Administration: Vanderbilt dedicates brand-new basketball facility, Huber Center
Vanderbilt Athletics dedicated the Huber Center, a brand-new basketball facility for Vanderbilt’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams, on Jan. 24, 2025. Chancellor Daniel Diermeier, athletics director Candice Storey Lee, head coaches Mark Byington and Shea Ralph and primary donors George and Cathy Huber all spoke at the event.

The Huber Center represents a key milestone for Vandy United — it is the first non-renovation project completed as part of the campaign, which began in 2021.

“We launched Vandy United to reimagine the future of Vanderbilt Athletics and hold ourselves to the standard of excellence that guides us always,” Diermeier said. “The values of our coaches and student-athletes champion the values we hold dear at Vanderbilt; hard work and courage, continual growth, equal measures of challenge and support and selflessly coming together in pursuit of a greater common purpose.”

The Chancellor couldn’t resist a playful jab at Vanderbilt’s academic and athletic rivals.

“As I like to say at Vanderbilt, we beat Harvard during the week and Tennessee on the weekends,” Diermeier said.

Lee spoke afterward, echoing similar sentiments. She offered a special thanks to the Huber family for their contributions to the building’s creation.

“For every day we’ve been on this journey that we began nearly five years ago, we proclaimed the highest aspirations for Vanderbilt Athletics, and then set out to do what was necessary to bring that vision to life,” Lee said. “We would not have this beautiful building without the generous support of George and Cathy Huber.”

Lee expressed her excitement about the combined charm of the Huber Center and the fabled Memorial Gymnasium.

“Now we have the best of both worlds. We have a legendary, quirky, historic gym that gives us a home-court advantage like no other in the country,” Lee said. “[And] we have the best-equipped, uniquely-placed and visually-striking practice facility in America.”

The Hubers spoke next, with George Huber emphasizing his family’s love for Vanderbilt, which came from their son’s attendance at the university.

“When [Diermeier] and our truly amazing athletic director Candice Lee — who I’m fortunate to call a very good friend of mine — [asked] me to meet and see whether Cathy and I would be willing to give money to help with this, it was really easy to say yes.”

The dedication concluded with words from both of Vanderbilt’s basketball coaches. Ralph started.

“There’s a clear vision to the relentless commitment to maximizing our potential as human beings [at Vanderbilt],” Ralph said. “For me, that allows me to create this opportunity that I don’t think our student-athletes could experience anywhere else in the world.”

Byington, who is in the midst of leading Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball to its best season since the 200s, echoed a similar sentiment.

“We got in [the Huber Center] around mid-December, still with construction, but we were just so excited to get in here,” Byington said. “I might have broken some codes [before then] coming in here, checking every day on construction without a hard hat, but I just couldn’t wait to get in here.”

The facility houses the men’s practice court and offices on the first floor and the women’s on the third. The second level of the building has a weight room, athletic training center and other shared amenities.

The first and third floors are mirror images, with a few exceptions. Byington’s office looks out over FirstBank Stadium while Ralph’s office overlooks the women’s practice court, allowing her to watch her team at all times. Both teams’ locker rooms have ping pong and pool tables, arcade games and pop-a-shots. Both locker rooms also have a film study room attached to them.

The second floor’s weight room is the “nicest” Byington has ever seen. It features a large variety of Vanderbilt Basketball branded equipment as well as a miniature turf field and a basketball hoop.

Next door to the athletic training room is the sports medicine room. However, past the expected massage tables and exam rooms is the hydrotherapy suite, which houses a water treadmill, multiple heating/cooling tubs and a sensory deprivation pod.

Vanderbilt University has officially opened the doors to its state-of-the-art basketball facility, the Huber Center. This brand-new facility is a game-changer for the Commodores’ basketball program, providing student-athletes with top-notch amenities and resources to enhance their performance on and off the court.

