NPR sports correspondent Becky Sullivan has some tips for what to watch for in this year’s game:
A close, back-and-forth game: All signs point to a close game. The Eagles defense aims to limit big gains and force teams to beat them with small plays. But that’s exactly how the Chiefs like to win: Kansas City is 12-0 in one-score games this season. The Kansas City defense is no slouch either, and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has struggled at times when pressured.
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes: The key to the Chiefs’ three-peat hopes is their 29-year-old quarterback who is great all the time but somehow even better in high-stakes moments: in the playoffs, on 3rd and 4th downs and on game-ending drives.
The tush push: The Eagles have become known for their unusually successful take on the quarterback sneak. Here are the physics behind the play.
Eagles running back Saquon Barkley: After Philadelphia signed him last spring, Barkley has blossomed into the game-changer he always had the potential to be. He became only the ninth player ever to rush for more than 2,000 yards in the regular season, and he has more 60-plus-yard touchdown runs in one season than any player ever.
And some pre-game bonuses: Keep an eye out for Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins’ arrival outfit, and whether this Chiefs player tears up during the National Anthem.

Record-setting legal betting
A record $1.39 billion is expected to be spent on betting legally on Sunday’s Super Bowl — up from $1.25 billion in 2024, according to the American Gaming Association (AGA). One player in NFL history has already pulled off a Super Bowl three-peat: Chiefs aiming to match this legend
NEW ORLEANS — The Kansas City Chiefs will be looking to make NFL history on Super Bowl Sunday. If they can beat the Philadelphia Eagles, that will make the Chiefs the first team in league history to win three Super Bowls in a row.
Although it’s an unprecedented team feat, the three-peat has actually been accomplished before by a player. That’s right: Since the first Super Bowl was played in January 1967, there has been exactly ONE player who has managed to win three Super Bowls in a row, and that player is Ken Norton Jr.
The former NFL linebacker played in the NFL for 13 years and during the early 1990s, Norton had the wildest postseason run in league history. Here’s a look at how he did:
1992: Cowboys beat Bills in Super Bowl XXVII
1993: Cowboys beat Bills in Super Bowl XXVIII
1994: 49ers beat Chargers in Super Bowl XXIXNorton started his career in Dallas after the Cowboys selected him as a second-round pick in the 1988 NFL Draft. Although the Cowboys were terrible during his first two seasons with the team, Jimmy Johnson quickly got them turned around and they were in the Super Bowl by 1992. Not only did they trounce the Bills 52-17 in Super Bowl XXVII, but they returned the next year and beat up on Buffalo again in a 30-13 win.
Prisco’s 2025 Super Bowl pick: In Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs we trust; QB leads game-winning drive vs. Eagles
Pete Prisco
After the 1993 season, Norton moved on to San Francisco and he was right back in the big game while playing for a 49ers team that destroyed the Chargers 49-26 in Super Bowl XXIX. That’s three Super Bowl wins by an average 25 points per game, which is about as dominant as it gets.
Norton’s unbelievable run ended in 1995 when the 49ers got knocked out of the playoffs by the Green Bay Packers in a 27-17 divisional-round loss. Norton ended up playing in the NFL until retiring in 2000.
He actually ended up winning another Super Bowl ring as a member of Seattle’s coaching staff after the Seahawks won Super Bowl XLVIII with a dominant 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos. Th 58-year-old Norton also won a national championship as an assistant coach at USC in 2004.
If he’s going to add another Super Bowl ring to his résumé anytime soon, it’s going to come in Washington where Norton is currently the linebackers coach for the Commanders.
If the Chiefs win on Sunday, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and 27 other players will join Norton on the list of people who have pulled off a three-peat.
One player who deserves honorable mention in the three-peat department is Russ Hochstein. The former NFL offensive lineman played for the Buccaneers in 2002, but got cut in October, just three months before Tampa Bay would go on to win the Super Bowl. He then ended up with the Patriots and won a ring in both 2003 and 2004, so he played for three Super Bowl-winning teams in a row, but he wasn’t around for the Bucs’ win over the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, so he only got two rings in that span.
In the history of the NFL, only one player has achieved the remarkable feat of winning three consecutive Super Bowls. That player is none other than Charles Haley, who accomplished this incredible feat with the San Francisco 49ers in the late 1980s and early 1990s.Now, the Kansas City Chiefs are aiming to match this legendary achievement as they head into the upcoming season with their sights set on a third consecutive Super Bowl victory. Led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes and a talented roster, the Chiefs have the potential to etch their names in the history books alongside Charles Haley.
With the new season on the horizon, all eyes will be on the Chiefs as they strive to make history and solidify their place among the greatest teams in NFL history. Will they be able to pull off the elusive Super Bowl three-peat and join the ranks of legends like Charles Haley? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the Chiefs are determined to leave their mark on the NFL record books.

