Ovechkin tours Oilers Hall of Fame, focused on catching Gretzky
The chase has been enjoyable for Ovechkin this season with Washington (32-10-5) leading the NHL with 69 points. The game in Edmonton is the first of a five-game road trip.

“Of course, it’s fun when you’re winning and your team is playing well,” Ovechkin said. “It kind of helps you up.”

Ovechkin missed 16 games after he fractured his left fibula at the Utah Hockey Club on Nov. 18. Since returning, he has eight points (six goals, two assists) in 13 games.

“It’s a gift from God,” Oilers forward Vasily Podkolzin said. “He can score, he can rip it and no matter how old he is, he’s still moving well. It’s great to have an opportunity to play against him.”

Podkolzin, like Ovechkin a native of Moscow, idolized him growing up and remembers fondly the first time he played against him.

“I was around 5 years old when he got into the League,” he said. “I’ve played against him two or three times. He’s even bigger on the ice with skates. It was pretty nice to meet him. We had a little conversation. He’s a good guy and one of the greatest players.”

Ovechkin’s ability to continue scoring at a high rate at this stage of his career is impressive, though he does not have a target of how many goals he would like to have at the end of it.

For now, the focus is on catching Gretzky.

“I’m 20, 21 goals (away), it’s hard to score in this league,” Ovechkin said. “You play against the best defensive players out there and maybe in one game, you maybe have two or three chances, and you have to use it, or maybe one chance. All five guys out there have to do the job.”

Atlanta signs catching depth, former prospect’s new team, IFA signings
The Atlanta Braves continue to make moves on the margins as they build depth for the 2025 season. Yes, fans are rightfully frustrated as the winter comes to a close and more than a few glaring holes remain on the roster. It doesn’t make things better when the Dodgers continue to sign any elite player available and progress toward constructing the Death Star of a MLB roster.

Regardless, the Braves need to make these moves so that they can withstand the grind of a 162 game season. Fans saw firsthand how injuries can quickly derail a season last year. With that in mind Anthopoulos has brought in another option to fill the backup catcher role Travis d’Arnaud so excellently did in 2024.

Braves sign veteran catcher Curt Casali to minor league deal

Atlanta has reportedly agreed on a minor league deal for 11 year veteran backstop Curt Casali. Last season Casali served as the backup catcher for San Francisco. In 41 games with the Giants he slashed .194/.293/.250 with just one home run and eight RBI. Casali’s defense also took a dive in his age 35 season as he ranked in the 20th percentile or worse in pop time, blocks above average, and caught stealing above average.

It’s still likely the Braves favor other options for the backup catcher role, but with a good spring training Casali can at least throw his name in the mix with Tromp and co.

Former Braves top prospect Sean Newcomb signs deal with Boston

In the news surrounding former Braves, Sean Newcomb has found a new home in Boston. The former top Braves prospect agreed to a minor league deal with the Red Sox yesterday morning. Newcomb hasn’t pitched more than 30 innings in a season in the Majors since his 2021 season with Atlanta.

Yesterday, David O’Brien of the Athletic reported the signing of five pitchers all of which come from Venezuela. Luisberth Valdez, Wuillinger Tovar, Diego Areinamo, Jacksel Labastida, Jesus Cova are the reported five names being inserted into the 2025 IFA class.

Catching Up with Hyatt, Latin America and Caribbean’s Shyla Gardner
It’s no secret that all-inclusive resorts are having a huge moment, and no company is capitalizing on it more than World of Hyatt.

The Hyatt Inclusive Collection (HIC) has grown to its sweet spot of 10 brands, from staples like Secrets to newcomers like Hyatt Vivid, which debuted in Cancun in April 2024.

Shyla Gardner, Hyatt’s vice president of commercial services for Latin America and the Caribbean, is at the helm in the destinations where most of these properties reside. TMR spoke with Gardner about the hottest destinations, finding the right resort clients, and new advisor programs.

The Hottest New All-Inclusive Destinations

HIC has seen big buzz around its growth Europe with resorts such as Dreams Madeira Resort, Spa & Marina in Portugal, which opened in October 2024. Still, HIC’s roots and bulk of its continued expansion are in the tropical countries North Americans have come to know and love.

In April 2024, Hyatt opened Dreams Estrella del Mar in Mazatlán, a city on the western coast of Mexico that is fairly new to travelers.

“It is a really neat offering in a sense where it’s a new destination where we are the luxury, highest end product in the destination,” Gardner said. “It’s a family friendly offering so there’s something for everyone there.”

Most anticipated for 2025 are new Secrets resorts in Aruba and St. Lucia – Secrets Baby Beach Aruba and Secrets St. Lucia Resort & Spa.

