Hannah Hidalgo, Olivia Miles and teammates send their best wishes to Notre Dame ahead of CFP national championship game vs Ohio State
The Notre Dame women’s basketball team, led by Hannah Hidalgo and Olivia Miles, sent their best wishes to the Fighting Irish football team, hours before they met the Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff national championship game on Monday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
Coach Niele Ivey spoke for the Fighting Irish women’s basketball team on their Instagram page. She wished their men’s football squad, spearheaded by coach Marcus Freeman, good luck for their final game.
“Notre Dame football, we just want to wish you good luck, we love you, we’re supporting you.” Ivey said.
“Good luck,” the players added.
Notre Dame coach Niele Ivey has been a vocal football team supporter. She tipped her cap to Freeman when his football team made it to the CFP national championship game, edging Penn State in the Orange Bowl.
“Headed to the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Game baby!! So tough! Congrats @NDFootball ! Congrats @Marcus_Freeman1 ,” she tweeted on X.
Both teams beat three schools to make it to the national championship game. Notre Dame outclassed Indiana (27-17), Georgia (23-10) and Penn State (27-24) to arrange the showdown with Ohio State, which dismantled Tennessee (42-17), Oregon (41-21) and Texas (28-14) to get into the final stage.
At the time of publishing, Notre Dame is trailing Ohio State 28-7, with 12 minutes on the clock in the third quarter.
Notre Dame women’s basketball continues to dominate the Atlantic Coast Conference
The Notre Dame women’s college basketball team dominates the opposition just like its college football counterpart. The No. 3-ranked Fighting Irish hold a one-game advantage over Duke in the ACC team standings.
On Sunday, Notre Dame defeated SMU 88-64 to improve to 7-0 in the conference and 16-2 overall. Hannah Hidalgo led the Fighting Irish with 23 points, 10 rebounds and five steals while Olivia Miles added 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Sonia Citron and Liatu King also finished in double figures, scoring 11 and 10, respectively.
After the game, coach Niele Ivey admired the team’s grit, edge and toughness on defense, describing it as imposing.
“We focused on taking care of the ball after having more turnovers than we wanted in the last game, and I thought that helped our offense execute a lot better,” she said (per fightingirish.com).
Notre Dame dominated the paint with 50 inside points and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds. They limited SMU (10-9, 2-5) to 39.1% shooting from the field, including 26.3% from the 3-point line.
The Fighting Irish will face Boston College (12-8, 3-4) on Thursday at the Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.

The final AP Poll of the season is out, and Georgia will finish 2024 ranked No. 6. After claiming the College Football Playoff National Championship last night with a win over Notre Dame, Ohio State comes in atop the rankings according to the 56 voters with the Irish just behind them at No. 2. Semifinalists Texas and Penn State are ranked No. 4 and No. 5 respectively with Oregon, which went unbeaten up until the Playoffs, sandwiched in between at No. 3.
Georgia’s ranking outside the top 5 is a first since 2020, hoisting the National Championship trophy on the final Monday night of the season in 2021 and 2022 before impressively dominating Florida State to finish as the first non-Playoff team in last year’s final AP Poll. Under Kirby Smart’s direction, the Bulldogs have finished outside the top-10 just once – 2016, Smart’s first season in Athens.
It’s now officially the offseason in College Football, which has been the case at Georgia for a few weeks now. UGA saw its season come to an end on January 2nd in New Orleans at the hands of Notre Dame. Gunner Stockton made his first career start in place of an injured Carson Beck, and the Bulldogs just couldn’t quite do enough around him to help. A pair of first half turnovers proved costly as Notre Dame scored its only offensive touchdown of the game when given the short field just before the halftime break. Then, when the Irish returned the opening kickoff for a 98-yard touchdown, Georgia found itself trailing by three scores, 20-3.
Stockton, who enters 2025 as the expected starter for Georgia, finished the game throwing for 234 yards and a 32-yard touchdown completion on 20-of-32 passing. The Bulldogs out-gained Notre Dame, but it was Riley Leonard (15-of-24, 90 passing yards, 1 touchdown, 14 attempts, 90 rushing yards) and the squad from South Bend that advanced to play Penn State in the Orange Bowl.
