Pep Guardiola: Man City boss targets January and says ‘no chance’ of Premier League title

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City “need help” during the January transfer window after admitting his side have “no chance” of winning the Premier League title this season.

The City boss celebrated 500 games in charge of the club with a nervy 2-0 win over Leicester on Sunday.

City’s victory – just their second in their last 10 Premier League games – lifts them up to fifth, but they are 14 points behind leaders Liverpool.

“We are far away from winning the Premier League,” Guardiola told BBC’s Match of the Day.

“We accept there’s already no chance of that but we have other things to fight for: FA Cup, top four… and winning games helps.”

City have won six of the last seven Premier League titles, but before the win over Leicester, the club had won just one of their previous 13 league games – losing nine.

Guardiola admitted he was relieved to end a five-game winless run.

“Just relief, that is the word to express how all of us feel,” he said.

“We have done incredible things and now we struggle to win games so now it’s just relief.”

Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has set his sights on the January transfer window as he looks to strengthen his squad in a bid to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title.

Despite a strong start to the season, Guardiola has insisted that there is “no chance” of his team winning the league this year. The Spanish manager remains focused on improving his side and building for the future, rather than getting caught up in title talk.

Guardiola’s comments come after a string of impressive performances from his team, who currently sit in fourth place in the Premier League table. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss is known for his meticulous approach to management and is sure to be looking for ways to address any weaknesses in his squad during the upcoming transfer window.

With the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea looking strong at the top of the table, Guardiola knows that his team will have to be at their best if they are to have any chance of challenging for the title this season. However, the City boss remains confident in his team’s abilities and is determined to keep pushing for success.

As the January transfer window approaches, Guardiola will no doubt be looking to add some quality reinforcements to his squad as he looks to turn City’s season around. With his focus firmly on the future, Guardiola will be hoping that his team can continue to improve and close the gap on the teams above them in the league table.

Fantasy Football Storylines to watch in Week 17: Terry McLaurin gets another chance to show he’s matchup-proof

I could use a lot of words to describe this game we play.

The early season was exciting. Hope filled the minds of every gamer as they drafted and set their rosters. Back then, they knew this was their year. And early returns on popular dart throws like Rashid Shaheed and Chuba Hubbard boosted our confidence.

But then reality entered the conversation.

Injuries and swings in performance were frustrating. Apparently, New Orleans couldn’t sustain their 31.2 PPG pace after their hot start. Tee Higgins couldn’t get on the field until Week 3. The entire TE position needed a “national day” for us to stop wondering if we should invest high draft picks into them. But still, we trudged on through two “bye-pocalypses” (bye-pocalypsi?) to finally get to the playoffs, and one other word comes to mind.

    Cruel.

A friend messaged me that he had lost by 0.5 points after outbursts from Jayden Daniels and Jonathan Taylor. Another had Daniels and Lamar Jackson but still had to sweat out a 20-point lead, as his opponent had Josh Jacobs heading into MNF. There’s no reprieve. The rollercoaster doesn’t stop until we get through one final week of chaos.

And unsurprisingly, the storylines from Week 16 were the perfect prelude to Championship Week.

    Start your stars.

Honestly, this type of “sage-like” advice looks simplistic in hindsight. I mean, sure, Terry McLaurin is the WR5 on the season, has more TDs in ’24 than his last two campaigns combined and could set career-highs in receptions and yards with two games left. He checks most of the boxes to be a star. But I can’t think of another WR garnering more start/sit questions heading into Week 16.

Remember, Washington was facing Philadelphia for the second time. In their first meeting, McLaurin earned two targets. The Eagles’ secondary suffocated Jayden Daniels and held him under 200 passing yards for the second time as a rookie. Accordingly, the anchoring bias against starting McLaurin was real. So, of course, Washington’s WR1 gave us a top-12 moment when we needed it most.

Now, to be fair, McLaurin only had six looks from Daniels on the day. Olamide Zaccheaus led the Commanders with eight attempts and got some revenge on his former team. Jamison Crowder was the one who snagged the go-ahead score. So, McLaurin’s box score could’ve looked much different. However, his opportunity trend over the previous three weeks was enough to keep him in starting lineups.

    • Week 12: 18.0% (target share), 25.0% (air yard share), 0.0% (end-zone targets)

    • Week 13: 28.0%, 35.0%, 50.0%

    • Week 15: 36.0%, 75.0%, 100.0%

Noah Brown went on IR. Zach Ertz got concussed midway in Week 15. Daniels had fewer options. Watching McLaurin’s target share balloon was the signal he could perform in a tough matchup. Or, at the very least, Daniels would look to him when coverage allowed. And while CB Quinyon Mitchell has been one of the best rookie defenders, McLaurin got by him often enough to keep his (and our) playoff hopes alive.

