By his own account, Grammy-winning musician and The Roots bandleader Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson has been involved with Saturday Night Live in every possible role — except for the one that he wants most.

“I’ve been a punchline on ‘Weekend Update.’ I’ve been part of a Timothée Chalamet sketch. I’ve been mentioned in monologues,” he says. “I’m a part of that ecosystem almost in every way but the one way I want to be, which is musical guest. … The Roots are working on their 17th album right now, so I’m still hanging on to my dream.”

Now, as SNL marks its 50th anniversary, Questlove has a new documentary, highlighting the musical guests and music comedy sketches featured over the decades. Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music is the work of a storied musician and filmmaker who remembers watching the show when he was a kid growing up in Philly.

“I was there from the very, very beginning,” Questlove says. “[There] was nothing like it. I know that’s the cliché that you’re going to hear a lot about this 50th anniversary, but there was truly nothing like it on television.”

One change he’s noticed over the years, both on SNL and on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he’s bandleader, is that today’s musical guests are more likely to be lip-syncing than their predecessors were. He calls it the “post-Thriller effect,” whereby musicians feel pressure to dance and perform perfectly every time.

“The Thriller effect is, it must be perfect,” he says. “And I’m kind of from the school of warts and all. Like, I love seeing the warts. I love seeing the pimples, the mistakes. To me, that’s the human touch. And I think people need to trust that more. But, you know, things don’t have to be Instagram filter perfect 24/7.”

Part 2 of Fresh Air‘s interview with Questlove, about his other documentary on Hulu, SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), will air in coming weeks.

    Interview highlights

On the documentary portraying things going wrong or not as planned

That’s the thing about SNL is there’s a risk factor involved. And usually it starts with “no.” Like Eddie Murphy talks about, I did not want to do hot tub with James Brown. Justin Timberlake goes on and on about trying to convince Beyoncé to do this “Single Ladies” sketch. Like, everything starts [with] “no.” And it’s, like, “Wow, you almost talked yourself out of history.” And I’m trying to get people in the mind state that, oftentimes we get in our own heads about why something won’t work. And sometimes you just got to take a risk and you never know. This might be part of the American fiber, the history of it.

    YouTube

On a 2004 incident in which Ashlee Simpson was shown to be lip syncing on SNL

Ashlee Simpson had a sore throat and was a little iffy about her singing, so she opted to lip-sync instead. And her drummer, who’s controlling on the music, accidentally plays the wrong song for the second song.

They could have just patiently just stopped the song and started all over again as if nothing happened. But she infamously does a weird dance and runs offstage, kind of humiliated, and they go to commercial. It just so happens that Oz Rodriguez, my co-director of this documentary, said that they also have the audio recording of the production room, like what was happening at the time. And for me, it was so hilarious to hear the producers and the directors inside of the control room. To me, it sounds like a bunch of teenagers that stole their parents’ car in San Francisco and the brakes just give out in a San Francisco hill going down 100 mph. Like, what do we do? Oh no! You get to see what’s under the trunk. And that, to me, is the most fascinating part of SNL, how it’s able to happen every week without fail.

On SNL introducing America to rap

Saturday Night Live is the first time that America and the world will get to see what hip-hop culture is. The very first rap performance on TV is when Deborah Harry hosts the show in 1981 and brings on Funky 4 + 1. … There were other popular groups at the time, like there was Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and The Sugarhill Gang, both [with], like, platinum hits and really music- and culture-changing songs at the time. But she took a liking to this group because it was similar to Blondie, a band that had a woman in the lead of it. …

For me, that’s such an SNL move where those first 10 years, they weren’t about who’s the most popular person to bring ratings? And it was always like the cool factor, like, who’s the most popular person now? Who’s the person under that person that we could give a boost to? And that’s like a prime example of how SNL always had their finger in the pulse of who’s next. And as a result, come 20 years later, a lot of those first-time acts … like them getting Run-D.M.C. before Run-D.M.C. was Run-D.M.C or them getting Prince before Prince was Prince, or the Talking Heads or Devo, whoever. A lot of those risks that they took in the first 10 to 15 years, those guys will wind up being, like, the household names and the fiber of the mainstream once SNL becomes the mainstream, instead of the underground. So Deborah Harry using her power to bring attention to a culture that no one knew about like that is a prime moment of the SNL effect and how it builds American entertainment culture.

