DJ Hernandez sentenced to time served in shooting threats case
HARTFORD, Conn. — The brother of the late New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was sentenced Friday to 18 months of prison time already served for threatening to carry out a shooting at the University of Connecticut and to kill three people, including a judge, in 2023.
Dennis Hernandez, 38, who went by “DJ” while playing quarterback and wide receiver for UConn football in the mid-2000s, was suffering severe mental health problems at the time of the threats and has since received treatment and medication, according to his public defender, Josh Ewing.
U.S. District Judge Sarala Nagala in Hartford also sentenced Hernandez to three years of supervised release, during which he must continue mental health and substance abuse treatment, allow probation officials to monitor his electronic devices and stay away from UConn and other locations he threatened, the Connecticut U.S. attorney’s office said.
Hernandez, who apologized for his actions during brief comments in court, was expected to be released from custody Friday afternoon, The Hartford Courant reported. Federal Bureau of Prison records showed he was no longer in custody Friday evening.
A message left at a phone listed for Hernandez was not immediately returned.
State criminal charges in Connecticut and Florida in other cases — including allegations he threw a brick with a note critical of the media onto ESPN headquarters property in Bristol, Connecticut — are expected to be dismissed because of the federal case, Ewing said, adding that those incidents happened during the same mental health crisis.
Ewing did not immediately return phone and email messages after the sentencing. In court documents, he wrote that Hernandez was “horrified” at how his actions terrified others, is remorseful and committed to maintaining his mental health.
Hernandez pleaded guilty to a felony — transmitting interstate communications containing a threat to injure — in December.
Police said he drove to the UConn campus and to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he once served as quarterbacks coach, to “map the schools out” for a shooting in July 2023. Court filings said Hernandez was struggling financially, was frustrated at seeing other people get hired as football coaches and felt owed by UConn.
Also that month, prosecutors said Hernandez made multiple Facebook posts threatening to harm or kill three people who live in other states, including a state court judge.
His mother, Terri Hernandez, told police around the time of his 2023 arrest in Bristol that he had deteriorating mental health problems, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Dennis Hernandez was shocked with a Taser and taken into custody after he came out of his sister’s house with his arms raised, yelling “shoot me” and threatening to harm officers, police said.
Terri Hernandez and several other relatives and friends wrote letters to the judge supporting Dennis Hernandez asking that he be released from detention.
DJ Hernandez, the brother of former NFL star Aaron Hernandez, has been sentenced to time served in a case involving shooting threats.DJ Hernandez was arrested in May after allegedly making threats to shoot someone during an argument in Connecticut. He was charged with reckless endangerment and breach of peace.
After spending several months in jail awaiting trial, DJ Hernandez appeared in court on Tuesday where he was sentenced to time served. The judge also ordered him to complete anger management classes and to stay away from the victim.
This case has garnered attention due to DJ Hernandez’s connection to his brother Aaron, who was convicted of murder in 2015 and ultimately took his own life in prison.
It remains to be seen how DJ Hernandez will move forward from this incident, but for now, he has been given a second chance with his sentence of time served.

Suicide or homicide? Ellen Greenberg case getting new look by ME – NBC10 Philadelphia
Before a civil case could get underway Monday, the family of Ellen Greenberg and Philadelphia officials reached an agreement to reopen the teacher’s death investigation more than 14 years after she was found stabbed to death in her Manayunk apartment.
The settlement reached on Feb. 3, 2025, means that the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office will reopen and reinvestigate Greenberg’s manner of death.
The medical examiner who ruled Greenberg’s 2011 death a homicide, then later suicide, in recent days released a new legal verification stating that he now believes the case should be ruled as “something other than suicide.”
On Jan. 26, 2011, Ellen Greenberg was found dead by her fiancé in the kitchen of her apartment on Flat Rock Road in Philadelphia’s Manayunk neighborhood. The 27-year-old first-grade teacher had suffered 20 stab wounds.
Philadelphia Police and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office both investigated her death.
Philadelphia Medical Examiner Marlon Osbourne initially ruled her death a homicide, noting the large number of stab wounds, including 10 to the back of her neck. After police publicly challenged the findings, Osbourne switched the ruling to suicide without explanation.
