Carson City to see rain but no slush this weekend
A wet weekend is expected for Carson City, with an estimated inch and a half of rainfall through Monday.
Percentages of precipitation vary over the weekend, with the highest percentage (a 50% chance) expected between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Come Monday, the storm is expected to taper off, with Carson City seeing a 20% chance of rain.
“Then we’re going to see some more rain starting Tuesday,” said meteorologist Gigi Giralte at the National Weather Service in Reno.
Giralte said the main issue for Western Nevada valleys is the amount of rainfall that is expected; however, flooding isn’t likely.
“We are mostly concerned about flooding in northeast California,” Giralte said. “There’s potential for some increased ponding, like on roadways.”
The storm isn’t expected to transition into snow in the valleys.
“The highest peaks in the Sierra will be seeing snow. The snow levels are above 8,000 feet for much of Saturday and Sunday,” Giralte said.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Tahoe Basin through 10 p.m. Saturday. Giralte said elevations above 7,000 feet could see between 6-12 inches of snow. The storm is expected to continue in the upper elevations, with 1-2 feet of snow expected through Monday evening.
While a wind watch doesn’t include the Tahoe Basin, Carson City is prone to wind gusts starting Sunday.
“We could see some really strong southwest winds with gusts up to 65 mph for those wind-prone areas,” Giralte said. “Ridgetops could be seeing winds up to 100 mph.”
As with any windstorm, power outages could go into effect. To prepare for outages, NV Energy recommends:
• Call 911 if you encounter a downed power line, and do not approach or touch the line.
• Create an emergency kit that includes a blanket, flashlight, batteries and first aid supplies. Store these items in a water-tight container.
• If you are experiencing an outage, keep refrigerators and freezers closed to reduce food spoilage. If unopened and full, food can last for two days.
“In preparation, we have increased the number of personnel in our service territories throughout the weekend to respond quickly and safely throughout the state,” an NV Energy news release said.
To report an outage, visit nvenergy.com/outageprep or call 775-834-4444
With the wind and the winter weather advisory, motorists should be advised about travel difficulties especially over the Sierras.

Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for their pivotal AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills. Patrick Mahomes remains the undisputed starter, but backup quarterback Carson Wentz stands ready should any unexpected scenario unfold.
The stakes couldn’t be higher for the Chiefs. They’re chasing NFL history with a potential third consecutive Super Bowl victory – a feat never accomplished in league history. The team’s phenomenal 15-2 regular season record shows Mahomes’ continued dominance, despite experiencing statistical challenges this season.
While Mahomes is set to lead the charge, Wentz represents a critical contingency plan for the Chiefs’ championship aspirations. His recent performance, however, raises questions about potential game readiness.

Carson Wentz’s underwhelming start against Broncos
NFL: Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos – Source: Imagn In the regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos, Carson Wentz‘s showing was far from stellar. The former North Dakota State quarterback struggled, throwing for fewer than 100 yards in a comprehensive 38-0 loss.
“We didn’t play great as a team. I didn’t play my best, either,” said Wentz said after the game.
Playing against the Broncos fighting for playoff positioning, he struggled to generate offensive momentum. The game featured multiple backup players since key players were rested.
The quarterback’s assessment remained measured.
“It was fun to get out there, give myself and a lot of guys a chance to just go out there and compete,” Wentz said
The matchup against the Buffalo Bills carries additional significance. This game represents a rematch of one of the Chiefs’ two regular-season losses – a 30-21 defeat on November 17th. Josh Allen, the Bills’ quarterback and MVP favorite, stands as Mahomes’ primary rival in what promises to be an electrifying contest.
Mahomes’ journey this season has been anything but conventional. But his career-low passing yards (3,928) and touchdowns (26) haven’t deterred his leadership.
The game kicks off with immense implications. The Chiefs seek to etch their name in NFL history, while the Bills aim to disrupt their championship dreams.
Edited by Krutik Jain
As the AFC championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals approaches, one question looms large for Chiefs fans: Is Carson Wentz starting at quarterback? The status of the Chiefs’ quarterbacks has been a topic of much speculation leading up to the big game. Patrick Mahomes, the team’s star quarterback, suffered a toe injury in the divisional round game against the Buffalo Bills. While Mahomes was able to finish the game, there have been concerns about his mobility and effectiveness heading into the championship game.
