  • “Gone Girl” kidnapper Matthew Muller charged in 2009 Mountain View, Palo Alto home invasions

“Gone Girl” kidnapper Matthew Muller charged in 2009 Mountain View, Palo Alto home invasions

The man convicted in the 2015 kidnapping of Denise Huskins in Vallejo, California, is scheduled to appear in Santa Clara County court on Monday to face new charges for a different case.

Matthew Muller is currently serving a 40-year sentence in an Arizona prison for the rape and false imprisonment of Huskins in what police initially thought was a hoax.

Forensic DNA testing has now led to new charges in connection to a series of home invasion sexual assaults in Mountain View and Palo Alto, the Santa Clara County district attorney’s office announced.

What are the new charges against Matthew Muller?

The Santa Clara County district attorney’s office alleges that Muller broke into the homes of women in Mountain View and Palo Alto. Muller is suspected of medicating, and then sexually assaulting both women, prosecutors say.

Both attacks happened within weeks of each other in 2009, from September to October, and had gone unsolved.

Investigators did initially identify Muller as a possible suspect in the Palo Alto case. However, detectives said they didn’t have enough evidence at the time to charge him.

Muller is scheduled to appear in Santa Clara County court at 1 p.m. Monday.

    Real “Gone Girl” case

Muller, a Sacramento-area native, was convicted in 2022 for the 2015 kidnapping and rape of Vallejo resident Denise Huskins.

Police initially believed the disappearance was a hoax and accused Huskins’ boyfriend of perpetrating it, reminding many of the plot of the popular novel and movie “Gone Girl.”

However, Muller was eventually linked to the case and arrested for both Huskins’ kidnapping as well as a home invasion in Dublin.

Huskins’ kidnapping received renewed interest in 2024 after the release of the Netflix documentary “American Nightmare” which detailed the case.

Vallejo police also received renewed criticism for its handling of the case after the release of the documentary. The department had already been sued for its handling of the kidnapping.

In a shocking turn of events, the notorious “Gone Girl” kidnapper Matthew Muller has been charged in connection with a series of home invasions in Mountain View and Palo Alto in 2009.

Muller gained national attention in 2015 when he kidnapped Denise Huskins from her Vallejo home in a case that bore striking similarities to the plot of the popular novel and film “Gone Girl.” He later released Huskins unharmed, but not before subjecting her to a terrifying ordeal.

Now, it appears that Muller may have been involved in criminal activity long before the Huskins kidnapping. Authorities have linked him to a string of home invasions in the Mountain View and Palo Alto areas nearly a decade ago. The details of these crimes are still emerging, but it is clear that Muller’s criminal history is even more extensive than previously thought.

As the investigation into Muller’s past continues, residents of these communities are left to grapple with the unsettling revelation that a dangerous criminal may have been operating in their midst for years. The case serves as a chilling reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.

  • Five charged in connection with singer’s death

Five charged in connection with singer’s death

Five people have been charged in connection with the death of One Direction singer Liam Payne in Argentina, the authorities there say.

The 31-year-old star died on 16 October after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires.

The hotel’s manager, Gilda Martin, and its receptionist, Esteban Grassi, as well as Payne’s friend Roger Nores have been charged with manslaughter, Argentina’s prosecutor’s office says.

Ezequiel Pereyra – who also worked at the hotel – and Braian Paiz, a waiter, have been charged with supplying drugs.

Under Argentina’s legal system, the prosecutor’s office gathers evidence which it then presents to a judge, who has to decide whether to proceed to trial.

According to a statement released by the prosecutor’s office, Judge Laura Bruniard already took the decision to proceed to the next stage on Friday.

The defendants’ lawyers can appeal against that decision. If their appeals are not successful, the trial phase starts.

In court documents, Judge Bruniard listed the charges against the five suspects, who are referred to by their initials, as is the custom in court documents at this stage of the proceedings.

