New Year’s is being celebrated across world – including in London, where the fireworks are set to go ahead despite bad weather forcing the cancellations of events across the UK.

Millions of Britons fear a New Year’s Eve washout as storms heading south look set to wreak havoc, with weather warnings issued for nearly every part of the country.

Heavy rain, snowstorms, 70 mph gales and even landslides are causing travel disruption, flooding and celebration cancellations, with Edinburgh’s Hogmanay outdoor events already scrapped.

However, while London’s City Hall has said it is “closely monitoring” the weather, Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has confirmed the capital’s fireworks display will go ahead. Despite the 41mph gusts forecast, thousands are expected to flock to Big Ben and millions more to watch the live broadcast from around the world.

Network Rail Scotland said they were dealing with 15 flooding incidents on the Far North Line and a landslip near Brora on 31 December, while rising river levels have led to closures of the Dalguise viaduct lines and the Highland Main Line remains closed in Kingussie.

“Do not travel” warnings have been issued as rivers are feared to burst their banks in other areas of Scotland.

Three days of weather warnings are in place across the country, with heavy rain set to turn to blusters of snow showers on Wednesday, which is forecast to continue through the night in Scotland.

    Happy New Year!

It is officially 2025 in the UK.

Fireworks can be heard exploding across the country as Big Ben chimes midnight.

Heavy rain to lash parts of UK to kick off 2025

Heavy rain will lash parts of the UK to begin 2025 after New Year’s Eve celebrations across the country were cancelled.

Many faced heavy rain, strong winds and even snow in some parts, leading to widespread disruption on Tuesday.

An amber warning for heavy rain has been put in place across parts of North-West England until 9am on New Year’s Day.

The Met Office warning stretches from Settle in the Yorkshire Dales across to Preston and down to parts of the Peak District.

The warning states that heavy rain is “likely to lead to disruption including flooding in some locations” with a chance some places could see more than 10cm of rain.

Winds of up to 60mph are forecast across much of England and Wales all day on Wednesday, with gusts of 75mph likely around coastal areas and hills, according to the Met Office.

Rain turning to snow on New Year’s Day is likely to cause travel disruption, particularly on roads and railways across Grampian, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, and the Highlands & Eilean Siar, the Met Office said.

Starmer: 2025 a chance to rediscover the great nation that we are

The UK faces a “year of rebuilding” while also “rediscovering the great nation that we are” in 2025, according to Sir Keir Starmer.

The Prime Minister used his first new year’s message since entering Downing Street to reflect on a “year of change” in 2024, although joked this did not extend to football as the England men’s team experienced “another agonisingly close shave” by losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

He added his Labour administration has begun the “work of change” since winning the general election in July and pointed to an increase in the minimum wage, clean energy projects and NHS investment as examples.

Hogmanay tourists having to quickly find alternatives to cancelled fireworks

With hours to go before the end of 2024, tourists who travelled to Edinburgh in the hope of experiencing the Hogmanay fireworks have described having to quickly find other ways to celebrate the new year.

The street party and fireworks display over Edinburgh Castle were cancelled on Monday afternoon due to a Met Office yellow weather warning, which at the time covered most of Scotland throughout Hogmanay before the warning area was cut back to the Highlands and Moray.

Elisa Dorris, who is originally from Spain but now lives in Dublin, flew to Edinburgh with friends in order to see the fireworks.

The 23-year-old shop assistant described having to ask around for suggestions as to what she and her friends can do to celebrate the new year.

She said: “We are very disappointed … but we will try to have fun here in the Christmas market. We will try our best to have fun this night.

“So we have been asking people about what we can do, and they say that they have pubs in Victoria Street, and the people are going to go out, because it’s a lot of people in the same situation. So we think that we are going to do that, stay in the streets, in the pubs.”

David Liew, a 59-year-old lawyer from Singapore who came to Edinburgh for New Year during a three-week holiday in the UK, said: “We’ll just walk around, take some pictures and hopefully make the best use of our time.”

Mr Liew added that he could understand the decision to call off the fireworks, but said they should be put back on now that the weather had turned out better than expected.

