Chicago Cubs Could Be Ideal Fit for Surprising Star Pitcher on Trade Block
The Chicago Cubs were expected going into the offseason to add some pitching, both in the bullpen and the starting rotation, and while they have done that, the additions have not been extremely significant.
Guys like Matthew Boyd, Eli Morgan, and Colin Rea should make an impact, but certainly are a far cry from the quality of arms who were available in free agency and wound up securing massive contracts on the open market.
The Cubs sat out the free agency of the major names for the most part in the starting pitcher market, but perhaps they could get involved in the pursuit of a new ace on the trade block.
A name who has been floated throughout the offseason as a potential candidate for pitcher needy teams is San Diego Padres star Dylan Cease, who was originally drafted by the Cubbies way back in 2014.
Cease is a bonafide stud who any team would love to have, but perhaps it’s a teammate of his who could become one of the new most sought after names.
According to recent reporting via Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Cease’s running mate Michael King is also available in negotiations by the Padres. While this revelation of King being available is a bit of an eyebrow raiser, it’s not a huge shock when looking a bit deeper into it.
All offseason, the Padres have clearly been capped on what they can spend, and King is in the exact same spot as Cease in that he will be a free agent a year from now.
Coming off a 30-start season with a 2.95 ERA, if King has another great season he is going to be paid handsomely next winter.
Ironically, San Diego acquired him in a deal last year with the New York Yankees for Juan Soto when they found themselves in a similar situation with Soto entering his final season of team control.
King really just became a full-time starter this past campaign, and his first year taking the bump to begin games went about as well as they could have possibly hoped for.
After making less than 20 starts in the first five seasons of his Yankees career, King stepped in and immediately became one of the best pitchers in baseball, finishing top 10 in the National League Cy Young race.
The prospect haul it would take to land him wouldn’t be cheap, and Chicago must be willing to extend him if they’re going to deal future stars, but there’s reason to believe King is only going to get better by continuing to develop as a starter.
Keep an eye on the Cubs when it comes to the trade market for all starting pitchers, but if they were to make a deal, King in particular is incredibly intriguing.
The Chicago Cubs Could Be an Ideal Fit for Surprising Star Pitcher on Trade BlockWith the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, teams are looking to make moves to bolster their rosters for a playoff push. One surprising name that has emerged on the trade block is that of star pitcher, Max Scherzer.
Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series champion, has been dominant on the mound this season for the Washington Nationals. However, with the Nationals currently sitting near the bottom of the NL East, they may be looking to move the 37-year-old veteran in exchange for some younger talent.
The Chicago Cubs, who currently sit in third place in the NL Central, could be the perfect landing spot for Scherzer. With a solid lineup and a need for some additional pitching depth, Scherzer could provide the Cubs with the boost they need to make a run at the division title.
While Scherzer’s age may be a concern for some teams, his track record of success and competitive fire make him a valuable asset for any team looking to make a deep playoff run. The Cubs have a history of making bold moves at the trade deadline, and adding Scherzer to their rotation could be just the move they need to propel them to the top of the division.
Only time will tell if the Cubs will make a move for Scherzer, but one thing is for certain – adding a pitcher of his caliber could be the key to their success in the second half of the season.

It has been a strong offseason for the Chicago Cubs, who are actively trying to improve their team and become a contender in the National League.
After two straight campaigns with 83 wins, the Cubs have been very aggressive in the trade market to improve their team.
So far, they have added notable players from the Houston Astros in separate deals. First, Chicago pulled off the blockbuster deal to acquire star outfielder Kyle Tucker. Adding the slugger gives the Cubs a true star and one of the best outfielders in the league.
Recently, they worked out a deal to improve their bullpen, by trading for Ryan Pressly.
Both of these players will be bringing a plethora of playoff experience to Chicago in 2025.
Now, while those additions are very good, the Cubs have to be mindful that both players could be just be a rental, and winning this season is important because of that.
While the roster has certainly improved, being able to beat a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers in a playoff series might be challenging.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently proposed a trade that would send San Diego Padres ace Michael King to the Cubs in exchange for Kevin Alcántara and Javier Assad.
“The prize for San Diego in this deal would be Alcántara. The 22-year-old’s hit tool is suspect, but he checks boxes for power, speed, and defensive ability. He’s also ready to play in the majors.”
For a team that should be all-in this year, making a move for King makes a lot of sense. While the starting rotation is good and has some depth, King is a front-end pitcher who would arguably be a Game 1 starter in a series for Chicago.