    • Hotel employee EDP is suspected of having sold Liam Payne cocaine on 15 and 16 October
    • Waiter BNP is also suspected of having sold cocaine to Liam Payne twice on 14 October
    • Payne’s friend RLN is suspected of manslaughter for allegedly “failing to fulfil his duties of care, assistance and help” towards the singer after having “abandoned him to his luck knowing that he was incapable of fending for himself and knowing that he [Payne] suffered from multiple addictions”
    • Hotel Manager GAM is suspected of manslaughter for allegedly failing to stop Payne from being taken to his hotel room moments before his death. According to the court papers, given Payne’s state, the room’s balcony posed a “serious threat” and the manager should have ensured Payne was kept in a safe place until medical help arrived
    • Chief receptionist ERG is also suspected of manslaughter for allegedly asking three people to “drag” Payne, who could not stand up, to his room, instead of keeping him safe.

Judge Bruniard said that she did not think that Liam Payne’s friend, the hotel manager and the receptionist “had planned or wanted the death of Payne” but that their actions had created a “risk” to his life.

If found guilty, the three could face sentences of between one and five years in prison.

The sentence for supplying drugs is more severe and ranges between four and 15 years in jail.

Judge Bruniard has ordered the two accused of supplying the drugs be remanded in custody.

They have been summoned to appear within 24 working hours.

Fernando Madeo Facente, the lawyer representing Braian Paiz, told the BBC that he had advised his client not to hand himself in.

He said that Braian Paiz posed no flight risk and had in no way hindered the investigation. To the contrary, he had handed over his mobile phone containing chats with Liam Payne to the authorities willingly.

The lawyer argued that holding Braian Paiz in pre-trial detention would therefore be completely unnecessary and over the top.

He also argued that the prosecution had gone too far when it had accused his client of selling drugs to Payne.

Mr Madeo Facente said that his client and Payne had spent time together “during which they talked and did a lot of things, in private”.

“And one of those things they did was to consume drugs,” the lawyer said.

But he insisted that no money had been exchanged and that allegations to the contrary were “completely false” and lacking in evidence.

He also emphatically rejected articles in the Argentine media which had described his client as “Liam Payne’s dealer”.

In November, the prosecutor’s office said toxicology tests revealed traces of alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s body.

A post-mortem examination determined his cause of death as “multiple trauma” and “internal and external haemorrhage”, as a result of the fall from the hotel balcony.

According to the prosecutor’s office, medical reports also suggested Payne may have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness.

The prosecutor’s office said this ruled out the possibility of a conscious or voluntary act by Payne, and they had concluded the singer did not know what he was doing nor have any comprehension of his actions.

Speaking to US celebrity news outlet TMZ after Payne’s death, Roger Nores said he was a “very good friend” of the singer and they had spent time together on the day the star died.

He said Payne “seemed playful and happy” when he left him about an hour before the musician fell from the balcony.

After Payne’s death, police found substances in his hotel room and objects and furniture that had been damaged.

Hotel staff had made two calls to emergency services saying they had a guest who had taken “too many drugs and alcohol”, and was “trashing the entire room”, it was previously reported.

Payne became one of the most recognisable names in pop after appearing on The X Factor and rising to fame with the boyband One Direction in the 2010s before the band went on an indefinite hiatus in January 2016.

The singer’s funeral was held in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, last month.

His former bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik were among the mourners, alongside Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy and his former partner Cheryl, with whom he shares a son.

  • Matthew Muller charged in South Bay home invasion sexual assaults – NBC Bay Area

Matthew Muller charged in South Bay home invasion sexual assaults – NBC Bay Area

Matthew Muller, the kidnapper at the center of the notorious 2015 Vallejo “Gone Girl” case that later became the focus of a Netflix documentary series, has been charged in two 2009 home invasion sexual assaults in the South Bay, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

The district attorney’s office said advances in forensic DNA testing link Muller to home invasion sexual assaults that occurred in Mountain View and Palo Alto.

Muller previously pleaded guilty to the March 2015 kidnapping of Denise Huskins, a case that was first dismissed as a hoax by law enforcement and later chronicled in the Netflix true crime series “American Nightmare.”

Muller, who is currently serving a 40-year prison term, is scheduled to be arraigned on the new charges Monday afternoon at the Hall of Justice in San Jose. He faces two felony counts of committing a sexual assault during a home invasion, according to the district attorney’s office.

“The details of this person’s violent crime spree seem scripted for Hollywood, but they are tragically real,” Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement. “Our goal is to make sure this defendant is held accountable and will never hurt or terrorize anyone ever again. Our hope is that this nightmare is over.”

