Curran: Pats looked ‘unprofessional’ in embarrassing loss to Chargers

Curran: Pats looked ‘unprofessional’ in embarrassing loss to Chargers originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Another week, another new low for the New England Patriots.

The Patriots hardly showed signs of life in front of their home crowd in Saturday’s 40-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. L.A. scored on seven consecutive possessions and dominated the time-of-possession battle, 40:34 to 19:26.

Pats fans at Gillette Stadium reacted to the team’s latest embarrassing defeat with loud boos and “Fire Mayo” chants. NBC Sports Boston’s Patriots insider Tom E. Curran didn’t mince words either about Saturday’s effort.

“Unprofessional performance by the New England Patriots,” Curran said on Patriots Postgame Live. “It did not look like a professional football team in a 32-team league that is the NFL. When I look at this result, and I see it in the wake of last week’s noble loss to the Buffalo Bills, it undoes that. …

“I feel as if now things have definitely been called into question because you had to be a better team at this juncture of the season than you were in 2023. Regardless of the merits and logic behind moving on from Bill Belichick, you had to be building as the season went along, laying a foundation. Whatever foundation this season was laid upon has now crumbled to the point where you have to question everything going forward. And, ‘Would changes be for the better, or just for the sake of making them?’ has to be decided in the next, I would say 10 days.”

Earlier in the day, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport stated that Jerod Mayo’s job as Patriots head coach is considered “safe” heading into 2025. Former Pats linebacker Ted Johnson wonders whether Saturday’s blowout loss could change things.

“It is gonna be interesting what people are talking about this week, because people said Jerod Mayo’s job is not in jeopardy unless something really catastrophic happens. I don’t know if this qualifies for it, but this is a bad, bad loss for the Patriots today,” Johnson said.

“They haven’t been able to put back-to-back games together all season long. That is a reason to be alarmed about the coaching staff and these guys. That (Chargers) roster is better than yours, but they had to come across the country in this kind of weather. To me, this was an unacceptable performance by the Patriots today.”

For what it’s worth, prized rookie quarterback Drake Maye was among multiple Patriots players to come to the coaching staff’s defense last week. It’ll ultimately be up to longtime team owner Robert Kraft and president Jonathan Kraft to decide how to address the question marks on the coaching staff and in the front office for 2025.

New England (3-13) will wrap up its rough 2024 campaign next Sunday vs. the Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium.

The New England Patriots suffered a humiliating 27-0 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, and NBC Sports Boston’s Tom Curran didn’t hold back in his assessment of the team’s performance. In a post titled “Curran: Pats looked ‘unprofessional’ in embarrassing loss to Chargers,” Curran criticized the Patriots for their lackluster effort and execution on both sides of the ball.

Curran pointed out the numerous mistakes made by the Patriots, including dropped passes, missed tackles, and blown assignments. He described the team’s performance as “unprofessional” and questioned their level of focus and preparation heading into the game.

The loss dropped the Patriots to 2-5 on the season, marking their worst start in decades. Curran’s scathing assessment of their performance serves as a wake-up call for the team as they look to turn things around and salvage their season.

  • Jim Harbaugh and Chargers focused on accomplishing more after wrapping up playoff berth

Jim Harbaugh and Chargers focused on accomplishing more after wrapping up playoff berth

    Associated Press

Jim Harbaugh, Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers celebrated in the locker room Saturday after they wrapped up a playoff spot with a 40-7 victory over the New England Patriots.

But even as they realized one goal by making the postseason, Harbaugh tried to keep things focused on the road ahead by stressing: “There’s more to do.”

The Chargers (10-6) go into the regular-season finale at Las Vegas knowing they will be at least the AFC’s sixth seed and avoid a trip to Buffalo for the wild-card round.

Los Angeles currently is in line to face Baltimore in a Harbaugh Bowl rematch, but it has an outside shot at the fifth seed and a trip to Houston if Cincinnati beats Pittsburgh next weekend.

While Harbaugh credited his players for the turnaround from five wins last year to double-digit victories this season, Herbert gave most of it to Harbaugh and first-year general manager Joe Hortiz.

“They have done such a great job of getting the right guys here. You look in the locker room and everybody plays for each other,” Herbert said. “(Harbaugh’s) a competitor, and he wants to win no matter what it is. It definitely shows, and it’s the way everyone fights for him, wants to play for him, and respects him.”

