  • Chicago Cubs Reportedly Signing Infielder Nicky Lopez

When the Cubs let Luis Vazquez go last week, I wondered if they would try to replace him at Triple-A with a veteran defensive-first middle-infielder, just to have a little extra depth. Sure enough, they are: per Jon Heyman and Jesse Rogers, the Cubs are signing former White Sox infielder Nicky Lopez to a minor league deal.

Outside of one monster (BABIP-fueled) season, Lopez is a glove-only, plus-defensive depth type:

Lopez, 29, can play anywhere on the infield, and historically has been very good at all spots (outside of a very down year by DRS at shortstop last year). He is the type of guy you are very happy to have at Triple-A juuuuuuust in case, but who you probably don’t want to guarantee a bench job at this point.

I suspect Lopez will have a chance to win a bench job in Spring Training, mind you, and he may have an opt-out in his deal if he doesn’t win that job. Ideally, though, he starts the season at Iowa, and is there in case of a serious injury issue. He wouldn’t necessarily kill you as a starter if necessary, but his good defensive value wouldn’t entirely make up for the 20+% below-average bat. And on a team that has Dansby Swanson at shortstop and Nico Hoerner at second base, it’s not like you’d need to keep Lopez on the bench as a late-inning defensive replacement.

That is all to say, you can expect Lopez to just be a depth guy at this point. But he’ll be there in Spring Training, competing alongside Gage Workman, Vidal Brujan, and Jon Berti to be the primary guy at third base if/when Matt Shaw isn’t quite ready.

According to multiple sources, the Chicago Cubs are set to sign infielder Nicky Lopez to a contract. Lopez, who most recently played for the Kansas City Royals, is known for his strong defensive skills and contact hitting ability.

The addition of Lopez to the Cubs’ roster is expected to bolster their infield depth and provide a steady presence in the middle infield. With his versatility to play both second base and shortstop, Lopez could potentially fill in at multiple positions and provide valuable defensive support.

While the details of the contract have not been officially announced yet, Lopez’s signing is seen as a promising move for the Cubs as they look to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for more updates as the deal is finalized and Lopez officially joins the Chicago Cubs organization.

  • Cast members of ‘Groundhog Day’ reunite for Chicago celebration – NBC Chicago

In Chicago, Groundhog Day doesn’t just come with a spring prediction from Woodstock Willie or Chicago Harry — it also comes with the honoring of a famous movie, over, and over, and over again.

You may have heard of it: the cult classic movie 1993 Groundhog Day, directed by Chicago native Harold Ramis, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, was filmed in none other than the suburb of Woodstock, Illinois.

Sunday, on Groundhog Day itself, Harry Caray’s Tavern at Navy Pier will honor the movie and late director, with the “2nd annual Harold Ramis Day” and a celebration of the film through themed movie food, movie memorabilia, actor appearances and of course, a groundhog.

Every February, a furry animal tells Americans how long winter will last, but do you know why? NBC Chicago meteorologist Kevin Jeanes explains.

“Harry Caray’s Tavern will transform into a fully immersive Groundhog Day experience, featuring food and beverages inspired by Groundhog Day’s Tip Top Café.” a release said. “Several artifacts from Harold’s storied career will be on display, including the Armani coat Bill Murray wore in Groundhog Day, the jumpsuits worn by Harold Ramis and Bill Murray in Ghostbusters, and several of Harold’s leather-bound shooting scripts, including Groundhog Day.”

The celebration begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, organizers said, when fan-favorite film character “Ned Ryerson,” played by Stephen Tobolowsky will lead a special Groundhog Day ceremony, during which Chicago Harry — a live groundhog — will emerge from his tree stump to reveal what the forecast holds.

Upon his emergence, everyone will wait with bated breath to see if Chicago Harry sees his shadow. If he does, legend has it there will be six more weeks of winter. But if not, spring comes early.

“He put up a little bit of a fight last year,” said well see if he’s feeling frisky this year,” Danielle Borisy director of marketing at Harry Caray’s told NBC Chicago.