According to the district attorney’s office, Muller broke into a Mountain View home on Sept. 29, 2009, attacked a woman in her 30s, tied her up and made her drink a concoction of medications while saying he was going to rape her. The victim persuaded Muller against it, to which he responded by suggesting the woman get a dog. Muller then left the scene.

Less than a month later on Oct. 18, 2009, Muller broke into a Palo Alto home, bound and gagged a woman in her 30s, and made her drink NyQuil. He started to assault her but was persuaded to stop, the district attorney’s office said. He then gave the victim crime prevention advice and left.

Authorities investigated both cases, but they went unsolved.

The district attorney’s office, following a new lead, worked with the Palo Alto and Mountain View police departments to send all of the evidence back to a crime lab for additional testing. Criminalists found Muller’s DNA on straps that he used to bind one of the victims, the district attorney’s office said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

On Wednesday, June 23, Matthew Muller was charged in connection with a series of home invasion sexual assaults that occurred in the South Bay area. According to NBC Bay Area, Muller has been accused of breaking into multiple homes and assaulting residents in their own residences.

The charges against Muller include burglary, sexual assault, and other related offenses. The victims of these heinous crimes have been left traumatized and in fear for their safety.

Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information about these incidents or who may have been a victim of a similar crime to come forward and speak to authorities.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of staying vigilant and taking steps to protect oneself and one’s home from potential intruders. Our thoughts are with the victims of these horrific acts, and we hope that justice will be served swiftly.

‘Gone Girl’ Kidnapper Charged Over Earlier Home Invasions: Prosecutors

    • Matthew Muller, who is behind bars over the infamous “Gone Girl kidnapping” case, is now facing charges for a series of home invasions from years earlier, prosecutors have confirmed
    • The charges relate to cases in California dating back to 2009, a release from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office stated
    • “The details of this person’s violent crime spree seem scripted for Hollywood, but they are tragically real,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said of the update, per the release

The man who pleaded guilty to the infamous 2015 “Gone Girl kidnapping” case is now facing charges over a series of other Calif. home invasions, authorities have said.

On Monday, Dec. 30, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Matthew Muller, 47 — who was the subject of the 2024 Netflix docuseries American Nightmare, which chronicled the kidnapping of Denise Huskins from Vallejo — had been charged over “a series of home invasion sexual assaults in Mountain View and Palo Alto 15 years ago,” per a release.

Prosecutors said “notorious kidnapping convict” Muller had been charged after authorities were able to use “advances in forensic DNA testing” following a new lead regarding the 2009 crimes, the release added.

“The District Attorney’s Office coordinated with the Palo Alto and Mountain View police departments to send all evidence back to the DA Crime lab for further testing,” authorities said in the post.

“District Attorney Criminalists found Muller’s DNA on straps he used to bind one of the victims. The police agencies and the District Attorney’s Office then conducted [a] follow-up investigation that resulted in the current charges,” it added.

Muller — a former Marine and a Harvard-educated lawyer who was later disbarred — is now facing “two felony counts of committing a sexual assault.” He faces life in prison if convicted, per the release.

The DA’s Office alleged Muller — who PEOPLE reported had been sentenced to 40 years in prison in 2017 for the 2015 abduction of Huskins — “broke into a woman’s Mountain View home, attacked her, tied her up, made her drink a concoction of medications, and said he was going to rape her” in the early hours of Sept. 29, 2009, per the release.

“After the victim, in her 30s, persuaded him against it, he suggested the victim get a dog, then fled,” the post alleged.

Muller is also accused of breaking into a Palo Alto home on Oct. 18, 2009, where he allegedly “bound and gagged a woman in her 30s and made her drink Nyquil.”

“He then began to assault her, before being persuaded to stop. Muller gave the victim crime prevention advice, then fled,” prosecutors alleged in the release.

“The details of this person’s violent crime spree seem scripted for Hollywood, but they are tragically real,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said, per the post.

“Our goal is to make sure this defendant is held accountable and will never hurt or terrorize anyone ever again. Our hope is that this nightmare is over,” Rosen added.

The DA’s Office recalled how Muller “gained national infamy” six years after the Huskins kidnapping case, which has been compared to the plot of the 2014 movie Gone Girl, starring Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck. The film followed the release of the 2012 book about a deceitful disappearance by Gillian Flynn.