On the un-hummable SNL theme song

It’s the most iconic, nondescript theme song. Pretty much any Saturday that The Roots aren’t touring and they’re taping, I’m in the audience, watching, and that, to me, is one of the most humorous things ever. Like, you know it when you hear it, you know, that’s SNL. It’s a feeling. It’s almost like it’s the last theme that offers a feeling, but not any evidence of it. It’s like trying to put water in your pocket or something like that. It’s abundant, but it’s whatever you want it to be. … I admire the fact that SNL, for 50 years, has been able to provide a feeling without necessarily melodic evidence to it.

On musical guests at The Tonight Show being consumed with nerves

I’m really big on micro meditation and just sitting in a quiet room for, like, 10 minutes before I go on, because sometimes you have to just calm yourself down so that you can really focus on what you have to do. But a lot of times, artists are in their own heads and they often talk themselves out of the magic, because when you’re worrying, you’re almost praying for something bad to happen — that’s my definition of worrying. “I hope I don’t mess up.” You’re basically saying, “Hey, I would like to mess up,” just subconsciously. So as a result, most artists will stall, take their time, be an hour late, be two hours late, not show up at all, hijack their career in the name of fear. And as always, once you do it, then it’s, like, that’s all it was? No big deal. But I’m used to it, because I’ve been doing this for a couple of decades. Oftentimes, I’ll pull an artist to the side and just be, like, “OK, I want you to listen to my voice. I want you to inhale. Exhale.” I do that a lot to them, especially the new artists that are nervous and scared.

Ann Marie Baldonado and Anna Bauman produced and edited this interview for broadcast. Bridget Bentz, Molly Seavy-Nesper and Beth Novey adapted it for the web.

  • Olivia Rodrigo’s Latest No. 1 Smash Reappears On The Charts

Olivia Rodrigo has scored three No. 1 hits in the United Kingdom throughout her career when looking at the main and most important list of the most-consumed songs in that country. The most recent of her winners is a bestseller again across the pond, as the former champion returns to multiple tallies—and, oddly enough, simultaneously manages to fall on the only other roster it appears on at the moment.

“Vampire” is a strong seller again in the U.K. this time around, as Rodrigo’s fans—both die-hard and casual—are clearly not tired of the pop-rock tune. The cut is nearing a cumulative year as a bestseller, which is not a common sight for many current-day superstars.

Rodrigo returns highest on the Official Singles Sales chart, which ranks the most-purchased tunes throughout the country, regardless of style or format. “Vampire” flaps its wings and flies back to No. 65 on that tally this time around.

The same hit is also a winner once more on the Official Singles Downloads ranking, which is focused solely on the most-downloaded tracks in the U.K. “Vampire” reappears out of nowhere at No. 72, after not finding space on the list last period.

One might assume that since “Vampire” is selling well enough to find its way back to a pair of sales charts, it would likely be on the rise on any other ranking it appears on, which is compiled in a very similar fashion…but that’s not the case. Rodrigo’s smash actually falls four spaces on the Official Physical Singles tally, as it slips from No. 19 to No. 23. It appears that either sales of “Vampire” via non-physical formats are powering the tune, or perhaps that competition was not nearly as tough on the rankings it returns to when compared to the Official Physical Singles roster.

“Vampire” debuted at No. 2 on the U.K.’s main singles list in July 2023, and it held in that runner-up rung for a month. Then, it looked like the song wouldn’t get a chance to hit No. 1, as it began to decline slightly, though it lived inside the top five on the competitive tally for another month. The song finally reached the throne in its ninth frame on the roster, and it stayed there for just one turn.

Rodrigo collected her third No. 1 smash in the U.K. when “Vampire” mustered the strength to soar to the summit. Her debut album Sour earned the young talent two champions, as both “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U” became rulers, and they helped establish her as a powerful new name in the global music industry.

Olivia Rodrigo’s Latest No. 1 Smash “Good 4 U” Reappears On The Charts

Olivia Rodrigo’s hit song “Good 4 U” has once again made a splash on the music charts, reappearing as a top contender for the No. 1 spot. The catchy pop-punk track, which has already spent weeks at the top position, continues to captivate listeners with its relatable lyrics and infectious melody.