NFL refs favoring Chiefs is ‘ridiculous theory,’ Roger Goodell says
NEW ORLEANS – NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said at his annual Super Bowl-week news conference Monday that those who believe the Kansas City Chiefs receive preferential treatment from the officials are simply wrong.
“A lot of those theories happen in social media and they have a new life … I understand it, I think it reflects a lot of the fans’ passion,” Goodell said. “I think it’s also a reminder of how important officiating is.”
Goodell said he believes the individuals who call NFL games have the highest possible standards when it comes to integrity.
“That’s a ridiculous theory, for anyone who might take it seriously,” Goodell said. “But at the end of the day, it’s something we have to continue to work on: How do we make our officiating better at all times?”
The online hoopla reminded Goodell of last year’s narrative that the commissioner and others scripted the season from the league’s Park Avenue offices in Manhattan, New York.
NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.
“These officials are outstanding people – both men and women – and they go through a lot to become officials,” Goodell said. “It’s a tough job, a really hard job. … I’ve never seen a more dedicated group of people than NFL officials to getting it right, to doing the best job they possibly can, and I’m incredibly proud of them.”
Moderated by Curt Menefee, the FOX Sports host who offered a few table-setting talking points for Goodell, the session lasted about 45 minutes. Menefee asked about the existence of a universal sky judge and how the league can be more transparent.
“I think that’s something we continue to work on: communicate better, educate better,” Goodell said. “But also to use technology. … We want to use technology to supplement and support and assist the officials in getting it right.”
More plays may be available to “replay assist” – a quick decision from an official not on the field with access to more camera angles – after the league’s competition committee meets this offseason.
Whether or not that includes using tech to spot the football rather than the eyesight of human beings is a work in progress, Goodell said.
The league tested that technology in the preseason and Goodell said it is complicated by the shape of the football makes it more difficult. The NFL’s partners are working to advance that as quickly as possible, Goodell added, and the league is experimenting to determine whether it can be used in the flow of a game.
In a recent press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell dismissed the idea that referees are favoring the Kansas City Chiefs in games. Goodell called the theory “ridiculous” and stated that the league takes the integrity of the game very seriously.Despite some controversial calls in recent Chiefs games, Goodell reiterated that the officials are trained to make fair and unbiased decisions on the field. He also emphasized that the league has strict protocols in place to ensure that all teams are treated equally.
While some fans and analysts have speculated about potential favoritism towards the Chiefs, Goodell’s comments suggest that the NFL is committed to maintaining a level playing field for all teams. It remains to be seen whether this will put an end to the speculation or if the controversy will continue to swirl around the Chiefs and their relationship with the referees.

Rob Gronkowski takes NFL officials to task over alleged Chiefs favoritism
Surely, referees in the National Football League don’t actually favor the Kansas City Chiefs, do they?
Well, Rob Gronkowski has the mind of the NFL fan and thinks that something is up.

The Chiefs are in their third consecutive Super Bowl, and it’s fair to say they got some benefit from the officiating in the AFC title game against the Buffalo Bills.

A pivotal 4th-and-1 rush by Bills quarterback Josh Allen was ruled short (it could be argued the Bills crossed the marker on third down). The Chiefs responded by scoring a touchdown on the next drive. And while the Bills did tie it up, the field was clearly tilted afterward.
This version of the Chiefs is being talked about like Gronk’s New England Patriots used to be talked about: favoritism from the refs but still difficult to beat. Gronk joked in a recent interview with Fox News Digital that even his quarterback Tom Brady got the favor of the whistle.
“It was Tom, but he deserved it at the time. He was an 18-year vet, and he took his punishment as a young buck during his first eight years in the league. Oh my lord, he used to get lit up. It was understandable he got calls,” Gronk said.
And perhaps the Chiefs have gotten that same benefit, Gronkowski added, saying the refs are “definitely … more lenient” toward the Chiefs.