“We are pretty disappointed. We were just informed, I think, this morning, but I think it’s due to the weather. But when I look around now, I think the weather is fine, and I think the celebrations should resume.”

Dazzling New Year’s Eve fireworks come with a terrible environmental price

Fireworks have been lit in celebration for thousands of years, and this New Year’s Eve is no different.

But, while Americans and millions around the world ring in the new year with dazzling displays of multi-colored chemical reactions, they may not realize their damaging impact on their environment and ecosystems.

“Looking at the composition of these particles and which ones may be the most toxic to human health, fireworks are in the mix with particles from coal-fired power plants, which appear to be the worst,” Terry Gordon, a professor at New York University, told the publication Delaware Currents last July.

Whether it’s dancing in the streets, sharing a toast with loved ones, or watching the iconic ball drop in Times Square, people are finding creative ways to celebrate the end of a challenging year and the promise of a fresh start.

In London, the annual fireworks display promises to be a spectacular show, with thousands of people gathering along the Thames River to catch a glimpse of the dazzling lights and colors that will illuminate the sky. • Here’s where the weather could disrupt New Year’s Eve celebrations

Here’s where the weather could disrupt New Year’s Eve celebrations

    CNN
     —

It’s no surprise that a year filled with extreme weather won’t be going out quietly with stormy conditions on the way for parts of the United States on New Year’s Eve, including some of the most populated areas of the Northeast.

A quick-moving storm will race into the East on Tuesday and deliver potentially drenching rain anywhere from the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast as the final hours of 2024 tick away.

It’ll be quite wet for New York City’s iconic New Year’s Eve celebrations. Rain will move into the city early Tuesday evening and could be heavy at times, especially from 8 p.m. to midnight when an estimated 1 million people pack into Times Square.

The final day of 2024 will feel more like mid-November in the city with a high temperature in the low 50s Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures will remain steady throughout the evening and will be around 50 degrees leading up to midnight.

A few thunderstorms are possible anywhere from coastal North Carolina to southern New England within this larger area of rain, including in New York City, Philadelphia and Boston. These storms aren’t expected to become severe, but any lightning strikes could be dangerous for people celebrating the turn to 2025 outdoors.

While the East mainly encounters rain in the last hours of 2024, parts of the Midwest are in for a sloppy New Year’s Eve as some snow mixes with rain at times.

Chicago will start the day with rain but snowflakes will start to mix in later in the afternoon and this wintry mix will continue until around midnight. Similar conditions will unfold in Detroit.

Powerful winds are roaring over the Rockies on Monday but much of the Plains and West will end up dry and calmer on Tuesday. Parts of California will be the exception and have to contend with a new batch of Santa Ana winds.

Any celebratory fireworks or other sparks in Southern California on Tuesday or Wednesday could easily set off new blazes that potentially exhibit “extreme fire behavior” in very dry and breezy areas, the National Weather Service in Los Angeles warned.

This Santa Ana wind event will peak in strength late Tuesday into early Wednesday and deliver widespread wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph, with isolated gusts to 55 mph in parts of Southern California.

These winds – along with plenty of dry air – mean level 1 of 3 fire weather conditions are in place Tuesday from Santa Barbara to parts of the Los Angeles basin, including the Santa Monica Mountains, the San Fernando Valley and portions of the San Gabriel Mountains, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Santa Ana winds drove the explosive Franklin Fire that forced more than 20,000 people from their homes in the Malibu area earlier this month.

As we approach New Year’s Eve, many people are eagerly making plans to ring in the new year with friends and loved ones. However, the weather forecast may have other ideas. As we all know, Mother Nature can be unpredictable, and some regions may be facing potential disruptions to their New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Here are a few areas where the weather could put a damper on festivities:

    1. Snowstorms: In regions where snow is common during this time of year, a snowstorm could make travel difficult and dangerous. This could impact those planning to attend outdoor events or parties, as well as those hoping to travel to see fireworks displays.

    2. Heavy rain: For areas experiencing heavy rain, outdoor events may need to be canceled or moved indoors. This could affect planned fireworks shows, outdoor concerts, or street parties.

