The following article contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, so beware if you haven’t caught the fun family flick yet!

If you’ve been keeping up to date with the 2024 movie schedule, you probably know about the hit release Sonic the Hedgehog 3 which has earned a solid review from CinemaBlend and easily sprinted past the competition at the holiday box office this weekend. While it continues the story of the famous speedy hedgehog and his team, there’s one particular dance sequence that had me laughing, and director Jeff Fowler told me how they brought it to life –specifically with the help of Jim Carrey.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Dr. Robotnick (played by Jim Carrey) meets his long-lost grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnick (also Carrey), and when the two of them don special suits in order to sneak through a laser-filled room, of course, a totally hilarious dance sequence breaks out. I was so enamored by the scene that when I spoke with director Jeff Fowler, I asked him about how it came together.

Apparently, it was actually Jim Carrey’s idea in the first place, as he told CinemaBlend:

That’s one of my favorite scenes, as well. That idea, the credit goes to Jim. He had done in the first film that one little scene in his mobile lab where he puts on the music and does a little dancing and then gets interrupted by Stone. In one of our very early conversations on movie three, he said, ‘I want to dance again.’ And I said, ‘Great, let’s do it.’ So if we were going to do it again, we were going to go big and literally double down on the dancing and have Ivo and Gerald there doing a duo. But it was so much fun to design that, to plan it. We had an amazing choreography team. We had amazing dancers. Everyone just brought their A-game and just delivered an amazing sequence.

Honestly, I’m not surprised it was Jim Carrey’s idea to bring the dance sequence to life as a callback to earlier in the franchise. His moment in the first film was super funny, but adding a dance team to choreograph, an intense set design and having two Carreys performing at the same time made it all the more over-the-top—so much so that I’d willingly pay to see the movie again just to watch this moment. I mean, Carrey is notoriously hands-on with his roles, so it makes total sense he would up the ante for the third film.

Carrey’s ideas for Robotnick and his grandfather have paid off. Prior to the film’s release, some critics said Jim Carrey stole the show from Shadow (Keanu Reeves) and that he was really one of the biggest draws of this movie for his “epic performance.” Plus, Jeff Fowler has said cool things about working with Carrey on set before and how he always wants to work hard and deliver in his roles, and this time around, he delivered twice as much hilarity.

The film’s ending doesn’t give us a ton of hope for Robotnik (or his grandfather) returning, but Carrey did previously say he was retired and then returned for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, so never say never. Maybe we’ll get lucky enough in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 to see Carrey pull off another fun dance sequence.

As a long-time fan of the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise, I was beyond excited to see the newest installment, Sonic The Hedgehog 3. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

One scene in particular had me in stitches – the dance sequence featuring Jim Carrey as the villainous Dr. Robotnik. Carrey’s over-the-top performance and comedic timing had me laughing so hard I was practically crying.

But what really impressed me was learning how Carrey choreographed the entire dance himself. In an interview, he revealed that he spent weeks practicing and perfecting the routine, even enlisting the help of professional dancers to ensure he nailed every move.

It was clear that Carrey put his heart and soul into that scene, and it definitely paid off. The end result was a hilarious and memorable moment that had me tapping my toes and laughing out loud.

Overall, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 was a fantastic film filled with action, humor, and heart. And thanks to Jim Carrey’s dedication and talent, the dance sequence was a highlight that I won’t soon forget.

Jim Carrey Explains How Sonic Films Changed His Perspective On Appearing In Sequels

    Summary

    • Sonic the Hedgehog films break records, but Jim Carrey breaks his anti-sequel stance.
    • Jim Carrey’s return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was influenced by Dr. Robotnik’s character evolution.
    • Carrey’s reversal on sequels mirrors other actors like Robert Pattinson and Daniel Craig.

Sonic the Hedgehog films may have broken records and set standards for future video game-to-film adaptations, but it also broke the tradition of one of its film stars, Jim Carrey.

As an adaptation of the famous SEGA game of the same name, the Sonic the Hedgehog mini-franchise has released three feature films and a TV show since its big screen debut in 2020. The first two films earned a combined $720 million at the box office, and the third, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, had a domestic opening of $60 million, beating Mufasa: The Lion King as the biggest movie of December at the box office. Jim Carrey’s eccentric mad scientist Dr. Robotnik, which features in all three movies, has become one of the later defining moments of the actor’s career.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s First Reactions Are In

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has received praise from critics who already watched the film weeks before its theatrical release.

Sonic the Hedgehog Changed Jim Carrey’s Stance on Sequels

Before Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s release, Jim Carrey, in an exclusive interview with GamesRadar+ revealed how the Sonic films changed his approach to sequels and franchises:

“For some reason, I’ve never wanted to do sequels. I’ve never really wanted to do franchise stuff. It didn’t occur to me. I just thought, ‘I want to move on and do something new’… Maybe six months before the first Sonic movie, I thought to myself I’d like to have a character that I could sit with for a bit for a few films. Especially if it could evolve, if it could change from film to film.”