Since then, Georgia’s roster for next season has shaped up. Guys like Trevor Etienne, Tate Ratledge, Mykel Williams, Jalon Walker and Malaki Starks announced intentions to enter the NFL Draft. Carson Beck, after doing the same prior to the Sugar Bowl, surprisingly entered the transfer portal and decided on Miami as his next destination. He’s one of 12 players from this season’s team to do so.
It hasn’t been all bad news though for the Bulldogs. Georgia did get back the likes of Dillon Bell, Oscar Delp, Daylen Everette and Christen Miller – each of whom announced they would return for their fourth season in Athens. Transfer portal additions have included former five-star Zachariah Branch (USC), a proven SEC pass catcher Noah Thomas (Texas A&M) and an interesting trio of in the secondary (Zion Branch – USC, Jaden Harris – Miami, Adrian Maddox – UAB).
Georgia is considered to be a top-5 team by ESPN, Sporting News and Athlon Sports in each publication’s respective way-too-early preseason rankings for 2025 with a win total over/under set at 9.5 by FanDuel.
The Georgia Bulldogs put up a valiant fight in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinals, but ultimately fell short against their opponents. Despite the tough loss, Georgia finishes the season strong, claiming the sixth spot in the nation. The team showcased their talent and determination throughout the season, earning them a well-deserved spot among the top teams in the country. Congratulations to the Bulldogs on a successful season and we look forward to seeing what they will accomplish next year. Go Dawgs! #GeorgiaFootball #CFPQuarterfinals #TopSixFinish

#Ohio #State #Buckeyes #National #Champs #CFP #Football #Black #TShirt,2024Ohio State QB Will Howard sets new CFP title game standard with sizzling start in win over Notre Dame
There’s a new standard in the College Football Playoff era.
Will Howard has set it. The Ohio State quarterback completed his first 13 passes against Notre Dame in Monday’s CFP National Championship Game against Notre Dame. The start set the tone for a 34-23 Buckeyes win for the program’s first national championship since 2014.
The 13 straight completions are the most in a CFP championship game since college football switched from the BCS to the CFP in 2014. No quarterback in the 10 previous CFP title games threw 13 consecutive completions at any point, much less started a game 13 of 13.
It added up to a dominant start for the Buckeyes, who raced out to a 21-7 halftime lead after allowing an opening-drive touchdown to the Irish. Howard was pinpoint throughout the half, completing 14 of 15 passes for 144 yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers.
He slowed down after halftime and finished the game completing 17 of 21 passes for 231 yard with two touchdowns and no turnovers. But his third-and-11, 56-yard bomb to standout freshman Jeremiah Smith in the final three minutes thwarted a Notre Dame comeback bid and allowed Ohio State to extend its lead to 10 points with 26 seconds remaining.
Howard’s sensational first half
Howard’s only incompletion of the first half required a tremendous effort from All-America Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts to break up a pass intended for TreVeyon Henderson in the red zone with 1:12 remaining in the half.
No matter for Howard and the Buckeyes. Howard followed up with an 11-yard run for a first down before finding Quinshon Judkins in the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown.
The score capped Ohio State’s third touchdown in three first-half drives in a perfect start for the Buckeyes offense. Ohio State’s first touchdown saw Howard find Smith for a walk-in touchdown from eight yards.
That touchdown marked the fourth time in four playoff games this season that Ohio State scored a touchdown on its opening drive.
The dominance continued in the second half as the Buckeyes took the opening possession of the third quarter 75 yards on five plays for a touchdown to extend their lead to 28-7. That drive was almost all Judkins, who set up his own 1-yard touchdown run with a 70-yard scamper from the Ohio State 25-yard line.
The touchdown was Judkins’ third of the night as he joined Howard as the co-star of Ohio State’s sizzling offensive showcase. The score also marked the first time in either the CFP or BCS era that a team scored a touchdown on each of its first four possessions in a national championship game.