Harbaugh is the fifth coach in NFL history to win at least 10 games in his first season with two teams. He is also the eighth to make the playoffs in his first season with two teams.

“Very little to do with me. If it goes right, then it’s our players. They’re doing a great job. It’s gone bad a couple times. That’s on me,” he said. “I’ve been drinking the Kool-Aid here from day one, I can’t give enough credit to Derwin James, Justin Herbert, and those two in particular. And Khalil Mack and Rashawn Slater. I mean, stalwarts. Brad Bozeman has come in. He’s been a stalwart. There’s a bunch. There’s probably, like — I counted it up early. There was maybe 15, 15 stalwarts that we had, and it’s grown since then.”

Even though the Chargers are 3-5 against teams with winning records at the time they’ve played them, they are 7-1 against teams that were at or under .500. Four of those wins against opponents with losing records have come by at least 17 points, the first time since 2017 the Bolts have won that many games by as big a margin.

Since halftime of their Dec. 19 game against Denver, the Chargers have outscored the Broncos and Patriots 61-13 over six quarters.

“That’s the type of football we want to be playing in December, January, and hopefully on. That’s the type of football you want to be playing, especially in these big games like that. It was really good to see,” Herbert said.

    What’s working

Offensive coordinator Greg Roman has said throughout the season it’s tough to use the full playbook when the Chargers have short drives. They came into Saturday’s game ranked 26th with only 23 possessions of at least 10 plays, but they had four against the Patriots, leading to three touchdowns and a field goal. It was the first time since Week 10 last season against Detroit they have had at least four drives of double-digit plays.

    What needs help

Kickoff return coverage. The Chargers have allowed nine kick returns of at least 30 yards, eighth most in the league. New England’s Alex Erickson had three returns for 90 yards, including 34 and 31 yards.

    Stock up

RB J.K. Dobbins was activated off injured reserve and provided a boost to the offense with 76 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Dobbins, who missed four games due to a knee injury, has set career highs in scrimmage yards (983) and rushing yards (842) in his first season with the Chargers.

    Stock down

WR D.J. Chark was targeted four times but didn’t have a catch. Chark was signed during the offseason to provide experience and speed to a young receiver group. However, he missed the first half of the season with a hip injury and has played sparingly since his return. He has three receptions on the season.

    Injuries

Three starters — RB Gus Edwards (ankle), LB Denzel Perryman (groin) and OG Trey Pipkins (hip) — were inactive. WR Joshua Palmer (heel) and DB Elijah Molden (shin) were injured in the second half.

    Key numbers

77 and 1,054 — Receptions and receiving yards by Ladd McConkey, both records for a Chargers rookie.

5 — Consecutive seasons by Herbert with at least 3,000 passing yards and 20 touchdown passes, tied with Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson for the most to start a career.

2 — Sacks by Derwin James Jr. against the Patriots, the first time in the safety’s seven-year career he has had multiple sacks in a game.

    What’s next

The Chargers go for their first season sweep of the Raiders since 2018 in the regular-season finale.

  • Chargers celebrate playoff berth, turnaround under Harbaugh

Chargers celebrate playoff berth, turnaround under Harbaugh

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — In Week 14 last season, the Los Angeles Chargers were surrounded by fans in their home stadium chanting for the firing of then-coach Brandon Staley amid a disappointing season.

A little over a year later, the Chargers saw what that felt like from the other side.

As Los Angeles steamrolled New England 40-7 on Saturday to clinch a playoff spot, the small contingent of Patriots fans left at Gillette Stadium began to chant “Fire Mayo,” referring to Patriots coach Jerod Mayo. It was just the second time New England had lost by 30 or more points at home this century.

Saturday’s win was the Chargers’ best performance of the season and perhaps the clearest example of just how much this team has changed in a year under coach Jim Harbaugh.

“It feels good to be playing meaningful football,” safety Derwin James said. “I remember being on my couch last year just wishing and wondering, ‘Man, like, what I need to do differently to be able to make sure I don’t get the same feeling this year, man?’ And I’m just happy, proud of the guys that put forth the effort to help us get here.”

