  • Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry chasing Sepp Straka after windy, rainy day at Pebble Beach

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Sepp Straka took a trip down to the beach that derailed his round Saturday, and then recovered with four birdies on his last five holes in a cold, whipping wind for a 2-under 70 to reclaim the lead over the Irish duo of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

McIlroy was practically flawless, at least in the nasty conditions, by getting through the exposed stretch of Pebble Beach without dropping a shot and chipping his way around for a bogey-free 65.

Lowry got off to a birdie-eagle-birdie start that allowed for a few mistakes around the turn and he finished with two birdies on the last three holes for a 65.

Just don’t get the idea Irish weather was well-suited for McIlroy (Northern Ireland) and Lowry (Ireland), especially because they now are neighbors in South Florida.

“It might suit me somewhat, but I don’t enjoy it,” Lowry said. “I live in Florida for a reason. I think my game is well-equipped to handle these conditions and I go out there, kind of no fear, and I know I just need to batten down the hatches and make pars when I can.”

The second signature event of the year produced big names at the top, and this one had a distinctive Ryder Cup feel — European, that is.

Straka, the Austrian-born Georgia Bulldog coming off a win in the California desert, blasted out of the sand to 4 feet for one last birdie that putt him at 16-under 200, one shot ahead of McIlroy and Lowry, his Ryder Cup teammates from Marco Simone.

Justin Rose of England, a Pebble Beach winner in 2023 and part of Team Europe later that year, was another shot behind.

Scottie Scheffler, in his 2025 debut delayed by his hand surgery from a freak puncture wound, held it together for a 69 and was six shots behind.

Gone are the days of the old Crosby Clambake, with amateurs having left on Friday. But it was reminiscent of the Clambake weather, not the prettiest pictures but a delight to see golf’s best players have their hands full with a wind ripping off the Pacific Ocean.

Scheffler couldn’t believe it when he hit a 5-iron as pure as can be on the 10th hole and watched it fly only 155 yards, 20 yards short of his target. Lowry knows the feeling. He drilled a 3-iron and came up short.

McIlroy had a suitable game plan. When the wind arrived as he was on the sixth hole, he said he turned to caddie Harry Diamond and said, “Let’s try to chip the ball around today.”

“I feel like I didn’t make a full swing after that,” McIlroy said.

Here’s a look at tee times, groupings and how to watch the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

He had to save par six times from the rough and bunkers, none more valuable than from down in the high grass below the 10th green to 6 feet and a key par putt.

“That was a key up-and-down to just to keep the momentum of the round going,” he said.

The 10th hole is where Straka nearly came undone. His approach sailed well to the right, over the cliff and onto the beach. He went down to the sand and picked up his golf ball, taking the penalty shot instead of trying the dramatic shot off the beach, and did well to salvage bogey.

But he bogeyed the next two holes, going from a four-shot lead early in the round to trailing by two shots. Straka, though, is equipped with newfound confidence and steadied himself on the way in with birdies on the 14th and 15th holes, a 30-foot birdie putt for the only birdie of the day on the par-3 17th and his closing birdie.

It sets up a final round in which six players are separated by two shots and Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 player, hanging around on the edge of contention. He didn’t birdie a par 5 until the last hole — two par 5s on the front were in benign conditions — but made a pair of birdies late.

“I hung in there on a day where I didn’t have my best stuff,” Scheffler said.

McIlroy doesn’t usually have great success on the West Coast — his lone California victory was in early May in the Match Play at Harding Park in 2015 — but has talked about this being a big year for him on several front. Pebble Beach wasn’t at the front of his mind, but it is now.

“It’s really cool to be in contention this early in the season,” he said.

McIlroy and Lowry both began the week making a hole-in-one — Lowry on the seventh hole at Pebble Beach, McIlroy on the 15th at Spyglass — and now the longtime friends from Irish golf will be in the final group with Straka.

“There’s a few courses in the world that you would like to win on and this is definitely one of them,” Lowry said. “So you try not to think about stuff like that and hopefully it comes to you someday.”

