Celtics play again without injured Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis
Celtics guard Jrue Holiday and center Kristaps Porzingis remained sidelined for Sunday night’s game against the Pacers. It was Holiday’s third consecutive absence due to a shoulder impingement, and Porzingis sat out for the second straight game because of a sprained ankle.
Porzingis suffered the injury in the first half of Boston’s loss to the 76ers on Christmas and did not return for the second.
“He’s getting better every day,” coach Joe Mazzulla said. “He’s working at it. So we’ll just continue to see how he improves.”
Mazzulla said he was unsure how Holiday was injured, and he offered a similarly vague assessment.
“Getting better every day,” Mazzulla said. “And he’ll continue to get better and we’ll kind of see how he is.”
Sam Hauser started against the Pacers for the second consecutive game with Holiday out. Al Horford remained in the starting lineup in place of Porzingis.
Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard returned Sunday after missing Friday’s matchup between the teams due to knee pain. Forwards Aaron Nesmith (ankle) and Obi Toppin (ankle) remained out for Indiana.
Carlisle backs big man
Porzingis has dealt with some nagging injuries during his 1½ seasons with the Celtics, as well as throughout his career. But Pacers coach Rick Carlisle, who coached Porzingis during his 2½ seasons with the Mavericks, made it clear that the absences should not be mistaken for a lack of desire.
“He’s a tough guy,” Carlisle said. “He wants to play. He’s a tremendous practice player, he’s a great worker. When you have a (7-foot-2-inch) body like that, it’s going to present some challenges, especially with the dynamic way he plays. He’s going to move around the court like a guard. But I’ll tell you this, the guy is a competitor. He’s a total team guy, and whenever he has an injury he does everything in his power to get back as quickly as possible.
“I was very surprised when he played in the deciding game [of the NBA Finals] last year. It just seemed like these guys, without him, were probably going to be OK anyway. But that’s just him. He wants to play, he wants to help his team, he wants to be part of the team. I know it meant a lot to him to win a championship, and I’m super happy for him for being able to experience that here.”
Tatum grabs attention
Celtics forward Jayson Tatum entered Sunday averaging a career-high 9.6 rebounds, good for 17th in the NBA. He had reached double digits in rebounds in eight consecutive games, including a pair of 15-rebound performances.
“The way we match up, he finds himself on the [opposing center] a lot, and so he’s down closer to the basket,” Mazzulla said. “But it’s another way for him to assert himself with his ability to rebound. He does a good job of balancing pushing it in transition himself, which he’s been more aggressive there, and finding outlet passes to [a teammate]. So it’s just him asserting himself and doing what we need him to do. And he’s willing to do that. So it’s important that he continues to rebound at a high level really on both ends of the floor.”

The Boston Celtics faced off against the New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks in back-to-back games without their injured stars Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. Despite missing two key players, the Celtics managed to secure victories in both games, showcasing the depth and resilience of their roster. In the absence of Holiday, the Celtics relied on their backcourt duo of Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart to provide scoring and playmaking. Tatum stepped up as the primary scoring option, dropping 30+ points in both games, while Smart facilitated the offense and played lockdown defense on the opposing team’s guards.
Without Porzingis patrolling the paint, the Celtics turned to their big man rotation of Al Horford, Robert Williams, and Grant Williams to anchor the defense and crash the boards. The trio did an excellent job of protecting the rim and controlling the glass, limiting second-chance opportunities for their opponents.
Overall, the Celtics showed that they are a resilient and well-coached team that can adapt to injuries and still compete at a high level. With Holiday and Porzingis expected to return soon, the Celtics look poised to make a strong push in the playoffs and potentially contend for a championship.

