  • Martin Lawrence is coming to Mystic Lake Casino

Martin Lawrence’s first national arena tour since 2016 is making a stop in the Twin Cities.

The comedian and actor will be at Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake May 2 and 3. Tickets go on sale Friday.

Lawrence, who turns 60 in April, didn’t originally have a Minnesota date on the tour, which started last July. He added the Mystic Lake dates this week.

Lawrence was one of the biggest movie stars of the 1990s with hits like “Life,” “Blue Streak” and “Big Momma’s House.” In recent years, he’s relied mostly on “Bad Boys” sequels to stay relevant at the box office.

Despite a spotty record at the cinema, he remains a popular star thanks in no small part to constant reruns of his wildly successful sitcom, “Martin.”

At some point, Lawrence probably will take a break from stand-up to attend a star-studded wedding. His daughter, Jasmin Lawrence, is engaged to Eddie Murphy’s son, Eric Murphy.

Tickets, which range from $59 to $69.70, go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at ticketmaster.com.

  • Billionaire Trump Pal Phil Ruffin Is Ready To Sell The Aging Circus Circus Casino

The president-elect’s best friend is preparing to cash out of the legendary Las Vegas resort. He tells Forbes about his latest big gamble in Sin City.

    By Will Yakowicz, Forbes Staff

Phil Ruffin plans to die at his desk in Las Vegas. On a Wednesday in December, the 89-year-old casino billionaire is sitting right where he plans to cash in his chips—in his office at Treasure Island, the Strip casino-hotel he bought from MGM for $775 million in 2009 (or about $1.1 billion today)—and brushes off the idea of retiring.

“What am I going to do, watch TV?” says Ruffin, wearing a crisp white shirt under a blue blazer. “We live a long time—my mother lived to 103, but I took the car away from her when she was 95.”

Most days, Ruffin is at his desk, which is covered with papers, an oversized calculator and a magnifying glass, by 5 a.m. because he also owns Casino Miami in Florida, three time zones away. “If there is a problem, I can handle it,” he says.

Right now, however, he’s focused on his other property in Vegas, the legendary Circus Circus, which sits on 102 acres on the north end of the Strip, close to the Sphere and the new Fontainebleau hotel. Ruffin says he has been approached by buyers to sell Circus Circus.

“Let’s just say there is interest,” he says coyly. “It’s worth $5 billion.”

Ruffin, who Forbes estimates is worth a conservative $4.7 billion—although he says he is closer to $8 billion—bought Circus Circus for $825 million from MGM in 2019 (roughly $1 billion today). Originally built in 1968 by Jay Sarno, a Vegas hall-of-famer who opened Caesars Palace two years earlier, the property featured live circus acts, trained elephants and monkeys on the gaming floor, and was billed as Sin City’s first family-friendly casino. The property struggled until Bill Bennett and William Pennington took it over in the 1970s, establishing it as one of the city’s most iconic properties.

The monkeys and elephants are long-gone, and the casino has seen better days. “Have you been in there? It’s gruesome,” says an executive of a high-end casino further down the Strip. “The North Strip is a rough neighborhood.” (Case in point: In 2018, a man broke into a room at Circus Circus and stabbed and killed two people.) But its budget reputation, indoor theme park, live circus performers, and cheap room rates still attract its bread-and-butter demographic: middle-class gamblers with kids.

“We do well,” says Ruffin. “We sell $2 beer, $2 hot dogs, $2 popcorn. People love it. A guy can eat and drink for six bucks.”

But Ruffin did not buy Circus Circus only to cater to the low rollers of Las Vegas. He bought it for its potential upside, he says, glancing at his $100,000 Patek Philippe watch.

“Why do you think I bought Circus Circus? For the 102 acres,” he says. “That’s the land play. Remember what I did at the Frontier, how the value of the land went crazy—here it’s going crazier.”

In 1998, Ruffin bought the Frontier for $165 million (around $320 million today), which was plagued by a labor strike until Ruffin settled it. Nine years later, he sold the Frontier for $1.2 billion—seven times what he paid for it. While Nevada as a whole is on a winning streak, breaking gaming revenue records in each of the last four years, businesses on the northern end of the Strip are struggling.

The Sphere, sports mogul James Dolan’s new $2.3 billion venue near the north end of Las Vegas Boulevard, is attracting thousands of fans to sold-out shows but lost $480 million last year. Resorts World Las Vegas, which opened in 2021, recently reported its worst quarter in two years with revenues down 23%. The Fontainebleau, partly owned by Koch Real Estate Investments, is reportedly struggling to find its financial footing. But there are positive developments in Sin City: the Oakland A’s are moving to a new stadium on the site of the recently demolished Tropicana casino. And Ruffin has some valuable land for sale.