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are in hot pursuit of Sepp Straka after a windy and rainy day at Pebble Beach. The challenging conditions didn’t seem to faze Straka, who managed to hold onto his lead heading into the final round of the tournament.

McIlroy and Lowry, however, are not far behind and are determined to close the gap and come out on top. With their skill and experience, they are sure to put up a tough fight in what promises to be an exciting finish.

Stay tuned as these talented golfers battle it out in what is sure to be a thrilling conclusion to the tournament at Pebble Beach. Who will come out on top? Only time will tell.

  • Michigan State basketball, Tom Izzo head to L.A. chasing history

East Lansing — In 30 years of coaching at Michigan State, Tom Izzo can count on one hand how many times he’s taken his Spartans out to Los Angeles for a regular-season game.

In fact, he can count it out on one finger.

Times have changed. If hosting Washington three weeks ago wasn’t enough of a reminder of the Big Ten’s expansion, then this series will be. Michigan State visits Los Angeles for its first pilgrimage to the conference’s new territory, taking on USC at 4:30 p.m. EST Saturday and UCLA at 10 p.m. Tuesday. Both games will be streamed via Peacock.

Michigan State could put together its best start to a season ever as coach Tom Izzo closes in on Bob Knight's Big Ten wins record.

“I’ve gotten calls on, ‘How are you going to handle it?’ How can I handle something I haven’t done before?” Izzo said Monday, before Michigan State beat Minnesota, 73-51, for its 13th straight win. “You’re just giving somebody a lot of BS because you really aren’t sure. And then coming back, they say it’s more difficult. And of course, we got that quick turnaround with Oregon. So we’ve got some challenges in front of us.”

Michigan State basketball fans have plenty to be excited about as head coach Tom Izzo and the Spartans head to Los Angeles to chase history in the NCAA tournament. Izzo, known for his coaching prowess and ability to lead his team to success in March, is looking to add another championship to his impressive resume.

With a talented roster filled with star players like Aaron Henry and Rocket Watts, the Spartans are poised to make a deep run in the tournament. Izzo’s experience and leadership will be crucial as the team faces tough competition on the road to the Final Four.

Michigan State basketball has a rich history of success in the NCAA tournament, and fans are hopeful that this year will be no different. As the Spartans prepare to take on their opponents in L.A., all eyes will be on Izzo and his team as they look to make history once again.

  • Chrisean Rock calls out Blueface’s mom Karlissa Saffold over ‘clout chasing’ at King of Crabs

The drama between Chrisean Rock and Karlissa Saffold, Blueface’s mother, has reignited, this time stemming from the reopening of Blueface’s seafood restaurant, King of Crabs.

Over the weekend, tensions surfaced after Karlissa attended the event and went live on Instagram, prompting Chrisean to accuse her of clout chasing.

Both Chrisean and Karlissa were present at the private dinner celebrating the restaurant’s reopening. They live-streamed separately, with Chrisean dining with a friend and Karlissa seated at a larger table. Chrisean took issue with Karlissa recording her, stating, “We just didn’t like the recording part,” while her friend added, “just didn’t like the clout chasing.”

The strained relationship between the two has roots in past comments made by Karlissa regarding Chrisean and Blueface potentially getting married. Addressing her son’s ultimatum about maintaining a respectful relationship, Karlissa shared, “My son told me to respect his position in order to have a relationship with him, and I promise y’all I’m going to do my best to try.”

Chrisean, while seemingly acknowledging the familial ties, expressed frustration with Karlissa, saying, “I get it — we all related in a way, but keep it cordial,” and criticized her for allegedly taking credit for the restaurant’s reopening. Karlissa responded, attributing the success to divine intervention: “God was the real reason why the restaurant was back up and running. But obviously, there was no child of God there.”

Adding to the tension, Karlissa claimed Blueface’s grandmother alleged that Chrisean wanted to “stomp her out.” She threatened to involve probation authorities if the threats persisted, saying she was taken aback by the negativity.

The Shade Room captured much of the interaction, with fans speculating whether the family dynamic will improve or if these public clashes will continue. As Chrisean and Karlissa remain at odds, the drama surrounding Blueface’s family shows no signs of cooling down.