In a statement filed on Friday, Jan. 31, Dr. Osbourne explained that he decided to make this change after reviewing additional information in her case file that he obtained from the Philadelphia Police Department as well as a consult from Dr. Lucy Rorke-Adams, who is a pediatric neuropathologist and who had worked at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dr. Osbourne went on to write in his verification that he is now unsure of the series of events that happened that day. He wrote he didn’t know “whether the door was forced open as reported; whether Ellen’s body was moved by someone else inside the apartment with her at or near the time of her death; and the findings of Lindsey Emery, M.D., from her neuropathological evaluation of Ellen’s cervical segment sample.”
The statement came on the same day that a judge ruled that Dr. Osbourne must testify at the dismissed civil trial along with another medical examiner Sam Gulino and homicide detective John McNamee.
Over the past several years, Greenberg’s parents – Josh and Sandee Greenberg – have sought to have the ruling changed back to homicide and filed a lawsuit against Philadelphia. The city has objected, arguing that state law “makes clear that a medical examiner can be wrong as to the manner of death yet cannot be compelled to change it.”
“I’m hoping we’re going to prove that Ellen did not commit suicide,” Ellen’s father, Josh Greenberg, told NBC10 late last year. “That’s what this is all about. Justice for Ellen.”
In 2018, the investigation was turned over to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office for review. The investigation was then turned over to Chester County detectives in August 2022 in order to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.
Chester County detectives first conducted a review of the Philadelphia police and attorney general’s office investigations. They also conducted new interviews and consulted with an independent forensic expert.
Then in November 2024, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office announced that they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime was committed and the investigation was placed as inactive. Despite this, Greenberg’s parents – who currently live in Florida – have continued to fight to change the ruling of their daughter’s death while insisting she was murdered.
After Monday’s settlement, attorneys representing the city declined to comment. However, attorneys representing the Greenbergs said they were told the new review would be done expeditiously.
The mysterious death of Ellen Greenberg, a 27-year-old woman found dead in her Philadelphia apartment in 2011, is receiving a fresh examination by the Medical Examiner’s Office. Originally ruled a suicide by multiple stab wounds, the case has raised questions and suspicions among Greenberg’s family and friends, who believe foul play may have been involved. The decision to reevaluate the cause of Greenberg’s death comes after years of public outcry and pressure from advocacy groups. The new investigation will include a review of forensic evidence, witness statements, and a deeper analysis of the crime scene.
Many are hopeful that a new perspective on the case will shed light on what truly happened to Ellen Greenberg on that fateful day. As the investigation unfolds, the question remains: Was it suicide or homicide?
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as NBC10 Philadelphia continues to cover the latest developments in the Ellen Greenberg case.

Making a case for why the Bills should trade for Maxx Crosby
Brandon Beane has taken a big swing before.
Nearly three years ago, the Buffalo Bills’ general manager hid in the weeds before pouncing early in unrestricted free agency, shocking the NFL by landing edge rusher Von Miller.
The move never quite panned out, as Miller tore his ACL midway through his first season with the team.
Perhaps Beane had that in the back of his mind Thursday during his end-of-season news conference when he said, “You’re never one player away. That’s a dangerous mindset to get into.”
Maybe so. But let’s live dangerously, shall we?
Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby would be an ideal trade target for the Bills this offseason.
The Bills should go all in this offseason on a trade for Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby.
Yes, the cost will be steep.
Here’s my response to that: So what?
People are also reading…
Beane said he learned at a young age that chasing a player, or even a position, is not the right answer – even if his pursuit of Miller suggested otherwise. But in the next breath, he brought up just how close this team is.
“This team had championship ability. I do believe that,” he said. “Sometimes, you leave the season and you say, ‘Man, I don’t know if we if we gave ourselves a chance,’ but ultimately, like … it’s down to a few plays.”
If we’ve learned anything over the past five seasons, four of which ended with playoff losses to the Chiefs, it is that the Bills don’t have enough players capable of making those plays. If they did, the results would be different.
It is on Beane to go get more of those players this offseason. That’s where Crosby comes in.
Raiders owner Mark Davis has stressed that he won’t trade Crosby, but he would be wise to at least consider it. Las Vegas is in the middle of a rebuild, and years away from contention in the stacked AFC West. If Crosby’s not up for that, he could gently get his point across that a trade would be preferable.
