  • Chinese app DeepSeek hammers US tech stocks with cheaper open-source AI model

Chinese AI startup DeepSeek is gaining attention in Silicon Valley as the company appears to be nearly matching the capability of chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but at a fraction of the development cost.

DeepSeek has surged in popularity in global app stores since the app was released earlier this month, having been downloaded1.6 million times by Jan. 25 in the U.S. and ranking No. 1 in iPhone app stores in Australia, Canada, China, Singapore, the U.S. and the U.K. Unlike ChatGPT and other major AI competitors, DeepSeek is open-source, allowing developers to offer their own improvements on the software.

The company unveiled R1, a specialized model designed for complex problem-solving, on Jan. 20, which “zoomed to the global top 10 in performance,” and was built far more rapidly, with fewer, less powerful AI chips, at a much lower cost than other U.S. models, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Meta’s Chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, took to social media to speak about the app and its rapid success.

He pointed out in a post on Threads, that what stuck out to him most about DeepSeek’s success was not the heightened threat created by Chinese competition, but the value of keeping AI models open source, so anyone could benefit.

“It’s not that China’s AI is ‘surpassing the US,’ but rather that ‘open source models are surpassing proprietary ones,’” LeCun explained.

The new potential of open source AI development caused waves in the stock market, causing some traders to sell off shares in companies like Nvidia, which develops the computer chips typically necessary for brute-force AI training.

Experts told the Journal that DeepSeek’s technology is still behind OpenAI and Google. However, it is a close rival despite using fewer and less-advanced chips, and in some cases skipping steps that U.S. developers consider essential.

As of Saturday, the Journal reported that the two models of DeepSeek were ranked in the top 10 on Chatbot Arena, a platform hosted by University of California, Berkeley researchers that rates chatbot performance.

While DeepSeek’s flagship model is free, the Journal reported that the company charges users who connect their own applications to DeepSeek’s model and computing infrastructure.

DeepSeek, a Chinese app utilizing open-source AI technology, is making waves in the tech world by offering a more affordable alternative to expensive US tech stocks. This innovative platform is shaking up the industry with its cost-effective approach to AI technology, posing a threat to traditional market leaders.

The DeepSeek app has been gaining traction in the global market, attracting users with its powerful AI capabilities at a fraction of the cost. By utilizing open-source technology, DeepSeek is able to offer a more accessible option for businesses and individuals seeking AI solutions.

As a result, US tech stocks are feeling the pressure as DeepSeek continues to gain popularity and disrupt the market. With its competitive pricing and advanced AI model, DeepSeek is quickly becoming a top choice for those looking to leverage AI technology in their operations.

This development highlights the growing competition in the tech industry and the increasing influence of Chinese technology companies. As DeepSeek continues to grow and expand its reach, US tech stocks will need to adapt to the changing landscape or risk falling behind in this rapidly evolving market.

  • If you switched to Fubo because it was cheaper than YouTube TV, I’ve got bad news

    Summary

    • Fubo TV initially offered better value than YouTube TV with access to local sports at a lower price.
    • A recent price increase by Fubo, making it more expensive than YouTube TV, eradicated this advantage.
    • YouTube TV dominates the live TV services market with over 8 million subscribers compared to Fubo’s 1.6 million.

After YouTube TV raised its price to close out 2024, I started testing out new live TV services. The first one I checked out was Fubo TV, and I came away with a very positive impression. It gave me access to local sports, a cheaper price, and a UI that had a lot in common with YouTube TV, so the transition wasn’t difficult.

Some downsides are a lower quality with much of the content coming in at 720p compared to YouTube TV’s 1080p, but outside of that, the two services were largely the same. Coupled with the lower cost, Fubo was better value for a lot of people. However, that’s not the case any longer. Thanks to price hikes across all Fubo TV plans, the least-expensive package is now $85 per month (not including the regional sports fee), which makes the service now more expensive than YouTube TV. For a service that’s fighting to gain market share from its competitors, going up to a price higher than a service that’s arguably better for a lot of people isn’t the best way of doing it.

Fubo wiped out a major advantage

    Self-inflicted wound

    Fubo

I think one of the biggest advantages Fubo had over YouTube TV was the price. Even though it was by a small margin, it’s important to take wins where you can, and that was a place where it could definitively be used as a selling point. Unfortunately, it lasted for about a month. Another big thing working against Fubo was the lack of Turner networks like TBS and TNT, so the price was the main area that could secure a win for the platform.

There are still some nice features that Fubo offers, like a customizable multi-stream, but that’s more of a cherry on top instead of a clear selling point. With much of the content locked to 720p, price was the key factor and now the service doesn’t even have that. It’s a disappointing change for somebody who was hoping to save some cash.

