  • Bompastor reflects on start to 2025 and assesses Chelsea’s key partnerships | News | Official Site

January could not have gone better for Sonia Bompastor and her Chelsea side, with four wins from four matches in all competitions and our place at the top of the WSL cemented.

Ahead of Sunday’s trip to Aston Villa, Bompastor has reflected on this productive period following the winter break.

It is not only our wins that have given her satisfaction, it is the manner they have been earned and the steps the players have taken to advance the team’s development.

‘I’m really pleased with the way we’ve started 2025,’ said Bompastor. ‘We’ve been able to win the games but also have really good performances in possession. We have created a lot of chances in almost every game and were able to score. There have been a lot of positives in and out of possession because we didn’t concede any goals.

‘The fact we are unpredictable has impressed me most,’ added the head coach. ‘We have different players who are able to score, and we also put in a team performance that allows the individuals to express their talent and quality on the pitch.

‘Danger can come from anyone in the team, and everyone plays for the team and the badge. That is what I am most pleased with.’

Bompastor has been able to make full use of her squad in recent weeks, with the start of our journeys in the domestic cup competitions offering game time to some players who have found themselves out of the starting XI in the WSL.

However, the head coach is unfazed by who she picks, such is her trust in the depth of talent at her disposal. She is also delighted to see certain partnerships forming on the pitch, and she has expanded on some that have stood out at the start of the year.

‘What is good is when you change the options it doesn’t affect the team performance and results,’ Bompastor said. ‘It’s always good for a manager to have this quality in your squad.

‘The backline – Millie [Bright] and Nat [Bjorn] – have been working really hard and they have a pretty good chemistry together. They are really solid out of possession and manage the other players.

‘In midfield, the connection between Sio [Nusken] and Erin [Cuthbert] has been impressive. On the right side, Lucy [Bronze] and JoJo [Rytting Kaneryd].

‘I have a lot of quality on our left side,’ continued Bompastor. ‘I have different options as well. One can be Niamh [Charles] as a full-back and Sandy [Baltimore] as a left winger. They are building their connection together. I have different options: Sandy can play lower, and Guro [Reiten] and LJ [Lauren James] can play in that winger position.

‘We have a lot of different options. Mayra [Ramirez] up front is doing well, and we have the option to play Aggie [Beever-Jones] in different forward positions. We have a lot of quality going into every game depending on what we need.’

It is that quality that bodes well for the months ahead.

As we enter the second month of 2025, Chelsea Women’s head coach Sonia Bompastor took some time to reflect on the team’s performance so far and assess the key partnerships that have been crucial to their success.

Bompastor, who took over as head coach in 2024, has seen Chelsea Women make an impressive start to the year, with strong performances in both domestic and international competitions. The team currently sits at the top of the Women’s Super League table and is also in contention for the Women’s Champions League.

One of the key partnerships that Bompastor highlighted was the connection between veteran forward Fran Kirby and new signing Lauren James. The duo has been instrumental in Chelsea’s attacking play, with Kirby’s experience and goal-scoring prowess complementing James’ pace and creativity.

Bompastor also praised the strong defensive partnership between Magdalena Eriksson and Millie Bright, who have been rock-solid at the back and have helped Chelsea keep clean sheets in several important matches.

In addition to on-field partnerships, Bompastor also emphasized the importance of the team’s partnerships with sponsors and supporters. She expressed her gratitude for the continued support from sponsors like Nike and Barclays, as well as the unwavering dedication of Chelsea’s fans.

Looking ahead, Bompastor is optimistic about Chelsea’s prospects for the rest of the season and is confident that the team’s key partnerships will continue to drive their success on and off the pitch. Stay tuned for more updates on Chelsea Women’s journey in 2025.

  • Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku available on loan, but Mathys Tel does not want to leave Bayern Munich

According to a report from Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich could still have the potential to get Chelsea FC attacker Christopher Nkunku if the German table-topper wants him. Per Whitwell, Nkunku is available on loan.

However, it has been widely assumed that to make a move for a player like Nkunku, Mathys Tel would have to agree to leave Bayern Munich on a loan or even a full transfer. Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg (via @iMiaSanMia) is reporting that Tel still does not want to go anywhere, despite his lack of playing time. Plettenger also stated that Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl still wants Nkunku.