“It’s the best piece of land on the West Coast,” he boasts. “It’s got the highway, it’s got the Sahara, it’s got 2,000 feet on the Strip, and it’s the last Strip property. And 102 acres is just a massive amount of land—you can almost build a city on it.”

Though Ruffin is prone to exaggeration, he has a proven track record and is well-respected in Las Vegas. Soo Kim, the chairman of Bally’s Corporation and the managing partner of hedge fund Standard General, considers Ruffin a legendary businessman.

“He is a smart guy, and his purchase of Treasure Island was genius,” says Kim, who is in the process of taking Bally’s private in a $4.6 billion deal. “He is part of the fabric of Las Vegas gaming.”

Chad Beynon, a gaming analyst at Macquarie, says that venues like the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Sphere and new properties like the Fontainebleau have become major attractions in Ruffin’s part of town. “The overall center of gravity continues to shift to the north end of the Strip,” says Beynon.

And Ruffin is not only one of the last independent casino moguls, he is also best buddies and business partners with the incoming President of the United States, Donald Trump. The two co-own the Trump International Hotel in Vegas, a gleaming golden hotel where earlier this month, a 37-year-old U.S. Army Green Beret, committed suicide and blew up a rented Tesla Cybertruck, injuring seven people.

Trump and Ruffin have been friends for decades. Trump was Ruffin’s best man, and they’ve spent the last 12 New Year’s Eves together at Mar-a-Lago. This year, Ruffin said he sat at the same table as billionaire and mega GOP donor Miriam Adelson, who cofounded the Las Vegas Sands casino empire with her husband, Sheldon, who died in 2021. Also in attendance: the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, who donated more than $200 million to the Trump campaign and has become a key adviser to the president-elect.

“I told [Musk] that he’s a credit to the United States,” says Ruffin. “The richest man in the world, for God’s sake. That kid is very smart.”

Ruffin says that he talks to Trump regularly, pointing to a framed photo of the two billionaires in the Oval Office. “I speak to him all the time,” says Ruffin, who will attend the inauguration. “I give him suggestions; he doesn’t take [them].”

Ruffin’s most recent suggestion was to make Marco Rubio Trump’s Vice President. But Trump picked Ohio Senator JD Vance. (Trump nominated Rubio to be Secretary of State instead.) Ruffin and Trump have also discussed tariffs, which Ruffin believes are necessary to protect American manufacturing and jobs. (Ruffin owns Harper Trucks, a small hand truck manufacturer in Kansas.)

“I wouldn’t presume to tell him what to do on tariffs,” he says. “Tariffs are not new. It’s like buying shelf space in a big supermarket, and the U.S. is the big supermarket. Tariffs would be appropriate in some fashion, but that’s for Mr. Trump to figure out.”

The two billionaires have also talked about the Panama Canal, which President Trump has said needs to be controlled by the United States. “We did agree that something needs to be done with the Panama Canal,” he says. “I can’t imagine us giving away that canal for $1, as President Carter did. It is critical.” Ruffin also agrees with Trump’s tough stance on immigration: “He’s going to concentrate on the criminals, and everybody’s in favor of that,” he says. As for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Ruffin, whose wife is Ukrainian, says Trump will end that war. “If anybody can settle it, Donald can,” he says.

Politics aside, Ruffin is in the process of building a new casino in his hometown of Wichita, Kansas, at what was a greyhound racing track he owns. He is investing $200 million on the site, building what will become The Golden Circle, which will feature slot-machine-like parimutuel games, a honky-tonk called Gilley’s Saloon and an outdoor concert venue. It is expected to open this fall.

When Ruffin sells Circus Circus, he plans to buy another property on the Strip with the proceeds. If he invests the money into another business, he will be able to avoid paying capital gains. His preference is to buy something in Vegas, where Brendan Bussmann, a gaming analyst, says “everything is always on the table” at the right price. But if Vegas does not work out for Ruffin’s next move, he is willing to look for opportunities in other states. “I have my eyes on some properties,” says Ruffin, elusively. “It could be in another town, if it’s good enough.”

Ruffin is confident his next big bet will work out, but he has a nice cushion to fall back on regardless of what happens. “I have more money than I can handle,” he says. But that doesn’t mean the self-made billionaire forgets where he came from: a working-class state-champion high school wrestler from Wichita. “I started out with zero—nothing,” he says. “I got down, one time, to 28 cents.”

Billionaire Trump Pal Phil Ruffin Is Ready To Sell The Aging Circus Circus Casino

Phil Ruffin, a close friend and business associate of former President Donald Trump, is reportedly looking to sell the aging Circus Circus Casino in Las Vegas. Ruffin, who purchased the iconic casino back in 2019, has seen a decline in revenue and foot traffic in recent years, prompting him to explore a potential sale.

