  • Wind chills could reach -27 in NE Ohio, National Weather Service warns

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The weather conditions expected today and Wednesday in Northeast Ohio are at a dangerous level, according to the National Weather Service.

High temperatures today will be around 10 degrees in the Cleveland area and wind chills could make it feel as cold as 14 below zero. Overnight lows will approach minus-10 and the wind will make it feel as cold as minus-24 in Cleveland and minus-27 in other areas, forecasters say.

Although Wednesday’s high could reach 14 degrees, stronger winds will make it feel as cold as minus-24.

It’s resulted in the NWS issuing a cold weather advisory for most of northern Ohio, including Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Trumbull counties. The advisory is expected to remain in effect until 7 p.m. today.

An extreme cold warning begins at 7 p.m. today and continues until 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The Weather Service warns that wind chills around 25 below zero can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Concern about exposure has led to dozens of school districts in Northeast Ohio canceling classes for both today and Wednesday.

Cleveland City Hall is closed today, but there will be warming centers open throughout the city: Michael Zone Recreation Center (West Side), 6301 Lorain Ave.; Lonnie Burten Recreation Center, 2511 East 46th St.; Zelma George Recreation Center, 3155 Martin Luther King Blvd.; Collinwood Recreation Center, 16300 Lakeshore Blvd.

Cuyahoga County offices will be open today, according to a news release. No decision has been made on Wednesday.

In Akron, the Summit Lake Community Center, 380 W. Crosier St., will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Wednesday to offer shelter from the cold, the city announced.

Forecasters advise residents to dress in layers if going outside, including a hat, face mask, and gloves. Wrapping or draining pipes, or allowing water to drip slowly can prevent ruptured pipes. Residents also are advised to keep pets indoors.

The Weather Service also urges caution using portable heaters and says grills or generators should not be used indoors.

As the winter weather continues to grip Northeast Ohio, the National Weather Service is warning residents to prepare for dangerously cold wind chills that could reach as low as -27 degrees.

The bitter cold temperatures are expected to move into the region over the next few days, with wind chills dropping to dangerous levels on Wednesday and Thursday. This extreme cold can pose a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia for those who are not properly dressed or exposed to the elements for an extended period of time.

It is important for residents to take precautions to stay safe during this frigid weather. This includes dressing in layers, covering exposed skin, and limiting time outdoors. It is also important to check on elderly neighbors and family members who may be more vulnerable to the cold.

If you must venture outside, make sure to wear hats, gloves, scarves, and insulated clothing to protect yourself from the harsh wind chills. It is also recommended to keep emergency supplies, such as blankets, water, and non-perishable food, in your car in case you become stranded.

Stay informed by monitoring local weather forecasts and advisories, and take the necessary steps to stay safe during this extreme cold snap. Let’s all work together to stay warm and safe during this winter weather event.

  • Tough wind chills by dawn Tuesday in CNY, very heavy lake snow for the North Country next

As we have been telling you for nearly a week, the coldest wind chills of this winter season will arrive by Monday night through dawn Tuesday across all of Central New York!

We still believe that wind chills should drop to generally as low as -5 to -15 degrees (below zero) by sunrise Tuesday. However, some spots may approach -20 degrees.

These low wind chills can create frostbite in less than 1 hour!

Important frostbite reminders (on exposed skin) so you can make empowered decisions about being outside:
–You can get frostbite in 30 minutes when the wind chill is -20 degrees (below zero).
–You can get frostbite in 20 minutes when the wind chill is -30 degrees (below zero).
–You can get frostbite in 10 minutes when the wind chill is -40 degrees (below zero).

UPDATE: Cold Weather Advisories have now been issued for most of CNY, this includes the city of Syracuse. This Weather Alert runs from midnight Monday night through noon on Wednesday. The wind will increase late this afternoon and tonight, the temperature will be falling. The combination will make the reel feel much colder than the actual temperatures which drop to near 0 to 10 above overnight. Remember there was a change for this winter and a cold weather advisory replaces what was in previous winter a “wind chill advisory”. Regardless, the meaning is the same.