Chrisean Rock, best known for his viral comedy skits, recently called out Blueface’s mom Karlissa Saffold for allegedly clout chasing at the King of Crabs event. In a now-deleted Instagram post, Chrisean accused Saffold of trying to ride her son’s coattails for fame and attention.

The drama unfolded at the King of Crabs event, where Saffold reportedly approached Chrisean, seeking a photo opportunity with him. Chrisean, however, was not having it and took to social media to express his frustration with Saffold’s alleged clout chasing behavior.

Fans of both Chrisean and Blueface have been quick to weigh in on the situation, with many calling out Saffold for her actions. Some have even questioned her motives and accused her of trying to use her son’s fame for personal gain.

As of now, neither Blueface nor Saffold have responded to Chrisean’s allegations. It remains to be seen how this drama will unfold, but one thing is for sure – clout chasing is never a good look.

  • As Jimmy Butler trade rumors swirl, Mat Ishbia and Suns keep chasing short-term highs

Say this for the Phoenix Suns: They have one of the NBA’s most creative front offices when it comes to finding new and different ways in which to mortgage their future. Never mind that this strategy hit its peak two years ago and it has long since been time to turn this ship around; they’re still plowing full steam ahead and throwing lifejackets overboard as they go.

Sorry, I was in the midst of complimenting the Suns before I got sidetracked. In their way, Phoenix made a creative trade on Tuesday by sending an unprotected 2031 first-round pick to the Utah Jazz in return for three other first-round picks in 2025, 2027 and 2029. These picks aren’t likely to be nearly as valuable, and I’ll explain why in a minute. But in essence, the Suns broke a dollar bill into three quarters to improve their immediate trade flexibility, and The Athletic reported late Tuesday that there is rising optimism that Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler is closer to reaching his desired destination — Phoenix — as a result.

Of course, it’s that same impulsive habit under owner Mat Ishbia — chasing short-term sugar highs while burning the future to the ground — that motivates teams like Utah to enthusiastically participate in these deals.

In the last 18 months, the Brooklyn Nets, Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz all have made bets of some size that the Suns will be terrible between 2026 and 2031. So far, so good: It’s early 2025, and Phoenix is an old, average team with zero cap flexibility and few draft assets.

The thing about having three quarters instead of a dollar bill, however, is that you can give one quarter to one team and one quarter to another team. The Suns essentially split the baby on their most valuable (not to mention only) remaining asset, that 2031 pick,. The obvious way that might matter is if they are involved in a multi-team trade that requires them to send draft capital to two different teams.

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

Suns at a crossroads: Stalled hopes, Jimmy Butler interest and Bradley Beal’s no-trade clause

In this particular case, it also allows the Suns to sidestep around the Stepien Rule, named for former Cavaliers owner Ted Stepien, who had a penchant for trading all his draft picks and leaving the team high and dry for the future. I can’t think of any other recent examples of that.

The Stepien Rule prevents teams from trading first-round picks in consecutive years by requiring that they have at least one pick certain to convey in every two-year window. However, the loophole for Phoenix is that it doesn’t have to be a team’s own picks. (Side note: We’re definitely getting an “Ishbia Rule” at some point in the next two collective bargaining agreements.)

Thus, having already traded their firsts in 2025, 2027 and 2029, and pick swaps in 2026, 2028 and 2030, the Suns couldn’t trade any future firsts aside from that 2031 choice. The picks they got from Utah will likely be at the back end of the first round — the worst of Cleveland or Minnesota’s pick in 2025 (so, likely 29th or 30th) and the worst of Cleveland, Utah or Minnesota’s in 2027 and 2029.

Sidesteppin’ Stepien means everything is back on the table now. The Suns can trade one or more of their swapped picks in 2026, 2028 and 2030, or they can trade one or more of the new picks they got from Utah in 2025, 2027 and 2029. They still can’t move picks in consecutive years, but Phoenix could conceivably mix and match and, for example, trade its swapped pick in 2026 and the pick it received in the Utah trade in 2029,

I bring this up because it could matter for trades that don’t involve Butler. As in, the Suns could send out Jusuf Nurkić and a pick in one trade to get something back, and Grayson Allen and a pick in another trade to get something back.