“It’s been shown throughout the regular season and extending into the playoffs,” Gronk quipped.
He later added, “I just feel like there’s something, like, maybe give them an extra call or two. Don’t make it too obvious, but make it a little obvious.”

SUPER BOWL CHAMPION HOPES FANS APPRECIATE CHIEFS’ GREATNESS, NOT HATE ON IT
Gronkowski will get to see firsthand how much the refs actually favor the Chiefs, if at all, as he’ll be in New Orleans on behalf of Bounty to clean up the mess that comes with dirty eating during Super Bowl Sunday.
“You can’t have football without wings, there’s no doubt about that. But you can’t have wings without Bounty,” Gronk said ahead of his trip to Bourbon Street, where there will be food aplenty.
His wingman, Saints legend Drew Brees, will try to show him the best wings in town, but he doesn’t think anything will beat his hometown Buffalo wings, similar to the Chiefs.
Gronkowski added that even though the Chiefs may have some help from the zebras, it’s “no excuse” for the Bills or anyone to fall short when they have their chances.

“You have opportunities to beat them, you got to overcome all situations, and the Buffalo Bills need to make championship plays in championship moments, and they didn’t come through. You got to make plays in order to beat the Chiefs, and you can’t blame it on the refs,” Gronk continued.
“It doesn’t matter, you still got to beat the Chiefs, and you still got to come through with big plays at the end of the game in order to beat them, and no team has done that yet.”

Rob Gronkowski, former NFL tight end and current analyst, is not holding back when it comes to his thoughts on the officiating in the NFL. In a recent interview, Gronkowski took aim at the league’s officials, accusing them of showing favoritism towards the Kansas City Chiefs.Gronkowski pointed to several instances during the Chiefs’ recent games where he felt the officiating was biased in their favor. He cited missed calls, questionable penalties, and overall inconsistency in the way the game was being officiated.
“It’s clear to me that the officials have a bias towards the Chiefs,” Gronkowski said. “I’ve seen too many calls go their way, too many missed calls against them. It’s not fair to the other teams in the league who are playing by the rules and not getting the same treatment.”
Gronkowski’s comments have sparked a debate among fans and analysts alike, with some agreeing with his assessment and others dismissing it as sour grapes. Regardless, it’s clear that Gronkowski is not afraid to speak his mind when it comes to the integrity of the game.
As the NFL continues to address concerns about officiating and fairness, Gronkowski’s comments serve as a reminder that even former players are paying close attention to how the game is being officiated. Only time will tell if the league takes any action in response to Gronkowski’s accusations.

Roger Goodell Calls Out ‘Ridiculous Theory’ About NFL Refs Favoring Chiefs | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Chris Graythen/Getty Images
As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for their third straight Super Bowl appearance on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, they’re still facing detractors who believe they reached this point because they get favorable calls from officials.
“It reminds me of the script, that I write a script for the entire season… It’s a ridiculous theory, for anyone who might take it seriously,” Goodell said.
Goodell added that the league is constantly exploring ways to improve its officiating and may add ways to review plays, such as facemask penalties, going forward.
“I’m proud of what they do, but that doesn’t mean we’re not trying to get better,” Goodell told reporters.
When asked if there would be a penalty for players like Kansas City star quarterback Patrick Mahomes flopping to draw penalties, Goodell said he doesn’t view that as a significant issue, but he wouldn’t be surprised if the competition committee discussed it in the future.
The Chiefs’ 15-2 finish to the 2024 season wasn’t without its hardships. Many wins came down to the last minute, as Kansas City was fortunate to have some calls go their way. Of course, that didn’t help the perception that the back-to-back reigning Super Bowl champions were being gifted the opportunity to achieve the first three-peat in modern NFL history.
For example, in the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills, star quarterback Josh Allen was ruled short on a crucial fourth-down play despite appearing to have picked up the first down. The play swung the momentum in the Chiefs’ favor, helping them secure a 32-29 win. Unsurprisingly, the controversial play was one of the biggest talking points after the game.
Fans will certainly be paying close attention to Sunday’s Big Game, as the Eagles will be the last to try their hands at knocking the Chiefs from their perch. Any questionable plays that work in Kansas City’s favor will certainly be under a microscope following the Super Bowl.
In a recent press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the growing speculation that NFL referees are favoring the Kansas City Chiefs in their games. Goodell called the theory “ridiculous” and stated that the league takes the integrity of the game very seriously.Goodell went on to explain that all NFL referees are held to the highest standards and are trained to make unbiased and fair calls during games. He emphasized that any accusations of favoritism towards a particular team are not only unfounded but also damaging to the reputation of the league.
The controversy surrounding the alleged favoritism towards the Chiefs has been fueled by several close calls and controversial decisions in their recent games. However, Goodell stressed that these incidents are simply part of the game and should not be taken as evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of the officials.
As the Chiefs continue their quest for another Super Bowl title, it is clear that the spotlight will remain on both the team and the referees. But according to Goodell, fans can rest assured that the NFL is committed to ensuring that every game is officiated fairly and without bias.