The Huber Center features cutting-edge technology, including a video analysis room, a sports science lab, and a recovery center equipped with cryotherapy and hydrotherapy options. The facility also includes a weight room, practice courts, locker rooms, and coaches’ offices, all designed to provide players with everything they need to succeed.

Vanderbilt Athletics Dedicates Huber Center
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In one of the most significant milestones yet in the historic Vandy United campaign, Vanderbilt University today dedicated the Huber Center for men’s and women’s basketball. The cutting-edge operations center and practice facility was made possible by the generosity of Vanderbilt alumnus George B. Huber, BA’79, and his wife Cathy, together with more than 4,000 Vandy United donors.

One of the largest standalone facilities in the country, the Huber Center bolsters the proud history of Memorial Gymnasium with the championship training environment of the future.

“I’m so thankful to everyone in Commodore Nation who made the Huber Center possible—it truly was a dream team effort,” said Candice Storey Lee, vice chancellor for athletics and university affairs and athletic director. “The Huber Center suits a university that dares to grow in so many ways, and it’s a facility worthy of the history and tradition of Vanderbilt men’s and women’s basketball. I can say with complete confidence that there is no better basketball facility in the nation. And I can’t wait to see the Memorial Magic our student-athletes are able to make thanks to this incredible investment.”

Friday’s dedication and open house celebrated the completion of one of Vandy United’s cornerstone projects. Guests heard remarks from Lee, Huber, Chancellor Daniel Diermeier, women’s basketball head coach Shea Ralph and men’s basketball head coach Mark Byington.

“The values our coaches and student-athletes champion are values we hold dear at Vanderbilt: hard work and courage, continual growth, equal measures of challenge and support and selflessly coming together in pursuit of a greater common purpose,” Diermeier said. “In form and spirit, the Huber Center embodies our effort to build the great university of the 21st century—a place where the best and brightest will realize their full potential.”

Huber welcomed the opportunity to speak for the thousands who have made Vandy United a reality.

“Cathy and I are proud to be here today on behalf of the community that came together to make this facility possible,” Huber said. “Athletics are an essential part of a university’s identity—how it defines itself and how the world sees it. They inspire and unite us. Together with all of those who supported Vandy United and this project, we believe our basketball programs can embody the excellence that Vanderbilt strives for in everything it does. We’re excited to see Commodores come together to cheer what starts here.”

The four-story facility, which sits in the north end zone of FirstBank Stadium, has separate practice gyms for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Positioned in the heart of the Frist Athletics Village, it offers coaches, staff and student-athletes direct access to Memorial Gymnasium and a host of services and amenities designed to enhance the student-athlete experience.
- Player spaces include locker rooms, player lounges and film rooms, in addition to training facilities that include a hydrotherapy and recovery suite, double height weight room, dedicated sports science area and multiple nutrition stations.
- The facility also houses multipurpose event spaces that serve the teams on a day-to-day basis and serve as premium spaces for Commodore football games.
- The Huber Center is designed to be environmentally sustainable, from rainwater collection strategies to mass timber construction in the weight room, among other techniques.
“In everything we do here, starting with Chancellor Diermeier and Dr. Candice Storey Lee, you can see that there is a clear vision for the relentless commitment to maximizing our full potential as human beings,” Ralph said. “That allows me to create an opportunity that I don’t think our student-athletes could experience anywhere else. To George and Cathy Huber, thank you so much for all that you’ve contributed—not only in material but in heart and vision and for inspiring the community to do the same. What you have created for our student-athletes is a day-to-day representation of what it’s possible for them to achieve on and off the basketball court.”

“When I jump out of bed every morning, I can’t wait to get here,” Byington said. “We have absolutely everything here—the technology, the training. When you have a chance to walk around and you see the weight room, it’s the nicest weight room I’ve seen regardless of sport. With all these things, it’s just about taking care of our student-athletes in the best possible way. I can’t say enough about the generosity of the Huber family. The family’s name is on the building, but they’re more deeply invested than that. The way they care and they give, they show it in their actions in a lot of different ways.”