Luckily, the Commanders have a lighter defense coming to Maryland on Sunday. The Falcons’ secondary has surrendered the fourth-most PPR PPG to opposing WRs. Coincidentally, they’re also susceptible to big plays. Jordan Addison and Justin Jefferson snuck by Atlanta for multiple touchdowns just a few weeks ago. Ladd McConkey worked the middle of the field for 117 yards. If McLaurin was more of a WR2 against the Eagles, he should firmly be in the top 12 to close out the fantasy playoffs.

I had to think about this one for a minute, but I think the best answer is Jalen McMillan.

The former Huskie spent his first two games back after a hamstring injury watching Mike Evans re-establish himself as one of the premiere WRs in the NFL. Since then, he’s settled into a strong WR2 role in Tampa. Over the last three weeks, McMillan has top-20 marks in receiving yards and touchdowns on 6.7 targets per game. Assuming Chris Godwin’s ankle surgery holds him out until the middle of the 2025 season, McMillan may be the ADP frontrunner in offseason drafts. However, McMillan’s path to work is obscure, and some people (i.e., me) won’t feel as comfortable starting a rookie WR2 during the playoffs. So, here are two other candidates for unsung hero.

I was grimacing while it happened, but Tyjae Spears’ first TD against Cincinnati had style to it. Tony Pollard had re-aggravated his ankle injury after multiple missed practices, opening up more work for Spears. And even with Pollard active these last two weeks, Spears has been on the field more often than Tennessee’s RB1.

    • Snap Rate: 36.0% (Weeks 1-14), 57.0% (Weeks 15 & 16)

    • Rushing Share: 26.0%, 30.0%

    • Target Share: 8.0%, 14.0%

Pollard’s wallet might prefer he plays, but his practice participation (or lack thereof) will likely tell us a different story. Regardless, Spears’ usage as a goal-line option and receiver is worth rostering. A rematch against the Jaguars, who Pollard ran over for 102 yards, puts Spears in FLEX territory. He’d be the most unlikely savior for rosters competing for a championship, but still, another came to mind.

I don’t know what Kendre Miller said or did to former HC Dennis Allen. But it was enough to wind up in Allen’s doghouse and on IR. However, Alvin Kamara’s groin injury has thrust the TCU product into the RB1 spotlight. And while the boxscore doesn’t highlight his impact, Miller has been as efficient as the Saints’ primary rusher.

    • Rushing Success Rate: 57.1% (Miller), 45.6% (Kamara)

    • Forced Missed Tackle Rate: 39.3%, 18.0%

    • Explosive Run Rate: 25.0%, 15.6%

Unfortunately, Miller had to face the Packers on Monday night. Yes, Jordan Mims scored more PPR points (8.2 to 5.1). But Miller ran into more stacked boxes and was the only NOLA RB to break a tackle. So, let’s look at Week 17.

He’ll get to run into (more like run past) a Raiders’ Maxx Crosby-less defensive front that’s allowed the 13th-most rushing yards per game since their Week 10 bye. You’d have to go back to Week 1 to find an RB with double-digit carries and wind up with fewer than 10 PPR points against the Raiders (Gus Edwards, 11 carries for 26 yards).

So, while most of the stars from the ’24 season will be in your starting spots, these unsung RB heroes (and other RBs like Gus Edwards and Jerome Ford) to close out playoff runs will be the key to hoisting a title.

If you didn’t watch Michael Penix Jr.’s first game, his interception got the most buzz:

Box score scouts will come away with lukewarm takes. He didn’t throw a touchdown. We don’t get points for handoffs that turn into TDs. But that analysis misses a couple of key takeaways. For instance, the play-calling shifted in Penix’s debut.

    • Plays per Game: 63.1 (Weeks 1-15), 65.0 (Week 16)

    • Play-Action Rate: 7.6%, 9.2%

    • Dropback Over Expectation Rate: -5.0%, -2.0%

Admittedly, it’s a one-game sample. Regardless, more plays and more pass attempts relative to the game situation (i.e., down, distance, score, etc.) were expectations we had for the offense heading into the season. And despite establishing a two-possession lead by the half, Penix had an 84.6% dropback rate in the final two quarters. In addition, he looked immediately comfortable with the passing concepts.

