WNBA free agency chaos lies more in players’ hands than ever before

Since news broke of that tentative deal earlier this week – which was made official on the first day of the WNBA free agency signing period Saturday – many other high-profile players have decided to suit up for different teams in 2025.
Alyssa Thomas is expected to sign with the Phoenix Mercury after spending the first 11 years of her WNBA career with the Connecticut Sun. She’ll be playing alongside Satou Sabally, who was moved to Phoenix as part of another major three-team trade.
Longtime Mercury center and nine-time All-Star Brittney Griner landed on the Atlanta Dream as her next destination, where she’ll team up with Brionna Jones who left Connecticut this offseason after eight seasons.

But this trend of massive player movement in free agency has been ramping up for several years now. It’s partly due to players being more empowered than ever to dictate where they want to play.
“That’s just the evolution of the league and what we’re seeing basketball and women’s sports going,” Loyd said. “There’s definitely a lot more freedom and things happening and changes.
“For me personally, I just think that you want to always find ways to improve and get better. That’s what I’m trying to do every single day and that led me to be a part of the Aces. And so I just think that’s just the evolution of where the league is going.”
In some ways, the player movement is also sending a message to teams to get with the program or you’ll be left behind.
Some players, including Sabally, forced their way out of their current situations in search for better environments and player experiences.
Not every WNBA team has its own training facility with first-rate amenities.
In last year’s playoffs, the Sun infamously had a practice disrupted by a 2-year-old’s birthday party, which Thomas called “the ultimate disrespect.”
Being a part of Unrivaled this offseason opened Thomas’ eyes even more to the disparity in what Connecticut doesn’t offer its players.
“We don’t have any of this kind of stuff in Connecticut from the medical equipment to the cold tubs, the chefs, we don’t have anything like that in Connecticut,” Thomas said. “So that’s what we were accustomed to but being here and seeing how these kinds of things feel, I mean, it’s definitely a different experience for me…
“We’re pro-level athletes. You need these things to take care of your body to be successful and in Connecticut, we haven’t had any of that.”
Aces president Nikki Fargas said free agency also has benefited from increased investment from WNBA teams, including restructuring front offices and bolstering coaching staffs.

Most players will be signing only one-year deals because the new collective bargaining agreement that is expected to bring massive salary bumps is slated to come into effect in 2026.
The WNBA is also expected to add expansion teams in Toronto and Portland next season.
“We’re growing and expanding and bringing more teams, I think the opportunities are going to be limitless for the franchises to be able to put together quality rosters because we’re getting quality players in this league,” Fargas said. “Not only are we using the pipeline of players that are coming from the collegiate level but also internationally.”

The impact touched all corners of the country, with state Medicaid funding portals briefly shuttered and programs like Meals on Wheels and Head Start scrambling to figure out if they were about to lose their funding.
The White House insisted that the confusion was a media-led creation. But on Wednesday the Office of Management and Budget issued a terse two-sentence memo rescinding the directive it had issued just two days prior, and just over 20 hours after a federal judge ordered a halt to the freeze.
The withdrawal of the federal freeze was a stunning about-face for President Donald Trump’s White House, which has so far pushed the envelope to reshape the federal government, sowing chaos and confusion in firing career civil servants, pausing foreign aid programs and offering federal workers a buyout.
The episode underscored the risks of a White House adopting the tech-inspired tactic to “move fast and break things” in its effort to remake the federal government with a flurry of actions in its first 10 days.
Congressional Republicans were privately frustrated they weren’t given a heads up at a decision that stirred a direct deluge of outrage from constituents. The administration received a flood of calls from lawmakers and state officials with questions about its impact on their home states.
“We were in the dark, like everyone else,” a Republican senator told CNN, speaking of the freeze on the condition of anonymity to avoid alienating the West Wing. “That was unfortunate and unnecessary.”
In the hours that followed the initial release of the memo on Monday afternoon, CNN spoke to more than a dozen senior officials across five agencies, lawmakers and senior aides to Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill. The confusion was universal and answers were non-existent, the officials said.

“We are merely looking at parts of the big bureaucracy where there has been tremendous waste and fraud and abuse,” Trump said during his first bill-signing ceremony on an unrelated immigration law.
It was a dizzying series of events that offered a telling window into the new Washington order. The White House dismissed any signs of frustration and blamed the media, rather than accept responsibility, for a wave of backlash from Republicans and Democrats alike.
“I can’t help it if left-wing media outlets published a fake news story that caused confusion,” Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff for policy, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday.