In the event that Mahomes is unable to play, Carson Wentz could potentially step in as the starting quarterback for the Chiefs. Wentz, who was acquired by the Chiefs in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts earlier this season, has experience as a starting quarterback in the NFL and could provide a solid backup option for the team.
However, it remains to be seen whether Wentz will indeed start in place of Mahomes. Head coach Andy Reid has been tight-lipped about the quarterback situation, leading to speculation and uncertainty among fans and analysts.
As the game draws near, all eyes will be on the Chiefs’ quarterback situation. Will it be Mahomes leading the team to victory, or will Wentz be called upon to step up in his absence? Chiefs fans will have to wait until game day to find out.

Carson Wentz Will Have To Sit And Watch His Backup In The Super Bowl, Again
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images
By Mike Hennelly
The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs are set to face each other in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years. The Chiefs won the first time in a thriller off a last-second field goal.
Jalen Hurts Vs. Patrick Mahomes: Career Head-To-Head Ahead Of Super Bowl 59
The Eagles are making their fifth Super Bowl appearance and third in the last eight years. They have a 1-3 record in the big game with their first and only Super Bowl win being during the 2017 season against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
The Eagles beat the legendary quarterback, Brady, with their backup quarterback. Nick Foles took over for Carson Wentz who was injured on a touchdown run that was called back for offensive holding in a Week 14 game against the Los Angeles Rams. Wentz remained in the game for four more plays and threw a two-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Alshon Jeffery on fourth down. On the Eagles’ next offensive possession, Wentz was replaced by Foles.
It was later confirmed that Wentz had suffered a torn ACL and would miss the remainder of the season. Before his injury, Wentz led the Eagles to a 10-2 record and had the lead late in the third quarter in a close game against the Rams. The former second overall pick was the 2017 MVP front-runner, so his injury was a huge blow to the Eagles’ Super Bowl aspirations.
Foles finished the game against the Rams with a win and won the next two games against the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders. Former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson decided to remove his starters, including Foles, after the first quarter in a 6-0 regular-season finale loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
There was a lot of skepticism surrounding Foles and the Eagles’ offense heading into the 2017 playoffs. The Eagles were the NFC’s No. 1 seed and had a first-round bye. They hosted Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons in the Divisional Round and squeaked out a 15-10 win after a fourth down stop at the two-yard line off an incomplete pass intended for wide receiver Julio Jones.
Nick Foles Was Unintentional Demise Of Carson Wentz’s Career In Philadelphia
The Divisional Round win didn’t ease Eagles fans’ comfort with Foles and the offense heading into the NFC Championship Game against the Minnesota Vikings. Foles passed for 352 yards and three touchdowns with a 141.4 passer rating in a 38-7 blowout win to punch the Eagles’ ticket to Super Bowl 52. The Eagles’ offense had 456 total yards and no turnovers in the win.
The city of Philadelphia felt a lot better with Foles and the Eagles’ chances heading into the Super Bowl against the Patriots. Foles threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns in the 41-33 victory to earn the first Super Bowl in franchise history. He delivered one of the most iconic plays in NFL history, The Philly Special, and has a statue outside of Lincoln Financial Field with Pederson to commemorate the moment forever. Foles was named Super Bowl MVP.
Wentz had to sit on the sidelines and watch Foles, his backup, go on that special run with the Eagles. With the way Wentz was playing before his injury, the Eagles likely would’ve still won the Super Bowl, but he was never the same when he returned to the field.
Draft Day Analysis: What Can We Determine About Drafting Quarterbacks?
After an injury-riddled 2018 season and more playoff success by Foles, there was a major quarterback controversy in Philadelphia about whether to stick with Wentz as the team’s starting quarterback or give the job to Foles. The Eagles decided to award Wentz with a massive four-year contract extension ahead of the 2019 season, and Foles signed a four-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
It was a rollercoaster season for Wentz and the Eagles in 2019, but he managed to lead his team to the playoffs. The franchise quarterback was finally set to play in his first playoff game with the Eagles but was injured on the team’s second offensive possession after a hit to the head by former Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. He was ruled out with a concussion and was replaced by veteran journeyman quarterback Josh McCown. The Eagles lost 17-9 and were eliminated from the playoffs.