It’s just hard to believe that’s the actual reason they’re doing this — for two reasons. First, no team, no matter how badly run, is going to make a trade like this and then just say, “Well, now maybe let’s see what we can do?”

They already know the answer. You’re not doing a trade like this on spec; you’re doing it to satisfy a particular need that has already been communicated by another trade partner.

Second, Phoenix probably wouldn’t do this unless it was doing something big, because this is the Suns’ last chip. I can’t emphasize this enough since the Suns keep coming up with deals to squeeze more out of their diminishing draft-pick stock: This is where it ends.

Suns owner Mat Ishbia poses for a photos with Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal before the start of the 2023-24 season. (Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports)

No, they can’t rinse, lather and repeat a year from now. Because of repeatedly going over the CBA’s second apron, the Suns’ 2032 pick will be frozen and they can’t trade it. Ditto for every pick after that until they get their payroll under control.

Sure, they’ll likely trade their 2032 second-rounder within minutes of gaining access to it, but it’s not going to bring back much. The same goes for trading “swaps of swaps” to get access to more seconds, especially now that they’ve already done this on three different picks.

At this point all roads lead to Butler, obviously, given that he is the one glittery, shiny object on the trade market, and the Ishbia-era Suns cannot resist shiny objects. The fact that Phoenix went through with this Utah trade is a sign we’re getting warm, and not necessarily on a two-team deal.

Most notably, a trade involving Bradley Beal going to Milwaukee, Butler going to Phoenix and at least one other team being involved besides Miami, seems highly plausible, based both on reporting by my intrepid colleagues at The Athletic and the common sense of looking at a cap sheet.

The logistics are hairy but not insurmountable: The Bucks have to send out at least $58 million in salary to take back Beal’s $50.2 million salary and stay below the second apron once they backfill the roster for all the empty slots on what is likely a four-for-one or five-for-one deal. Beal would also have to waive his no-trade clause; presumably the teams involved would ascertain whether this was a realistic possibility before marching headlong into a deal.

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

As NBA trade deadline nears, the Jimmy Butler-Heat countdown ticks louder and louder

If we assume Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard and Brook Lopez are off limits, getting to $58 million basically requires the inclusion of Khris Middleton, Bobby Portis, Pat Connaughton and two other low-salary players, possibly MarJon Beauchamp and Chris Livingston. Backfilling the roster with three minimum deals and keeping the roster at 14 the rest of the season would leave the Bucks about a half million dollars below the threshold.

This is where the deal likely takes some time to get to the finish line: All that salary flotsam has to go somewhere, and it’s not in particularly high demand. Multiple teams would likely get involved, and the Heat might end up with only one or two of those Bucks mentioned above. (One interesting sidebar, for instance: Could the Suns possibly stuff a Nurkić-for-Portis sidebar into it? Seems unlikely, but surely they would ask.) From Miami’s perspective, most notably, a deal that ends up with the Heat under the luxury tax is probably a lot more palatable given the fairly minimal draft compensation likely coming their way; a Butler-for-Middleton swap gets them there, but the other Bucks would have to go elsewhere.

And that, in turn, is likely why the Suns made their trade in the first place. A two-team deal with Miami wouldn’t require them to break their bill into coins like this; a multi-team trade, however, likely compensates Miami with one or two of the firsts and then sends the other(s) to compensate other teams for taking unwanted contracts.

Either way, we’ll end up where every Suns deal ends up: They’ll be slightly more competitive in the short term, but they’re Stepien even deeper into the abyss in the long term. I say “long term,” but that doom cycle is basically 24 months away even if everything breaks right, and very possibly more like four months.

Butler, or some other star, would help win a few more games this year, but it won’t change the Suns’ overarching reality: Their best player is 36, they have no draft picks, they have no good young players, and they can’t sign any free agents above the minimum.

Basically, the fields have been salted through 2031. All that’s left to do now is starve. No wonder everybody wants to trade for Phoenix’s picks.

The NBA world is abuzz with rumors of a potential trade involving star player Jimmy Butler, but for Mat Ishbia and the Phoenix Suns, the focus remains on chasing short-term highs.