Other special guests from the movie set to attend the event are Peggy Roeder, who plays the piano teacher, and Richard Henzel, who plays the DJ.

More information about the Sunday event can be found here.

The beloved cast members of the iconic movie ‘Groundhog Day’ reunited for a special celebration in Chicago over the weekend. The event was held in honor of the film’s 25th anniversary and brought together stars such as Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, and Chris Elliott.

Fans were thrilled to see the cast members together again, reminiscing about the making of the classic comedy and sharing behind-the-scenes stories. The event also featured a screening of the movie, followed by a Q&A session with the cast.

The reunion was a nostalgic trip down memory lane for both the cast and fans, who continue to cherish ‘Groundhog Day’ as a timeless classic. The film, which follows a weatherman who finds himself stuck in a time loop, has remained a favorite among audiences since its release in 1993.

Overall, the Chicago celebration was a heartwarming gathering that reminded everyone of the enduring magic of ‘Groundhog Day’ and the talented actors who brought it to life.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Maurice Alexander (1) runs after makes a catch against Pittsburgh Steelers during the second half of a preseason game at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Maurice Alexander (1) runs after makes a catch against Pittsburgh Steelers during the second half of a preseason game at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Wide receiver Maurice Alexander signed a reserve/futures contract with the Chicago Bears, per a report from Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston.

Alexander will join new Bears head coach and former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as well as Antwaan Randle El, who coached wide receivers in Detroit and will do the same while also adding the title of assistant head coach in Chicago. Alexander spent three seasons with the Lions.

Alexander was on the practice squad for the Lions at the end of the season but was not signed to a futures deal by the team, allowing him to sign such a deal elsewhere, even before free agency officially started. He appeared in three games on special teams this season for the Lions, including filling in for an injured Kalif Raymond as a kick and punt returner.

This article originally appeared on Lions Wire: Wide receiver Maurice Alexander follows Ben Johnson, Antwaan Randle El to Chicago

After losing two key wide receivers in free agency, the Chicago Bears have quickly found a replacement in Maurice Alexander. The former standout receiver has agreed to a deal with the Bears, joining former teammates Ben Johnson and Antwaan Randle El in Chicago.

Alexander, known for his speed and playmaking ability, will provide a much-needed boost to the Bears’ receiving corps. With Johnson and Randle El already in the fold, the trio of receivers gives Chicago a formidable group of pass catchers for quarterback Justin Fields to target.

Fans are excited to see what this new trio can do on the field and are hopeful that Alexander can help lead the Bears to success in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on the Bears’ offseason moves and how Alexander fits into the team’s plans. #ChicagoBears #MauriceAlexander #NFLFreeAgency

  • Former Lions WR Maurice Alexander follows Ben Johnson to Chicago Bears

Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Maurice Alexander has signed a futures deal with the Chicago Bears, according to NFL’s transaction wire. Maurice will reunite with former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who became the Bears head coach last week. He’ll also reconnect with his position coach, as Antwaan Randle El also went to Chicago for a promotion to wide receivers coach/assistant head coach.

Alexander finished the season on the Lions practice squad, and the Lions opted not to sign him to a futures deal. That meant Alexander was a free agent free to sign with any team, even before free agency opens in March.

Alexander, 28, has been on and off the Lions’ roster since 2022. This past year, he made three game appearances, serving as the team’s kick and punt returner when Kalif Raymond spent over a month on injured reserve with a foot injury. Alexander got a total of four punt returns and turned it into 42 yards and a fumble (that was not lost).

Nicknamed “Hard Time,” Alexander may not have gotten many opportunities on the field in his three seasons (seven game appearances), but he had earned a reputation as a hard worker and good teammate. He was one of the many players who Teddy Bridgewater worked out with in and out of the Lions’ training facility.