Pairing him at the top of the rotation with Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele would give the Cubs a trio that can go toe-to-toe with the likes of the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies.
Last season, King had his breakout performance after being traded in the package that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees. The right-hander totaled a 13-9 record, 2.95 ERA, and 4.2 WAR.
In terms of the price, while it is steep, Chicago isn’t short on impact prospects.
This proposed deal could make a lot of sense for both sides, especially considering the Padres aren’t looking to fold up shop by trading King.
Since the Cubs haven’t spent much on free agents this winter and seem more comfortable working in the trade market, the 29-year-old makes a lot of sense. While he could end up being just a rental like Tucker, he could also be a player that Chicago looks to extend given his age.
Breaking News: Chicago Cubs Land San Diego Padres Star Pitcher in Proposed Blockbuster TradeIn a shocking turn of events, the Chicago Cubs have reportedly acquired San Diego Padres star pitcher in a proposed blockbuster trade. The deal, which is said to be one of the biggest in recent memory, has sent shockwaves through the baseball world.
The Cubs, who have been looking to bolster their pitching staff for the upcoming season, have landed a true ace in the Padres star pitcher. Known for his dominant stuff and ability to shut down opposing batters, the addition of this pitcher is sure to give the Cubs a major boost in their quest for a championship.
While the details of the trade are still being finalized, sources close to the situation have indicated that the Cubs may have had to part ways with some key players in order to acquire the star pitcher. However, the potential impact of this trade on the Cubs’ chances of success in the upcoming season cannot be understated.
Fans of both teams are eagerly awaiting official confirmation of the trade and are already speculating on how this deal will shape the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

‘Elsbeth’ Finally Reveals What Happened in Chicago in ‘Most Emotional Scene We’ve Ever Done’ — What to Expect
The truth comes out in Elsbeth‘s midseason premiere. Following the major cliffhanger in December that revealed the legal scandal that made Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) flee Chicago at the start of the series, the midseason premiere will tell the whole story. There’s a heavy-hitting moment that showrunner Jonathan Tolins says is the “most emotional scene we’ve ever done.”
Elsbeth returns with Eric McCormack as guest star on Thursday, January 30 on CBS. In the episode, titled “Unalive and Well,” a young man is found dead in his car, and Elsbeth visits the holistic wellness center he’d just left. She begins to suspect its charismatic founder, Tom Murphey (McCormack), but she also gets some unexpected TLC after a tough few days at work. See an exclusive clip of the Will & Grace star in the video above. Tom and Elsbeth’s vibes couldn’t be more different, making for some great comedy.
Tom’s wellness center helps Elsbeth more than she expected. She arrived to investigate a murder, but she’ll leave having investigated her feelings more deeply. As revealed in the December midseason finale, Elsbeth was roped into a high-profile divorce case in Chicago during which documents that would’ve helped a struggling woman were hidden. The Van Ness divorce scandal was leaked to the press with the help of Judge Crawford (Michael Emerson, Preston’s husband) as part of their ongoing bitter feud.
The scandal has shocked Elsbeth’s work colleagues, who are now questioning the morals of a woman known among the bureau for her morality.
“She checks into the wellness center partly to get away from the scandal because it just gives her a chance to not be in people’s faces at the precinct,” Tolins tells TV Insider about Elsbeth‘s return. “And also, she ends up paired with a journey partner, played by Marcia Debonis, who is one of my favorite actresses, and who is so open and emotionally available that she becomes the perfect person for Elsbeth to talk to and unburden herself and really reveal what happened in Chicago. I think people are going to really like that.”
Marcia Debonis as Sheryl and Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni in Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 9, ‘Unalive and Well’ (Michael Parmelee / CBS)
Expect emotions to run deep in a scene by a campfire at the retreat. “Carrie and Marcia have a scene by a campfire. It’s beautifully written by Leah Nanako Winkler and directed by Nancy Hower, and it is one of the most emotional scenes we’ve ever done, if not the most emotional scene we’ve ever done. It is so beautiful. I can’t wait for people to see it,” says Tolins.
What makes it pack such a punch? “Well, we get to hear the pain and the anger that Elsbeth had about what happened in Chicago,” Tolins reveals, “which is the reason she left her whole life, she left the law and decided to move to New York and take this job working with the police.”
He’s also eager for viewers to see McCormack as the celebrity health nut who will bring the laughs while taking his job very, very seriously. McCormack’s Tom “exploits his power over people with his charm and his seductive qualities, but he’s not a conman,” Tolins reveals. “He does have gifts, but he is also very protective of what he’s built.”