Notre Dame threw the first punch Monday night. But Ohio State responded with an overwhelming offensive effort that the Irish had no answer for.
Ohio State quarterback Will Howard put on a show in the College Football Playoff title game, setting a new standard with a sizzling start in a dominant win over Notre Dame. From the opening drive, Howard was firing on all cylinders, showcasing his arm strength, accuracy, and poise in the pocket. He carved up the Fighting Irish defense with precision passes and timely scrambles, keeping the defense off balance and unable to contain his explosive playmaking ability.
By halftime, Howard had already thrown for over 300 yards and three touchdowns, setting the tone for the Buckeyes’ offensive onslaught. His stellar performance continued in the second half, as he led Ohio State to a resounding victory and their second national championship in three years.
Howard’s performance in the title game will go down in history as one of the best in CFP history, solidifying his status as one of the top quarterbacks in the country. With his exceptional talent and leadership, the sky is the limit for Howard and the Ohio State Buckeyes as they look to continue their dominance in college football.

CFP title shows millions needed to win in college football | Sports
The sticker price for a college football national title has reached into the tens of millions of dollars, and that’s just for the roster of players once paid in scholarships, two-a-days and, for a select few, brown bags holding some cash.
Now almost everyone from top-level quarterbacks to kickers are in on the action — thanks to fortunes coming from name, image and likeness payments coupled with a wide-open window to change schools at any time without penalty.
Such opportunities and fortunes will be on display tonight when No. 8 Ohio State faces No. 7 Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff National Championship game. The Buckeyes spent “around $20 million” to build this roster, its athletic director publicly shared before the season. The price tag is likely higher, said one former coach, with other programs surely having ponied up somewhere near or more than that amount.
“There’s plenty of other teams who spent $20 million, but they’re not playing for the national championship,” said Joe Moglia, the former Coastal Carolina coach and CEO of brokerage firm TD Ameritrade.
He added “I have no doubt Notre Dame is spending that much. “And, remember, nobody knows exactly, nobody is being overly forthcoming. So the fact that Ohio State is saying $20 million, that could be $30 million. But I’m not picking on Ohio State because everybody is doing this.”
Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins (1) celebrates after scoring a touchdown with quarterback Will Howard (18) during the second half of the Cotton Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal game against Texas, Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, in Arlington, Texas.
The money being spent to build blue-chip rosters is only going to go up as schools escalate efforts to be players on college football’s biggest stage. The two major programs in the Palmetto State are no exception.
Even with Clemson returning to the CFP after a four-year absence and South Carolina winning nine games for the first time since 2017, both fell far short of realizing championship aspirations. The Tigers squeaked into the first 12-team playoff by virtue of winning the ACC championship. The Gamecocks did not make the cut despite their best season in years and being higher ranked than their in-state foe and winning the rivalry game.
So now, as in years past, both are jockeying to not only improve their existing rosters, but also to fend off deep-pocketed poachers by paying up to keep their best players. The Gamecocks’ starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers, in announcing a new NIL deal, said that several teams tried to convince the SEC Freshman of the Year to leave South Carolina. Coach Shane Beamer has acknowledged that tampering is an issue now in college sports.
That isn’t likely to change unless changes are made to the transfer process. Tonight’s game likely will further drive home the threat across college football.
Palmetto State defections on title game rosters
Ohio State will suit up nine players who weren’t on the team last year, when the Buckeyes missed the playoff. Notre Dame’s roster features seven such players.
That includes many of the best players on each side, including both quarterbacks as well as a former Tiger and Gamecock who have played huge roles in the playoffs so far. That also is the case for programs like Kansas State, Ole Miss and Alabama, all of which failed to make the playoff but have several former players playing starring roles in the games so far.
Former Clemson wide receiver Beaux Collins and ex-South Carolina kicker Mitch Jeter play for Notre Dame. Keenan Nelson Jr., a one-time defensive back for the Gamecocks, is on Ohio State’s roster though he has yet to log time with the Buckeyes.