Also, there are neighboring resorts opening in the up-and-coming destination of Miches in the Dominican Republic: Dreams Playa Esmeralda and Secrets Playa Esmerelda. The complex will offer about 1,000 rooms combined and is slated to open in April.

“Think Tulum or Playa Mita when maybe 10 years ago, it’s untouched, virgin beaches. I just drove [to Miches] a week ago and it literally feels like you’re in Jurassic Park. It’s just this incredible mountainous jungle that you’re driving through. The road is very nice, so it’s a good drive, but it just has this really nature forward feel,” Gardner said.

“Within that destination there’s other developments all happening so within a very short period of time, we see Miches as a destination and Playa Esmerelda being probably the next big hotspot in the Dominican Republic,” she added.

To add to all of that, Gardner expressed excitement about welcoming 21 Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts to HIC. Hyatt just finalized a long-term agreement with the Spain-based company, whose resorts in Dominican Republic, Mexico, Jamaica, and Spain are now part of the collection.

A New Generation of Resort Clients

Predictable pricing, exceptional food and beverage, and a relaxed environment are all main reasons why people love all-inclusives. Hyatt continues to open new resorts to give their longtime guests something new yet familiar.

Catering to the new generation has become a key focus for HIC, as seen in the launch of its Hyatt Vivid brand. This way, all-inclusive clients are easier to come by because there is more to offer them in terms of dining, entertainment, and experiences that keep up with the trends. This can look like having a creative mocktail menu; authentic, high-quality grab-and-go bites; and seamless technology, all big hits with the newer generation.

“If you are maybe a first time all-inclusive traveler and you’re just wanting to dip your toe in and looking for something a little more approachable on a budget, we have great brand offerings like our Sunscape brand, and then also within the Gen Z space is the new [Hyatt Vivid Grand Island in Cancun], which is a very good, accessible price point,” Gardner said.

“We’re always being thoughtful, and that’s really one of the reasons why Vivid came to exist,” she added. “Rather than going for the exact same audience over and over again, how do we look for different niches and different audiences that we can design product for?”

Today’s travelers also value authentic experiences within a destination, and resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico need to rise to the occasion on that. Gardner again pointed to culinary creativity as a way that the resorts fulfill this for guests.

At Secrets Moxché Playa del Carmen, guests enjoy the Omakase taco tasting experience, where they are served seven tacos from different regions of Mexico, which Gardner calls “a diverse culinary experience in a way that maybe you wouldn’t expect in an all-inclusive.”

“We want to share those best practices, but we don’t want to just copy-paste them because then it’s not authentic to each destination,” Gardner said. “So, it’s like, how can this one get excited about an idea and then that inspires a different resort to think of something new and fresh and just keep that energy of innovation moving throughout the portfolio?”

What’s on the Horizon for Travel Advisors

Going into 2025, Gardner wants travel advisors to look out for an upcoming announcement regarding HIC’s weddings and social groups programming.

“Our travel advisor partnerships are hugely important to us,” she said. “I know [weddings and social groups] is a very important segment of business for the travel advisors and something we’re always looking to grow.”

“We’re looking for ways on that side to improve our technology, to help them with how they see their rooming list, to help with the speed of our commission payments, which is always very important for them,” she added.

Until then, joining HIC’s Confidant Collective is the best way for travel advisors to get all the tools they need to sell Hyatt’s all-inclusive resorts. It includes the educational platform Confidant Learning, which aims to make advisors experts in the product. The program also Confidant Rewards for advisors to earn benefits for their bookings.

“Even if they book through a third-party tour operator, they’re able to register those bookings, and as a token of our appreciation for their loyalty and their recommendations, they’re able to earn rewards and points that they can convert for stays and other incentives within our organization,” Gardner said.

Hyatt’s invitation-only Hyatt Privé is another travel advisor program that gives eligible sellers access to exclusive benefits for themselves and their clients.

Chicago Med Is Catching Up To Chicago Fire In NBC’s Ratings, And I Totally Get It After The Fall Finales

The future is bright for fans of NBC’s One Chicago universe, with the shows not only returning for their winter premieres early in the 2025 TV schedule but also just weeks away from the first three-part crossover event since way back in 2019. So, it’s fitting that details have emerged about the ratings and audience sizes for Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med for the first part of the 2024-2025 TV season, but the numbers aren’t entirely what I was expecting. The medical drama is catching up to Chicago Fire!

I totally get it after the events of the fall finales of both shows and even Chicago P.D., but let’s dig into the ratings information first.

