  • Customers slam Nestlé as ‘cruel’ for axing popular chocolate bar

Customers have slammed Nestlé as ‘cruel’ after plans to discontinue an immensely popular chocolate bar have emerged.

The chocolate behemoth confirmed today that they are axing the sweet treat due to insufficient sales.

Much to the shock of vegans, Nestlé said it will only be available ‘until the summer’ – though there is no specific date provided for when sales will stop in the UK.

Crafted with rice-based milk alternatives and made using 100 per cent sustainable cocoa, it is popular with customers looking for a dairy-free or vegan alternative.

The vegan version of the KitKat was first launched in 2021 due to customer demand and was also believed to push Nestlé further towards its Net Zero Plans for 2050.

Although it tasted similar to the original, the KitKat Vegan had an 18 per cent smaller carbon footprint.

The KitKat Vegan was available in 15 European countries including France, Denmark and the UK – where it sold for around £1.

A Nestlé spokesperson told The Mirror: ‘We know that KitKat Vegan has been popular for those looking for dairy or vegan alternatives.

‘Unfortunately, global demand has been reducing to the point that production was making manufacturing more and more complex and we have now made the difficult decision to discontinue the product.

‘We know there will be some disappointment, however it will still be available in the UK and Ireland until the summer.’

Nestlé acknowledged that vegan chocolate remains a niche market, with their more traditional products bringing in the most money.

The spokesperson added: ‘Our emphasis with the KitKat brand for the foreseeable future will be on classic chocolate variants, as they continue to be the preferred choice among consumers.’

Social media erupted with heartfelt posts as thousands voiced their disappointment, including one emotional user who took to the group Vegan Food UK to write: ‘No! You are just cruel!

‘It’s one of the only nice tasting vegan chocolate products that my daughter can eat without an allergic reaction.

‘We’ve been paying your over inflated prices for a long while and now you’re taking that little bit of pleasure away from her and so many thousands of others.’

Others agreed that they would be left with a lack of vegan alternatives to chocolate without KitKat Vegan.

‘Just heard they might be stopping production of Vegan KitKats in the UK and honestly man I’m so tired of vegan options getting more and more limited recently’, a disappointed customer said.

Another wrote:’Nah the vegan kitkat is being discontinued?!

    Why are we going backwards?

‘Can’t believe the vegan KitKat has been discontinued,’ someone else added on X/Twitter. ‘This is devastating’.

While a fifth tagged KitKat’s official account and begged: ‘Please say it’s not true’.

When it was first released, the KitKat Vegan divided chocoholics who said that it didn’t taste the same as the original due to the use of darker chocolate.

But today, as people mourned the loss of the KitKat Vegan on social media, one said: ‘What?? I liked it more than the regular KitKat.

However there is good news in the world of chocolate as Iceland announced on Tuesday it would be stocking everyone’s ‘favourite’ chocolate – Milky Way Crispy Rolls.

  • Nestlé introduces brand new KitKat shape to ‘encourage sharing’ as rare chocolate bar is axed

KitKat is set to undergo its biggest transformation in nearly 90 years, as the iconic four-finger chocolate bar makes way for a new two-column sharing design.

The legendary British chocolate brand will now offer a 99g sharing bar format with multiple break-off pieces, marking a significant departure from its traditional design that dates back to 1935.

The historic change comes almost nine decades after Rowntree’s of York first launched the four-finger bar, which was reportedly created following a worker’s suggestion to make a chocolate bar that would fit in a man’s work bag.

Nestlé, KitKat’s maker, says the new design aims to make it “easier to create moments of connection” between people sharing the chocolate bar.

The new sharing bars will be available in three flavours: double chocolate, salted caramel and hazelnut.

A Nestlé spokesperson highlighted the unique eating experience of the new format, saying: “These innovative bars provide a unique, and multi-sensory eating experience thanks to their delicious light and creamy fillings and chocolate that melts effortlessly in the mouth.”

They added that the contrast in textures creates “an exceptional experience,” enhanced by “the stunning swirled effect created by the marbled coating”.

The redesign represents a significant shift for the brand, which has maintained its signature four-finger format since its creation by Rowntree’s of York.

The new design has already generated excitement on social media, with chocolate lovers expressing enthusiasm for the range.

“Oooooh I have to sample them all!!” wrote one fan, while another commented: “These look fun to try!!!”

Another eager customer shared: “Waiting impatiently for my local to put them on the shelves. Says they are in stock.”

This shift in KitKat’s design comes as Nestlé announced the discontinuation of its vegan KitKat due to insufficient sales.