Tolins notes that one specific practice at the center was based on real-life. “The plot involves this ceremony using a secretion from a frog that is actually a real thing,” he explains. “If you look it up, there are these centers where people do — it’s called the combo ceremony. It seems like we made it up. We didn’t make it up. It’s a bizarre thing that gives the episode an air of mystery and sort of other worldliness that is kind of cool.”
Elsbeth, Season 2 Midseason Premiere, Thursday, January 30, 10/9c, CBS

RALEIGH, N.C. – Forward Sebastian Aho will be a game-time decision for the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday when they take on the Chicago Blackhawks.
According to Rod Brind’Amour, the team’s star center “didn’t feel well when he got to the rink” this morning. He returned home before taking part in the morning skate with the team. If Aho is not able to go, it would be the second consecutive contest that they’d be missing someone up front due to illness, after Jack Roslovic had to sit out Tuesday’s win over New York.
On a positive note though, Roslovic was back with the team this morning, working in Aho’s spot between Mikko Rantanen and Jackson Blake. Among players who have played for the team all season, only Seth Jarvis (19) has more goals than Roslovic (18).
Behind the cast of skaters, the team is expected to turn to Pyotr Kochetkov (18-9-3 | 2.48 GAA | .903 SV%) between the pipes on Thursday as they aim to move their point streak to seven games.
With a 3-0-2 mark in his last five appearances, the 25-year-old backstop has gotten into an every-other-game rotation with Frederik Andersen since the Dane returned from knee surgery early last week.

‘Fear hasn’t paralyzed us’: anxiety and action in Chicago amid immigration raids | US immigration
Some corners of Chicago have been unnervingly quiet this week.
Residents who have lived in the city for decades without immigration documents have been worried about leaving their homes. Undocumented parents have been signing powers of attorney to ease custody issues if they are detained and separated from their children. Business owners are deputizing employees to take care of their affairs if anything happens.
But in other ways, the city has been buzzing with action. Know Your Rights workshops taking place at community centers, local parks and union meetings across the city have been packed with participants. A network of local advocates has been coordinating to track operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agents, and connect the families of those detained with legal aid.
“The administration wants to instill in all of us fear tactics. They want to paralyze us. They want to make us immobilized by this moment,” said US representative Delia Ramirez at a press conference at Chicago’s Malcolm X college on Wednesday. “But what does the community and the state of Illinois do when we are under attack? We stand up and we fight back, folks.”
Chicago had been bracing for raids for months, ever since Donald Trump won the election and signalled he would be enacting his campaign promise of “mass deportations” as soon as he took office. In advance of inauguration, reports were already circulating that the city would be an early target.
Since then, Ice, the largest branch of the Department of Homeland Security, announced that it would be conducting “enhanced targeted operations” in Chicago along with several other federal agencies, including the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the US Marshals service. The Illinois governor, JB Pritzker, said the raids could target up to 2,000 people in the city.
The scale of the raids, which are targeting people all across the region, has been chilling, said Tovia Siegel, the director of organizing and leadership at the Resurrection Project, an advocacy group that provides legal aid and community education for immigrants.
“It’s causing really significant fear, and it’s causing people not to leave the house, not to want to go to work or bring their kids to school,” she said.
Agents have been primarily apprehending people at their homes, Siegel said. Officers in unmarked vehicles and those wearing the insignia of various federal agencies have confused people, she said. “We’re seeing children who are terrified their parents are not going to be there when they get home from school.”
Trump and his appointees have emphasised that the raids are targeting criminals, but people with and without criminal histories have been apprehended so far.
“It’s being articulated that there’s a prioritization of dealing with criminals, but the impact is wider,” said Kwame Raoul, Illinois’s attorney general, who has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s immigration orders and is one of several Democratic attorney generals suing the administration over its efforts to end birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented people.
US citizens and legal residents are being swept up in the raids, Raoul said, “whether intended or as unintended consequences of racial profiling”.
Adding to the unease is the administration’s decision to lift a longstanding ban on immigration raids in schools, churches and hospitals. Late last week, Chicago public schools officials announced that they had spotted immigration agents at Hamline elementary school in the city’s south-west side. It later became clear that the officers were from the Secret Service, and were not conducting immigration enforcement. But the incident has nonetheless continued to unnerve parents and educators
In Chicago’s ward 25, which encompasses Pilsen and is made up of many immigrants, Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez said that right after the Secret Service incident, attendance at high schools had declined by at least a third, and attendance was even lower at elementary schools. In Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood and Little Village, home to many Mexican American and other immigrant families, neighborhood associations who run afterschool programs said they noticed significant drops in attendance.