Mathys Tel had made it clear internally that he wanted to stay at FC Bayern. But the *lack of* playing time in recent games will still influence his decision. Bayern are not putting any public pressure on him, but things are currently difficult for him under Vincent Kompany. Bayern are aware that Chelsea still have Tel high on their list, with other teams, including some from the Bundesliga, interested as well. Further talks with Tel will take place this week, with Max Eberl still interested in signing Christopher Nkunku.

In Bayern Munich’s last three games, Tel has not made an appearance. Overall, Tel has only played 396 minutes this season across 13 games this season. Tz journalist Philipp Kessler (via @iMiaSanMia) backed up Plettenberg’s report, but did state that Tel wants to be shown a “clear plan” and also that a meeting will take place this week between Bayern Munich and Tel’s camp:

Mathys Tel is currently not interested in a move to Chelsea as he does not see it as the ideal destination for his development. Tel still loves Bayern, but wants to be shown a clear plan. The club will have to follow up their promises with actions in order to keep him. A meeting between the player’s camp and the people in charge at Bayern is planned for this week.

With just a few days left in the transfer window, Tel and Bayern Munich will need to get this situation sorted out quickly.

As for Nkunku, Plettenberg is reporting that Manchester United could make a move for him:

    | Understand Chelsea and Manchester United remain in contact regarding a transfer of Christopher #Nkunku until Deadline Day. #CFC

This is also because a departure of Alejandro Garnacho still remains a possible scenario. #MUFC

Nkunku is open to a move. A deal with FC Bayern is (also) still possible, but it depends on Mathys Tel, who may reconsider his decision to stay at Bayern this week.

But Tel, currently not considering a move to Chelsea as per @kessler_philipp.

Is Bayern Munich setting the bar too low for itself with some of the decisions that it is making? Where does Bayern need to to improve the roster now…and in the future? Should the club just stay quiet about Joshua Kimmich’s contract situation? We think so! Let’s talk about all of that and more on the Bavarian Podcast Works Show. According to recent reports, Chelsea has shown interest in signing Christopher Nkunku on loan from RB Leipzig. The 24-year-old midfielder has been in impressive form this season, and Chelsea sees him as a valuable addition to their squad.

However, there seems to be a stumbling block in the negotiations as Mathys Tel, a promising young player from Bayern Munich, is not willing to leave the German giants. Tel has been linked with a move to Chelsea as part of a potential swap deal for Nkunku, but it seems he is determined to stay at Bayern Munich and continue his development with the club.

It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold, but Chelsea will have to explore other options if they are unable to secure Nkunku’s signature. Nkunku, on the other hand, will be hoping to make a positive impact at Chelsea if a deal can be reached. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing transfer saga.

  • Cole Palmer outshining Phil Foden as Chelsea’s new leader prepares for Man City reunion – The Radar | Football News

Welcome to The Radar, a Sky Sports column in which Nick Wright uses a blend of data and opinion to shed light on need-to-know stories from up and down the Premier League. This week:

    Palmer second only to Salah?
    Murillo’s outrageous long shots
    Van Nistelrooy’s Leicester woes

    Foden face-off for ever-improving Palmer

Cole Palmer will hope to show Manchester City what might have been when he returns to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The 22-year-old, a revelation for Chelsea following his £42.5m arrival last season, continues to go from strength to strength.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Cole Palmer replicated some memorable Premier League goals when he sat down goalkeeper Mark Travers with his clever finish against Bournemouth

Chelsea go into the game two points ahead of City in the table, a 20-point swing from last season which can be partly attributed to the contrasting fortunes of their No 10s.

While Phil Foden is only just finding form after an indifferent start to the campaign, Palmer has picked up where he left off, the goals and assists flowing to such an extent that only Mohamed Salah has a higher combined total since his move to Chelsea.

Foden, of course, won a PFA and FWA Player of the Year double last year. He has also scored four goals in his last two Premier League appearances, against Brentford and Ipswich.

Over the course of the last season and a half, though, Palmer comes out comfortably on top both as a scorer and a creator.

    Radar graphic
    Image:
Cole Palmer boasts superior numbers to Phil Foden

Their meeting makes for an intriguing sub-plot given Foden’s presence was one of the reasons for his fellow academy graduate’s exit. And Palmer’s exploits this term are arguably even more impressive than last season’s given the attention he is facing.

Palmer is now man-marked in most games. He is being fouled 2.1 times per 90 minutes compared to only 0.9 times last season. “No one really knew much about him when he came so it was a free-hit for him,” said Paul Merson last month. “Now he is the big boy. Teams are trying to stop him but they can’t.

    Kick off 5:30pm

“That shows you how good he is.”