One of the concerns about Penix coming out of college was his ability to throw over the middle of the field. His 49.1% MoF throw rate was the lowest in this year’s class. However, Penix was able to connect with Drake London on in-breaking routes while still showing off his arm strength. At a mark of 0.16 EPA per dropback, Penix was more efficient than Kirk Cousins had been in six games.

Week 17 offers a similar environment.

Washington’s defensive front was able to make things difficult for Kenny Pickett on Sunday (43.3% pressure rate, 53.3% blitz rate). However, his receivers (outside of an untimely drop from DeVonta Smith) kept the offense moving. London and Darnell Mooney can do the same. So, while Penix shouldn’t be a QB in starting rosters for playoff teams, the rookie QB showed enough to make his WRs viable options for Week 17.

The prevailing wisdom for rostering players in projected blowouts is they should be part of why their team has a lead. Like, if the Bengals score 30 points, you’d assume Ja’Marr Chase got in on the action. Or, apparently, the Ravens’ success hinges on Derrick Henry rushing for more than 100 yards. Anyway, both examples highlight why the end of MNF wasn’t too much of a shock.

My condolences to anyone needing a miracle from Christian Watson or Romeo Doubs. But Spencer Rattler and a Kamara-less skill-position group weren’t going to force Green Bay into a fight. However, the beatdown should force us to re-examine the Packers’ tendencies on offense.

    • Passing Attempts per Game: 29.1, 27th (out of 34 qualifying starters – min. 200 dropbacks since Week 4)

    • Early-Down Passing Rate: 43.9%, 31st

    • Dropback Over Expectation Rate: -6.0%, T-29th

I mentioned the Bengals and Ravens earlier, as they encapsulate the two play-calling extremes. Joe Burrow lives in shotgun formations, and Lamar Jackson (literally) runs away from the competition. Regardless, knowing how each operates gives us an indication of what they’ll do to generate a lead. With Green Bay sitting in the latter offensive category, the WRs were at risk heading into Monday night. The week prior already presented us with red flags.

    • Romeo Doubs: 19.0% (target share), 19.0 (PPR points)

    • Jayden Reed: 23.0%, 11.1

    • Christian Watson: 23.0%, 8.6

The guys with the most targets generated the fewest fantasy points. It was Romeo Doubs coming down with two scores warranting FLEX consideration. However, in that same game, Jordan Love’s 28 dropbacks were the 10th-fewest of any starter. Green Bay had already established a multi-score lead by halftime, limiting its need to pass. It has given us its blueprint of how it responds to being in the driver’s seat. And it puts a cap on its passing game.

But Week 17 will be a different environment.

Love and company are traveling to Minnesota to face the Vikings. Sam Darnold’s crew ranks ninth in points scored per game on the season, and they’ve put up less than 20 points in a game just once since November. They’re the ideal opponent to push the Packers into a throwing contest. It’s not like they haven’t done it before. Plus, with Christian Watson’s knee injury, Reed and Doubs become more favorable options for fantasy managers looking for ceiling options in the fantasy finale.

As we head into the final week of the NFL regular season, fantasy football managers are keeping a close eye on some key storylines that could impact their championship hopes. One player who has been turning heads all season is Washington Football Team wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

McLaurin has emerged as one of the top fantasy wide receivers in the league, consistently putting up big numbers regardless of the matchup. In Week 17, McLaurin will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles, a team that he has historically performed well against.

With Washington fighting for a playoff spot, McLaurin will once again have the opportunity to show that he is truly matchup-proof. Fantasy managers who have relied on him all season will be hoping for another standout performance to carry them to victory in their championship matchups.

Keep an eye on McLaurin in Week 17 as he looks to solidify his status as one of the top fantasy assets in the league.

  • Former Alabama receiver to get another chance for his first NFL catch

Former Alabama receiver to get another chance for his first NFL catch

Tyrell Shavers has played in two regular-season games during his NFL career. He came up as a Buffalo Bills’ practice-squad elevation for a 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans on Oct. 6 and a 30-20 victory over the Indianpolis Colts on Nov. 10.

Shavers played 22 offensive snaps in the two games without quarterback Josh Allen throwing him the football. On Saturday, the Bills announced Shavers would be elevated to active status for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

Each NFL team can elevate two members of its practice squad to active status for each game. Shavers is up on Sunday with Buffalo wide receiver Curtis Samuel questionable to play because of a rib injury.

In three seasons at Alabama, Shavers had one reception and scored a touchdown on a blocked punt. After a redshirt year, he played in 28 games in 2018 and 2019 for Alabama.

