Let’s Talk About the Connor Bedard – Macklin Celebrini Comparisons Thru 41 NHL Games

I decided to do a little digging this morning because I noticed that last night’s Sharks game was the 41st of the season for 2024 No. 1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini. Since there’s this movement on the interwebs to make a case that he’s a better prospect than Connor Bedard, and Celebrini is now officially half-way thru his rookie season, why not compare the two at the 41 game mark of their respective rookie seasons?

During both of their respective rookie seasons, Bedard and Celebrini dealt with injuries before getting to their 41st game in the NHL. Bedard missed seven weeks with his broken jaw in January and early February; Celebrini has missed 12 Sharks games thus far. That’s important to recognize because it levels the playing field to an extent.

Bedard Celebrini
Games 41 41
Goals 16 16
Assisist 20 20
Points 36 36
+ / – -23 -20
TOI 19:06 19:36
SOG 127 138
PPG 1 5
PPP 7 11
GWG 2 4
FO Pct 39.0 48.4

Those numbers are… strikingly similar, aren’t they?

How about the records of the teams they’ve played those rookies seasons on?

  • The Sharks, with a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh last night, are now 15-32-6.
  • The Blackhawks were 15-37-3 after winning the game in which Bedard played his 41st game.

Huh… ain’t that something?

As the NHL season reaches its halfway mark, the comparisons between rookie phenom Connor Bedard and seasoned veteran Macklin Celebrini have been heating up. Both players have been making waves in the league with their exceptional skills and performances, leading many fans and analysts to draw parallels between the two.

Bedard, the 18-year-old sensation who was drafted first overall last year, has been a revelation for his team, showcasing his elite scoring ability and playmaking skills. Celebrini, on the other hand, has been a consistent force on the ice for years, known for his strong defensive play and leadership qualities.

Through 41 NHL games, Bedard has already amassed an impressive point total, solidifying himself as a top contender for the Calder Trophy. Celebrini, meanwhile, has continued to be a steady presence on the blue line, anchoring his team’s defense and contributing offensively as well.

While the comparisons between Bedard and Celebrini are inevitable given their similar playing styles and impact on their respective teams, it’s important to appreciate each player’s unique talents and contributions to their squads. Whether it’s Bedard’s dynamic offensive ability or Celebrini’s steady presence on defense, both players bring a valuable skill set to the table that sets them apart from their peers.

As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how Bedard and Celebrini continue to perform and whether their paths will continue to intersect as they strive for success in the NHL. One thing is for certain: both players are destined for greatness and will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the league for years to come. Let’s keep an eye on their progress and enjoy the show as these two hockey stars light up the ice.

Crosby Impressed by Celebrini, Offers Advice

It takes one to know one.

Sidney Crosby, the 2005 first-overall pick, was effusive in his praise of Macklin Celebrini, the 2024 first-overall pick, before Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins take on Celebrini’s San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Monday night.

“He’s looking like he’s everything everyone anticipated he’d be,” Crosby said.

Crosby spoke about what he can tell about Celebrini, what he saw from Celebrini at a camp two summers ago, and his memories on how to handle being on a struggling team as a teenager.

Crosby’s impressions of the San Jose Sharks’ star rookie:

I think he’s having a great year.

I think just the more he plays, more comfortable he gets, more confidence he gets, and it looks like he’s having a lot of fun and playing good hockey.

He’s going to be a big part of their team from now on. He’s looking like he’s everything everyone anticipated he’d be.

Crosby, on a one-on-one battle that Macklin Celebrini remembered when they played each other in November:

I mean, there’s different reasons or different things that as a young guy you remember, and I guess he values the one-on-one battles and winning those and knows the importance of it.

I think it’s different for everybody, but you can tell that he’s committed to play both sides of the puck, and he cares a lot about being a two-way player, and his skill and everything speaks for itself, but for a young player to be interested in playing on the other side of the puck and want to get better there, that’s something I think any team loves to see.

Crosby, on if he had a moment like that in his career:

I think there’s a lot. I mean, I think my first shift, I had a chance right in the slot, had a chance to score on my first shot, and my first shift, and Martin Brodeur stopped me, and that was my “Welcome to the League” moment. I don’t usually like missing those, but I remember in that moment, I was still pretty happy to be where I was at, being in the NHL, playing against guys that I had grown up watching.

Crosby, on the San Jose Sharks retiring Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau’s jerseys:

So deserving for guys that you know did so much for this organization, for the fan base, how consistent they were, what they meant to the franchise. Yeah, I think that’s a perfect way to honor them. And you know, from playing against them and playing with them, they’re just great guys to be around. They love the game.

Crosby, on being on the ice with Celebrini when he met him in the summer of 2023:

I had met him before [at a camp], so just seeing how he was doing, being able to relate to just all the attention, all the demands, all the things that come with being in his position.

It happens pretty quick, and it’s always a busy time leading up to your first year with a lot of expectations. So I was just more interested to see how he was doing with all that than talking hockey.

Yeah, we skated together.

Just really dynamic, sees the ice well, great shot. I think he just does everything really well.

You look at different guys, maybe their speed sticks out or their shot or their playmaking. I think he’s just really solid in every one of those areas.

Just from watching briefly, I think he’s a guy that really takes a lot of pride in being a two-way guy, too. So he cares about doing good defensively. And I’m sure his coaches like that, like to see that. That always takes a little bit more time, but you can tell he’s really conscious of that.

Crosby’s advice to Celebrini, both teenage No. 1 picks on struggling teams in their rookie season:

I think just enjoy it. I mean, nobody likes losing, no matter if you’re in your first year, your 20th year. The reason he plays is to win games, and that’s what it’s about.