Even when you broaden the horizons to other services, Fubo doesn’t really stack up anymore. Hulu + Live TV has a deal available for $83 that comes with not only a live TV plan, but subscriptions to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. The reality is that Fubo doesn’t provide a whole lot that other services don’t, and it makes a service that’s already viewed as an underdog become an even bigger one. Since YouTube TV just went up in price, it’s difficult to imagine it happening again so soon, so this price advantage could remain for the remainder of the year.

Rising costs are a problem for all services, and Fubo is far from the only one who has taken this path. Earlier this month, Netflix announced another price hike that makes the already costly streamer even more expensive.

Fubo has a rocky road ahead

    An uncertain future

The price change isn’t great news no matter how you slice it, but the company already has a complicated future. Earlier this month, Disney announced a purchase of the company, and it came as surprising news. Disney already has its own live TV service with Hulu, so adding another one to the umbrella is a head-scratcher.

The deal is still expected to take a year or so to actually go into effect, but it’s not clear what that means for both Hulu + Live TV and Fubo going further. Disney says the two services will remain independent of each other, so even when the deal closes you still have your pick between the two. You’d think the services would borrow from each other, like Hulu + Live TV adopting Fubo’s UI and multi-stream functionality, but it’s not clear if that’s going to be the case.

Speculation is fun to do and all, but there’s not a lot of sense in doing it this early considering how much can change. Ideally, I’d like to see the services take the best features from each other and become even better.

I compared YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV — here’s which one I’d ditch cable for

In the world of cable alternatives, Hulu and YouTube reign supreme, but one may be better for you.

YouTube TV needs a true challenger

    Dominance isn’t good for anybody

For a myriad of reasons, YouTube TV reigns over all other live TV services. According to The Hollywood Reporter, YouTube TV boasts over eight million subscribers, while Hulu + Live TV lags far behind in second place with 4.6 million. Fubo, in comparison, has just 1.6 million. Even when you combine the two, they still come in way behind YouTube.

I can make a good argument that Hulu + Live TV is better value than YouTube TV thanks to the inclusion of all the streaming services for the same exact price, but it looks like I’d be in the minority based on the subscriber numbers. However, there’s a chance people don’t know the type of value Hulu offers, so there could be a marketing problem too. The reality is that YouTube TV does have challengers, but they haven’t been able to carve out a huge market share.

I’ll admit I stuck with YouTube TV for years without even looking into other options. I knew I wasn’t always getting the best deal, but I never thought much about it considering I was happy with the service. It wasn’t until the latest price increase that I finally took a step back to think about how little live TV I watched and how much I was paying for it.

The majority of the services cost around the same price, but there’s still one out there that comes in at a much lower price. That service is Sling TV, but it’s able to do so by completely dropping local channels like FOX, CBS, and ABC. You can soften the blow by picking up an antenna, something I actually did and enjoyed. The stream quality doesn’t match the heavy hitters, but if you’re looking for a cheaper way to watch live TV than what YouTube or Fubo offer, this is a good choice.

Anybody looking for something that has a similar UI to a regular cable subscription, has a wide selection of channels, and is easy to use, I hate to admit that it’s YouTube TV. This could change in the future, but YouTube TV, in my opinion, comes away the winner in that regard.

I wish I knew how terrible Fubo TV looked on a 4K TV before subscribing

Fubo TV has one major thing holding it back.

Hey there Fubo switchers, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you made the switch from YouTube TV to Fubo because of the cheaper price tag, you may be in for a surprise.

Recently, Fubo announced that they will be increasing their prices for both new and existing customers. This means that the cost savings you were enjoying may no longer be there.

It’s always frustrating when prices go up, especially when you made a switch specifically for affordability. But unfortunately, it seems like Fubo is following in the footsteps of other streaming services and raising their prices.

So, if you switched to Fubo for the cheaper price, it may be time to reevaluate your options and see if there is a better deal out there for you. It’s always important to keep an eye on your budget and make sure you’re getting the best value for your money.

Let us know in the comments if you’re affected by this price increase and how you plan to handle it. And remember, there are always other streaming options out there if you need to make a change.

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 and 7 More Hit Games Are Cheaper Than Ever Before

Free Steam games given away all the time, but even after being out for over six years now, Red Dead Redemption 2 has never been free on any platform. And if you can’t get it for free, the next best thing is to get it during the best sale possible which, fortunately for those who haven’t played the Red Dead Redemption sequel yet, is what’s happening right now. Red Dead Redemption 2 has currently dropped down to the lowest price it’s ever reached on Steam, but it’s not alone either. Other massive hits like DOOM and some smaller but still beloved games like Turnip Boy Escapes Tax Evasion are at their lowest prices, too, but not for long.

