OpenAI data center blitz is a boon for AI stocks. Cramer says buy Dover

A splashy White House announcement on artificial intelligence investment is a shot in the arm to Nvidia and a host of other portfolio stocks involved in the AI boom. The news OpenAI, Oracle , Softbank and investment fund MGX established a new company — dubbed the Stargate Project — to build AI infrastructure in the U.S. In a press release, ChatGPT creator OpenAI said $100 billion will be deployed “immediately,” with plans calling for a total of $500 billion in investment over the next four years. Construction has already started on the Stargate Project’s first data centers in Texas, Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison said Tuesday evening — appearing alongside OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son and President Donald Trump . The event confirms earlier reporting — dating back to early 2024 — about OpenAI’s ambitions to expand its computing footprint in the U.S. Club holdings Nvidia and Microsoft , which have maintained a close relationship with OpenAI for years, are among the “key initial technology partners” for the Stargate Project, according to a press release . Oracle, Nvidia and OpenAI intend to “closely collaborate to build and operate this computing system,” the release stated. It also read: “OpenAI will continue to increase its consumption of Azure as OpenAI continues its work with Microsoft with this additional compute to train leading models and deliver great products and services.” Investors are upbeat on the news. Shares of Nvidia rose 3.5% on Wednesday to nearly $146 each. That’s on top of a 2.3% gain in Tuesday’s session fueled by afternoon reports of the then-forthcoming AI infrastructure announcement. Microsoft added 3% to roughly $437 a share after a muted session Tuesday. Other Club companies not explicitly called out in the press release or during the White House event were up on the news. Shares of Eaton , an electrical equipment supplier with a significant data center presence, rose 4%, building on a more than 3% gain Tuesday. Strong results from electronic connectors maker Amphenol are boosting sentiment on Eaton, too. Dover , another AI data center play but to a lesser extent, initially climbed Wednesday before fizzling. The stock gained 1.7% in the prior session. Big picture The generative AI gold rush continues as companies scramble to build more computing infrastructure to meet the demands of the nascent technology. Billions upon billions of dollars have already been invested since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 sparked the AI boom. The Stargate Project indicates that there’s plenty more on the way, an encouraging sign for investors in companies that benefit from the aggressive spending. Nvidia, the leading maker of AI chips, is the embodiment of the AI boom. And, in a note to clients, analysts at UBS said the Stargate Project may extend Nvidia’s runway for growth beyond the next calendar year. But there’s so much more inside these data centers than just Nvidia’s graphics processing units, or GPUs, and that’s where the likes of Eaton and Dover come into the fold. Eaton is a big player in the electrical systems for data centers, utilities, and other commercial and industrial markets. A diversified industrial, Dover’s liquid cooling technology for the high-powered servers containing Nvidia GPUs is a key growth area. One question mark surrounding the Stargate Project announcement is the evolving ties between OpenAI and Microsoft, given that the ChatGPT creator and Oracle are forming a cozier relationship through this initiative. In a press release, Microsoft said crucial parts of its OpenAI partnership are still in place through 2030, such as revenue sharing agreements and OpenAI’s application programming interference, or API, being exclusive to Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform. The big change is that Microsoft now has a right of first refusal on new computing capacity for OpenAI. “To further support OpenAI, Microsoft has approved OpenAI’s ability to build additional capacity, primarily for research and training of models,” the company said. Some on Wall Street view this tweak as a positive for Microsoft. Analysts at Wells Fargo said the tech giant can now “take only the highest-margin or most-consistent compute” from OpenAI, with its preference being for the day-to-day use of AI models, known as inference, ahead of the more intensive training process. It also helps Microsoft “offload” some capital expenditures to other companies, Wells Fargo argued. Microsoft already intends to spend $80 billion on AI data centers in its fiscal 2025, which ends in June. “I think the partnership with OpenAI, to us, is a critical partnership. We love it. It’s working. It’s created a lot of value for us, and we plan to just continue forward with it,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a CNBC interview Wednesday from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Bottom line The pledged spending from the Stargate Project, if it comes to pass, should provide tailwinds to our basket of AI stocks over the medium and long term. In the short run, the market reaction offers an opportunity in Dover. “Dover is a terrific stock to own,” Jim said during Wednesday’s Morning Meeting, arguing CEO Richard Tobin can still further reshape its business portfolio to focus on faster-growing areas. With shares turning lower Wednesday, Jim said he would buy the stock. Nvidia has become a “battleground” name of late, Jim said. Still, its leadership position in the AI race is unchanged. While we’re pleased to see Microsoft catch a bid Wednesday, it’s too early to say whether shares have actually found their footing. Takeaway: After Kleber’s injury, Gafford lone remaining healthy center

While all the centers around him unfortunately have been falling like dominoes this season, Daniel Gafford has been that one stabilizing force in the middle for the Dallas Mavericks.

Not only has Gafford (along with guard Spencer Dinwiddie) played in a team-high 44 of the Mavs’ 46 games this season. But Gafford also is averaging a career-best 12.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks, and ranks fourth in the NBA in field goal shooting at a gaudy 69.9 percent.

Overall, it’s the best season of Gafford’s six-year career.

“Honestly, I’m really just motivated right now,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of things that’s going through my head when it comes to the team, and a lot of guys are encouraging me to just keep my head about it.

“I don’t worry about mistakes. I don’t worry about the play before or anything like that. I just have a next-play mentality, and I try to be able to do my job at an elite level and make sure I talk on defense, block shots (and) grab rebounds. Do everything that I was brought here to do at an elite level every night.”

Gafford certainly played at an elite level during Saturday’s 122-107 loss to the Boston Celtics when he poured in 19 points, collected a game-high 15 rebounds (eight offensive) and blocked a game-high three shots in 33 minutes. He also has a flair for flexing his muscles and energizing the crowd, especially when he powers home a slam dunk with authority, as was often the case against the Celtics.

“I just feel like it gives us that extra push,” Gafford said. “If we don’t have enough energy, my energy is going to be able to just push guys. The dunks, the blocked shots, the screaming, that creates momentum for us.

“And throughout the course of the game, that helps us a lot because now we’re not worried about mistakes that we made beforehand. I’m just having fun.”

The fun for Gafford and the Mavs ceased with less than five minutes left in the third quarter when backup center Maxi Kleber fractured his right foot. With centers Dereck Lively II (right ankle stress fracture) and Dwight Powell (right hip strain) already sidelined, Kleber’s injury meant Gafford is the lone healthy center on the roster.

What’s more, Gafford has played 30 or more minutes in four of the past six games since Lively was injured Jan. 14 against Denver. Before that, Gafford had played at least 30 minutes in a game only once this season, Nov. 10 at Denver while Lively sat out with a shoulder injury.

Gafford usually has a tag-team job with Lively at center. But that’s not the case anymore with the injury.

“His minutes have definitely gone up,” coach Jason Kidd said, referring to Gafford. “We’re stretching him. We’re running out of centers.

“It’s a heavy load for him to carry, but he’s one that has to pick up some more minutes here. He can score and rebound as well (and) he’s doing that for us, playing at a high level. But we’re going to have to lean on him, because he’s one of the last of the centers standing.”

As his minutes increase, Gafford doesn’t feel pressured to step up all areas of his game. However, he knows the Mavs are depending on him to hold down the fort in the middle on both ends of the court until the cavalry gets healthy.

And as he has the back of his injured teammates, Gafford tried to put this season in its proper perspective.

“It’s a lot of ups and downs in a season and we get flustered in certain situations, so I had kind of gotten in the mix of a lot of that,” he said. “So, I just took a step back, re-assessed a lot of stuff and just took a deep breath and was like, ‘It’s going to be OK,’ because one bad game does not make a season.

“A couple of bad games don’t make a season. At the end of the day, we’ve got another game after that bad game or after that good game. We just got to keep up.”

IRVING HAS SOLID GAME: While playing a game-high 42 minutes against his former team, Mavs guard Kyrie Irving scored a team-high 22 points, grabbed four rebounds, distributed five assists and blocked a shot on Saturday. Irving has had to take on a bigger role – especially when it comes to initiating the offense — since Luka Dončić has been sidelined after suffering a left calf strain in the Dec. 25 game against Minnesota.

CELTICS A REBOUNDING MACHINE: The Celtics held a slim 51-49 edge over the Mavs in the rebounding department during Saturday’s game. That includes a 17-13 advantage in offensive rebounds. Six members of the Celtics grabbed at least five rebounds: reserves Luke Kornet (nine), Payton Pritchard (nine) and Al Horford (six), and starters Jaylen Brown (eight), Jayson Tatum (six) and Derrick White (five). Horford also had four offensive rebounds, while White, Pritchard and Kornet each had three.

RAINING THREES FOR BOSTON: Boston ended up doing what it does best. And that’s shoot three-pointers. The Celtics jacked up a lot of them (52) on Saturday and a lot of them (20) found their way through the basket. Boston converted just 2-of-10 three-pointers in the first quarter, then added 7-of-15 shots from downtown in the second quarter. That trend continued when the Celtics nailed 8-of-18 triples in the third quarter and wound up making 3-of-9 three-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Former Indiana basketball center Kel’el Ware is the favorite to win NBA Rookie of the Year

Former Indiana basketball standout Kel’el Ware wasn’t on many minds regarding the NBA Rookie of the Year award at the beginning of the season.

The Miami Heat center is now. According to BetMGM, Ware currently has the best odds to win the award (+150). Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey, the two-time national player of the year at Purdue, sits in fifth at +2200.

Ware, who spent one season at IU, averages 8.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1 block per game. In the last three games, Ware has scored at least 20 points, grabbed at least eight rebounds and blocked two shots per contest.

According to Vegas Insider, Ware opened the season at +5000. Ware was drafted 15th overall by the Heat in June.