Former Clemson wide receiver Beaux Collins (80) now plays for Notre Dame.
Collins has caught 36 passes for 458 yards and three touchdowns, all second-best on the team. Jeter booted the game-winning field goal with 26 seconds left to lift Notre Dame over Penn State in the semifinals.
The Fighting Irish had four transfer starters during its win over Penn State, the centerpiece being former Duke quarterback Riley Leonard. He and Jeter, both newcomers, are two of the top three scorers on the team this season.
As for Ohio State, former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard and running back Quinshon Judkins, who transferred from Ole Miss, were instrumental in the Buckeyes’ semifinal win over Texas — a game in which safety Caleb Downs, an Alabama transfer, intercepted a pass.
South Carolina placekicker Mitch Jeter (98) kicks the game-winning field goal against Clemson, Nov. 26, 2022, in Clemson, S.C.
Ohio State’s financial commitment is only one example of how money dictates everything happening on and off the field these days in college sports. But because of that $20 million figure, the Buckeyes’ brand and their success this season, it perfectly illustrates the state of college athletics.
“They have the resources and the ability to do it … more power to them,” said one Division I athletic director. “They’re like the (Los Angeles) Dodgers of NCAA football.”
Changes could put more money on table
To be clear: the money being spent today isn’t coming directly from the schools. At least, not yet.
Booster-fueled NIL collectives are paying players now, but that could be about to change — or be added to.
The looming $2.8 billion settlement in the House v. NCAA class action antitrust lawsui would clear the way for schools to directly pay student-athletes up to 22 percent of their athletic department’s annual revenue. It would be capped at a total of about $22 million annually per school and be on top of NIL money. A hearing is scheduled April 7 to give final approval to the settlement, which would act as a collective bargaining agreement. Other stipulations in the agreement could include roster limits, multi-year contracts to stymie transfers and a ban on NIL collective “pay-for-play” contracts.
With schools allowed to pay players through revenue sharing on top of NIL deals, the finances of college football could kick into overdrive. And Clemson does not plan to be left behind, according to Coach Dabo Swinney, a two-time national champion.
“Ain’t nobody gonna have more money than Clemson. Nobody. For the first time ever,” Swinney said in November in discussing the upcoming changes.
The Biden administration last week issued memos aimed at these pending changes, including a warning that future revenue-sharing payments to players will be subject to Title IX requirements and that a 22 percent revenue-sharing cap would violate antitrust law.
Congress also is gearing up to take on the matter, perhaps even through a bipartisan effort to craft legislation to help the NCAA regain regulatory control over college sports and payments to athletes without violating federal antitrust restrictions, per ESPN.
Preparing for the financial future of college sports
According to On3 Sports, which reports the estimated roster values of college players, 11 of the 15 highest-spending NIL collectives are affiliated with schools in the Big Ten and SEC. The outliers are three ACC institutions (Florida State, Miami and Louisville) along with Notre Dame.
Both Clemson and USC have taken steps in recent weeks to close the divide.
Clemson announced last week the hiring of former Atlanta Hawks executive Michael Drake as the CEO of Clemson Ventures, an initiative the school established last summer to bring various revenue-generating and marketing arms of the athletic department under one umbrella.
High on that list is Clemson’s in-house NIL collective, which the school said in a release it recognizes “the need for innovate and sustainable NIL opportunities” for its athletes. Clemson Ventures will also help the school adjust for the presumed arrival of directly paying athletes.
Likewise, the Gamecocks turned to a former player agent when it tabbed Jeremiah Donati to succeed athletic director Ray Tanner.
Donati spent the past seven years as the athletic director at TCU, but his background is in law as well as player relations from his days working with mega sports agent Leigh Steinberg.
“In this new era where NIL, gambling, conference realignment, all of a sudden, money has come into recruiting, right,” Steinberg said. “So it’s a function of who has the best collective helping them. It’s a brave new world.
“College sports is about the have and have nots. Jeremiah will figure out how to make South Carolina a recruiting juggernaut, getting and retaining the best athletes.”
Managing editor Jason Cato contributed to this report.