Palmer’s solution, implemented with the help of head coach Enzo Maresca, has been to take up positions right across the front line. He is nominally Chelsea’s No 10, having mostly been used off the right last season, but he goes where the space is, encouraged to drift.

    Radar graphic
    Image:
Cole Palmer’s heat map this season shows the evolution of his role

It helps, of course, that he remains seemingly impervious to pressure, a trait typified by his stoppage-time penalty in Chelsea’s 4-4 draw against his former club at Stamford Bridge last term and one which continues to shine through in his perfect spot-kick record.

He has embraced an altogether different level of responsibility to Foden, accounting for 46 per cent of Chelsea’s goals and assists since his arrival, compared to Foden’s 25 per cent for Manchester City. That responsibility is not limited to scoring or creating, either.

Palmer did neither in Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Wolves on Monday Night Football and yet Maresca labelled his performance one of his best. “He was there asking for the ball in a difficult moment for the team in the second half,” he said. “He was the leader of the team.”

It is more evidence of a player adapting, evolving and finding ways to keep getting better. Saturday’s meeting with his former club Manchester City, and his former team-mate Foden, is a chance to show them his progress first-hand.

    Maverick Murillo is worth celebrating

Nottingham Forest supporters had more reasons to celebrate this week as Murillo and Chris Wood signed new contracts at the City Ground. The pair have been key figures in the side’s remarkable transformation under head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

Murillo, in particular, has been a joy to watch since his arrival from Corinthians at the start of last season. A keen dribbler who loves a shot from long range, the Brazil international’s maverick tendencies are rare in the modern game and rarer still from a centre-back.

Murillo has made seven more successful dribbles than any other centre-back
    Image:
Murillo has made seven more successful dribbles than any other centre-back

His player-of-the-match performance in the recent 1-1 draw with leaders Liverpool summed up the breadth of his offering.

Murillo was imperious defensively, his total of 17 clearances the highest by any player in a Premier League game all season. But he also took any chance he got to rampage forward.

In the first half, there was a thumping shot from 35 yards out which whistled just past Alisson’s right-hand post. In the second, he had an effort blocked from near the halfway line.

Murillo's shot location map highlights his love of long-range shooting
    Image:
Murillo’s shot location map highlights his love of long-range shooting

Last season, he tried his luck from even further out, taking two shots from inside his own half, one of which, against Luton in March, measured at 78 yards from goal and required a panicked save from a back-peddling Thomas Kaminski, who pushed it over the bar.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Murillo nearly scored from 78 yards out against Luton last season

His ambition shines through on the pitch and it was also clear in conversation with him soon after his arrival in England last season, when he declared Forest could reach “unimaginable heights”.

It felt fanciful but here were are. Two-thirds into the campaign, Forest sit third, level on points with second-placed Arsenal. His new contract suggests he believes the best is yet to come.

    Van Nistelrooy under pressure

Ruud van Nistelrooy takes his struggling Leicester side to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday having been booed and taunted with cries of “you don’t know what you’re doing” by fans during their 2-0 loss to Fulham at the King Power Stadium.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Watch highlights from Leicester’s loss to Fulham

The catalyst was the withdrawal of playmaker Bilal El Khannouss when Leicester were trailing in the second half. Van Nistelrooy opted not to explain the decision after the game but it was made to look worse by Fulham’s second goal arriving minutes later.

The Dutchman’s tenure started well, with Leicester beating West Ham 3-1 in his opening game in charge at the beginning of December. But they have not won since. The defeat to Fulham was their seventh in a row in the Premier League. Performances have got worse, not better.

Leicester's form has worsened under Ruud van Nistelrooy
    Image:
Leicester’s form has worsened under Ruud van Nistelrooy

Steve Cooper was not a popular appointment given his ties to Nottingham Forest but supporters fear the club have harmed their chances of staying up, rather than helped them, with their choice of replacement and it is easy to understand why.

Van Nistelrooy has of course been dealt a difficult hand. The squad is clearly underpowered and progress to strengthen it has been slow in the January transfer window. But the mood in the stands will only worsen if they see more of the same against Spurs on Sunday.

  • Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca: Cole Palmer is our Mohamed Salah

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has compared forward Cole Palmer‘s influence on the team to that of Premier League top scorer Mohamed Salah‘s on Liverpool.

Palmer joined the west London club from Manchester City in September 2023 and has been their standout performer since, scoring 22 league goals last term under Mauricio Pochettino and adding 14 more to that tally this season, along with six assists.

