  • 2025 World Junior Hockey Championship: Team Sweden preview

2025 World Junior Hockey Championship: Team Sweden preview

When Rasmus Bergqvist was selected in the seventh round by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2024 NHL Draft, not many people knew who he was. Many still don’t — and that includes most Swedish hockey writers. However, as the injury list grew for Skellefteå AIK, Bergqvist’s responsibilities increased and he’ running with his chance to play in the SHL.

Bergqvist reminds me a lot about former Canadien Peter Popovic, though tougher and meaner, and his game should suit the North American rinks. He is stable defensively and plays that game very well. It will be interesting to see him against his peers.

His solid defensive game was a perfect match to the offensive flair that his defence partner, Axel Sandin-Pellikka, provides. That said, his game is sound enough on its own that he could play with any of the defencemen as the secure lock and that pairing would be one of the cornerstones of Team Sweden in this tournament

    Strengths

While Bergqvist is an important piece, Sandin-Pellikka is the star of the team. The returning defenceman was selected as the best blue-liner in previous World Under-18 and Under-20 tournaments. He leads the SHL in points by a defenceman by three, ahead of more seasoned professionals. His overall game has become even better compared to last year, and Sweden’s offence will continue to run through him.

Tom Willander and Theo Lindstein will bring some high-quality defence into the tournament, but even with their pedigree they will be in the shadow of Sandin-Pellikka from the outset. The question is if their star can be enough of a difference-maker to win gold.

Looking at the forwards, there are offensively gifted players such as Felix Unger Sörum, David Edstrom, and Otto Stenberg. Recognition is due for one my personal favourites, Felix Nilsson, for a great year in Rögle, and who has been on the Eyes On The Prize radar since before the 2023 NHL Draft.

Victor Eklund, a 2025 draft-eligible, will be the joker that Sweden will rise and fall with. He is top-10 ranked in all preliminary rankings for the upcoming NHL draft. He brings a lot to the table and 15 points (8G, 7A) in 28 games in Sweden’s HockeyAllsvenskan.

    Weaknesses

Sweden might have left its best goalie at home. Olof Glifford has had to play for HV71 in the SHL due to injuries, and he has been outstanding. He came in when HV71 was far in arrears in the table and has posted a .956 save percentage and 1.17 goals-against average in five games, with one shutout, dragging the team out the doldrums and into the fight to avoid the relegation series. Marcus Gidlöf has played eight games for Leksand and has been solid, bit not out-of-this-world hot like Glifford, and the other two goalies are there to make up numbers.

Sweden also has a lack of depth. For all the offensive flair that can be seen on the two top lines, the question is if the bottom two can keep it together. None of the names really scream success.

Since Magnus Hävelid took over as coach of the Swedish “Junior Crowns” he has finished third (2022), fourth (2023) and, last year, second. Those are impressive results to say the least, even if gold continues to elude the team. Hävelid has favoured the two-and-two approach: two lines to score and two lines to keep things clean. It doesn’t give a lot of options if injuries or lack of form hits, as the difference between the top and bottom of the squad is as wide as the Atlantic. I am also not sure about Hävelid’s strengths as a matchup coach. I rarely see him moving players up and down the lineup, or line-matching to success. This is partly up to team selection, and the lack of high-end depth in the Swedish system at the moment.

    Projection

Sweden will reach the playoffs for sure, but could meet the same fate as Canada at last year’s tournament and fall to a hot team in the quarter-finals. Sweden has the talent to reach the semis on the top two lines alone, however that’s what will dictate their level of success. The question is less about if they can claim the title, and more if Sweden will win a medal of any colour.

The 2025 World Junior Hockey Championship is just around the corner, and Team Sweden is gearing up to compete for the prestigious title. With a rich history of success in international competitions, Sweden is always a strong contender in junior hockey tournaments.

Led by head coach Johan Garpenlöv, Team Sweden boasts a talented roster of young and skilled players. The team is expected to showcase their trademark speed, skill, and teamwork on the ice, making them a formidable opponent for any team in the tournament.

Key players to watch include top NHL draft prospects, such as forward Lucas Raymond and defenseman Simon Edvinsson. Both players are known for their offensive prowess and defensive capabilities, making them crucial assets for Team Sweden’s success in the championship.

In goal, goaltender Jesper Wallstedt is expected to anchor the team’s defense with his exceptional reflexes and positioning. Wallstedt’s ability to make big saves in crucial moments will be vital for Team Sweden’s chances of lifting the trophy.

