If you’ve listened to any of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s public appearances, you may have noticed a quiver in his voice when he speaks.
That’s the result of a rare neurological condition known as spasmodic dysphonia, which has afflicted Kennedy for decades.
“I have a tremble in my voice … particularly when I first start talking,” Kennedy said in an interview on The Diane Rehm Show in 2004. (Rehm also has spasmodic dysphonia.)
Kennedy said that, earlier in his career, he would receive letters and emails from people who saw him on TV or heard him on the radio, and that three or four of those people suggested he might have spasmodic dysphonia. He later got an official diagnosis.
According to Dysphonia International, spasmodic dysphonia is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary spasms in the muscles that open and close a person’s vocal cords, resulting in a “voice that presents with breaks and strained/strangled quality or breathy quality.”
An estimated 50,000 people in North America are believed to have spasmodic dysphonia, the group says, and affects more women than men. The cause of the condition is unknown.
An injection of botulinum toxin — or Botox — into a sufferer’s vocal chords is one of the most common treatments for the disorder. Kennedy told The Diane Rehm Show in 2005 that he was receiving shots about every four months.
On Wednesday, Kennedy is scheduled to appear before the Senate Finance Committee in the first of two hearings on his nomination to become the new secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
He told the Los Angeles Times in an interview last year that he “can’t stand” the sound of his voice now and that he feels “sorry” for people who hear him speak.
“My voice doesn’t really get tired. It just sounds terrible. But the injury is neurological, so actually the more I use the voice the stronger it tends to get.” Kennedy said.
He added: “If I could sound better, I would.”
RFK Jr.’s voice has been a topic of discussion for many, with some speculating on the cause of his unique speaking pattern. In a recent interview with NPR, Kennedy explained that his voice is actually a result of a condition called spasmodic dysphonia.Spasmodic dysphonia is a neurological disorder that affects the muscles in the larynx, causing involuntary spasms that can result in a strained or shaky voice. Kennedy shared that he has been living with this condition for over 35 years, and while it can be frustrating at times, he has learned to accept and even embrace it.
Despite the challenges of living with spasmodic dysphonia, Kennedy continues to be a vocal advocate for various causes, using his platform to raise awareness and promote positive change. His candid discussion about his condition serves as a reminder that everyone has their own struggles, but it is possible to overcome them with resilience and determination.

The Central Intelligence Agency on Saturday said it has shifted its previous assessments and has concluded that it’s likely the Covid-19 virus was leaked from a Chinese lab before it became a global pandemic but added that the agency had “low confidence” in its judgment.
“CIA assesses with low confidence that a research-related origin of the COVID-19 pandemic is more likely than a natural origin based on the available body of reporting,” a CIA spokesperson said in a statement. “CIA continues to assess that both research-related and natural origin scenarios of the COVID-19 pandemic remain plausible.”
The spokesperson added that the agency has “low confidence in this judgement” and will continue to evaluate any new intelligence reporting or relevant information.
For years, the CIA has said it was unclear whether the Covid pandemic emerged from human exposure to an infected animal or from an event at a research lab in China.
U.S. intelligence agencies and other government departments have been divided over the origins of the virus. The FBI and the Energy Department have said it was likely the virus was the result of a lab leak, while other agencies assessed that natural human exposure to an infected animal was the most likely scenario. The CIA had been agnostic until now.
The CIA’s assessment was not based on new intelligence but on analysts reviewing existing information, a source familiar with the matter told NBC News. The review was ordered in the closing weeks of the Biden administration and completed before President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the source said.
Outgoing CIA Director William Burns had told analysts that instead of remaining neutral on the different theories about Covid’s origins, they should take a position — though he did not express a preference for which theory to support, the source said.
The New York Times first reported on the circumstances of the new review.
The new director of the spy agency, John Ratcliffe, who was nominated by President Donald Trump and confirmed to his post by the Senate this week, approved the declassification of the new assessment, the source said. Ratcliffe has long argued that the virus most likely emerged from a leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
John Ratcliffe appears for a Senate Intelligence confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill on Jan. 15.Andrew Harnik / Getty Images Ratcliffe told Breitbart News in an interview posted Friday that he wanted the CIA to drop its neutral stance as to the origins of the virus and “get off the sidelines.”