Shavers had nine receptions after transferring to Mississippi State in 2020, then he played at San Diego State for two seasons. After catching 38 passes for 643 yards and three touchdowns for the Aztecs in 2022, Shavers signed with the Bills as a rookie free agent.

Shavers spent the 2023 NFL season on Buffalo’s practice squad without playing in a regular-season game, and he has been back in that role in 2024.

Two more players with Alabama football roots were elevated for Sunday’s games.

The Tennessee Titans elevated offensive lineman Chandler Brewer (Florence) for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with right guard Dillon Radunz out with a shoulder injury.

Brewer most recently played in an NFL regular-season game on Dec. 10, 2023, when he was with the Jaguars.

The Las Vegas Raiders elevated tight end John Samuel Shenker (Auburn) for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Shenker has played in six games for the Raiders in 2024, getting 61 defensive snaps and 78 special-teams plays.

The Philadelphia Eagles will have defensive end Bryce Huff (St. Paul’s Episcopal) available on Sunday for the first time since Nov. 14 after activating him from injured reserve. A wrist injury kept Huff out of Philadelphia’s past five games. But he returned to practice on Dec. 18 and will be eligible to play against the Dallas Cowboys.

Former Alabama receiver, John Doe, is set to get another chance at achieving his first NFL catch. After going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, Doe was signed by the New York Giants but was ultimately waived before the start of the season.

Despite the setback, Doe has continued to work hard and stay in shape, waiting for another opportunity to showcase his talents on the field. And now, his perseverance has paid off as he has been signed by the Seattle Seahawks to their practice squad.

Doe’s speed, route-running, and hands make him a promising prospect for the Seahawks, and he is eager to prove himself and make the most of this second chance. With his determination and dedication, there’s no doubt that he will make the most of this opportunity and finally secure his first NFL catch.

Stay tuned to see John Doe in action and watch as he takes full advantage of this second chance to make his mark in the NFL.

  • Buffalo Bills RB has chance at major franchise record

Buffalo Bills RB has chance at major franchise record

The Buffalo Bills have a lot to play for heading into the final two weeks of the 2024 NFL season. While they can no longer win the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoff picture, they’re still fighting for No. 2.

One win in their final two games would secure that position for them in the playoffs.

James Cook, the Bills’ rising star running back, is also chasing something over the next two games. He’s looking to break a major franchise record.

Heading into this week’s game against the New York Jets, Cook is just one rushing touchdown shy of tying Josh Allen’s 15-touchdown mark that is second-best in franchise history. With two rushing touchdowns, he would tie the all-time record of 16 in a season currently held by O.J. Simpson.

Needless to say, that’s just a testament to how good Cook has been throughout the year.

During the 2024 season thus far, Cook has racked up 182 carries for 928 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also has caught 32 passes for 258 yards and two more touchdowns.

At just 25 years old, Cook is starting to become an elite back. He has taken a lot of pressure off of Allen and the passing game. Buffalo will need a lot more of that ground production.

Looking ahead to this week’s game, the Jets have a defense that could be exposed. The Bills are also coming off of an offensive performance that they were not happy with last week.

There is good reason to believe that the Buffalo offense could be primed to explode against New York.

Cook could very well end up scoring two touchdowns this week. If he can do that, he would have a chance to make franchise history with just one score in Week 18.

Hopefully, he will be able to make history this season. Cook has put in a lot of hard work and seeing him get rewarded with the franchise record would put the cherry on top of what has been an amazing third season from him.

Buffalo Bills running back Devin Singletary has the opportunity to make history this season as he inches closer to breaking a major franchise record. Singletary, who has been a standout player since joining the Bills in 2019, is on pace to surpass the single-season rushing record set by Thurman Thomas in 1990.

Thomas, a Hall of Fame running back, rushed for 1,297 yards during the 1990 season, a mark that has stood for over three decades. Singletary has already shown his potential as a dynamic rusher, and with the support of the Bills’ strong offensive line, he has a legitimate chance to rewrite the team’s record books.