Both basketball teams began using the Huber Center earlier this season. Entering the weekend, they had a combined record of 31-8. Men’s basketball defeated No. 6 Tennessee last weekend and enters Saturday’s home game against Kentucky with a 15-4 record. Seeking back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament, women’s basketball is 16-4 and also defeated Tennessee last weekend.

Pacers Could Land $60M Center in Massive Move Ahead of Trade Deadline
The Indiana Pacers have completely bounced back from a slow start to their season. The Pacers have put themselves in a position to make a massive splash ahead of the upcoming trade deadline in the NBA.

Indiana has a strong roster but they may need just a little more firepower to truly compete against the other elite teams in the Eastern Conference. In this new trade idea, the Pacers go all-in and land a multi-time All-Star center to boost their chances.

The deal would be between the Pacers, Chicago Bulls, and Atlanta Hawks. After using the Spotrac trade machine and abiding by the new CBA restrictions in place, here is what the deal would look like between the three teams:

Pacers receive: Nikola Vucevic

Bulls receive: Clint Capela, Isaiah Jackson, and a 2025 first-round draft pick

Hawks receive: Obi Toppin, Talen Horton-Tucker, a 2025 second-round draft pick, and a 2030 second-round draft pick

Why Pacers do this

Indiana doesn’t need to do anything but adding a player like Vucevic could drastically change the outcome of their year. Vucevic is an All-Star-level talent who could provide more size to this Pacers rotation.

Myles Turner is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the year so he would also give Indiana some insurance if he were to leave. Indiana wants to retain Turner but there is no guarantee that he will return once he goes onto the open market.

Why Bulls do this

Chicago has been looking to move Vucevic for some time as they enter into a rebuild. In this deal, they would land an expiring $22 million contract in Capela, giving them some financial flexibility heading into the offseason.

The Bulls also land an additional first-round draft pick for the upcoming year. The 2025 draft class is considered to be a strong one so the Bulls could heavily benefit from having the extra draft pick.

Why Hawks do this

Atlanta has been looking to possibly move Capela before the trade deadline and they would land a nice player in Toppin for him. With Capela being a free agent at the end of the year, the Hawks make sure they receive something for his services.

The team also would get a few extra draft picks to potentially use in other deals down the line. Atlanta has played better of late but Capela still seems like he could be on the move ahead of the deadline.

Can Bonnies get back on track at vaunted Siegel Center? | Sports
Coming off back-to-back losses, the challenge doesn’t let up Friday night for a shorthanded St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team.

The Bonnies will make another trip to the Siegel Center in Richmond, Va., to take on VCU, playing on national television for a late tipoff (9 p.m., ESPNU). Chance Moore, the team’s leading scorer at the time of his injury, missed Tuesday’s home game against George Mason after exiting in the first half Saturday at Duquesne with a foot injury, joining starting point guard Dasonte Bowen and bench wing Jaxon Edwards on the sidelines.

Bona coach Mark Schmidt called Moore a “game-time decision” for Friday night, perhaps an encouraging update after none had been given following the Mason game.

“We’ll see how his foot’s feeling in warm-ups, I guess, and then we’ll go from there,” Schmidt said.

Bowen, out since playing Dec. 7 against Buffalo, is still “further behind” Moore in returning, Schmidt noted.

Whoever is on the court, Bona needs to avoid another slow start. The Bonnies trailed Duquesne by as many as 14 points in the first half and Mason by as many as 18 in the first. The start on Tuesday was compounded by foul trouble for Noel Brown and Lajae Jones needing medical attention after taking an elbow to the mouth.