But with Wednesday’s reversal, the administration made clear it was not eager to wage a legal fight in this case over the president’s expansive view of executive power in his quest to purge the government of what Trump sees as a “woke” agenda sprinkled throughout it.
“This action should effectively end the court case and allow the government to focus on enforcing the president’s orders on controlling federal spending,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday. “In the coming weeks and months, more executive action will continue to end the egregious waste of federal funding.”
Liberal groups had brought the lawsuit against the freeze as part of what they viewed as the best example yet of Trump’s overreach.
“While we hope this will enable millions of people in communities across the country to breathe a sigh of relief, we condemn the Trump-Vance administration’s harmful and callous approach of unleashing chaos and harm on the American people,” said Skye Perryman, the chief executive of Democracy Forward, one of the groups that filed the legal action.
The brief saga also created the biggest opening yet for Democrats to try and capitalize on what they saw as a Trump misstep, bringing the opposition party alive in the second week of the administration. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer used the news as a peg to hold his second press conference of the day. “We haven’t won this fight, don’t get me wrong, but see that we can have some real impact,” he said.
Over Trump’s first 10 days in office, the president has issued an all-consuming blitz of executive orders and actions to remake the federal government, which has amounted to an all-out assault on its workforce.
But the OMB memo that landed in agency in-boxes at 5 p.m. Monday was dramatically different – because its sweeping implications were a mystery to Trump allies and critics alike.
Lawyers and federal program managers debated the meaning of paragraphs, sentences and even words in the OMB’s two-page memo.
One sentence referenced federal financial assistance programs making up 30% of federal government spending in the 2024 fiscal year. Some read that as a marker for what the memo would cover, even as multiple officials were flummoxed by the claim of nearly $10 trillion in government outlays.
“Only a couple trillion or so off, I guess?” one official told CNN, referencing the actual number – $6.75 trillion – published by the US government.
Another part of the memo directed federal agencies “to identify and review all federal financial assistance programs and supporting activities consistent with the President’s policies and requirements.”
That was read by many officials as an unequivocal statement that the memo applied to every single federal assistance program, with two exceptions outlined in two footnotes: assistance “provided directly to individuals” and benefits for Medicare and Social Security.
The footnotes made clear the memo intended to capture specific subsections of the code of federal regulations to include financial assistance for grants, loans, loan guarantees, interest subsidies, insurance, direct appropriations, food commodities and cooperative agreements.
“Those were our reference points to the universe of what was affected by the memo,” one senior career agency management official said. “It’s hard not to read that as covering everything except for the specific exemptions.”
The memo directed “each agency” to conduct a “complete and comprehensive analysis of all of their federal financial assistance programs to identify programs, projects and activities that may be implicated by any of the President’s executive orders.”
As the review took place, the memo stated, federal agencies “must temporarily pause all activities” related to the deployment of “all federal financial assistance” and agency activities that may conflict with Trump’s executive orders.
Three words – “must temporarily pause” – were in bold.
In the absence of clarifying or corrective interpretation from the White House, several officials pointed out, the widely shared view was that the freeze was across the board, outside of the exceptions explicitly noted.
The confusion was exacerbated on Tuesday morning when agencies received a spreadsheet labeled “instructions” that included more than 2,500 programs the administration listed as subject to the review.
It would be another seven hours before the White House would provide any kind of clarification – another OMB memo formatted as a “Q&A” that expanded the exempted programs. Most officials and lawmakers assumed the clarifications were the result of the escalating public pressure and represented a narrowing of the intent after the fact.
The White House insisted that wasn’t the case – and attacked the media for reporting accurately the all-consuming confusion across the agency ranks. But the confusion was real, and it wasn’t occurring in a vacuum.
“It’s understandable given the first week that career officials are going to be cautious about doing something that isn’t aligned with the administration’s intent,” one senior GOP congressional aide who had been in constant conversations with agency officials, told CNN. “It’s not like this White House is taking baby steps – and they certainly aren’t wasting time targeting career folks who aren’t running their plays.”
While signing his first bill into law Wednesday, Trump defended the spending freeze, saying it was done “for us to quickly look at the scams, dishonesty, waste, and abuse that’s taken place in our government for too long.”
Trump cited several payments, including the dubious claim of $50 million going to Gaza for condoms, and “more than $40 million that was on its way out the door to the very corrupt World Health Organization.”
The pause was needed, Trump’s top aides argued Tuesday, because money was still being sent out by career officials in the agencies. Dozens of career officials at the US Agency for International Development were placed on leave Monday over claims they were trying to circumvent Trump’s order freezing almost all foreign assistance.
And Miller said in the interview with CNN’s Tapper Tuesday that career HHS employees were still trying to push money out to NGOs in the migrant resettlement space.
The decision was made to clamp down further to ensure alignment with Trump’s policies. It was directed by Trump’s not-yet-confirmed OMB director, Project 2025 co-author Russell Vought, according to Miller and White House officials – raising questions about Vought’s role given that he’s not yet in the job as White House budget chief.
“OMB, led by Russ Vought, felt it was necessary to protect taxpayer resources to issue clearer guidance establishing for these discretionary grants of funding that are not directed by Congress that they go through a political approval process at the agency.” Miller said.
Shortly after the White House rescinded the memo – roughly 44 hours after its initial release – the senior Republican aide texted an unsolicited observation.
It wasn’t Vought – but rather acting OMB Director Matthew Vaeth – who signed the two memos.
The irony, the aide noted, was that Vaeth – a career OMB staff who has been at the budget office for decades – was simply doing his job and carrying out Trump’s directives: “Kinda runs counter to whole reason Trump’s guys are taking a blow torch to federal workers up and down agency organizational charts, doesn’t it?”