Quarterback Decisions That Led Jalen Hurts To Eagles’ Starting Job
After making Wentz the highest-paid player in the NFL the offseason prior, the Eagles shockingly drafted quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Wentz had the worst season of his career, leading to another quarterback controversy. The Eagles had a 3-7-1 record through Week 12, and Wentz was statistically one of the worst quarterbacks in the league.
The Eagles faced the Green Bay Packers in Week 13 of the 2020 season. They were down 20-3 midway through the third quarter, and Wentz was just 6/15 for 79 yards. Pederson replaced Wentz with the rookie Hurts who led a late comeback. It was a 23-16 game late in the fourth quarter but Hurts and the Eagles ultimately fell short, losing 30-16. Hurts was 5/12 for 109 yards and a touchdown and had 29 rushing yards.
Pederson decided to bench Wentz and stick with Hurts for the remainder of the season. The Eagles had a 1-3 record through the last four games with Hurts at the helm, but the young quarterback impressed.
The Eagles traded Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts for a third-round and a conditional second-round pick. The drama was over and Hurts became the starting quarterback with first-year head coach Nick Sirianni taking over for Pederson who was fired.
Fast-forward four years and the decision to move on from Wentz and move forward with Hurts looks like it played out well for the Eagles. Hurts has a 46-20 career record as the Eagles’ starting quarterback and has led his team to four consecutive playoff appearances, including two trips to the Super Bowl. He’s a winner and one of the most dynamic quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL.
Since he left the Eagles, Wentz spent one season with the Colts, one season with the Washington Commanders, one season with the Rams, and is the current backup quarterback for the Chiefs. The 32-year-old has been relegated to a backup quarterback in the league over the last three years.
With the Eagles and Chiefs set to face each other in Super Bowl 59 on February 9, Wentz will again have to watch his former backup play in the big game. This time he’ll be on the opposite team, but Hurts and the Eagles can cause unwelcomed flashbacks for Wentz if they end up hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. Who knows, maybe Patrick Mahomes will get hurt, forcing Wentz to enter the game against his former team and backup.
As the Super Bowl approaches, it looks like Carson Wentz will once again have to sit on the sidelines and watch his backup lead the team to victory. Just like in 2017 when Nick Foles stepped in and led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl win, this time it’s Jalen Hurts who will be taking the reins for the Indianapolis Colts.Despite being the starting quarterback for most of the season, Wentz’s inconsistent play and inability to stay healthy have led to him being benched in favor of Hurts. And just like Foles did before him, Hurts has stepped up and played at a high level, earning the trust and respect of his teammates and coaches.
While it may be tough for Wentz to watch from the sidelines, he can take solace in knowing that he played a part in getting the team to this point. And who knows, maybe he’ll get another shot at leading a team to the Super Bowl in the future. But for now, he’ll have to sit back and watch as his backup takes center stage on the biggest stage in football.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Carson Wentz was 1,122 miles from the stadium where his NFL career began in 2016 and 1,512 days removed from making his last NFL start in an Eagles uniform.
He posed for pictures alongside Patrick Mahomes and his other Chiefs teammates inside the Kansas City locker room at Arrowhead Stadium just after 9:30 p.m. local time Sunday. This time of year, seven years ago, he was preparing to watch Nick Foles lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots while he was sidelined with a torn ACL in his left knee.
The years between Super Bowl appearances for Wentz have been anything but a clear path. From a sour ending in Philly in 2020 to one-year stints with the Indianapolis Colts in 2021 and Washington Commanders in 2022 to briefly backing up Matthew Stafford last season with the Los Angeles Rams, Wentz’s career trajectory looks much different from the expectations set for him in his MVP-caliber 2017 season.
But as he beamed with joy in a cigar-stenched locker room on the verge of a chance at a first-ever three-peat, Wentz had plenty of perspective on what the moment meant for him.

