  • ‘Ivy League Murder’: CBS’ 48 HOURS Reports On Slain Yale Grad Student

NEW HAVEN, CT —As reported by Patch over the course of two years, the 2021 murder of Yale graduate student 26-year-old Kevin Jiang at the hands of Qinxuan Pan, an MIT graduate student, in East Rock is being explored in an episode of CBS’ 48 HOURS on Saturday.

A bright future was shattered when newly engaged Kevin Jiang, 26, a Yale graduate student and former Army National Guardsman, was gunned down in New Haven, Connecticut. What appeared to be a road rage incident soon unraveled into a story of obsession and premeditation.

Correspondent Anne-Marie Green reports on that 2021 night in “The Ivy League Murder,” to be broadcast Saturday, Jan. 25 at 10 p.m., on CBS.

    Watch a preview here.

The case would lead investigators to Qinxuan Pan, a brilliant MIT graduate student in artificial intelligence with a dark plan. 48 HOURS got unprecedented access inside the investigation of a nearly perfect murder that unmasked Pan as a wealthy, tech-savvy killer who was able to outmaneuver authorities for months across nearly a dozen states. Pan was able to shut off the GPS in vehicles he fled in.

David Zaweski, the lead homicide detective in Jiang’s murder and his colleague Steven Cunningham faced a daunting investigation.

“The suspect was out there,” Zaweski told Green in an exclusive interview. “We didn’t know where he went … and we didn’t know what he would be doing next.”

Detectives made a breakthrough while combing through Pan’s digital footprint to search for connections between Pan and Jiang. “We’ll use Facebook as a tool to try and get a background on an individual, who they’re friends with,” Zaweski said. At first, there was no apparent link—until they found Zion Perry, Jiang’s fiancée, listed as a friend of Pan. Perry and Pan had crossed paths years earlier at MIT, but Perry told detectives they were nothing but acquaintances.

“It did seem like there was a secret obsession of Pan’s going on behind the scenes that Kevin wasn’t aware of, and that Zion wasn’t aware of,” Zaweski said.

Investigators believed Pan’s fixation drove him to meticulously plan Kevin’s murder. Records show that in the months before the murder, Pan randomly fired .45 caliber bullets into four homes in New Haven. Detectives suspect he was trying to mislead them into believing Kevin’s death was just a random shooting like the others in the area.

Pan’s one-time attorney William Gerace spoke exclusively to 48 HOURS, telling Green that his former client was on “another level” of intelligence. “Genius?” Green asked. “Genius,” Gerace answered

In a shocking and tragic turn of events, CBS’ 48 HOURS will be covering the case of the Ivy League Murder, which revolves around the murder of a Yale graduate student. The victim, a promising young scholar, was found dead in their apartment in what appears to be a senseless act of violence.

The investigation into the Ivy League Murder has sent shockwaves through the prestigious university and the broader academic community. As details emerge about the victim and their life, questions abound about who could have committed such a heinous crime and why.

Tune in to CBS’ 48 HOURS as they delve into the case, speaking with investigators, friends and family of the victim, and experts in criminal justice to try and uncover the truth behind this tragic event. • CBS 58’s Sam Kuffel is out after criticizing Elon Musk arm gesture

CBS 58’s Sam Kuffel is out after criticizing Elon Musk’s arm gesture

Sam Kuffel, a reporter for CBS 58, has been let go from the station after criticizing Elon Musk’s arm gesture during a recent interview. Kuffel called the gesture “unprofessional” and “disrespectful” towards the interviewer.

Many fans of Musk and supporters of his work have come to his defense, saying that Kuffel’s comments were unwarranted and exaggerated. However, others have pointed out that Kuffel was simply expressing his opinion and should not have been fired for it.

The incident has sparked a debate on social media about the role of journalists in reporting on public figures and the consequences of speaking out against powerful individuals. Some have argued that Kuffel’s dismissal sets a dangerous precedent for journalists who may be afraid to speak their minds in the future.

Whatever your opinion on the matter, one thing is clear: the relationship between journalists and public figures is always a delicate balance, and sometimes, speaking truth to power comes with consequences.

  • CBS debuts a formulaic medical mystery

David Shore created one of the most successful medical procedurals ever back in 2004 by reimagining Sherlock Holmes as Gregory House, a brilliant, cantankerous doctor diagnosing mysterious illnesses with the help of a small team of young MDs. CBS’s Watson blatantly rips off House, making the connection to the works of Arthur Conan Doyle explicit in order to weave in a larger mystery but otherwise delivering an extremely formulaic throwback lacking the biting wit that made House great.

Created by Craig Sweeny, who also worked as a writer on CBS’s earlier Sherlock Holmes procedural Elementary, Watson follows the consulting detective’s partner Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut) after the events of Reichenbach Falls, where Holmes and his nemesis Professor James Moriarty seemingly plunged to their deaths. In his will, Holmes leaves Watson the funds to create his own clinic in Pittsburgh (presumably both London and Pennsylvania were too expensive as the show is actually filmed in Vancouver), where he can study a new odd case every week.

The pilot is an absolute mess, laying out the Holmes mythology and then clumsily rushing the introductions of the entire supporting cast and the show’s formula. The dialogue and story beats are all absurdly predictable, too. Watson’s morally ambiguous fixer Shinwell Johnson (Ritchie Coster), a minor Holmes character who was also given a larger part in Elementary, reverently mentions that Holmes was the only person who could pull off saying “Eureka!” before adding that maybe there was one other person. (Of course, that’s exactly what Watson says when he cracks the episode’s case.) Then, in Watson’s first of many scenes arguing with medical director Mary Morstan (Rochelle Aytes), he asks if her problem is with him professionally or as his ex-wife. And when trying to console an anxious patient, Watson basically gives her his whole backstory.

Chestnut does a solid job with the material he’s given, portraying a character usually relegated to a sidekick as much more like Holmes himself, perpetually confident in his own abilities even as he self-medicates for the traumatic brain injury he sustained while trying to save the famed detective. He’s smug but treats everything as a learning opportunity for his team, giving them reason to seek to impress him and keeping his criticisms relatively benign.

Watson has assembled his crew for their specialist skills and experiences as experimental subjects in their own right, including Stephens and Adam Croft (Peter Mark Kendall), identical twins who had a falling out because they dated the same woman, and immunologist Sasha Lubbock (Inga Schlingmann), who was born in China and raised in an affluent suburb of Texas that gifted her a comically thick drawl. The most questionable addition is Watson’s personal neurologist Ingrid Derian (Eve Harlow), who he suspects is a sociopath. She seems to agree with the diagnosis given that she has the page for antisocial personality disorder bookmarked in her copy of the Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders. This is not a subtle show.

The characters get just a touch of development each episode, following relatively broad strokes like Stephens being the glasses-wearing workaholic twin jealous of his more easygoing and charming brother. Sasha is the fairly generic nice one, leaving her vulnerable to both being strung along by her boyfriend and manipulated by Ingrid. The episodes are similarly predictable, with cold opens revealing some sort of crisis Watson’s team will have to solve while spewing a prodigious amount of medical jargon. (Each hour typically culminates with an escalation of a condition that requires emergency surgery.) There’s also a touch of classic detective work like tracking down relatives to discover genetic histories or investigating homes for clues about what’s really going on in order to solve the mystery right in the nick of time.

Very little about Watson is revealed in the first five episodes of the series that were made available to critics, beyond that he went to work with Holmes while struggling to reintegrate after returning from war. There are some intriguing hints about who the doctor really is, and while the reveal the show seems to be building towards still isn’t original, it could be a fun twist on a character that’s been reinvented so many times already.

Ironically, Watson shows the most potential when it gets further away from mystery and highlights character-driven stories about seeking humanity in the practice of medicine. Episode four breaks from the formula by having the initial patient die on the operating table, dedicating the rest of the time to Sasha trying to track down the family of her medical-school cadaver who had similar symptoms. Having each character share their memories of the corpses they worked on provides an unusual link to bring them together even as it cements the different ways they view medicine and patients.

Episode five is the show’s strongest, shaking things up by focusing on someone with chronic illness (in this case, sickle cell anemia) and spurring an ethical debate about allowing people to suffer when treatment is available but financially out of reach. The show has some decent humor, too, courtesy of a sketchy biohacker friend of Watson. But it’s unlikely that Watson will achieve the success of House. That said, if it takes some more risks as the season goes on, it could at least provide some engaging comfort TV.

Watson premieres January 26 on CBS

CBS has just premiered a new medical drama that follows a tried-and-true formula: a brilliant but troubled doctor solves complex medical cases while navigating personal and professional challenges. The show, titled “Diagnosis,” stars a charismatic lead actor as Dr. Ryan Stone, a maverick physician with a troubled past who is not afraid to bend the rules to get results.