The memo, signed by Catherine Bruno, the office’s assistant director, stated that diversity had been considered one of the agency’s “core values,” along with accountability, compassion, fairness, integrity, leadership, respect, and “rigorous obedience to the Constitution.” Now, however, “consistent with recent executive orders”—meaning a ban on DEIA programs the new Trump administration announced in its first week—she wrote that such posters would have to be thrown away.
“It’s like they are lighting the match to watch it burn.”
“In addition to disposing of the posters described above,” the memo added, “please review all materials in your offices, both in hard copy and digital format, and remove any materials that include the core value of diversity.” Bruno wrote that mentions of diversity would also have to be scrubbed from both internal and external websites, and physical materials “should be disposed of appropriately (do not keep them).” Her message, which Mother Jones has viewed, then notes that poster frames could be reused.
The memo struck some employees at the agency as a bit of black comedy, a concrete example of the bizarre situations playing out across the federal government as agencies scramble to comply with Trump’s new executive orders. Federal employees say these early executive actions purporting to root out “inefficiency” and ban diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives are creating concerning, demoralizing, and just plain stupid situations at work.
“This is all just disheartening,” one federal employee told Mother Jones. “It’s so disgusting that our bosses, Congress, hate us.”
People working in the intelligence community have seen immediate changes to their work environment, according to two federal employees. At one intelligence agency, a support group for people with disabilities was disbanded in response to the executive order; a similar group at the same agency for employees who are disabled veterans was also scrapped.
Mother Jones asked spokespeople at the CIA and FBI about how they’re handling the executive guidance around DEIA and whether affinity groups and support systems for disabled employees had been eliminated. “We are complying with the Executive Order and Office of Personnel Management implementing guidance,” the FBI wrote. “The Office of Diversity and Inclusion has been dissolved, along with component DEIA programs.” The CIA acknowledged the request, but did not provide a statement before publication.
The General Services Administration, meanwhile, has hired Thomas Shedd, who previously worked at Tesla, to direct its division of Technology Transformation Services. A GSA employee told Mother Jones that Shedd and two men with unclear roles who appear to be recent college graduates have been conducting “code reviews,” similar to what Elon Musk did when he took over Twitter.
According to the employee, none of the people involved have been identified during these code meetings as being part of the Department of Government Efficiency, the project Musk is leading to supposedly streamline the federal government. But Wired reported Tuesday that people now occupying senior roles at the Office of Personnel Management include a 21-year old former Palantir employee and a person who graduated high school in 2024 who “lists jobs as a camp counselor and a bicycle mechanic among his professional experiences, as well as a summer role at Neuralink,” Musk’s neurotechnology company. The OPM and GSA acknowledged requests for comment but did not provide statements before publication.
Employees at the GSA aren’t clear about what the code reviews are meant to accomplish—only that they suspect they are designed to try to prove that the department’s current way of doing things is inefficient or inferior.
“Applying the Twitter to X model to the federal government by a bunch of tech bros risks crippling not just government activity but the public,” the GSA employee said. “If they are being this flip with our programs, it’s like they are lighting the match to watch it burn and laugh as everything becomes ash.”
“Everything that is coming down is to punish.”
A person familiar with the United States Digital Service, a little known White House organization that has been subsumed by Musk’s DOGE project, said that employees there have all been recently interviewed and specifically asked what they think of DOGE. Rumors of pending layoffs have begun to swirl.
The situation, one federal employee in the intelligence community said, is far worse than at any time in the first Trump administration. “It feels different,” they said. “It feels the like everything that is coming down is to punish. Like this is all about revenge.” It seems, the worker added, “like the admin is out for blood and wants to win some game in their head by making some other side lose. They don’t seem to realize that means we all lose.”
In all, Trump’s anti-DEI and pro-“efficiency” measures seem to have immediately created new layers of bureaucracy and busywork, plunged collective morale into the government-issued toilet, and left many federal employees desperate to leave. Of course that is likely a deliberate feature, not a bug, of the orders. Indeed, on Tuesday, employees at multiple agencies received an unusual email titled “Fork in the Road,” which took inspiration from a similar missive Musk engineered after taking control of Twitter. (A version was also posted on OPM’s website.)
The legally questionable emails suggested that employees should consider resigning or run the real risk of being fired in the near future. As Trump seeks a “more streamlined and flexible workforce,” the email warned, “the majority of federal agencies are likely to be downsized through restructurings, realignments, and reductions in force.”
“During the first week of his administration,” the email began, “President Trump issued a number of directives concerning the federal workforce. Among those directives, the President required that employees return to in-person work, restored accountability for employees who have policy-making authority, restored accountability for senior career executives, and reformed the federal hiring process to focus on merit. As a result of the above orders, the reform of the federal workforce will be significant.” The email even included a draft “separation plan,” referred to as a “deferred resignation letter,” and told employees they had only until February 6 to sign.
“Whichever path you choose,” it concluded, the irony hard to miss, “we thank you for your service to The United States of America.”
In recent weeks, chaos has erupted in various sectors following President Trump’s implementation of anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) measures, as well as his push for so-called “efficiency” initiatives. Employees are questioning the commitment of their leaders to diversity and inclusion, while also worrying about the potential consequences of a more streamlined and less regulated workplace.
As chaos continues to follow Trump’s policies, it is clear that the fight for DEI and workplace fairness is far from over. Organizations must remain vigilant and proactive in protecting these values, even in the face of political opposition.