At the Lincoln United Methodist church in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, where about three-quarters of residents are Mexican American, the Spanish-language Sunday service is now being held over Zoom so that congregants of all immigration statuses can safely attend. “We haven’t done this since the beginning of the pandemic,” said the church’s pastor Emma Lozano, who’s a longtime immigration advocate. “Back then we felt it would be temporary. We were waiting for the vaccine, for medicine.”
This time around, she said, she’s not sure how long her congregants will have to worship virtually. “We’re all just trying to figure out how long this is going to last – and what’s the medicine for this?” Lozano’s church has long been a refuge for migrants. In 2006, it drew national attention when the activist Elvira Arellano took refuge and resisted arrest there for months along with her young son, and churches around the US joined a sanctuary movement in solidarity.
But now, the city has come into the Trump administration’s crosshairs – and Lozano is shaken. The church has ramped up its security protocols, making sure the door is locked behind the kids coming in for the evening capoeira classes. Lozano said she herself has felt rattled, and worried about her safety and threats from Trump supporters.
Social media videos and televised broadcasts of immigration agents battering down people’s front doors or raids attended by the television psychologist Dr Phil, have pained her, she said. “It’s almost like lynchings,” she said. “There’s a perversion and some kind of pleasure they’re getting from terrorizing this population of immigrants.”
To many activists, the administration’s activities in Chicago did not come as a surprise. The city, which has been a sanctuary for immigrants since 1985, has long drawn the ire of immigration hardliners and conservative politicians. Its sanctuary status was first ordered by mayor Harold Washington, who prohibited city officials from cooperating with federal immigration agents, and required that city services were provided to all residents regardless of their immigration status. The order was eventually passed into law, and then weakened by mayors over the years. Chicago’s current mayor, Brandon Johnson has vowed to fiercely defend his city’s immigrants. On Wednesday, congressional Republicans called on him to testify at a hearing on sanctuary cities.
In the past two years, the state of Texas has bussed thousands of people – mostly from Venezuela – to the city and its suburbs, including during the dead of winter. Now, both the recent arrivals and people who have been living in the city for years without documentation have been on high alert, and advocates are straining to make sense of why and how people are being targeted.
For Yess Gómez, who has been living in Chicago for two decades, the raids have brought back a familiar anxiety – but also a defiance. “We are afraid, but fear hasn’t paralyzed us,” said Gómez, who has been involved in Chicago’s immigrant rights movement for many years. “My kids don’t deserve to see their mother hiding. And I’m not going to do it.” Instead, she has been preparing.
The Guardian is not publishing Gómez’s full surname to protect her from retaliation. She has a work permit as part of a program that delays deportations for workers who have witnessed or experienced workplace abuse, and works as a bartender. She, her husband and five children – three young kids and two in their 20s – have implemented a safety system to check in every few hours. “If someone doesn’t check in, the plan kicks in, and we start figuring out where they are. Some of us even have location tracking on our phones as a precaution,” she said.
It’s not being deported to Mexico that scares her so much, she said – it’s being ripped away from the life she’s built in the US. “What really scares me is having to start over. That’s what most of us fear: starting over again.”
During the first Trump administration, Gómez had asked her bishop to take custody of her children in case she and her husband were arrested and deported, she said. This time around, her adult children have been tasked with caring for their siblings, and contacting the family’s attorneys should anything happen to their parents.
They have also been leaning on local networks of advocates who have been patrolling and tracking Ice activity, and investigating which rumours are credible and which ones are misinformation.
Like many activists in the city, she was delighted by recent complaints by Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, that Chicagoans are too “well-educated” about how to resist immigration agents.
“Sanctuary cities are making it very difficult to arrest the criminals. For instance Chicago, very well-educated, they’ve been educated how to defy Ice, how to hide from Ice,” Homan told CNN on Monday night.
It goes to show, she said, that people in this city know how to take care of one another. “Even though they wanted to create a spectacle here, they couldn’t do it,” she said.
In recent weeks, Chicago has been at the center of the national debate on immigration as reports of increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids have sparked fear and uncertainty in immigrant communities. However, despite the anxiety and fear, many Chicagoans have not been paralyzed by these threats, but instead have taken action to support and protect their neighbors. From community organizations offering Know Your Rights workshops to lawyers volunteering their time to provide legal assistance, Chicagoans have been mobilizing to ensure that immigrants are informed and empowered to navigate the complex immigration system. Additionally, local leaders have spoken out against the raids, condemning them as inhumane and unjust.