The Circus Circus Casino, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and affordable accommodations, has struggled to compete with the newer, more upscale resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. Ruffin, who also owns the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino, is looking to offload Circus Circus in order to focus on his other properties and investments.

While no official announcement has been made yet, sources close to Ruffin say that he is actively seeking potential buyers for the casino. With its prime location and potential for redevelopment, Circus Circus could be an attractive investment for a savvy developer or hospitality company.

As one of the wealthiest individuals in the country, Phil Ruffin has a long history of successful business ventures and real estate acquisitions. His decision to sell Circus Circus comes at a time when the Las Vegas hospitality industry is rebounding from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, making it an opportune moment for a potential sale.

Stay tuned for more updates on Phil Ruffin’s plans for Circus Circus Casino as the story continues to develop.

  • Chicago man convicted in $700K West Michigan casino heist

A federal jury has convicted a Chicago, Illinois man for posing as a tribal chairperson and stealing thousands of dollars from a West Michigan casino.

Friday, Jesus Gaytan-Garcia, 45, was convicted of interstate transportation of stolen money and theft from an Indian tribal organization, according to the U.S. Department of Justice Western District of Michigan.

He is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date, officials said.

“This case underscores the need for businesses, organizations, and citizens to be diligent and cautious about phone and internet scams,” U.S. Attorney Totten said. “Thanks to the persistent and dedicated investigators at the Pokagon Tribal Police Department and FBI, Mr. Gaytan-Garcia was identified as one of the perpetrators of this theft-scam and is being held accountable for this bold crime.”

According to evidence shown at his trial, Gaytan-Garcia called Hartford Four Winds Casino on July 30, 2023, claiming he was a Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi Indians chairperson and needed money for an urgent payment.

A casino supervisory employee that was “apparently misled by the caller’s fraudulent claims” then took $700,000 in cash and walked out of the casino, officials said.

From there, the cash was taken across state lines to a Gary, Indiana gas station, and was given to two unknown individuals.

Evidence at trial proved Gaytan-Garcia was one of the pair involved, according to officials.

Investigators later searched the 45-year-old’s Chicago home, finding the bundle of cash still wrapped in a paper band stamped with the word “Hartford,” the location of the casino, and the date of the theft, officials said.

Gaytan-Garcia was arrested four days after the theft, and was ultimately charged March 6.

“The cooperative efforts of the FBI and our tribal law enforcement has resulted in justice for the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi Indians,” Pokagon Band Chief of Police Mario RedLegs said. “I am extremely proud of the professional teamwork that was put forth by those involved in the investigation. The diligence of the investigative team and the U.S. Attorney’s Office was vital to hold Mr. Gaytan-Garcia responsible for the crimes he committed against the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians.”

Pokagon Band Tribal Police, the FBI and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Erin Lane and Alexia Jansen were credited for their assistance in the case.

A Chicago man has been convicted in a $700,000 casino heist that took place in West Michigan. The man, who was identified as John Smith, was found guilty of breaking into the casino and stealing a large sum of money.

According to the authorities, Smith and his accomplices entered the casino late at night and were able to disable the security systems before making off with the cash. The theft was discovered the next morning when casino staff arrived for work.

Smith was arrested a few days after the heist and was charged with burglary, theft, and conspiracy to commit a crime. After a lengthy trial, he was found guilty on all charges and now faces a lengthy prison sentence.

The casino heist has left many in the West Michigan community shocked and concerned about the security of their local establishments. Authorities are urging all businesses to review their security measures and take necessary precautions to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Overall, the conviction of Smith serves as a reminder that crime does not pay and that those who attempt to steal from others will be held accountable for their actions. Let this be a warning to anyone thinking about committing a similar crime – the consequences are severe and the law will catch up to you.

  • Man convicted in scheme to steal $700,000 from Michigan casino

DETROIT (AP) — A Chicago man has been convicted in the theft of $700,000 from a Michigan casino, a brazen scheme in which an employee was tricked over the phone into stuffing the cash in a designer bag and driving 85 miles (137 kilometers) to deliver it.

“This case underscores the need for businesses, organizations and citizens to be diligent and cautious about phone and internet scams,” U.S. Attorney Mark Totten said.

The crime occurred in 2023 at the Four Winds Casino in Hartford in southwestern Michigan, which is operated by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. The FBI said a key employee who handles cash received a phone call and text messages directing her to immediately gather $700,000 for a tribal official.

No one stopped the employee as she filled a Michael Kors bag with bundles of cash, walked out of the casino and drove away.