How One Chicago Shows Compared In Ratings This Season So far

One element of the ratings and audience numbers courtesy of TVLine that isn’t surprising is that the three shows of One Chicago rank first, second, and third for NBC’s scripted programming in fall 2024. In fact, only one metric falls below a scripted show set elsewhere than the Windy City, and that’s Law & Order: SVU edging out Chicago Med in the 18-49 age demographic rating.

Unsurprisingly, One Chicago’s shows are all within 1 million total viewers and 0.04 rating of each other on average after seven days so far this season. Fire is winning as usual with an audience of 7.8 million and demo rating of 0.61, Med comes in second in viewership with 7.4 million but third in demo rating with 0.57. P.D. is third in audience size with 6.9 million but second in rating with 0.60.

And if all of this just seems like a lot of numbers, here’s the kicker: the difference between Fire‘s 7.8 million and Med‘s 7.4 million is the smallest gap between the two shows in four seasons. Yes, Chicago Med is catching up to Chicago Fire, and I think I know why.

Chicago Med Season 10 Has Been Fantastic (With A Killer Fall Finale)

Chicago Med entered a new era in the fall with Season 10 bringing in new showrunner Allen MacDonald to replace former bosses Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider. MacDonald watched the series from the very beginning to prepare to take over, and star Steven Weber praised how things are “getting gritty” with “more personal stories.” In fact, as if he’d already known the end-of-year ratings data when we spoke ahead of the fall finale, Weber said:

Allen and [producer] Anna [Decosa] are raising the bar, and the audience is coming there, as evidenced by our ratings. People are really digging the show and coming to it and looking forward to it, not just as comfort, but they’re excited by it. That’s a function of our new writers.

I’d also argue that Med had the strongest fall finale of the entire One Chicago world, and Med is historically not usually my favorite for premieres or finales. Even if I’m fairly confident that 2025 isn’t going to begin with the drama killing off S. Epatha Merkerson’s character, the cliffhanger with Goodwin’s life in the balance was pretty masterful and set a high bar for the rest of the fall finales back in November. (All three fall finales are available streaming with a Peacock subscription now.)

And sure, Med has always had an advantage due to the 8 p.m. ET time slot that is still early enough for many folks to still want to watch TV, but I think the increase in stakes and new kinds of storytelling both contribute to Med‘s boost in the fall of 2024.

Chicago Fire Has Been Average

Chicago Fire has been totally fine in Season 13. I haven’t missed an episode, and the founding One Chicago drama is still on top in both ratings metrics. The show doesn’t seem to be in any trouble that Med is catching up. That said, this season hasn’t been the most thrilling of the series to date, and the major cast departures of recent seasons – Jesse Spencer, Kara Killmer, and Eamonn Walker in particular – really started to be felt in the fall.

Fortunately, Severide is back full time despite missing the last episode of 2024, the good ship Stellaride has been staying afloat despite some bumps, and Dermot Mulroney’s Chief Pascal has been an intriguing addition. Plus, as a longtime viewer, I was excited by how the fall finale brought none other than Cruz’s brother Leon back for the first time in years to set up a storyline that could be a real blast to the past in 2025.

Still, Fire struck me as One Chicago’s weakest fall finale of 2024, since it didn’t quite have the kind of cliffhanger that Med did or the sky-high stakes that P.D. did. And speaking of Chicago P.D.…

An Honorable Mention For Chicago P.D.

Chicago P.D.‘s premieres and finales are usually my favorites of One Chicago, and I always want to defend the cop drama when it comes to ratings and viewership due to its late time slot. 10 p.m. ET shows generally attract smaller audiences. P.D. is averaging second place among NBC’s scripted shows in the ratings and third behind Med for viewership, which isn’t too shabby, and the fall finale was solid back in November with Reid drawing a line in the sand for Voight.

It is worth noting that the viewership is down 11% from last season, including a dip of 2% when it comes to retention of Chicago Fire‘s 9 p.m. ET audience. Timing suggests that it could be due to the show losing Tracy Spiridakos as Detective Hailey Upton, but given that Chicago Fire‘s viewership dropped by 8%, it might just be a trend of the fall on NBC. As the network’s #4 show, SVU dropped by 18% in its first season after Law & Order: Organized Crime left Thursday nights.

Fortunately, fans don’t have to wait long into the new year to see what’s next for the three shows and whether I’ll have to eat my words about Chicago Fire having an average season so far. NBC’s One Chicago winter premieres air on Wednesday, January 8. As for the first three-show crossover since the “Infection” event of 2019, you can mark your calendars for January 29, although the order is switching up a bit. Instead of Med airing at 8 p.m. ET, Fire at 9 p.m. ET, and P.D. at 10 p.m. ET as usual, Med and Fire will swap time slots for the crossover.