While some critics have criticized the show for being formulaic and predictable, others have praised its engaging storylines and strong performances. The show’s creators have promised that each episode will feature a new medical mystery that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats, while also delving into the personal lives of the doctors and nurses at the hospital.

Whether you’re a fan of medical dramas or just looking for a new show to binge-watch, “Diagnosis” promises to deliver a mix of drama, suspense, and heartwarming moments. Tune in to CBS on Thursday nights to see if Dr. Stone can crack the latest medical mystery and save the day.

  • ‘Hollywood Squares’ to Get a Week-Long Daytime Stunt on CBS

CBS is taking advantage of a temporarily vacant afternoon timeslot to give its new primetime gamer “Hollywood Squares” some daytime exposure. The rebooted game show, featuring Drew Barrymore in center square, will get a week-long daytime showcase from Monday, Jan. 27, to Friday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT/PT — the timeslot formerly held by “The Talk,” which ended its run in December.

For now, CBS has been airing “The Price Is Right” repeats in that slot as a temporary placeholder until new soap opera “Beyond the Gates” premieres on Feb. 24. In the meantime, this gives CBS a chance to find more eyeballs to sample “Hollywood Squares.” CBS will air repeats of the show’s first four episodes throughout the week (Friday’s episodes will be the same as Monday’s).

The week-long programming stunt also comes as CBS recently shifted its Wednesday game night schedule — moving “Hollywood Squares” to 8 p.m. ET (instead of the originally planned 10 p.m.) starting Jan. 29. (Also on the evening: “The Price Is Right at Night” at 9 p.m. ET and “Raid the Cage” at 10 p.m. ET.)

NFL analyst and “CBS Mornings” co-host Nate Burleson hosts “Hollywood Squares,” the format that features celebrities answering trivia questions — usually with a joke attached. Jesse Collins (for Jesse Collins Entertainment) and Barrymore (via her Flower Films) are the producers on this new “Hollywood Squares.” The show last appeared in daytime with a syndicated version hosted by Tom Bergeron from 1998 to 2004.

Here are the guests on the week-long showcase:

Monday, Jan. 27: First half-hour features Tyra Banks, Julie Bowen, Whitney Cummings, Tiffany Haddish, Thomas Lennon, Ms. Pat, Jeff Ross and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog; second half hour features Tichina Arnold, Nicole Byer, Drew Carey, Pete Holmes, Debi Mazar, Bobby Moynihan, Chelsea Peretti and JB Smoove.

Tuesday, Jan. 28: First half hour features Tyra Banks, Whitney Cummings, Tiffany Haddish, Sam Jay, Thomas Lennon, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Andrew Rannells and Sheryl Underwood. Second half hour features Julie Bowen, Margaret Cho, Leslie Jones, Carson Kressley, Ross Mathews, Kevin Nealon, RuPaul and Paul Scheer.

Wednesday, Jan. 29: First half hour features Tanner Adell, Whitney Cummings, Pete Holmes, Chaka Khan, Jay Leno, Thomas Lennon, Nelly and Patton Oswalt. Second half hour features Nicole Byer, Drew Carey, Jeff Dunham, Max Greenfield, Pete Holmes, Lil Rel Howery, Rita Moreno and Bobby Moynihan.

Thursday, Jan. 30: First half hour features Nicole Byer, Drew Carey, Luenell, Debi Mazar, Bobby Moynihan, Chelsea Peretti, Phil Rosenthal and JB Smoove. Second half hour features Julie Bowen, Margaret Cho, Leslie Jones, Carson Kressley, Jeannie Mai, Kevin Nealon, RuPaul and Paul Scheer.

Friday, Jan. 31: Same as Monday

  • ‘Hollywood Squares’ Revival Gets Daytime Run On CBS

CBS continues its promotional push for Hollywood Squares. After giving the reboot a special airing behind the AFC Divisional Playoff Game between Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills, the network is now putting the game show in its natural habitat — daytime — for a limited run.

Encore episodes will air Mon Jan. 27 – Friday Jan. 31 at 2 PM ET, 1 PM CT/PT. On most stations, Hollywood Squares will temporarily replace repeats of another CBS game show, The Price Is Right whose originals run earlier in the day.

The majority of Hollywood Squares incarnations over the past six decades have aired in daytime syndication. The CBS revival also stars a current daytime syndication star, Drew Barrymore, who has a talk show on the CBS stations.