Crosby is signed through 2026, and would have salary cap hits of $22.9 million and $19.7 million for any team trading for him. By NFL standards for an elite edge rusher, that’s a team-friendly deal. Of course, Crosby would probably want a new deal if he were to be traded, and the Bills can accommodate that.
The team will be able to free up some cap space this offseason by cutting Miller. That also opens up a spot in the defensive line rotation for Crosby to slide right into.
Crosby turns 28 shortly before the start of the 2025 season, and is coming off something of a down year by his lofty standards. He played in just 12 games because of an ankle injury in 2024, but he still finished with 7½ sacks and 17 tackles for loss. In the two years before that, he was an absolute force, with 27 sacks, an NFL-leading 45 tackles for loss and 67 quarterback hits. He is elite at rushing the passer and defending the run. He’s young enough that he should be able to overcome the ankle injury.
He is the type of game-changing talent the Bills should be searching high and low for this offseason. The No. 1 reason the Bills can’t get past the Chiefs in the playoffs is their defense. That can’t sit well with Sean McDermott – a defensive-minded head coach.
The Bills don’t love to blitz, preferring instead to rely on four-man rushes to create pressure, allowing them to cover with seven. The problem is, the four-man rush isn’t good enough as constructed, and the Bills have no reasonable path improving their four-man rush next season without making a bold move. Crosby would be that.
You want to make life easier for Greg Rousseau and Ed Oliver? You want to give them more one-on-one rush opportunities? Put Crosby on the line and let opposing offenses figure out how to block all of them.
By all accounts, Crosby would also fit perfectly in the locker room. He was a team captain for the Raiders and is one of the most respected players in the league. The Bills showed during their 2024 run that the culture matters. Yes, talent trumps all, but when there is an opportunity to add a player who would strengthen the bond inside the locker room, that’s an added bonus. Crosby certainly looks like he could do just that.
Understandably, the Raiders won’t be eager to move Crosby. Hiring the 73-year-old Pete Carroll as their new coach also isn’t a move a rebuilding team would typically make. Crosby himself has said all the right things about being excited to be a part of the Raiders’ turnaround. Again, that is what you would expect from a team captain and leader.
Still, the Bills can put together a package of draft picks to at least make Las Vegas consider it. There is no harm in picking up the phone.
Beane has an extra second-rounder acquired last year in the Stefon Diggs trade to Houston. He can start his offer with this year’s first- and second-round picks, plus a young player or two. Maybe the Raiders roll the dice on Kaiir Elam’s talent, or would be intrigued by young edge rusher Javon Solomon.
Let’s be real here: It’s not as if Beane is getting tremendous value out of the bottom of the first round. His last three top overall picks – wide receiver Keon Coleman (with the first pick of the second round last year), tight end Dalton Kincaid and Elam – were difference-makers for the wrong reasons against the Chiefs.
That’s the No. 1 reason trading picks for a proven player – in this case, Crosby – is a great idea this offseason. The last time Beane traded away his first-round pick for a player, he landed Diggs, who will go down as either the second- or third-best receiver in franchise history, depending on how you rank him with Eric Moulds behind Andre Reed.
That’s the type of impact Beane needs to find this offseason. That’s the type of impact Crosby can have on the Buffalo defense. Priority No. 1 this offseason has to be to build a defense that doesn’t crater in the biggest moments.
“One to two plays can change the outcome of a game, which ultimately changes the outcome of the season,” Beane said Thursday, speaking of the loss in the AFC championship game. “We wouldn’t be sitting here. So, it sucks. It hurts. But I’m not in the mood of thinking you have to blow it all up. I don’t think that’s rational.”
We’re in agreement there. Don’t blow it up, at all. Instead, add to what’s been built by finding the player who can make those one or two plays. Add to it by adding Maxx Crosby this offseason.
Maxx Crosby is a rising star in the NFL, and the Buffalo Bills would be wise to pursue a trade for the talented defensive end. Here are a few reasons why the Bills should make a strong case for acquiring Crosby:1. Pass Rush Ability: Crosby has proven to be a formidable pass rusher, recording 17 sacks in just two seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders. The Bills could greatly benefit from adding his pass-rushing prowess to their defense, especially as they aim to challenge top quarterbacks in the league.