Roger Goodell: Officials favoring Chiefs a “ridiculous theory”
Officiating is often a topic at NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s Super Bowl press conferences and it was no different in New Orleans on Monday.
An early question for Goodell concerned the feelings of some fans that officials favor the Chiefs at the expense of other teams. Goodell said he understood how fans could feel that way because of their passion for the game, but called it a “ridiculous theory.”
“A lot of those theories are things that happen on social media and they get a new life,” Goodell said.
Goodell added that such discussed shows how important officiating is and called the league’s officials an “outstanding” group of men and women dedicated to the game. He said the focus on the work they do is why the league has to constantly strive to make that part of the game better from year to year.
As for the Chiefs specifically, Goodell noted that 11 of their regular season wins came by one score and said it spoke to the competitiveness of the league rather than a bias toward any team.
In a recent press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell dismissed the notion that officials are favoring the Kansas City Chiefs in games, calling it a “ridiculous theory.”Goodell addressed the issue after several controversial calls in Chiefs games sparked speculation that referees were showing bias towards the reigning Super Bowl champions. Fans and analysts alike have pointed to instances where questionable penalties or non-calls seemed to benefit the Chiefs.
However, Goodell vehemently denied any favoritism towards the Chiefs, stating that the league holds its officials to the highest standards of integrity and impartiality. He emphasized that the NFL is committed to fair and equitable officiating in all games.
While some may continue to believe in conspiracy theories about officiating, Goodell made it clear that he stands by the integrity of the league and its officials. Only time will tell if this controversy will continue to swirl around the Chiefs or if it will fade away as the season progresses.

