Local Flavor: Celebrating National Pie Day in Our Neighborhood | Local Business
MILFORD, N.Y. — Today marks National Pie Day, a great time to celebrate this dessert that has a rich history spanning centuries.
While one might expect this holiday to fall in November for Thanksgiving, it actually takes place on Jan. 23 every year, honoring the long-standing tradition of fruit- or meat-filled pastries.
“Historians trace pie’s initial origins to the Greeks, who are thought to be the originators of the pastry shell, which they made by combining water and flour. The wealthy Romans used many different kinds of meats — even mussels and other types of seafood — in their pies,” according to the article “A Brief History of Pie” by Time magazine.
As for why this holiday isn’t observed in the month of gratitude, Time notes that there were likely no pies at the first Thanksgiving in 1621. In fact, the earliest recorded pumpkin pie recipe appeared in a cookbook dating back to 1675.
From diners to fast-food joints, pies have woven their way into American culture since the days of the original Greek recipes.
For many, pies evoke memories of holidays, family gatherings or simply represent the perfect dessert.
But when searching for a fresh fruit pie, where can you find one?
In the Mohawk Valley, there’s a mom-and-pop farmstand that offers pies made from scratch, with no canned ingredients.
Tasty Pastry by Gog is situated in Otsego County on St. Hwy. 28 south of Milford in the Town of Maryland. Pies cost $15.

Across the world of television and film, multiple actors have played Superman in live-action and various animated properties. With the Man of Steel continuing to be one of Hollywood’s most beloved superheroes, Superman’s fanbase has only expanded from generation to generation, and once in every while, fans are lucky to meet multiple Supermen in person.
At the recent Fan Expo New Orleans event, a passionate Superman fan and cosplayer @Mikel_Byrnes shared a new photo with him and not one but six different actors who have played Krypton’s last son in live-action and animation. Check it out below:
Byrnes was suited up as the Man of Steel next to Smallville’s Tom Welling, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman’s Dean Cain, Justice League/Justice League Unlimited’s George Newbern, Superman: The Animated Series’ Tim Daly, Superman & Lois’ Tyler Hoechlin, and Superman Returns’ Brandon Routh. While Routh is the only Superman actor who got his DC start through film, he reprised the role in 2019’s Arrowverse crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths.

That is why it became such a big deal when Welling and Routh got to join Hoechlin in Crisis on Infinite Earths back in 2019 as their versions of Clark Kent, as it honors what came before while also celebrating what was happening in DC’s current media. This is also why it is incredibly special to be able to have a similar moment in real-life with several Superman stars at the same time.