    3. High winds: Strong winds can also pose a threat to outdoor celebrations, especially those involving fireworks. In extreme cases, high winds could lead to power outages or damage to property.

    4. Cold temperatures: In some regions, frigid temperatures could make outdoor celebrations unbearable for partygoers. This could lead to lower turnout at events and impact businesses relying on New Year’s Eve crowds.

While we can’t control the weather, it’s important to stay informed and prepared for any potential disruptions to your New Year’s Eve plans. Make sure to check the forecast regularly and have a backup plan in place in case of inclement weather. Stay safe, stay warm, and have a happy New Year!

Nicole Kidman’s oldest and youngest daughters mark special celebrations days apart

Nicole Kidman‘s family have a lot to celebrate in December alongside Christmas!

The Hollywood star’s oldest daughter, Bella Cruise, turned 32 on December 22, and then less than a week later, her youngest daughter Faith Margaret Urban turned 14 on December 28.

While she keeps her relationship with her oldest two children completely out of the spotlight, Bella has occasionally liked her famous mom’s posts on social media, and follows her, along with her younger sister Sunday, who opened her own Instagram account earlier this year.

Nicole occasionally shares photos of her youngest daughters on Instagram on special occasions, and this year both Sunday and Faith have stepped out into the spotlight.

The sisters made their red carpet debut back in April as they attended the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award which honored their mom.

Sunday has attended several high-profile fashion events with Nicole this year too, and made her runway debut in June at Paris Fashion Week, as she walked in the star-studded Miu Miu show. Faith, meanwhile, joined her mom at the start of December at The Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment 2024.

Nicole has previously opened up about her protective parenting approach when it comes to social media.

During an appearance on Loose Women in 2020 when Sunday was 12, the Babygirl actress had a lot to say against social media.

She told the panel: “‘I won’t let them be on Instagram. I have a 12-year-old right now who is chomping at the bit and wants to get into all of that. It’s just that constant push, pull. I’d say a lot of parents would say the same thing. I think it’s keeping their confidence and their self-esteem intact.”

Nicole and Keith are raising their daughters between Nashville and Australia, and also have homes in LA, NYC and London. At the AFI Life Achievement ceremony in April, Keith gave an incredible insight into his daughters’ upbringing.

He said: “Our two girls, Sunny and Faith, are here tonight. And I get to see Nic being a mom. It’s one of the most beautiful things. She’s so loving.” Keith also told the audienced: “She loves life. I’ve never met anyone who loves life. She also knows the importance of expressing feelings. I wasn’t raised like this so our girls are very lucky to be learning from you baby.”

On their strong unit, he added: “Her and I both come from tight four member family units as well, so we try and do the same with our girls keeping a tight little unit wherever we are. We’ll make homes on film locations all over the world from Bowen, Queensland, Australia when we were filming with Baz out there, to Marrakesh, Morocco.

“And wherever we are, Nic’s always found ways to get our girls into schools, much to their chagrin sometimes. But her thing is, it’s not just about learning, it’s also social, having some friends.”

Nicole Kidman’s oldest and youngest daughters, Isabella and Faith, recently marked special celebrations just days apart, showcasing the bond between the two sisters despite their age difference.

Isabella, who is Kidman’s adopted daughter with ex-husband Tom Cruise, celebrated her 29th birthday on December 22nd. The aspiring artist and photographer has largely stayed out of the spotlight, opting for a more private life away from the Hollywood glamour.

Just a few days later, on December 28th, Kidman’s youngest daughter Faith celebrated her 11th birthday. Faith, who was born via surrogate to Kidman and her husband Keith Urban, is known for her lively personality and love for music, following in her parents’ footsteps.

Despite the 18-year age gap between Isabella and Faith, the two sisters have a close relationship and often spend time together with their famous parents. Kidman has spoken about the joy of having a blended family and the love she has for all of her children, regardless of how they came into her life.

As the two sisters celebrate their birthdays just days apart, it’s clear that family is at the center of Kidman’s life, bringing her joy and fulfillment in both the big moments and the small ones.