As the Suns continue to push for a playoff spot and seek to build a competitive team for the future, Ishbia and the front office are keeping their eyes on the prize. While the allure of bringing in a player like Butler is tempting, the team is staying true to its long-term vision of building a sustainable and successful franchise.

With a solid core of young talent and a bright future ahead, the Suns are confident in their ability to compete at a high level without making any drastic moves. While trade rumors may swirl, Ishbia and the Suns are focused on staying the course and building a team that can contend for championships for years to come.

So as the speculation continues to mount, one thing is certain: Mat Ishbia and the Suns are committed to chasing short-term highs while keeping their eyes on the ultimate goal of sustained success.

  • Saquon Barkley ‘chasing greatness’ with 205-yard performance

PHILADELPHIA — Running back Saquon Barkley set a franchise record for rushing yards in a postseason game with 205 to propel the Philadelphia Eagles past the Los Angeles Rams 28-22 in the NFC divisional round on Sunday.

Barkley now has the third-most rushing yards in a season, including playoffs, in NFL history with 2,329. He trails only Terrell Davis‘ marks of 2,331 yards in 1997 and 2,476 yards in 1998.

Scampering through the snow at Lincoln Financial Field, Barkley broke off two rushing touchdowns of 60-plus yards, reminiscent of his 255-yard, two-touchdown performance against these same Rams in Week 12. Thanks in large part to Barkley’s efforts, the Eagles advanced to the NFC Championship Game, where they’ll host the Washington Commanders.

Fans rejoiced by breaking out in “MVP” chants and throwing snowballs after Barkley’s 78-yard TD run with under five minutes to play that helped seal the deal.

“The atmosphere was crazy. It was insane,” Barkley said. “I’ve got a smile on my face thinking about it. This is what you dream about. This is why I came to Philly. I wanted to be part of games like this, and I’m just happy to be a part of it.”

The win did come at a price, as Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts appeared to injure his left knee after a third-quarter sack in which his leg was pinned under him as safety Jaylen McCollough wrestled him to the ground. Hurts said he expects to play Sunday against Washington.

“It was a tough game, a challenging game. I was able to finish the game,” said Hurts, whose mobility was clearly affected after the play. “We’ll see how the week goes.”

Eagles standout rookie cornerback Quinyon Mitchell exited the game in the first quarter because of a shoulder injury and was later ruled out.

Barkley passed a franchise mark for most rushing yards in a playoff game set by Steve Van Buren (196) in 1949, also against the Rams.

Beforehand, Barkley called on a couple of distinguished former running backs for help.

He told ESPN he spoke with LeSean McCoy, who famously rushed for 200-plus yards against the Detroit Lions in the Eagles’ Snow Bowl victory in December 2013, and asked him for advice for running in the elements.

McCoy told Barkley to “run on your toes.” He also said to consult the team’s equipment manager, Greg Delimitros, so Barkley had the right length cleats to be able to cut in the snow.

Barkley also texted with former Rams great Marshall Faulk, wanting to know how to best approach a game versus a team that is gearing up to stop you after having previous success against the same squad.

“He told me, ‘Don’t predetermine plays. Trust your reads and allow your eyes and your feet to be connected. Be patient,’” Barkley said.

After Sunday’s contest, Faulk texted Barkley: “Patience and trust. Great job.”

Barkley’s 205 rushing yards were the fifth most in postseason history. He joined Eric Dickerson as the only players to have a 200-yard rushing game in the regular season and one in the playoffs in their career.

Barkley said he looked up the Eagles’ record for most rushing yards in a postseason game this week in the name of “chasing greatness.”

“I felt like I had a good game last week [against the Green Bay Packers],” he said, “but you want to create a legacy, and I wanted to have one of those types of games. Just visualizing stuff and wondering what the number is. It’s funny how that happened.”

Saquon Barkley ‘Chasing Greatness’ with 205-yard Performance

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley put on a show in Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, rushing for an impressive 205 yards. Barkley’s performance was not only a personal best but also a reminder of his relentless pursuit of greatness on the football field.