“He’s been back there just listening. After practice, catching jugs. Walk through, catching jugs, just listening,” Raymond said of Alexander in 2022. “And then as I’m working, he’s working. And a lot people don’t know his story. This dude’s working another job, got a call from the USFL, balls out for the USFL, becomes a Detroit Lion and then finally takes a punt back in the NFL. There’s a lot of work that went in between that moment—the moment had in that game, and a lot of work that went in between that nobody saw. And that dude works his tail off.”

You can see the list of other Lions free agents right here.

Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Maurice Alexander has signed with the Chicago Bears, reuniting with his former coach Ben Johnson. Johnson, who was previously the Lions’ wide receivers coach, recently joined the Bears as their new offensive coordinator.

Alexander, known for his speed and route-running ability, will bring a valuable skill set to the Bears’ receiving corps. With Johnson’s familiarity with Alexander’s playing style and strengths, the duo is set to make a significant impact in Chicago.

Fans are excited to see Alexander’s potential unleashed under Johnson’s guidance, and are hopeful for a successful partnership between the two in the Windy City. Stay tuned for updates on their progress as they gear up for the upcoming season with the Bears. #ChicagoBears #MauriceAlexander #BenJohnson #NFLFreeAgency

  • Chicago Blackhawks vs Florida Panthers Prediction, Odds and Picks

The Florida Panthers will be hosting the second-worst team in the NHL, the Chicago Blackhawks, on Saturday for an afternoon matinee affair. This is a very lop-sided matchup to say the least. The defending Stanley Cup Champion Panthers are better than the Blackhawks in every aspect of the game. They average 3.19 goals for per game, compared to the 2.61 average of the Blackhawks, and on the defensive side of things they are limiting opponents to 2.92 goals per game while the Blackhawks allow 3.39 goals per game. The Panthers have been playing well as of late, they are 5-2 in their last seven games and they have had some large offensive outputs in some of those victories. In one previous game against the Blackhawks this season, the Panthers actually lost by a score of 3-1. They will be seeking revenge in this game.

Outside of phenom Connor Bedard, the Blackhawks do not have any elite offensive talent that can keep up with the likes of Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk. The solid defensive play of the Panthers should be more than enough to keep Bedard at bay and take advantage of the rest of the Blackhawks lineup. There is no reason to overthink this game, the Panthers should win this with ease. I will be taking them on the puck line.

Blackhawks vs Panthers prediction: Florida -1.5 (-140) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.

The Chicago Blackhawks will face off against the Florida Panthers in an exciting matchup on Friday night. Both teams are coming off of strong performances and will be looking to secure a win in this game.

The Blackhawks have been playing well as of late, with key players like Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat leading the way. They have been scoring goals at a high rate and will look to continue that trend against the Panthers.

On the other hand, the Panthers have been one of the top teams in the league this season, with their high-powered offense led by Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau. They will be looking to maintain their position at the top of the standings with a win against the Blackhawks.

In terms of odds, the Panthers are currently favored to win this game. However, the Blackhawks have shown that they can compete with top teams and should not be counted out.

In terms of picks, this game is shaping up to be a close one. Both teams have the offensive firepower to score goals, so we can expect a high-scoring affair. Ultimately, I predict that the Panthers will come out on top in a closely contested game.

    Prediction: Florida Panthers win

Odds: Florida Panthers -150, Chicago Blackhawks +130

    Picks: Florida Panthers -150

  • New tax season changes you should know about – NBC Chicago

Tax season officially started Monday, and while there are still months to go before the April 15 filing deadline, experts say there are some things to watch for as you prepare.

NBC 5 Responds spoke to experts about what’s new this tax season- and to get some reminders about how to avoid having your refund stolen.

From new state tax credits to free ways to file- there’s a lot to know about this tax season.

    FEDERAL DEDUCTIONS INCREASE

“On the federal side … the standard deduction is going to increase across the board for all filing status, which means that the IRS is going to tax you less on your income that you’re earning,” said Susana Ramirez, with Ladder Up, an organization that offers free tax preparation services for thousands of low-income households in Illinois.

For single taxpayers, or married couples filing separately, the standard deduction is now  $14,600. For married couples filing jointly, it’s been boosted to $29,200. That’s an increase of $1,500 from 2023.