When cold weather advisories are issued, here is what you should do:
–If you must be outdoors, use common sense and dress warmly.
–Make sure that all exposed skin is covered. If possible, avoid prolonged exposure to the cold to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
    –Do not leave pets outside

During the coldest air of the season, it appears that very impactful and in places heavy lake effect snow will stream across portions of Jefferson, Lewis, and far northern Oswego Counties from Monday evening through Wednesday midday. East and northeast of Lake Ontario, over the northern Tug Hill, will see the heaviest snowfall rates!

Before it heads into the North Country, portions of the lakeshore communities between Rochester and Oswego will likely see the most snow through Monday late afternoon. Some of this lake-effect snow will also swipe through parts of the North Finger Lakes region and the immediate CNY area. As it will only be over the Syracuse area for a few hours and mostly be lighter, at most we see 2″ in the city. Higher totals will take place to the west and northwest of Onondaga County.

When you have lake effect snow at the same time you have very cold temperatures, the salt brine mixture will not be as effective in melting snow. This will create icy and worse driving conditions in these counties.

With all of this in mind, I will first show you the snowfall forecast graphic by Monday early evening below.

Forecast snow between late Sunday night & 7:00 PM Monday:

My next forecast snowfall graphic is for new snow between Monday evening and 7 AM Wednesday.

Expect extremely rough to possibly impossible driving conditions over parts of southeastern Jefferson and northwestern Lewis counties during this part of the lake effect snow event. Feet of snow are expected in a narrow corridor!

New snow between 7:00 PM Monday & 7 AM Wednesday:

Stay with the CNYcentral Weather Authority team for updates!

Get ready, Central New York! As we head into Tuesday morning, we can expect some tough wind chills and very heavy lake-effect snow for the North Country.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for much of the region, with wind chills expected to drop as low as -20 degrees by dawn on Tuesday. This means that frostbite and hypothermia can occur in a matter of minutes if proper precautions are not taken.

In addition to the frigid temperatures, the North Country is also bracing for very heavy lake-effect snow. Areas near Lake Ontario could see snowfall rates of 2-3 inches per hour, leading to significant accumulation and hazardous travel conditions.

So make sure to bundle up, limit your time outdoors, and stay safe on the roads. And if you’re in the North Country, be prepared for some serious snowfall. Winter is definitely making its presence known in CNY!