The plant-based version, launched in 2021, will only be available “until the summer” across its 15 European markets, including the UK, France and Denmark.

The vegan KitKat, which sold for around £1, was crafted with rice-based milk alternatives and 100 per cent sustainable cocoa, boasting an 18 per cent smaller carbon footprint than its traditional counterpart.

“We know that KitKat Vegan has been popular for those looking for dairy or vegan alternatives,” a Nestlé spokesman told The Mirror.

“Unfortunately, global demand has been reducing to the point that production was making manufacturing more and more complex and we have now made the difficult decision to discontinue the product.”

Nestlé has recently announced the introduction of a brand new KitKat shape in an effort to promote sharing among consumers. This move comes as the company has decided to discontinue a rare chocolate bar in their lineup.

The new KitKat shape features a unique design that is meant to make it easier for consumers to break off and share with others. This change is part of Nestlé’s ongoing efforts to encourage social interaction and connection through their products.

At the same time, Nestlé has made the decision to discontinue a rare chocolate bar that has been a fan favorite for many years. While this news may disappoint some loyal customers, the company is confident that the new KitKat shape will provide a fresh and exciting experience for all chocolate lovers.

Overall, Nestlé’s decision to introduce a new KitKat shape and retire a rare chocolate bar demonstrates their commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. Fans can look forward to trying out the new shape and sharing the delicious taste of KitKat with their friends and family.

  • Warm Up with the Richest, Creamiest Cup of Hot Chocolate – Garden & Gun

Your drinking chocolate, says Danielle Centeno, is only as good as the chocolate you use to make it. She would know—she’s been operating Escazú, a craft chocolate shop in Raleigh, North Carolina, since 2008, sourcing beans from all over Latin America but primarily from her native country of Venezuela.

Though Escazú specializes in chocolate bars and confections—the bestsellers are a sea salt bar and a milk chocolate bar accented with goat milk powder—the shop also serves hot beverages, including a drinking chocolate. “It smells like brownies,” Centeno says of the decadent drink. “It’s thick, but not quite as thick as ganache.”

The most important part of the recipe is the chocolate itself. “Use chocolate from your favorite small, bean-to-bar chocolate maker,” Centeno says. Opt for a bar made of just cacao and sugar and maybe a third ingredient, cocoa butter (the fat of the cacao bean). “This hot chocolate recipe is meant to showcase the flavor of the chocolate, not mask it,” she says. “The magic is in the chocolate—choose a bar that you know you enjoy and it will most likely make a delicious cup of hot chocolate.”

From there, you can get creative; buy a bar with a higher cacao percentage, between 75 and 85 percent, and omit the sugar from the recipe; try a single-origin chocolate to really let its distinctive flavors shine; play with the milk-to-chocolate ratio to find your preferred creaminess level. And the staff at Escazú, including Centeno’s business partner, Tiana Young, like to throw in some extras, including a pinch of cayenne powder for spicy kick, peanut butter to make it more filling, cinnamon for depth of flavor—or, even better, all three together. As Centeno says, “it’s as much instinct as science.”

There’s nothing quite like wrapping your hands around a rich, creamy cup of hot chocolate on a chilly day. And if you’re looking for the ultimate indulgence, look no further than Garden & Gun’s recipe for the richest, creamiest hot chocolate you’ve ever tasted.

Made with high-quality chocolate, whole milk, and a touch of heavy cream, this decadent hot chocolate is sure to warm you up from the inside out. And the best part? It’s easy to make at home, so you can enjoy a steaming mug of this luxurious treat whenever the mood strikes.

So why settle for a mediocre cup of hot chocolate when you can treat yourself to the very best? Whip up a batch of Garden & Gun’s recipe and savor every sip of this velvety smooth drink. Trust us, once you try it, you’ll never go back to powdered mix again.

Known affectionately as Mr. Chocolate, he’s an expert when it comes to crafting not only the most mouth watering chocolates in the world, but also wonderfully heartwarming hot chocolate. Lucky for us, he was more than happy to share some of his brilliant tips and tricks that are necessary for making a dreamy, silky cup of drinkable chocolate goodness.

It should go without saying that the quality of chocolate used can make or break the experience when it comes to making a delicious hot chocolate. Torres says you should never use cocoa powder. Instead he recommends only using high quality dark chocolate with a cacao content between 60% and 72%, preferably from one of South American origin. “Dark chocolate is the richest chocolate in cocoa content. If you were to use milk chocolate it would make a weaker hot chocolate because you add milk twice, once in the chocolate and in the liquid.”