Fans of the rising star have been eagerly streaming and downloading the song, propelling it back up the charts and solidifying Rodrigo’s status as a musical force to be reckoned with. With her debut album “SOUR” receiving critical acclaim and multiple hit singles under her belt, it’s clear that Rodrigo is here to stay.

As “Good 4 U” climbs its way back to the top, it’s no surprise that Rodrigo’s loyal fanbase is celebrating the success of yet another chart-topping hit. With her raw talent and undeniable charisma, the future looks bright for this young superstar.

  • Nicolas Cage’s Best Comedy Is Blowing Up Netflix’s Top Charts

In 2022, Nicolas Cage played Nicolas Cage in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” a delightful comedy outing that saw the veteran star come across as what /Film’s Jacob Hall described as “often nuanced, generally restrained, and painfully, awkwardly human.” That’s quite an accomplishment for Cage, who has been known for anything but his restraint in the last couple of decades. Even when he starred in the most terrifying horror movie of 2024, “Longlegs,” he played the mysterious and creepy serial killer with an over-the-top relish. I went into that theater wondering if we’d see some kind of uncharacteristic restraint on Cage’s behalf, but after he started scream-singing five minutes into the movie I thought, “Nope!” Not to say his performance was bad, but if you saw him in David Gordon Green’s 2013 effort “Joe,” you might too be hoping for more of the quietly brooding older Nic Cage and less of the gonzo performances he’s become known for.

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” certainly gives Cage room to go off the rails in an effort to reclaim some ownership of his perpetually-memed facial expressions and line deliveries. But his performance in the film clearly had enough nuance to make the film more than further off-the-wall Cage nonsense.

Co-written and directed by Tom Gormican, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” sees Cage play a fictionalized version of himself whose acting career is on the rocks. The divorced actor begrudgingly accepts an offer of $1 million to appear at super-fan Javi Gutiérrez (Pedro Pascal)’s birthday party, only to end up on an odyssey that sees him working for the CIA to try and uncover the truth about Gutiérrez and his alleged arms dealing/kidnapping of a politician’s daughter. Cage embraces his movie role personas to get the job done, making for full-on meta commentary on the actor’s own life and career that also happens to be one of the best comedies of the last few years. Now, the film has hit Netflix and viewers have seemingly taken to its meta stylings, sending the film shooting up the charts just a day after it debuted.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent takes over Netflix

By the end of its theatrical run, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” had managed to pull in $29 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. Not exactly a huge financial success, then, but the critics were at least pleased. The film currently enjoys an 87% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 318 reviews. That makes it one of Nic Cage’s highest-rated films of the last five years (and as you might expect, he’s been in a lot of them during that time). Even “Longlegs” isn’t as highly-rated as Tom Gormican’s action comedy.

As such, it’s nice to see a critical success doing well on the Netflix charts, which are so often full of some of the worst streaming dross in the entire streaming sphere. (Kevin Hart’s “Lift” was number one on Netflix this time last year…)

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” arrived on Netflix January 16. 2025, and proved to be an immediate hit. At the time of writing, the movie is number four on the U.S. most-watched film charts. According to FlixPatrol, a site that aggregates viewing data from all the major streaming platforms, the film debuted in the fourth spot on January 17, just a day after it hit the service. That bodes well for Nic Cage’s comedy reaching the top of the charts, perhaps before the week is even out.

Can Nic Cage reach number one?

At the time of writing, a French action thriller is number one on Netflix. The Rodolphe Lauga-directed “Ad Vitam” is essentially a French version of “Taken,” which considering the fact that Liam Neeson has been making his own “Taken” rip-offs ever since starring in the original, seems like fair play to me. Unfortunately for Nic Cage and his action comedy, “Ad Vitam” has been number one in the U.S. for a full six days. Not only that, but viewers around the world have also sent it to the top of the charts in various other countries, making this one heck of a challenge for “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” to overcome.