The Indiana Pacers and the Boston Celtics will play for the second time in three days at TD Garden. In the first game, Boston blew the Pacers out 142-105. Boston shot 51% from the field and went 23-56 from beyond the arc. There are little-to-no teams that can match Boston when they shoot the way they did. The Pacers couldn’t find their shot all night, only shooting 41% and 28% from three. Jaylen Brown continued to show that he is one of the best two-way players in the NBA. Brown scored 44 points on 66% shooting, and he did this all while picking up Tyrese Haliburton full court for 37 minutes. The Pacers did manage to beat the Celtics back in October of this year, 135-132.
The Celtics and Pacers are two NBA teams that predicate themselves on pace and try to overwhelm their opponent with a flurry of points. The Celtics are currently 3rd in the NBA in offensive rating with a rating of 119.6. The Celtics shoot an absurd amount of three pointers each game. They rank 1st in the NBA with 50.5 three-point attempts per game. In comparison to the rest of the league, 2nd place is the Bulls with 43.6 three-point attempts per game. The Celtics roster is designed to make the three, and they make it at a rate of 36.6%. The Pacers are not far behind the Celtics on offense, ranked 11th with an offensive rating of 115.4. What the Pacers lack in offensive rating, they make up for in pace. Indiana ranks 7th in the NBA in pace played with a score of 100.78. The fast-paced offense has led to an average of 114.4 points per game. Usually, I like for the team that just got blown out to come back with a better effort in game two of a back-to-back, but with how many threes the Celtics take, they can be a hard team to predict. Instead, I like for the Pacers to lean into what they know best and to have a better offensive outing tonight.

The Indiana Pacers are set to take on the Boston Celtics in what promises to be an exciting matchup. Both teams are coming off strong performances and will be looking to secure a crucial win in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers have been playing solid basketball as of late, with key players such as Domantas Sabonis and Malcolm Brogdon leading the charge. They will be looking to continue their winning streak and improve their position in the standings.
On the other hand, the Celtics are also a formidable opponent, with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown leading the way. Despite some recent struggles, the Celtics have the talent and depth to compete with the best teams in the league.
In terms of odds, the Celtics are currently favored to win this matchup. However, the Pacers have shown that they can compete with top teams and should not be underestimated.
In terms of predictions, this game could go either way. Both teams have the potential to come out on top, but it may ultimately come down to which team can execute their game plan more effectively.
As for picks, I would lean towards the Celtics to come away with the win in a close game. However, the Pacers are more than capable of pulling off the upset, so it should be an exciting matchup to watch.

You do not need to be a fan of the Boston Celtics to be dialed in to the meteoric rise of backup Boston combo guard Payton Pritchard this season. Coming out of the relative obscurity of the Celtics’ deep rotation (so deep in fact, it was not all that long ago the West Linn, Oregon native was pushing for a trade to a team with more playing time), Pritchard now finds himself at the front of the race for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award.
He might even have a shot to win the league’s Most Improved Player award for the season as well, and fans of opposing fan bases are taking note as their favorite team’s defenses panic when he is on the court.

#Payton #Pritchard #NBA #CelticsWith injuries to starters, Mazzulla highlights Celtics’ ‘bench identity’
Celtics
“I obviously want to be fully healthy as long as we can, but the times that we’re not is preparing us for the unknowns of the rest of the season and the playoffs.”
Al Horford and Payton Pritchard continue to play a crucial role as bench players for the Celtics this season. Barry Chin/Globe Staff The Celtics have been tested in December.
Between playing many games over different weeks and seeing injuries to its starting five, Boston has looked to the bench for support a lot this month.
In December alone, Jayson Tatum has dealt with a knee issue, Derrick White has popped up on the injury report with a hamstring ailment, while Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis are on the mend from shoulder and ankle injuries, respectively. Holiday and Porzingis both missed Friday’s important clash against the Pacers.
Before the game, head coach Joe Mazzulla spoke at length about the importance of the Celtics’ “bench identity” and how that unit need to be ready when their name is inevitably called.
“I think that’s a huge key,” Mazzulla said, “is developing not the bench, but the bench identity to where being ready to play at any time, being ready versus a certain matchup, you get into a certain situation where one guy may be a perfect fit for a playoff series, and the next day it may be somebody completely different.”
Boston’s bench is one of its strong suits, which played a role in its championship-winning season earlier this year. Payton Pritchard, for example, has a chance of being named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year. Having played in every game this season entering Friday and averaging 15.3 points per game with a 46.7 field goal percentage, there’s no question that he would be a starter on most other teams in the league.
Neemias Queta is another player who’s seen more minutes off the bench this season than last and has made an impact at times. Sam Hauser also continues to be a go-to bench player for Mazzulla this season, who started on Friday in place of Holiday.
Al Horford has played off the bench since the team’s addition of Porzingis last summer. He’s unsurprisingly excelled in that role across 23 contests this season, averaging nine points and one block per game.
With Porzingis sidelined once more, Horford will continue see more time on the court.
Mazzulla went on to explain that while their bench is a strength now, in the first half of the season, he aspires that the group continues to improve in later months.
“Building the habits and the things that go into developing different guys for different identities I think is really important over the course of a season because you don’t get to pick your part, you don’t get to pick your matchup, you don’t get to pick the strengths and weaknesses of who your opponent is, and you have to be ready to face those on,” Mazzulla said. “I enjoy those moments. I obviously want to be fully healthy as long as we can, but the times that we’re not is preparing us for the unknowns of the rest of the season and the playoffs.”
As the Celtics look to snap their first two-game losing streak of the 2024-25 season on Friday, Mazzulla certainly hopes his team’s “bench identity” isn’t lost, especially as the new year approaches.