2. Youth and Potential: At just 23 years old, Crosby has already shown immense potential and room for growth. His youth and athleticism make him an attractive option for the Bills, who are looking to build a strong foundation for the future.
3. Versatility: Crosby is not only effective as a pass rusher, but also as a run defender. His ability to disrupt both the pass and run game would provide valuable versatility to the Bills’ defense.
4. Team Player Mentality: Crosby is known for his strong work ethic and team-first mentality. His leadership qualities and dedication to the game would make him a valuable addition to the Bills’ locker room.
Overall, Maxx Crosby would be a valuable asset to the Buffalo Bills, bringing a combination of pass-rushing ability, youth, versatility, and a team-first mentality. The Bills should strongly consider making a case for trading for Crosby to bolster their defense and strengthen their chances of competing at a high level in the NFL.

FBI agents asked to answer survey on Jan. 6 case involvement
The FBI Agents Association (FBIAA) sent a message to its members on Sunday about the 12-question survey sent to some of its employees asking about their work related to investigating the violent attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
“We understand that this feels like agents and employees are being targeted, despite repeated assurances that ‘all FBI employees will be protected against political retribution,’” the message states. “Employees carrying out their duties to investigate allegations of criminal activity with integrity and within the rule of law should never be treated as those who have engaged in actual misconduct.”
The 12-question survey asks FBI employees to choose a response or responses that apply to each question by selecting from a menu of options provided in the survey.
One question in the survey permits an “other” response and provides a text box in which to respond. FBIAA is recommending responding agents include specific language in this text box indicating they are “required to respond” to the survey, they are responding to the best of their ability based on current knowledge “without being afforded appropriate time to research” answers or speak with counsel or representation and that they have not been advised of their rights in this matter.
Additionally, FBIAA recommends employees include language indicating that, “To the best of my ability and belief, I have performed my duties in accordance with the DIOG, federal statutes and the Constitution of the United States and the matters I worked on were properly predicated under DIOG and were opened and investigated at the direction of the Department of Justice.”
The FBIAA on its website describes its mission as advancing and safeguarding “the careers, economic interests, conditions of employment and welfare of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Agents and retired FBI Agents.”

The FBIAA message also notes that today marks the four-year anniversary of the line of duty deaths of two FBI Special Agents who were shot and killed while executing a search warrant in Florida.
“Adding insult to injury is that four years ago today, we lost two incredible FBI agents, Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger, doing the meaningful, yet dangerous work that our members do every day. We remember how dark and tragic that day was. Today, we continue to remember and honor them, their families, friends, and colleagues. While it is nearly impossible to block out the noise right now, we are reminded that like Dan and Laura, we do the jobs we do because it is a calling to protect and serve – and that we believe in protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution of the United States,” the message states.
The message closes with a sober, but measured tone about the uncertainty surrounding what these recent actions by the Trump Justice Department may mean for employees, stating, “We continue to hear rumors of dismissals/security revocations, or individuals who have been told to expect dismissals on Monday. Again, we have no confirmation of any such events. Please be cautious in sharing and spreading what could be misinformation. We do not need any more stress on those potentially impacted.”
On Friday, several sources told ABC New that the Trump administration is compiling a list of agents and other FBI officials from around the country who they believe should be fired or forced to resign in the coming days.
Firings were expected to begin as early as Friday, but a list was expected to be finalized on Monday, sources said.
The list of those who could be fired includes the heads of dozens of field offices across the country and could include scores of agents in the FBI’s Washington, D.C., Field Office alone, sources said.
An FBI spokesperson said in a statement to ABC News: “The FBI is declining to comment on any questions regarding FBI personnel matters. We have also instructed the public affairs officers in our field offices to decline to comment as well.”
The FBI is seeking feedback from its agents who were involved in the investigation of the January 6th Capitol riot. The agency recently sent out a survey to agents asking for their input on their level of involvement in the case, the resources and support they received, and any challenges they faced during the investigation. This survey is part of the FBI’s effort to gather information on the handling of the high-profile case and to identify areas for improvement in future investigations. The agency is committed to ensuring that all agents are properly supported and equipped to carry out their duties effectively and efficiently.
The FBI has not released any specific details about the survey or the responses it has received so far. However, this initiative demonstrates the agency’s dedication to learning from past experiences and continuously improving its investigative techniques.