But considering the film debuted at number four just a day after it hit the service, perhaps it will be the thing that finally topples Lauga’s actioner. In order to accomplish such a feat, however, Cage and co. will also have to overcome perhaps an even more powerful enemy in the form of the Minions. “Despicable Me” and “Despicable Me 2” currently occupy the second and third spot on the Netflix U.S. charts respectively, and they’ve been there for some time, too. If “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” can leap these two juggernauts, then, it will be yet another win for one of Cage’s best modern efforts. What’s more, it will be a nice little reminder that Netflix can serve up more than formulaic actioners and movies that would otherwise have been forgotten direct-to-DVD duds — just like when Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic “Interstellar” soared on the Netflix charts to kick off the new year.

Nicolas Cage’s Best Comedy Is Blowing Up Netflix’s Top Charts

Nicolas Cage is no stranger to the spotlight, and his latest comedy film is proving to be a hit with audiences on Netflix. The actor’s film, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” has quickly climbed the streaming platform’s charts, garnering rave reviews and generating buzz online.

In the film, Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself, struggling with his career and personal life. When he is offered a hefty sum of money to attend a superfan’s birthday party, Cage finds himself in a whirlwind of events that blur the lines between reality and fiction.

Fans of Cage are praising the film for its hilarious and self-aware humor, as well as the actor’s electrifying performance. With its unique premise and star-studded cast, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” has quickly become a must-watch for comedy lovers everywhere.

If you’re in need of a good laugh, be sure to check out Nicolas Cage’s latest comedy on Netflix. You won’t be disappointed!

  • Christopher Nolan’s Sci-Fi Epic Is Soaring On Netflix’s Charts

Christopher Nolan’s Sci-Fi Epic Is Soaring On Netflix’s Charts

As we enter 2025, the future of the box office looks as uncertain as ever, but if there’s one thing we know for sure it’s that we’re all destined (or doomed, take your pick) to scroll the Netflix interface for years to come. In recent weeks, amid the usual festive fare, the streamer offered up its usual cavalcade of kind of okay “content” that exited our collective cortex as quickly as it entered. Netflixers sent Megan Fox’s sci-fi thriller “Subservience” to the top of the streamer’s charts over the festive period, while the Keira Knightley-led spy thriller series “Black Doves” similarly triumphed in the Netflix rankings.

But Netflix’s 2024 wasn’t entirely defined by slickly-produced yet somehow instantly forgettable films and TV shows. Amid the 10 best Netflix movies of 2024, we had some real standouts, including what proved to be a breakout turn for Aaron Pierre in the excellent “Rebel Ridge” and the affecting family drama of “His Three Daughters.”

Still, 2025 will no doubt see the onslaught of media continue. But as we prepare for the cavalcade of streaming dross to begin anew, the year has at least gotten off to a decent enough start. Streaming audiences have even given us some hope by sending a modern sci-fi classic to the top of the Netflix charts in the form of what might be Christopher Nolan’s best movie: “Interstellar.”

Interstellar rockets to the top of the Netflix charts

In 2024, Christopher Nolan followed up what was already a banner year for him in 2023 with yet more succcess. Having directed the first box office blockbuster to win a Best Picture Oscar in 20 years with “Oppenheimer” the year prior, 2024 saw Nolan re-release his 2014 effort “Interstellar” in theaters, which became a box office hit 10 years after it first debuted. Now, the film has made its way to Netflix, where it has once again found major success.

“Interstellar” hit Netflix January 1, 2024, and despite already being a well-known sci-fi epic that has been part of the cultural conversation for a decade, immediately started to rise up through the most-watched charts. According to FlixPatrol, a site that tracks streaming viewership data across the various platforms, the movie debuted in the U.S. most-watched film charts at number three as of January 2. It remains in the third spot as of January 3, but could very well reach number one over the coming week. To do so, however, it will have to compete with exactly the kind of middling streaming movies that seem designed as anti-Nolan entertainment.

    Interstellar versus the streaming-scape

If we’re taking an optimistic approach, the Netflix success of “Interstellar” at least suggests there’s hope for the streaming sphere in 2025. While the streaming popularity of something like the Michael Fassbender flop “The Snowman” back in 2023 seemed to suggest Netflixers would watch anything, Christopher Nolan continues his mission to prove that audiences are still eager for high-quality cinematic offerings in the streaming age. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see how “Interstellar” fares against the “Die Hard 2”-style Christmas action thriller “Carry-On,” which currently occupies the top spot on the U.S.’ most-watched charts.