James had one of his best games, sacking Patriots quarterback Drake Maye twice to bring his season total to a career-best 5.5. The defense shut down a New England offense that had scored 21 points on one of the NFL’s best teams last weekend in the Buffalo Bills. The Patriots’ only touchdown Saturday came in the second quarter when Maye connected with wide receiver DeMario Douglas for a 36-yard score.

The Chargers’ defense pressured Maye throughout the day, sacking him four times and pressuring him on 11 of his 31 dropbacks (35%).

“Our team played one of our best games defensively,” Harbaugh said.

The Chargers were almost perfect on offense, punting just twice and scoring a season high in points. Justin Herbert finished 26-for-38 with 281 passing yards and three touchdowns before being pulled along with all the starters early in the fourth quarter. Herbert also passed Peyton Manning for the most passing yards in a player’s first five seasons in the NFL.

Herbert’s favorite target Saturday was rookie Ladd McConkey, who caught eight passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns. McConkey’s big day helped him break the Chargers’ single-season rookie receptions and receiving yards records held by Keenan Allen.

It was one of the best games of McConkey’s first year, coming against the team the Chargers traded up with to select him in the draft with the 34th pick. McConkey had more receiving yards Saturday than the two receivers the Patriots selected with the picks they got in the draft-day deal, Ja’Lynn Polk (87 yards) and Javon Baker (0).

“No extra motivation, nothing like that,” McConkey said. “When I got drafted, I was excited to get drafted. … I’m right where I’m supposed to be. So it’s a cool moment.”

Last season, the Chargers didn’t look like a team a year away from playoff contention, winning just five games and losing many of their best players. However, the team expected a significant turnaround once it hired Harbaugh, who was many of the players’ first choice for the job.

“It was guys praying and hoping for Jim to be our head coach,” linebacker Daiyan Henley said of players’ mindsets during the coaching search. “We saw Jim as a winner. Even though he was in college, he was a winner in college. We also knew his history with the 49ers. He’s a winner everywhere he’s been, and we just wanted that mentality and here he is. And exactly what we thought he was is exactly who he is.”

Aside from a loud embrace between Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz, the celebrations were somewhat muted in the locker room. Multiple Chargers said they were looking forward to getting the team’s 11th win next week and making a deep playoff push.

“I’ve got to have a chance to win a Super Bowl, and that’s what we’re going to do now,” running back J.K. Dobbins said.

“We don’t care what seed we is. We don’t care where we got to go,” James said. “We know we want to finish all our games. Eleven wins sounds better than 10 wins. And it don’t matter what seed we is. We know for our ultimate goal we gotta go through everybody, so, man, we ready.”

Saturday’s victory came at a cost for the Chargers, who lost wide receiver Joshua Palmer and safety Elijah Molden to injury.

Palmer injured his heel and was in a walking boot after the game. Molden suffered a broken leg when he collided with James late in the contest and will miss the remainder of the season, a source told ESPN, confirming news first reported by Fox Sports.

Molden, who was carted off the field, took to Instagram to announce his season was over but didn’t detail the injury.

“Grateful God placed me here in LA with this team!” Molden said in his post. “Most fun I’ve ever had playing the game since I was a little kid. Lot more plays to be made in the future but best believe that! 22 out Bolts headed to the playoffs.”

The Chargers will play the Las Vegas Raiders to finish their regular season next week. With a win over the Raiders and a Steelers loss, the Chargers can move up to the No. 5 seed in the AFC.

The Los Angeles Chargers have officially clinched a spot in the playoffs, marking a remarkable turnaround under head coach John Harbaugh.

After a rocky start to the season, the Chargers have surged in the second half, winning key games and securing a playoff berth in the highly competitive AFC West. Harbaugh’s leadership and strategic coaching have been instrumental in guiding the team to this point, instilling a winning mentality and fostering a strong team culture.

The Chargers’ success this season is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players, coaches, and staff who have all contributed to the team’s impressive turnaround. Fans are excited to see what this talented team can achieve in the playoffs and are hopeful that they can make a deep run in the postseason.

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Chargers on their playoff berth and their incredible season under the guidance of John Harbaugh. The future looks bright for this team, and fans can’t wait to see what they can accomplish in the playoffs. #BoltUp #PlayoffsBound #HarbaughEffect

  • 3 no-brainer offseason trades the Chargers should make

3 no-brainer offseason trades the Chargers should make

The LA Chargers have overachieved in 2024 as this season was meant to be a soft rebuild under head coach Jim Harbaugh. Instead, the Chargers are a playoff team that no division winner wants to see in the first round.