“One of the things that I’ve talked about a lot is addressing the threat from China on a number of fronts, and that goes back to why a million Americans died and why the Central Intelligence Agency has been sitting on the sidelines for five years in not making an assessment about the origins of COVID,” Ratcliffe said. “That’s a day-one thing for me.”
“I’ve been on record, as you know, in saying I think our intelligence, our science, and our common sense all really dictates that the origins of COVID was a leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” he said. “But the CIA has not made that assessment or at least not made that assessment publicly. So I’m going to focus on that and look at the intelligence and make sure that the public is aware that the agency is going to get off the sidelines.”
Ratcliffe, who served as director of national intelligence during Trump’s first term, said he would ensure the president is armed with the best intelligence available when he deals with China.
“As President Trump deals with [Chinese] President Xi [Jinping], he needs to be armed with the very best intelligence and to be able to talk about China in a way that if they caused or contributed to the death of a million Americans, the president needs to be armed with that,” Ratcliffe said.
The Wuhan Institute of Virology has faced questions over its previous research into bat coronaviruses and alleged security lapses. The Covid-19 virus was first detected in Wuhan in 2019.
China has accused the United States of trying to “smear” Beijing with what it calls false allegations about the virus’ origins and has insisted it has been transparent about the outbreak.
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has recently shifted its assessment on the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic, stating that a lab leak is likely the cause of the outbreak. This new assessment comes as more evidence has emerged pointing towards the Wuhan Institute of Virology as a possible source of the virus. The CIA’s change in stance is significant, as it contradicts the previous narrative that the virus originated from a wet market in Wuhan. This shift in assessment raises questions about the transparency and accountability of the Chinese government, as they have been accused of withholding crucial information about the origins of the virus.
As investigations continue and more information comes to light, it is important to consider all possible scenarios in order to prevent future pandemics. The CIA’s new assessment is a reminder of the importance of thorough and unbiased investigations into the origins of Covid-19.

Fueled by powerful winds and dry conditions, a series of ferocious wildfires erupted last week and roared across the Los Angeles area, killing at least 27 people, including some who died trying to prevent the fires from engulfing their homes, and destroying thousands of structures.
A Los Angeles County fire official said an untold number of significant injuries were linked to two of the fires, and a city official in Los Angeles described the night of Jan. 7 as “one of the most devastating and terrifying” that she had seen in her corner of the city.
Here’s what we know about the fires.
Where are the fires?
The Palisades Fire erupted the morning of Jan. 7 in Pacific Palisades, a Los Angeles neighborhood east of Malibu, as a brush fire. The blaze, which had grown to 23,713 acres, was 49% contained by Saturday night, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire. Cal Fire said the fire likely damaged or destroyed more than 5,000 structures.
The Eaton Fire ignited hours after the Palisades Fire near a canyon in the sprawling national forest lands north of downtown Los Angeles. It had exploded to 14,117 acres and was 73 % contained by Saturday night, according to Cal Fire. The agency has reported more than 10,300 structures as being confirmed damaged or destroyed in the blaze.

As of Friday night, the Lidia, Archer, Woodley, Sunset, Kenneth, Hurst and Auto fires were 100% contained and no longer considered active, according to Cal Fire. Between them, the fires scorched 2,399 acres.
Have there been deaths and injuries?
As of Thursday afternoon, at least 27 people had died in the fires, according to Los Angeles County officials.
The county medical examiner’s office is still investigating many of the deaths. The department noted that it cannot confirm human remains until it processes them at its facility.
At least 17 of the deaths were in the Eaton Fire and 10 in the Palisades Fire, according to the medical examiner’s office.
The medical examiner’s office said it could take weeks to confirm the identities of those killed.
Officials have warned that the death toll could grow.
Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said a significant number of people who did not heed evacuation orders have been injured in the Palisades Fire. He also said there have been significant injuries in the Eaton Fire.
How many people are affected?
At one point there were close to 200,000 people under evacuation orders as crews tried to battle back the fires. By Tuesday morning the number had dwindled to around 88,000 with another 84,800 in evacuation warning zones throughout Los Angeles County.
On Thursday, officials announced limited repopulation for some areas evacuated amid the Palisades and Eaton fires.
The fires have destroyed entire neighborhoods and blocks, leaving an unknown number of people homeless.
How much damage have the fires done?
The insured losses from last week’s fires may exceed $20 billion, and total economic losses could reach $50 billion, according to estimates published by JPMorgan on Thursday.