Ravens’ Marlon Humphrey Trolls Bills with Cancun Jab After Loss to Chiefs in AFCCG | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Michael Owens/Getty Images
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey kept the receipts.
After the Buffalo Bills defeated his Ravens in the AFC Divisional Round, one of the victorious players apparently took a shot at Baltimore having nine Pro Bowlers and still falling short:
Albert Breer @AlbertBreer
One thing was clear—the <a href=”https://twitter.com/BuffaloBills?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>@BuffaloBills</a> felt disrespected. Right or wrong, it was a rallying cry, and Josh Allen brought up at halftime the narrative that the Bills weren’t big or strong enough.<br><br>On the way out, I heard a guy say, “Now those 9 Pro Bowlers can go to the Pro Bowl.” <a href=”https://t.co/M13oe8TBS8″>https://t.co/M13oe8TBS8</a>
Well, Buffalo’s season came to an end Sunday with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. Humphrey seized the opportunity to bring things full circle when he took to social media and said, “after the pro bowl maybe we can all go enjoy Cancun.”
There’s a certain level of irony with Humphrey poking fun at the Bills after their loss.
After all, it was just a handful of days ago that he took to social media and urged Buffalo to defeat the Chiefs and prevent Patrick Mahomes and Co. from making history as the first team in the NFL to win three straight Super Bowls:
Humphrey and NFL fans who are tired of the Chiefs winning now have to put their hopes on the Philadelphia Eagles.
It will be a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, which Kansas City won 38-35. However, Philadelphia didn’t have Saquon Barkley on its side for that one, which could be the difference this time around.
But defeating a Chiefs team that feels inevitable is easier said than done.
Buffalo certainly knows that considering it has lost to Mahomes’ side in four of the last five postseasons. Two of those losses came in the AFC Championship Game, with Sunday coming in particularly painful fashion since it had a fourth-quarter lead.
Humphrey knows what it’s like to lose to the Chiefs at this stage since Kansas City defeated the Ravens in last season’s AFC Championship Game.
Ultimately, there is nobody in the NFL better at sending opponents to Cancun than Mahomes.
In a tweet that has since been deleted, Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey took a shot at the Buffalo Bills following their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.Humphrey tweeted, “Looks like Buffalo is headed to Cancun early this year,” referencing the Bills’ early exit from the playoffs. The tweet quickly went viral, with many fans and media outlets reacting to Humphrey’s jab.
While some found the tweet amusing, others criticized Humphrey for being unsportsmanlike. Regardless, the Ravens’ cornerback didn’t seem to mind the backlash, as he later tweeted, “I’m just here for the laughs.”
The Bills have yet to respond to Humphrey’s tweet, but it’s safe to say that this won’t be the last we hear of this social media feud. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills made a statement by defeating Lamar Jackson‘s Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round of the 2025 NFL playoffs. But once again, they failed to get past Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Only three points separated Allen and company from Super Bowl LIX, though some feel that the result would’ve been different had the referees granted a critical first down to the Bills early in the fourth quarter.
One of Jackson’s best teammates, for instance, went as far as suggesting that Buffalo was ‘robbed’ on that play. We’re talking about Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey, who shared his thoughts on social media.
“They lowkey did rob the Bills from the 4th down conversion. Josh definitely crossed the line,” Humphrey wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), in reference to a quarterback sneak by Allen that turned the ball over to the Chiefs on downs.

The call that affected Allen, Bills against the Chiefs
The play in question took place with 13:01 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Bills, leading 22-21 in the game, faced a fourth-and-one situation at Kansas City’s 41-yard line. Sean McDermott decided to keep the offensive unit on the field to try and get the first down with Allen’s legs.

As the Chiefs defense stopped Allen near the line of scrimmage, the refs considered that the Bills quarterback fell short of yards. After watching a replay, even though the images still looked unclear, the NFL officiating crew stood by its original decision.
It’s safe to say it may have been a game-changing moment, as Mahomes went on to score a rushing touchdown in the following drive, putting the Chiefs in front by 29-22 after a successful two-point conversion pass.
Allen orchestrated a nine-play, 70-yard touchdown drive in the Bills’ next possession to tie the score, but Kansas City responded with the field goal that ended up making the difference at Arrowhead.
McDermott believes Allen got the first down in Kansas City
Speaking to reporters after his team’s loss, McDermott let everyone know that, even though he wasn’t sure about which angles were used in the replay, he thought that Allen got the first down.

“I thought he had it. Just short of the line was actually the first down, what it looked like to me when it was sitting next to me with the marker, just inside that white stripe was the first down and it looked like he got to it. That’s all I can say,” McDermott stated.
For many, this call will go down as a big “what if” in the Bills’ season. Either way, it would be unfair to take credit away from the Chiefs. At the end of the day, Mahomes is still unbeaten against Allen in four playoff games. And now he’s chasing a third consecutive Super Bowl win.
In a recent interview, star Baltimore Ravens teammate of Lamar Jackson, Marlon Humphrey, expressed his belief that the Buffalo Bills were “robbed” in their AFC Championship game against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Humphrey, who is known for his outspoken nature, did not hold back in his assessment of the controversial calls made during the game. Many fans and analysts have pointed to a crucial pass interference call that was not called on a crucial fourth down play late in the game as a key moment that could have changed the outcome. Humphrey echoed these sentiments, stating that he believes the Bills were unfairly disadvantaged by the officiating.
Despite the controversy surrounding the game, the Chiefs emerged victorious and advanced to the Super Bowl, where they will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bills, on the other hand, will have to regroup and look towards next season.
As the NFL offseason approaches, it will be interesting to see how the league addresses issues of officiating and fairness in games. In the meantime, fans can expect more drama and excitement as the Super Bowl approaches.