Los Angeles is even more dangerous in the future. The Chargers have more assets to play with in the 2025 offseason, allowing the front office to build on the remarkable job Harbaugh and his coaching staff has done this season.

Some of these resources may manifest in trades for the Chargers. General manager Joe Hortiz has already shown he is not afraid to trade for talent and there are some interesting names who may be available in the spring for the Bolts to consider.

Chargers should trade for Joel Bitonio

Joel Bitonio has emerged as a potential trade chip this offseason due to his contract and the current status of the Cleveland Browns. Bitonio has one more year under contract in Cleveland and in good faith, the team may trade him somewhere he can contend next season before he eventually calls is a career.

Cleveland is well over the projected salary cap for next season to it makes sense to shed salary wherever possible. Trading Bitonio with a post-June 1 designation would save the Browns $8.37 million in cap space next season but it does complicate a deal as it would then have to happen after the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Browns may prefer to get draft capital in 2025 but if this is a good-faith deal to save some money and accrue future draft capital then it certainly could happen over the summer. Bitonio may no longer be in his prime, but he would be a cost-effective way to add an experienced veteran to a bad interior offensive line room when there are not many other options available.

Chargers should trade for Garrett Wilson

Dysfunction in New York has opened the door for the Jets to trade Garrett Wilson this offseason and the Chargers should be one of the team’s on speed dial if so. Wilson so clearly has franchise wide receiver potential and would be a much-needed addition to the Chargers’ receiving corps.

Wilson is playing under the last year of his rookie deal in 2025 so he would not have a huge impact on the Chargers’ cap. With the second-least amount of salary on the books in the league for 2026, the Chargers would easily be able to extend Wilson after the 2025 season.

If the Jets were smart they would keep Wilson and squash and trade rumors. But NFL teams aren’t always smart (especially the Jets) and if this relationship becomes damaged beyond repair then it makes sense for New York to sell high on Wilson.

It does not matter if it costs a first-round pick. It would be worth it for the Chargers.

Chargers should trade for Marlon Humphrey

Marlon Humphrey is a big name and he may not seem like someone who could actually be traded this offseason. However, the Baltimore Ravens’ cap situation, and Humphrey approaching 30, might prompt the team to sell high on the big-name cornerback.

The Ravens only have $17 million in projected cap space next season with 42 players on the roster. That is enough for Baltimore to get by but with an incoming draft class and the need to fill out a roster it is cutting it close. Humphrey has the second-largest cap hit on the team and the Ravens would save $12.4 million by trading him.

Additionally, only seven teams in the league have less projected cap space in 2026 than the Ravens. Baltimore has big-name players who are free agents that offseason (headlined by Kyle Hamilton and Mark Andrews) and may need to pre-emptively create space for those players. Humphrey would carry a $22.9 million cap hit in 2026 if he stayed in Baltimore.

While Humphrey’s best days might be behind him, he has played well this season and is a natural fit in Jesse Minter’s defense. Minter coached Humphrey in Baltimore so he would slide in nicely as a veteran who understands the defense and can play alongside young corners in Cam Hart and Tarheeb Still.

Humphrey is also a natural fit in the slot for the Chargers. Humphrey has played 242 snaps in the slot this season and has the lowest passer rating allowed of any player with at least 100 coverage snaps in the slot.

    1. Trade for a veteran cornerback: The Chargers should look to bolster their secondary by trading for a veteran cornerback with proven experience. This would provide stability and leadership to a young and talented defensive backfield.
    2. Trade for a proven pass rusher: The Chargers struggled to generate consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks last season, so trading for a proven pass rusher should be a top priority. Adding a dynamic edge rusher would help take their defense to the next level.
    3. Trade for a reliable offensive lineman: The Chargers need to protect their young quarterback, Justin Herbert, better in order to maximize their offensive potential. Trading for a reliable offensive lineman would help solidify the line and give Herbert more time to make plays downfield.

By making these three no-brainer offseason trades, the Chargers can address key areas of need and position themselves for success in the upcoming season.

NFL scores, live updates: Bengals defeat Broncos to stay alive for AFC’s final playoff spot, Chargers clinch playoffs with win over Patriots

The Los Angeles Chargers clinched a playoff spot on Saturday with a dominant 40-7 win over the New England Patriots in a rainy Foxboro. Six of the seven AFC playoff spots are now secure with the final place in the postseason up for grabs.