    Videos by ComicBook.com

As is the case with most Steam sales, these games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Subnautica that are supremely discounted right now aren’t necessarily tied to one blanket sale which means that the discounts end on them at different times. That said, if you’re looking for a new game this weekend, here are eight games on Steam that are as cheap as they’ve ever been.

    Red Dead Redemption 2

$14.99 on Steam until February 6th

Starting with the game that needs little introduction, Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar Games’ most recent title barring any kinds of collections or rereleases. Despite it being out for seven years come October, Red Dead Redemption 2 holds up better than ever on the PC platform thanks to PC-exclusive features and a wealth of mods to keep you busy if you get tired of the main story or running down other players in Red Dead Online.

Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition

$24.99 on Steam until February 6th

Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition is the only version of Nioh 2 that’s on Steam, but that works out anyway considering how cheap it is right now. For reference, Nioh 2 costs $39.99 right now on the PlayStation Store without any sales live, but on Steam, you can get the complete version of Nioh 2 for $24.99 which is also the cheapest it’s ever been.

The Complete Edition for Nioh 2 includes the base game as well as several expansions: The Tengu’s Disciple, Darkness in the Capital, and The First Samurai. Those encompass all the DLCs that have been released for Nioh 2, so it doesn’t get more comprehensive than this at this price.

    Lords of the Fallen

$19.79 on Steam until February 6th

Lords of the Fallen came out back in 2023, so it’s not the newest game, but certainly not old either if you never got a chance to play it before. It’s been on sale from time to time since then, but this is the first occasion that it’s ever dropped to below $20 before on Steam.

While it’s got “Mixed” reviews overall, the revival of the series of the same name is held in high regard as of late thanks to Hexworks cleaning the game up over time. There’s a Deluxe Edition option, too, with more than just in-game extras, but if simple is what you’re after, the base version of Lords of the Fallen can’t be beat at this price.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name

$19.99 on Steam until February 6th

RGG Studio keeps pumping out the Like a Dragon games (or Yakuza games, if you still call them that) with each one often just as well received as the last. The next one up is Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii which comes out on February 20th, but if you need something to hold you over until then, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name has you covered now that it’s cheaper than ever before at just $19.99.

    Children of Morta

$4.39 on Steam until February 3rd

Children of Morta may not enjoy the household-name status of something like Red Dead Redemption 2, but that doesn’t by any means suggest that you should overlook it. The 2019 game has several different bundles and add-ons to keep you busy once you’re done with the core experience, boasts strong reviews on Steam, and costs less than what you’d normally have to pay for a coffee since it’s down to just $4.39 right now.

    Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion

$3.29 on Steam until January 26th

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is a lot of things on this list of Steam discounts. It’s the oddball of the lineup for sure by the name if nothing else, but it’s also the cheapest game on the list since it’s just $3.29. Unfortunately for those who like to think on what games they’ll play next, you don’t have much time for this once since it’s part of a “daily deal” discount which means that the sale will end on January 26th. If you think playing as a trouble-making turnip for around $3 sounds interesting, however, it’s best to add this one to your backlog now rather than when the sale ends.

    DOOM (2016)

$3.99 on Steam until January 30th

Perhaps you saw id Software’s newest game, DOOM: The Dark Ages, during the recent Xbox event and had your DOOM interest renewed ahead of its May release date. If that’s the case, DOOM Eternal is the newest DOOM game that’s able to keep you busy till then. That game is on sale, sure, but it’s not as cheap as DOOM from 2016 which is back down to its lowest price ever recorded at $3.99. DOOM Eternal itself is just $7.99, too, so for just over $10, you’ll be set from now until the release of DOOM: The Dark Ages.

    Subnautica

$9.89 on Steam until January 29th

And finally we have another game that’s a standout in the survival genre: Subnautica. While most survival games put you in the middle of a forest somewhere or in some hellish horror scenario, Subnautica subverts by putting players in the middle of a sea expanding every which way, including down. Subnautica 2 is releasing in early access at some point, but until we figure out what’s going on with that game, you can get the original Subnautica for less than $10 so long as you grab it before January ends.

If you’ve been holding out on playing some of the biggest games of the past few years, now is the perfect time to jump in. Red Dead Redemption 2 and seven other hit games are currently on sale for prices lower than ever before.

From the sprawling open-world of Red Dead Redemption 2 to the intense first-person shooting of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, there’s something for every type of gamer on this list. And with discounts ranging from 20% to 50% off, there’s never been a better time to add these titles to your collection.

So don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to experience some of the best games of recent years at a fraction of the cost. Grab your controller, fire up your console or PC, and immerse yourself in the thrilling worlds of these top games today.