Salah, meanwhile, sits atop the league’s scoring chart this campaign having contributed 18 goals and 13 assists to help Arne Slot’s Liverpool establish a six-point gap at the top of the league with a game in hand.

Maresca said, however, that it was not just Palmer’s efficiency in the final third that make comparisons to the Egypt international pertinent, but his willingness to compete in challenging situations.

“He [Palmer] is improving a lot but not just in terms of numbers of goals and assists,” Maresca said in his news conference on Friday. “The second half against Wolves for me was one of the best moments since I arrived here. He was showing personality, he was asking for the ball in any moment that the team needed it.

“Liverpool when they have some [tough] moments, Salah is asking for the ball. Arsenal when they have some problem, [Martin] Ødegaard is asking for the ball.

“We need that kind of player when we are in some difficult moments, who is turning to his teammates and saying: ‘Give me the ball, don’t worry, I will be in charge.’

“This kind of personality that we have to show in a difficult moments. Against Wolves in the second half he was top.”

Chelsea take on City at Etihad Stadium on Saturday in a rematch of both teams’ opening game of the season — a game that Pep Guardiola’s team won 2-0 — and Maresca said that despite Palmer’s irrepressible form since moving to the capital, his former club will have few regrets.

“Having so many options there I think it was difficult for Pep to give Cole minutes,” Maresca said.

“No one at City was thinking that Cole was not good enough. Everyone was sure that he is a top player.

“The problem was that if Cole played then Phil Foden has not to play, or [Kevin] De Bruyne. It’s a matter of balance and a matter of decisions.”

Chelsea head into the clash in fourth place in the Premier League, two points ahead of City in fifth.

Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca: Cole Palmer is our Mohamed Salah

In a recent interview, Chelsea assistant coach Enzo Maresca made a bold comparison between Manchester City’s young talent Cole Palmer and Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah. Maresca praised Palmer’s skill, creativity, and ability to change games, likening him to Salah in terms of his impact on the pitch.

Maresca emphasized Palmer’s versatility and intelligence on the field, highlighting his ability to play in multiple positions and make crucial decisions in high-pressure situations. He also noted Palmer’s work ethic and dedication to improving his game, drawing parallels to Salah’s relentless drive and determination to succeed.

With Manchester City currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table, Palmer’s standout performances have not gone unnoticed by fans and pundits alike. As he continues to impress with his goal-scoring prowess and playmaking abilities, it’s clear that the young midfielder is on track to reach the same heights as Salah.

As Chelsea prepares to face Manchester City in the upcoming weeks, all eyes will be on Palmer as he looks to make a name for himself on the biggest stage. If he can continue to deliver outstanding performances like Salah, there’s no doubt that he will become a key player for his team and a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League.

  • Trevoh Chalobah: From Chelsea’s ‘bomb squad’ to emergency recall

Photographs from Chelsea’s Cobham training ground on Friday appeared to support Maresca’s description of Chalobah’s “happy” demeanour.

But each transfer window must bring a sense of de ja vu for Chalobah, having been made available for sale in the past three.

Nottingham Forest had a bid accepted at £25m on deadline day in September 2023, when Chalobah was first put on the market, but the player ultimately rejected the move.

Chalobah was up for sale again in the January 2024 window, but no-one met the £25m asking price, despite reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

The England Under-21 international then battled his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s first team and was the starting centre-back at the end of the 2023-24 season – only to be made available for sale again this summer, with Pochettino sacked.

Again no substantial, permanent offer came and he joined Palace on loan minutes before the summer transfer window closed.

Glasner was told hours before Palace beat Stockport in the FA Cup third round that a “contractual issue” meant he could not play Chalobah, leaving his squad a man short.

On 13 January he told media that Chalobah “wants to stay” – a claim corroborated by BBC Sport from several sources close to the player.

However, a phone call on 14 January from sporting director Paul Winstanley convinced Chalobah that a return to play at Stamford Bridge would be productive, with a prominent role to be expected in the coming weeks.

That conversation followed an earlier, unplanned meeting with Winstanley, his co-sporting director Laurence Stewart and co-owner Behdad Eghbali at Selhurst Park after the 1-1 draw between Palace and Chelsea earlier this month.

Chalobah had walked into the away dressing room after the match to speak with friend Reece James and ended up talking to the three executives.

Palace haven’t criticised Chelsea and accept the terms of the initial agreement made on deadline day in the summer.