Barkley’s explosive runs, agility, and sheer determination on the field left fans and analysts in awe. His ability to break tackles, find openings in the defense, and make big plays when it mattered most showcased his incredible talent and work ethic.

The 24-year-old running back has always set high standards for himself and is never satisfied with mediocrity. Barkley’s commitment to excellence and relentless drive to be the best has earned him the respect of his teammates, coaches, and fans.

As Barkley continues to chase greatness on the field, his 205-yard performance serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication to his craft. With each game, Barkley proves why he is one of the most electrifying players in the NFL and a force to be reckoned with.

Stay tuned as Saquon Barkley continues to make his mark in the league and solidify his legacy as one of the greatest running backs of his generation. #ChasingGreatness #SaquonBarkley #205Yards

Chelsea are looking to sign Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi in the summer, says Bild. The 22-year-old Germany international has a contract until 2027, but is set to depart and could be tempted by a move to the Premier League. Napoli are also keen and had considered a move this month to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who is about to sign for PSG for €60m, but Dortmund are looking for a reported fee of over €50m to sign Adeyemi.

    – Liverpool are in “pole position” to land Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, reports iNews. While Manchester United and Manchester City have also contacted the player’s representatives, the 21-year-old instead favours a move to Merseyside. Kerkez, who has already been likened to Andrew Robertson, isn’t expected to be on the move this month. But the report reveals that an offer in the region of £50 million this summer could bring Bournemouth to the negotiation table.

    – Manchester City are preparing a €60-€65m offer for Juventus left-back Andrea Cambiaso, Gianluca Di Marzio reports. The news follows that of Tuttosport, who revealed that Juve’s asking price was around the €50m mark earlier on Thursday. The Italy international has been a regular in Serie A this season, playing 19 times so far while scoring two goals. Di Marzio states that meetings have already occurred between the two clubs.

    – A total agreement is close between Manchester City and Eintracht Frankfurt over the proposed transfer of Omar Marmoush, reports Florian Plettenberg. Advanced negotiations are already underway as the two clubs attempt to resolve the striker’s transfer fee. On Tuesday night, Marmoush was in action for Frankfurt, scoring and assisting in the side’s 4-1 home win over Freiburg.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has not verbally agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer, reports Sky Sports. Contrary to reports in Spain, the Liverpool defender is yet to commit his future to any club beyond this season, while the Reds continue to knock back approaches from Real Madrid over a winter transfer. Alexander-Arnold is free to negotiate with foreign clubs, with his current Liverpool deal set to expire in June.

    CONFIRMED TRANSFERS

    – Winger Jaden Philogene has joined Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee from Aston Villa.

    – Leicester have signed Parma right-back Woyo Coulibaly for around €2m.

    – Norwich City have signed winger Matěj Jurásek from Slavia Prague for an undisclosed fee.

    – Boca Juniors have signed 25-year-old left-back Ayrton Costa in a permanent deal from Royal Antwerp.

    – USMNT left-back John Tolkin has joined Holstein Kiel from New York Red Bulls in a $3 million deal.

    – Former Leicester City striker Islam Slimani has joined Westerlo on loan from CR Belouizdad.

    – Inter Miami signed defender Gonzalo Lujan to a contract that spans through the 2027 season with an option for 2028.

    EXPERT TAKE

ESPN’s Liverpool-based Correspondent Beth Lindop on a possible move for Milos Kerkez.

There can be no hiding from the fact that Liverpool need a new left-back. Andy Robertson is a club legend but his performances this season have left much to be desired and, with the Scotland international set to turn 31 in March, Arne Slot’s side could certainly benefit from bringing in some fresh blood in that department.

Robertson’s deputy, Kostas Tsimikas, is a solid rotational option but is not the long-term solution to the left-back conundrum. Therefore, the links to Kerkez make a lot of sense.

At just 21, the Hungary international already has plenty of senior domestic and international experience under his belt and has been in impressive form for a Bournemouth team that have been one of the Premier League’s surprise packages this term. That Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes has close connections to the south-coast club, having previously served as their technical director, could help to give Slot’s side the edge in the race to land Kerkez’s signature. But it will cost them.