Stay tuned for more updates on this story as more information becomes available.

IT outsourcing has become an essential strategy for many businesses looking to streamline their operations, reduce costs, and gain access to specialized expertise. However, the success of IT outsourcing projects can vary widely depending on the approach taken and the provider chosen. In this article, we will explore some real-life case studies of IT outsourcing, highlighting both successful and failed examples. One notable success story in IT outsourcing is that of Nike, the global sportswear giant. In the early 2000s, Nike faced challenges in managing its complex IT infrastructure and decided to outsource its IT operations to Accenture. The partnership proved to be highly successful, with Accenture helping Nike streamline its IT processes, improve efficiency, and reduce costs. As a result, Nike was able to focus on its core business activities and achieve significant growth in the years following the outsourcing arrangement.
Another successful example of IT outsourcing is that of Procter & Gamble. In the mid-2000s, the consumer goods company faced challenges in managing its IT infrastructure and decided to outsource its IT operations to IBM. The partnership proved to be highly successful, with IBM helping Procter & Gamble implement cutting-edge technologies, improve operational efficiency, and drive innovation. As a result, Procter & Gamble was able to achieve significant cost savings and gain a competitive edge in the market.
However, not all IT outsourcing projects end in success. One notable example of a failed IT outsourcing project is that of the Royal Bank of Scotland. In the early 2000s, the bank decided to outsource its IT operations to IBM in an effort to reduce costs and improve efficiency. However, the partnership quickly turned sour, with IBM failing to deliver on its promises and causing significant disruptions to the bank’s operations. As a result, the Royal Bank of Scotland was forced to terminate the outsourcing arrangement and bring its IT operations back in-house, resulting in substantial financial losses and damage to its reputation.
These case studies highlight the importance of careful planning and due diligence when embarking on an IT outsourcing project. Businesses must thoroughly evaluate potential providers, define clear objectives and expectations, and establish robust governance mechanisms to ensure the success of the outsourcing arrangement. By learning from both successful and failed examples of IT outsourcing, businesses can make informed decisions and maximize the benefits of outsourcing for their organization.
Case Studies: Successful Implementation of Service Level Agreements in Various Industries
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are a crucial component of any business relationship, outlining the expectations and responsibilities of both parties involved. By clearly defining the services to be provided, the quality standards to be met, and the consequences for failing to meet those standards, SLAs help ensure that both parties are on the same page and working towards the same goals. In various industries, successful implementation of SLAs has led to improved customer satisfaction, increased efficiency, and stronger partnerships between service providers and their clients. Let’s take a look at some case studies that highlight the successful implementation of SLAs in different industries:
1. IT Services Industry:
A leading IT services company implemented SLAs with their clients to outline the response times for resolving technical issues, the uptime guarantees for their systems, and the penalties for any service disruptions. By clearly defining these expectations upfront, the company was able to improve the efficiency of their operations, reduce downtime, and increase customer satisfaction. As a result, their client retention rates improved, and they were able to expand their customer base through positive referrals.
2. Healthcare Industry:
A large hospital system implemented SLAs with their vendors to ensure timely delivery of medical supplies, maintenance of critical equipment, and compliance with regulatory requirements. By setting clear expectations and holding vendors accountable for meeting those expectations, the hospital system was able to streamline their procurement processes, reduce costs, and improve patient care outcomes. The SLAs also helped foster a strong partnership between the hospital system and their vendors, leading to better communication and collaboration.
3. Financial Services Industry:
A major financial institution implemented SLAs with their third-party service providers to ensure the security and confidentiality of customer data, compliance with industry regulations, and timely resolution of any issues. By establishing these SLAs, the financial institution was able to mitigate risks, protect their customers’ sensitive information, and maintain a high level of trust with their clients. The SLAs also helped the institution demonstrate their commitment to compliance and security to regulators and investors.
In conclusion, the successful implementation of SLAs in various industries has proven to be a valuable tool for improving efficiency, managing risks, and enhancing customer satisfaction. By setting clear expectations, measuring performance against those expectations, and holding parties accountable for meeting their obligations, businesses can build stronger partnerships, drive operational excellence, and achieve their strategic goals. Whether in IT services, healthcare, financial services, or any other industry, SLAs play a critical role in ensuring the success of business relationships.