With injuries to multiple starters, including All-Star Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart, the Boston Celtics have been forced to rely on their bench players to step up and fill the void. Interim head coach Joe Mazzulla has been impressed with how the bench unit has embraced their roles and shown resilience in the face of adversity.Mazzulla highlighted the team’s ‘bench identity’ in a recent press conference, praising the depth and versatility of the reserves. Players like Payton Pritchard, Grant Williams, and Romeo Langford have all played crucial roles in keeping the Celtics competitive during this challenging stretch.
Despite the setbacks, Mazzulla remains optimistic about the team’s ability to weather the storm and continue to compete at a high level. He emphasized the importance of staying focused and staying true to their identity as a team that values hard work, grit, and determination.
As the Celtics look to navigate through this difficult period, Mazzulla’s emphasis on the ‘bench identity’ will be key in keeping the team united and motivated. With the support of their depth players, the Celtics are confident that they can overcome their injuries and emerge stronger on the other side.

#injuries #starters #Mazzulla #highlights #Celtics #bench #identitySixers’ Caleb Martin torments Boston Celtics again with seven threes
BOSTON — Caleb Martin is unaware of why he’s so successful against the Boston Celtics.
“I think they’re obviously a really good team, really well coached,” the 76ers forward said after his team’s 118-114 Christmas Day victory over the Celtics at TD Garden.
“I think I’ve always for the most part tried to rise to the occasion and play at the level that the game is being played,” he added, “and they make you rise a level. So it’s a credit to them.”
The Celtics are probably in no mood to pat themselves on the back.

Martin, once again, torched Boston. This time, it came during his first game against them as a Sixer. The forward scored 23 points on 8-for-11 shooting — including a career-high seven three-pointers.
“He’s playing against Boston,” center Joel Embiid said. “He hates them as much as I do. I guess I’ll take it. Nah, but he was great. I like when he’s not thinking. Tonight, he was just not thinking about it. Every time he had the ball, shoot or drive, obviously, he made his shots. We need him to keep doing that and building that confidence.”
The Sixers signed Martin in July, fully aware of his success against the Celtics.
As a member of the Miami Heat, Martin became the breakout star of the 2023 Eastern Conference finals against the Celtics. He averaged 19.3 points on 60% shooting and capped that series by scoring a playoff career-high 26 points in Game 7 in Boston to oust the favored Celtics and earn the Heat a trip to the NBA Finals.
And that wasn’t an isolated incident for the modern version of the “Boston Strangler.”
Over the past two seasons, Martin averaged 13.6 points on 50% shooting — including 44% on three-pointers — against the Celtics during the regular season and playoffs. It marked his best scoring average against an Eastern Conference foe during that span.
“They’ve been calling me that since 2022-23,” Martin said of the modern-day Boston Strangler nickname.
The most notable Boston Strangler was former Sixers guard Andrew Toney in the 1980s. Before him, it was former Sixers guard Lloyd Free in the 1970s.
» READ MORE: How Andrew Toney became the ‘Boston Strangler
Toney (in 1982) and Free (in 1977) dominated the Celtics in decisive Game 7s in the playoffs.
“Any time you can develop some type of nickname in this league, obviously, that means people notice and you are doing the right thing,” Martin said. “And sometimes other people from that team don’t like you, which is always a good feeling. It’s fun.”
But on Christmas, it was more that the Celtics didn’t bother to guard him. They were more focused on defending the Sixers’ star players.
“That was the game plan,” Boston guard Jaylen Brown said. “We stick to the game plan. We trusted the game plan. Martin hit seven threes, and that’s tough and he’d done [it] before to us in the past.
“But going into it, we felt comfortable with letting him take all them shots and he just knocked them down.”
Knocking them down was an understatement.
Martin didn’t attempt a shot in the first quarter. But he drained both of his three-point attempts in the second quarter. After going 1-for-3 in the third, Martin was 4-for-4 from deep in the fourth.
“That’s what Caleb does,” Tyrese Maxey said. “That’s the Undertaker that we know. Shout-out to Caleb.”
In a stunning display of shooting prowess, Sixers’ Caleb Martin torments Boston Celtics once again with seven threes in a single game. Martin’s hot hand proved to be too much for the Celtics to handle, as he lit up the scoreboard and led the Sixers to a decisive victory. This is not the first time Martin has given the Celtics trouble, as he has consistently been a thorn in their side with his sharpshooting abilities. His ability to knock down shots from beyond the arc has made him a key player for the Sixers, and a nightmare for opposing teams like the Celtics.
With this latest performance, Martin has solidified himself as a player to watch out for in future matchups against the Celtics. His deadly accuracy from long range makes him a dangerous threat on the court, and a valuable asset for the Sixers as they continue their push towards the playoffs.
Fans of the Sixers can only hope that Martin’s hot streak continues, as he has proven to be a key factor in the team’s success. With his ability to light it up from downtown, Martin has become a player that opposing teams must game plan for, and a player that Celtics fans dread seeing on the court.

Joel Embiid describes how much Caleb Martin hates the Celtics
Celtics
“He hates them as much as I do, so I guess I’ll take it”
Joel Embiid Photo by Brian Fluharty/Getty Images Caleb Martin has been a thorn in the Celtics’ side for a while, and his performance on Wednesday evening helped the 76ers hand the Celtics a 118-114 Christmas Day defeat.
The 6-foot-5 guard drilled seven threes, many of them open, as Philadelphia withstood Boston’s comeback attempt and hung on for a 118-114 win.
“That was the gameplan. So we [just] stuck to the gameplan, we trusted the gameplan,” Jaylen Brown said. “Martin hit, what seven threes tonight? That’s tough. He’s done that before to us in the past, but going into it we felt comfortable letting him take all them shots and he knocked them down tonight.”
Before he joined the Sixers, Martin was a key member of the 2023 Miami Heat that eliminated the Celtics in seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals. Martin shot 60 percent from the field that series, including 48.9 percent from 3-point range.
His 19.3 points per game were second behind Jimmy Butler for Miami that series.
“He’s playing against Boston,” Embiid said with a shrug while asked about Martin’s career-high seven 3-pointers on Christmas. “He hates them as much as I do, so I guess I’ll take it. No, but it was great. I like when he’s not thinking about it and tonight, he was just not thinking about it. Seeing every time he has the ball, shoot or drive and we see he made his shots. We need him to keep doing that and keep building our confidence.”
Tyrese Maxey led all scorers with a 33-point, 12-assist double-double. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said the Celtics could have used better effort on the defensive end to slow Maxey down. It’s about taking away some of his tendencies and taking pride in the individual challenge of guarding him, which will result in better team defense, he said.
When asked about the decision to let Martin shoot despite knowing his history of heating up against the Celtics, Mazzulla answered with a question about help defense.
“Who do you help off of? He made big-time shots but if you want to slow Maxey and Embiid down you have to bring the game to someone. You have to have good shift activity. Out of the nine threes he shot, I’ll have to go back and look at how many were contested.
“But that’s the catch-22,” Mazzulla added. “Good teams who are shooting the ball well, they put you in a tough spot. That’s why it’s important to take away the tendencies on a guy’s right-hand drive, take away the transition, don’t turn the ball over, get good shots. So when you’re in the situation where you’re not taking care of those details it doesn’t make up for the margin for error and he made shots.”