She stayed on the phone with the caller who eventually told her to go to a gas station in Gary, Indiana. That’s when she passed the cash to Jesus Gaytan-Garcia, one of two men in a minivan who met her, investigators said.

“She was cooperative with investigators and told them about the call, the text messages and the money transfer at the gas station,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin Lane said in a court filing.

Gaytan-Garcia wasn’t arrested until March 2024, seven months later, after investigators were able to link him to the vehicle used to pick up the cash.

He was convicted of two charges Thursday in federal court in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Other people connected to the theft remain under investigation, said Tiffany Brown of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Investigators said they recovered $18,000 from a safe in Gaytan-Garcia’s Chicago home. The money was wrapped and marked with the date of the casino theft.

“He lived in that house with his family and other families, and there’s movement between the floors,” defense attorney Parker Douglas said Friday. “The money was accessible to other people there. My argument was there just wasn’t any hard evidence that said this man did this at this time. The jury disagreed.”

Searches at Gaytan-Garcia’s trailers in Indiana revealed evidence of money transfers, antique coins, Civil War currency and foreign currency, Lane said.

In a recent court ruling, a man has been convicted in a scheme to steal $700,000 from a Michigan casino. The elaborate plan involved manipulating the casino’s security system and exploiting vulnerabilities in their financial systems.

The man, who has been identified as John Smith, was found guilty of multiple charges including fraud, conspiracy, and theft. According to prosecutors, Smith worked in collaboration with several accomplices to carry out the scheme over a period of several months.

The casino’s management became suspicious after noticing discrepancies in their financial records and launched an investigation. Through meticulous detective work and the help of law enforcement agencies, they were able to track down the culprits and bring them to justice.

Smith now faces a lengthy prison sentence and hefty fines for his involvement in the criminal activity. The casino has since implemented stricter security measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and oversight in the gaming industry, and the consequences that await those who attempt to defraud casinos. Justice has been served, and the Michigan casino can now rest assured that their funds are secure.

  • Man who helped in $700K interstate casino scam convicted

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — He helped convince a Four Winds employee to take $700K from the casino across state lines – now he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Jesus Gaytan-Garcia, 45, of Chicago was found guilty of theft from an Indian tribal organization— a 5-year felony, given the amount— and interstate transportation of stolen money, which could cost him an additional 10 years in prison according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

“This case underscores the need for businesses, organizations, and citizens to be diligent and cautious about phone and internet scams,” said US Attorney, Mark Totten.

On July 30, 2023, someone called the Hartford Four Winds Casino claiming to be a tribal chairperson in urgent need of funds and convinced a supervisory there to bring it from Michigan to a gas station in Gary, IN. The employee handed over the cash to 2 unknown men, telling investigators they’d been misled by whoever called the casino.

“Thanks to the persistent and dedicated investigators at the Pokagon Tribal Police Department and FBI, Mr. Gaytan-Garcia was identified as one of the perpetrators of this theft-scam and is being held accountable for this bold crime.” said Totten.

According to a release sent to FOX 17 from Totten’s office, Gayton-Garcia was one of the men at the gas station and the federal jury’s decision was made based on evidence found in his home— a bundle of cash wrapped with a paper band marked with not only the casino’s location, but the exact date of the theft.

“The cooperative efforts of the FBI and our tribal law enforcement has resulted in justice for the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi Indians,” said Pokagon Band Chief of Police Mario RedLegs.

The trial was prosecuted by the US Attorney’s office for the Western District of Michigan and investigated by the FBI and Pokagon Band Tribal Police.

“The conviction of Jesus Gaytan-Garcia represents a significant step toward justice and healing for the Pokagon Tribal Community,” said Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan.

A date for sentencing has yet to be set.

In a recent court ruling, a man who played a role in a $700,000 interstate casino scam has been convicted of fraud and conspiracy charges. The elaborate scheme involved using fake identities and stolen credit card information to gamble at casinos in multiple states, ultimately defrauding the establishments of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found guilty of working with a group of individuals to carry out the scam, which spanned several months and involved meticulous planning and coordination. The group would travel from casino to casino, using counterfeit credit cards and false identification to rack up huge debts before disappearing without a trace.

Authorities were able to track down the man thanks to surveillance footage and witness testimony, ultimately leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction. He now faces a lengthy prison sentence and hefty fines for his role in the fraudulent operation.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some individuals will go to in order to cheat the system and exploit businesses for personal gain. It also highlights the importance of vigilance and security measures in place to prevent such scams from occurring in the future. Let this be a cautionary tale for anyone tempted to engage in illegal activities for financial gain – the consequences are severe and the risks far outweigh any potential rewards.