I believe it was Voltaire who said, “I ask God for but one wish, and it is that my enemies be absurd.” Personally, I also ask for a head coach who’s competent, experienced, universally respected and a proven winner. And I have that. So I’ll turn my attention to the first wish, and be grateful that so many of our enemies are wallowing in absurdity of their own making.

So with that, it’s important that the good people of New England pause, take a good look around at the chaos other fanbases are being subjected to, and thank the Almighty that this year, we’ve been spared. That our beneficent Creator has given us a bountiful harvest of coaches. Beginning with Mike Vrabel of course. But continuing with the staff of special people he has been assembling like a two-eyed Nick Fury. Several of whom have head coaching experience in the league:
Josh McDaniels, Offensive Coordinator. I’ve already written extensively about this hire. And for good reason. You couldn’t genetically engineer a more perfect candidate to mentor, develop and scheme for Drake Maye. A man who has gotten the best years out of a vast array of quarterbacks, from Alpha Tom Brady to Omega Mac Jones, with Betas like Jimmy Garropolo and Jacoby Brissett in between. Who has designed offenses around QBs with skillsets as diverse as Cam Newton’s and Derek Carr’s. Who in his last season in Foxboro had an offense run by a rookie Mac Jones sixth in the league in points. By way of perspective, since he left they’ve finished 17th, 31st and 30th. And to repeat the obvious, no matter how successful he is with Maye, no one’s going to hire him away as their head coach. That ship has sailed and is not returning to port.