Marlon Humphrey has as much Chiefs fatigue as anybody
If the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl next weekend, they’ll become the first team to win three straight. The Chiefs are favored, so if the experts are right, K.C. will win their fourth championship in six years.
A dynasty like this, and its repetitive nature, creates an “anybody but them” mentality, and Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey definitely has that right now.
Humphrey posted the following on social media before the AFC title game last weekend:
I have no reason of saying this other than being a hater. The Bills or whatever NFC team gotta beat the Chiefs. We can’t let them keep getting away with this

As you know, the Chiefs won, and their victory was at least partially due to some controversial calls that went their way. The general sentiment among football fans is that the Chiefs always seem to have questionable calls go their way.
Humphrey, no stranger to controversy himself, is in this camp, given what he posted a few days ago:
They lowkey did rob the Bills from the 4th down conversion. Josh definitely crossed the line
— marlonhumphrey.eth (@marlon_humphrey) January 27, 2025
Humphrey, who has no problem expressing his strong opinions and dealing with any backlash that may ensue, is in the “Bills got shafted” camp.
Many people feel this way, and it only adds to the Chiefs’ backlash/fatigue.
You also have the extreme ubiquity of Taylor Swift and the Kelce brothers. If you consume sports and/or entertainment news in any substantial capacity, then you have had more Swift-Kelce relationship coverage than you could ever want or need.
If you watch NFL football, you’ve undoubtedly noticed how Jason Kelce appears in every third or fourth commercial during game broadcasts.
Deion Sanders is the equivalent of college football broadcasts.
And while Swift is a very likable public figure, she’s also somewhat inescapable right now, which can be off-putting.
A decade ago, the Super Bowl halftime show act was Katy Perry, a former nemesis of Swift’s and a pop star who at that time was just as ubiquitous as Swift is now.
Oversaturation of anyone or anything creates fatigue and/or indifference. If the overkill continues on, then we get outright backlash. Many of us also got fatigued of the New England Patriots dynasty, but at least they seemed more interesting than the Chiefs.
Controversies often surrounded the Patriots’ championship runs, which made them slightly more compelling than the current dynasty.
Marlon Humphrey has as much Chiefs fatigue as anybodyBaltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey is no stranger to facing the Kansas City Chiefs. In fact, the two teams have developed quite the rivalry over the past few seasons, with their matchups always proving to be highly anticipated and fiercely competitive.
But after facing off against the Chiefs multiple times in recent years, Humphrey has admitted that he’s feeling a bit of fatigue when it comes to playing against Kansas City. In a recent interview, Humphrey said, “I think everybody has a little bit of Chiefs fatigue. They’ve been at the top of the league for so long now, and it’s always a tough matchup when we face them.”
Humphrey’s sentiments are likely shared by many other players in the league who have had to go up against the high-powered Chiefs offense led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs have been a dominant force in the NFL in recent years, making multiple trips to the playoffs and even winning a Super Bowl in 2020.
Despite the fatigue, Humphrey and the Ravens know that they’ll have to bring their A-game every time they face the Chiefs if they want to come out on top. And with both teams expected to be contenders in the AFC once again this season, fans can expect more thrilling matchups between these two teams in the future.

Here are 59 things to know for the NFL’s 59th Super Bowl:

Chiefs vs. Eagles overview
USATSI
11. Kansas City is making its third straight Super Bowl appearance, becoming the first NFL team of the modern era to have a chance at a “three-peat,” having won its last two championship bids.
12. This is also the Chiefs’ fifth Super Bowl appearance of the last six years. They’ve advanced to — or past — seven straight AFC championships, coming within one game of matching the all-time record set by the New England Patriots from 2011-2018.
13. Super Bowl LIX is a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, when the Chiefs played the Eagles to close the 2022 season in Glendale, Arizona.
14. The Chiefs won that last Super Bowl meeting, 38-35, overcoming a 10-point halftime deficit to beat the Eagles on a last-minute field goal by Harrison Butker.
15. Kansas City’s 2022 title win included a polarizing fourth-quarter penalty on the Eagles, when cornerback James Bradberry was called for pass interference against Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, enabling the Chiefs to exhaust most of the remaining clock before Butker’s field goal.
16. The Eagles got a historic effort from quarterback Jalen Hurts in that Super Bowl. Then in just his third NFL season, Hurts totaled four touchdowns, including a Super Bowl-record three rushing scores, plus a successful two-point conversion that knotted the game at 35-35 in the closing minutes.
17. The Chiefs entered this postseason as the AFC’s No. 1 seed, finishing with an NFL-best 15-2 record and enjoying a first-round bye in the playoffs.
18. The Eagles claimed the NFC’s No. 2 seed with a 14-3 record, then won three straight home playoff games to reach the Super Bowl.
19. The two teams share history at the head coaching position: Chiefs coach Andy Reid spent 14 seasons running the Eagles from 1999-2012. Current Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, meanwhile, began his NFL career as a Chiefs assistant, working for Kansas City from 2009-2012.
20. Both teams have been prolific in terms of championship contention. Since 2004, only the Patriots have more combined playoff wins than the Chiefs (18) and Eagles (14).
21. The Chiefs are the NFL’s gold standard with perennial Super Bowl contention, but the Eagles are also making their third Super Bowl appearance of the last eight seasons.
Super Bowl history
USATSI
22. The Chiefs’ last Super Bowl win came at the end of the 2023 season, when they edged the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22, in Super Bowl LVIII, in the Las Vegas area.
23. Prior to the Chiefs’ back-to-back titles over the 49ers and Eagles from 2022-2023, Kansas City also appeared in Super Bowl LIV (2019 season) and Super Bowl LV (2020), vying for consecutive trophies.
24. The Chiefs won that first appearance, also against the 49ers, to cap quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ second full season as the starter. Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP that year, becoming one of the youngest signal-callers in NFL history to claim a Lombardi Trophy, at age 24.
25. The Chiefs lost their Super Bowl LV appearance to close the 2020 season, however, falling 31-9 to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Mahomes threw two interceptions under heavy pressure from Todd Bowles’ defense in that defeat, which marked Brady’s record seventh and final title.
26. Prior to their championship bout with the Chiefs in 2022, the Eagles also reached Super Bowl LII in 2017, famously upsetting Brady and the Patriots to claim their first-ever Lombardi Trophy. Those Eagles were led by backup quarterback Nick Foles, who won Super Bowl MVP as an injury replacement.
27. Super Bowl LIX marks the Chiefs’ seventh all-time Super Bowl appearance; they also lost Super Bowl I (1966 season) and won Super Bowl IV (1969). It also marks the Eagles’ fifth all-time appearance; they previously lost Super Bowl XV (1980) and Super Bowl XXXIX (2004).