  • Frigid temperatures, dangerous wind chills move into Wisconsin

Frigid temperatures, dangerous wind chills move into Wisconsin

Bitter cold expected to last until Wednesday morning

YEAH. SO BRAVING THE ELEMENTS. IT IS VERY COLD OUTSIDE AND WE DO HAVE WIND CHILLS THAT ARE WELL BELOW INTO THE NEGATIVE TEENS AND -20S RIGHT NOW. AND WE DO HAVE COLD WEATHER ADVISORIES NOW. THESE REPLACE THE WIND CHILL ADVISORIES. WIND CHILL WARNINGS AND THE THRESHOLD FOR SOUTHEAST WISCONSIN FOR A WIND CHILL ADVISORY IS 20 TO 29 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. ANYTHING GREATER THAN THAT -30 OR COLDER. THAT IS WHERE WE DO SEE THAT EXTREME COLD WARNING. AND MATTER OF FACT, THE AREAS TO THE NORTH OF US AND NORTHEASTERN WISCONSIN ARE GOING TO BE SEEING SOME WIND CHILL WARNING CRITERIA. WIND CHILLS. SO IT IS JUST TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF HOW COLD IT IS WITH THAT COLD WEATHER ADVISORY. VERY COLD WEATHER CLEARLY HAS ARRIVED. YOU STEP OUTSIDE, YOU KNOW IT. YOU FEEL IT. THAT FRIGID AIR LAST YEAR THROUGH TUESDAY, POTENTIALLY A LITTLE BIT LINGERING INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING. BUT THERE IS SOME WARMER AIR THAT DOES ARRIVE ON WEDNESDAY. BY THE AFTERNOON, HIGHS GETTING INTO THE 20S. DOES SOUND LIKE A LOT, BUT TRUST ME, AFTER DEALING OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, 20 IS GOING TO FEEL A WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN WHAT WE’RE DEALING WITH RIGHT NOW. IT IS ONE DEGREE BELOW ZERO IN MILWAUKEE, EAST SIDE EDGEWATER CONDOS. THERE’S CARS MOVING ABOUT. I DID SEE FOLKS DRESSED UP APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER CONDITIONS EARLIER IN THE DAY TODAY. MAKE SURE YOU GRAB ALL THE ACCESSORIES, THE HAT, THE MITTENS, THE GLOVES, EVERYTHING THAT YOU NEED TO STAY NICE AND WARM OVERNIGHT INTO TOMORROW ESPECIALLY. MAYBE YOU GOT TO WALK THE DOG. FOUR DEGREES IN OCONOMOWOC BELOW, ZERO FOUR BELOW IN WATERTOWN, FOUR DEGREES BELOW ZERO. ALSO IN WAUKESHA, ONE BELOW IN MILWAUKEE, ZERO GOOSE EGG IN RACINE. WINDS. THEY’VE BEEN BREEZY FOR MUCH OF THE DAY TODAY, AROUND 15 TO 25MPH. SO IT’S COLD OUTSIDE. THEN YOU GOT THE WINDS AND NOW YOU’VE GOT WIND CHILLS THAT ARE RUNNING AROUND 20 DEGREES BELOW ZERO FOR MUCH OF THE AREA. BUT LOOK UP TO THE NORTH NEAR ELKHART LAKE. THAT’S THE COLDEST READING RIGHT NOW. 26 BELOW ZERO IN SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, 23 SPECIFICALLY BELOW ZERO, IF YOU LIKE, IN SHEBOYGAN. SO WITH THIS COLD WEATHER ADVISORY ALL ACROSS THE AREA, THIS GOES UNTIL NOON TUESDAY. WE’LL SEE IF IT GETS EXTENDED INTO WEDNESDAY. THERE WILL BE WIND CHILLS THAT REMAIN BELOW ZERO INTO OUR WEDNESDAY MORNING, BEFORE WE FINALLY SEE IT RISE ABOVE, BUT IT MIGHT BE JUST WARM ENOUGH THAT IT DOESN’T HIT THAT CRITERIA JUST YET. EITHER WAY, YOU’RE STILL GOING TO FEEL IT. SEVEN FOR THE HIGH TEMPERATURE TOMORROW, THREE ON TUESDAY, 20 RETURNING WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AND THEN THE WEEKEND. LOOKING A LOT BETTER. BACK ABOVE FREEZING. NOT A LOT, BUT A FEW DEGREES OR SO. GOING TO BE FEELING MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE TO BE OUTSIDE COMPARED TO WHAT’S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW. SATELLITE RADAR, PRETTY QUIET CONDITIONS. WE’VE GOT AN ARCTIC HIGH PRESSURE. THERE’S SNOWFALL ONGOING OFF TOWARDS THE EAST COAST, WHERE THEY’VE BEEN DEALING WITH SOME HEAVY SNOW. BUT HERE’S SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN OFTEN. THERE’S A WINTER STORM WARNINGS IN HOUSTON TO NEW ORLEANS. AROUND 3 TO 5IN OF SNOWFALL, POTENTIALLY FROM HOUSTON TO NEW ORLEANS. AIRPORTS IN HOUSTON ARE ALREADY SHUTTING DOWN ON TUESDAY BECAUSE OF THAT SYSTEM THAT’S GOING TO MOVE IN HERE. THEY ARE NOT PREPARED FOR WINTER WEATHER LIKE WE ARE UP HERE. THAT SHOWS HOW FAR THAT COLD IS SINKING DOWN. WHAT I CAN TELL YOU IS A LOT OF SUNSHINE AND COLD AIR AS WE HEAD INTO THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, SEVEN FOR THE HIGH TOMORROW, THREE ON TUESDAY, 25 ON WEDNESDAY, AND THEN WE’LL GRADUALLY WARM UP AS WE HEAD INTO THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. UPPER 20S TO WRAP UP THE WORKWEEK 30S. AS WE HEAD INTO THE WEEKEND, COULD HAVE A FEW CHANCE OF FLURRIES WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY, BUT AFTER TUESDAY, I THINK A L