But I think for him, just understanding that process.

He’s a competitive guy. He wants to win every night. There’s nothing wrong with that. That’s how you have to be.

But you just gotta enjoy it, though it’s your first year, and a lot of new things, a lot of great memories from this year.

Sidney Crosby, captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, recently shared his thoughts on the team’s new head athletic therapist, Rick Celebrini. In a press conference, Crosby expressed his admiration for Celebrini’s approach to injury prevention and rehabilitation.

“Celebrini has been a great addition to our team,” Crosby said. “His knowledge and expertise in sports medicine have already made a significant impact on our players’ overall health and performance.”

Crosby went on to offer some advice to younger players on the importance of taking care of their bodies and seeking out the best possible medical care. He emphasized the value of having a strong support system in place, including skilled athletic therapists like Celebrini.

“As athletes, we put our bodies through a lot, so it’s crucial to prioritize recovery and injury prevention,” Crosby explained. “Having someone like Celebrini on our team has been invaluable, and I would encourage all players to seek out experts in sports medicine to help them perform at their best.”

Crosby’s endorsement of Celebrini highlights the importance of having top-notch medical professionals on sports teams to ensure the best possible care for athletes. With his guidance and expertise, Celebrini is sure to continue making a positive impact on the Penguins and their players.

Celebrini, Smith on Origin of Their Viral LeBron-Inspired TikTok

Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith are surprised by how much their TikTok team-up blew up.

On Thursday, Smith dropped a TikTok which re-enacted a viral LeBron James video.

As of Saturday afternoon, it’s at 700K views and counting.

“We were bored. It was an off-day. We played basketball for three hours, so it was fun,” Smith said.

“We started joking around about like have you seen that TikTok? We just decided to try to recreate it,” Celebrini said. “It wasn’t very good.”

Celebrini, of course, is very much connected to basketball. His father Rick Celebrini is the Golden State Warriors’ Director of Sports Medicine and Performance. Because of that connection, the San Jose Sharks’ star rookie is friends with Warriors star Draymond Green.

Celebrini, however, said that he hadn’t heard from Green about his video.

Both did say that their San Jose Sharks teammates found the video “funny”.

The usually competitive young guns, perhaps surprisingly, didn’t have much to say about who was the better basketball player between them.

“Neither of us, really,” Celebrini said.

“We had a bunch of games. We had a massive series,” Smith said.

They also, in the best basketball fashion, deferred to each other as to who was the better performer.

“He had the tougher lines,” Smith said. “I’d say him.”

“Probably him,” Celebrini deflected.

They were also coy about potentially including landlords and San Jose Sharks legends Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau in future collabs. Celebrini lives with Thornton; Smith resides with Marleau.

“I don’t know. Don’t want to take it too far,” Smith laughed. “We’ll see though.”

Anyway, kids will be kids, except when you’re the first-overall pick of the 2024 Draft and the fourth-overall of the 2023 Draft, your TikToks go viral.

“We were just having fun with it,” Celebrini said. “We made it like three weeks ago, like it wasn’t even like yesterday or whatever. Will was like, I might post it, see what happens.”

“Had an idea it was gonna kind of blow up,” Smith said. “I didn’t think it would be that much.”

In a recent interview, TikTok stars Celebrini and Smith opened up about the inspiration behind their viral LeBron James-inspired dance video. The duo explained that they have always been huge fans of the basketball superstar and wanted to pay tribute to his incredible talent and work ethic.

“We both admire LeBron so much, not just for his skills on the court but also for his dedication to his craft and his leadership qualities,” said Celebrini. “We wanted to create a fun and energetic dance video that captured the essence of LeBron’s greatness.”

Smith added, “We spent hours practicing the choreography and perfecting our moves to make sure we did justice to LeBron’s iconic celebrations. It was a labor of love, but seeing the video go viral and receiving so much positive feedback from fans was truly rewarding.”

The video, which features Celebrini and Smith dancing to a remix of LeBron’s famous chalk toss routine, quickly gained millions of views and sparked a trend on TikTok with fans from around the world joining in on the fun.

“We never expected the video to blow up the way it did, but we’re grateful for the support and love from our followers,” said Celebrini. “LeBron has inspired us in so many ways, and we’re just happy to be able to share that inspiration with others through our dance video.”

As for what’s next for Celebrini and Smith, the duo teased that they have more LeBron-inspired content in the works and are excited to continue spreading positivity and joy through their TikTok platform.

Stay tuned for more updates from Celebrini and Smith as they continue to make waves in the world of social media and entertainment!

Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith reenact LeBron’s iconic Instagram live – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith are huge fans of the NBA — and LeBron James.

The Sharks young duo posted a video to Instagram reenacting the hilarious James family video taken underneath a basketball hoop. The original Instagram live clip showed James and his two sons, Bronny and Bryce, taking turns shooting.

The audio from the original clip was overlaid onto the footage of Celebrini and Smith taking turns shooting. Eventually, Smith lays down a vicious dunk, almost bringing the hoop down to the ground, as he mimics James yelling, “On his head, on his head. Ain’t that what they say?”

Smith and Celebrini form the young cornerstone of a San Jose squad looking to return to relevance in the NHL. The two teenagers have reinvigorated the moribund franchise, giving it a much-needed jolt.

Celebrini has more than lived up to the hype after being selected No.1 overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, with 25 points in 25 games played. Smith has 11 points through 29 total games this season.

Still, the two teenagers aren’t taking themselves too seriously, which is a good thing given the sky-high expectations that have been heaped on them as they try to lead the Sharks back to the top of the NHL.