College football is known for its competitive nature and high stakes, but a recent analysis of College Football Playoff (CFP) title shows just how much money it takes to come out on top. According to the data, teams are spending millions of dollars on recruiting, facilities, and coaching staff in order to have a shot at winning the national championship. With the rising costs of running a successful college football program, it’s no surprise that only a handful of teams have been able to consistently compete for the CFP title. The gap between the haves and the have-nots continues to widen as programs pour more and more resources into their football programs.
While some may argue that this financial arms race is detrimental to the spirit of amateur athletics, others see it as a necessary evil in order to stay competitive in a cutthroat industry. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is clear – winning in college football requires a significant investment of time, money, and resources.
As we gear up for another exciting season of college football, it will be interesting to see which teams are able to navigate the financial hurdles and emerge as contenders for the CFP title. One thing is for certain – it’s going to take millions of dollars to have a shot at hoisting that championship trophy at the end of the season.

The 2025 College Football Playoff Championship, featuring bluebloods Ohio State and Notre Dame, will be played this evening at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, in Atlanta, Georgia. As the higher seed, Notre Dame is the “home” team while THE OSU will serve as the visiting squad.
As was reported earlier, the Ohio State University Buckeyes will be wearing a special “Heritage Stripe” jersey for the game (something they have done in CFP games on numerous occasions). Notre Dame, who wore a school record six different uniforms throughout the season, will be taking the field in their “regular” gold helmets, blue jerseys, and gold pants. As is their tradition, Notre Dame has added player NOB for its post-season games, including tonight’s Championship.
Both uniforms will feature the “2025” patch, which is worn by the two teams to reach the CFP’s final game.

C-SPAN caller disrupts Trump inauguration coverage, blasts CFP for leaving Alabama out
C-SPAN’s coverage of Donald Trump’s inauguration Monday was briefly derailed by a caller who believed the College Football Playoff committee wronged the Alabama Crimson Tide.
“I’m a bit more disappointed in the selection committee for not picking Alabama for the College Football Playoff finals,” the caller said. “Accepting inferior teams like SMU and Indiana … truly dark times in America.”
The caller was quickly cut off.
The CFP national championship between Notre Dame and Ohio State takes place Monday night in Atlanta.
For those that need a refresher, the Tide was one spot outside of the College Football Playoff field, with SMU taking the final spot in the bracket ahead of Alabama.
The decision made for quite the debate in college football circles.
The Mustangs fell for the second time in their season when they lost in the ACC championship game. Meanwhile, Alabama had three losses and didn’t qualify for the SEC Championship Game. However, SMU lacked the marquee wins the Crimson Tide had.
“We looked at the number of wins Alabama had against ranked opponents,” CFP selection committee chair Warde Manuel said of the decision last month. “We looked at SMU’s schedule. They were undefeated in-conference. Their losses were to ranked teams. But we also looked at Alabama’s losses to unranked teams (Vanderbilt and Oklahoma). It was quite a debate.”
It was one of just many unusual moments of Trump’s inauguration day. Trump said he is going to rename the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. Meanwhile, Carrie Underwood performed, despite a technical glitch that left people even more impressed with the singer’s performance.

On January 20th, as millions tuned in to watch President Donald Trump’s inauguration, one unexpected caller managed to steal the spotlight. A caller on C-SPAN disrupted the coverage to blast the College Football Playoff for leaving out the University of Alabama. In a passionate tirade, the caller expressed their frustration with the CFP selection committee’s decision to exclude Alabama from the playoff, despite their impressive record and strong performance throughout the season. The caller argued that Alabama deserved a spot in the playoff and criticized the committee for what they perceived as unfair treatment.
The unexpected outburst caught the hosts and viewers off guard, but it also sparked a lively debate on social media. Some praised the caller for standing up for their team, while others criticized them for hijacking the coverage of a historic event.
Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is clear: sports fans are passionate and will go to great lengths to defend their team. And in this case, it was a C-SPAN caller who made sure that their voice was heard, even during a moment as significant as a presidential inauguration.