Barrymore is the center square on the revival, hosted by Nate Burleson, co-host of CBS Mornings and NFL analyst.

CBS also has been tinkering with Hollywood Squares‘ primetime run, moving the show from 10 PM to 8 PM Wednesdays when it moves to the night next week.

Originally slated to premiere Jan. 9, Hollywood Squares‘ debut was pushed by a week due to the devastation from the L.A. wildfires.

Exciting news for game show fans! The beloved classic game show Hollywood Squares is set to make a comeback with a daytime run on CBS.

The show, which features celebrities sitting in a giant tic-tac-toe board and answering trivia questions for contestants to win prizes, was a staple of television in the ’70s and ’80s. Now, a new generation of viewers will get to enjoy the laughs and entertainment that Hollywood Squares brings.

With a fresh lineup of celebrity guests and a modern twist on the classic format, this revival is sure to be a hit with audiences of all ages. Stay tuned for more updates on when you can catch Hollywood Squares on CBS!

First on NewscastStudio: CBS News has moved up Norah O’Donnell’s last day on the “CBS Evening News” due to golf coverage.

Originally, O’Donnell’s last day on the “Evening News” was slated for Jan. 24, 2025. However, due to CBS coverage of the Farmers Insurance Open, the newscast will not air nationally Jan. 24, so the network has moved up her final broadcast to Jan. 23, 2025, a network spokesperson confirmed to NewscastStudio.

O’Donnell has anchored the broadcast since 2019. In July 2024, the network announced she would step down from anchor as the broadcast in 2025 and shift to becoming a correspondent for the network.

The network is planning to re-launch the broadcast Jan. 27, 2025, with an ensemble format featuring John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois along with Margaret Brennan anchoring political news coverage from Washington, D.C. As part of the overhaul, the broadcast will move its production operations back to New York City.

CBS had opted to move the permanent studio for “Evening” to Washington, D.C., when O’Donnell became anchor. O’Donnell’s family lives in the Washington, D.C., area.

CBS has announced that Norah O’Donnell’s last day as anchor of the “CBS Evening News” has been moved up due to the network’s coverage of the PGA Championship golf tournament. O’Donnell was initially set to anchor her final broadcast on Friday, but will now be signing off on Thursday instead.

The decision to move up O’Donnell’s departure date was made in order to accommodate CBS’s live coverage of the golf tournament, which is scheduled to air on Friday evening. O’Donnell has been the anchor of the “CBS Evening News” since July 2019, and has been praised for her journalistic integrity and hard-hitting interviews.

While fans of O’Donnell may be disappointed to see her leave the anchor chair earlier than expected, they can still catch her in her new role as a correspondent for “60 Minutes.” O’Donnell will continue to bring her signature style of reporting to the long-running news program, ensuring that viewers will still have the opportunity to see her in action.

As O’Donnell prepares to bid farewell to the “CBS Evening News,” fans can tune in on Thursday to watch her final broadcast and wish her well in her future endeavors. We wish Norah O’Donnell the best of luck in her new role and look forward to seeing her continue to excel in her career.

  • Norah O’Donnell Final ‘CBS Evening News’ Broadcast Set

UPDATED with date change: Norah O’Donnell’s final night anchoring the CBS Evening News is now January 23, 2025, CBS confirmed Friday.

O’Donnell, who announced in July that she was exiting the role, was to have had her final show January 24, but because of CBS Sports’ coverage of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open that day, the CBS Evening News will be a West Coast-only edition.

The network shifted the date by a day so O’Donnell’s final show can be a full, national broadcast.

As previously announced, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois are taking over as lead anchors beginning January 27 as the CBS Evening News returns to New York as its home base after five years Washington, D.C.

PREVIOUSLY, November 22, 2024: Norah O’Donnell’s final night anchoring the CBS Evening News will be January 24, the CBS network’s news division told its staff Friday, which will bring to an end her five-plus-year run as well as the show’s run in Washington, D.C.

In July, O’Donnell said she planned to exit the anchor chair after the 2024 election, segueing to a new role as senior correspondent doing high-profile sit-down interviews. Her last day comes four days after Donald Trump’s inauguration for a second POTUS term on January 20.

The move also ushers in John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois taking over as lead anchors beginning January 27 as the CBS Evening News returns to New York as its home base after five years D.C.