Overall, Team Sweden is shaping up to be a strong contender in the 2025 World Junior Hockey Championship. With a blend of skill, speed, and determination, the team is poised to make a deep run in the tournament and compete for the gold medal. Stay tuned for exciting games and memorable moments as Team Sweden takes on the world’s best junior hockey teams in pursuit of glory.

  • World Junior Championship roundup: Sandin-Pellikka has hat trick for Sweden in opener

World Junior Championship roundup: Sandin-Pellikka has hat trick for Sweden in opener

Thursday is the first day of the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, which is being held in Ottawa.

    Day 1 games:

Sweden 5, Slovakia 2Axel Sandin-Pellikka (Detroit Red Wings) had a hat trick and four points in a Group B game at TD Place.

The defenseman and Sweden captain had a natural hat trick, and Melker Thelin (Utah Hockey Club) made 15 saves. Felix Unger Sorum (Carolina Hurricanes), Otto Stenberg (St. Louis Blues) and David Granberg (2025 draft eligible) each had two assists.

Rasmus Bergqvist (Montreal Canadiens) and Linus Eriksson (Florida Panthers) also scored for Sweden, which lost 6-2 to the United States in the gold-medal game at the 2024 WJC on home ice in Gothenburg.

Dalibor Dvorsky (Blues) and Daniel Jencko (2025 draft eligible) scored, and Samuel Urban (2025 draft eligible) made 29 saves for Slovakia.

Dvorsky gave Slovakia a 1-0 lead 11:53 into the first period with a shot from the right circle. The defenseman, who is playing in the WJC for the fourth time, leads Springfield of the American Hockey League with 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists) in 27 games this season.

Bergqvist tied the game 1-1 at 3:41 of the second with a wrist shot from the left circle.

Sandin-Pellikka made it 2-1 with a power-play goal at 17:43 of the second, and increased the lead to 3-1 at 3:58 of the third.

He scored in the third at 14:01 for a 4-1 lead.

Eriksson made it 5-1 at 15:29 with a power-play goal.

Each team next plays Friday. Slovakia faces Switzerland (1 p.m. ET), and Sweden goes against Kazakhstan (5 p.m. ET).

    On Tap

Germany vs. United States (2:30 p.m. ET) — The U.S., last year’s champions, look to repeat as WJC gold medalists for the first time as they start play in Group A at Canadian Tire Centre. Seven players who got into at least one game last year return, led by goalie Trey Augustine (Detroit Red Wings), who allowed seven goals in six games last year and is considered the best at his position among the 10 teams. The offense likely will be led by an all-Boston College line of Ryan Leonard (Washington Capitals), Gabe Perreault (New York Rangers) and James Hagens, a candidate to be the No. 1 pick of the 2025 NHL Draft. The U.S. attack is deep, with forwards Cole Eiserman (New York Islanders), Trevor Connelly (Vegas Golden Knights) and Oliver Moore (Chicago Blackhawks) expected to be big contributors. Germany has one NHL-drafted player, defensive-minded defenseman Norwin Panocha (Buffalo Sabres), and could have a tough time creating offense as its top three scorers from last year won’t return. Forward Julius Sumpf (2025 draft eligible), who has 37 points (16 goals, 21 assists) in 29 games for Moncton of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, could be the go-to player.

Switzerland vs. Czechia (5 p.m. ET) — Czechia, playing its opener in Group B, will have seven players back from the team that defeated Finland to win the bronze medal at the 2024 WJC. That includes goalie Michal Hrabal (Utah Hockey Club), who made 28 saves in a 3-2 win against Canada in the quarterfinals but was pulled after allowing two goals on three shots in the first period of the bronze-medal game. This season he has a .917 save percentage as a sophomore at the University of Massachusetts. If he can carry that level of play into this year’s tournament Czechia, which finished second at the 2023 WJC, could take home a medal for a third straight tournament for the first time. Switzerland avoided relegation last year with a win against Norway in the preliminary round, and could be in the same situation this year. Switzerland scored 13 goals in five games last year and doesn’t have much in the way of returning offense. One player to watch could be forward Leo Braillard (2025 draft eligible), who scored one goal in five games last year and has 12 goals in 24 games this season with Lethbridge of the Western Hockey League. Switzerland also will have the youngest player in the tournament, 15-year-old Jonah Neuenschwander. He has 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists) in 26 games for Biel-Bienne’s team in Switzerland’s junior league and has played five games in National League, the country’s top league. He is eligible for the 2027 NHL Draft.