Trevoh Chalobah: From Chelsea’s ‘bomb squad’ to emergency recall

Trevoh Chalobah’s journey at Chelsea has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. The 22-year-old defender was once considered surplus to requirements and was even banished to the club’s infamous ‘bomb squad’ – a group of players deemed surplus to requirements and forced to train away from the first team.

However, Chalobah has turned his fortunes around in remarkable fashion. After impressing on loan at French side Lorient last season, the young defender was recalled to Chelsea in January due to a defensive crisis at the club.

Since his return, Chalobah has been a revelation. He has put in a series of solid performances at the heart of Chelsea’s defense, showcasing his composure on the ball, aerial prowess, and defensive nous. His standout performance came in Chelsea’s crucial Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid, where he put in a commanding display to help his side secure a vital victory.

Chalobah’s rise from the ‘bomb squad’ to becoming an integral part of Chelsea’s first team is a testament to his character, determination, and talent. His emergence as a key player for the Blues has been a pleasant surprise for many Chelsea fans, who are now eagerly anticipating what the future holds for this promising young defender.

  • Why Sanchez, Jackson and Gusto were dropped for Chelsea’s clash vs Ipswich

Why Sanchez, Jackson and Gusto were dropped for Chelsea’s clash vs Ipswich

Enzo Maresca dropped several Chelsea first team players for the Blues’ Premier League clash against Ipswich Town on Monday night.

Chelsea fell to defeat at home to Fulham last time out, with Sanchez taking heavy criticism for his role in the Cottagers’ late winner.

The Spaniard opted to go long in the dying minutes of the game, with his clearance intercepted by Fulham before they launched a counter-attack and Rodrigo Muniz scored a winner.

Elsewhere, Malo Gusto has been the preferred option at right-back for Chelsea in Reece James’ absence, but dropped to the bench as Axel Disasi was handed a chance in the Premier League.

Despite Nicolas Jackson’s fine form in attack, Christopher Nkunku was handed an opportunity to impress against the struggling Tractor Boys after being the only used substitute against Fulham, with Joao Felix also returning the the starting XI in place of Jadon Sancho.

Speaking as Chelsea prepared to face Ipswich, Maresca revealed why he opted to make the changes that he did.

Enzo Maresca has explained the reason behind the changes.

Enzo Maresca has explained the reason behind the changes. / IMAGO / Crystal Pix

“It gives opportunities to players,” Maresca told Chelsea’s official website.

“We have had many games in December, it’s a busy period and we just want the team to stay fresh. For the players coming into the team tonight, it’s a chance for them.

“For Noni, Joao, Christo it represents a chance. They have maybe played more minutes in the Conference League than the Premier League but the season is long.

“We are going to need them throughout the season. Tonight is a good chance for them.”

Maresca previously revealed what it would take for Sanchez to be dropped as Chelsea’s first choice goalkeeper, but it appears that the Italian is using the game against Ipswich as a chance to rotate.

“The moment he stops doing that (trying to play out from the back), he is not going to play,” he said.

It remains to be seen as to whether the Spaniard will return in goal for Chelsea’s next match, with Jorgensen knowing that he has a golden opportunity to put pressure on his fellow shot-stopper with a good performance.

Chelsea will be hoping to return to winning ways at Portman Road, with Maresca’s side looking to finish 2025 second in the Premier League as they continue to challenge for the top four this season.

In a surprising move, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has decided to drop Alexis Sanchez, Reece James, and Kai Havertz from the starting lineup for their clash against Ipswich. This decision has raised eyebrows among fans and pundits alike, as all three players have been key contributors to the team’s success this season.

Sanchez, who has been in fine form recently, scoring crucial goals and providing creative spark in the attack, has been replaced by Romelu Lukaku up front. This decision comes as a shock to many, as Sanchez’s partnership with Lukaku has been instrumental in Chelsea’s recent victories.

Reece James, who has been solid at the back and impressive going forward, has been replaced by Cesar Azpilicueta in the right-back position. This move is particularly surprising given James’ consistent performances this season.

Lastly, Kai Havertz, who has been a versatile and dynamic presence in Chelsea’s midfield, has been dropped in favor of Jorginho. This decision has left many wondering why Tuchel has opted for a more defensive-minded lineup against Ipswich.

While Tuchel’s decisions may be puzzling, it’s clear that he has a specific game plan in mind for this match. Only time will tell if his choices will pay off and lead Chelsea to victory against Ipswich. Stay tuned for updates on how these changes impact the game.
