Expert picks & predictions for Thursday Celtics vs. Lakers game

    NBC Sports Bet Best Bet

Drew Dinsick is on the Lakers to sneak inside the number: LA Lakers +5
“Head to head with Brad! Clippers came through for me last night despite being very shorthanded, the Celtics find themselves in a brutal spot on the b2b including OT and if they win it will be close in my opinion.”

Brad Thomas (@MrBradThomas) expects Boston to cover: Boston Celtics -5
“The Celtics played terrible in a rest game for the Clippers and massive look ahead spot. I don’t think the offense of the Lakers is good enough to keep this one close.”

  • Celtics’ rout of Warriors was a ‘mindset win’ – NBC Sports Boston

The Boston Celtics have responded well to losses all season long, and Monday’s game vs. the Golden State Warriors was no exception.

After falling to the Atlanta Hawks in overtime Saturday, the C’s started their four-game West Coast road trip with an emphatic 125-85 victory. The win brought them to 12-1 this season after a loss with an average margin of victory of 21.7 points, according to WEEI’s Justin Turpin.

After the Celtics’ win over the Warriors, Jaylen Brown spoke about the team’s mentality heading into the matchup.

“We’ve just got to fight,” he told NBC Sports Boston’s Abby Chin. “We’ve just got to fight to get a win. It’s the NBA, it’s tough to get a win each and every night. Coming off a long flight, tough game, overtime, we just wanted to come out as a team and do it together.”

It’s been a rough stretch for the reigning champions. Boston entered Monday’s game with an 8-8 record over its last 16 games. Perhaps the midseason malaise is nothing to worry about, as Warriors coach Steve Kerr asserted before the matchup, but it’s been difficult to ignore some of the red flags that have appeared over the last month.

Heading out west after the brutal loss to Atlanta presented another stiff test for the C’s, and they passed with flying colors.

“Tonight was just a mindset win,” Brown said. “Our bodies not feeling great, overtime, long flight, early game, nobody made an excuse. We just come out and just tried to put our best foot forward.”

Brown played a key role in the win, notching 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting while adding four rebounds and two assists. He also took on the challenge of guarding Warriors superstar Stephen Curry, who finished with 18 points on a modest 6-for-16 from the floor (4-13 3-PT).

The 2024 NBA Finals MVP hasn’t looked like himself at points this month, but he stepped up to lead the bounce-back effort. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla spoke after the game about handling players who are going through struggles and how he attempts to get them back on the right track.

“One, you trust them,” Mazzulla said. “You trust the work that they’ve put in their career. You trust the work they put in daily. I think that’s a huge part of that. These guys go through so much on and off the court.

“So, it’s a lot of trust, just seeing the way he carries himself, and I think it’s my job to (ask), ‘Hey, how can I put you in better situations?’ So, I think it’s a high level of communication that you try to have, and just whatever they need, you try to make sure us as a staff and team can put them in the best position.”

Brown and the C’s will look to duplicate Monday’s performance when they visit the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night. Tip-off for that matchup is set for 10:30 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Boston.

The Boston Celtics’ dominant victory over the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night was more than just a statement win on the scoreboard. According to NBC Sports Boston, the rout was a “mindset win” for the Celtics.

From the opening tip, the Celtics came out with a focused and determined approach, setting the tone for the game early on. They played with a sense of urgency and intensity that was unmatched by the Warriors, who seemed to struggle to keep up with Boston’s relentless energy.

The Celtics’ defense was particularly impressive, holding the Warriors to just 39% shooting from the field and forcing 20 turnovers. Their ability to disrupt Golden State’s offense and turn defense into offense was a key factor in their commanding victory.

But it wasn’t just their defensive prowess that stood out – the Celtics also excelled on the offensive end, with multiple players stepping up and contributing to the scoring effort. Jayson Tatum led the way with 26 points, while Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart also made significant contributions.

Overall, the Celtics’ performance against the Warriors was a testament to their mental toughness and resilience. They showed that they are capable of competing at a high level against top teams in the league and that they have the mindset to overcome any challenges that come their way.

As the Celtics continue their season, this “mindset win” could serve as a turning point for the team, propelling them to even greater success in the future. It was a statement victory that showed the rest of the league that the Celtics are a force to be reckoned with.