As the Bills continue their push towards the playoffs, all eyes will be on Singletary as he aims to etch his name in Buffalo Bills history. Fans can expect an exciting finish to the season as Singletary looks to solidify his place among the franchise’s elite running backs. Stay tuned for updates on his quest for the record! #GoBills #RecordBreaker

  • New Orleans weather forecast chance of severe weather tornadoes

New Orleans weather forecast chance of severe weather tornadoes

Severe storms are possible in the New Orleans weather forecast through Saturday

Threats of heavy rain, lightning, strong winds, large hail, and tornadoes are possible

REMAINS LOW. WDSU FIRST WARNING WEATHER IMPACT DAY FOR FOG RIGHT NOW. AN ALERT DAY TOMORROW FOR THE THREAT FOR SEVERE STORMS. SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE THE CRESCENT CITY CONNECTION BEHIND ME, BUT THAT’S THAT’S GOING TO BE OBSCURED FROM THE FOG. HERE ARE THE VISIBILITY REPORTS. LESS THAN A 10TH OF A MILE AT THE AIRPORT RIGHT NOW. I WAS JUST CHECKING OUT SOME ARRIVALS AT MSI AT LOUIS ARMSTRONG INTERNATIONAL, AND THERE HAVE BEEN SOME DELAYS. I’VE SEEN SOME THAT WERE SET FOR A LITTLE BIT LATER. THIS COULD BE FROM OTHER AIRPORTS COMING IN, BUT WHEN YOU’VE GOT VISIBILITY THAT IS OBSCURED, YOU’RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO LAND PLANES IN THAT. SO I WANT YOU TO BE AWARE IF YOU’VE GOT LATE FLIGHTS COMING IN, IF YOU’RE TRYING TO TAKE OFF DOWN TO A MILE VISIBILITY IN THE HAMMOND, HALF A MILE INTO HOUMA, DENSE FOG ADVISORY IS ALREADY IN PLACE, AND THAT DENSE FOG ADVISORY WILL GO UNTIL 10 A.M. TOMORROW MORNING. IT INCLUDES THE LAKES, TOO. THEY’RE JUST NOT SHOWN IN SOME OF THE OUTER WATERS HERE AS WELL. WE STILL HAVE SOME STORM ACTIVITY TO TALK ABOUT, THOUGH. AT THIS TIME OF NIGHT. THIS IS SOMETHING THE FORECAST DATA HAVEN’T REALLY PICKED UP ON, BUT LOWER PLAQUEMINES TO NAIRN VENICE MARINA BOOTHVILLE GETTING SOME HEFTY STORMS. ONE STORM THAT MOVED ON SHORE THAT WAS SOUTHWEST OF HOUMA. THAT’S NOT DOING MUCH HERE. WE LOOK AT WHAT’S UP FOR THE STRONGEST STORMS. YOU CAN SEE AS YOU GO TO OUTER SAINT BERNARD PARISH AND MORE SOME RURAL AREAS. BUT THERE IT IS AS WE HEAD TOWARDS THE SMALLER COMMUNITIES TO PORT SULFUR, GRAND BAYOU, NAIRN, EMPIRE, VENICE, DE BURAS GETTING SOME OF THAT HEFTY STORM. AND THAT’S WHERE THE WORST OF THEM ARE. TONIGHT, WHEN I WAS JUST SAYING OUR FORECAST DATA, WE’RE NOT PICKING UP ON THIS STORM ACTIVITY. BUT LATELY THEY STARTED TO CHIME IN ONTO IT AND SHOW THAT THIS STORM ACTIVITY DOES THE SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST MOVEMENT AND STAYS MORE EAST OF NEW ORLEANS. WE WILL GO FROM THERE. IN THIS PARTICULAR FORECAST. SO WHERE WE STAND WITH MILD WEATHER IN PLACE AND THOSE TEMPERATURES VERY CLOSE TO THE DEW POINTS HERE TO WE’RE 60S OR 70S STILL 71 AT THE AIRPORT, 69 LAKEFRONT AND THOSE ARE ALMOST EXACTLY WHERE THE DEW POINT TEMPERATURES ARE. SO WE’VE FORMED CLOUDS AND WE’VE PUT IT ON THE GROUND AND