Also, you should keep in mind that boiling is the best way to go about making your hot chocolate. To achieve a velvety consistency, bring your milk to a boil while constantly stirring and adding in your chocolate with a whisk to prevent solidifying and burning. Sure, it takes a bit more time than just heating your milk in the microwave, but Torres says it makes a world of a difference. “Boiling the hot chocolate ensures that every particle of the chocolate will be melted and creates a silky emulsion,” shares Torres.

Another trick of the trade Torres swears by is the addition of powdered milk and a teaspoon of cornstarch. “Whisk them together before adding them to your pot of hot chocolate. The milk powder ensures a silky, creamy texture, while the cornstarch adds a rich, velvety thickness without altering the flavor,” says Torres.

Once you’ve created the perfect cup, he suggests topping it with unsweetened whipped cream. “Even if I love the consistency of marshmallows, I’m against the sweetness of it,” says Torres. “To me the best choice for an indulgent topping is a scoop of soft peak unsweetened whipped cream.”

Think you’re ready to make the perfect hot chocolate? Here’s Torres’ fail-proof recipe.

    Jacques Torres’ Legendary Hot Chocolate

    Ingredients

    • 2 to 3 cups whole milk (depending on desired thickness)
    • 1/2 cup milk powder
    • 1 tsp cornstarch
    • 1 cup 60% dark chocolate, in discs or coarsely chopped
    • whipped cream (optional)

    Directions

    1. Bring milk to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
    2. Lower the heat to medium then add the chocolate, whisking vigorously until the chocolate is completely melted.
    3. Add the milk powder and cornstarch, still whisking, until everything is dissolved and the mixture is smooth and thick.
    4. To serve, divide the hot chocolate among four mugs or glasses, then garnish each with a large dollop of whipped cream.

Want to add a little something extra to your hot chocolate?

Here are a couple of different ways that Jacques likes to upgrade his classic recipe:

Vanilla: cut a fresh vanilla bean in half horizontally and then split lengthwise, or ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract. Mix vanilla into the milk prior to boiling. Peppermint: Mix peppermint candy into the milk as it boils, allowing the candy to melt. Coffee: one teaspoon freeze-dried coffee granules dissolved in one tablespoon of hot water. Add diluted coffee mixture when adding in the chocolate. Raspberries: Create juice using five raspberries muddled and strained. Mix raspberry juice into the milk prior to boiling. Wicked: Add a pinch each of ground allspice, ground cinnamon, ancho chile powder, and chipotle chile powder into the milk as it boils.

If you want an even easier out, but still want super silky and delicious hot chocolate Torres’ Hot Chocolate mixes are the answer. With flavors like Classic Hot Chocolate crafted with premium Belgian dark bittersweet chocolate, Wicked Hot Chocolate with the same rich base as the Classic version, Wicked is elevated with a blend of spices and a touch of heat, or event the famous Jacques’ Classic Hot Chocolate Bomb which is a Belgian dark chocolate shell that holds Classic Hot Chocolate mix. Simply pour your favorite hot liquid over it to reveal a festive surprise of marshmallows and sprinkles.

If you’re looking to elevate your hot chocolate game this winter, look no further. As a master chocolatier, I have spent years perfecting the art of creating the perfect cup of hot chocolate. Here are my top tips for making a decadent and delicious hot chocolate that will warm you up from the inside out:

    1. Use high-quality chocolate: The key to a rich and flavorful hot chocolate is using high-quality chocolate. Opt for a dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content for a deep and intense flavor.

    2. Heat the milk gently: To prevent the milk from scalding and ruining the flavor of the hot chocolate, heat it gently over low heat. Stir constantly to ensure that the milk heats evenly and doesn’t burn.

    3. Add a pinch of salt: A small pinch of salt can enhance the flavor of the chocolate and balance out the sweetness. Don’t skip this step!

    4. Use real vanilla extract: For a hint of warmth and depth, add a splash of real vanilla extract to your hot chocolate. This will elevate the flavor and add a touch of luxury.

    5. Whip up some fresh cream: Top your hot chocolate with a dollop of freshly whipped cream for a luxurious finishing touch. You can also sprinkle some grated chocolate or cinnamon on top for added flavor.

    6. Experiment with different flavorings: Get creative with your hot chocolate by adding in different flavorings like peppermint extract, caramel sauce, or a shot of espresso. The possibilities are endless!

By following these tips, you’ll be able to create the perfect cup of hot chocolate that will warm you up and satisfy your chocolate cravings. So go ahead, indulge in a cozy night in with a steaming mug of hot chocolate made just the way a master chocolatier would.