The Denver Broncos had an opportunity to clinch that final spot, but lost 30–24 to the Cincinnati Bengals in overtime. Cincinnati has won four consecutive games and is thus still alive for that last playoff bid in the AFC at 8–8. Joe Burrow leads the NFL in passing yards and took the league lead in touchdown passes with his two scoring throws. Denver drops to 9–7 and has lost two in a row.

In the NFC, the Rams can win the NFC West with a win over the Arizona Cardinals Saturday night, thanks to clinching a strength-of-victory tie-breaker over Seattle. The Cardinals were eliminated from playoff contention last week with a loss to the Panthers. The Rams are closing well, having won their last four games, but they’ve scored just 31 total points in wins over the 49ers and Jets over the past two weeks.

    Live99 updates

    • TOUCHDOWN: Rams 10, Cardinals 6

On 3rd-and-goal from the 2, Kyler Murray misses Trey McBride in the end zone. But the Rams’ Michael Hoecht is called for defensive holding.

Two plays later, Murray connects with McBride for a one-yard touchdown.

However, Chad Ryland’s extra-point kick is blocked so the Cardinals only get six points.

    • Arizona driving toward a score

Arizona drives into the red zone on a seven-yard catch by Trey McBride, six-yard run by Michael Carter and a nine-yard pass to Michael Wilson.

Then Kyler Murray rips off a 12-yard run to give the Cardinals a 1st-and-goal at the 7-yard line.

    • Cardinals begin 2nd half on offense

Cardinals begin the second half on offense and start their drive off promisingly with an eight-yard rush by Michael Carter, 14-yard pass to Trey McBride and a 5-yard grab from Carter.

    • Halftime: Rams 10, Cardinals 0

      Cardinals

      Total offense: 140 yards
      Kyler Murray: 13/19, 124 yards/ 3 rushes, 20 yards

Puka Nacua: 6 catches, 88 yards

    • Field goal: Rams 10, Cardinals 0

Matthew Stafford hits Puka Nacua for one more seven-yard gain. But he throws incompletions on the next two plays and the Rams have to settle for a field goal with 35 seconds left in the first half.

Joshua Karty nails a 53-yard kick to give L.A. a 10–0 lead with 27 seconds before halftime.

    • Stafford and Nacua moving the ball

Matthew Stafford has connected on two consecutive passes to Puka Nacua for a combined 35 yards. That moves the Rams to the Arizona 42-yard line with 48 seconds remaining in the first half.

    • Rams get ball back with 1:41 left in 1st half

After two incompletions by Kyler Murray, the Cardinals have to punt and the Rams have a chance to add to their lead with 1:41 remaining in the first half. They’ll start from their 23-yard line

    • 2-minute warning

The Cardinals are at midfield at the two-minute warning after a 15-yard reception by Elijah Higgins and four-yard rush by Michael Carter.

    • TOUCHDOWN: Rams 7, Cardinals 0

The Rams break up the scoreless tie on a one-yard touchdown run by Kyren Williams on 3rd-and-goal.

That finished off a nine-play, 50-yard drive for the Rams.

    • Matthew Stafford runs for 12 yards

Of the two quarterbacks in this game, Kyler Murray would be expected to run for a 12-yard gain.

      Matthew Stafford showed otherwise.

The Rams have a 1st-and-goal at the Arizona 4-yard line.

    • Stafford to Kupp for 29 yards

Matthew Stafford found Cooper Kupp for a 29-yard gain on 1st-and-10 from the L.A. 40.

Following two incompletions, Stafford then connected with Puka Nacua for 15 yards.

    • Cardinals punt after Kyler Murray sacked

Kyler Murray hit a five-yard pass after the ineligible man downfield penalty put Arizona at 2nd-and-15. Murray was then sacked by Byron Young on third down for a six-yard loss.

Michael Palardy punts 39 yards for the Cardinals and the Rams take over at their 40-yard line.

    • Trey McBride 34-yard catch wiped out by penalty

Kyler Murray danced in the pocket to buy himself more time to throw against the Rams’ pass rush and it paid off with a 34-yard pass to Trey McBride.