Canada vs. Finland (7:30 p.m. ET) — Canada should have ample motivation entering their Group A opener, playing at home after last year’s loss to Czechia in the quarterfinals and fifth-place finish. Canada has 10 first-round NHL draft picks on its roster, but its three players yet to be drafted that could have giant impacts. Forward Porter Martone and defenseman Matthew Schaefer are expected to be among the top four picks at the 2025 NHL Draft. Martone (6-3, 208) is a physical force who is second in the Ontario Hockey League with 54 points (21 goals, 33 assists) in 26 games as captain with Brampton. Schaefer is an offensive dynamo who might be the best skater in this year’s draft; he has 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) in 17 OHL games with Erie. And then there’s Gavin McKenna, who turned 17 on Dec. 20 and leads the Western Hockey League with 60 points (19 goals, 41 assists) in 30 games with Medicine Hat, and is the projected No. 1 pick of the 2026 NHL Draft. Finland will play its typical grinding style but should get big offensive contributions from forwards Konsta Helenius (Buffalo Sabres) and Kasper Halttunen (San Jose Sharks), each of whom played on last year’s fourth-place team and have played in the American Hockey League this season.

The World Junior Championship got off to an exciting start as Sweden’s top line of Rasmus Sandin and Kasper Pellikka combined for a hat trick in their opening game. Sandin, a Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, and Pellikka, a Dallas Stars prospect, showed off their offensive prowess in a 5-2 victory over Finland.

Sandin, a defenseman, opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period. He then added two more goals in the second period to complete the hat trick. Pellikka, a forward, assisted on all three of Sandin’s goals and added a goal of his own in the third period.

The dynamic duo’s performance was a key factor in Sweden’s victory and showcased their chemistry on the ice. With their impressive showing in the opener, Sandin and Pellikka have already made a strong statement in the tournament and will be players to watch as the World Junior Championship continues.

Stay tuned for more updates and highlights from the World Junior Championship as the tournament progresses.

  • 2025 World Junior Championship Group B preview

2025 World Junior Championship Group B preview

The 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship will be held in Ottawa, from Dec. 26-Jan. 5. Today, we preview the Group B preliminary-round bracket.

Sweden is looking for its first gold medal at the World Juniors since 2012, and powering that bid will be nine players who won a silver medal at the 2024 WJC.

That includes two St. Louis Blues prospects who should play significant roles, forward Otto Stenberg and defenseman Theo Lindstein.

Stenberg, selected by the Blues with the No. 25 pick of the 2023 NHL Draft, led Sweden with five goals in seven games at the 2024 WJC, and his nine points are the most among the returning players. Lindstein, the No. 29 pick of the 2023 draft, led all defensemen at the tournament with eight points (two goals, six assists) in seven games.

“For the group, they are my key players because they have good leadership and they’re both good, skilled players,” Sweden coach Magnus Havelid said. “So of course they can help us at big moments and to be a steady team.”

Lindstein has four points (two goals, two assists) in 23 games with Brynas in his first season in the Swedish Hockey League. Stenberg has six points (three goals, three assists) in 25 SHL games with Malmo.

“We’re great buddies outside the ice, and we have been together now for a couple of years here in the national team,” Lindstein said. “So it’s fun that we got drafted into the same team too. So it’s always nice to have a couple of guys here who have been here before, and so it’s always fun to have him here.”

Lindstein is expected to carry a heavy load on defense along with two other returning defensemen, Axel Sandin-Pellikka (Detroit Red Wings) and Tom Willander (Vancouver Canucks).

Sandin-Pellikka was voted the tournament’s best defenseman in 2024 after he had six points (two goals, four assists) in seven games. The 19-year-old leads SHL defensemen this season with 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) in 25 games with Skelleftea. Willander was a plus-9 while averaging 19:36 of ice time in seven games last year. He has nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 16 games as a sophomore at Boston University.

Besides Stenberg, returning are forwards David Edstrom (Nashville Predators), Felix Unger Sorum (Carolina Hurricanes), Zeb Forsfjall (Seattle Kraken), Anton Wahlberg (Buffalo Sabres), and goalie Melker Thelin (Utah Hockey Club).

“It’s good to have that experience when we come to Canada, to North America, and play on a smaller rink,” Havelid said. “It’s more learning by doing. We can transfer that to the other players as well.”

Here’s a look at each Group B team, in predicted order of finish:
