TEMPE, Ariz. — Suffice to say that UCF made a strong impression on its first road trip to the new Big 12 outposts in Arizona.
Keyshawn Hall capped the trip with a career-high 40 points in a 95-89 victory over Arizona State on Tuesday night, giving the Knights a split on their five-day, two-game excursion and their second Big 12 road win.
The Knights (12-4, 3-2) looked every bit a potential contender as they prepared for another test against No. 10 Houston (13-3, 5-0) at Addition Financial Arena on Saturday,
“I love our guys’ competitive spirit,” UCF coach Johnny Dawkins said. “They really do compete.”

The Knights outrebounded the Wildcats 42-41 and had a season-high 22 offensive rebounds that led to 23 second-chance points.
“They kicked our ass on the glass. I mean, kicked our ass,” Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said. “Kick ass. Relentless.”
Hall, a 6-foot-7 transfer from George Mason, was the same kind of relentless on the offensive end Tuesday, with help down the stretch from senior point guard Darius Johnson.
Hall scored 29 of the Knights’ first 41 points and finished 13 of 18 from the floor with a season-high four 3-pointers. He made all 10 of his free throw attempts and had a season-high 6 assists.
“He’s a three-level scorer,” Dawkins said. “He stepped up when we needed it the most. It’s something I’ll never forget. I can say I was in the building when he had a game of 40 points on the road in the Big 12.”
Hall finished the game with a flourish. He raised his arms high and flashed a grin as bright as his dazzling red Nikes with the green laces after sinking a free throw in the final second to reach 4-0.
“I’m just thankful that I get to do this every day and stay healthy,” said Hall, who had 62 points on the trip to bump his scoring average to 17.6. “We are playing together. We’re not the best we can be, but we are getting there. We just show love to each other and support each other.”
Hall is one of 11 new Knights looking to blend. He scored 36 points against Division III Bridgewater (Va.) last season, and his career high against a D-I opponent was 29 vs. Cornell.
Darius Johnson, trying to maneuver around Colorado guard Felix Kossaras, only shoots 5-for-13 vs. Colorado but finished with 17 points. (Stephen M. Dowell/Orlando Sentinel) Johnson said the trip provided an opportunity for the group to grow.
“Honestly, we have to stay composed,” he said. “I feel like we let one slip away at Arizona, but we regrouped and we responded. We got a road win at a great basketball program. Now we have to focus on the next play and get ready for Houston.”
The Cougars bring a nine-game winning streak into Orlando after handling West Virginia 70-54 on Wednesday. Houston entered that game leading Division I in scoring defense and field-goal percentage defense. Fifth-year senior guard L.J. Cryer leads in scoring at 14.3.
UCF relied on Johnson for his leadership late against Arizona State. Johnson handled the ball at the top of the key on all of their possessions in the final three minutes. The result: two driving layups, a pass to Hall for a short jumper and three free throws after being fouled.
“Keyshawn held us up the whole game,” Johnson said. “They were trying to help off other guys, doubling him. I just wanted to give him a little bit of relief. I knew it was going to be a little bit physical down the stretch, and I wanted to put the pressure on the refs.”
UCF led by as many as 12 early in the second half, but Arizona State outscored the Knights 20-10 when Hall missed eight minutes after picking his fourth foul five minutes in.
The Knights chipped away after Hall returned, and Johnson’s three-point play on a driving layup with 2:44 remaining gave the Knights an 87-84 lead they never lost.
“That’s part of what we do,” Dawkins said of Johnson’s play down the stretch. “He’s our senior leader. He’s been his best at his biggest moments, and tonight he was at his best when we needed him the most.”
Johnson had 17 points and 7 assists, and the Knights broke out of a mini-shooting skid by making 50.8% from the floor after not breaking 40% in their previous three.
J.J. Taylor had season highs with 14 points and 9 rebounds while playing extended time against Arizona State in the absence of 7-foot-2 freshman rim protector Moustapha Thiam, who missed the game with an undisclosed illness.
His status for Houston is unknown.

The University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights have been making a strong case for their status as a contender in the Big 12 conference this season. With an impressive 5-1 record and a high-powered offense led by quarterback Dillon Gabriel, UCF has shown they have what it takes to compete at a high level.Their upcoming matchup against the No. 10 ranked Houston Cougars will be a crucial test for the Knights. A win against a top-10 team like Houston would solidify UCF’s status as a legitimate threat in the Big 12 conference and put them on the radar of college football fans across the country.
UCF’s high-flying offense, which is averaging over 42 points per game, will be a tough challenge for Houston’s defense. The Knights have a balanced attack with a strong running game led by Isaiah Bowser and a talented group of receivers who can stretch the field.

In a concerning development, many election deniers are now seeking state positions that would give them authority to certify election results. This trend raises serious questions about the integrity of our democratic process and the potential for these individuals to undermine fair and transparent elections. As we approach the 2022 midterm elections, it is more important than ever to ensure that those responsible for certifying election results are committed to upholding the principles of democracy and respecting the will of the voters. The rise of election deniers in positions of power threatens to erode trust in our electoral system and sow doubt about the legitimacy of election outcomes.
It is crucial that we remain vigilant and oppose any efforts to install election deniers in positions of authority. We must stand up for the integrity of our elections and protect the democratic rights of all citizens. The future of our democracy depends on it.