The Taron Egerton-starring actioner is exactly the kind of thing that Netflix has become known for. It’s an entertaining watch that overall doesn’t do much to prevent it from being completely buried beneath the hail of “content” to come, ultimately dooming it to the crammed annals of streaming history. It will therefore be interesting to see whether “Interstellar” can topple “Carry-On” or whether the streaming movie remains the king of the charts. Nolan’s sci-fi epic will also have to overcome Ron Howard’s 2015 adventure drama “In the Heart of the Sea,” which is currently in the number two spot stateside.

Meanwhile, Nolan, who will soon bring a Greek epic to the big screen with his upcoming 2026 project “The Odyssey,” likely isn’t too bothered either way about “Interstellar” charting on Netflix. The director is famously fond of physical media, and has spoken widely about the dangers of streaming-only media. Still, it’s impressive to see the movie taking multiple wins 10 years after it first released.

Christopher Nolan’s latest sci-fi epic, “Tenet,” has been dominating Netflix’s charts since its release on the streaming platform. The film, which stars John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, has been praised for its mind-bending plot, stunning visuals, and impressive action sequences.

“Tenet” follows a secret agent who must manipulate the flow of time to prevent World War III. The film’s complex storytelling and intricate time-travel mechanics have captivated audiences, making it a must-watch for sci-fi fans.

Since its debut on Netflix, “Tenet” has climbed to the top of the streaming platform’s charts, proving to be a hit with viewers around the world. With its gripping storyline and impressive special effects, Christopher Nolan’s latest masterpiece is a must-see for anyone looking for a thrilling cinematic experience.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to watch “Tenet” on Netflix and see why this sci-fi epic is making waves on the streaming charts. Get ready to be blown away by Christopher Nolan’s visionary storytelling and immerse yourself in a world of time-bending action and intrigue.

‘Juror No. 2’ topped streaming charts after being buried in theaters. Cedric Yarbrough hopes people see his dramatic breakthrough performance.

After a limited theatrical release, people can now finally stream Juror No. 2 on Max.

The star-studded film from 94-year-old director Clint Eastwood is a courtroom drama that follows a soon-to-be father (Nicholas Hoult) who sits on a jury for a murder case. During the trial, he realizes he himself is aware of the circumstances surrounding the night the woman died. He must then confront a challenging moral dilemma — does he convince the jury to convict an innocent man, or dredge up his past?

The film received rave reviews, adding to the confusion about why it was so difficult to see in theaters. Eastwood skipped its world premiere, and Variety reported that Warner Bros. was “burying” the movie. When it became available to purchase on VOD, it topped the charts. It’s also currently the No. 1 most streamed movie on Max.

Yarbrough spoke to Yahoo Entertainment about his pivot, the movie’s limited release and working with a legendary director.

Why did you want to be a part of this project?

I mean, come on! To be able to work with such talented people, and to work with an institution like Clint Eastwood — he is film. He’s been on both sides of the camera for so many years and is able to churn out things that are thought-provoking and change the landscape of filmmaking. It was an honor and blessing. And I needed a job, frankly. I’m like, let’s do some work. A lot of people know me from my comedy — they don’t know me for my dramatic work. So this was an opportunity to flex that.

Comedy is what most people know you for, for sure. What was it like auditioning for this dramatic role?

The process is very different now than it was pre-COVID. Juror No. 2 was an audition tape that my friend helped me record. From what I’ve been told by the casting director and from some of the producers is that [Eastwood] saw my tape and was like, “That’s our Marcus King, right there.” I was just so flabbergasted and fortunate that he saw it. He’s extremely trusting of his actors, his staff, producers and people that he’s worked with for so many years. When a director of his caliber trusts you, you will go through a train for him. With this possibly being his last film, you want to make sure the product matches all the products that he’s put out for so long.

I’m sure you saw that when this movie first came out, it wasn’t played in many theaters. Clearly, people wanted to see it, though, because it performed really well when it was released on VOD. Did you have any thoughts about that?