Terrell Williams, Defensive Coordinator. More of an unknown factor since this is his first time in the position, Williams has the all the benefit of any doubts due to the fact he was on Vrabel’s staff in Tennessee, was named his Assistant Head Coach, and was handed the playsheet and headset as Head Coach for a preseason game. He’s got the respect of everyone he worked with in Detroit. And seems to have exactly the philosophy this defense needs after dropping from eighth best in the league in 2023 to 22nd last year. A year in which the previous head coach called his team “soft.”
John Streicher, Ernie Adams’ Job, whatever you call it. The only reason I’m disappointed Streicher already comes with a ready made nickname, for obvious reasons:
… is that it’s going to make it harder to awkwardly shoehorn in references to Ted Striker from Airplane! into every Knee Jerk Reactions column. Oh well. Them’s the breaks of the blogging game. But again, here’s another hire Vrabel has vast experience working with. As has one of the best head coaches in football, who didn’t give up his services willingly:
When you can poach your assistants from a playoff team with a Super Bowl champion coach and get him to come to a 4-13 team in a rebuild, that has to be because you’ve got a special relationship with the man. This is again a reminder of the dangers of promoting someone to Head Coach who hasn’t been around the league, and doesn’t have a ton of names in his phone’s Contacts list.
Doug Marrone, Offensive Line (probably). More than any other position on the coaching staff, this one has been the hardest to fill. Dante Scarnecchia has proven to be to the Patriots what David Lee Roth was to Van Halen. They’ve carried on without him, but it’s never been the same. Marrone has, of course, been a Head Coach for almost 100 NFL games with two teams. He’s been the OC for the No. 1 offense in the league twice. And more germane to this discussion, he’s twice had the No. 1 rushing attack, once with Buffalo and again in Jacksonville. At 60 years old and with over 30 years of coaching on his resume, he understands exactly what it takes to put together a top O-line:
Just as importantly, he’s a man who can appreciate fatty, processed, sodium-enriched deli meats:
I can promise you all the days of two, three, and sometimes even four False Start penalties a game are over in Foxboro.
Ashton Grant, Quarterbacks. The hiring of Grant represents another benefit of Vrabel spending last season underemployed, kicking around Cleveland looking to help out in any way possible. So unlike Jerod Mayo having to hired Alex Van Pelt after interviewing a dozen candidates and TC McCartney as QB Coach because Van Pelt recommended him, Vrabel knows this guy because he worked alongside him for a season.
Grant wore different hats in Cleveland, with vaguely defined titles like “Assistant” and “Quality Control” before taking over as QB Coach in a season where the Browns had four different starters, none of them especially good. Unless you count that game at Denver in which Jameis Winston threw for six touchdowns, which I don’t because two of them were scored by Broncos. But still, that’s a decent amount of experience for a young guy working his way up the coaching ladder. And Vrabel trusts him to work well under McDaniels, which should work for all of us.
Thomas Brown, Tight Ends/Passing Game Coordinator. Brown went 1-4 after being given a battlefield promotion in Chicago:
He’s been the Passing Game Coordinator on the 2024 Bears and OC on the 2023 Panthers, two teams which share the distinction of being 32nd in the league in yards. Which is not ideal. But as Tight Ends Coach, he got career highs out of Cole Kmet in passer rating when targeted with 119.2, success rate with 70.9%, and catch rate, with 85.5%. The Bears offense had a million problems, but Brown’s tight end group wasn’t among them. And Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper should benefit.
Jeremy Springer, Special Teams. Oftentimes, the best change is the one you don’t make. Under Springer’s guidance, the Pats special teams went from 20th in the league in Pro Football Focus grade in 2023 to No. 2. He turned Brendan Schooler into a Pro Bowler. And, if nothing else, he gave a masterclass in how to respond when a fanbase’s frustration boils over and they let you know they’re tired of watching one of the worst teams in the league:
I would’ve hated it if Vrabel made a change just for the sake of change. If it ain’t broke, and all that.
All in all, this is a hell of a way to put a staff together. One of the many benefits of Mr. Kraft not dicking around and making the swift yet painful decision to cut ties with Mayo the minute the season ended. Unlike what’s been playing out around the league, we’re already benefiting from it. Prayers are being answered.

With a solid coaching staff in place, the Patriots are poised to continue their winning ways and remain a force to be reckoned with in the NFL.