THAT’S FOG. SO WHERE DO WE STAND IN THE WAY OF STORM SYSTEMS? AND WHAT BRINGS THIS RISK FOR POSSIBLE SEVERE WEATHER INTO THE ALERT DAY TOMORROW? WELL, THIS STORM IS MOVING AWAY. IT’S INTO THE UPPER MIDWEST. BUT THIS STORM REALLY MOVES QUICKLY AND IT TAPS INTO THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY. WE’VE GOT STRONG WINDS ALOFT THAT ARE COMING UP AT ABOUT 30,000FT TO ADD MORE LIFT, MORE ENERGY TO THE ATMOSPHERE. AND THAT AREA OF LOW PRESSURE TO BEING SO CLOSE TO US PROVIDES SOME OF THAT WORST SPIN AT GROUND LEVEL. SO WE DO HAVE AN ELEVATED TORNADO RISK HERE TOO. SO LET’S JUMP RIGHT INTO THE FORECAST. I WANT TO GIVE YOU THE TIMING AND EXACTLY WHAT THE THREATS WILL BE FOR YOU. LATEST SHORT TERM DATA. THIS ONE LINES UP PRETTY WELL TO SHOW, AS I JUST DESCRIBED, SOUTHWEST NORTHEASTWARD MOVEMENT. BUT MAYBE SOME MORNING STORMS START TO FIRE AS SOON AS WE’RE GETTING TO SUNRISE. BUT THE FOG WILL OBSCURE THAT AS EVERYBODY HAS SEEN THAT FOG START TO FORM AND JUST CONFIRM WITH THE DATA THAT WE’VE GOT THICK AND DENSE FOG ALL NIGHT TONIGHT. BE REALLY, REALLY CAREFUL. THE CAUSEWAY TWIN SPANS. IT LOOKS TO BE THE BONNIE. KERRY IS THE WORST OF IT RIGHT NOW. 60S TO START OFF TOMORROW MORNING. AND THE LEVEL THREE RISK FOR PARTS OF THE NORTH SHORE. LEVEL TWO AND A LEVEL ONE RISK FOR SEVERE WEATHER THREATS. WE CALL THOSE ENHANCED SLIGHT AND MARGINAL. WHAT DOES THIS REALLY MEAN. THOSE ARE ELEVATED RISKS FOR POSSIBLE SEVERE STORMS, WHICH IS WHY WE’VE ALREADY MADE IT AN ALERT DAY. HERE’S THE STORM POTENTIAL. SOME MORNING STORMS HERE, BUT THEY’RE NOT EXPECTED TO BE ALL THAT STRONG BY ABOUT 2:00 IN THE NORTH SHORE. WE DO SEE A FEW STRONGER STORMS TRYING TO POP UP AND GET GOING. BUT AFTER 6 P.M., THE MAIN ROUND OF STORMS COMING IN NORTH SHORE RIVER PARISHES FIRST, AND THEN AS WE GET 8 TO 10:00, WE SEE THOSE STORMS COMING IN NEW ORLEANS. HEFTY STORMS AROUND PONCHATOULA TO HAMMOND, EVEN MAYBE CAREER IN POPLARVILLE. AND THEN AS WE GO TO THE EARLY MORNING HOURS, THE STORMS ARE FINALLY STARTING TO GO AWAY. SO THE TIMING FOR MOST OF US AFTER 6 P.M. TOMORROW, THAT’S WHERE THE WORST OF THE STORMS COULD BE HERE, STILL WITH VERY HEAVY RAIN ONE, TWO AND THREE INCHES POSSIBLE. IT IS WARM AND HUMID AND BREEZY HERE TOO, ADDING THE ENERGY TO THE ATMOSPHERE SO HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WIND GUSTS POTENTIAL TOP MY THREAT LIST. WE EVEN HAVE LARGE HAIL POTENTIAL OF THE SIZE OF ONE INCH OR LARGER, BUT THE TORNADO THREAT IS STILL ELEVATED. IT’S NOT AT A HIGH THREAT, BUT IT IS STILL THERE. SO THE NORTH SHORE REALLY NEEDS TO BE ON GUARD. REALLY WATCH THE ELEVATED TORNADO RISK IN NUMEROUS STRONG STORMS. BESIDES, THE TORNADO RISK ARE EXPECTED TO, WHICH IS WHY IT’S THE WDSU FIRST WARNING WEATHER ALERT DAY. METEOROLOGIST JIM STEIN COMING IN. I’LL GIVE HIM A HAND. METEOROLOGIST RAVEN RICHARD JOINS IN THE AFTERNOON EVENING. ONCE THEY’RE DONE ON SATURDAY. THE STORMS, THAT IS. WE’RE DOWN TO 72 FOR SAINT SUNDAY AND LESS HUMID. SHOU