“On March 23, 2015, Muller broke into a Vallejo home, where he drugged, and tied up a young couple. He kidnapped Ms. Huskins, brought her to a cabin in South Lake Tahoe, and sexually assaulted her. Two days later, Muller drove his victim to Southern California and released her,” the DA’s Office recalled of the kidnapping in the Dec. 30 release.

Police initially thought the invasion and kidnapping was a hoax perpetrated by Huskins’ boyfriend, Aaron Quinn. However, authorities eventually apologized and Muller was arrested in June 2015.

Following Muller’s sentencing, Quinn said he “strategically destroyed our lives,” the San Francisco Chronicle previously reported.

“I cannot and will not ever be the same,” he said at the time, per the outlet. “My family will not ever be the same.”

“Muller, who pleaded guilty in 2016 to the kidnapping and in 2022 to the sexual assaults of Ms. Huskins, is currently incarcerated in federal prison in Tucson, Arizona,” the DA’s Office said in the Dec. 30 release.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office didn’t immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for additional information.

In a shocking turn of events, the alleged kidnapper in the infamous “Gone Girl” case has been charged with multiple counts of home invasion by prosecutors. The suspect, who gained notoriety for his role in the high-profile disappearance of a young woman, is now facing additional charges for his involvement in a series of burglaries in the same area.

Authorities believe that the suspect may have targeted multiple homes in the neighborhood before ultimately kidnapping the victim in the “Gone Girl” case. The charges against him paint a disturbing picture of a man who was willing to use violence and intimidation to achieve his goals.

As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge about the suspect’s criminal past and his possible connections to other unsolved crimes. The community is reeling from the news, as they grapple with the realization that a dangerous criminal was living among them.

The “Gone Girl” case has captivated the nation with its twists and turns, but this latest development sheds new light on the dark and sinister nature of the suspect. ‘Gone Girl’ kidnapper charged in home invasions from years earlier

The man who pleaded guilty to kidnapping and sexually assaulting a Northern California woman in a case that became known nationwide as the “Gone Girl” kidnapping has now been charged with other break-ins and assaults from years earlier, prosecutors announced Monday.

Matthew Muller — who pleaded guilty in the 2015 kidnapping and sexual assault of Denise Huskins — was charged in connection with two other home invasions from 2009, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office said.

In the first attack, on Sept. 29, 2009, Muller allegedly broke into a woman’s home in Mountain View, tied her up, forced her drink a mix of medications and told her he was going to rape her, prosecutors said. The woman “persuaded him against it,” and Muller then allegedly suggested she get a dog and fled the scene, prosecutors said.

Weeks later, on Oct. 18, 2009, Muller allegedly broke into a home in Palo Alto, bound and gagged a woman and forced her to drink NyQuil, prosecutors said. “He then began to assault her, before being persuaded to stop,” prosecutors said. “Muller gave the victim crime prevention advice, then fled.”

While “following a new lead,” investigators sent all the evidence from both scenes for further testing, and thanks to “advances in forensic DNA testing,” Muller’s DNA was recovered from straps used to bind one of the victims, prosecutors said Monday.

Muller — who had been serving a 40-year sentence at a federal prison in Arizona relating to charges from 2015 — appeared in court for his arraignment in San Jose, California, on Monday.

He was arraigned on two counts of first-degree burglary with intention to commit rape, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a subsequent press briefing. Both counts carry the potential for life terms of Muller is convicted, he added.

“If, God forbid, a serious and terrible crime is committed, like these two cases — to a man breaking into a woman’s home, tying them up to try to rape them — we want to solve that crime as quickly as we can. We were not able to do that in this case,” Rosen said, commenting on the 15 years that it took law enforcement to identify Muller as a suspect in the 2009 crimes. “Were these two investigations handled perfectly? No, they weren’t handled perfectly. However, we have been able to solve those cases and to get justice in this case.”

Rosen also announced that Muller’s plea hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Jan. 17.

“If the defendant does plead guilty to these crimes. I’m grateful for that,” the district attorney said. “I’m grateful that the victims don’t have to go through more even more pain and trauma.”

On March 23, 2015, Muller broke into a home in Vallejo, where he drugged and tied up Huskins and her boyfriend, Aaron Quinn, prosecutors said.

He kidnapped Huskins and took her to a cabin in South Lake Tahoe, where he sexually assaulted her, prosecutors said.