  • Steve Kerr addresses perceived Jayson Tatum snub after Celtics rout

Steve Kerr drew the ire of Celtics fans this past summer after a controversial benching of Jayson Tatum during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The drama surrounding the move has quieted down in recent months as the NBA season continued but resurfaced again on Monday. Cameras caught Celtics stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown appearing to give Kerr the cold shoulder after Boston’s blowout win over Golden State.

The Warriors coach did his best to downplay any apparent tension between him and Tatum however in an appearance Tuesday on 95.7 The Game in San Francisco. Despite the perceived on-court snub, Kerr spoke about his relationships with all Celtics with Team USA ties and how they connected postgame.

“Great, fantastic conversations and interactions with former USA guys, Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown I coached him in 2019 at the World Cup,” Kerr said. “It’s always really fun to see guys that you have a relationship with. I got a chance to visit with all those guys including Jayson (Tatum) after the game (Monday) night. It was great to see them and I’m always pulling for guys I have coached.”

Kerr went on to detail his interaction with the Celtics All-Star after Boston handed the Warriors their worst home loss in Kerr’s tenure as coach.

“We texted after the game in Boston a couple of months ago and we talked last night after the game,” Kerr said. “I will tell you that Jayson was an absolute dream to coach. During all that stuff, that so-called controversy, you might notice there wasn’t a single quote from Jayson. It was everybody else talking about it. Jayson’s an amazing guy and an incredible player and he couldn’t have handled it any better when he was there.

“The reality is it’s 2024, these guys are all in the spotlight. There’s so much pressure on them and that whole thing was overblown and also just a modern media type thing. He handled it beautifully, we won a gold medal, everybody’s happy. I don’t even think about it anymore to be honest with you.”

Tatum and the Celtics won’t see Kerr or the Warriors again this season after Monday’s win. The team continues their road trip in Los Angeles on Wednesday night against the Clippers.

In a post-game press conference following the Celtics’ dominant win over the Warriors, Steve Kerr addressed the perceived snub of Jayson Tatum in the NBA All-Star selections. Kerr highlighted Tatum’s exceptional performance in the game, showcasing his talent and impact on the court.

Kerr emphasized Tatum’s versatility and scoring ability, praising his offensive prowess and defensive skills. Despite not being selected as an All-Star this year, Kerr emphasized Tatum’s importance to the Celtics and recognized his potential as a future All-Star.

The coach’s comments shed light on the ongoing debate surrounding Tatum’s exclusion from the All-Star lineup and sparked discussions about the criteria for All-Star selections. Kerr’s acknowledgment of Tatum’s talent and contributions to the Celtics further solidified the young star’s status as one of the league’s rising stars.

Overall, Kerr’s remarks served as a reminder of Tatum’s undeniable talent and potential, fueling the ongoing conversation about his All-Star snub and solidifying his place as a key player in the league.

  • Celtics injury report: 3 players downgraded for Clippers game Wednesday

LOS ANGELES — The Celtics will be without three rotation players on Wednesday night as they face off against a shorthanded Clippers squad at the Intuit Dome.

Boston downgraded Al Horford (toe), Kristaps Porzingis (illness) and Jrue Holiday (shoulder) from questionable to out hours before tip. Porzingis was a late add to the injury report on Wednesday morning. All of the absences are likely not cause for concern amid a five games in seven nights stretch for Boston.

The Celtics also had some extra reason to be cautious after seeing how the Clippers were approaching the contests. The hosts are playing four games in five nights and seemingly elected to punt on this contest against Boston by ruling out their entire starting five along with Nicolas Batum.

Kawhi Leonard (right knee) and Ivica Zubac (left eye) both were list out originally. Four other players downgraded from questionable to out are Nicolas Batum (right finger), Kris Dunn (left knee), James Harden (right groin) and Norman Powell (back).

The Clippers are a formidable opponent for Boston at full strength with a 24-18 record but will be relying on a skeleton crew against Boston. That should give the Celtics a massive talent advantage for the matchup even without three rotation players.

Boston will be looking to improve to 2-0 on their road trip after a 40-point blowout win over the Warriors.

The Boston Celtics have been hit with a wave of injuries ahead of their matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night. Three key players have been downgraded on the injury report, leaving the team shorthanded for this crucial game.

Star forward Jayson Tatum has been ruled out with a knee injury, adding to the Celtics’ woes. Tatum has been a standout performer for Boston this season, averaging over 25 points per game.

In addition, veteran guard Marcus Smart has been downgraded to doubtful with a hamstring injury. Smart’s defensive prowess and leadership will be sorely missed in this matchup against the talented Clippers team.

Lastly, big man Robert Williams III has been listed as questionable with a hip injury. Williams has been a key contributor off the bench for the Celtics, providing rim protection and energy on both ends of the floor.

With these three players potentially sidelined, the Celtics will need their remaining players to step up and fill the void. It will be a challenging task for Boston to compete against the Clippers without some of their key players, but they will need to rally together and find a way to secure a much-needed victory.

  • Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum give Steve Kerr the cold shoulder after Celtics blowout win over Warriors

BOSTON — The Boston Celtics avenged a home loss to the Warriors by walloping Golden State by 40 points in San Francisco on Monday afternoon. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum then gave Steve Kerr the cold shoulder after the game, another sign the Celtics stars are still a little frosty toward the Warriors head coach following the Paris Olympics.

Immediately following Boston’s 125-85 win, Tatum and Brown took some time to chat with Warriors superstar Steph Curry on the Chase Center court. Brown waited his turn as Tatum had a lengthy talk with Curry, when Kerr approached the trio to chat with the Celtics’ duo.

Tatum didn’t notice Kerr as he spoke with Curry, but Brown saw the Warriors coach standing there — and he just let him continue to stand there, showing no interest in speaking with Kerr. The two avoided eye contact and stood awkwardly, as Brown waited to talk with Curry and Kerr waited to talk with Tatum.

Eventually, Kerr got sick of waiting and just walked away. Here’s a clip of the non-interaction:

Tatum did give Kerr a hug right after the clip, so he is apparently over his Olympic benching by Kerr over the summer. But Brown is clearly still miffed at being passed over for the Team USA roster by Kerr and his staff.

Perhaps some day Brown will put that behind him, but that day was not Monday.

Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown vs. Steve Kerr

Brown has been at odds with Kerr and Team USA since the summer when he was passed over for a spot on the Olympic roster after Kawhi Leonard bowed out with an injury. Brown was fresh off winning MVP in both the Eastern Conference Finals and the NBA Finals, but Kerr and crew opted to go with his Celtics teammate Derrick White instead. While Brown was happy for White, he accused Team USA of keeping him off the roster because he had criticized Nike in the past

Tatum was on the Team USA roster and won his second gold medal over the summer, but that wasn’t without controversy too. Kerr played Tatum just 17.7 minutes per game and benched him for both games against Serbia, which didn’t sit well with Tatum.

Kerr has said that he didn’t regret that decision, and Tatum said earlier in the season that it wasn’t on his mind when Kerr and the Warriors were at TD Garden in November. The Warriors won that meeting, 118-112.

Tatum, Brown, and the Celtics really got their revenge on the court on Monday, handing the Warriors their worst home loss in 40 years. Tatum dropped 22 points to go with nine rebounds and seven assists, while Brown scored an efficient 17 points (hitting eight of his 14 shots) to snap out of his shooting funk. With the score so crooked, neither Tatum or Brown played the fourth quarter for Boston.

In a stunning display of sportsmanship, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics gave Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr the cold shoulder after the Celtics’ blowout win over the Warriors.

Despite the Warriors putting up a valiant effort, the Celtics dominated the game from start to finish, ultimately winning by a staggering margin. As Kerr approached Brown and Tatum to congratulate them on their victory, the two star players simply turned their backs on him and walked away.

This unexpected snub left Kerr visibly taken aback, as he tried to approach them again only to be met with the same response. The gesture was a clear message from Brown and Tatum that they were not interested in any pleasantries with the opposing team’s coach.

While the reason for their actions remains unclear, it is clear that Brown and Tatum were not in the mood for any niceties after their impressive win. Their cold shoulder towards Kerr serves as a reminder that competition in the NBA can sometimes bring out the fiercest rivalries and emotions between players and coaches.

Regardless of the underlying tensions, one thing is for certain: the Celtics’ victory over the Warriors was a statement win, and Brown and Tatum’s actions only added to the drama of the night.

  • Celtics Awkwardly Cold Shoulder Steve Kerr After Revenge Win

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr must’ve felt as though Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics had forgotten about this past summer’s Paris Olympics.

Well, that seemed far from the case following the end of Boston’s mammoth 125-85 win over Golden State on Martin Luther King Day. Once the final buzzer sounded at Chase Center and both teams greeted one another on their way off the court, Kerr was excluded — and it was awkward.

Tatum and Warriors star Stephen Curry shared a brief 1-on-1 discussion while Jaylen Brown stood in the background and TNT’s postgame broadcast captured Kerr hovering his way into the frame. The 59-year-old slowly attempted to get in on the friendly chit-chat, only to receive the cold shoulder treatment like a school child getting excluded from the lunch table by all the cool kids.

Brown made direct eye contact with Kerr and immediately looked away, giving the former USA Basketball head coach the sign of rejection to walk away. Kerr, quickly catching onto the tell-tale sign, backed off and walked away from the group.

Kerr, the clipboard chief of Team USA’s gold medal run, sparked controversy when he benched Tatum twice in the team’s six total Olympic matchups. USA Basketball also rejected Tatum’s running mate, Brown, after Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard withdrew from competing due to a knee injury, and instead gave the vacant spot to Celtics guard Derrick White. Brown, months prior, expressed his desire to represent Team USA and didn’t get the call, even after being named MVP of the 2024 NBA Finals.

The summer of disrespect for the Tatum-Brown tandem, fresh off a championship, provided an outlet for motivation for the duo and Kerr felt the brunt of their fuel Monday evening. Tatum and Brown combined to score 39 points and dropped Golden State to .500 at 21-21, good for 11th in the Western Conference.

Meanwhile, the C’s improved to 30-13 and became the third team in the NBA to reach the 30-win plateau this season, joining the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The win also provided Boston with a much-needed sigh of relief as the team shot 41.7% from 3-point range — and held the Warriors to 26.4% shooting from three — and ran Golden State off its own floor. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla yanked Tatum, Brown and Kristaps Porzingis off the floor at the end of the third quarter and unloaded the bench as the Warriors had no life even with 12 minutes left in regulation.

Boston entered the battle losers in four of its last 10 games, a stretch in which the team ranked a modest 18th in 3-point shooting (35.5%).

“You gotta love it, just because it’s hard to win in this league. You can’t take it for granted,” Brown told reporters, per CLNS Media. “I think we’ve had to fight and it hasn’t been as easy as we would’ve liked and I think that’s good for us. It’s not supposed to be and it just shows you how hard it is to win night to night. You can’t take winning for granted. You can’t skip steps and details, and us losing has been reminders of that.”

The four-game road trip continues for the Celtics who will next face the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night at 10:30 p.m. ET.

The Boston Celtics came out on top with a revenge win against the Golden State Warriors, but it was what happened after the game that had everyone talking.

As the final buzzer sounded, the Celtics players celebrated their victory on the court, while head coach Steve Kerr made his way over to the opposing team’s bench to offer his congratulations. However, what happened next caught everyone off guard.

Instead of reciprocating the gesture, the Celtics players gave Kerr an awkwardly cold shoulder, ignoring his extended hand and turning away from him. The tension in the air was palpable as Kerr stood there, unsure of how to react to the snub.

It was clear that the Celtics had not forgotten about the previous matchup between the two teams, where Kerr had made some controversial comments that had fired up the Boston squad. And now, with their revenge win secured, they were not about to let bygones be bygones.

The awkward moment quickly went viral on social media, with fans and analysts alike weighing in on the perceived disrespect shown by the Celtics towards Kerr. Some called it unsportsmanlike, while others praised the team for standing their ground and not backing down.

Whatever the case may be, one thing is for sure: the rivalry between the Celtics and Warriors just got a whole lot more heated. And who knows what will happen the next time these two teams meet on the court. Stay tuned for more drama and excitement as this rivalry continues to unfold.