O’Donnell’s planned exit is part of broader changes being undertaken at the nightly newscast and the news division. CBS Evening News executive producer Adam Verdugo stepped down in early September, with Bill Owens, executive producer of 60 Minutes, adding duties as supervising producer of the nightly news broadcast.

In addition to the new format, the plans are to infuse the broadcast with more 60 Minutes content and and ensemble of correspondents, who will be filing for the Evening News “when they have big news to break,” wrote Wendy McMahon, CEO of CBS News and Stations, when Dickerson and DuBois were announced. Dickerson and DuBois will be based in New York, with a group that includes Margaret Brennan regularly leading coverage from D.C. and Lonnie Quinn providing weather segments.

Other changes at CBS News include Adrienne Roark and Jennifer Mitchell taking on expanded roles as part of a new leadership structure. Roark will serve as president of editorial and newsgathering for CBS News and Stations, assuming the responsibilities of Ingrid Ciprián-Matthews, who had stepped down as president of CBS News. Roark will lead field and newsroom and newsgathering teams as well as CBS News Radio.

O’Donnell’s first show as anchor was on July 15, 2019. Previously, she had been co-anchor of CBS This Morning and, before that, the network’s chief White House correspondent.

At the time she announced her plans to leave, she said, “It’s time to do something different,” she wrote in a memo to staff. “This presidential election will be my seventh as a journalist, and for many of us in this business we tend to look at our careers in terms of these milestone events.”

She added that she has “made a long-term commitment to CBS News to continue to do the same storytelling and big interviews that have been our hallmark. I will continue to contribute to Evening News and all of our news broadcasts, including 60 Minutes.”

Dominic Patten contributed to this report.

After six years as the anchor of the “CBS Evening News,” Norah O’Donnell is preparing to say goodbye to the iconic news program. O’Donnell’s final broadcast is set to air on Friday, February 18th, marking the end of an era for the respected journalist.

Throughout her time at the helm of the “CBS Evening News,” O’Donnell has delivered hard-hitting news coverage, insightful interviews, and compelling storytelling. She has tackled some of the most pressing issues facing our country and the world, earning praise for her journalistic integrity and dedication to delivering the facts.

As O’Donnell prepares to bid farewell to the anchor desk, fans of the “CBS Evening News” can expect a poignant and memorable final broadcast. O’Donnell is sure to reflect on her time as anchor, thank her colleagues and viewers, and offer her thoughts on the state of journalism today.

While O’Donnell’s departure from the “CBS Evening News” is bittersweet, fans can rest assured that she will continue to make her mark on the world of journalism in whatever path she chooses to pursue next. Join us in wishing Norah O’Donnell all the best as she embarks on her next chapter.

Norah O’Donnell’s last night anchoring “CBS Evening News” will be Thursday, January 23, one day earlier than had been previously announced. • Jim Nantz, Trevor Immelman, CBS execs weigh in on Justin Thomas letter

Jim Nantz is prepping to do double duty this week from Kansas City, where he will broadcast the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open (being played in San Diego) on Saturday and call the AFC Championship game from Arrowhead Stadium between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Yet he still had time to hop on a Zoom call with colleagues and already had seen the letter that the PGA Tour’s Justin Thomas had sent to his fellow players imploring them to be more open and accessible to the Tour’s broadcast partners.

“Justin Thomas did the broadcast partners a big favor and as a result, he did something that was a gift to the viewer,” he said. “Because I do believe it will help create change and more participants in what we’re looking for…So good on JT, good for all of us.”

Recently, Justin Thomas found himself at the center of controversy after uttering a homophobic slur during a PGA Tour event. In response, the reigning Player of the Year issued a heartfelt apology and vowed to do better. However, the incident has sparked a larger conversation about language and behavior in the world of golf.

CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz, Masters champion Trevor Immelman, and other CBS executives have weighed in on the situation, offering their thoughts on Thomas’ letter of apology. Nantz praised Thomas for taking responsibility for his actions and showing maturity in his response. Immelman echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of learning from mistakes and striving to be a better person.

On the other hand, some CBS executives expressed concern about the impact of Thomas’ actions on the image of the sport and its sponsors. They stressed the need for golfers to be mindful of their words and actions, as they are role models for fans of all ages.

Overall, the response to Justin Thomas’ apology has been mixed, with some applauding his accountability and others calling for more concrete actions to address the issue of discrimination in golf. As the conversation continues, it is clear that the sport has a long way to go in promoting inclusivity and respect for all players.