28. Mahomes hasn’t ranked among the NFL’s most dynamic passers in recent seasons, but he thrives in crunch time, leading the Chiefs to a record 17 straight one-score victories. His backyard-style mobility has especially come in handy during tight games.
29. Rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy is arguably the team’s top big-play weapon thanks to his straight-line speed. He led all Chiefs receivers with six touchdown catches during the regular season.
30. Tight end Travis Kelce, who’s finishing his 12th season, remains Mahomes’ favorite target in the passing game. He logged a career-low 8.5 yards per catch this year but led the team with 97 receptions.
31. Defensive tackle Chris Jones remains one of the game’s premier interior defenders, leading the Chiefs’ fourth-ranked scoring defense with 61 quarterback pressures. The six-time All-Pro has also racked up nine tackles for loss, serving as the anchor to coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s unit.
32. Linebacker Nick Bolton is the missile at the heart of Spagnuolo’s defense, excelling not only as a run defender with a team-high 106 tackles but as a blitz artist, pressuring quarterbacks on 15% of his pass-rushing snaps. He’s also deflected six passes and logged 11 tackles in the backfield.
33. Cornerback Trent McDuffie is the top cover man in Kansas City, leading the team with 13 pass breakups. Pro Football Focus graded him as the third-best cornerback in the NFL this year.
34. Butker has been shakier since undergoing knee surgery in November, but he’s been money in the playoffs over the course of his career, converting 90% of postseason field goals.
Eagles stars to watch
USATSI
35. Hurts has endured clunky stretches as a thrower even in more of a run-first offense, but he’s been a master at situational ball control, totaling just one turnover in his seven playoff games since 2022. He’s also undeniable as a short-yardage runner, with 64 career scores, including playoffs.
36. Running back Saquon Barkley has enjoyed one of the best seasons in NFL history, which also happens to be his first in Philadelphia. A prized free agent signing from the rival New York Giants last offseason, he eclipsed 2,000 rushing yards in the regular season and remains an MVP candidate. Including the playoffs, he’s already logged 21 different carries of at least 20 yards.
37. Wide receiver A.J. Brown is the Eagles’ top downfield threat, averaging 16 yards per catch in tandem with DeVonta Smith on the perimeter. He’s hit 1,000 yards receiving in five of seven NFL seasons.
38. Offensive tackles Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson help make up one of, if not the most formidable front in the NFL. Both big men excel at moving in space, helping pave the way for an explosive ground game, while leaning on the interior push of peers like Cam Jurgens and Landon Dickerson.
39. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter, who’s in just his second NFL season, has emerged as one of the league’s most disruptive talents. Endlessly physical, he led the Eagles with 12 tackles for loss.
40. Linebacker Zack Baun went from offseason flyer to All-Pro stalwart under the direction of coordinator Vic Fangio. He’s been around the ball on basically every Eagles takeaway, with five forced fumbles.
41. Rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean have helped steady a once-porous Eagles secondary, pairing with veteran corner Darius Slay and ball-hawking safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to give Philadelphia the NFL’s top-ranked pass defense during the regular season.
Key questions
Getty Images
42. Will the Chiefs go heavy on the blitz? Hurts hasn’t always fared well when flushed out of the pocket, and suffered an ugly 2023 playoff loss in the face of strong pressure. Spagnuolo, meanwhile, has built a sturdy reputation when it comes to sending extra rushers at precisely the right time.
43. Can Barkley run free (again)? All year, teams have tried and failed to contain the Eagles’ new running back. And while the Chiefs boast a top-10 run defense, they’ll also have to account for an elite group of pass weapons on the Eagles’ end, including tackle-shedding tight end Dallas Goedert.
44. Will the Chiefs keep Mahomes upright? Kansas City also boasts a battle-tested front, with Pro Bowlers like Joe Thuney and Creed Humphrey holding things down. Carter has been a warrior in the middle, though, and the young Nolan Smith Jr. has also emerged off the edge for the Eagles.
45. Can the Eagles match the Chiefs’ situational strategy? Reid’s creative play design does a lot to elevate an otherwise so-so crop of talent around Mahomes, whereas Sirianni and Kellen Moore’s Eagles offense has been fairly predictable, leaning mostly on the sheer star power of the players in the lineup.
Injuries to monitor
46. The Chiefs have endured the absence of a slew of wideouts, including 2023 standout Rashee Rice, but are otherwise healthy at the skill spots.
47. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor, who sat out Week 18 with a knee injury, is still recovering from that ailment going into the Chiefs’ final week of practice before the big game.
48. The Eagles are battling several bruises in the trenches, with both Dickerson (knee) and Jurgens (back) missing early practices after fighting through pain in the NFC Championship.
49. DeVonta Smith is also nursing a hamstring injury for the Eagles, but is expected to play.
Super Bowl odds
50. The Chiefs opened as 2-point favorites, per SportsLine consensus odds. They are currently 1.5-point favorites over the Eagles, according to the oddsmakers.
51. The opening Over-Under point total for Super Bowl LIX was 49.5, per SportsLine.
52. Mahomes is the betting favorite to win Super Bowl MVP, which would be his fourth such honor. Barkley is next in line on oddsmakers’ list of favorites for the game’s top individual award.
Miscellaneous notes
USATSI
53. The Eagles are the designated “home” team for the game; this designation rotates between the AFC and NFC each year. As a result, they got first choice of their uniform for the game, and elected to wear their signature Midnight Green jerseys, which they also wore against the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.
54. With the Eagles wearing green, the Chiefs will wear their white away jerseys. Teams wearing white jerseys in the Super Bowl are 16-4 in the last 20 title games. The only two teams to win wearing home colors over the last decade are … the Chiefs and the Eagles.
55. Ron Torbert will serve as the game’s referee. He previously refereed Super Bowl LVI (2021).
56. Grammy-winning singer Jon Batiste will perform the pregame national anthem, while Ledisi will sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
57. Lauren Daigle and Trombone Shorty will perform “America the Beautiful.”
58. Grammy-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar will headline the halftime show.