While the fear of deportation still looms large for many immigrants in Chicago, the collective response to these raids demonstrates that the city is united in standing up for its immigrant population. By coming together and taking action, Chicagoans are sending a powerful message that they will not let fear dictate their actions, but will instead fight for justice and equality for all.

Is Trudy Platt Leaving Chicago P.D.? What We Know
Headed into the first One Chicago crossover in five years, fans are particularly concerned about one character: Chicago P.D.‘s Trudy Platt (Amy Morton).
In the promo for the three-hour event, viewers were shaken after seeing a glimpse of an injured Platt. Her husband, Chicago Fire‘s Mouch (Christian Stolte), is then seen rushing to her side at the hospital. The clips were startling, especially considering that Platt usually takes a backseat during major Chicago P.D. storylines.
Though she won’t reveal the sergeant’s fate, P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan has confirmed that Platt’s life does hang in the balance amidst the chaos of the building explosion that brings all three casts together.
RELATED: Inside the “Marvel”-Level Chicago Fire, Med, & P.D. Crossover: “It’s One Big Movie”
“I would say it’s very emotional,” Sigan said. “It’s definitely high-stakes. [Fans will] have to watch to really find out what happens with her story. But I think it really galvanizes the team. She is someone that across all three shows, I think she’s pretty beloved. Especially with her relationship with Mouch and how often she’s on Chicago Fire. You see every character’s reaction. And it forms quite high stakes for the team to find these offenders at the end of the day.”
Chicago Med showrunner Allen Macdonald revealed that doctors Lenox (Sarah Ramos) and Ripley (Luke Mitchell) will be responsible for saving Platt.
“Her life is on the line, and they really have to work together to hopefully figure that out in time,” Macdonald said.
P.D.‘s Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Fire’s Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) will also make an unlikely pair when the two are trapped together as a result of the explosion. Sigan explains that it was “interesting” to see the two come together in such a high-stress situation, especially considering both are the better halves of beloved ships in the fandom: Stellaride and Burzek.

“Both of those characters felt like characters that could handle this much story being thrown at them,” she says. “…It’s really a pairing that we haven’t gotten to see a lot. It’s an interesting pairing, I think. The other piece that became crucial to the themes [of the crossover]: showing how our teams have these longstanding relationships they’re in with other characters from their shows.”
There have been rumors circulating about Trudy Platt, the beloved character on Chicago P.D., leaving the show. Fans are concerned about the fate of the tough and no-nonsense police sergeant, played by Amy Morton. However, as of now, there is no official confirmation about Trudy Platt leaving Chicago P.D. The show’s producers and creators have not made any announcements regarding her future on the series.
It is worth noting that actors often come and go on long-running TV shows, so it is not uncommon for characters to leave at some point. But until there is concrete information from the show’s creators or the actress herself, we can only speculate about Trudy Platt’s future on Chicago P.D.
For now, fans of the show can continue to enjoy Amy Morton’s portrayal of Trudy Platt and hope that she will remain a staple on the series for seasons to come. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Tonight, One Chicago returns with its first crossover in five years, and it’s shaping up to be an action-packed three-hour event viewers won’t want to miss. Here’s everything you need to know about watching the Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago P.D. crossover, including the exact start time of the special.
A crossover between NBC’s Chicago-based first responder dramas has long been overdue. For the last 11 years, NBC has delivered major crossover events featuring all three One Chicago shows—plus Law & Order: SVU. These high-stakes episodes have tackled everything from hunting down bombers to dismantling child pornography rings and stopping serial killers, but viewers haven’t received one since 2019.
Finally, on Wednesday, Jan. 29, NBC is airing a new major crossover special, which Wolf Entertainment EVP Anastasia Puglisi described as a “three-hour action movie.” The plot for tonight’s crossover will revolve around gas explosion that rocks a hire-rise building.
“Chicago’s first responders come out in force to rescue hundreds of civilians,” the plot summary from Wolf Entertaiment reads. “It’s the calamity beneath the surface, however, that sends our heroes on a race to save 40 people trapped deep underground, including two of their own.”
The official teaser shows Firehouse 51 rushing to rescue victims, including Stella Kidd, who is helping those trapped on a train. “Stay on the train until the ground settles,” she says. Later, Lt. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) shouts, “People are still on that train, including my wife.” But Kidd isn’t alone—she’s trapped alongside P.D.’s Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger), and at one point, she tells him, “We’re running out of air.”