    NEW ILLINOIS TAX CREDITS

Illinois taxpayers who qualify will also have access to two new state credits implemented this year.

Those who made under $66,819 dollars qualify for the earned income tax credit. And those who qualify for the Illinois earned income credit can also apply for the new state child tax credit, if they have a child under the age of 12.

“It’s going to give you a little boost on your refund and if you have children and might boost it even more,” said Ramirez.

And remember that third round of economic impact payments from the pandemic? There is still time to claim that money, if you haven’t received it.

“So that third round of the $1,400 is actually going to be expiring soon. So a lot of people who didn’t receive it during COVID or afterwards will need to file a tax return in order to claim that as a credit and receive it as a refund,” Ramirez said.

    SCAM WARNINGS

Now that you have an idea of what your refund may look like, it’s important to protect it. Steve Bernas with the Better Business Bureau warns taxpayers should be careful who they choose to do their taxes.

“Nobody can promise you could do better than somebody else. It’s all done. It should be done the same way regardless of doing it. So somebody’s promising more than others be very careful,” Bernas said.

Bernas also warned taxpayers to stay away from tax prep businesses that seem to appear overnight.

“All of a sudden the gas station turns into a tax place and they have a big Uncle Sam out front. You’ve got to do the research on those organizations and who they are and will they be around the day after taxes are due. A lot of times they’re not. They close up and they’re gone. So who’s going to represent you if something’s wrong with the filing as well?” Bernas said, adding that people should make sure the person who completes their tax forms also signs them and provides their contact information for any future follow up.

Both Bernas and Ramirez urged taxpayers to file their returns as quickly as possible.

“A lot of times people find out when they go do their own taxes and say somebody else filed in your name. It’s part of the whole, you know, identity theft problem, the issue that’s out there, still the fastest growing white collar crime out there,” said Bernas.

“Unfortunately, it is a very long process to try to resolve [fraudulent tax returns]. But it’s always good to try to file early and making sure that your information is verified,” said Ramirez.

NEW, FREE IRS TAX FILING PROGRAM

Finally some good news: this year more than two million illinois taxpayers will be able to file their federal and state taxes for free. Illinois is now one of 25 states participating in the Direct File program, which allows most taxpayers to file both state and federal taxes directly with the IRS at no cost.

To make sure no one else files your tax return- you can request a six digit pin number from the IRS. That will prevent someone else from using your social security number to file taxes.

Once you file your taxes, the IRS says, most refunds will be available within 21 days.

To check the status of your refund you will need the following personal information:

Once you have that information, you can start your verification request in the “Where’s My Refund” tool here.

You can start checking the status of your refund within:

    • 24 hours after electronically filing a 2024 tax return
    • 3 or 4 days after electronically filing a 2023 return
    • 4 weeks after mailing the return

As tax season approaches, it’s important to stay informed about any changes that may affect your filing process. From updates to deductions and credits to new regulations, there are several key changes to be aware of this year. Here are some of the top tax season changes you should know about:

    1. Recovery Rebate Credit: If you did not receive the full amount of the stimulus payments that you were eligible for in 2020, you may be able to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return.

    2. Child Tax Credit: The Child Tax Credit has been expanded for the 2021 tax year, allowing eligible families to receive up to $3,600 per child under the age of 6 and $3,000 per child ages 6-17.

    3. Earned Income Tax Credit: The maximum amount of the Earned Income Tax Credit has increased for the 2021 tax year, providing additional relief for low to moderate-income individuals and families.

    4. Unemployment Benefits: If you received unemployment benefits in 2021, up to $10,200 of those benefits may be tax-free for individuals with an adjusted gross income of less than $150,000.

    5. Standard Deduction: The standard deduction for 2021 has increased to $12,550 for single filers and $25,100 for married couples filing jointly.

It’s important to stay up to date on these changes and consult with a tax professional if you have any questions or concerns. By being informed and proactive, you can ensure a smooth and successful tax filing season.