Severe storms are possible in the New Orleans weather forecast through Saturday

Threats of heavy rain, lightning, strong winds, large hail, and tornadoes are possible

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a severe weather outlook for portions of our area on Saturday. The WDSU First Warning Weather Team has identified Saturday as a Weather ALERT Day for the threat of severe storms. One round of severe storms passed through early Friday morning, including a confirmed tornado in St. Tammany Parish between Audubon and Talisheek. Saturday will be our likeliest chance of possible severe weather where parts of the Northshore are already under a level 3 out of 5, or Enhanced risk for severe storms with threats of severe winds over 58 mph, large hail of 1″ in size or larger, and possible tornadoes.Notice that Greater New Orleans is under a level 2 out of 5 categories, or Slight Risk for possible severe weather, while the coast is under a level 1, marginal risk for severe storms. In these scenarios, most of the worst of the severe weather should stay well north of us in Northern Louisiana and Mississippi. However, the Northshore is where storms are likely to fire up first, then track into Mississippi providing a brief window where storms could quickly reach severe limits possibly producing a tornado or two.The latest data show it’s after 6 PM where the main cluster of storms will enter the Northshore and pose the greatest risk of severe weather. These storms are forecast to move southeast and could impact the New Orleans metro late Saturday night. The greatest risk for severe weather will be locally heavy rain, followed by strong winds over 58 mph, then large hail 1″ in size or larger, and a few tornadoes. The biggest takeaways are knowing the Northshore has the highest chance for severe weather on Saturday. I do expect numerous strong to severe storms and the tornado risk is elevated for us.Right now, it looks like most of the South Shore south of I-10 is under the least threat from strong to severe storms. However, everyone needs to monitor this evolving forecast closely in case location and timing of storms change.

The biggest takeaways are knowing the Northshore has the highest chance for severe weather on Saturday. I do expect numerous strong to severe storms and the tornado risk is elevated for us.

    what you need to know

Right now, it looks like most of the South Shore south of I-10 is under the least threat from strong to severe storms. However, everyone needs to monitor this evolving forecast closely in case location and timing of storms change.

  • Armed Forces Bowl preview: OU’s young guys get a chance to shine

Armed Forces Bowl preview: OU’s young guys get a chance to shine

FORT WORTH, Texas — During Thursday’s press conference, Brent Venables established the theme for this year’s Armed Forces Bowl.

There’s going to be a lot of young guys on the field for the Sooners.

With more than 20 players either entering the portal or opting out of the bowl game against Navy (11 a.m. Friday, ESPN), .the Sooners’ roster is a bit depleted. Venables announced there are 56 scholarship players available for the game, and 24 of them are freshman. The freshmen make up half of the scholarship players available on offense.

Playing freshmen isn’t unfamiliar for the Sooners. Led by notable first-year players like Jayden Jackson and Eli Bowen, underclassmen accounted for more than 8,000 snaps during the regular season. But there are a noticeable amount of true freshmen sprinkled throughout the depth chart.

“I’ve watched these guys grow up through their opportunity,” Venables said. “I’ve watched them fail and learn from it, bounce right back. I’ve really appreciated some of our veterans on our team that have helped these guys grow up and understand what the standards are, what the expectations are and how we do what we do.

“So, from that standpoint, going into next year, that’ll really be huge, but the last couple of weeks you can see the growth where these guys started the year, where they individually got their different opportunities and where they are.”

On offense, the Sooners will have a pair of redshirt freshmen in Heath Ozaeta and Logan Howland starting on the offense line. There will be a ton of first-year players at the skill positions — Zion Ragins, Ivan Carreon and Jacob Jordan will all play a ton of snaps at wide receiver, while Xavier Robinson and Taylor Tatum should see some snaps at running back. With the departure of Bauer Sharp, true freshman tight end Davon Mitchell could see his first snaps of the season.

But the most obvious is Michael Hawkins, who will be making his fourth collegiate start with the departure of Jackson Arnold to Auburn.

“I think it’s gonna be awesome,” OU center Troy Everett said of Hawkins. “Especially right now, he’s got to make some things happen. We obviously don’t have the team that we had at the beginning of the year. So it’s a great opportunity for him to go out there and show really what he’s about. All eyes are on him.”

On defense, the new faces will be particularly evident in the secondary, particularly in the absences of Billy Bowman, Dez Malone and Kani Walker. Of the nine players listed at either safety or cornerback, five of them are true freshman.

Eli Bowen emerged as a building block at cornerback earlier in the season. But other young players like Michael Boganowski, Jaydan Hardy and Devon Jordan should see real opportunities against Navy.

“(We got) another a couple of weeks for (Michael Boganowski) and (Jaydan Hardy) who we feel are going to be outstanding players. Or you look outside at Jeremiah Newcombe and (Jordan), those guys have really benefited from not just watching guys take reps at practice but actually going out and kind of living and dying in all the moments the last couple of weeks.”

On the defensive line, there should be more opportunities for true freshman David Stone, who played a small role off the bench this season. Venables even mentioned there could be opportunities for players like Danny Okoye and Taylor Wein, who didn’t see the field much this season.

Veterand Kobie McKinzie and Kip Lewis will lead things at linebacker with Danny Stutsman opting out and Dasan McCullough heading to Nebraska. But there should be opportunities for underclassmen like Lewis Carter and Sammy Omosigho, who had roles during the season but should see their snap totals increase significantly.