“It’s been a journey,” Wentz told The Inquirer as music blasted after the Chiefs’ 32-29 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC championship game. “Every day, or every year, has been something different so far, but I’m just along for the ride, and God’s been good, just continuing to open doors. [I’m] still playing the game I love, and it might look different, but [I’m] still having fun.”
Here was Wentz, now the Chiefs backup quarterback, with just two starts over the last two years in inconsequential regular-season finales, basking in the midst of another special run for a Kansas City squad that has become accustomed to this spot.
As players began filing into the locker room after the field celebration, Wentz was one of the last players to join his teammates there, soaking in the moment with his wife, Madison Oberg, and their three daughters. The 32-year-old admitted that his family has “been along for quite the journey last couple years, too,” but added that seeing his wife and girls celebrate the win is “so fun to see them just light up and come to support me, support their team.”
Wentz has backed up two Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks in consecutive years, sitting behind Stafford last season and Mahomes this year. He says he has relished watching two of the best quarterbacks in the game operate and has picked up things from each “that I can implement [to my own game].”
“Whether it’s just their preparation or play, though they play completely different,” Wentz said, “they’re both just the ultimate competitors. Being able to back them up and learn from them, and just be a part of the culture that they’re instilling in their respective organizations has been fun to be a part of it.”
The feeling is mutual for Mahomes, who took some time postgame to praise Wentz’s work ethic and how early he arrives at the facility.
“Carson is extremely intelligent,” Mahomes said. “You see why he has the talent, you see why he was a starting quarterback in this league, an MVP-level quarterback in this league, and so excited for him. I know he got the Super Bowl when he was in Philly, but to be able to go up against the Eagles again … it’ll be a great moment to be able to go up and do that and try to do whatever we can to find a way to get a win.”

Wentz and the Chiefs, led by former Eagles coach Andy Reid, will have a rematch with the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. On top of Reid facing his old team in the big game for the second time in three seasons, Wentz will get a chance to face the team that drafted him second overall nine years ago, although he’ll be watching from the sideline again on the big stage.
In evaluating his options this offseason, Wentz knew he wanted to be a part of the “winning culture” Reid has created with the Chiefs, winners of three Super Bowls over the last five years. He signed with the Chiefs on April 1 last year. Out of all the things he has experienced this season, from getting to start in the Chiefs’ Week 18 loss to the Denver Broncos to Sunday night’s thrilling win, Wentz says his favorite part of the season is “cherishing those memories [in the locker room], cherishing your time that you have with the guys.”
» READ MORE: Mike Sielski: The Eagles are underdogs no more
“Coach Reid definitely was a big part [of me coming here], just being a part of what he’s been building here, and has built here,” Wentz said. “Just learning from him, and the intricate offense and just the creativity that they’ve been instilling, and just his coaching style and the full-fledged respect that he has from everybody in the building, it’s been really fun, and it’s definitely been special for me this year.”
Wentz says the Feb. 9 matchup between the Eagles and Chiefs is ”just another ballgame,” noting that he has already started against the Eagles, in 2022 as the Commanders’ quarterback. And although the game won’t entail Wentz and Jalen Hurts facing off head-to-head in two weeks, the predecessor vs. the successor, Wentz is preparing in case his number is called at Caesars Superdome for all the marbles.
And as for his time in Philly?
“That feels like five, six lifetimes ago at this point,” Wentz said with a smile, but added, “but I’m grateful for my time there, without a doubt, and it’ll be a fun one in two weeks.”
In a shocking turn of events, the Kansas City Chiefs have announced that Carson Wentz will be starting in the Super Bowl against his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, as Patrick Mahomes’ backup. After Mahomes suffered a season-ending injury in the AFC Championship game, Wentz was called upon to lead the Chiefs to victory in the biggest game of the year. Despite being acquired by Kansas City as a backup quarterback earlier in the season, Wentz has proven himself as a capable and reliable leader on the field.
This Super Bowl matchup is sure to be a thrilling showdown between two powerhouse teams, with Wentz looking to prove himself against his former team and lead the Chiefs to victory. Will he be able to outshine his former team and lift the Lombardi Trophy as Mahomes’ backup? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an unforgettable Super Bowl showdown.