“It’s experience,” Schmidt said of the slow starts. “When Noel got in foul trouble and Lajae got hurt and we didn’t have Chance, we’ve got three first-year guys out there and sometimes it’s a learning experience and you’ve got to be put through the fire to figure it out and the only way you learn is to experience it, and hopefully those guys have learned. Duquesne played well, George Mason is a really good team. It’s not like we’ve lost or got behind against bad teams. They’re very good teams and some way, somehow we’ve got to get off to a good start. Especially on the road and especially against a team like VCU.”

Schmidt’s teams have enjoyed a rare run of success against VCU, one of the A-10’s premier programs, winning four straight, including their last two at the Siegel Center, dating back to before coach Ryan Odom took over the Rams in 2023. Of course, many of those wins featured vastly different rosters, especially for Bona.

For Bona, beating VCU, especially on the road, needs to start with good offensive possessions.

“You’ve just got to go down there and you play basketball,” said Schmidt, whose next win will mark his 400th (317 at Bona, 82 at Robert Morris). “You know what you have to do to beat a VCU team. It’s hard to do it, but if you turn the ball over, you’ve got no chance. They’ll dunk it and the crowd goes crazy and it gets louder and louder and louder. You can’t take quick shots. You’ve got to run good offense. When the crowd goes crazy, you’ve got to slow down and you’ve got to execute. That takes good players and it takes discipline and it’s hard to do.”

Schmidt often says in the A-10, you have to win your home games and steal some on the road. This remains one of the hardest places to do that.

“We’ve had really good teams, veteran teams that have gone down there and haven’t been successful,” Schmidt said. “You just get caught up in the environment.

“And every team plays better at home for the most part, but they’ll have 7,800 people there and it’ll be wild, they’ll have their big band. It’s a great environment. As I told the team, it’s exciting. That’s what you work all your life for, to play in types of environments like this and at Dayton. So we’re going to have that chance at 9 o’clock tomorrow night.”

The Rams (15-4, 5-1) have won five straight since a conference-opening loss at Bona on New Year’s Eve, when Melvin Council Jr.’s shot in the dying seconds lifted the Bonnies 77-75.

VCU has four players averaging double-figure scoring in A-10 play, led by Joe Bamisile, at 16.0 points per game and 46.7% 3-point shooting. Phillip Russell, a UT-Arlington transfer who scored 26 points at Bona, averages 13.8 in the A-10; returning A-10 first-team selection Max Shulga is at 12.7 and Clemson transfer Jack Clark is at 10.7.

If Moore can’t go for Bona, it should mean more playing time for freshmen Noah Bolanga and Duane Thompson. Thompson scored a career-high 16 points with a career-high seven rebounds off the bench on Tuesday.

Bolanga started as the small forward, next to Jones, scoring eight points before fouling out after 20:40 on the court.

“Be productive,” Schmidt said of what he needs to see from the Frenchman. “Make some shots. Make that open shot, defend. I thought he was defending a little bit better. He made a shot the other day and hopefully that opens up the rim for him. Just being productive. You don’t have to score all the time. You’ve got to hit that open shot, you’ve got to defend, you’ve got to rebound. He didn’t have a rebound in the game in 20 minutes. That physicality, and being able to guard your position and rebound your position and when you have an open shot, knock it down.”

The St. Bonaventure Bonnies are looking to get back on track as they face off against the VCU Rams at the Siegel Center. After suffering a tough loss in their last game, the Bonnies are determined to bounce back and secure a crucial victory on the road.

The Siegel Center is known for being a tough environment for opposing teams, with the Rams having a strong home-court advantage. However, the Bonnies are no strangers to playing in hostile environments and are ready to rise to the challenge.

Anthony Davis says Lakers ‘right there’ but need to add center

Anthony Davis believes the Los Angeles Lakers are just a couple of players away from being a title contender. He hopes one of the additions the team adds before the Feb. 6 trade deadline is a center.

“I think we need another big,” Davis told ESPN’s Shams Charania this week. “I feel like I’ve always been at my best when I’ve been the 4, having a big out there.”