“Lewis and Sammy will forever be my guys,” McKinzie said. “They came in under the same type of situation that me and Kip did. They came in together. They’ve had the growing pains together. Sammy has some more reps, a couple of more starts. He’s able to nurture Lewis in a better way. Lewis will be able to take that better from him than a guy like me. I love those guys to death. They have just continuously grown.”

It hasn’t been the ideal season for the Sooners (6-6), who are looking to snag their seventh win and avoid their second losing season in three years. And while winning is the primary focus, the bowl game should present a real opportunity for the young players on the roster.

Plus, it could be a glimpse at what the future has to offer.

“Great opportunity across the board, really, (for all the) freshmen that are sprinkled in,” Venables said. “So the practices have been great. I think because of a couple of the guys that are no longer here, it’s created more of a sense of urgency, required more attentiveness and the details that go along with playing at a really high level.”

“No question that the last few weeks, and all the reps that those guys have been able to get will be huge not only for this game, but in particular, moving forward to next year.”

The Armed Forces Bowl is just around the corner and the Oklahoma Sooners are gearing up to take on the Missouri Tigers in what promises to be an exciting matchup. One of the key storylines heading into this game is the opportunity for OU’s young players to step up and make a name for themselves on the national stage.

With several key players opting out of the bowl game to focus on the NFL draft, the Sooners will be relying on their younger talent to fill the void. This presents a golden opportunity for these players to showcase their skills and prove that they have what it takes to compete at the highest level.

One player to keep an eye on is freshman quarterback Caleb Williams, who has shown flashes of brilliance in limited playing time this season. With starting QB Spencer Rattler transferring to South Carolina, Williams will have the chance to lead the Sooners’ offense and demonstrate his potential as a future star.

On the defensive side of the ball, redshirt freshman defensive back Billy Bowman Jr. will be looking to make an impact against Missouri’s potent passing attack. Bowman has shown versatility and playmaking ability throughout the season, and he will be counted on to step up in a big way in this bowl game.

Overall, the Armed Forces Bowl presents a fantastic opportunity for Oklahoma’s young players to gain valuable experience and prove themselves on a national stage. With the spotlight shining brightly on them, these players have the chance to make a statement and set the tone for the future of the program. Be sure to tune in and see how these young guys rise to the occasion in what promises to be a thrilling showdown between the Sooners and the Tigers.

  • Thursday brings another chance for storms to the Brazos Valley

Thursday brings another chance for storms to the Brazos Valley

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – After a stormy Christmas Eve, we will get a short reprieve for Christmas Day, before the atmosphere fires off some more storms on Thursday.

    SETUP:

A warm and muggy airmass will linger over the Brazos Valley for the remainder of 2024, providing a conducive environment for active weather. A deep area of low pressure will slide across North Texas Thursday afternoon, helping to get storms up and going, as a cold front trails behind. While the threat for severe weather is present all across the Brazos Valley, a more elevated concern exists east of Highway 6.

Rain and rumbles are expected to impact the Brazos Valley on Thursday
Rain and rumbles are expected to impact the Brazos Valley on Thursday(kbtx)

    TIMING:

Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will likely begin Thursday morning. The amount of rain we receive earlier in the day will be a key factor in the intensity of afternoon/evening storms. With that being said, as of Wednesday evening, model data is on board with increasing storms through the afternoon, before they exit east around dinnertime.

Thursday Storm Timeline - December 26
Thursday Storm Timeline – December 26(kbtx)

    IMPACTS:

Thunderstorm development requires three main ingredients: moisture, instability, and lift. All of which will exist across the Brazos Valley on Thursday. A fourth ingredient that is often associated with severe weather will also be present – shear. Strong low-level shear will support the production of damaging winds and hail, along with rotating supercells capable of generating tornadoes. All severe hazards will be possible. While this is not a widespread concern, but it is something we will monitor very closely.

Please have multiple ways to receive weather alerts on Thursday. Your KBTX Weather App is an excellent resource, just ensure that your location and notifications are turned on!

Get ready, Brazos Valley! Thursday is shaping up to be another day filled with thunderstorms and potentially severe weather. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for our area, so it’s important to stay weather aware throughout the day.

Make sure to have a plan in place in case of severe weather, including knowing where your safe shelter is located and having an emergency kit ready. Stay tuned to local weather updates and be prepared to take action if necessary.

Stay safe, Brazos Valley, and don’t let the storms catch you off guard. Let’s all be prepared and stay vigilant as we navigate another round of potentially severe weather.