UNFORTUNATELY, the play was wiped out by an ineligible man downfield penalty on Isaiah Adams.

    • 4 possessions, 4 punts for the Rams

The Rams go 3-and-out after a false start penalty on Hunter Long put them in a 1st-and-15 hole.

Matthew Stafford did connect with Puka Nacua for a 15-yard gain on 3rd-and-16, but the Rams had to punt from their 24-yard line.

    • Cardinals stopped on 4th down

Following a four-yard pass to Greg Dortch on 3rd-and-5 to the Rams’ 14-yard line, the Cardinals decide to go for it on fourth down.

However, James Conner is stopped for no gain and L.A. takes over.

    • First quarter: Cardinals 0, Rams 0

The Cardinals end the first quarter with a 34-yard pass from Kyler Murray to Trey McBride, followed by a seven-yard rush by Michael Carter.

Arizona and L.A. are tied 0–0.

    • Sean McVay politely drops a challenge flag

    • Kyler Murray stumbles into sack

A sack by Braden Fiske and 17-yard loss from Kyler Murray trying in vain to make a play effectively ended the Cardinals drive.

On 4th-and-30, Michael Palardy punts 47 yards and the Rams will take over at their 33-yard line.

    • Murray and MHJ making it work

There’s been some talk this week about Marvin Harrison Jr. having a disappointing rookie season and his need to still form a connection with Kyler Murray.

But Harrison looked great on this 24-yard snag along the left sideline.

    • Rams punt again

Two possessions, two punts for the Rams thus far.

L.A. did get a first down on its second drive, but Matthew Stafford then threw three consecutive incompletions.

An Ethan Evans 57-yard punt pushes the Cardinals back to their 5-yard line.

In a thrilling Sunday showdown, the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Denver Broncos to keep their playoff hopes alive for the AFC’s final spot. The Bengals put on a dominant performance, with quarterback Joe Burrow leading the charge with several touchdown passes.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers secured their spot in the playoffs with a crucial win over the New England Patriots. The Chargers showed resilience and determination throughout the game, ultimately coming out on top to punch their ticket to the postseason.

  • 2024 NFL playoff picture: How Bengals, Dolphins and Colts can still make postseason after Chargers’ victory

2024 NFL playoff picture: How Bengals, Dolphins and Colts can still make postseason after Chargers’ victory

There is officially only one spot left to be clinched in the AFC playoffs. Going into Week 17, there were two spots up for grabs, but the Los Angeles Chargers grabbed one of those with their 40-7 win over the New England Patriots on Saturday.

With the Chargers now in, that means there are now four teams vying for the AFC’s final playoff spot: The Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals.

The Broncos had a chance to clinch the final spot on Saturday, but they came up empty in a wild loss to the Bengals. Joe Burrow threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Tee Higgins to clinch a 30-24 win in overtime.

Despite the loss, the Broncos are still in the driver’s seat for the final spot: To clinch the final playoff berth in the AFC all they have to do is win in Week 18 against a Kansas City team that will likely be benching its starters (The Chiefs already clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC, so they have nothing to play for.)

As for the other three teams, they’re all long shots right now, but one of them could get in if a few things go their way over the final two weeks.

Let’s check out what needs to happen for each team to get in.

What Bengals need to get to the playoffs:

    • Bengals win in Week 18 (at Steelers)
    • Broncos lose in Week 18 (vs. Chiefs)
    • Colts lose at least one more game (at Giants, vs. Jaguars)
    • Dolphins lose at least one more game (at Browns, at Jets)

Verdict: Thanks to their win over the Broncos, the Bengals kept their playoff hopes alive heading into the final week of the season. That being said, the Bengals are in a tough spot here for two reasons: For one, the Chiefs will likely be benching their starters in Week 18, which will make it much easier for Denver to win. And two, the Colts have the easiest remaining strength of schedule with games against the 2-13 Giants and 3-12 Jaguars. However, the Colts won’t have Anthony Richardson, who’s been ruled out for Sunday’s game against New York. Joe Flacco will be getting the start in his place.

What Colts need to get to the playoffs:

    • Colts win out (at Giants, vs. Jaguars)
    • Dolphins win out (at Browns, at Jets)
    • Broncos lose in Week 18 (vs. Chiefs)

Verdict: If this happens, the Colts, Dolphins and Broncos will all finish at 9-8 and although the Colts lost to the Broncos, they’d still get in the playoffs thanks to the Dolphins. With Miami at 9-8, that would create a three-way tiebreaker and the Colts would win that (The Colts would also win a four-way tiebreaker if the Bengals were to also win out in this scenario).