Quinn went to the police, who started to consider him a suspect.

After two days held captive, Muller drove Huskins to Southern California and released her.

Once Huskins was freed, the couple was then accused of a hoax, and the case set off a media firestorm fueled by suggestions that the case mirrored the book and movie “Gone Girl.”

In a shocking turn of events, the infamous “Gone Girl” kidnapper has been charged in a series of home invasions from years earlier. The kidnapper, who gained notoriety for staging her own abduction in a twisted bid for attention, has now been linked to a string of burglaries and break-ins that had long gone unsolved.

Authorities believe that the kidnapper may have been responsible for as many as ten home invasions before her high-profile disappearance. In each case, valuables were stolen and the homes were ransacked, leaving the victims traumatized and fearful for their safety.

The arrest of the “Gone Girl” kidnapper has brought a sense of closure to the victims of these earlier crimes, many of whom had given up hope of ever seeing justice served. It also raises new questions about the kidnapper’s motives and the extent of her criminal activities.

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to piece together the full scope of the kidnapper’s crimes and bring her to justice for her reign of terror. The “Gone Girl” may have disappeared once, but her dark legacy lives on in the hearts of those she victimized.

WARREN, Mich. – A Flint man has been charged in in a shooting that left one person dead and injured two others on Christmas Eve in Oxford.

The shooting happened before 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 24, 2024, on Ray Road between Lapeer and N. Oxford roads.

Police said Malik Letroy Webb, 29, shot and killed a woman who stopped to help him after he drove his car into a ditch. She has been identified as Barbara Wolf, 71, of Oxford Township.

He is also accused of shooting and injuring Wolf’s daughter, who was in the car with her, and a 56-year-old Oxford man who stopped to help too.

Witnesses told investigators that Wolf pulled behind Webb’s vehicle and had stopped to help him when she was shot and killed and her daughter was shot and injured. The 56-year-old man was shot in the arm.

Wolf was pronounced dead at a hospital. The other two victims were treated at a hospital where one is in serious condition with multiple significant injuries and the other has been released, according to police.

A 39-year-old Oxford Township woman had been at the Park and Ride when Webb placed a gun to her head in a failed attempt to drive away in her vehicle, according to police.

  • Suspect charged with bias-related crime for allegedly attacking Grand Junction TV employee

Suspect charged with bias-related crime for allegedly attacking Grand Junction TV employee

    Updated on Dec. 19, 2024 at 12:19 p.m.

A 39-year-old man is in Mesa County Jail for attacking an employee of a Grand Junction television station after first confronting him about his nationality.

Patrick Egan faces charges of bias-related crimes, second degree assault and harassment, according to a press release from the Grand Junction Police Department. In a news story published Wednesday night, Grand Junction’s KKCO reports the attack occurred outside their station and that the victim was a KKCO news employee.

The employee suffered minor injuries, according to an arrest affidavit.

According to police, the victim was driving from Delta to Grand Junction when Egan began following him.

At a stoplight on Highway 6 and 50 near 25 Road, Egan rolled down his window and shouted at the victim, allegedly saying, “Are you even a U.S. Citizen? This is Trump’s America now! I’m a Marine and I took an oath to protect this country from people like you!” according to the arrest affidavit from the incident.

The victim then called the manager of the station who instructed him to drive back to the TV station. When he arrived, Egan again confronted him, asking for the victim’s ID. When the victim  ran toward the door, he was tackled by Egan, according to the affidavit. Egan then began to choke the man before other KKCO employees intervened and held Egan until police arrived.

The KKCO employee was evaluated on site when officers arrived and Egan was arrested and taken to the Mesa County Jail. KKCO reports Egan was working for a local taxi company at the time of the attack.

KKCO leadership said they were unable to comment at this time. Egan is set to appear in court Thursday afternoon.

This is a developing story and may be updated.

In a recent disturbing incident, a suspect has been charged with a bias-related crime for allegedly attacking a Grand Junction TV employee. This heinous act of violence is not only shocking but also a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of hate crimes in our society.

The victim, a dedicated employee of the TV station, was reportedly targeted because of their race, religion, or other personal characteristics. This kind of targeted violence has no place in our community and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

It is important for us to stand in solidarity with the victim and their family during this difficult time. We must also demand justice for this hateful attack and hold the perpetrator accountable for their actions.