Dr. Robotnik’s character development across the films, as stated by Carrey, was key in his decision to return.

“Robotnik has been able to evolve in his look and his manner from film to film. Every time he gets defeated, he becomes more bitter and hostile. His megalomania gets ratched up and these inventions, the technological wonders that he keeps coming up with, keep topping themselves.”

Jim Carrey’s comments to GamesRadar+ come less than a fortnight after the 62-year-old shared that his decision to return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3—after announcing his retirement post-Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2022—was because he needed the money. While his salary for the Sonic films remains undisclosed, Carrey’s asking price is sure to be hefty, evident in the 1996 movie The Cable Guy, for which he was paid $20 million —a Hollywood record at the time.

Bar Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Dumb and Dumber To, Carrey has generally refrained from doing for sequels. However, he is not the only famous Hollywood actor to loathe dedication to franchises only to later make a U-turn. Despite starring in the Twilight Saga films, Robert Pattinson was averse to featuring in franchises, that is, until Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which is set to be a trilogy. Patrick Stewart initially refused to reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Picard series but changed his mind after the writers and producers pitched an eye-watering story. Perhaps most famously, James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, confessed that he would rather “slash his wrists” than suit up as the most famous spy agent in the world, but later returned as 007 for No Time to Die—albeit for the last time.

There’s no telling whether Jim Carrey will show up for any plans Paramount has for Dr. Robotnik, or if he would make good on his retirement plans, but fans can already have a good guess from his past comments.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released on December 20 and is currently showing in cinemas worldwide.

Keanu Reeves shared his favorite Sonic superpower that he wished he would have in real-life.

Jim Carrey, the comedic genius known for his iconic roles in films such as “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” and “The Truman Show,” recently opened up about how starring in the “Sonic the Hedgehog” films changed his perspective on appearing in sequels.

In an interview with Collider, Carrey revealed that he was initially hesitant to sign on for the role of the villainous Dr. Robotnik in the first “Sonic” film. However, after seeing the positive response from fans and critics alike, he knew he had to return for the sequel.

Carrey explained, “I’ve always been wary of sequels because you never know if you can capture lightning in a bottle twice. But with ‘Sonic,’ I felt like we really struck a chord with audiences, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to continue the story.”

The actor went on to discuss how working on the franchise has reignited his passion for filmmaking, stating, “Being a part of the ‘Sonic’ films has been such a joyous experience for me. It’s reminded me why I love making movies and connecting with audiences in a meaningful way.”

Carrey’s newfound enthusiasm for sequels is a refreshing change of pace for the actor, who has famously shied away from reprising his roles in the past. Fans can look forward to seeing him reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” set to hit theaters in 2022.

Jim Carrey Officially Has His Career Best Rotten Tomatoes Streak Thanks To Sonic The Hedgehog

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has given Jim Carrey the best Rotten Tomatoes streak of his entire career. Though Jim Carrey is most known for his 1900s hits, which include Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, Liar Liar, and The Truman Show, his practice stood strong as far as the late-2000s before hitting a rough patch of roles that lasted over 10 years. With Dr. Robotnik, the actor returned to his signature physical and cartoonish comedy, proving he’s still got that charm and talent that won people’s hearts so long ago.

The actor’s commitment to the franchise has been made evident time and time again, as Jim Carrey has repeatedly broken career rules for Sonic the Hedgehog so that he can come back to reprise his now iconic role. Considered one of the movies that defined Jim Carrey’s career, Sonic the Hedgehog and its sequels continue to be the gift that keeps on giving. They have eased the actor’s return to his love of his craft, allowed him to captivate old and new audiences, and positioned him for the longest best Rotten Tomatoes streak of his career.

Jim Carrey Has Gone Five Years Without A Rotten Movie

Even if almost every Jim Carrey movie was an instant classic, they’re not known for having the best Rotten Tomatoes scores. Surprisingly, beloved films like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Bruce Almighty, and Fun With Dick and Jane actually have pretty low reviews. Considering Carrey’s filmography features a lot of irreverent and child-like humor, it makes sense that critics struggle to take it seriously despite its proven ability to enthrall audiences worldwide and produce box office successes.

On the other hand, the actor’s acclaimed performances in projects like Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind and Man on the Moon didn’t necessarily earn a lot on their theatrical release. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, however, achieved something only a few of Carrey’s movies have done, and it did so in record time. The popular movies have done great at the box office and with critics — with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 earning the highest Rotten Tomatoes score, and giving its actor five straight years without a Rotten movie, something Carrey had never achieved before.

Jim Carrey’s late-career success with Sonic the Hedgehog could have to do with the fact that the actor had never been a part of a genre franchise before. Notably, the actor had previously shown himself adamant about doing sequels and had even announced his retirement in 2022, after the second installment, telling Access Hollywood that he would only return “If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see” (via Variety).