What Dolphins need to get to the playoffs:

    • Dolphins win out (at Browns, at Jets)
    • Broncos lose in Week 18 (vs. Chiefs)
    • Colts lose at least one more game (at Giants, vs. Jaguars)

Verdict: In a head-to-head situation with the Broncos, the Dolphins would get in over Denver based on having a better conference record. The Dolphins would also get in if they end up in a three-way tie with the Bengals and Broncos at 9-8. The problem for the Dolphins is that they likely won’t have Tua Tagovailoa for Sunday’s game against Cleveland. Tua, who has been battling a hip injury, has been downgraded to doubtful, which means it’s very likely that Tyler Huntley will be the starter.

If the Broncos beat the Chiefs in Week 18, then you can throw each of these scenarios out the window because a win over Kansas City will clinch the AFC’s final playoff spot for Denver.

With the Chargers securing a crucial victory in Week 16, the playoff picture for the 2024 NFL season has become even more competitive. However, there is still hope for teams like the Bengals, Dolphins, and Colts to secure a spot in the postseason.

For the Bengals, they will need to win their remaining games and hope for some help from other teams in the AFC. They currently sit on the outside looking in, but with a strong finish to the season, they could sneak into a wild card spot.

The Dolphins, on the other hand, have had a rollercoaster season but are still in the hunt for a playoff spot. They will need to win their remaining games and hope for some key losses from other teams in the AFC.

Lastly, the Colts have been a strong team all season but have hit a rough patch in recent weeks. They will need to regroup and win their remaining games to have a shot at making the playoffs.

With only a few games left in the regular season, every win is crucial for these teams vying for a playoff spot. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season unfolds and if these teams can overcome the odds to secure a spot in the postseason.

  • 2024 NFL playoff picture, standings: Chargers lock up playoff spot; Chiefs seal No. 1 seed in AFC

2024 NFL playoff picture, standings: Chargers lock up playoff spot; Chiefs seal No. 1 seed in AFC

The AFC playoff picture is one game away from having all its teams settled. The Los Angeles Chargers wrapped up their playoff berth with a victory over the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos are one win away from doing the same.

Christmas Day games had major playoff implications around the NFL, thanks to all four of the teams playing holding a spot in the AFC playoffs. The Kansas City Chiefs needed just one victory to lock up home-field advantage in the AFC, and they earned it by defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the opener of the Christmas Day doubleheader.

The Steelers have lost the AFC North lead, as the Baltimore Ravens took over first place in the division with their blowout victory over the Houston Texans. Baltimore is one win away from clinching the AFC North.

Below is a breakdown of the conference standings with the Week 17 slate underway:

    AFC playoff picture

    z — clinched first-round bye
    y — clinched division
    x — clinched playoff berth
    e — eliminated from playoffs

    1. Kansas City Chiefs (15-1)

The Chiefs wrapped up the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage with their win over the Steelers. Kansas City gets the lone bye in the conference and can rest its starters in Week 18.

    Remaining schedule: at Broncos

    2. Buffalo Bills (12-3)

The Bills needed the Chiefs to lose out to still have a shot at the No. 1 seed. That didn’t happen, so the Bills need a win in their final two games to lock up the No. 2 seed.

Remaining schedule: vs. Jets, at Patriots

    3. Baltimore Ravens (11-5)

The Ravens have taken over the AFC North lead with their win and the Steelers’ loss, having a one-game lead over Pittsburgh heading into the final week. A win or a Steelers loss in Week 18 gives Baltimore the division.

    Remaining schedule: vs. Browns

    4. Houston Texans (9-7)

The Texans have already clinched the AFC South. They will be at least the No. 4 seed in the AFC and will have a home game in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

    Remaining schedule: at Titans

    5. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6)

The Steelers lose the AFC North lead after falling to the Chiefs. They need a win and a Ravens loss in the final week to win the division. They hold the tiebreaker over the Chargers for the No. 5 seed due beating Los Angeles in Week 3.

    Remaining schedule: vs. Bengals

    6. Los Angeles Chargers (10-6)

The Chargers clinched a playoff berth their win over the Patriots. The Steelers hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Chargers for the No. 5 seed.