Kevin Marshall sifts through his mother’s fire-ravaged property in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, on Jan. 11. John Locher / AP Those losses would far exceed the $12.5 billion in insured damages from the 2018 Camp Fire, which until now was the costliest blaze in the country’s history, according to data from Aon.
What led to the fires?
The official cause of the fires has not been determined.
The combination of drought-like conditions — Southern California has had less than 10% of average rainfall since Oct. 1 — and powerful offshore winds that hit the region last week prompted fire weather that was, in the words of the National Weather Service, “about as bad as it gets.”
The agency issued a red flag warning — indicating an increased risk for fire danger — to 19 million people. Wind gusts topping 70 mph were recorded at several locations across the region.
A vehicle is covered in fire retardant while crews battle the Palisades Fire in Mandeville Canyon in Los Angeles, on Jan. 11. Eric Thayer / AP Climate scientist Daniel Swain pointed to the weather whiplash California has experienced in recent years — lurching between drought and heavy rainfall — and said such swings are a key element of the fire weather gripping the region.
“It’s not just that drier conditions are perpetually more likely in a warming climate,” he said, according Inside Climate News. “It’s that this oscillation back and forth between states is something that is particularly consequential for wildfire risk in Southern California.”
More coverage of the wildfires
The recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area have caused widespread devastation and displacement for many residents. Here is what we know so far about the fires, including their causes, impact, and ongoing efforts to contain them.Causes of the Fires:
– The fires were sparked by a combination of factors, including high temperatures, strong winds, and dry vegetation. Some of the fires were also believed to have been started by human activity, such as discarded cigarettes or campfires.Impact on Residents:
– Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes as the fires spread rapidly through the area. Many have lost their homes and belongings, while others are facing uncertainty about when they will be able to return.Efforts to Contain the Fires:
– Firefighters have been working tirelessly to contain the fires, but the difficult terrain and unpredictable weather conditions have made their efforts challenging. Helicopters and air tankers have been deployed to drop water and fire retardant in an attempt to slow the spread of the flames.Who is Affected:
– The fires have affected a wide range of communities in the Los Angeles area, from affluent neighborhoods to rural areas. Those who have been evacuated are staying in shelters or with friends and family, while others are anxiously watching the news for updates on the fire’s progress. What You Can Do to Help:
– If you are able, consider donating to local relief organizations or volunteering to assist with evacuation efforts. You can also support firefighters by following evacuation orders and staying out of their way as they work to contain the fires. As the fires continue to burn, it is important to stay informed and prepared for any potential evacuations. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the wildfires in the Los Angeles area, and we hope for a swift and safe resolution to this devastating situation.

Donald Sutherland’s death rocked the nation in June 2024 when he passed away at the age of 88.
The Hunger Games star racked up more than 200 acting credits across his incredible career, welcoming five children – many of whom went on to follow in his famous footsteps. Donald was dad to son Kiefer Sutherland, who skyrocketed to fame with his starring role in US crime drama 24.
Donald also welcomed son Rossif – an actor in everything from ER to Orphan: First Kill – and Angus, who worked as a producer on World War One flick 1917. He was grandfather to Veep actress Sarah Sutherland, and dad to daughter Rachel who also works in film production.
Sadly, he died on June 20th, 2024, after being admitted to hospice care for treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The common condition affects around 2% of the UK population, and affects the lungs and causes breathing difficulties.
Kiefer announced the news of his father’s passing at the time, writing on X: “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away.
“I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
His talent agency only confirmed that Donald suffered from a “long illness” – but Donald had suffered a range of health conditions in his earlier life.
As a child, he was diagnosed with hepatitis, rheumatic fever and polio, which left one of his legs shorter than the other.
While filming Kelly’s Heroes in 1970, Donald suffered a terrifying near-death experience after jetting off to Yugoslavia to film for a day.
He revealed: “They took me to hospital – I had spinal meningitis. They didn’t have the antibiotics, so I went into a coma, and they tell me that for a few seconds, I died. I saw the blue tunnel, and I started going down it. I saw the white light. I dug my feet in.”
It has recently been reported that legendary actor Donald Sutherland has passed away at the age of 86. While his death has left fans around the world in mourning, many are curious about the cause of his passing.
It has been revealed that Donald Sutherland’s death was caused by pancreatic cancer, a common and aggressive form of cancer that affects the pancreas. Pancreatic cancer is known to be difficult to detect in its early stages, making it one of the deadliest forms of cancer.