Personally, I do think it should have been in more theaters. This is the type of film that is evergreen. It’s about morality. You don’t have to enjoy superhero films to enjoy this kind of filmmaking that is for grown-ups. I think a lot of people love sequels and flashy superhero films, but what about those of us who really enjoy a good story and great performances and great direction and sound design and all of that? And watching it with strangers in the dark is still really cool. I like my house, but I love being outside of my house and enjoying a film of this magnitude with Clint Eastwood, Toni Collette, Nicholas Hoult — he’s on fire right now with The Order, Nosferatu, the new Superman you wanna see that guy in a theater! And J.K. Simmons, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris Messina, Leslie Bibb and [gesturing to himself] this weirdo — come on! I’m happy that people are now seeing the film, because it’s one of our best this year.

I’m really excited for you. Looking at your social media, I saw you posted a video with your Reno 911! co-star Niecy Nash. Can you give any hints about what you’re working on?

No, I cannot. But I love that lady so much! We did The Bernie Mac Show together and The Soul Man, Cedric the Entertainer’s show … but [Nash and I] have a project we’re doing, and I think people are going to be very excited to see us match wits again along with some amazing other people.

If you could do anything right now, what would you do? Who would you work with?

I want to work with everyone. I want to work with a lot of different casting directors, or at least for them to at least see me in a different light — that I don’t do just one thing. I come from the theater, that’s where I was trained. I’m ready to be in a musical. Broadway, hello, please! I love performing live. I’m hoping this will open up the ability for comedic actors to do drama. Drama is life. Drama is what we deal with. Even funny people have to deal with some sorrow and despair — that’s what life is. It takes a little bit of something extra to make something comedic. Look at some of us comedic actors to make you cry or make you feel a little bit more on the dramatic side, we’re capable. Call me, I’m available.

Juror No. 2 is now streaming on Max.

Cedric Yarbrough, best known for his comedic roles in shows like “Reno 911!” and “Speechless,” is making waves in the drama genre with his breakthrough performance in the film “Juror No. 2.” Despite being buried in theaters, the film has recently topped streaming charts, bringing attention to Yarbrough’s impressive dramatic abilities.

In “Juror No. 2,” Yarbrough plays a pivotal role as a conflicted juror who must grapple with difficult moral decisions during a high-profile trial. His performance has been praised for its emotional depth and nuance, showcasing a side of Yarbrough that audiences have never seen before.

Yarbrough has expressed his hopes that more people will discover his work in “Juror No. 2” and appreciate his versatility as an actor. He has proven that he is capable of tackling a wide range of roles, from comedy to drama, and is eager to continue pushing boundaries and challenging himself in future projects.

Fans and critics alike are buzzing about Yarbrough’s performance in “Juror No. 2,” and it’s clear that he has solidified his place as a talented and versatile actor in Hollywood. Keep an eye out for Cedric Yarbrough’s future projects, as he continues to impress and surprise audiences with his incredible talent.

  • John Travolta’s ‘Grease’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ Top the Charts on Pluto

John Travolta’s ‘Grease’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ Top the Charts on Pluto

Two of John Travolta’s most famous movies have topped the charts on Pluto. Grease (1978) and Pulp Fiction (1994) are currently streaming for free and sit at #6 and #7, respectively. Both movies were popular and influential when they debuted, and have stood the test of time, as new generations have discovered both. And the two movies couldn’t be more different, with one being a musical and the other a crime thriller with a non-linear structure.

Travolta was coming off his hit film, Saturday Night Fever in 1977 when Grease opened a year later and became a beloved hit, earning nearly $160 million at the domestic box office on a $6 million budget (not counting releases). The instant classic about a greaser named Danny (Travolta) falling in love with Sandy (Olivia Newton John), a well-to-do girl, cemented his major movie star status, and is considered one of the greatest musicals ever.

By the time Pulp Fiction opened in October 1994, Travolta’s career had more or less stalled out. While Look Who’s Talking had briefly revitalized his career in 1989, the movies released prior and after were mostly forgotten. Director Quentin Tarantino’s classic helped to re-launch Travolta’s career, and he was soon being paid tens of millions of dollars to star in films like Broken Arrow, Michael, and Face/Off.

‘Pulp Fiction’ Recently Celebrated its 30th Anniversary

Pulp Fiction celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024 with a 4K screening in theaters last October and an Ultra HD Blu-ray and digital release in December. Tarantino’s film defied many cinematic conventions when it debuted at Cannes in 1994, going on to win the Palme d’Or, the prestigious film festival’s top award.