    Remaining schedule: at Raiders

    7. Denver Broncos (9-6)

The Broncos are a win away from clinching a playoff spot, needing just one victory in their final two games.

Remaining schedule: at Bengals, vs. Chiefs

    8. Indianapolis Colts (7-8)

The Colts are two games out of the final wild-card spot in the AFC, but are eliminated from playoff contention with one loss or if the Chargers and Broncos both win. The Colts have the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Dolphins for the No. 8 seed by virtue of their Week 7 victory and own the tiebreaker over the Bengals based on having a better conference record (6-5) than Cincinnati (4-6).

Remaining schedule: at Giants, vs. Jaguars

    9. Miami Dolphins (7-8)

The Dolphins’ AFC playoff hopes are still alive, but Miami will be eliminated with a loss or if the Chargers and Broncos both win. Miami is two games behind Denver for the final playoff spot and holds the conference-record tiebreaker (6-5) over Cincinnati (4-6).

Remaining schedule: at Browns, at Jets

    10. Cincinnati Bengals (7-8)

The Bengals remain the No. 10 seed in the AFC, needing significant help to earn a playoff berth. Cincinnati needs to jump multiple teams and win out to have a shot at the playoffs, as the Bengals are two games back of the Broncos and play them in Week 17. They can’t lose another game.

Remaining schedule: vs. Broncos, at Steelers

    Eliminated from playoff contention

Six teams are eliminated from the playoff race in the AFC: Raiders, Patriots, Titans, Jets, Jaguars and Browns.

    NFC playoff picture

    x — clinched playoff berth
    e — eliminated from playoffs

    1. Detroit Lions (13-2)

The Lions remain the No. 1 seed in the conference. They are also tied for the NFC North lead with the Vikings, but hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. Detroit will clinch the No. 1 seed with a win and a Minnesota loss.

Remaining schedule: at 49ers, vs. Vikings

    2. Philadelphia Eagles (12-3)

The Eagles remain in the hunt for home-field advantage, but need the Lions to lose out, the Vikings to lose next week and for Minnesota to beat Detroit in Week 18. Philadelphia can clinch the NFC East and the No. 2 seed with a win in one of its final two games.

Remaining schedule: vs. Cowboys, vs. Giants

    3. Los Angeles Rams (9-6)

The Rams lead the NFC West by a game over the Seahawks with two to play. Los Angeles clinches the division next week with a win and a Seattle loss.

Remaining schedule: vs. Cardinals, vs. Seahawks

    4. Atlanta Falcons (8-7)

The Falcons lead the NFC South and can clinch the division with a win and Buccaneers loss. Atlanta holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Tampa Bay and control its own destiny in the division.

Remaining schedule: at Commanders, vs. Panthers

    5. Minnesota Vikings (13-2)

Minnesota remains the top wild-card team in the conference and is tied with Detroit for first place in the NFC North. Detroit still has the division lead via the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Remaining schedule: vs. Packers, at Lions

    6. Green Bay Packers (11-4)

The Packers clinched a playoff berth and are currently the No. 6 seed in the NFC.

Remaining schedule: at Vikings, vs. Bears

    7. Washington Commanders (10-5)

The Commanders lead the Buccaneers and Seahawks by two games for the final playoff spot in the conference. They clinch a playoff berth with a win next week (or a Buccaneers loss).

Remaining schedule: vs. Falcons, at Cowboys

    8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-7)

The Buccaneers dropped from NFC South leaders to out of the playoff picture. They need to finish with a better record than the Falcons to win the division since they lost both games to Atlanta. A loss this week also wraps up a playoff berth for the Commanders.

Remaining schedule: vs. Panthers, vs. Saints

    9. Seattle Seahawks (8-7)

The Seahawks are 1.5 games back of the Commanders for the final wild-card spot after their win over the Bears. They are also 0.5 game back for the NFC West lead, but the Rams hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. A Rams win Saturday doesn’t eliminate the Seahawks from the NFC West, but there is an intriguing playoff scenario in Week 17 which Seattle could lose the division.

    Remaining schedule: at Rams

    Eliminated from playoff contention

The Cardinals, Cowboys, 49ers, Saints, Bears, Panthers and Giants have been eliminated from the playoffs.