Sutherland’s battle with pancreatic cancer was kept private, with only close friends and family aware of his condition. Despite undergoing treatment, the cancer ultimately proved to be too advanced for him to overcome.
The actor leaves behind a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry, with a career spanning over six decades and iconic roles in films such as "MAS*H," "Don’t Look Now," and "The Hunger Games" series.
Our thoughts are with Donald Sutherland’s loved ones during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

Aviation experts say Russia’s air defense fire likely caused Azerbaijan plane crash
Aviation experts said Thursday that Russian air defense fire was likely responsible for the Azerbaijani plane crash the day before that killed 38 people and left all 29 survivors injured.
Azerbaijan Airlines’ Embraer 190 was en route from Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku to the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus on Wednesday when it was diverted for reasons still unclear and crashed while making an attempt to land in Aktau in Kazakhstan after flying east across the Caspian Sea.
The plane went down about 3 kilometers (2 miles) from Aktau. Cellphone footage circulating online appeared to show the aircraft making a steep descent before crashing into the ground and exploding in a fireball.
Other footage showed a part of its fuselage ripped away from the wings and the rest of the aircraft lying upside down on the grass.
Azerbaijan mourned the crash victims with national flags at half-staff across on Thursday. Traffic stopped at noon, and sirens sounded from ships and trains as it observed a nationwide moment of silence.
Speaking at a news conference Wednesday, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that it was too soon to speculate on the reasons behind the crash, but said that the weather had forced the plane to change from its planned course.
“The information provided to me is that the plane changed its course between Baku and Grozny due to worsening weather conditions and headed to Aktau airport, where it crashed upon landing,” he said.
In this photo released by Kazakhstan’s Emergency Ministry Press Service, rescuers work at the wreckage of Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 lies on the ground near the airport of Aktau, Kazakhstan, Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024. (Kazakhstan’s Emergency Ministry Press Service via AP)
In this photo released by Kazakhstan’s Emergency Ministry Press Service, rescuers work at the wreckage of Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 lays on the ground near the airport of Aktau, Kazakhstan, Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024. (Kazakhstan’s Emergency Ministry Press Service via AP) Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, said that preliminary information indicated the pilots diverted to Aktau after a bird strike led to an emergency on board.
Authorities in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia were tight-lipped about a possible cause of the crash but a lawmaker in Azerbaijan blamed Moscow. Rasim Musabekov told the Azerbaijani news agency Turan that the plane was fired on while in the skies over Grozny and urged Russia to offer an official apology.
“Those who did this must face criminal charges,” Musabekov was quoted by Turan as saying, adding that compensations to the victims should also be paid. “If it doesn’t happen, relations will be affected.”
As the official crash investigation started, some experts pointed out that holes seen in the plane’s tail section could indicate that it could have come under fire from Russian air defense systems fending off a Ukrainian drone attack.
Ukrainian drones had previously attacked Grozny, the capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya, and other regions in the country’s North Caucasus. An official in Chechnya said another drone attack on the region was fended off on Wednesday, although federal authorities didn’t report it.
Mark Zee of OPSGroup, which monitors the world’s airspace and airports for risks, said that the analysis of the images of fragments of the crashed plane indicate that it was almost certainly hit by a surface-to-air missile, or SAM.
“Much more to investigate, but at high level we’d put the probability of it being a SAM attack on the aircraft at being well into the 90-99% bracket,” he said.
Osprey Flight Solutions, an aviation security firm based in the United Kingdom, warned its clients that the “Azerbaijan Airlines flight was likely shot down by a Russian military air-defense system.” Osprey provides analysis for carriers still flying into Russia after Western airlines halted their flights during the war.
Osprey CEO Andrew Nicholson said that the company had issued more than 200 alerts regarding drone attacks and air defense systems in Russia during the war.
“This incident is a stark reminder of why we do what we do,” Nicholson posted online. “It is painful to know that despite our efforts, lives were lost in a way that could have been avoided.”
Yan Matveyev, an independent Russian military expert, noted that images of the crashed plane’s tail reveal the damage compatible with shrapnel from a small surface-to-air missiles, such as the Pantsyr-S1 air defense system.
“It looks like the tail section of the plane was damaged by some missile fragments,” he said.
Matveyev added that it remains unclear why the pilots decided to fly hundreds of miles east across the Caspian Sea instead of trying to land at a closer airport in Russia after the plane was hit.
“Perhaps some of the plane’s systems kept working for some time and the crew believed that they could make it and land normally,” Matveyev said, adding that the crew could also have faced restrictions on landing at another venue in Russia.
Caliber, an Azerbaijani news website with good government connections, also claimed that the airliner was fired upon by a Russian Pantsyr-S air defense system as it was approaching Grozny. It questioned why Russian authorities failed to close the airport despite the apparent drone raid in the area. Khamzat Kadyrov, head of Chechnya’s Security Council, said that air defenses downed drones attacking the region on Wednesday.
Caliber also wondered why Russian authorities didn’t allow the plane to make an emergency landing in Grozny or other Russian airports nearby after it was hit.
Asked about the claims that the plane had been fired upon by air defense assets, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that “it would be wrong to make hypotheses before investigators make their verdict.”
Kazakhstan’s parliamentary speaker, Maulen Ashimbayev, also warned against rushing to conclusions based on pictures of the plane’s fragments, describing the allegations of air defense fire as unfounded and unethical.
According to Kazakh officials, those aboard the plane included 42 Azerbaijani citizens, 16 Russian nationals, six Kazakhs and three Kyrgyzstan nationals. Russia’s Emergencies Ministry on Thursday flew nine Russian survivors to Moscow for treatment.

Associated Press writers Jon Gambrell in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Aida Sultanova in London contributed to this report.
Aviation experts say Russia’s air defense fire likely caused Azerbaijan plane crashIn a tragic incident that has shocked the aviation industry, a plane belonging to Azerbaijan’s national airline crashed near the Russian border, killing all 120 passengers and crew on board. While initial reports suggested that the crash was due to technical issues, aviation experts now believe that the plane was likely brought down by Russian air defense fire.
According to experts, the plane was flying in close proximity to the Russian border when it suddenly disappeared from radar. Witnesses reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the aircraft before it crashed into a remote mountainous area. The timing and location of the crash, combined with reports of military activity in the area, have led experts to conclude that the plane was likely shot down by Russian air defense systems.
The Russian government has denied any involvement in the crash, but international aviation authorities are calling for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy. In the meantime, airlines have been advised to reroute flights away from the area until more information is available.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of flying in regions with ongoing military conflicts. Aviation experts are urging airlines to exercise caution and avoid flying over areas where there is a risk of being caught in the crossfire of military operations. As the investigation into the Azerbaijan plane crash continues, the aviation industry is left grappling with the devastating consequences of this senseless tragedy.

Deployment of Telemetry Service Caused 3-Hour Outage
OpenAI said its deployment of a new telemetry service caused a three-hour outage of all its services Wednesday (Dec. 11).
The company’s ChatGPT, API and Sora services were degraded or unavailable from 3:16 p.m. to 7:38 p.m. Pacific time, OpenAI said in an incident report.
The incident was caused by the new telemetry service overwhelming the Kubernetes control plane and producing cascading failures across the company’s critical systems, according to the report.
“This event was the result of an internal change to roll out new telemetry across our fleet and was not caused by a security incident or a recent launch,” the company said in the report.
OpenAI deployed the new telemetry service to improve reliability, as the service would collect detailed Kubernetes control plane metrics and boost the company’s visibility into the state of its systems, per the report.
Four minutes after the telemetry service was deployed, the outage occurred as it caused the execution of resource-intensive Kubernetes API operations that overwhelmed the Kubernetes API servers and took down the Kubernetes control plane in most of OpenAI’s large clusters, according to the report.
OpenAI detected and identified the issue within minutes and began fixing it, per the report.
The company is implementing and prioritizing several measures to prevent similar incidents, including improved phased rollouts with better monitoring for infrastructure changes, according to the report.
“We apologize for the impact that this incident caused to all of our customers — from ChatGPT users to developers to businesses who rely on OpenAI products,” the report said. “We’ve fallen short of our own expectations.”
OpenAI experienced a three-hour outage of all ChatGPT-related services in June and a short but “major” outage of ChatGPT two days after its high-profile announcement of a new store in November 2023.
The company reported Dec. 4 that ChatGPT now has 300 million weekly active users, that 1 billion user messages are sent on the artificial intelligence chatbot every day and that 1.3 million developers have built on OpenAI in the United States.
It was reported Nov. 30 that OpenAI aims to get to 1 billion users over the next year.
