Defense Agency Pauses Celebrations of Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Women’s History Month and Others
The Pentagon’s intelligence agency has paused observances of Pride Month, Black History Month, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Holocaust Days of Remembrance, Juneteenth and other annual cultural events, as federal agencies scramble to try to conform to President Trump’s repudiation of diversity programs.
The Defense Intelligence Agency on Tuesday published a memo to its work force with a subject line of “Pause on Special Emphasis Programs and Related Activities and Events.”
“We are receiving questions across the work force on the way forward,” the memo said. It added that the agency would “pause all activities and events related to Agency Special Emphasis Programs effective immediately and until further notice.”
The agency’s pause is in effect “until further notice,” the memo said. It said that the directive would not affect the observance of federal holidays, so presumably agency employees would still get Martin Luther King’s Birthday and Juneteenth off, provided they remain federal holidays.
The pause came as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday announced a new task force targeting diversity considerations in Pentagon promotions and job assignments, the latest maneuver in the Trump administration’s renunciation of “wokeness.”
In a memo to senior Pentagon leadership, Mr. Hegseth said that diversity, equity and inclusion policies were “incompatible with the values” of the Defense Department.
The task force must issue a final report on how to get rid of diversity programs by June 1, Mr. Hegseth said in the memo.
In a surprising move, the Defense Agency has decided to pause celebrations of important cultural and historical events such as Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Women’s History Month, and others. This decision has sparked controversy and raised questions about the agency’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.Many are questioning why the Defense Agency would choose to pause celebrations of such significant events that honor the achievements and contributions of marginalized communities. Black History Month 2025: Celebrations in FayettevilleAs Black History Month approaches, the city of Fayetteville is gearing up for a month of celebrations to honor the rich cultural heritage and contributions of African Americans. “Celebrations with Lacey Chabert” is streaming on Hallmark+.
One of Hallmark’s favorite actresses, Lacey Chabert, steps away from the scripts in her new series, “Celebrations with Lacey Chabert.” Besides hosting this series, she is also the executive producer of this 10-episode series on Hallmark+.
Chabert has starred in 38 Hallmark movies and is still working hard at creating dramatic content for the network. In “Celebrations with Lacey Chabert,” she celebrates the accomplishments of people in the community who have made an impact in some way or another.
Through each episode, Chabert is joined by her friends to honor everyday heroes who have no idea they are heroes, and have no idea they are about to be surprised with a celebration just for them.
“Lacey Chabert shares the same passion for celebrating everyday heroes as we do at Hallmark,” said Hamilton Daly, executive vice president of programming for Hallmark Media. “Lacey’s natural warmth and genuine nature make her a perfect fit for this series.”
“As a lifelong DIY enthusiast, I fell in love with party planning while coming up with creative ways to bring my daughter’s birthday parties to life,” Chabert said. “I am so excited to lend my love of crafts to create joyous moments for deserving people. This is going to be an epic party as we celebrate real-life heroes, complete with the ups and downs that only unscripted television can capture.”
Chabert said she still loves doing the Hallmark movies. “And in doing ‘Celebrations,’ it was such a joy to bring to life because we get to celebrate unsung heroes and everyday heroes who oftentimes don’t have a spotlight on them and just deserve to be thanked and to realize the profound effect that they have in their communities,” she said. “And I met so many amazing people along the journey, and it’s such a beautiful show that I am so proud to be a part of.”
The actress considers Hallmark her home and has stayed with the network for many years because of the warm feeling she has there. Hallmark has afforded her many opportunities, not least of which is this new series, which she is extremely excited about and proud to bring to the viewers.
Chabert explained, ” I learned as much as I could about the person and their story. And, honestly, most of it is live and on the job because you end up talking to their family members or co-workers or people there that they’ve affected their lives for the better, and they tell you so much about them. And then, you find out so much about this person. And then, finally, with the help of these incredible party planners, Lisa and Marissa, we throw them a huge surprise celebration at the end.”
“I’ve always wanted to do a show that I get to throw these amazing parties because it’s something I love doing in real life, and let’s do it for deserving kids. … And then, here we are. We’ve actually gotten to make that show. And it’s just such a blessing. And I just love that we are all able to creatively have a voice and help bring these things to life. And it’s really just been an incredible journey.”
Viewers will be inspired by the everyday heroes honored in “Celebrations.” It is an uplifting show that in today’s world of difficult times shares the unselfish acts of others.
