know, but you can only assume because they’re not gonna come out and say that,” Staley replied. (Timestamp 30:02)
Staley gave an example of what the host alluded to regarding her championship-winning team.
“After the championship, there was a stat put up. We were the team that scored the least of all national championship teams,” Staley said.
“What’s that got to do with anything? Look at our defense. We’re probably a very historical defensive team in the whole scheme of things, but I don’t know why they chose to do that.”
Dawn Staley then gave a frank assessment of why the Gamecocks were treated differently by some people and the media.
“Honestly, it’s hard for people to market black people,” Staley said. “They claim they don’t know how when it’s just very similar. Or just to stick with the facts. If you just stick with the facts, it’s easy to market a team.”
Dawn Staley led South Carolina to NCAA title after historic 2021-22 season
Dawn Staley (right) Dawn Staley entered the record books following South Carolina’s win over UConn, becoming the first Black coach in the history of NCAA Division I basketball (men’s or women’s) to win at least two national championships. Staley captured her first NCAA title in 2017 when the Gamecocks beat the No. 2 Mississippi State Bulldogs in the final.
Staley won her second title in style, handing Geno Auriemma and the Huskies their first loss in a national championship game. Destanni Henderson scored 26 points while Aliyah Boston recorded a double-double with 11 points and 16 boards for the Gamecocks, who led from start to finish.
They displayed their top-caliber defense, limiting Paige Bueckers to just 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She was the only player to score in double figures for the Huskies, who shot 4-of-16 from beyond the arc.