Davis and fellow Lakers star LeBron James have expressed that they want the franchise to make moves to contend for a title, sources told Charania earlier this week. The Lakers entered Thursday night just one game ahead of the seventh-place Sacramento Kings and a guaranteed playoff spot, and James said following Sunday night’s blowout loss to the LA Clippers that the team doesn’t have “room for error” with the way the roster is currently constructed.

“We have to play perfect basketball,” James said after the defeat.

The Lakers, who entered Thursday night’s game against the Boston Celtics at 23-18, won the championship in 2020 with what Davis called “the perfect construction” of a team. In addition to good shooters and defensive players, Davis pointed to the team’s size, which allowed him to play what he feels is his natural position of power forward.

“We know it worked when we won a championship with JaVale [McGee] and Dwight [Howard] at the 5 and I’m at the 4,” he told Charania.

Davis leads the Lakers with 25.7 points and 11.9 rebounds per game, comparable to his averages of 26.1 points and 9.3 rebounds during the 2020 title season. But the Lakers have gotten meaningful minutes from only one true center — 7-footer Jaxson Hayes, who is averaging 5.3 points and 3.9 rebounds in 20 games.

Davis hopes the team will do something about that in the next couple of weeks.

“We feel like we are right there, you know, as far as the team and everything like that,” Davis told Charania. “[James] and I are like very, very motivated to win another championship.”

Anthony Davis wants Lakers to trade for center ahead of deadline
Anthony Davis and LeBron James are putting the full-court blitz on the Lakers front office ahead of the trade deadline.

After a report earlier in the week from Shams Charania of ESPN stated the team was losing faith in the front office to make a move, AD laid it out clearly himself.

In a sit-down interview with Charania that aired on Thursday, Davis said he wants the Lakers to trade for a center to mimic the look of the 2019-20 title-winning team.

“I think we need another big. I feel like I’ve always been at my best when I’ve been a four and having a big out there. We know it worked when we won a championship with JaVale and Dwight, them at the five and I’m at the four.”

Davis then went on to talk more about that team and it’s “perfect construction” to which he also revealed that he thinks this iteration of the Lakers is multiple pieces away.

AD: “I think our ‘19-20 team was like the perfect construction of a team. We had shooters, we had dogs defensively, we had scorers, everybody knew their role.”

Shams: “It sounds to me like you’re saying you guys are maybe a couple pieces away”

AD: “We are. We are, though. I really feel like we are”

I will say that it might be important to watch as this part could be interpreted multiple ways. While it felt like Charania was painting it in a negative light that they’re still multiple pieces away, AD’s response felt like him saying they were “only” a couple pieces away.

That one can be left up to interpretation, though.

What isn’t being left to interpret, however, is how LeBron and AD feel about this team moving forward. As the pair navigate another fairly healthy season, it’s clear they are not interested in the franchise’s future and want to win now, and who can blame them?

Neither player is likely going to be playing in 2031, which is one of the first round picks the Lakers can trade, and are much more concerned about the here and now.

Specifically, regarding AD, he’s made his feelings known about wanting to play next to a center multiple times now. While he’s been willing to play center, particularly in the big moments, he’s been adamant that he wants a big man next to him.

It’s also worth noting that AD talked about how perfect the construction of the 2019-20 team was, which included two centers that were defensive anchors. The Lakers have been linked to lots of big men in the trade market, but few of them can be described as defensive anchors.

And yes, I’m looking at you, Nikola Vucevic and Jonas Valančiūnas.

The name that is going to come up, then, is Walker Kessler from the Jazz. As a young big, he is very much a defensive anchor and could play alongside AD. He would also cost a good bit of draft capital, too.

The timing of this, though, is very important and strategic. The Lakers are two weeks out from the trade deadline and, now, the focus has shifted entirely to the front office.

Does vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka dare stand pat and go against the wishes of his two stars at the deadline? Can he survive doing so and watching the Lakers flounder out in the playoffs once more?