“Celebrations with Lacey Chabert” began streaming last September, but the fun of watching the celebrations is never outdated and good for a little “pick me up” any time. The series streams on Hallmark+. As of this writing, there is speculation about a second season.

President-elect Donald Trump arrived in Washington Saturday to kick off days of pageantry heralding his second inauguration as president, four years after he departed the city under the shadow of an attack by his supporters on the Capitol.
His plane landed at Dulles Airport in the evening before he headed to Trump Sterling Golf Club for planned evening celebrations and fireworks. Trump got off the plane around 7:20 p.m., he did not take questions, reporters said, but stopped briefly to wave at the press and pumped his fist twice in the air.
Earlier, Trump, Melania and their son Barron boarded the plane at 5:13 p.m. Eastern Time and departed Palm Beach International Airport, Florida, near Mar-a-Lago, where his team has spent his transition since he won the election. The three of them turned around at the top of the stairs, and Trump waved before heading inside the plane.

The ritualistic changing of power will get underway as Washington’s solemn pomp is paired with Trump’s brand of party: a fireworks showcase at one of his luxury golf properties, guests including tech industry titans, friends from the business world and conservative media stars, and thousands of his supporters streaming in from around the country.
With a blast of Arctic air expected to leave the nation’s capital facing frigid temperatures on Inauguration Day organizers were also scrambling to move inside most of Monday’s outdoor events, including the swearing-in ceremony.
“There is an Arctic blast sweeping the Country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I don’t want to see people hurt, or injured, in any way…Therefore, I have ordered the Inauguration Address, in addition to prayers and other speeches, to be delivered in the United States Capitol Rotunda, as was used by Ronald Reagan in 1985, also because of very cold weather.”
Country music stars Carrie Underwood, Billy Ray Cyrus and Jason Aldean, disco band the Village People, rapper Nelly and musician Kid Rock are all scheduled to perform at inauguration-related ceremonies and events. Actor Jon Voight and wrestler Hulk Hogan are also expected to make appearances, as are a crew of Trump-embracing business executives: Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.
The only public event on Trump’s schedule is an evening reception and fireworks show at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia, outside the city.
While Trump holds court at his club, Vice President-elect JD Vance will attend a reception for Cabinet members and host a dinner in Washington.
On Sunday, the eve of his inauguration, Trump is scheduled to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery before heading to a rally at Capital One Arena in Washington. The rally will be followed by a private dinner.
On Inauguration Day, Trump will start with the traditional prayer service at St. John’s Episcopal Church before heading to the White House for a customary tea with the outgoing president and first lady.
Trump then heads to the Capitol, where his ceremony has been moved indoors as temperatures are set to plummet and make it the coldest Inauguration Day in 40 years. It’s not quite clear how the ceremony will be adapted to the Capitol Rotunda, which holds only 600 people. More than 250,000 guests were ticketed to view the inauguration from around the Capitol grounds.
The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, which is responsible for planning the event, said in a statement that “the vast majority of ticketed guests will not be able to attend the ceremonies in person.”
Eight years ago, Trump’s critics were wrestling with whether to attend his inauguration, contemplating whether to buck long-standing practice and send a signal to the divisive new president. This year, much outspoken resistance to Trump has faded away, though there will be two notable absences: former first lady Michelle Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Neither gave an explanation as to why she was skipping the ceremony.
After Trump takes the oath of office and delivers his inaugural address, there will be a ceremonial farewell to Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. As the new Republican government takes power, Trump will head to a signing ceremony at the Capitol to approve some of his first official acts, followed by a congressional luncheon and review of U.S. troops.
The planned traditional parade down Pennsylvania Avenue has morphed into an indoor event because of the cold, with Trump again planning to speak to his gathered supporters before he heads to the White House for a signing ceremony in the Oval Office. Trump’s arrival in Washington will once again be accompanied by protests and vigils on issues such as abortion, immigration rights and, this time, the Israel-Hamas war, but the feel and the force of those demonstrations were different from the outset of his first term.
The Women’s March, spurred by women outraged over Trump’s win in 2017, drew more than 500,000 people to Washington and millions more in cities around the country, marking one of the largest single-day demonstrations in U.S. history.
The march returned Saturday, rebranded as the People’s March, with organizers saying their focus will be less on Trump and more on broader goals around women’s and reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, immigration, climate and democracy. It drew far fewer than eight years ago.