While the 1990s saw the rise of the indie / art house feature, Pulp Fiction stood apart from other famous films released that decade, including El Mariachi, Gas Food Lodging, Clerks, The Usual Suspects, Fargo, and others. Its ode to crime pulp stories and non-linear narrative entranced both audiences and critics alike, and currently sits at 92% critical and 96% audience Fresh ratings at Rotten Tomatoes.

Why Quentin Tarantino Abandoning The Movie Critic Is Actually Good News

If Quentin Tarantino is only going to direct 10 movies, then his final one needs to be one of his best, not a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Pulp Fiction’s influence also spawned a slew of copycats, including Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Even Go (1999), directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) and written by John August (Big Fish) shares similar narratives and non-linear structure.

And unlike his peers, Tarantino never became a fully mainstream director, choosing instead to focus on films like Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Vols. 1 and 2 (he considers them one film in two parts), and Django Unchained. He has claimed he will direct only one more film following his ninth, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which debuted in 2019.

There isn’t any word on what his tenth and final film will be, following his abandoning of The Critic earlier in 2024. The film, set in the 1970s, had Brad Pitt starring and followed a film critic who wrote for a magazine like Playboy, and was inspired by Pauline Kael, an influential critic.

You can make it a John Travolta double feature with Grease and Pulp Fiction which are both streaming free on Pluto.

In a surprising turn of events, John Travolta’s iconic films ‘Grease’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ have skyrocketed to the top of the charts on Pluto. Despite being released decades ago, these two movies have captured the hearts of Plutonians and are now considered classics in their own right.

‘Grease’ is a beloved musical that follows the romance between Danny Zuko (Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) as they navigate the ups and downs of high school love. The catchy songs and vibrant dance numbers have made ‘Grease’ a timeless favorite among audiences of all ages.

On the other hand, ‘Pulp Fiction’ is a gritty and groundbreaking film directed by Quentin Tarantino, in which Travolta plays the role of Vincent Vega, a hitman with a penchant for dancing. The film’s nonlinear storyline, sharp dialogue, and memorable characters have solidified its status as a modern classic.

It seems that the residents of Pluto have a keen appreciation for Travolta’s diverse talents as an actor, from his smooth moves in ‘Grease’ to his intense performance in ‘Pulp Fiction’. These films continue to resonate with audiences across galaxies, proving that good storytelling knows no bounds.

2025 NCAA Schedule & Depth Charts

Good times and bum times, I’ve seen them all and my dear, I’m still here.

The complete (save for a few meets for Wilberforce, but we’ll get there) 2025 NCAA schedule is now available in the top menu—up with a solid five days to spare. I’m also aware that this weekend’s meet is no longer called the Pacific Coast Challenge and is now like the American Gold Soaring Over a Flag Eagle Classic, but no.

This season’s depth charts are up as well for our now-86 college gymnastics teams. The latest big news for roster purposes is that Kayla DiCello had more leg surgery (but Florida also added Ly Bui as an early joiner for January) and Haleigh Bryant has a UCL injury that will keep her out of at least the first meet of the season.

    Here we go!

Storytelling with Charts Using AI and Chatbots

In today’s digital age, data visualization has become an essential tool for businesses to understand and communicate complex information. As a data scientist and AI enthusiast, I have found that storytelling with charts using AI and chatbots can greatly enhance the impact and effectiveness of data-driven messages.

By leveraging AI algorithms, we can now automate the process of creating visually appealing and interactive charts that effectively convey key insights. These AI-powered tools can analyze data sets, identify trends, and generate charts that are not only accurate but also visually engaging.

Additionally, chatbots can be integrated into data visualization platforms to provide real-time analysis and context to users. Chatbots can answer questions, provide additional information, and offer suggestions for further exploration of the data.

When combined, AI and chatbots can transform static charts into dynamic storytelling tools that engage and educate audiences. Whether presenting to executives, stakeholders, or the general public, data storytelling with AI and chatbots can make complex data accessible and actionable.

As we continue to embrace data-driven decision-making, the ability to effectively communicate with charts using AI and chatbots will be a valuable skill for data professionals. By mastering this art of storytelling, we can unlock the full potential of data to drive innovation and growth in our organizations.
